Falana Reacts To EFCC's Continued Detention Of Barr. Ubani Who Almost Died

Human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), on Tuesday condemned the continued detention of a former Nigerian Bar Association chief, Mr Monday Ubani, by the EFCC without charge.

Falana, in a statement, demanded the immediate release of the former 2nd Vice-President of the NBA from the anti-graft agency’s custody, where he had been held since March 19.

The senior lawyer maintained that the detention of the ex-NBA chief and one Christopher Enai, for standing surety for a suspect who allegedly absconded, was unwarranted because the act did not constitute a criminal offence in Nigeria.

The condemnation by Falana came as the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Apo, Abuja, on Monday ordered substituted service of a contempt suit on the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu, who was accused of disobeying the court’s order directing him to either release the two men or charge them to court.

The NBA condemned Ubani’s continued detention which it claimed violated a subsisting court order.

The EFCC had said it was detaining Ubani and Enai for standing as the sureties for Dr Ngozi Olojeme, said to be “a prime suspect in the N68bn NSITF fraud.”

But Falana said, “A Nigerian who stands surety for a criminal suspect commits no offence if the latter does not turn up for his or her trial. No doubt, Mr Ubani’s decision to stand surety for a client who has vamoosed has caused him untold embarrassment. But he has not contravened any provision of the penal statute.

“Hence, the EFCC has filed a motion pursuant to Section 180 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, praying the court to direct Mr Ubani to show cause why he should not forfeit his bond.”

Falana stated that EFCC must comply with an order of court granting bail to Ubani, whom he demanded should be released immediately.

He stated, “Having not charged Mr Ubani with any criminal offence whatsoever, the EFCC must comply with the order of the FCT High Court which has admitted him to bail without any further delay.

“Having filed a motion before the FCT High Court to show cause why he should not forfeit his bond, Mr Ubani’s detention by the EFCC cannot be justified under the ACJA or the EFCC Act. The EFCC should therefore release Mr Ubani without any further delay.”

Businessman Shot Dead During Robbery In Lagos

Some unidentified gunmen have shot dead a businessman, Musibau Abudu, at his residence on Itelorun Close, Haco bus stop in the Adeniyi Jones area of Ikeja, Lagos State.

It was learnt from Abudu’s neighbours that the gunmen invaded the area around 2am last week Thursday in a bid to steal some inverter batteries and rob the residents of their valuables.

It was learnt that while the robbers were operating inside the compound, Abudu stepped out of his apartment and was reportedly shot in the head.

The deceased’s neighbour, who identified himself simply as Afeez, said Abudu was rushed to the emergency unit of the Lagoon Hospital on Adeniyi Jones Avenue, where he gave up the ghost.

Afeez said, “On Thursday, I received a call from my neighbour, Folayemi, who saw some unfamiliar people using their phones’ flash light around the canal at the back of our house, some of them were already inside our compound and while we were thinking of what to do, I suddenly heard three gunshots. I could not come outside until around 6am when we started hearing familiar voices of neighbours, who were trying to rescue Abudu.

“Immediately I came out, I saw people gathered around someone, who was lying on the floor. I thought it was one of the robbers, but when I moved closer, I discovered that it was Abudu. He was trying to speak and so people rushed him to the emergency unit of the Lagoon Hospital, where he died. It was later that we discovered that the armed robbers came to steal inverter batteries.”

When contacted, Folayemi said the noise of someone jumping into the compound woke her up, adding that she alerted her neighbours when she sensed danger.

She stated, “I heard the noise of someone jumping into the compound and that woke me up. After I woke up, I peeped through my window and I saw a man on the fence, who held a torchlight and was trying to call the others. So, I started calling my neighbours on the telephone, Afeez and the man who was shot dead, to alert them that robbers were around. Few minutes after, I heard the gunshots that killed the man.”

