Ex Lagos Speaker, Ikuforiji bags Ph.D, LLB

The former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji is back on the radar with a bang! He’s back with two major accomplishments; He just completed his Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Leadership at the Liverpool Business School, John Moores University, Liverpool, England.

He was also called to Bar on Wednesday in Abuja, having passed the one year Law School examination.

Apparently with his eyes set for the future, Ikuforiji, who is the longest serving speaker in the history of the State law making body, went back to school to, according to him, seek more knowledge on leadership and management. “The doctorate took me over five years to complete due to the exigencies of my former office and the nature of my research,” he said.

Melaye crushed in Kogi West rerun, Senate seat gone

There appears to be no redemption, no comeback for Senator Dino Melaye in Kogi West district rerun as he has been electorally sacked by his opponent, Senator Smart Adeyemi.

The opponent that Melaye once characterised as his ‘political wife’ continued with his winning momentum as many results from the 53 polling units streamed in.

PDP won only in 2 units, while Adeyemi won in 24, out of the units, where results were declared.

Melaye, however, in a tweet, described the results as ‘magic figures’, claiming that he has been the preferred candidate of voters.

Why I won’t get married or have kids – Nollywood actor

Nollywood actor and film maker, Olu Michaels, 48, is one of the movie entrepreneurs who invested so much without getting the desired reward. He has worked with many  big names in the Nigerian movie industry, including Funke Akindele on Jenifa’s Diary for two years. The travel agent-cum-producer, in this no-hold-barred interview with Olaitan Ganiu revealed why he wants to remain single, and even childless, how his multi-million naira investment on movie project went down the drain, among others. Excerpts:

IT seems you’re a jack of all trade. What aspect of entertainment are you venturing into now?

I’m focusing on movie production because I’m looking into changing the narrative where this cartel has been in the industry for a while. I don’t like the idea where each time I switch on my television, there are certain people who do a so-called English movie. Also, as a producer, each time I said I want to produce a movie, I was told: ‘If this or that person are not going to be in the movie, we won’t buy it.’

I have actually produced a movie, gave it to a marketer and they refused it simply because the director is a Yoruba man or he is not part of their caucus. So, why is that? As long as the storyline is good, why do I have to bring your clique into my production? In the next two years, I’m looking into changing the narrative.

Are you married?

I’m not married, and I don’t intend to. Truth be told, I’m scared of marriage and I don’t think I will ever get married. Though, I wanted to have kids when I was younger but not now, it is too late. Why I said it’s too late for having children is that I am a workaholic and I don’t  like a situation where I would want to sleep and then a baby starts crying. My parents have been begging me to get married but no.

What do you look out for in a woman?

I am a jealous man. For example, if I marry an actress and I see her kissing another actor on set, I will never tolerate such. Also, if I marry a beautiful woman, I might never concentrate on my work because I will be on the look to protect her.

How do you feel being lonely at night?

What I do every time I feel lonely is that I have a car that I bought with all my money. It is a Mercedes-Benz and the interior is wow. I love it. I just drive round town and get home and sleep off.

Things getting out of hand, Aisha Buhari warns Governors

The President’s wife, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has slammed state governors for failing to provide basic social amenities and infrastructure, noting that things were getting out of hand.

The wife of the President spoke at the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs General Assembly and National Executive Council Meeting held at the National Mosque in Abuja on Friday.

She said, “We should either fasten our seatbelt or do the needful or we will all regret it very soon because, at the rate things are going, things are getting completely out of hand. The VP (Yemi Osinbajo) is here, some ministers are here, they are supposed to do justice to the situation.

“People cannot afford potable water in this country while we have governors. Since this is the highest decision-making body of Islamic affairs, for those that are listening, we should fear God, and we should know that one day, we will return to God and account for our deeds here on earth.”

Mrs Buhari also called for the regulation of social media, noting that China with about 1.3 billion people had done so, stressing that many people could not relax in their villages due to insecurity.

“On this issue of social media, you cannot just sit in the comfort of your house and tweet that the Vice President has resigned. It is a serious issue. If China can control over 1.3 billion people on social media, I see no reason why Nigeria cannot attempt controlling only 180 million people,” she added.

