Offa Poly Student Commits Suicide Over Handout Proceeds

The management and students of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa in Kwara State are in shock over the reported case of suicide by a student of the institution.

Punch correspondent gathered that a National Diploma 1 student of the Civil Engineering Department, Ridwan Ajiboye, reportedly drank some quantity of insecticide and eventually died.

Ajiboye, who was the son of a traditional title holder in Iragbiji in the Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State, decided to end his life after he was allegedly embarrassed by one of his lecturers, who gave him some handouts to sell to his course mates.

The Public Relations Officer, Students Union Government of the polytechnic, Olayinka Owolabi, when contacted by our correspondent on the telephone on Saturday, confirmed the incident but said nobody knew why the deceased killed himself.

He said, “Some of his neighbours heard his cry and rushed to his room where they met him gasping for air. He was taken to hospital but he eventually died.

“They said he took poisonous substance but we do not know what he took and nobody can say why he took the substance.”

He said the remains of the student had since been buried at his hometown, stating that his parents said they were not interested in investigating the circumstances that surrounded his death.

Some days after Ajiboye’s death, another ND student of the Estate Management Department, Maryam Fasasi, reportedly attempted suicide.

Fasasi was also said to have drunk a popular insecticide, sniper, but she was rescued and revived at a hospital.

She was said to have been taken to hospital where she was treated and was discharged on Saturday.

A student of the school told our correspondent that Maryam misplaced N45,000 which was the proceeds from handouts given to her to sell by one of her lecturers and she attempted to kill herself because of this.

The Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, Mr Olayinka Iroye, said he was aware of Ajiboye’s case, saying the management of the polytechnic took him to some hospitals “but he eventually died.”

He said nobody knew why he decided to take his life while stating that the deceased was a brilliant student as shown by his academic records.

He, however, said the management was not aware of the case of attempted suicide.

EFCC Raises Team To Quiz Amosun, Okorocha, Yari As Immunity Ends

Ahead of May 29, 2019, handover date to newly-elected states helmsmen, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has set up teams to probe some governors accused of perpetrating acts of corruption, Sunday Punch has learnt.

At least 12 states will have new governors on May 29 after the tenure of the current ones would have ended.

The states that will have new chief executives include  Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Imo, Kwara, Nasarawa, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Zamfara.

Of the 12 states, however, four governors have been accused of corruption.

They include Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State; Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed; the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari; and Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.

Okorocha, who has been suspended by the All Progressives Congress, has been accused of diverting over N1bn meant for the campaign of his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, who contested on the platform of the Action Alliance.

Jealous Wife Pours Hot Water On Female Neighbour For Greeting Her Husband

A 37-year-old woman, Mrs. Josephine, has been arrested in Lagos state for bathing her neighbour, one Mrs. Blessing Christopher, 33, with hot water for reportedly greeting her husband against her wish.

The jealous woman, Josephine had claimed that she was not ready to share her husband with Blessing and she meant it by pouring hot water on her.

Blessing, a worker with Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), incurred Josephine's wrath on Tuesday night at Agbotikuyo, Agege area of Lagos.

According to PM Express, Blessing explained that on Tuesday night, as she was preparing dinner for her family in the kitchen, her neighbour’s husband came into the place and greeted her. Immediately she replied, the man’s enraged wife reportedly jumped out.

Blessing said: “I responded to his greeting by saying, ‘Welcome Sir’.

The wife, who heard us, came out from their apartment and warned me never to greet her husband again. She said that if I tried it again, she would deal with me. I asked her when it has become a crime to respond to greetings and she said I should wait for her. I continued with my cooking.”

“A few minutes later, I saw her with a pot; she was hurriedly moving towards me. Her husband tried to block me but she went behind and poured the hot water on my back.”

Blessing, who was writhing in pain, was in bed when our correspondent went to speak with her. She said: “Since she poured the hot water on me, I have been in pains.

The worst situation is that my husband and I don’t have enough money to pay for my medical treatment. I don’t know what I did to that woman. We didn’t even have any issue. We are just four months old in the compound. We later heard that most tenants that had moved out of the compound left because of the woman’s troublesome nature.”

Blessing said since the incidence happened that she had not been able to take care of her twins; the twins are just two years old. Her husband was forced to stop going to work in order to mind the kids.

In January, Josephine was alleged to have broken a neighbour’s head during a squabble. The State Police PRO, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the story. He said that the suspect had been arrested.

