Coronavirus: Increase prices of face mask, sanitiser and go to jail – Nigerian govt warns

The Federal Government has warned that suppliers and retailers using the excuse of coronavirus case in Nigeria to inflate protective apparel will be prosecuted.

It said sellers of face masks and latex gloves, personal hygiene products like sanitizers and anti-bacterial wipes, have increased prices of the products which are necessary in preventing infection or spread of COVID-19.

Federal Competition & Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), on Saturday, said the inordinate practice during national public health concern violates both moral codes and extant law.

Babatunde Irukera, Chief Executive Officer, in a statement he signed, noted that abusing citizens’ sensitivity, apprehension, anxiety and vulnerability, especially during emergencies that could adversely affect national security is a violation of law.

It said the commission’s surveillance efforts have revealed that even reputable pharmacies and department stores are engaging in price gouging and manipulating supplies in a manner that distorts the market, or temporarily restricts availability in order to unreasonably/unfairly increase prices.

“Any conspiracy, combination, agreement or arrangement to unduly limit or manipulate supply, in order to unreasonably enhance price or otherwise restrain competition is a criminal offence under S.108(1)(b) and (c), FCCPA”, he noted.

“Any exercise or exploitation of undue pressure in selling or the sale of goods or services, or price manipulation between displayed, and selling price are also serious violations of the FCCPA under Sections 115(3) and 124(1).

“Taking advantage of the possibility of infection by a dangerous communicable disease to control supply, or unilaterally increase prices is predatory as it preys on the desperation of citizens.

“Considering the circumstances and the vital national interest/security this illegal conduct undermines, the Commission intends to strongly enforce the full letter of the law, including the fullest extent of penalties associated with this conduct,” he added.

The FCCPC encouraged consumers to be vigilant, and report such unreasonable or arbitrary exploitative price increase or trade practices to the Commission by telephone on 08056002020, or 08056003030, or by email: contact@fccpc.gov.ng.

Air force kills, destroy terrorist facilities in sambisa forest

Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole has neutralized some Boko Haram terrorists and destroyed some of their facilities in air strikes conducted on the region.

The strikes targeted a location referred to as the “S” Region in the heart of the Sambisa Forest, Borno State.

Air force spokesman, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, in a statement said the air strikes were executed in continuation of Operation Rattle Snake 3 after series of Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions.

He said the reconnaissance showed that the terrorists, with their vehicles, motorcycles and logistics facilities camouflaged under the dense forest vegetation, had intensified activities in the “S” Region with a view to launching further attacks on civilian settlements and troops’ locations in the area.

He said, the task force therefore detailed its fighter jets and helicopter gunships to attack the location, scoring crucial hits leading to the neutralization of some Boko Haram fighters as well as the destruction of some of their structures.

He said, the Nigerian Air Force, operating in concert with surface forces, will sustain its air campaign to shape the battlespace in the Northeast for the effective conduct of further ground and air operations.

Russia, Syria under attack over killing of Turkish soldiers

Russia and Syria on Friday came under strong criticisms from western countries in the UN Security Council over the killing of 33 Turkish soldiers in Syria on Thursday.

According to reports, the soldiers died in an attack by Russia-backed Syrian government forces in the northwestern province of Idlib.

In separate contributions at an emergency meeting of the council in New York, the United Kingdom, United States, France, Germany, Belgium and Estonia condemned the attack.

But China expressed tacit support for Syria, saying the Idlib crisis was rooted in control of the province by terrorists, adding that all external peace efforts must respect Syria’s territorial integrity.

But Dominican Republic, Indonesia, South Africa, Vietnam, Tunisia and Niger took the middle course by calling for immediate ceasefire and urging all parties to explore diplomatic solutions.

The strongest words of the evening came from the U.S. whose ambassador, Kelly Craft, said she was not at the meeting to listen and discus, but to speak directly without mincing words.

Describing the attack as senseless and barbaric, Craft said Turkey had her country’s support to “respond in self-defence’’ to the “unjustified attack.”

The representative of U.K., Jonathan Allen, decried the suffering of the Syrian people caused by “the merciless and disproportionate campaign being waged by the Syrian regime and its Russian backers.”

Allen painted a graphic picture of the humanitarian crisis resulting from the Syrian government’s military offensive in Idlib and called on those responsible to desist.

In his contribution, China’s representative, Zhang Jun, said the Syrian conflict had its complicated background, adding that the council must be “impartial, objective and comprehensive’’ in facilitating political settlement.

Self acclaimed relationship expert and blogger, Joro Olumofin has shaved his beards due to fear of coronavirus. The relationship expert shared a photo of himself at the barbing salon shaving his beards.

Husband drowns wife then tries to flee country with suitcase full of s.e.x toys

A man who drowned his disabled wife was caught as he tried to flee the country with a suitcase full of s.e.x toys.

Peter Rex Dansie, 71, murdered his wife Helen by pushing her wheelchair into a pond in Adelaide, Australia.