Young doctor r.a.p.e.d, murdered and her body set on fire in India (photo)

The body of a woman has been found after she was allegedly r.a.p.e.d and murdered in Hyderabad, India.

The victim, a 27-year-old veterinary doctor, was reportedly found in an underpass in the outskirts of the city by a passer-by.

Police have reportedly detained at least two people, who they suspect offered to help the woman fix a flat tyre on her motorbike but instead drove her to a secluded spot and killed her.

The veterinarian’s remains were reportedly so badly burnt that her family could only identify her from a locket she was wearing. Her identity has not been revealed for legal reasons.

“My daughter was very innocent,” the victim’s mother told the Times of India. “I want the accused burned alive.”

The victim’s sister reported her missing on Tuesday night, after receiving a distressing phone call after a tyre was punctured on the victim’s motorbike.

New Delhi TV reported that the victim asked her sister to remain on the phone with her as there were many unknown men in the area and she was “scared”.

During the call, it appeared someone had offered help and the victim told her sister she would call her again soon but that was the last time they spoke.
Her body was found on Thursday morning, but police are still searching for her vehicle.

Mother claims her ultrasound photo shows her late father kissing her unborn daughter

A Californian woman claims her ultrasound picture shows her late father kissing her unborn daughter.

Shantel Carrillo, 30, from Santee, posted the 20-week ultrasound to social media and friends were quick to notice something unusual.

'Right when I posted it, like 30 seconds later, someone was like, 'There's an angel kissing your baby,' Shantel told NBC San Diego.

Shantel believes her late father, Chuck, who passed away in 2016, can be seen kissing her daughter in the womb.

It shows a figure in the top left corner which Shantel believes resembles her father.

'It has his nose, his little chubby cheeks, his little double chin, and my dad wore a hat like all the time. It looks like the bill of his hat and his lips are just touching hers so perfectly,' Shantel told ABC10.

The scan was posted alongside a picture of her father holding her first daughter Myree.

And Shantel said her father would be 'over the moon' to be now be part of her second daughter's life.

While she added it could be that her placenta looks like her father she is overjoyed at the special picture.

Her daughter is due in April which is also the same month her father was born.

Suriname President Bouterse convicted of murder

A court in Suriname on Friday convicted President Desi Bouterse of murder for the execution of 15 opponents in 1982 following a coup to seize power, sentencing the man who has dominated the former Dutch colony’s recent history to 20 years in prison.

Opposition parties called for Bouterse, currently in China on an official visit, to step down. The military court that found him guilty has not yet ordered his arrest.

Bouterse led the South American country through the 1980s as head of a military government, then assumed office again in 2010 and secured re-election five years later.

The court ruled that Bouterse had overseen an operation in which soldiers under his command abducted 16 leading government critics - including lawyers, journalists and university teachers - from their homes and killed 15 of them at a colonial fortress in the capital Paramaribo.

One trade union leader survived and later gave testimony against Bouterse.

Bouterse, who has steadfastly denied the charges, is able to appeal the decision. So far he has made no comment on his conviction and he is expected to travel to Cuba, as planned, on Saturday.

In a statement, the Surinamese government said it had “taken note of the developments and calls on the community to keep the peace.”

Ex-banker, Fadayomi, jailed six years for stealing N11m

Justice Mohammed Owolabi of the Oyo State High Court on Friday sentenced a former staff of the Ayete Microfinance Bank Limited, situated in Ayete, Oyo State, Sunday Fadayomi to six years imprisonment without an option of fine.

Pronouncing Fadayomi guilty of all the 30 count criminal charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, Justice Owolabi sentenced him to jail for stealing N11 million from the bank’s vault while he was a staff of the bank.

The convict is an information system expert in charge of the bank’s information technology section, the position he held for about 10 years before his criminal exploits were blown open.

The bank, in a petition dated April 17, 2018, had accused him of sundry criminal activities, including posting money to customers’ accounts without tellers, posting cash deposit at weekend when the bank was not opened for operation, accessing loans without intention to pay and using proxy accounts to commit fraud, among others.

After firming up its series of investigations into the allegations, the EFCC arraigned him on the 30-count charge on May 17, 2018.