Story Of Akara Seller's Son Who Defeated Millionaire To Win House of Assembly Election

Many people were shocked following the result of the Nnewi North Constituency of Anambra state in the just concluded State House of Assembly election held on March 9, 2019, as the son of akara (bean cake) vendor, Nonso Okafor, fondly called Smart who contested under the platform of APGA, trounced Obinna Ngonadi, son of Chief Humphrey Ngonadi, a multi-millionaire industrialist to emerge winner of the election.

According to Daily Sun, thirty eight year-old Nonso defeated Obinna, candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the industrial community; with a remarkable margin as he will now represent the four quarters of Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim and Nnewichi that make up Nnewi North Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly.

Recall that the people of the area had on February 23, voted massively for one of their own, oil and gas mogul, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah on the platform of YPP, to become senator of Anambra South.

Curiously, all the money and influence of other big shots in the area who rallied round the Ngonadis, could not save them from the giant killer called Nonso, who could barely fund his campaign.

Mother of the winner, Mrs Monica Okafor, a widow and an akara seller since 1999 when she lost her husband and began to fend for herself and their four children; two males and two females, said she was short of words to express what God had done for the family.

Radiating with smiles in the course of this interview, she said her heart was full of joy when she heard that her son won the election. Of course, before Nonso went in for the contest she said she called him to tell him that the battle would not be a child’s play. But he left her with the assurance that he would win the election; just like the case of David and Goliath in the Bible.

“I thank God who made this possible; that God who lifts up the poor from a refuse dump, I thank Him. God knows all we have suffered in this life and has decided to wipe our tears, I thank Him,” she said.

Mrs Okafor explained that her choice to go into akara business was circumstantial in the sense that when her husband died in 1999, she closed her own trading business at Nkwo Nnewi market and decided to do a home-based one to enable her properly take care of the home front, monitor when her children return from school and all that. And she has no regret over her choice because “with my akara business; I was able to take care of my children, feed them well, pay their school fees, clothe them properly and they never lagged behind in anything.”

Although the last born of the family, Nonso’s mother said that he showed very early in life that he would go places. According to her, his character disposition as he was growing up gave her an indication that he would be something else as he talked and reasoned like adults even as a small boy.

“I saw in him rare qualities and he has a different character disposition. Sometimes when he talks, I become shocked because he would exhibit wisdom that could not come from many adults. When my mother-in-law was still alive, I called her one day to tell her that this boy might be Ogbanje (one of the gods in Igbo ancient his- tory believed to have the capability to influence human actions).

But she said it was not true, and only told me that the boy is a special creature who would in due course show what he is created for. And I did not stop there. I consulted one Rev Father Odunukwe at Nnobi where I went for prayers, he told me that I should not panic, that God brought Nonso into the family to be a great man,” she narrated.

She noted that Nonso’s lifestyle, indeed all his siblings, is characterized by fear of God de- void of moral bankruptcy from their childhood to their present age unlike some youths of these days who have questionable rectitude. She said Nonso never engaged in any immoral or irresponsible behaviour that could dent the family record and had been a champion to anything that could bring succour to the youths; “I think that is what has endeared him to many.”

Mrs Okafor said the significance of Nonso’s victory in the State Assembly poll was to show that it is only God that crowns whoever He chooses and that money is deemphasised when it comes to God’s intervention.

I Will Ignore Oshiomhole & Work With PDP - APC Man Who Wants To Be Speaker

Some APC aspirants for the position of the Speaker in the House of Representatives have faulted the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, for declaring that the PDP would not get any leadership position or chairmanship of a major committee in the coming 9th National Assembly.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday, an APC lawmaker-elect from
Oyo State, who is one of the two speakership aspirants from the South-West, Olusegun Odebunmi, warned the leadership of the ruling party against dismissing the PDP lawmakers.

Odebunmi said, “Many people outside don’t know how things work in the National Assembly. Every member has a role and a stake when we are talking of the leadership. We (APC) are lucky to be the majority but we will still move ahead to lobby our members (in the opposition) towards our direction, otherwise we cannot have a peaceful house.”

Another APC lawmaker, who is one of the speakership aspirants from the North-East, told The Punch that while Oshiomhole was emphasising the quantity of those in the majority (APC), he had ignored the quality of those in the minority (PDP).
The ranking APC lawmaker said he would ignore Oshiomhole’s threats and work with those in the opposition if he became speaker.

Our problem is that the APC’s majority is about quantity, not quality. If you go to the floor of the House – go and observe this, it is the PDP people who are always attending plenary; some of our people will just come and sign, and go away to attend to their private businesses,” he said.

