FG blasts Makinde for planning to re-open schools in Oyo

Oyo State government’s decision to reopen schools from June 29 is insensitive, the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba said on Monday.

He warned that such decision if taken could raise Covid-19 infection figures in the state.

As of 10pm on Monday, Oyo ranked fourth on the table with 621 active cases from the 912 infections figures, confirmed in the state by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The minister expressed concern over the Oyo government’s plan during the briefing by the Presidential Task Force on Covid -19 Control in Abuja.

Oyo state Governor Seyi Makinde had reeled out plans to reopen schools, worship centres and others against Federal Government's directive on closure of schools.

Nwajiuba, who said the Federal Ministry of Education did not give out any guideline to the state government to reopen schools, noted that governors have as their primary responsibility to secure the lives of their citizens, in the face of a pandemic.

He added that like all other sub-nationals, governors were under the Constitution of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Stressing why government cannot reopen schools at this time, the minister noted that reopening of schools could lead to the exposure of teachers, pupils, drivers, cooks, vendors, their family members and friends to the dreaded virus.

The minister said: “Out of the 774 local government areas in Nigeria, there are actually few local governments with a lot of this burden and therefore it is easy to get the perception around the edges of the country that some things are not happening because they are not happening within our immediate locality.

“But we must appreciate that the primary purpose of governors is the security of his citizens. Public health is key and primary and in that primary security delivery, they (governors), are always extremely cautious in making any pronouncements around this because the education sector holds the largest number of infrastructure in the country; a good 138,000 primary schools around the country.

“There are clearly 600 all kinds of institutions awarding certificates all around Nigeria there are just lots of it. And at any given time in Nigeria, there are two million people attaining one form of education or the other.

“For you to even begin to decide to unleash this in the public in the face of a pandemic is to be a very bit insensitive.

“The least we can do at the moment is to keep our children, our most priced assets, the future of Nigeria under lock and key first. When we are sure that it’s safe to release them, gladly we will.”

Nwajiuba also said the ministry was in discussion with examination bodies on how final year students could sit for their exams.

The royal has been with the Duchess of Cambridge and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk in recent weeks.

William turns 38 on Sunday which he will celebrate at Sandringham's Amner Hall due to the coronavirus crisis.

In one image taken by Kate, William and his three youngsters sit on a tree-swing posing for the camera.

In another the light-haired brood clamber on top of their father as he lies grinning on the ground.

William is just one of a number of royals who have celebrated birthdays during the coronavirus lockdown.

The Queen turned 94 and also marked her official birthday, the Duke of Edinburgh turned 99 earlier this month, while Louis turned two in April and Charlotte reached age five in May.

The royals have stayed apart during the pandemic and are scattered around the country at their various homes.

William has kept himself busy during the crisis with royal video calls, and in the past week has stepped up royal engagements.

The duke is the most senior royal in line to the throne who is not considered most at risk of coronavirus because of his age.

Nigeria wanted to take our land forcibly - Ghanaian monarch

A Ghanaian monarch says the Nigerian high commission in the country was aiding a businessman to forcibly take over the plot of land belonging to his people.

Joy News, a Ghanaian platform, quoted Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, paramount chief of Osu traditional area, as saying the land is different from the one being occupied by the high commission.

The staff quarters of the high commission which is still under construction was demolished by armed men.

While the federal government called for urgent action against the perpetrators, the Ghanaian government said it was investigating the incident.

The traditional ruler said the Nigerian high commission trespassed on the plot of land which he said belongs to the Osu stool.

He said they also gathered that the ongoing structure is “planned entertainment complex to be used as an events centre for commercial purposes” and not staff quarters as was reported.

“It came to the attention of the Osu Stool that the original building on the parcel of land was demolished and, in its place, a new structure was being erected,” he reportedly said in a statement.

“Osu Stool was informed that the structure was being erected by a Nigerian business person with the aid of the Nigerian High Commission and was forcibly trying to take over the said parcel of land.

“The Stool has a high level of respect for foreign missions and has therefore on several occasions verbally informed the unidentified trespasser of the ownership status of the land through the security personnel resident on the parcel of land.”

The monarch added that the “trespasser” was invited for discussion on the ownership of the land but the “trespasser has openly and with impunity disrespected the paramount Chief of the Osu Traditional Area, Stool Lands Authority and the Traditional Council of Elders by its attendant behaviour.”

“Forceful acquisition of these lands by trespassers who hide behind foreign offices and political influence should desist from doing so,” he said.