Fadayomi, however, pleaded not-guilty to all the charges which border on stealing, contrary to Section 390 (6)(9) Criminal Code of Cap 38, Vol. 2 Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

His plea led to a full trial which came to a halt on Friday. The EFCC was represented in the case by Ifeanyi Agwu and Oyelakin Oyediran.

After considering arguments by the prosecution and defence lawyers, Justice Owolabi held that the EFCC lawyers convinced the court that the accused indeed committed the offence with which he was charged.

Food critic for the Washington post Tom Sietsema posted about the incident on Twitter after the anonymous wife wrote to him to explain what had happened.

She claimed one of Tom's food reviews was accompanied by a photo of her husband dining with another woman.

Once she confronted him with the picture, she says he did not deny the affair.

The woman thanked Tom for "exposing a cheat".

"Well Tom your latest review is accompanied by a picture of my husband dining with a woman who isn’t me,” she wrote.

"Once confronted with photographic evidence, he confessed to having an ongoing affair.

"Just thought you’d be amused to hear of your part in the drama.

Caitlyn Jenner says she hasn't spoken to Khloe Kardashian in 'five or six years'

Caitlyn Jenner revealed that she hasn't spoken to stepdaughter Khloe Kardashian in the five years since she transitioned as she opened up on tonight's "I'm A Celeb."

The 70-year-old star spoke candidly to her campmates about coming out as transgender in 2014 in Friday night's episode of the ITV show.

And while the majority of her famous family were supportive, Caitlyn revealed that Khloe was "p**ed off" throughout her transition - but she isn't sure what her "issues" are.

When asked who she told first about her transition, Caitlyn shared: "The first was the kids, I started with Brandon my son and he said to me: 'Dad, I’ve always been so proud to be your son but I’ve never been more proud of you than right now.'

"I went through every kid and Khloe for some reason was p***ed off about something through this whole process, it’s been five or six years and I really haven’t talked to her since."

Appearing saddened by the soured relationship, the TV favorite added: "We were really close, I raised her since she was 5 years old, I really don’t know what her issues are."

Caitlyn married Khloe's mom Kris Jenner in 1991, acting as stepparent to her, Kim, Kourtney, and Rob Kardashian for over 20 years.

Caitlyn and Kris split in 2014, one year before she publicly came out as transgender, and Khloe has always been open about their difficult relationship since.

The 35-year-old star was unhappy with the way that Caitlyn treated Kris after their split, particularly furious with Caitlyn's 2017 memoir "The Secrets Of My Life," which alleged that Kris knew that her husband was transgender when they were still together.

She accused Caitlyn of "publicly shaming" the family and taking aim at her mom as the former Olympic champ lashed out at her ex-wife in the book.

Despite the rocky relationship with Khloe, Caitlyn also told her fellow campmates that she was "sad" to be missing Thanksgiving with her family today.

‘How N18bn was paid into Mompha’s account in Fidelity Bank’

A prosecution witness, Peter Ademola Adegoke, a Compliance Officer with Fidelity Bank Plc, on Friday told Justice Abdullai Liman of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos how the sum of N18bn was paid into the account of a company, Ismalob Global Investments, belonging to Ismaila Mustapha, also known as Mompha.

Mompha was arraigned on November 25, 2019 on a 14-count charge bordering on money laundering to the tune of N33 billion.

Adegoke, told the judge that evidence showed that Mompha was the sole signatory to Ismalob Global’s naira account.

Reading from the firm’s statement of account, Adegoke told the court that between 2015 and October 2019, there was a total inflow of N18.5bn into the account, while a total of about N18bn moved out within the same period.

He said the account had a balance of N598,000.

At Friday’s sitting, the first prosecution witness, PW1, Anne Nnenna Ezekannagha, a Manager in the Customers Service Department of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, told the court that Mompha’s company, Ismalob Ventures, was not registered with the CBN and that he did not have the license to operate as a Bureau de Change operator.

Led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, Ezekannagha further told the court that “We got a letter from the EFCC on the activities of Ismalob Global Ventures.

“However, we have no history of the name with the CBN.”

She said for the CBN to licence a firm as a BDC operator, such firm must show evidence of incorporation as a limited liability company by the Corporate Affairs Commission.