One of the security guards on Itelorun Close, Thomas Victor, said armed robbers were fond of entering the close through the canal, adding that the house, where Abudu was killed, had been robbed before now.

Thomas said, “When I resumed around 7am, I did my routine checks by going round the close to look out for any strange vehicle and in the process, I saw people gathered in the deceased’s compound because of the incident.

“This was not the first attempt by robbers on that compound; they even came last week to steal an AC cable. Another incident happened last year, but the thief was caught. The robbers usually take advantage of the canal behind the close to commit crime.”

When contacted, the deceased’s sister, Keji Adeluola, said Abudu’s death came as a shock to the family, adding that the remains of the father of two had been deposited in the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital’s mortuary.

Police PRO, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident to The Punch, said the command had intensified the manhunt for the hoodlums, who killed Abudu, with a view to bringing them to justice.

“A murder case was reported to the police. Efforts are being intensified to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice,” Elkana said.

Amosun To Shock APC? Meets Shettima On Senate President

More camps are strategising. Ogun State Governor, Ibukunle Amosun, and his Borno State counterpart, Kashim Shettima, engaged in a long discussion on Tuesday.

The two governors, who are among the newly elected federal lawmakers currently attending an orientation programme in Abuja, excused themselves from the venue for the discussion...

It was gathered that their long talk was connected with the issue of the Senate presidency.

Amosun had declined comments on Monday when journalists asked him to confirm or deny the reports that serving and former governors were plotting to install the 9th Senate President.

It was said that his meeting with Shettima on Tuesday might not be unconnected with the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to adopt a candidate for the position.

Their body language when they saw an aspirant to the post, Senator Ali Ndume, also fuelled the suspicion as the two governors engaged the former senate leader in a brief discussion before resuming talks.

Ndume is from the same state with Shettima. The governors returned to the venue of the programme after they had discussed for over one hour. Ndume was also seen engaging other senators-elect in discussion on Tuesday at the venue of the programme.

He held conversations with former governor Gabriel Suswan, who is also a senator- elect from Benue State; Isah Jibrin from Kogi State; and Boma Mohammed from Yobe State.

Meanwhile, Ndume has explained why senators are not moving around with him unlike his fellow contestant, Senator Ahmad Lawan, who is always seen in company with many senators-elect.

He told The Punch in an exclusive interview that his colleagues should not be seen as his followers.

He said, “I want to be the Senate President and not senators’ president. I don’t believe that I should present my colleagues to the whole world as my followers. They are actually my bosses. I am only seeking to serve them.”

The senator said many senators-elect had assured him that they would work for his victory.

Nigerian Biggest Drug Dealers In Liberia Nabbed With $12m Worth Of Heroine

Two Nigerian men have been arrested by officers of the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA), with heroine worth 12 million Liberian dollars. "Henry Cheigwu and Christian Onhuwu, supply drugs to citizens in Gbarnga," commander of the LDEA in Bong County, Alex Tweh, said.

They were arrested on Sunday. “We received a tip off that the two Nigerian nationals have been dealing drugs in Gbarnga, Bong County, for the past ten years,” he said.

Upon the search of their business center, LDEA officers found plastic bags containing the drugs.

Meghan's Estranged Father Thomas Markle Will 'NEVER' Meet His Grandchild, Royal Expert Claims

A royal commentator has claimed that Thomas Markle will never see his grandchild, in an explosive new preview for TLC documentary Meghan and Harry: A Royal Baby Story, which discusses the impending birth of the royal baby.

Duncan Larcombe, author of Prince Harry: The Inside Story, admitted the likelihood of the Duchess of Sussex's estranged father reuniting with Meghan when she welcomes her firstborn child with Prince Harry this spring, was low.

American lighting director Thomas Markle, 73, has not spoken to Meghan, 37, since he missed her wedding after he was exposed for selling paparazzi pictures, royal biographer Duncan Larcombe admitted the likelihood of them reuniting was low.

