EFCC Chairman Magu Hits AGF Malami; Says ‘No Blackmail Can Stop Me’

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has stated that no amount of blackmail can deter him from fighting corruption in Nigeria.

Magu, an award-winning anti-corruption Czar, on Thursday, disclosed that those stealing Nigeria’s money must be stopped. Addressing a delegation of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Abuja, He said;

“Those stealing, embezzling, hiding and carrying our wealth away are not our friends. We must stop them. We must stop looters. We must stop the industry of corruption by all means and we shall surely stop them.”

“Fighting corruption is not a tea party. More than ever before, fraudsters are devising new techniques and strategies every day to beat established rules and systems. Besides, several fight-back ploys are also being fashioned to distract and discourage genuine fighters of corrupt practices. For us, all these strategies are all too-known. We are familiar with the desperation of fraudsters.”

Speaking on the accusations, Magu said he was aware of the ‘Blackmail and campaign of Calumny’ revealing that he will continue to fight and expose corruption.

“We are familiar with their blackmail and campaign of calumny but we will not give up. We will continue to expose and bring corrupt elements to book. We will never give up!”

The Attorney General of the Federation, AGF Abubakar Malami had called for the removal of Magu last week over alleged diversion of recovered loot for personal gain.

How Buhari Ambushed Oshiomhole, Other APC Leaders

Politics in this clime is about power and control. A new page was on Thursday turned in the affairs of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The tenure of Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) was terminated two years, two days after it came into office.

A Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Committee to run the affairs of the party and plan its national convention was inaugurated.

Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni is chairman of the caretaker panel with Senator John James Akpanudoede as secretary.

The members are Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola (Southwest), Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello (Northcentral), Senator Ken Nnamani (Southeast), Senator Abubakar Yusuf (Senate Rep.), Hon. Akinyemi Olaide (Reps.) and Mrs. Stella Oketete (Women Representative).

Other members are Dr. James Lalu (physically-challenged), Chief David Lyon (Southsouth), Senator Abba Ali (Northwest), Prof. Tahir Mamman (Northeast) and Mr. Ismail Ahmed (Youth).

The decisions were taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC) summoned on Thursday by feuding ex-deputy national secretary Victor Giadom, who was laying claim to the chairmanship granted him by an interim court order.

The meeting at Aso Villa, according to sources, was held without a pronounced agenda.

President Buhari merely read an address, in which he made proposals to end the impasse in the party.

There was no for a debate. They were merely robber stamped.

A source at the NEC meeting said decisions at the meeting were premeditated.

The source added that the meeting had no agenda but President Muhammadu Buhari only made some recommendations which became binding on NEC members.

“We were shocked that there was no agenda. All the decisions purportedly agreed at the NEC session were from a meeting held on Wednesday by some anti-Oshiomhole governors and others.

“The President just came in with their recommendations. We thought they were going to throw issues open for debate as expected in a democratic setting but there was nothing like that.

“The plot was already signed and sealed to the consternation of everybody.”

“It was an ambush”, one of the party leaders at the meeting said.

The caretaker’s first assignment was writing a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), notifying it of its new role and on the plan for the Ondo State primary election slated for July 20.

The President made the following proposals which were adopted without a debate.

*immediate discontinuation of all pending litigations involving the party and its members;

*ratifying the primary election conducted in Edo State;

*dissolving the current National Working Committee, and

*appointing Caretaker/Extra-ordinary Convention Planning committee.

On litigations, the President said: “The directive had been issued before, unfortunately some members failed to heed the directive. Thus, at this time, it must be made a Resolution of the Party which must be effectively enforced with dire consequences for members who choose to ignore the directive.”

The President said in order to return to the “winning ways”, the APC must maintain cohesion by closing its ranks.

“We must be alive to the time and the task that is before us. As we all know, we are immediately confronted with the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo States. Therefore, this is the time to get our acts together.”

Buhari added: “Fellow party members, this is a very crucial moment in the life of our party and it is with a deep sense of concern that I stand before you today to speak as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who has been elected on the platform of our great party – the All Progressives Congress.

“The issues currently confronting our party at this time are such that should worry every party member. At the moment, our great party is faced with internal wrangling; there are on-going litigations amongst some party members and we cannot clearly ascertain the status of certain National Working Committee (NWC) members”, he said.