She explained that all licensed BDCs have a transaction limit of $5,000.

When the defence counsel, Gboyega Oyewole SAN, asked her whether it was unlawful for an individual who has foreign currency in his domiciliary account to give foreign currency to a friend in exchange for naira, the CBN official said it would not be unlawful if it was not a commercial transaction.

She said it becomes a commercial transaction if it involves making profit and it would be illegal.

A Benin City-based BDC operator, Ikenna Okafor, who testified as another prosecution witness, told the court that he did business with Ismalob Global Investment Limited through “one of its directors, Alhaji Ahmadu Mohammed.”

Okafor said Mohammed used to come to his base in Benin, Edo State, to buy Euro in the name of Ismalob Global Investment Limited.

“After negotiation with Ismalob Global Investment Limited through Alhaji Mohammed, he usually makes payment into my account through Ismalob,” Okafor said.

Under cross-examination by Oyewole, Okafor said he met Mompha for the first time three days ago at the EFCC office in Ikoyi.

The BDC operator said he was himself detained for seven days by the EFCC before being released on an administrative bail during the week.

'Sexually jealous' boyfriend put condoms on love rival's car and smashed it up

A man who vandalised a love rival's car with condoms before smashing it up has been fined and slapped with a banning order.

Lloyd Maloney and his friend Jamie Ruff drunkenly smashed up the Renault Clio after flying into a rage.

Maloney, 25, mistakenly believed the car's owner, Daniel Brunning, was in a sexual relationship with his girlfriend Lily Maguire.

Worcester Magistrate's Court heard he attacked the car outside Mr Brunning's home in Droitwich after previously draping condoms on the vehicle a month earlier.

Maloney and Ruff, 29, of Droitwich, admitted criminal damage and were ordered to pay Mr Brunning £300 compensation and £100 court costs.

Maloney was also slapped with a restraining order banning him from contacting Mr Brunning or going to his address.

Lesley Ashton, prosecuting, said the incident stemmed from "sexual jealousy."

She added: "Mr Maloney had been in a relationship for three-and-a-half years with a young lady called Lily Maguire.

"He had convinced himself she was in a relationship with someone called Daniel Brunning.

"The defendant believed she was involved with him.

"On November 9, Mr Brunning was at his address, at this time he gets a message from Lloyd Maloney saying, 'I'm sending Lily to yours, you can have her."

A statement from Mr Brunning read: "Then she turned up at my flat with all her bags saying he had kicked her out.

"I had guests over at the time.

"I had a text from Lloyd Maloney, he seems to be obsessed with the idea that me and Lily have been sleeping together, which we haven't.

"He has done several things to me out of anger like egging my house and leaving condoms on my car.

"He sent a message saying 'send Lily back' which I did.

"At this point I stopped messaging Lloyd because I was sick of all the drama."

The court heard that later that night Mr Brunning spotted Maloney outside, near the front of his flat where his car was parked.

Mr Brunning told the court: "I was looking out the window and I could see Lloyd stomping on the bumper, and he smashed the windscreen.

"At the same time Jamie hit the car with his fists.

"Lloyd then kicked the passenger side of the car then kicked the mirror."

The court heard that the windscreen was completely smashed, the wipers were bent and broken and the back passenger window was smashed.

Mark Lister, defending said: "Mr Maloney has no previous convictions.

"His belief was that his partner was in a relationship with Mr Brunning."

Sudan repeals law that controls how women act and dress in public

Sudan has repealed a restrictive public order law that controlled how women acted and dressed in public.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok paid tribute to women "who have endured the atrocities that resulted from the implementation of this law".

The country's transitional authorities also dissolved the party of former president Omar al-Bashir.

Mr Bashir seized power in a 1989 coup and ruled for nearly 30 years before peaceful protests ousted him in April.

Sudan is currently led by a joint military and civilian council, as well as a civilian-led cabinet headed by Prime Minister Hamdok.

Both these measures were a response to key demands of the protest movement, which aims to dismantle Mr Bashir's regime.

People celebrated in the streets of the capital Khartoum overnight after hearing about the dissolution of the National Congress Party (NCP) and the end of the public order law.