In February Thomas Markle Jr branded sister Samantha 'jealous and bitter' as he begged for the family to be reunited.

Thomas Jr, shares the same father as Meghan and Samantha Markle - who he says changed her name from Yvonne Grant - he recalled how he lived with Samantha, their father and Doria Ragland for 'three to four' years after Meghan was born.

Telling how Samantha hardly knew their half sister and didn't spend any time with her, he said: 'She was very jealous of Meghan from the very beginning and still to this very day.'

Photographers Speak On How They Know Weddings That Will Last & Won't Right On The Wedding Day

Hilarious! When couples stand up in front of their family and friends and say "I Do" they believe that's it and they will be with their new husband or wife forever.

But unfortunately that isn't always the case and many make the heartbreaking decision to end things years or even months down the line.

According to wedding photographers there are a few 'red flags' which might suggest the relationship might not go the distance.

In a popular feed on Reddit, many people who work in the industry claim to have developed a "sixth sense" in working out which couples will be filing for divorce in the years to come. Here are the things they always look out for...


What happens when things go wrong at the wedding

"I am/was a wedding photographer: I think you can kind of tell if they are going to stay together forever based on how they handle all the little (and sometimes even big) problems a wedding day can bring.
"There was one couple's story I love to tell. They are not your typical bride and groom, they had their wedding in a forest where you could also go climbing (sorry don't know what they are called) with a big wooden house and fireplace in front.

"All vegan food and a lot of friends with looots of dogs. Everything was perfect, except the special dress the bride had have made and painted didn't arrive in time for the ceremony and she was devastated.

"She was in her sweatpants and a mickey mouse tshirt at that time and her soon-to-be-husband took off his suit, put on a big white shirt, stood there in his boxershorts and just said "well, we have to go" (cause the ceremony-person had to leave an hour later) and she just laughed and went with it.

"I was in shock but other than it being strange to have hairy man-legs in my weddingphotos, taking the pictures was really fun and they were totally relaxed. I'm pretty sure they will be doing well."

"Red flag: The groom winking at both my assistant and I during the ceremony.

"He was not winking in the sense that he might have been tearing up or had something in his eye but there was a part in the ceremony where the couple sat down and he would lean his head back in his chair look past his soon to be wife and wink at me or look over his left shoulder and wink at my assistant. It was bizarre."

Now this is probably just a coincidence, but one photographer believes couples should avoid smashing cake into their new husband or wife's face.

He wrote: "Photographer here. I swear that all of the couples that have split up have smashed the cake in their SOs face.

"None of the nice cake couples have. Just my weird anecdotal experience. Maybe it’s a sign of respect for each other."

"Ex wedding photographer. Typically I saw red flags when the bride or groom is super quiet. I mean silent and just watching.

"One instance was a groom who barely said ten words to anyone during the ceremony or reception afterwards. The bride and her mother were extremely loud and excited the entire time. The bride needed everything to be “perfect”. I dropped off the photo bundle with them two weeks later and he was still quiet. She however complained about all of the pictures because the groom wasn’t “smiling enough”. She wanted a discount because I couldn’t make him look happy enough.

"They got divorced about a year later. I know because I did his engagement photos with his new fiancée about four years after his first wedding. His engagement photos showed him much happier."

Auburn Gymnast Retires After Breaking Both Legs

There will be no triumphant comeback for the Auburn gymnast who broke both of her legs during a floor routine at the NCAA Regional Semifinals. Samantha Cerio says she's retiring from the sport.

Cerio snapped both of her legs while trying to land a handspring double front on Friday -- she was stretchered off the mat with 2 air casts.

Auburn went on to advance to the Regional Final ... but Cero says Friday was "my final night as a gymnast."

Cerio issued a statement saying, "After 18 years I am hanging up my grips and leaving the chalk behind."


The Auburn senior says she learned a lot from the sport, including hard work, humility, integrity and dedication, but has ultimately decided to move on.