No fewer than 17 members of the House are contesting leadership positions in the coming 9th NASS.

Saraki, David Mark, Akpabio, Others To Get N1.3Billion

Senate President Bukola Saraki and 216 lawmakers not re-elected in the National Assembly elections are to receive severance allowances amounting to N1.3bn, investigation has shown.

Other prominent lawmakers that would be entitled to the severance package are a former Senate President, David Mark; a former Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio; and an entertainment entrepreneur, Senator Ben Murray Bruce, as well as Senator Binta Garuba.

Others are former governors – Rabiu Kwankwaso, George Akume, Ahmed Yerima, Abiodun Olujimi as well as Senators Shehu Sani, Andy Ubah and Mao Ohuabunwa.

A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Barnabas Gemade, and the 2019 APC governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Sonny Ogbuorji, are also on the list.

Some of the lawmakers did not seek re-election; some lost the nomination of their parties while some lost the National Assembly elections.

According to a document, Remuneration Package for Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders 2008, a non-returning senator is entitled to a severance allowance of N6,079,200. The severance allowance of a Senate President is N7,452,727.50.

On the other hand, a non-returning member of the House of Representatives is entitled to N5,955,637.5.

There are 66 senators and 151 Reps who will not be returning to the red and green chambers, respectively in the 9th National Assembly expected to be inaugurated on June 6.

According to The Punch, this means that the 66 non-retuning senators will be paid a total of N401,227,200 as a farewell package. Similarly, the 151 Reps will be paid a total of N899,301,262.5 to bid farewell to the National Assembly where they had worked, at least, in the last four years.

We'll Resist Zoning of Speaker To South-West — APC group

The North-Central APC Young Patriots, a coalition of youth groups of the party in the geopolitical zone, has vowed to resist zoning of the Speaker of the House of Reps to the South-West.

Some members of the All Progressives Congress who want to be Speaker of the House have also called on the ruling party to lobby lawmakers in the PDP instead of moving against them.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Saturday at the Stone Edge Hotel, Abuja, the Convener, APC Young Patriots, Mr Dominic Alancha, said though the party had yet to officially announce the zoning to the South-West, it should not do so to avoid opposition to the party’s candidate like in 2015.

Alancha said, “If the party goes ahead to zone the position of the Speaker to the South-West because it wants to foist a particular candidate on lawmakers, disregarding popular support and equitable zoning formula, it will thereby be short changing the North-Central of its hard-earned right which will be resisted by this group.

“One would expect that since the Senate presidency was zoned to the North-East, being the zone that contributed the highest number of votes after the North-West, the speakership position will naturally go to the next in line – the North-Central zone – which produced the second largest votes after the North-East (2,465,599).

“So, why is the party suddenly shifting the goal post when it comes to zoning the speakership position by considering the South-West that performed less than the North-Central and even already has the number two position of a Vice President? ls this an equitable thing to do?”

Meanwhile, House of Reps-elect from the six states in South-West rose from a closed-door meeting in Ibadan on Friday and pledged to support the party’s decision on the House leadership structure.

Led by their National Coordinator, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo from Ondo State, alongside their South-West Coordinator, Musliudeen Akinremi, the elected representatives, who converged on Ibadan Business School, Bodija for the meeting, said the zone deserved the speakership position.

They said they had no objection to the party’s position on selection of the house leadership.

Akinremi said, “We had a fruitful deliberation during the meeting, which lasted for over three hours.

“We all agreed to abide by the consensus arrangement of the party in choosing the house leadership. We pledged to protect the interest of the party, especially on the need to make the APC stronger ahead of the 2023, in Yorubaland.”

Wike To INEC: Don’t Allow Military in Collation of Results

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure the military is not part of the collation of the governorship and legislative election results.

Wike, who made the call in Port Harcourt on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the commission, insisted that the Army was responsible for the violence, which erupted in some areas during the March 9 governorship and House of Assembly polls.

The governor said that the violence led to the March 10, 2019 suspension of the electoral process.

“The only way you can have peaceful election is when soldiers are not made part of it. Let the Army remove their hands from elections. When soldiers go to the collation room, people will resist them and they will shoot the people. That was how violence came about. Was there violence at the polling units?”

Describing Rivers as the most peaceful state in the country, the governor disagreed with claims in some quarters that the state was violent.

INEC had said that the collation of election result would be carried out between April 2 and 5, 2019.