FG decides on interstate travel ban, others next week

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 said on Monday it had started reviewing the guidelines for lifting of the ban on interstate travels.

Speaking at the daily press briefing of the PTF in Abuja, the National Coordinator of the task force, Dr Sani Aliyu, said the roads would be opened when the bus termini in the country all had COVID-19 preventive measures in place.

Aliyu stated this as the PTF Chairman, Boss Mustapha, disclosed that the Federal Government would next week decide on its lockdown policies, including the ban on interstate movements.

The PTF coordinator said the guidelines submitted by the Minister of State for Transportation, Gbemisola Saraki, was being reviewed and the roads would be opened as soon as it is safe to do so.

He said, “At the moment, we still have restrictions on interstate travel. But we have been linking up with the Federal Ministry of Transportation through the Minister of State for Transportation.

“They have given us guidelines that they have developed : very detailed guidelines, and we have looked at them, summarised them and discussed at PTF last week.

“We have asked the Minister of State for Transportation to please engage with the road transport workers to make sure that the usual garages and parks that we have are ready in terms of guidelines that we have in place such as physical distancing, reducing the number of passengers per vehicle and provision of hand washing facilities etc.

“And I believe they are already working on this and hopefully, we should be able to open as soon as it is safe to do so.”

Aliyu expressed worry over the lack of compliance with safety protocols and urged states to increase the rate of their COVID-19 testing also asked them to make laws to make the wearing of masks in public space mandatory.

- FG to take decision month end

Meanwhile, Mustapha, said the Federal Government would at the end of the month take a crucial decision on the lockdown declared to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

Mustapha said, “At the beginning of the month of June, the PTF announced a one-month period for the implementation of the second phase of eased lock down.

“We have continued to monitor developments nationwide in order to take informed decisions at the end of the month. We have exactly eight days to that point of decision.”

While answering a question on whether the government might consider a total lockdown again, Mustapha assured Nigerians that the decision that would be taken by month end would not any way amount to a change in strategy.

He said if there would be a change in strategy, it would be expected to come from the side of Nigerians.

Man stabs lover to death in Lagos, commits suicide

A man, Chris Ndukwe, has reportedly committed suicide after stabbing his lover, Olamide Alli, to death at his place of residence on the Victory Point Estate in the Ilasan area of Lagos State.

Although the reasons for Ndukwe’s action remain unclear, Punch Metro gathered that the 39-year-old and Olamide had been in a complicated relationship that produced two children and they were living apart in the Ilasan and Ogba areas of the state.

Before the tragic incident, it was learnt that Olamide and her yet-to-be-identified sister visited Ndukwe in his house, and while the children and Olamide’s sister slept in a room, the lovers were said to have slept in another room.

However, a disagreement was said to have ensued between the lovers and Ndukwe allegedly stabbed the 25-year-old to death with knives and allegedly committed suicide by drinking a substance suspected to be an insecticide.

A source told punch Metro, “We don’t know why he killed her, because the two of them were the only ones in the room. “The man stabbed Olamide with knives and drank an insecticide to kill himself.”

The lovers’ bodies were discovered when the yet-to-be-identified sister went to ask them to tune down the volume of the music emanating from their room.

The Ilasan Police Division was immediately informed and its personnel found Olamide in a pool of her blood, while, Ndukwe was motionless and had a foamy substance coming out of his mouth.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the corpses had been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, had ordered an investigation into the case.

He stated that two blood-stained kitchen knives, two empty bottles of the insecticide, three empty cans of energy drink and a pair of pliers were recovered from the scene of the incident

Elkana stated, “On Sunday, June 21, 2020, around 4pm, the Ilasan Police Station received a piece of information that a couple, identified as Olamide Alli, 25, and Chris Ndukwe, 39, were found dead in the man’s residence on Road 5, House 16A, Victory Point Estate, Ilasan. A team of homicide detectives was deployed in the scene and the crime scene was preserved for forensic analysis.

“The woman was found lying in a pool of her own blood with deep cuts on her head. The man’s mouth was foaming with a whitish substance. It was alleged that the man stabbed the woman to death with kitchen knives and thereafter drank a poisonous substance suspected to be insecticide. Two blood-stained kitchen knives, two empty bottles of the poisonous substance, three empty cans of energy drink and a pair of pliers were recovered from the scene.

“The corpses were removed and deposited in a public mortuary for autopsy. Information gathered from some family members revealed that the couple were in a relationship for over seven years though they were not married, but had two boys, aged seven and three together. The relationship was described as complicated as the couple were on and off over the years. While the man lived at the Victory Point Estate, Ilasan, the woman lived in Ogba.