Aisha Musa, one of two women on Sudan's new Sovereign Council, told BBC Newsday that while the former regime focused on how women dressed and acted - including preventing women from wearing trousers - it ignored their education and healthcare.

"It is about time that all this corruption stops, that all this treatment for the women of Sudan stops," she said.

Famous free solo climber falls to his death

A world-renowned American free solo climber has died attempting to descend the side of a cliff face.

Brad Gobright, 31, fell around 300m (1,000 ft) to his death in El Potrero Chico in northern Mexico.

His companion, fellow climber Aidan Jacobson, 26, fell a shorter distance and survived with injuries.

Gobright was best known for free soloing, or climbing without any safety gear, but at the time the two were abseiling, a technique using ropes.

Abseiling accidents are believed to be the most common cause of fatalities in the sport.

The two men were simul-rappelling - a technique where two climbers descend opposite strands of an anchored rope, with their bodies acting as counterweights to each other - with an 80m rope, the Outside website reports.

"We started rapping," Mr Jacobson told the Outside website, using the North American term for abseiling. "I was a bit above him. I was on the left. He was on the right. Then all of a sudden, I felt a pop, and we started dropping."

While Mr Jacobson crashed through a bush, which cushioned his fall, before striking a ledge, Gobright fell to his death.

"It was basically a blur," Mr Jacobson added. "He screamed. I screamed. I went through some vegetation, and then all I remember is seeing his blue Gramicci shirt bounce over the edge."

Tributes to Gobright, who once held the coveted speed record on the Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite, have come in from across the climbing world.

Ekhomu warns of danger as Borno Government hires 150 Cameroonian vigilantes to fight Boko Haram

The President of the Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria, Dr Ona Ekhomu, has condemned the decision of the Borno State Government to hire 150 Cameroonian vigilantes to combat Boko Haram insurgents.

The security expert said the move by the state Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, was “a huge mistake” which could increase security threats in the North-East.

Ekhomu, in a statement on Thursday, said the state governor did not have the power to recruit foreigners to conduct internal security operations in the state.

He explained that there was no legal backing for foreign vigilantes to be armed to patrol Borno when they were not part of a recognised military alliance.

“If we say the military cannot defend Borno from Boko Haram insurgents, then the political legitimacy and authority of the Muhammadu Buhari government is questioned,” he added.

Ekhomu, warned that giving the Cameroonian Kesh-Kesh vigilantes freedom to patrol the Borno countryside would increase their knowledge of the area and enable them to mount attacks when they no longer benefited from the largesse of the state government.

The expert said if local vigilantes were trained and well equipped, they could fight alongside the Nigerian military, civilian JTF and local hunters to address the threat of Boko Haram.

Australia jails three men for Christmas terror plot

Three men were jailed Friday for an IS-inspired terror plot to cause mass casualties in Australia’s second largest city Melbourne during the 2016 Christmas period.

Hamza Abbas, 24, Ahmed Mohamed, 27 and Abdullah Chaarani, 29, were found guilty last year of plotting to use machetes and homemade bombs to target major sites -- including a train station and a church in a December attack.

In handing down the sentences judge Christopher Beale said the men had been accessing online material “supportive of Islamic State and violent jihad” in the lead-up to their arrest.

Beale said the men came to believe their planned “mass slaughter of innocent civilians” would be a “glorious act”.

“The stupidity of that belief was only matched by its malevolence,” Beale said.

Abbas was sentenced for 22 years, while Mohamed and Chaarani, who were facing their second terror charge, were jailed for 38 years.

Police uncovered the plot after monitoring the Australian-born men’s phone conversations, text messages and emails, and all four were arrested on December 22, 2016.

Then-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull called their plans “one of the most substantial terrorist plots that have been disrupted over the last several years”.

Four die as cholera outbreak hits Ogun state

Four persons have reportedly died while scores have been hospitalised as a result of a cholera outbreak in some parts of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Punch exclusively gathered that the worst-hit areas in Abeokuta included  Abule-Otun in Lafenwa, Kuto, Idi-Aba and Oke-Ijeun.

It was gathered that a woman and her child were the first casualties of the outbreak.

The two were reportedly rushed to a private hospital which later referred them to the state hospital.