Mystery! Woman Allegedly Kills Son, Self In Ayobo

A teacher whose husband resides abroad yesterday, March 30th allegedly took her own life with that of her son. The middle-aged woman who residents of Ayobo, Ipaja say was financially stable, allegedly killed her 3-year old son first, before committing suicide.

Neighbours found both mom and son dead at their No 1, Adeniran Street, off Ferguson Osagie Road, Ayobo, Ipaja before alerting the police.
.
According to reports, when men from the Ayobo Police Station arrived, they said they are not ruling out possible double homicide as the deceased and her son were found foaming from the mouth.
The police were however not allowed to evacuate the corpses,  as it was a norm in Ayobo that when mysterious deaths like this happens, the Oro cult is always consulted to find out the cause of death and to ward off further deaths. So sad!

Tinubu: We Won't Allow Saraki Type of Emergence This Time

One of APC national leaders, Bola Tinubu, has declared that the party is in no mood to allow those he termed as 'serpent' infiltrate its ranks and hijack the leadership of the 9th National Assembly.

Speaking in Lagos, he said “We were a little careless in 2015. We created the opportunity for serpent to get into our party and that did not allow Nigeria to make the desired progress.

“You have seen the result of it and we are not going to allow that to happen again. We are going to respect our party and we are going to apply the rules and regulations.

“It is either you stay with us or you follow us or you leave. You have the freedom to choose but the freedom does not give you as a minority to go and collaborate and protrude our mandate given to you to another party who was our opposition and who is still our opposition.

“We would not take that this time, no matter who you think you are."

Crisis Looms As Acting CJN's Tenure Ends In 3 Weeks?

The nation may be plunged into a constitutional crisis in about three weeks as the tenure of the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammad Tanko, comes to an end.

Tanko was inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari on January 25, 2019 following an order by the Code of Conduct Tribunal that the substantive CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, be suspended and the next in line of seniority, be sworn in.

The constitution states that the President cannot
re-appoint an acting CJN unless on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council. Onnoghen and Tanko are facing a probe by NJC, the body responsible for the discipline and appointment of judges.

While Onnoghen was given a query by the NJC to respond to allegations on why he failed to declare some of his assets as required by law, the acting CJN was asked to respond to a query on why he allowed himself to be sworn in by Buhari without the recommendation of the NJC as stipulated by law.

Onnoghen has challenged his suspension before the Court of Appeal but the court has withheld judgment for unknown reasons while the case before the CCT has been given an accelerated hearing.

Buhari will only be able to extend Justice Tanko’s tenure if the NJC sends his name to the President for confirmation. He will subsequently be expected to send his name to the Senate for confirmation.

However, the Senate led by Senate President Bukola Saraki, is at loggerheads with the executive.

The upper chamber of the National Assembly harshly criticised Buhari for suspending Onnoghen and had even threatened to drag the executive arm of government to the Supreme Court.

Reliable sources in the Presidency feared that if Buhari nominates Muhammad as the CJN to the Senate, the current set of lawmakers would likely reject his nomination.

Speaking with The Punch, however, Chief Robert Clarke (SAN) said it was too early to speculate as the NJC still have three weeks.

Clarke said the constitution is clear that the appointment of judges should be on the basis of seniority and since Onnoghen remained under suspension, the NJC would have to extend the tenure of Justice Tanko, who is also being probed by the council.

He said, “The Constitution will not allow a vacuum in any instance. It says the most senior judge will take over as acting CJN. After three months, the NJC can recommend another three months. He has no definitive tenure. It only said if the position is not vacant, the most senior must act.

“The NJC can recommend Tanko again. I know the NJC will do the right thing. They know more than you and I, they know what to do. The constitution says the most senior. So, the NJC cannot recommend just anyone. Let’s not speculate.”

EFCC In Big Move Against Okorocha, Amosun, Others

Ahead of May 29, 2019, handover date to newly-elected states helmsmen, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has set up teams to probe some governors accused of perpetrating acts of corruption.

At least 12 states will have new governors on May 29 after the tenure of the current ones would have ended. Of the 12 states, however, four governors have been accused of corruption.

The states that will have new chief executives include Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Imo, Kwara, Nasarawa, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Zamfara.

The four governors include Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo; Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed; Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari; and Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.

Okorocha, who has been suspended by the APC, has been accused of diverting over N1billion meant for the campaign of his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, who contested on the platform of the Action Alliance.

The EFCC said in an interim report that it had arrested the Accountant-General of Imo State, Uzoho Casmir, for allegedly helping Okorocha to launder N1.05bn for the governorship and state House of Assembly elections.

