COVID-19: Makinde places ban on religious services, gatherings of over 30 people

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has announced the ban on social gatherings including religious services, weddings, parties, and burial ceremonies, saying such gatherings should be limited to 30 persons or less.

He also directed nightclubs to remain closed. He said the new measures will be reviewed in two weeks.

The Governor made the pronouncements during a late Monday night broadcast at the state owned broadcasting outfit, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), a repeat of which was done on Tuesday morning.

Makinde said, he understands how this pandemic will affect the people socially, economically and spiritually, but that the measures are the sacrifices that must be made to preserve and protect the people.

He also gave the efforts made so far in combating the pandemic while reassuring the people of the efforts been made to contain the spread.

Makinde said in the broadcast, “My dear good people of Oyo State, on Saturday, 21st March 2020, the first case of the novel Coronavirus Disease was confirmed in Oyo State.

“This new development calls for stepping up even further, the measures that our administration is taking to prevent, contain and control the spread of this illness.

“This is the time to come together as a people to fight a common enemy, COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus.

“Since the identification of the Ekiti case on the 18th of March, 2020, the Oyo State Government has ramped up its preparedness for any possible outbreak of the pandemic. We set up a COVID-19 Task Force which I am heading. We have activated the Disease Surveillance and Notification System Officers in the 33 Local Government Areas and the 35 Local Council Development Areas.

“We are collaborating with the College of Medicine to set up two Diagnostic Centres at the University College Hospital, Ibadan which will begin operations by the end of the week. Both are awaiting the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control’s validation. We are also awaiting reagents for testing which have been ordered.

“We have also set up an additional isolation centre by redesignating the Maternal and Health Centre at Olodo as the Oyo State Infectious Disease Centre with a capacity for over 100 cases. Rehabilitation of the isolation centre is ongoing.

“As a result of the newly designated isolation centre at Olodo, we have now reduced the previous five isolation centres to three. They are:

“Ten-bed isolation centre at Jericho Chest Hospital, Ibadan

“Four-bed isolation centre at University College Hospital, Ibadan

“Four-bed isolation centre at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso

“We have purchased and are presently refitting two dedicated ambulances for conveying critical cases to the isolation centres, while emergency personal protective gears have been provided for health workers with more already ordered.

“Also, the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) has been set up and is now operational with an Incidence Manager, Dr. Taiwo Ladipo of the Ministry of Health. In addition, a five-member committee of experts has been approved to act as sub-committee for the EOC. We have provided numbers to call in case of emergencies.

“I have already directed that all public and private schools in Oyo State should be closed until after Easter. The ongoing workers’ verification exercise has been suspended. The Free Health Mission has also been suspended.

“All returning expatriate staffers in the state are presently in isolation and are being monitored.

“However, with the confirmation of the first case and a clear understanding of how this disease can be transmitted, it cannot remain business as usual. We have postponed the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Summit, indefinitely. We have also postponed the Agribusiness Summit, indefinitely.

“Therefore, I am obligated to place a ban on gatherings such as religious services, weddings, parties, burial ceremonies and so on, gatherings should be limited to 30 persons or less. Nightclubs will have to remain closed. These measures will be reviewed in two weeks.

“I want to make it clear that I understand how this pandemic will affect us socially, economically and spiritually, but these are the sacrifices we need to make to preserve and protect our loved ones.

“Remember, some people among us can be asymptomatic. They can be carriers of the virus without showing any physical symptoms. This is why proper hygienic practices, social distancing and staying at home are very important.

“In times of anxiety, people want to come together physically and draw strength from the presence of others, but the advice on how to contain this virus is that we should do the exact opposite.

“This disease, this virus is disrupting our lives in ways that we never imagined any disease would. But we can conquer it. We have seen the number of new cases drop in other places around the world and we have to copy all they did, as far as our local circumstances can permit, to keep the numbers here in manageable proportions.

“Again, I enjoin everyone to work with us and do everything in their power to practice social distancing. With commitment and the grace of God we shall conquer this.”

Baker tricks Instagram with hilarious toilet roll CAKE amid coronavirus supermarket shortages

You'd be hard pressed to stroll into a supermarket and be met with an endless supply of toilet paper since the coronavirus outbreak has caused shortages across the world due to people stockpiling.

But a talented baker has used his cake-making skills to shed light of the situation by creating the most amazing cake that, from the outside  looks just like a roll of toilet paper, but once cut open reveals a mouth-watering four-tier chocolate cake

Ben Cullen, 29, from Chester, fooled his 155,000 Instagram followers when he posted a series of snaps showcasing his latest creation as he urged people to look after vulnerable members in their community during the coronavirus pandemic.

