Rio Ferdinand sends message to Manchester United over permanent Odion Ighalo transfer move

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has backed calls for the club to sign Odion Ighalo permanently at the end of the season and has compared the striker’s impact to that of Henrik Larsson in the 2006/07 season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was intent on bolstering his attacking options following Marcus Rashford’s back injury and and eyebrows were raised when the Red Devils reached an agreement for Ighalo on the final day of the January transfer window.

The 30-year-old forward had been plying his trade in the Chinese Super League with Shanghai Greenland Shenhua and there were serious doubts over whether he would be able to replicate the form he showed at Watford from 2014 to 2017.

But Ighalo, a lifelong United fan, has been a revelation since returning to these shores, racking up four goals and one assist in his opening eight appearances, and the latest reports suggest the club plan to sign him permanently for £15million this summer.

Discussing these rumours during a Q&A session with his Instagram followers, ex-United defender Ferdinand said:

‘Wow, eight games, three starts in that, four goals and one assist. Ighalo, do you sign him for Manchester United now? ‘All them people that out there that were saying: “What are we doing signing Ighalo? What’s going on? What’s Ole thinking?” – I was one of them, I have to admit it.

“Ighalo’s been in China, the league’s nowhere near what the Premier League is so how’s he gonna get up to speed? Is he gonna be ready straight away? We need somebody to come and make an impact immediately. Coming from China, impossible”. Well he’s proved us all wrong. ‘This guy has proved us all wrong. It’s refreshing to see someone who is like a supporter, who is thankful. He looks like he’s absolutely delighted to be at Manchester United.

He’s been a Manchester United supporter his whole life. He looks like he’s saying “thank you” every day he walks up to Ole for giving him this opportunity. He’s not someone who says “MManchester United are lucky to have me here” – that’s the vibe I’ve got for a little while and that’s not just United, that’s other clubs as well.

‘This boy looks like he’s happy to be here: “Whatever you tell me to do I’m gonna go out there and do it to the best of my ability. I’m gonna give you 100 per cent every day in training and in matches because I love this club and I want to do right by this club”. I love it. ‘It’s shocked me to see what he’s done.

Listen, we’re not talking like he’s turned Man United into world-beaters but United needed something and he’s brought it in and given it and that’s all you can ask for. ‘And I think he’s warranted the opportunity to come in as a full-time player and what he’s given Manchester United which they didn’t have is someone they can pass the ball into and can hold it up, he’s got a physical presence, he can hold off a defender or two and lay the ball in for someone else to score.’

92 Chad soldiers killed in 'deadliest' Boko Haram attack

At least 92 soldiers from Chad have been killed in the deadliest-ever attack by the Boko Haram armed group on the country's military forces, President Idriss Deby said on Tuesday.

"We lost 92 of our soldiers, non-commissioned officers and officers," the president said of the attack overnight on Sunday in Boma.

"It’s the first time we have lost so many men," he added, after visiting the site of the incident in Lac province, which borders Niger and Nigeria.

The attack on soldiers on the Boma peninsula lasted at least seven hours and reinforcements sent to help out were also hit, one soldier told AFP news agency.

He said 24 army vehicles were destroyed, including armoured vehicles and Boko Haram carried off weapons stolen from the military in speedboats.

"The enemy has hit at our defences hard in this zone," a senior officer said.

The attack is part of an expanding armed campaign in the vast, marshy Lake Chad area, where the borders of Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria converge.

Kylie Jenner's nephew Mason spills her secrets on Instagram

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick's son Mason has dished the dirt on some huge family secrets as he chatted to fans on Instagram live.

The eldest of Kris Jenner's grandkids went rogue as he opened up about a host of subjects, including if auntie Kylie Jenner is back together with Travis Scott or not.

"No, Kylie and Travis are not back together," said the ten-year-old in response to a question from a fan.

Earlier this month, Kylie appeared to plant clues that she had reunited with her ex love when she shared throwback pictures of them together on her social media page.

The lip kit mogul then also made sure she was spotted in a pair of Travis' unreleased Cactus Jack Nike SB Dunk Lows sending fans into meltdown.

But Mason was more than happy to debunk the theory as he chatted away to fans.