In Zamfara, the EFCC is investigating Yari for alleged diversion of funds running into billions of naira.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had, in 2017, ordered an interim forfeiture of the sums of N500m and $500,000 said to have been looted from the Paris Club refunds made by the Federal Government in favour of the 36 states of the federation.

The Punch gathered that the sums of money, said to have been recovered from two firms, First Generation Mortgage Bank Limited, and Gosh Projects Limited, were allegedly linked to Yari.

The EFCC alleged that the sums of money were fraudulently diverted from the NGF’s bank account on the instruction of Yari. According to the commission, about N500m from the money was diverted to offset Yari’s personal loan obtained from the First Generation Mortgage Bank Limited.

Ahmed of Kwara State, will also be invited by the EFCC once his tenure comes to an end.

His successor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, has also vowed to probe the governor once he loses his immunity.

Ahmed, who is the godson to Senate President Bukola Saraki, was accused of diverting state funds.

Earlier in the month, the EFCC arrested six commissioners and government officials in Kwara State for allegedly diverting N1bn a week before the National Assembly and presidential elections.

The EFCC said in a situation report that bank officials had been brought in for questioning and had made relevant statements.

Amosun, who has been suspended by the APC, has also come under probe by the commission.

The probe was sequel to a petition written by a group, Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate, over an alleged misappropriation of N4bn Anchor Borrowers’ Fund meant for Ogun farmers.

The group, in the petition dated February 20, 2019, alleged that the sum was made available to the Amosun-led government in 2017 by the Central Bank of Nigeria to provide jobs for the residents through the mass production of rice.

It alleged that Amosun staged a jamboree ceremony and set up fake rice pyramids to deceive the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, when he (Emefiele) visited the state last year.

The group further accused the governor of abandoning the project in spite of his promise to establish rice plantations in the three senatorial districts of the state.

The EFCC may, however, have to wait till 2023 before taking further action on five governors-elect – Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State; Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State; Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State and his Akwa Ibom State counterpart, Udom Emmanuel, as well as Kano Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, who are all being investigated for alleged diversion of public funds.

Should Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, win re-election in April, the EFCC will also have to wait till 2023 before taking any action against him.

A panel constituted to investigate the electoral and other offences perpetrated during the December 10, 2016 Rivers parliamentary re-run said that it recovered N111m from 23 INEC officials.

The Chairman of the panel, Damian Okoro, alleged that three senior electoral officers collected N20m each out of the N360m given to them by Governor Wike, while the remaining officers received N15m each.

When contacted on phone, the spokesman for the EFCC, Tony Orilade, said all the corruption allegations would be treated on a “case-by-case” basis.

Orilade said, “I don’t have the full details of the cases but investigations have been going on as regards some of these cases and as soon as their immunity is gone, we will take further action and if there is a prima facie case, we will take the matter to court.

“As for those who have won and are going to be covered by immunity, it does not mean that investigations will stop. They are not immune from investigation but from prosecution as guaranteed by the constitution. And at the proper time, if there is a prima facie case, they will be prosecuted.”

13 APC Senators To Work With Saraki For Senate President Over Oshiomhole's 'Careless Talk'

The manner APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole has been warning Senators like schoolboys in his classroom, some APC senators are said to be angry and ready to work with the PDP and Bukola Saraki to ensure one of them emerge as Senate President with PDP as Deputy.

After Bola Tinubu, APC national leader was reportedly said anyone not happy with the decision should leave the party, the situation have become worse. The battle has started...

The PDP has launched an audacious move to win to its side 13 aggrieved APC Senators-elect as part of a grand design to hijack the leadership of the 9th Senate.

But the alleged plot has leaked to the APC which has launched a counter move of its own to avoid a repeat of the 2015 infiltration of its ranks in the National Assembly by the PDP.

The APC is in talks with governors and national leaders to support President Buhari’s choices for the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan and the Speaker of the House who may be named this week.

According to The Nation, APC is determined to ensure that none of its members contests against APC’s official candidates for leadership positions in the Senate and the House of Reps in June.

Another option is a likely waive of the Standing Rules of the two chambers to allow open voting during the election of principal officers to monitor the loyalty of the party’s Senators-elect.

After Oshiomhole said no PDP member will get to head any committee, the APC is now discussing with some PDP Senators-elect with a view to giving them the chairmanship of juicy committees.

But PDP leaders are targeting 13 Senators-elect from APC, to be in charge of the Senate as it is now.

