The FBI is warning the public about a nationwide scam involving perpetrators impersonating its agents, according to information released by the agency.
In targeting unsuspecting victims, the fraudulent caller uses technology to "spoof" the phone number from an actual FBI field office, so victims believe the inbound call is coming from federal law enforcement.
The agency indicated scammers have mimicked telephone numbers belonging to FBI field offices in California, Montana, Colorado, Texas, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and Kentucky.
Once connected with a targeted victim, scammers indicate that a warrant of arrest exists for the person, which will be dismissed by a federal court in exchange for immediate payment. To increase the appearance of authenticity of the scam, perpetrators have conducted research on their victims including their names and information about their background.
In another variation of the scam, the agency said victims may also be told:
- Their Social Security number has been compromised and linked to money laundering.
- Their Social Security number has been used to open bank accounts and that the government would seize those accounts.
- To protect their money, funds should be transferred to accounts specifically set up by the government, which would be protected until the situation is resolved, at which point the money would then be returned.
- Failure to transfer money could lead to loss of funds and possible arrest.
World karate, continental and SA boxing female champion Leighandre Jegels has been shot and killed on Friday, allegedly by her police officer boyfriend, whom she had a protection order against.
Jegels’ mother, who was also shot in the attack, was rushed to an East London hospital.
A 37-year-old police Tactical Response Team officer was later arrested about 15km from Peddie after the hired white Mercedes-Benz he had been driving was involved in an accident. One person was killed in the accident while four others were injured, the police confirmed Friday afternoon.
Jegels’s father, Anslin, who was at the scene in Voortrekker Road near Da Gama textile shops, was too distraught to speak to the media. Makhanda police cluster spokesperson Captain Mali Govender confirmed the arrest.
When the WBA Pan-African junior-bantamweight boxing champ was shot dead, she had been travelling in her Volkswagen GTI with her mother to a gym session at Zolani Tete’s All Winners Boxing Club in Mdantsane’s NU1.
She had been training for her ring return against Siphosethu Nxazonke in a junior-bantamweight non-title clash in Mthatha on October 2.
East London police spokesperson Captain Hazel Mqala confirmed the two were flagged down by the suspect who was already standing on the Da Gama turn-off.
Jegels and the accused lived together in Cove Rock until the boxer obtained a protection order against him, sources said.
“She did report allegations of domestic violence against the suspect.
“The guy was standing near the Da Gama textile factory turn-off. She noticed him and got out of the car to talk to him but he pulled out a gun and shot her in the face three times, and proceeded by shooting the mother,” a source said.
Damilola Adegbite's son is 5 today. To celebrate him, she took to Instagram to express her excitement while also recounting how he was separated from her on two occasions. She wrote:
''MY BABY IS 5!!! It seems just like yesterday. At “chuck e cheese” with some friends. Feeling so restless and uncomfortable. Not knowing you were much closer than we expected. The unbearable pain birthing you. Those seconds we couldn’t hear your heart beat. The nurses tried to stay calm but I could tell they were worried. And then all of a sudden, the little thump thump of your heart filling the hospital room.
''Separated from you for days while you were in the ICU. Separated from you again during one of the most trying times of my life.... Truth is, maybe we didn’t get off on the greatest of starts. Motherhood is a journey. A learning process.
''It’s been 5 years and I don’t have it all figured out yet. But I promise to love and protect you. To fight for you, to be your pillar of strength and support. To walk closely by your side every single day. To bring you up in the way and doctrines of the Lord. You will grow up to be a fine man. You will be a bright light in your generation. A king amongst men. I decree and declare God’s blessings and favor on you every single day of your life. Mummy loves you so so much Brian. Happy birthday to you my Son
Actress and singer, Jenifer Eliogu, has advised young ones in the movie industry that the only way they can be relevant in the industry is to harness their talents.
Sharing her thoughts on actresses that often flaunt their bodies, the entertainer told Saturday Beats, “Exceptional talent, (not nudity) is what guarantees one’s relevance in this industry; we all come to that realisation over time.”
The actress also maintained that she has never entertained the thought of quitting movies for music. She stated, “Firstly, it has been a good year so far. I shot my third movie written and produced by me. I have also been on many other productions, with lovely scripts, wonderful crew and good fees. I cannot complain. And things keep getting better.
“As for those who think I have or may want to quit acting for music, it untrue. I have had my band for seven years, and we do all kinds of events. I have never thought of quitting acting. I find fulfillment in both acting and singing. I also compere events and still run my NGO which I started 10 years ago. Ultimately, I create enough time for my family. Passion is what I thrive on.”
Although her marriage has being the subject of many salacious reports with some insinuating that she was ‘chased out of her matrimonial home’, the singer said she has found that silence is golden. She added, “Silence is all I have to offer on that particular issue. I react when it is absolutely necessary but most of the time, I just decide not to dignify them. As much as I am a public figure by virtue of my career, I keep my private life private. I don’t need validation from anyone. I avoid distractions as much as possible.”

