Rwandan who breached lockdown ‘killed by crocodile’

A man in Rwanda who breached the ongoing lockdown to reportedly go fishing has been killed and eaten by a crocodile, the mayor of the southern Kamonyi district has told the BBC.

Alice Kayitesi said the Wednesday morning incident happened in the Nyabarongo river.

"He had broken the stay-home rule, he’s among very few people here who are not co-operating with the lockdown to stop the [corona]virus," Ms Kayitesi said.

The authorities in Rwanda imposed a total lockdown on Sunday as cases of Covid-19 continued to rise.

The East African nation has confirmed 40 cases so far, the highest in the region.

The shutdown of economic activities in the country has severely affected majority of people who are low-income earners.

The government said that it would help those struggling amidst the strict measures.

Tanzania President says he will not shutdown religious places as those are the only places people can find healing for COVID-19

Tanzania President John Magufuli has announced that his government would not shut down places of worship over the highly contagious coronavirus that has so far claimed 14,746 lives worldwide.

According to Magufuli, these are the only places where true healing can be found.

“These Holy places are where God is. My fellow Tanzanians, let us not be afraid of going to praise Him,” he said

Magufuli went ahead and told a congregation in Tanzania where he had attended a church service that the Covid-19 virus is Satanic and cannot survive while in the “body of Christ”.

“Corona cannot survive in the body of Christ, it will burn. That is exactly why I did not panic while taking the Holy communion,” he said while the congregation cheered.

Magufuli has however been on the receiving end of social media criticism for allegedly misleading his people to assemble in churches and mosques, which puts them at a higher risk of contracting and spreading the deadly virus.

Soyinka hits out at Nigerian preachers over coronavirus

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has criticised the response of the Nigerian government and religious leaders to coronavirus.

Over the weekend some preachers in the country ignored government directives about social distancing and went ahead with Sunday services, which were attended by thousands of congregants.

Speaking with BBC's Charles Mgbolu, Soyinka said the government should have had enough isolation centres, well-stocked pharmacies and research centres that would have helped deal with the crisis.

Prof Soyinka has been in self-isolation for nine days after returning from the United States.

Covid-19: Italian nurse kills herself after testing positive

An Italian nurse killed herself after testing positive for coronavirus and fearing she had infected others, a nursing federation has revealed.

Daniela Trezzi, 34, was working on the front line of the coronavirus crisis at a hospital in Lombardy, the worst-affected region of Italy.

The National Federation of Nurses of Italy confirmed her death and expressed its 'pain and dismay' in a statement last night.

The federation said the nurse had been suffering 'heavy stress' because she feared she was spreading the virus while trying to bring the crisis under control.

It came as Italy's death toll surged again yesterday with 743 new fatalities recorded in one day, dampening hopes that the tide was starting to turn.

However, the number of total infections rose by just eight per cent - the lowest level since Italy registered its first death on February 21.
Daniela Trezzi had been working on the intensive care ward at the San Gerardo hospital in Monza, around nine miles from Milan, but was in quarantine after showing coronavirus symptoms and testing positive for the disease.

The nursing group also revealed that 'a similar episode had happened a week ago in Venice, with the same underlying reasons'.

'Each of us has chosen this profession for good and, unfortunately, also for bad: we are nurses,' the federation said.

'The condition and stress to which our professionals are subjected is under the eyes of all.'

The general manager of San Gerardo hospital, Mario Alparone , said Daniela had been at home sick since March 10, and that 'she was not under surveillance'.

Judicial authorities are now investigating her death, according to local media.

Figures released by an Italian research institute yesterday showed that some 5,760 health workers had been infected with coronavirus. \

16-year-old appointed king in Ondo State

A 16-year-old Prince, Oloyede Adeyeoba, has been approved by the Ondo state government as the Arujale of Okeluse in Ose local government area of the state.

The ratification of the appointment of the Senior Secondary 3 Student was done alongside two others by the state executive council presided over by Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu in Akure, the state capital.

Briefing newsmen in Akure, after the meeting, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lola Fagbemi, said Ogunmolasuyi’s appointment followed an election conducted by king-makers in the community.

Fagbemi said the ratification was arrived at after hours of deliberations by the Council. Meanwhile, a family source from the community of the 16-year-old new king said that the young king is the only son of the late monarch and that if the installation should be delayed till he is of age, manipulation could set in.

According to him “the tradition of the community entails that if a King is dead, his younger brother would act as a Regent while the heir to the throne will be sent on exile for 90days to undergo traditional rites.

He, however, noted that the leaders of the community took precautions to avoid crisis and made the first daughter of the late king the regent, the first time such would happen in the history of the town, while the heir would go into seclusion. ” When an Okeluse Oba joins his ancestors, his immediate younger brother becomes the regent, who acts until the Oba “elect” returns from seclusion.

“But our late monarch had a son. The family thought it would be dangerous to have one of the brothers of the late Oba as a regent because he may not want to relinquish power in the future.

“The regent is Princess Aderonke Adeyeoba, the late king’s first daughter. So far, the transition has been very peaceful and smooth. “In Okeluse, the Obaship title is from father to son. It is the Oba’s family who exclusively handles the installation of a new Oba in Okeluse.

The source noted that “The young son will go back to school and by the grace of God to the university so that the institution will not tie him down.

The two other appointments made by the state government include that of Prince Ebenezer Adewunmi Ogunmolasuyi as the Olupenmen of Upenmen in Owo local government area of Ondo State and Prince Olorunsola Akinyelure as Odogbo of Ode Omi in Irele council area.

Manchester United to sign Ighalo for £15m in the summer

Manchester United are ready to sign Odion Ighalo for up to £15million this summer after it emerged the Nigerian striker’s loan runs out on May 31.