Alongside the pictures of the amazing cake, he wrote: "If everyone took this pandemic as seriously as we apparently take toilet roll we've got half a chance! Look out for yourselves, your families and anyone vulnerable you can help!," while using the hashtags #toiletpaper #cake #corona

The life-like cake attracted the attention of many across social media, with a huge number of followers admitting they didn't initially realise it was a cake.

And there's very little wonder why, because like with all of Ben's cake creations, the toilet roll cake looks so real that you couldn't possibly tell it's even a cake at all until it's cut open and the edible chocolate and vanilla sponge is revealed.

Clearly impressed by the baker's skills, one person wrote: " At first I was like... who posts a f****** tissue paper!!?? Then I swiped and omfg.. A wholesome cake.. all hail bakers magic by @the_bakeking,"

While another bemused onlooker said: "Omfg!!! That looked JUST LIKE TP!!! I mean all ur stuff does but this one actually had me fooled, I though maybe this one time u posted a real item not a cake  -  LOVE IT!!!! Amazing as always!!."

And a third fab joked: " Love it! How much mate? The bog roll situation is getting bad out here."

The cake creation was also posted on Ben's Facebook page in addition to a step-by-step video detailing how he put the incredible cake together - which has since been shared almost 3,000 times across social media.

Juventus star Gonzalo Higuain broke quarantine rules in Italy to be with his mum

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain controversially broke quarantine rules in Italy to be with his cancer-stricken mother, his brother has revealed.

The former Chelsea forward, 32, fled the coronavirus-hit country - where almost 5,000 people have died - seven days into a recommended two-week quarantine to go back to his native Argentina.

One report claimed he was stopped by police as he left Turin to travel through France and Spain in order to be at the side of his mother Nancy, although it's unclear if this was true.

Higuain's actions did leave his lawyer Rinaldo Romanelli "at the very least perplexed", and he said the frontman should have observed the quarantine guidelines.

There are conflicting reports on who gave ex-Real Madrid star Higuain permission to leave.

Romanelli claimed to be in the dark about who gave him the OK, whereas other reports in Italy say Juventus allowed Higuain to fly.

But now Higuain's brother Nicola has snapped back at Romanelli and requested privacy while they be with their mother at this difficult time.

Nicola wrote on a Facebook post: "Our mother, like so many other people in the world, is battling a disease called cancer.

"These people clearly don't care about my mother's health, they only care about mentioning the magic word that in this case is 'Higuain', that's how this business works.

"Obviously everyone knows who this message is for and I don't like to generalise.

Three doctors aged 30 and working in the same hospital test positive for coronavirus

Three junior doctors at the same NHS hospital have contracted coronavirus, it is reported.

It is believed the professionals, each aged 30, are on ventilators and are being treated by colleagues at a hospital which has not been named.

They are three of the 1,965 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the capital alone.

An insider told The Sun: “They are not in a good way and they got ill precisely because they were helping other people.

“Hopefully they are all strong enough to fight off the virus. But it serves as a warning to younger people not to be complacent.

“It is beginning to affect a lot more young people. Some will get mild symptoms — but not all will, and what has happened to the junior doctors shows that.”

More than 200 people who were diagnosed with coronavirus in the UK have since died.

12-year old girl with no underlying health conditions is fighting for her life after contracting coronavirus

A 12-year-old with no pre-existing medical conditions is fighting for life on a ventilator after contracting coronavirus.

The girl, who has been named only as Emma, was diagnosed with pneumonia on March 15 and tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday night.

She is currently in a stable condition in isolation at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta-Scottish Rite Hospital in the US.

However, Emma requires a ventilator to breath for her after her lungs became badly affected.

Her cousin Justin Anthony, told CNN that her condition should serve as a warning for those young people unconcerned by the disease.

“Here's a 12-year-old fighting for her life," he told CNN.

“People need to practice social distancing. People need to take care of their children.”

Earlier he wrote on Facebook : "They (Scottish Rite doctors) think she may be one of the youngest cases in GA, and she has zero health issues.

"She was first diagnosed with penumonia.

"Two days ago she started coughing blood and her lungs for worse and she had a transufison.

"They then had to put a central line to her heart.

"Her vitals are better today but she's on a ventilator and unable to breath on her own. Please pray for her safety."

Health experts in the UK and the US have warned older people with underlying health problems that they are most at risk from the coronavirus.

Tokyo 2020: Olympics to be postponed until 2021

It comes after the chairman of the British Olympic Association said Great Britain would be unlikely to send a team to Tokyo this summer.

Australia and Canada have already said they will not compete in Japan.

"On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided," Pound told USA today.

"The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on 24 July, that much I know."

Coronavirus pandemic is 'accelerating', WHO warns

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the coronavirus disease pandemic is "accelerating", with more than 300,000 cases now confirmed.

It took 67 days from the first reported of Covid-19 to reach 100,000 cases, 11 days for the second 100,000, and just four days for the third 100,000.

But WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it was still possible to "change the trajectory".

He urged countries to adopt rigorous testing and contact-tracing strategies.

"What matters most is what we do. You can't win a football game by defending. You have to attack as well," he told a joint news conference with Fifa president Gianni Infantino to launch a "kick out coronavirus" campaign featuring footballers.

Dr Tedros said asking people to stay at home and other physical-distancing measures were an important way of slowing down the spread of the virus, but described them as "defensive measures that will not help us to win".

"To win, we need to attack the virus with aggressive and targeted tactics - testing every suspected case, isolating and caring for every confirmed case, and chasing and quarantining every close contact."

Trump says coronavirus not Asian Americans' fault

US President Donald Trump - under fire for labelling Covid-19 the "Chinese virus" - has said Asian Americans should not be blamed for the outbreak.

He said it is "very important that we totally protect" Asian Americans, whom he praised as "amazing people".

Mr Trump spoke out amid rising reports of verbal and physical attacks on the community amid the pandemic.

Coronavirus is still spreading in the US, which currently has more than 43,000 confirmed cases and 533 deaths.

At a White House coronavirus task force news conference on Monday, Mr Trump said: "It is very important that we totally protect our Asian American community in the United States and all around the world.

"They're amazing people and the spreading of the virus is not their fault in any way, shape or form.

"They're working closely with us to get rid of it - we will prevail together."

Asked by a reporter why he had spoken out, Mr Trump said: "It seems that there could be a little bit of nasty language toward the Asian Americans in our country and I don't like that at all.

"These are incredible people, they love our country and I'm not going to let it happen."

Scientists fear GORILLAS can catch and die from coronavirus because of their similarity to humans

Conservationists have warned that endangered species including Africa's mountain gorilla are at risk of contracting coronavirus.

The Virunga National Park in Congo, which is currently home to around one third of the world's mountain gorillas, has taken the decision to ban all visitors until June 1.

It cited 'advice from scientific experts indicating that primates, including mountain gorillas, are likely susceptible to complications arising from the COVID-19 virus.'

Primates are prone to many of the same respiratory illnesses that afflict humans.

Even a common cold is enough to kill a gorilla, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature, which is one of the reasons why tourists tracking the animals are not normally permitted to get too close.

And Virunga National Park's decision has been welcomed by conservationists in the region.

Paula Kahumbu, chief executive of the Kenya-based conservation group WildlifeDirect, said that 'every possible effort must be made' to protect mountain gorillas because there are so few left in the wild.

She added: 'We know that gorillas are very sensitive to human diseases.

'If anyone has a cold or a flu they are not allowed to go and see the gorillas.

'With coronavirus having such a long time of no symptoms in some cases, it means that we could actually put those gorillas at risk.'

But existing protective measures may not be enough to protect them.

Ugandan conservationist Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka warned that the rule on keeping a safe distance from gorillas was broken almost every time a group of tourists visited.

My son did not attend Ibadan PDP rally – Atiku

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to reports that his son refused to isolate himself upon return.

Atiku had on Sunday revealed that his son tested positive for the deadly disease.

He said he has been moved to Gwagwalada specialist hospital.

But reports on Monday emerged that Atiku’s son attended a popular club in Abuja, as well as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s rally that was held in Ibadan.

But reacting Atiku in a statement by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe debunked the reports.

Describing the reports as a ‘false narrative,’ Atiku said his son returned to the country on 17th March via Switzerland from some business engagements in France and Switzerland and isolated himself when he returned to Abuja.

He urged Nigerians to disregard the ‘perfidious information that his son accessed open location.

The statement reads, “The clinical case attended a private meeting of six (6) persons same day in Lagos, stayed in his private house for the night and took an Aero 5.20pm flight to Abuja on the 18th.

“The case did not travel with his family or any other but travelled alone by Emirates Airline.
The case wore face mask as a precautionary measure since his arrival in Nigeria.

“The case did not show symptoms of infection and voluntarily placed a call to NCDC on arrival in Abuja late on the 18th to inform them he had returned from COVID-19 prone country and desired to be tested.

“On the 19th, NCDC took his blood sample which result came positive on the 20th. He subsequently went into self-isolation to protect his family within his own house.

“Meantime his son has since tested negative while his wife’s result is being awaited. The two persons are currently in self-isolation.

“We urge members of the public to disregard the perfidious information that the case accessed open location. He was not at Play Lounge nor any other club in Abuja as being mischievously bandied about.

“The case neither attended the Friday Jumu’a prayers nor any social gathering until his evacuation to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital on the 20th where he is being treated and managed.

“We thank Nigerians for their prayers and support through this difficult time. Once again, it needs to be restated that the risk and danger of #COVID19 is real.”