“The woman was said to have visited the man alongside her 22-year-old sister the night before the incident on his invitation. The woman’s sister was the first to notice that the couple were dead and raised the alarm. In her statement, she said she was roused from her sleep by the loud music from the room where the corpses were found, as she and the kids slept in a different room. It is not yet clear what triggered the murder, but investigation is ongoing.”

FBI commends EFCC on indictment of cyber criminals

The American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for offering assistance to it in the investigation and prosecution of six Nigerians involved in Business Email Compromise (BEC) and wire fraud in the United States of America.

The US Attorney, Joe Kelly, and Special FBI Agent, Kristi Johnson, in a release made available to the EFCC commended the commission for its “past and continued assistance in pursuing those that engage in Business Email Compromise and other fraud schemes”

Six Nigerians: Richard Izuchukwu Uzuh; Alex Afolabi Ogunshakin; Michael Olorunyomi; Felix Osilama Okpoh; Abiola Ayorinde, Kayode and Nnamdi Orson Benson were indicted and sanctioned by the FBI for conducting elaborate fraud schemes involving alleged stealing of more than $6 million from “individual victims and victim businesses both in Nebraska and other states”.

BECs are sophisticated cyber-crimes involving electronic transfer payments or automated clearing house transfers. The six Nigerians indicted by the FBI are accused of “violations of federal laws involving Conspiracy to commit wire fraud, punishable by up to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000, among others.

The FBI described the EFCC as one of its “foreign colleagues abroad” and expressed appreciation for its “commitment to working together”.

It would be recalled that the EFCC and FBI were involved in a joint field operation against cyber criminals in Nigeria in 2019 which yielded significant dividends.

The operation, codenamed “Operation Rewired”, was a hit against trans-Atlantic syndicates of cyber criminals operating in intricate, sophisticated networks.

A total of 167 Nigerians suspected of cybercrime were arrested and a total sum of $169,850 and N92,000,000 were recovered from the suspects.

The FBI also presented certificates to operatives of the EFCC that took part in the joint operation.

Lady with 5ft long hair says her incredibly long hair makes men fall in love with her

A real life Rapunzel says her lusciously long locks make her irresistible to men.

Malgorzata Kulczyk has been growing her hair since she was seven and rarely gets it cut.

She last visited the hairdressers for a trim five years ago and chooses to keep her own barnet in order by applying oils and serums to it.

The 34-year-old, who lives in London, now boasts a 5ft 2in ’do that’s taller than she is.

Her signature style has garnered her plenty of attention from her 10,000 Instagram followers and legion of male admirers.

Malgorzata said: ”Men can't believe it is real. They say it is 'beautiful, impressive and feminine'. Some even fall in love with me because of it.”

While many lust over Malgorzata’s hair, some envy it.

The Polish-born influencer revealed: "People can be jealous.

“There was one situation when a colleague kept telling me my hair was too long and that I should cut it.

“She said she thought it must be painful for me and that I probably spent so much time on it.

"But after a while she changed her mind completely and has even started to try to grow her own hair out.”

Thankfully, those who are green-eyed over the hairstyle don’t need to be.

Malgorzata has shared her top tips for growing out your hair, which understandably can be a lengthy process.

She said: "I would say to anyone wanting to grow their hair long that patience is the most important thing.

"In order to keep your hair in good condition, you need to take care of your body and eat healthy.

"Other things I'd recommend would be to keep hydrated, exercise and avoid stress.

“Nettle tea is especially very good for hair growth."

Growing out your tresses is apparently the hardest part as Malgorzata says they’re easier to maintain than you may expect.

She added: "My hair doesn't affect my daily life much.

“In my spare time I enjoy going to the beach and the mountains, where the sun is my natural hair brightener.

"I wash my hair up to three times a week and wear it as a different style a day ponytail, braid, or bun.

“I use only natural products, including anything mixed with coconut oil, which is my favourite.”

The trio used a fake Facebook account and then fraudulently operated the bank account to defraud innocent Nigerians of their hard earned monies under the pretext that the Foundation is raising money to help vulnerable Nigerians during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Investigations by the police operatives attached to the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) revealed that the brothers engaged extensively and serially in such frauds and other related cyber crimes.

During a manhunt of the fraudsters, Henry Ushie, senior brother to Emmanuel Ushie, was identified as the gang leader of the syndicate behind the scam.