But the thousands who enjoyed hearing stories from Mason will be gutted to find that his official Instagram page has now been mysteriously deleted.

Social media users flocked to Twitter to joke about Mason's tell-all chat.

"The grandkids are growing up and letting the tea slip without knowing it!" laughed one fan.

While others suggested momager Kris Jenner was behind his Instagram page's removal.

"Mason got on LIVE on his secret instagram and started spilling tea, the blogs picked it up & the entire Instagram got deleted .. lmao Kris Jenner don’t play that," joked one on Twitter.

Another praised the drama as just the entertainment we need during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Mason Disick getting an Instagram account, saying Kylie and Travis aren’t together, getting his account deleted, and making national news is EXACTLY what I needed tonight. RUN HIM HIS MONEY," joked one.

Michael Jackson 'predicted coronavirus and that's why he wore a facemask'

Michael Jackson 's former bodyguard claims he always wore a facemask because he predicted coronavirus.

The King of Pop, who tragically died in 2009 aged 50, is said to have foreseen a global virus pandemic like the one going on right now.

And his ex-bodyguard Matt Fiddes says that's why he always wore a facemask despite being mocked for it.

Brit Matt, who looked after the singer for a decade, said that while Michael was travelling the globe on tour, he realised that there was potential for a virus like COVID-19 to spread, and therefore took measures to prevent himself from ever catching it.

The 41-year-old told The Sun : "He knew that a natural disaster was always there. He was very aware and would always predict that we could be wiped out at any time. That a germ that could spread.

"So he would go through four countries in one day sometimes and he was on aeroplanes with people all the time."

Matt said he'd jokingly ask Michael not to wear the facemask because he was embarrassed about being pictured with him when he was wearing it.

He added: "He would say, 'Matt I can’t get ill, I can’t let my fans down. I’ve got concerts coming up. I’m on this earth for a reason. I mustn’t damage my voice, I’ve got to stay healthy, I don’t know who I’m going to encounter today, I don’t know what I might pass on'."

Matt says that if Michael were alive today he'd tell people "I told you so".

He also said the star would be frustrated that nobody was listening to him because "people didn't take him seriously".

Matt also insisted that Michael wasn't a germophobe, and simply wanted to protect his voice so that he never disappointed his fans.

The coronavirus pandemic has claimed hundreds of lives in the UK and thousands around the world.

Covid-19: Air Peace to suspend flight operations Friday

Air Peace has announced the suspension of all its flight services as from Friday, 27th March. In a statement signed by its Chief Operating Officer, Mrs. Toyin Olajide, Air Peace said, “It is with a great sense of responsibility that we have decided, in the best interest of our nation, our passengers and workforce, to suspend scheduled flight operations for 23 days effective 23.00hrs on Friday (an hour before midnight on Friday) the 27th day of March, 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic”.

“This difficult decision was reached in order to, not only, support the efforts of the Federal Government and other stakeholders in curbing the spread of this virus in our nation but also to protect our teeming passengers and our staff from becoming victims of the pandemic.”

Olajide said that it has to be equally noted that passenger traffic in the last three weeks has slumped drastically as a result of this pandemic, so it is therefore very unwise to continue raking up avoidable costs that the airline could ill afford.

Conflict-torn Libya confirms first coronavirus case

Libya's Centre for Disease Control has announced the North African country’s first confirmed case of coronavirus.

This comes after both the internationally recognised government in Tripoli and the rival administration in the east of the country imposed strict travel measures, shutting their air space and land borders last week.

Libya has been torn by conflict since Nato-backed forces overthrew long-serving ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

There have been reports of continued shelling in and around the capital, despite both sides of the conflict nominally backing an international call for a humanitarian ceasefire on the weekend to allow health officials to prepare against the virus

There are concerns that the healthcare system in Libya is under-prepared for the global pandemic, as the violence in the ongoing conflict continues.

Neighbouring Tunisia, which Libyans often travel to for medical treatment, shut its airspace and land borders last week to control the spread of coronavirus.

Rwandan who breached lockdown ‘killed by crocodile’

A man in Rwanda who breached the ongoing lockdown to reportedly go fishing has been killed and eaten by a crocodile, the mayor of the southern Kamonyi district has told the BBC.