The President expressed worry over the shifting loyalty within the party and inconsistency in leadership, which had opened the governing party to mockery.

“There are other associated disputes as to the legitimacy or otherwise of holders of certain National Offices of the Party. The Party is also contending with Judicial claims and counter-claims, orders and counter-orders and indeed Judgments and counter-judgments that are predominantly at cross-purposes.

“Confronted with these issues, it is obvious that the fortunes of the party are currently in jeopardy, administration of our party is becoming impossible and there is consequently an urgent need for intervention to immediately arrest further drifts and internal wrangling which may lead to total disintegration.

“What we see clearly emerging, is that we are beginning to self-destruct. This, my dear party members, is not just regrettable but utterly gut-wrenching.”

EFCC Seals Former Governor Theodore Orji's Properties

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has traced some property suspected to be from proceeds of fraud to former Abia governor, Sen. Theodore Orji.

Spokesperson of the commission, Mr Dele Oyewale disclosed this on Thursday in a telephone interview with NAN.

Oyewale said the property which were sealed in Umuahia, the state capital on June 24, 2020 were traced to the former governor in the course of ongoing investigations of Orji’s alleged financial malfeasance.

Recall that the property sealed by the EFCC included, the Abia Mall which accommodates ShopRite and other business entities, Benac Hotels opposite Broadcasting Corporation of Abia.

Also sealed was a housing estate situated at former Umuahia Main Market.

“Our investigations show that the property belongs to Theodore Orji and as part of the investigations, we have to seal them. That is exactly what we have done,” he said.

Oyewale said that investigations into the alleged financial fraud perpetrated by the former governor was ongoing, adding that the suspect would be charged to court in due time.

“We cannot give a time frame within which to charge him to court because our investigations are always thorough and very diligent,” he said.

The EFCC spokesperson said that the commission usually collaborated with and relies on information from relevant agencies during its investigations.

“The sealed property are proof of the ongoing investigations and the probe will determine if more will be sealed,” Oyewale said.

Sen. Orji, who represents Abia Central Senatorial zone in the National Assembly, was Abia governor between 2007 and 2015.

He had been under investigation by the anti-graft agency since 2018 for allegedly misappropriating over N48 billion.

Ajimobi: "I Wish To Live Only 70" - As Buhari, Tinubu Mourn Ex-Governor

Former governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi is dead. He reportedly died from Coronavirus complications at a Lagos hospital, at the age of 70.

According to a clip seen by this platform, 70 is the initial age Ajimobi said he had told God to grant him, as his own father died two months before turning 70.

President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with government and people of Oyo State over the death of Ajimobi.

Buhari said Ajimobi’s contributions to the development of the state, and nation, will always be remembered.

The President also commiserated with the late Ajimobi's family.

In his reaction, APC national leader, Bola Tinubu said:
"Our party, the All Progressives Congress, has lost one of its leading lights. The Yoruba race and Oyo State have lost a favourite son. I have lost a dedicated friend, brother and ally.

The pain we feel at his passing is beyond what words can describe. This good and excellent man has left us but his energy, activism and commitment to Nigeria and its people shall always be with us.

He was reputed to be the best and most productive governor Oyo State has had. In this assessment, I concur as do so many others. The numerous infrastructural and public works projects he initiated literally changed the face of Oyo for the better.

His legacy as a governor will be an enduring and positive one. The first governor to serve two consecutive terms in Oyo, he broke a political jinx that many said could not be broken."

EFCC Storms Ex-Abia Deputy Governor's Son Premises (Photos)

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday stormed the premises of Engr. Enyinnaya Nwafor, son of late former deputy governor of Abia State, Dr. Chima Nwafor.

The junior Nwafor is the founder and chief executive officer of Tunnel End, and Rock Waters Integrated Services Ltd., two construction companies headquartered in Aba.

Some buildings in the company's premises were marked by the EFCC officials, during the operation which lasted for hours. It was a joint operation which had men of the Nigerian police.

Nwafor is said to be a subject of investigation over alleged fraud and failed contracts. Some roads topping the list include the Unuaro/Ekwereazu road in Obingwa Local Government Area of the state.