Sportsmail can reveal Ighalo’s temporary move from Shanghai Shenhua is set to end a month earlier than most loan deals.

United may have to negotiate an extension with the Chinese club if the Premier League season -- on hold until the end of April continues into June, although world players’ union FIFPro is working on a solution to the contract uncertainty caused by the coronavirus crisis.

Either way, there is already a willingness at Old Trafford to sign Ighalo permanently after the former Watford striker scored four goals in his first eight matches.

Shanghai are prepared to sell Ighalo and have put a £15m valuation on the player, who will be 31 in June. They did not ask for a loan fee in January because United agreed to contribute £130,000 a week towards Ighalo’s wages of £300,000 a week.

Ighalo was initially seen as a stop-gap signing after United failed with a bid to bring in Bournemouth’s Josh King on deadline day.

However, he has impressed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with his performances after having to train alone due to concerns over his arrival from Shanghai at the height of the coronavirus outbreak in China.

Zimbabwe broadcaster, 30, dies from coronavirus

The death of Zimbabwean broadcaster Zororo Makamba, 30, is a tragic illustration that even the young can succumb to coronavirus.

Makamba had a high profile as a broadcaster and had come from a wealthy family.

He was diagnosed with coronavirus on Saturday, and his condition deteriorated rapidly after he was admitted to an isolation centre in the capital, Harare.

Meanwhile, the first man to contract the virus is said to be recovering well in self-isolation.

There are concerns about Zimbabwe’s ability to cope with the disease, even if there are only a few cases. A nation which, at the best of times, has shortages of basics such as painkillers, gloves and masks, and a more critical shortage of ventilators and oxygen tanks.

As reality sinks in, Zimbabweans have begun observing a ban on large gatherings.

COVID-19: Makinde places ban on religious services, gatherings of over 30 people

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has announced the ban on social gatherings including religious services, weddings, parties, and burial ceremonies, saying such gatherings should be limited to 30 persons or less.

He also directed nightclubs to remain closed. He said the new measures will be reviewed in two weeks.

The Governor made the pronouncements during a late Monday night broadcast at the state owned broadcasting outfit, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), a repeat of which was done on Tuesday morning.

Makinde said, he understands how this pandemic will affect the people socially, economically and spiritually, but that the measures are the sacrifices that must be made to preserve and protect the people.

He also gave the efforts made so far in combating the pandemic while reassuring the people of the efforts been made to contain the spread.

Makinde said in the broadcast, “My dear good people of Oyo State, on Saturday, 21st March 2020, the first case of the novel Coronavirus Disease was confirmed in Oyo State.

“This new development calls for stepping up even further, the measures that our administration is taking to prevent, contain and control the spread of this illness.

“This is the time to come together as a people to fight a common enemy, COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus.

“Since the identification of the Ekiti case on the 18th of March, 2020, the Oyo State Government has ramped up its preparedness for any possible outbreak of the pandemic. We set up a COVID-19 Task Force which I am heading. We have activated the Disease Surveillance and Notification System Officers in the 33 Local Government Areas and the 35 Local Council Development Areas.

“We are collaborating with the College of Medicine to set up two Diagnostic Centres at the University College Hospital, Ibadan which will begin operations by the end of the week. Both are awaiting the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control’s validation. We are also awaiting reagents for testing which have been ordered.

“We have also set up an additional isolation centre by redesignating the Maternal and Health Centre at Olodo as the Oyo State Infectious Disease Centre with a capacity for over 100 cases. Rehabilitation of the isolation centre is ongoing.

“As a result of the newly designated isolation centre at Olodo, we have now reduced the previous five isolation centres to three. They are:

“Ten-bed isolation centre at Jericho Chest Hospital, Ibadan

“Four-bed isolation centre at University College Hospital, Ibadan

“Four-bed isolation centre at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso

“We have purchased and are presently refitting two dedicated ambulances for conveying critical cases to the isolation centres, while emergency personal protective gears have been provided for health workers with more already ordered.

“Also, the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) has been set up and is now operational with an Incidence Manager, Dr. Taiwo Ladipo of the Ministry of Health. In addition, a five-member committee of experts has been approved to act as sub-committee for the EOC. We have provided numbers to call in case of emergencies.

“I have already directed that all public and private schools in Oyo State should be closed until after Easter. The ongoing workers’ verification exercise has been suspended. The Free Health Mission has also been suspended.

“All returning expatriate staffers in the state are presently in isolation and are being monitored.

“However, with the confirmation of the first case and a clear understanding of how this disease can be transmitted, it cannot remain business as usual. We have postponed the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Summit, indefinitely. We have also postponed the Agribusiness Summit, indefinitely.

“Therefore, I am obligated to place a ban on gatherings such as religious services, weddings, parties, burial ceremonies and so on, gatherings should be limited to 30 persons or less. Nightclubs will have to remain closed. These measures will be reviewed in two weeks.

“I want to make it clear that I understand how this pandemic will affect us socially, economically and spiritually, but these are the sacrifices we need to make to preserve and protect our loved ones.

“Remember, some people among us can be asymptomatic. They can be carriers of the virus without showing any physical symptoms. This is why proper hygienic practices, social distancing and staying at home are very important.

“In times of anxiety, people want to come together physically and draw strength from the presence of others, but the advice on how to contain this virus is that we should do the exact opposite.

“This disease, this virus is disrupting our lives in ways that we never imagined any disease would. But we can conquer it. We have seen the number of new cases drop in other places around the world and we have to copy all they did, as far as our local circumstances can permit, to keep the numbers here in manageable proportions.

“Again, I enjoin everyone to work with us and do everything in their power to practice social distancing. With commitment and the grace of God we shall conquer this.”