Further findings showed that the cholera outbreak had started since November 4 and claimed the life of a woman at Abule-Otun, Lafenwa while her child was hospitalised.

Some other people were reported to have lost their lives due to the outbreak.

When Punch visited Abule-Otun and Isale-Odo where the outbreak started, it was gathered that many residents of the area were down with cholera.

One of the residents, Adeola Adeniyi, told Punch that some residents were defecating and vomiting.

He said some of them had been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, while others were rushed to the state hospital.

CAN kicks against social media and hate speech bills

The Christian Association of Nigeria has kicked against the proposed social media and hate speech bills, describing them as ploys to gag Nigerians.

The CAN President, Dr Samson Ayokunle called on the National Assembly to drop the bills and focus on legislation that could address insecurity, deplorable infrastructural amenities and the general welfare of the people.

This was contained in a statement by the National Director, Legal and Public Affairs, CAN, Evang. Samuel Kwamkur in Abuja on Thursday.

It said, “These two bills have generated misgivings and criticisms that they have led to uncommon tension and fears among citizens.

“Having looked at all sides to the debate, CAN is calling on the National Assembly, particularly the President of the Senate and all distinguished Senators to discountenance the two bills and put off completely any contemplation to pass them into Acts of the National Assembly as sincere lovers of the nation.”

While acknowledging that individuals and organizations had taken advantage of social media to cause tremendous damage to individuals and institutions, the Christian body described this as “unfortunate developments in the use of technology.”

The association argued that there were adequate laws to check the excesses of individuals and organizations that were misusing the social media and propagating hate speeches.

“The Penal Code, Criminal Code, Cyber Crime Act and other legal provisions on crimes that deal with hate speeches, defamation, libel and similar offences are clear and strong enough,” it noted.

CAN said it was concerned that Nigerians were distracted from discussing topical issues that had a direct bearing on their survival and wellbeing such as poverty, corruption, and the provision of good health facilities.

Ayokunle stated, “In this wise, we desire that governments at all levels and indeed members of the National Assembly pay greater attention to the issues of insecurity, economic hardship, poverty, bad roads, poor education and the dearth of infrastructure.”

Relic of Jesus’ crib to return to Bethlehem

After spending more than 1,000 years in Rome, a wooden fragment valued by Catholics as part of the crib in which Jesus was born will be welcomed back to the Holy Land today (Friday).

The fragment, part of a relic stored in the Italian capital’s Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, was described by the Custody of the Holy Land, run by Franciscan friars, as a “gift” from Pope Francis.

“It has contributed for centuries to marking the religiousness of the faithful in Rome and from elsewhere,” the custodians wrote, saying that large numbers of pilgrims from around the world went there to worship it.

The fragment will first stop in Jerusalem on Friday morning, where celebrations including a Mass and procession are planned.

It will then move to Bethlehem, traditionally known as Jesus’ birthplace, on Saturday, ahead of the start of the Advent season.

The so-called Holy Crib relic will be put on permanent display in the Franciscan Church of St Catherine, next to the Basilica of the Nativity, for pilgrims coming to the Palestinian city to worship.

The bible is silent about plastic surgery - Tony Rapu

Popular Nigerian pastor, Tony Rapu has shared a video online in which he talked about plastic surgery. According to the preacher, the Bible is silent about plastic surgery and he sees nothing wrong in it.

He however pointed out that if plastic surgery is done solely with the aim of becoming more sexually appealing, then there is a problem with the person psychologically. Here is an excerpt from the video below... and ofcourse the video too.

“The bible is silent about plastic surgery and there is really nothing in it that tells us it is wrong, so there has to be other considerations.

If a person If a person is concious of a deformity or physical aspect of his or her body that is causing them some emotional discomfort, then cosmetic surgery is certainly an option.

There are women who have had mastectomies and have had to have breast implants and we know many people who have benefited from surgeries, especially when the surgery is non-invasive and the side effects are minimal.

There really is nothing wrong with enhancing the quality of a person’s life by surgery especially when the person is able to breathe better, walk better, or talk better and especially when psychological health is improved.

The challenge is when surgery begins to be an attempt to meet an emotional void in a physical way or to attract unnecessary attention to a person, or to seek approval from other people. In some of these cases, we are then beginning to deal with psychological issues or deep-seated insecurities in a person.