Alice Kayitesi said the Wednesday morning incident happened in the Nyabarongo river.

"He had broken the stay-home rule, he’s among very few people here who are not co-operating with the lockdown to stop the [corona]virus," Ms Kayitesi said.

The authorities in Rwanda imposed a total lockdown on Sunday as cases of Covid-19 continued to rise.

The East African nation has confirmed 40 cases so far, the highest in the region.

The shutdown of economic activities in the country has severely affected majority of people who are low-income earners.

The government said that it would help those struggling amidst the strict measures.

Tanzania President says he will not shutdown religious places as those are the only places people can find healing for COVID-19

Tanzania President John Magufuli has announced that his government would not shut down places of worship over the highly contagious coronavirus that has so far claimed 14,746 lives worldwide.

According to Magufuli, these are the only places where true healing can be found.

“These Holy places are where God is. My fellow Tanzanians, let us not be afraid of going to praise Him,” he said

Magufuli went ahead and told a congregation in Tanzania where he had attended a church service that the Covid-19 virus is Satanic and cannot survive while in the “body of Christ”.

“Corona cannot survive in the body of Christ, it will burn. That is exactly why I did not panic while taking the Holy communion,” he said while the congregation cheered.

Magufuli has however been on the receiving end of social media criticism for allegedly misleading his people to assemble in churches and mosques, which puts them at a higher risk of contracting and spreading the deadly virus.

Soyinka hits out at Nigerian preachers over coronavirus

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has criticised the response of the Nigerian government and religious leaders to coronavirus.

Over the weekend some preachers in the country ignored government directives about social distancing and went ahead with Sunday services, which were attended by thousands of congregants.

Speaking with BBC's Charles Mgbolu, Soyinka said the government should have had enough isolation centres, well-stocked pharmacies and research centres that would have helped deal with the crisis.

Prof Soyinka has been in self-isolation for nine days after returning from the United States.

Prince Charles tests positive for coronavirus

The Prince of Wales has tested positive for coronavirus, Clarence House has announced.

Prince Charles, 71, is displaying mild symptoms "but otherwise remains in good health", a spokesman said, adding that the Duchess of Cornwall, 72, has been tested but does not have the virus.

Both Charles and Camilla are now self-isolating at Balmoral.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen last saw her son on 12 March, but also "remains in good health".

The Queen, the palace added, "is following all the appropriate advice with regard to her welfare".

A Clarence House statement read: "In accordance with government and medical advice, the prince and the duchess are now self-isolating at home in Scotland.

"The tests were carried out by the NHS in Aberdeenshire, where they met the criteria required for testing.

Covid-19: Italian nurse kills herself after testing positive

An Italian nurse killed herself after testing positive for coronavirus and fearing she had infected others, a nursing federation has revealed.

Daniela Trezzi, 34, was working on the front line of the coronavirus crisis at a hospital in Lombardy, the worst-affected region of Italy.

The National Federation of Nurses of Italy confirmed her death and expressed its 'pain and dismay' in a statement last night.

The federation said the nurse had been suffering 'heavy stress' because she feared she was spreading the virus while trying to bring the crisis under control.

It came as Italy's death toll surged again yesterday with 743 new fatalities recorded in one day, dampening hopes that the tide was starting to turn.

However, the number of total infections rose by just eight per cent - the lowest level since Italy registered its first death on February 21.
Daniela Trezzi had been working on the intensive care ward at the San Gerardo hospital in Monza, around nine miles from Milan, but was in quarantine after showing coronavirus symptoms and testing positive for the disease.

The nursing group also revealed that 'a similar episode had happened a week ago in Venice, with the same underlying reasons'.

'Each of us has chosen this profession for good and, unfortunately, also for bad: we are nurses,' the federation said.

'The condition and stress to which our professionals are subjected is under the eyes of all.'

The general manager of San Gerardo hospital, Mario Alparone , said Daniela had been at home sick since March 10, and that 'she was not under surveillance'.

Judicial authorities are now investigating her death, according to local media.

Figures released by an Italian research institute yesterday showed that some 5,760 health workers had been infected with coronavirus. \