If the PDP’s plan sails through it will have on its side about 56 votes for a majority decision leaving APC with 53.

The PDP targets are Senators-elect from Borno, Oyo, Gombe, Bayelsa, Bauchi and Ogun states.

The Standing Rules do not expressly state that presiding officers must come from the ruling party.

Investigation by The Nation revealed that APC and PDP have been trying to outwit each other on the election of the new Senate President, Speaker and other officers.

While the APC leadership and Ahmed Lawan have been engaging Senators-elect on one-on-one talks, the PDP has been trying to mount pressure on most Senators-elect to resist what it has termed “imposition of principal officers” by the Executive.

Sources said PDP’s agenda is to share power with the APC in the two chambers.

A top source in APC, who spoke in confidence, said: “The race is still open despite the fact that APC has made its position known and released its zoning formula for the Senate. We are expecting the party’s idea of power sharing in the House this week. What we are trying to do is to keep our caucus united in the two chambers.

“But not all Senators-elect and House members-elect have bought into the party’s zoning formula. This is why we have sought the assistance of APC governors and national leaders to engage the new National Assembly members to avoid a repeat of 2015 episode which was plotted and sealed by the opposition.

“Our main target is to assert our right as the party with the majority in the National Assembly to produce the new set of leaders.
“We have already asked the nominee for Senate Presidency, Dr. Ahmad Lawan and some Senators-elect to meet with all Senators-elect on why APC must forge a common front. To us, delivering democratic dividends is more important than the sentiments being whipped up by the opposition.”

Asked if the APC could regain the control of the two chambers, the source added: “We want to speak with one voice this time around; we plan to present common candidates for all offices due to APC without counter-nominations; and we are also negotiating with PDP Senators-elect and House members-elect.

“We will not underrate the opposition but we won’t let them have their way like the case in 2015. We are hopeful of getting the figures from APC and PDP members before the inauguration of the 9th Senate."

A ranking Senator in PDP said: “We are really opposed to any plot to foist leaders on the two chambers. Our fears border on a possible rubber-stamp legislature.”

Tinubu, Aregbesola Facing Serious Heat Over Sanwo-Olu?

A crisis is brewing in the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress over the role the former Osun State Governor, Mr Rauf Aregebsola, is playing in the compilation of names of political appointees that will form the cabinet of the Governor-elect, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The crisis, according to sources, is between two main groups within the APC in the state - the Mandate Group and the Governor’s Advisory Council.

Sources disclosed that National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had delegated Aregbesola to put together the list of politicians who would work with Sanwo-Olu.

The Punch learnt that the former Osun State governor had, as a first step, asked Sanwo-Olu to disband his campaign team and await the list of members of the transition committee.

The Director-General of Sanwo-Olu Campaign Team, Mr Tayo Ayinde, was said to have immediately complied with the directive on behalf of the governor-elect. The transition committee will interface with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s transition team.

Sanwo-Olu will be inaugurated as Lagos State Governor on May 29. Aregbesola has reportedly compiled 40 names of those that would be the new governor’s aides from the Mandate Group alone.

Members of the GAC are said to be displeased with this development and had reportedly challenged the former Osun State governor.

The GAC, sources said, directed a leader of the party, Mr Tajudeen Olusi, to compile another list which would accommodate the aggrieved members of the group who they claimed played the lead role in the emergence of Sanwo-Olu.

Another source within the GAC feared that the group might be the victims of the power play if the former governor was not challenged.

The source said, “Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) has directed Aregbesola to take control of the party in Lagos because he is now in Abuja.

“So, Aregbesola, who was in Osun State, has now returned to Lagos and has compiled the list of Sanwo-Olu’s cabinet members without considering the role played by the GAC before Ambode was stopped. We will not allow this to go unchallenged. We have to do something about it and the time to act is now.”

The Media Adviser to the former Osun State Governor, Mr Sola Fasure, when contacted on phone by The Punch on Friday, said he would get in touch with his principal and give his reaction to the allegations.

Fasure, when contacted again on Saturday, said Aregbesola had yet to respond to the inquiry. He promised to remind him and get back but he had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

But the Publicity Secretary of Lagos chapter of the APC, Joe Igbokwe, when contacted, neither confirmed nor denied the development.

He said, “I do not know about that; those are speculations. But you know that our National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is stepping aside from Lagos to higher level and he needs someone; naturally, it can be anyone. There are people who are around him and could hold position of trust for him; so, he will need to delegate some duties. People are just speculating for now.”