If surgery is for sexual attractiveness, simply because you want to be found more sexually attractive, then perhaps you are dealing with a deeper issue in terms of esteem.

So if surgery is for enhancing a vanity, then we are dealing with issues internally that surgery would probaby never be able to satisfy.”

Student disclose how pupils drug teachers during examinations to cheat

A junior secondary school pupil has shocked a gathering of educationists in Alausa with a revelation.

The boy told the audience how fellow pupils drugged their teachers to cheat during examinations.

A parent also said she was severely distressed by her neighbour’s child drug abuse.

These were the revelation at the seminar organised by the Conference of Private Schools Associations in Lagos State (COPSAIL).

The event held at the Adeyemi Bero auditorium, Alausa on Monday.

Its theme was “Danger of Illicit Use of Hard Drugs Among our Youths.”

During the questions and answers session, the courageous boy stepped out to ask a question.

He said: “How do we solve a situation whereby fellow pupils drugged our teacher in order to cheat during examinations?”

The boy said once they add the substance in the drink, the teacher, after taking it, will sleep off all through the exams period and the pupils will be able to cheat.

He appealed to the state government to look into the matter.

Immediately after the boy’s expose, a parent took the microphone to narrate how her neighbour’s child’s drug abuse distressed her.

According to her, the child’s parent did not know that he was abusing drugs.

“I don’t know how to inform the child’s mother. She is my neighbour. We live in Ikorodu. She is the type that goes out in the morning and returns at night. The boy has friends who indulge in this illicit act,” she said.

Responding, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Education Mrs Abosede Adelaja said parents and teachers need to pay close attention to  children.

She described the drugged teacher as careless.

Mrs Adelaja said moral decadence is on the increase in the society.

She said: “I’ll not dispute that because if the children have not seen it or heard of it here, they won’t say it. We all need to go back and take care of our responsibility on these children be it parents, teachers or guardians. The kids are our future.

“If we see any negative behaviour or some changes in these children, we quickly find out what could be the cause. Most of the times parents are too busy looking for money for the children’s upkeep and the children use the opportunity to engage in so many social vices. To keep them busy, I’ll suggest more attention be paid to children.”

Senate calls for computerization of oil sector

The Senate on Thursday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to initiate the process of computerising the nation’s oil sector.

This, according to the Senate, is to curb the multifaceted challenges associated with the oil and gas production, transportation, and sales business in the country.

It also mandated its joint committee on petroleum up stream, downstream and gas resources to convene a public hearing to ascertain the quantity of oil and gas produced daily and the quality control mechanism engaged by NNPC.

Other task for the committee is to determine the amount of waste of petroleum products through pilfering, pipeline vandalisation and leakages, and international best practices of computerized oil and gas business management, including pipeline protection and quantity and quality control.

The resolutions were reached after the Senate adopted a motion sponsored by Senator George Sekibo (PDP, Rivers East) and 29 others on the “need to install computerized oil facilities management gadgets for Nigerian crude oil businesses.”

Presenting the motion, Sekibo said it was of concern that while other countries in the same business venture have gone digital for the past 50 years, Nigeria is still using analogue technology in doing its petroleum technology.

“We still use human beings (4 persons) to monitor a kilometer of pipeline, giving undue opportunities to oil pilfered, giving rise to unnecessary pipeline explosion, causing deaths and unquantifiable loss of products and other human valuables,” he said.

He regretted that Nigeria with over 61 years in oil business could not give account of total amount of products produced, sold, wasted and lost through pilfering, or pipeline vandalization.

He said petroleum products business should have been given priority attention in terms of protection, expansion, quantity and total quality control especially with oil as the mainstay of Nigeria’s income and foreign reserves.

He said Nigeria is the biggest oil producer in Africa with maximum capacity of of about 2.5 million per barrel, but noted that, “this meager quantity is always under attack through pipeline vandalism and oil platform theft which has reduced quantity produced”.

Sekibo said, “one key area of fighting corruption is through effective management of resource itself, that is the source of revenue just as this administration emphasizes on the fight against revenue pilfering by the operators”.