Governor of Abia, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu had recently ordered the contractor back to site after some portions of the road failed. The road only lasted for about six months - December 2018 to June 2019.

Ikpeazu had expressed anger over the poor construction done on the road, which is currently the only route in and out of Aba from Akwa Ibom and Cross Rivers States, due to complete failure of all federal roads linking the states.

He said the poor work on the Ekwereazu road didn’t meet the standard of roads done by his administration, ordering the contractor back to site to undertake a full reconstruction of the road.

Plans are said to ve on ground for the EFCC to immediately invite Engr. Nwafor to Abuja, the nation's capital, for further questioning and investigation.

Jennifer Aniston has given fans a rare glimpse of a mysterious new tattoo during a video call with former Friends co-star Lisa Kudrow.

The actress, 51, was chatting to her former co-star during Variety 's Actors on Actors issue, in which the pair discussed the monumental success of the hit NBC sitcom.

But as the pair discussed their time on Friends, fans became more consumed with Jen's unexplained tat on her left wrist.

As Jen lifted her hand up at one point in the chat, fans noticed the tattoo read '11 11.'

Baffled by what the meaning behind the ink job could be, fans quickly began to speculate.

Gay couple pay £12,000 to fly their pet dogs from China because they miss them

A couple flew their pets 8,000 miles from China because they missed them so much.

Expats Scott Turner-Griffiths, 35, and husband Joshua, 29, paid £12,000 to be reunited with their two dogs and two cats.

After eight years in Beijing they flew home in December to have their son Ralph by a surrogate.

But when coronavirus struck their pet-care system broke down and they had to give up the animals or bring them home.

It took a journey of nine days via five countries but Scott, a buying director from Portsmouth, said: “It was worth the hassle. We are just so pleased our family is reunited again.”

"We've taken a massive hit in our savings but there's no amount we wouldn't pay to have our family back.

"Every day there would be cancellations and new changes, we kept going back and forth and it was becoming more and more difficult.

"It was such a nightmare to get them home, we even tried to get flight volunteers by offering to pay for people's tickets but Chinese restrictions meant people were scared to leave the country in case they couldn't get back in.

"When they got back for the first two days they were really out of it, I don't think they really slept over the whole journey.

"But now they are doing really well and they are coming back to life."

"Our pet travel agent came up with this final plan - however this must have been the ninth different plan as every time we tried something we would get knocked back.

"We are so excited to have them back and Ralph loves them all."

Three Oyo cabinet members test positive for COVID-19

Three members of the Oyo State Executive Council are have contracted COVID-19.

The state Governor, Seyi Makinde, made this known in a series of tweets on Wednesday.

The identity of the executive council members was, however, not disclosed.

Makinde explained that the three cases had been contacted, adding that contact tracing has started.

The governor wrote, “Earlier today, we received COVID-19 confirmation tests for all members of the Oyo State Executive Council.

“Sadly, three tests came back positive, and two were inconclusive so they will need to be retested. The exco members have been contacted and contact tracing has begun. Also, their offices have been closed and will be decontaminated.

“Let me reiterate that COVID-19 is still very much with us. That we are taking steps to re-open the economy does not mean that the virus has disappeared.

“We must each take actions to protect ourselves and our families. We must each own our actions and take preventive measures which include washing our hands with soap and water, wearing face masks whenever we are with other people, and maintaining proper social distancing from others.

“We also must not forget the various advisories the Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force has issued regarding what to eat to boost our immune systems.

“Sometimes, even after following all directives, we may still get the virus. When this happens, we need to have our bodies ready to fight this disease.

“We all join in prayer for our colleagues who have come down with the coronavirus and wish them a speedy recovery.

“Please, call the Emergency Operations Centre or visit a community-based testing centre near you if you have any symptom of COVID-19.”

Oluwo of Iwo faces dethronement over alleged criminal past

The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, is facing one of his toughest times on the throne as his subjects have not only turned against him but also demanded his immediate dethronement over various infractions.

In a letter to the Osun State Government dated June 17, 2020, the Association of Iwoland Indigenes in Diaspora through their lawyer, Peter Adeosun, raised a number of allegations against the monarch, calling for his removal for gross abuse of office.