"It may not have ended the way I had planned, but nothing ever goes as planned."

"Thank you Auburn family for giving me a home and a chance to continue doing the sport that will always be my first love. Woman Goes Behind Fiancés Back & Taunts Him For Choice Of Engagement Ring

A woman whose boyfriend popped the question having put some thought into the choice of engagement ring then went and rinsed him online.

Not only that, but she also revealed she almost laughed in his face when he pulled out the ring, so to put a really weak positive spin on this, at least she spared him that particular humiliation...

The unnamed woman poured further salt into the wound by admitting she questioned "whether this was real life or not."

In a blistering Reddit post, she wrote: "My boyfriend finally asked me to marry him and this is really what he gives me.


"[...] he pulled it out of his pocket and it took just about everything in me to not laugh and question whether this was real life or not LMAO."

Just when you think this is one cutthroat individual, she then goes on to say: "I've had it for a few days now, and I've gotten used to it so I don't think it's so bad...but also maybe I've just come to terms with it.

"I definitely wish it was something different, but oh well...

"It was his grandmother's and the pearl is my birthstone and I think that's the only reason I've been able to tolerate it."

Man Shot Dead At A Bar Just A Month To His Wedding

It is sad time for family and friends as a man has died after being attacked by gunmen in a Bar at Aba, Abia State. Information gathered revealed that the deceased identified as Stanley Mbadi was shot dead after the hoodlums robbed him off his valuables.

Before his sad death, the victim was preparing for his wedding slated to hold next month.

Emmanuel Chisom shared the sad story online:

'UKAEGBU ROAD AND ITS INCREASING INSECURITY 
We have yet lost another promising young man who by next month, if not for this unfortunate incident, would have been getting married.

Last night at Uwakwe street, somewhere around Ukaegbu road Aba, some hoodlums barged into a bar and had everyone on the floor, robbing them of their phones, wallets, and other valuables.

Stanley unsuspectingly walked into the bar and also got his own share of being robbed on the floor too, but unfortunately, he’s didn’t end in the robbery, as he was shot twice in the head as they criminals were leaving the bar.

Kingsley Mbadi was until his death an Engineer by profession and a jolly good fellow, his fiance upon getting the information has been thrown off balance since then.

I call on all the security agencies within Ogborhill and environs to please as a matter of utmost priority, step up there game on chasing these men away from that area, as we have lost so many promising young people, both male and female in this kind of show.

May the soul of Stanley Mbadi rest in peace and may God grant the family and friends the fortitude to bear this loss.

Woman Stripped In PH Market Over Theft Accusation, Speaks

Justice is set to come the way of a woman identified as Margret Alex who was stripped unclad on Monday, 1st April 2019, at the popular Mile 3 market park in Port Harcourt for allegedly stealing.

Mrs. Alex’s stripping was videoed and published online

with the pictures trending as the Federation of International Women Lawyers, FIDA, in Rivers State, has pledged to get justice for her. The police have arrested three of the suspects involved in the crime.

Mrs Alex when contacted, said she went to mile three market that fateful day to buy some items.

According to her: “I was shocked as I was lifting things from a particular shop I remembered that my purse was not where I kept it. I immediately dropped the items and tried to re-adjust my things to locate my purse so as not to lose money in the market since mile three was notorious for pickpockets when one of the hoodlums accused me of stealing.

“He started shouting thief! thief! Before I know it people gathered me, before I know it they started beating me from every corner, asking me to bring it out, the next thing one union man later identified as John stripped me unclad and they started filming my uncladness.

“Before the other union people came and intervened in the matter, they searched my bags, asked the man who said I stole to show what I stole from him, he didn’t see anything. I was not allowed to even speak or defend myself, I was beaten to stupor and even so weak to help myself and later the union people came to tell me sorry and gave me my clothes to wear and go home just like that.”