“The computerization of oil management system assist in the pipeline protection, trigger off alarms when any section of the pipeline is disturbed for whatever reason. The system detects if there is a weak section, captures suspected intruders on the pipeline, and are equipped with fire fighting gadgets in the event of fire outbreak”.

Woman who married homeless man after seeing him looking for food in her bin is devastated by his death

A woman who saved a homeless man from the streets after she discovered him rifling through her bins has been left devastated by his death.

Joan Neininger married Ken Selway 40 years after she spotted him outside her house.

They were dubbed the real life Lady and the Tramp when they got hitched in 2017 after finding him  looking for food in Gloucester.

Ken, 92, died of pneumonia last week - three weeks after he was admitted to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

But despite being distraught at her loss, Joan says she is grateful for nearly three years of married bliss which followed their wedding at Cinderford Registry Office in the Forest of Dean in February 2017.

"I miss him terribly," said grieving Joan.

"When we first met I never dreamed we would end up together in the way we did so in a way we did have our happy ending.

"I loved him. He was a lovely man and we just suited each other. I will miss the companionship and the laughter. He could be such good fun at times."

When she first noticed a young Ken roaming around Gloucester, Joan presumed he was staying in a B&B and just had nowhere to go out in the day.

But then she saw him rummaging through the bins for food and realised he was homeless.

Ken refused to accept offers of help so with the blessing of her family Joan started leaving wrapped sandwiches for him to find.

Although her husband Norman also tried to help Ken he struggled with the schizophrenia and for a time it did put a strain on their marriage.

But the mum-of-three persuaded Ken to take medication for his mental health problems and eventually all three lived together happily in a cottage which which Joan described as "like a little paradise".

She says the men were like brothers until Norman died in 1983, leaving Ken and Joan in the cottage until he needed extra care and was moved to supported housing.

Joan went to live with her daughter but they pined for each other so during the 2016 leap year Joan proposed and they married on her 88th birthday, four days after Valentine's Day.

The Londoner, who was evacuated to Wales where he became a Bevin Boy, was on a mission to find relatives when he ended up sleeping in a derelict house near Joan's book shop in Gloucester.

Sultan of Sokoto urges minister to decongest Abuja

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has advised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Mohammed Bello, to develop satellite towns in order to decongest the city centre.

Abubakar III, who is also the President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), gave the advice when he led a delegation of religious and traditional leaders on a visit to the minister.

The monarch said if the satellite towns were well developed, there would be less demand on infrastructures at the city centre.

The Sultan urged Bello to be fair and just to all and sundry and discharge his responsibilities effectively with the fear of Allah.

“Since you have the opportunity to occupy the office of the FCT Minister, please see how you can develop the satellite towns so that you decongest the city centre.

“This will ensure that many people, if they finish their work, they will go out of the city centre so that there will be less demand on infrastructure at the capital here.

“I think it is very important that we look at such. This is our little advice to you,” he said.

The monarch said the purpose of the visit was to show solidarity, respect and commitment to further strengthen the strong ties that had been existing between the NSCIA and all administrations in the country.

The minister restated his commitment to work assiduously to develop infrastructures in the territory with a view to making the city one of the best in the world.

Nigerians are free to come into South Africa- South African Minister of Tourism

Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, on Thursday called on Nigerians to continue visiting the country as the rainbow nation remained open for visitors from across the globe.

Kubayi-Ngubane made the call during an engagement session with Nigerian tourism stakeholders in Lagos against the backdrop of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

She said that there was a great need to advance bilateral relations between Nigeria and South Africa in the creative industry to achieve remarkable success for the two nations and the African continent.

The minister said South Africa regretted the situation, acknowledging that such attacks had happened in the past and the authorities had taken steps to ensure it was not repeated.

“I want you all to know that South Africa is open for visitors from Nigeria and other parts of the world as against insinuations by many that the country is repelling visitors.

“Friendship between South Africa and Nigeria precedes South Africa’s democracy. We didn’t achieve our democracy on our own; we stood on the shoulders of many African nations who fought with us to achieve the democracy we enjoy today.

“To ensure this does not reoccur, the President has appointed a former President of Tanzania and Mozambique as part of the people to find lasting solutions to the problem,” she said.