They said Oba Akanbi’s character did not befit a person of his status and calibre as he always moved around with armed thugs, miscreants and hoodlums to harass, intimidate, molest and attack persons whom he perceives as enemies.

“Your Excellency, it is our brief as evidenced by various correspondences made available to us by our clients that Oluwo Abdulrasheed Akanbi has been conducting himself in manners which are antithetical to that of a monarch in any clime and very unbecoming of a Yoruba Oba.

“It is therefore disheartening to our clients that the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi (hereinafter referred to as Oba Akanbi), a Yoruba king who is supposed to be the custodian of Iwo culture and values has been misrepresenting the interest of Iwoland and this is becoming rather shameful,” the lawyer wrote to the state governor.

The Iwo indigenes also accused Oba Akanbi of being an ex-convict, who served time in United States jail for credit card fraud, drug trafficking among other criminal acts.

In a separate letter to the traditional ruler in response to the one received from the Iwo indigenes association, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Osun State, Oluwafemi Akande, asked Oba Akanbi to react to the allegations raised by his people before the next line of action was determined.

SaharaReporters gathered that the development has since sent the young and flamboyant monarch into panic especially after his style of leadership and mode of operation became a source of concern for some members of the public and indeed fellow traditional rulers across Yorubaland.

In documents seen by SaharaReporters on Wednesday, it emerged that indeed Oba Akanbi was deported from the US to Nigeria in 1999 after his conviction for aggravated felony – an offence that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 or both.

He was deported after using the name Segun Adewale Adeonigbagbe to enter the United States.

Oba Akanbi again tried to gain entry into America through Peace Bridge land crossing border from Canada but was arrested on March 11, 2011 after using the name Adewale Akanbi with June 21, 1967 as his date of birth.

He was subsequently held and committed to prison custody until December 19, 2011 when he was deported to Canada where he has a resident permit.

“On about March 11, 2011, in the Western District of New York, the defendant, Segun Adewale Adeonigbagbe aka Prince Adewale Akanbi, an alien who had previously been deported and removed from the United States on or about May 18, 1999, subsequent to a conviction for commission of an aggravated felony, did enter, attempt to enter and was voluntarily present and found in the United States without having first obtained the express consent of the Attorney-General of the United States or his successor, the Secretary for Homeland Security, to reapply for admission to the United States.

"All in violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326 (a) and 1326 (b) (2),” a document signed by William J. Honcho Jrn, former United States Attorney, read.

Novak Djokovic has said sorry for hosting a tennis tournament that spread coronavirus.

The men’s world number one, who took part in the event in Belgrade, tested positive for Covid-19, along with his fellow participants Grigor Dimitrov, Borna Coric and Viktor Troicki.

He wrote: “I am so deeply sorry our tournament has caused harm. Everything the organizers and I did the past month we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions.

“We believed the tournament met all health protocols and the health of our region seemed in good condition to finally unite people for philanthropic reasons.”

Djokovic added: “We were wrong, and it was too soon. I can’t express enough how sorry I am for this and every case of infection.”

He also requested that everyone who was present at the tournament get tested for coronavirus and practice social distancing.

Biggest global increase in coronavirus is recorded in one day with 183,000 cases in just 24 hours

The biggest global increase in coronavirus cases has been announced as 183,020 cases were recorded in just 24 hours by the World Health Organisation.

According to a daily report, the biggest increase in cases of the deadly bug came from North and South America with over 116,000 new cases.

This brings the world total to over 8.7 million with more than 461,000 deaths according to the WHO.

The previous record for worldwide cases was held at 181,232 on June 18, 2020.

Despite lockdown relaxing in some countries, last week officials warned the Covid-19 pandemic is still accelerating, reports Mirror Online.

"The world is in a new and dangerous phase," Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual briefing from WHO headquarters in Geneva.

"The virus is still spreading fast, it is still deadly, and most people are still susceptible.

"Tedros, whose leadership of the WHO has been severely criticised by U.S. President Donald Trump, urged people to maintain social distancing and "extreme vigilance."

As well as the Americas, a large number of new cases were coming from South Asia and the Middle East, Tedros added.