According to TPCN, she said “since my husband saw the pictures, he is so worried; he has not eaten. He has gone to the union people to ask them why they have stripped his wife unclad and they pleaded with him to let by-gone be by-gone but my unclad pictures are still online and circulating."

APC In Panic: Ndume May Become Senate President As More APC Senators Back Him

There are strong indications that no fewer than 35 senators from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are backing former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, to clinch the seat of the President of the Senate in the 9th National Assembly.

It was gathered that the lawmakers are angry with the leadership of the party over its decision to impose the current Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan without recourse to them.

According to Daily Independent, the lawmakers, who pleaded anonymity expressed disappointment at Lawan over an alleged statement credited to him that all the APC State governors have donated their Senators to him to ensure his victory.

The Senators-elect said: “We are not happy over claims by Lawan that APC governors have donated their Senators-elect to him in order to realise his Senate Presidency. Even they have gone ahead to share the juicy committees to Senators-elect that are favourable to the imposition.”

The lawmakers said they disliked attempts to intimidate and harass some of them by using the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), adding that they have uncovered plans by the party to plant spies in the gallery of the chamber to monitor the elections.

The lawmakers rooting for Ndume are mostly drawn from the incoming senators and former governors who feel slighted by the bullying tendencies of the party National Chairman, Adam Oshiomhole.

A few of the lawmakers who spoke to Daily Independent on the sideline of their induction exercise holding at the Transcorps Hilton in Abuja asked the party to retrace its steps to avoid the pitfall of 2015 when it lost the seat of Deputy Senate Presidency to the main opposition.

This was as some lawmakers in opposition PDP like the former governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, who already perceive Lawan as a symbol of the ruling APC and a willing tool for the executive give hint that APC might be in for another shocker.

Wife Of Lecturer Who R*ped Girl To Death Arraigned In Court

The Nigerian government has arraigned the wife of the Benue State Polytechnic lecturer, Andrew Ogbuja, for her alleged involvement in the death of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje.

Miss Ogbanje lived with the Ogbuja’s before her death in October, 2018, after being allegedly r*ped by Mr Ogbuja and his son, Victor, for five years.

Mr Ogbuja’s wife, Felicia, was arraigned at a Federal High Court in Benue State for her alleged involvement in the events that preceded the death of the teenager.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) accused Mrs Ogbuja of aiding the r*pe of Miss Ogbanje during her stay at their residence.

The agency had accused Mrs Ogbuja of allowing the persistent r*pe of the late victim to continue, through her silence after the crime was brought to her notice. She was arraigned on a two-count charge for the alleged offence.

Miss Ochanya died of Vesico Virginal Fistula (VVF), an infection which resulted from years of s*xual abuses as a minor while she lived with the Ogbujas. How sad!

This is quite sad. A 200 Level student at Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, Habibu Abubakar Nakasari, has lost his two hands as some men attempted to dispossess him of his motorcycle.

Habibu, who is studying English Language, suffered the attack in the early hours of Sunday.

The undergraduate was allegedly accosted in the morning around Manna area of Sokoto South LGA, where his two hands were cut off before his attackers fled with his motorcycle.

He is currently receiving treatment at the Orthopaedic Hospital, Wamakko, Sokoto State.

According to a statement released by Aminu Abdullahi Abubakar, the Director of Press to Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Manir Muhammad Dan’Iya, who represented the governor, the government has vowed to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the attack.

Speaking at the hospital bedside of Habibu, Dan’Iya said, “The governor mandated me to come and visit you and your family to assure you that all hands are on deck to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators according to the law.

“This barbaric behaviour is unbecoming among the youths and our government will not condone such act, as this will be the last to be seen in the state, God willing,” Dan’Iya added.

The Deputy Governor further disclosed that Governor Aminu Tambuwal has directed the full settlements of all medical bills of the victim by the state government.