Twitter CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey’s account was hacked Friday, demonstrating the potential vulnerabilities of even the most high-profile social media accounts.
Starting Friday afternoon, Dorsey’s @jack account began unleashing a stream of more than a dozen tweets and retweets, including obscenities, shout-outs, threats and racial slurs. The tweets remained on the account, which has 4.2 million followers, for less than an hour before Twitter removed them.
“Intel is there’s a bomb at Twitter HQ,” read one of the tweets. “Shoutout to Ron and Kyle,” another said. Many of the tweets were tagged with #ChucklingHella.
The company said in a tweet Friday evening that the phone number associated with Dorsey’s account “was compromised due to a security oversight by the mobile provider.” The hacker was then able to use the phone number to compose and send tweets via text message using the platform’s tweet-via-SMS feature.
Twitter said the issue has been resolved, and that there is no indication their systems were compromised.
Almost two million people in the Indian state of Assam, in the north east, were left facing statelessness on Saturday after the state published a citizenship list aimed at weeding out “foreign infiltrators”.
A total of 31.1 million people were included in a National Register of Citizens (NRC), but 1.9 million were deemed ineligible, according to the Assam government. A large chunk of those excluded were expected to be Muslims.
Assam has long seen large influxes from elsewhere, including under British colonial rule and around Bangladesh’s 1971 war of independence when millions fled into India.
For decades this has made Assam a hotbed of inter-religious and ethnic tensions, adding to pressure for a lasting solution. Sporadic violence has included the 1983 massacre of around 2,000 people.
Security was beefed up in Assam ahead of the release of the NRC, with some 20,000 extra personnel brought in and gatherings banned in some locations.
Only those who can demonstrate that they or their forebears were in India before 1971 could be included in the list.
But navigating the complex process is a huge challenge for many in a region of high illiteracy where many lack documentation.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party runs Assam — and critics say the NRC process reflects the BJP’s goal to serve only its co-religionists.

Fast rising actress and ofcus very curvy, Amara Maduka has revealed what she uses in helping her curves when a man is not around. Stating it’s a must have for women and not necessarily a replacement for men, Amara says the adult toys are usually meant for EMERGENCY situations and again, in a situation where a woman decides she does not want to be in a relationship.
Speaking to Saturday Beats and explaining her points, the actress said;
“The controversy surrounding intimacy gadgets is really unnecessary to me. Men act like the toys are going to replace them but I don’t think it would. Eventually, a woman will need the warmth of a man and the toys won’t provide that. Toys are basically for emergency situations. When the human isn’t available and a girl has to help herself, an intimacy gadget comes in handy.
“It can also be useful when you just want to stay of relationships and put your life together. I will advise women to use intimacy gadgets. Instead of having to sleep with different men for satisfaction, you can give yourself same and in most cases, better orgasm.”
The actress also added that relocating to Lagos remains one of her best decisions. “Relocating to Lagos remains the best decision I’ve made for my career and it’s paying off,” she said.

A married former British soldier, David Reed has been arrested in Dubai on suspicion of stabbing to dearh an unidentified Nigerian woman
Reed, 46, has been held in jail for almost a month without charge after the woman suffered a fatal wound in a violent struggle, Mail Online reported.
The former army medic, from Bristol, has admitted he booked a massage with the Nigerian, who police described as an escort worker, euphemism for a prostitute.
The father-of-four has claimed that three men burst into the room where he was having the massage and attacked him.
He has told police that he acted in self-defence and the woman was fatally stabbed during a fierce struggle on August 4.
Investigators in Dubai believe he was the victim of a ‘shake-down’, with the gang demanding money or threatening to blackmail him.
‘It is common for prostitutes to work with other people to try and extort money from their clients because prostitution and sex outside marriage is illegal in the country,’ said a Dubai Police source.
‘From what we understand the suspect said he was acting in self-defence. The matter is still under investigation.’
Reed, who works in Iraq for the Group 4 security firm recruiting paramedics to work in hostile environments, told police he had booked a massage during a 12-hour stop over in Dubai.

The holding charge on the UAE court website reads: ‘Habitual practice of immorality or prostitution.’
Two other people who involved in the fight have also been arrested, it is claimed.
R. Kelly is locked up right now with no signs of him being released any time soon. The singer's been locked up in solitary confinement out of fear that he'll be harmed in Gen. Pop. The singer admitted he was happy about being separated from the other inmates out of fear that some of them might retaliate against him. That was in July and a lot has changed since including his stance on being in solitary.
It looks like R. Kelly's lost all fear of being placed in gen. pop. According to TMZ, the singer is begging the judge to release him from solitary confinement and allow him to join the rest of the inmates in general population in jail. Now, given that he's an accused preying on young girls and a celebrity at that, general population makes him an immediate target. However, he's reportedly willing to take the chance because solitary is taking a toll on his mental and physical health.
Steven Greenberg, Kells lawyer, listed off a bunch of reasons why Kells should be released from solitary -- the main one being that solitary is meant to punish inmates. Greenberg argued that Kelly is locked up without human interaction, access to sunlight and media, recreational activities or even private one-on-one visitations that aren't under surveillance.

A genetic analysis of almost half a million people has concluded there is no single "gay gene".
The study, published in Science, used data from the UK Biobank and 23andMe, and found some genetic variants associated with same-sex relationships.
But genetic factors accounted for, at most, 25% of same-sex behaviour.
Advocacy group GLAAD said the study confirmed "no conclusive degree to which nature or nurture influenced how a gay or lesbian person behaves."
The researchers scanned the genomes - the entire genetic make-up - of 409,000 people signed up to the UK Biobank project, and 68,500 registered with the genetics company 23andMe.
Participants were also asked whether they had same-sex partners exclusively, or as well as opposite-sex partners.
The Harvard and MIT researchers concluded genetics could account for between 8-25% of same-sex behaviour across the population, when the whole genome is considered.
Five specific genetic variants were found to be particularly associated with same-sex behaviour, including one linked to the biological pathway for smell, and others to those for sex hormones.
But together they only accounted for under 1% of same-sex behaviour.