It may be recalled that a few weeks ago, one Abdullahi Shehu, in a similar situation was allegedly attacked by political thugs who cut off one of his arms in Sokoto metropolis. Shehu was later flown to Abuja where doctors battled in vain to attach his severed arm.

Nipsey Hussle: Someone Tried To Commit Murder During Vigil

Cops are on the hunt to figure out who tried to kill someone during last week's Nipsey Hussle vigil.

According to a new search warrant, obtained by TMZ, the day after Nipsey was murdered in front of The Marathon Clothing store, 2 people were shot during the evening vigil -- one person in the elbow and another in the lower back/buttocks.

The woman who was shot in the buttocks says she heard a "loud, rapid succession of gunshots from an unknown direction."

Cops believe the shooter or shooters were trying to kill someone, and they think it was all captured on the surveillance video from Marathon.


The affidavit reads in part, there is a "surveillance system [that] captured the events leading up to, and after the attempted murder of unknown Victim."

The LAPD asked a judge to order the seizure of the video equipment located inside the strip mall stores, including Marathon.

The legal docs say employees at all the businesses refused to turn over their equipment.

And there's this ... the affidavit says, "The Marathon store has been involved in numerous investigation where surveillance video has been deleted by staff/management, prior to police arrival."

The shots triggered a stampede and 19 people were injured.

Bricklayer Gets Life Jail For Defiling Niece

An Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court yesterday sentenced a bricklayer, Idowu Ismail Gbolahan, to life imprisonment for defiling his seven-year-old niece.

Justice Abiola Soladoye convicted Gbolahan, 30, after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Gbolahan defiled the girl when she visited her grandmother at 50, Morocco Road, Somolu, Lagos on August 11 last year.

The prosecutor, Mrs. Fehinti Ogbemudia, told the court that the defendant took the victim from her grandmother’s room where she went to drink water to his own room to defile her.


She said: “The defendant suddenly carried the victim to his room and shut the door. He removed her pants and had sex with her. The victim’s scream attracted a neighbour, Ufot Esther, who led her rescue.

“The defendant made a confessional statement and the victim was referred to the Mirabel Centre at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja,  for medical examination, to corroborate her evidence.

“The statement and report are attached to the proof of evidence, which is before the court. We rely on Section 213 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) 2015.”

In his allocutus (plea for mitigation of sentence), defence cousel Mr. Kelechi Obi said Gbolahan was a first offender, with no criminal record, adding that  he did not also waste the court’s time.

In her judgment, Justice Soladoye held that the defendant admitted to defiling the girl.
She said : “I have listened carefully to the allocutus of the defence counsel. I hereby hold that the offence in question is a strict liability offence. An offence against a child is a violation of her chastity and I cannot imagine the emotional and physical scars she will endure for the rest of her life.

“Idowu Ismail Gbolahan, male, is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment. This is the judgment of this honourable court’’.

Dwyane Wade & Gabrielle Union, Support 11-Year-Old Son, At Gay Pride Parade

Gabrielle Union was dancing her ass off at the Pride Festival in Miami Beach this weekend ... and it was all to show support for her 11-year-old stepson, Zion.

Zion is Dwyane Wade's son from a previous relationship but he lives with Dwyane and Gabby full-time and Gabby treats him like blood.

While Wade wasn't at the event -- the Miami Heat had a game in Toronto -- the NBA star was certainly proud of his family, saying:

"Zion had his own cheering section today. Wish I was there to see you smile kid."


The Pride Festival in Miami Beach is one of the biggest LGBTQ events in the country -- with more than 145,000 people flocking to South Beach last year to celebrate together.

Gabby was having a blast -- dancing, taking pictures with fans and signing autographs.

Zion was sporting a rainbow ribbon and a big ol' smile!

Dwyane posted a photo of his older son, Zaire -- a HUGE prep basketball star -- with Zion at the parade along with the caption, "We support each other with pride."

He added, "It's a family thing."