On Easter Sunday 2017, he waited until it was almost dark and most people had left before shoving her into the water.

He briefly climbed into the water to make it look as though he'd tried to save her, before calling the police.

His story was called into question when it was discovered he'd left his watch and wallet behind in his car, which Supreme Court judge Justice David Lovell said showed "expectation on your part that you would be getting wet that night," reports the Daily Star.

Helen, 67, was a former microbiologist who had used a wheelchair since the 1990s after having a stroke.

The court heard that Dansie no longer wanted to care for his ailing wife, and had been having online conversations with a woman in China, with whom he intended to have a relationship.

He had booked plane tickets and the day before his flight, police searched his home and found a suitcase filled with condoms, Viagra, sex toys and lingerie.

"Helen, your loving and devoted wife for over 40 years, had simply become a burden to you," Justice Lovell said.

"This was a chilling, planned murder of a person whose mistake was to trust you."

Dansie was found guilty of her murder in December, and on Thursday was jailed for life with a non-parole period of 25 years.

He's been granted leave to appeal against his conviction, with a hearing scheduled for May.

During sentencing, Justice Lovell described the killing as "evil" and said Dansie had shown no remorse.

In a statement read to the court, Helen's son Grant Dansie said he hoped the case would result in a review of how the Australian government protects the rights of the most vulnerable.

He said there were "gaping holes in the system" which was intended to protect them.

21 year-old student who was 'cursed from birth' collapses and dies at university

The father of a student who died from a drug overdose said his son was 'cursed from birth'. Remi Gosal, 21, was found dead on a sofa in a student hall on March 2 last year.

He had moved from Canada six months prior to study law and Spanish at the University of Sheffield.

In the early hours of the morning, CCTV captured Remi stumbling into the block of flats where he lived, with police noting that he 'appeared quite intoxicated' and was 'unsteady on his feet'.

After finding Remi at 5.30pm in the communal kitchen, his friend tried to wake him before noticing his skin was cold to touch, according to Examiner Live.

Desperate for help and fearing the worst, his flatmate ran down to find security before dialling 999 with ambulance staff advising him to try and start CPR on Remi.

Paramedics pronounced him dead when they arrived at the flat.

A toxicology report found that he had fatal levels of codeine and alprazolam in his bloodstream, with the latter also known under its trade name of Xanax.

Remi, who had a black belt in taekwondo, was described as a 'sporty and bright boy', an inquest on February 28 heard.

His father Sarj Gosal said: "His level of drug use was at an addiction level, no doubt. From a cold, objective point of view I’m not surprised because Remi was hospitalised back home a couple of times.

“We took him to emergency once because he was on Xanax."

He also said there was a strong history of substance abuse within their family and he therefore believed his son was 'cursed from birth'.

"Remi didn't touch a drink for years but once he found alcohol and drugs he was hooked, particularly with the pills and alprazolam," Sarj added.

"He was diagnosed with anxiety but after two weeks of being prescribed pills he liked the buzz and feel of it so his GP discontinued that. But thereafter he would buy Xanax off the street."

A few months prior to his death, Remi visited his GP in Sheffield amid fears he was becoming “restless and anxious” and would fall behind with his university studies.

He said, however, that he was not feeling depressed and there were no inclinations that he would self harm or had done in the past.

A follow-up appointment was made by the GP for three weeks after his initial visit in November 2018. However, Remi never showed up at the practice.

In his final remarks, assistant coroner Stephen Eccleston concluded that Remi died as a direct result of the codeine and alprazolam found in his bloodstream.

Bride dumped for being 'too fat' gets ultimate revenge winning Miss Great Britain

Three years ago, Jen Atkin was enjoying planning her dream wedding, when her fiancé suddenly called it off.

His reason for ditching his blushing bride-to-be? She'd been eating too much junk food and had gotten "too fat".

Well fast forward to present day and Jen, now happily married to someone else, has managed to get the ultimate revenge on her ex by being crowned Miss Great Britain.

The 26-year-old aviation administrator who lives in Ulceby, swapped takeaways for healthy eating and shed eight stone, going from a size 22 to a size 10 over the course of two years.

After slimming from 17st to 9st, Jen was named Miss Scunthorpe before going on to compete for the title of Miss England in 2018, where she finished first runner up.

She then briefly retired from competing in pageants, but decided to give it one more shot after having her name put forward for the 75th Miss Great Britain competition.

And she only went and nabbed the title last Friday at the glittering national final in Leicester.

After winning the pageant, Jen said: "I'm still in shock at winning, I'm so happy I can't even put it into words - I honestly can't believe it.

"When I started doing this it was just for a bit of fun, I never imagined how far I would come. Three years ago I would never ever expected to be winning Miss GB.

"Hard work really does pay off."

She continued to say: "Winning Miss Great Britain marks the end of a long and difficult, but also amazing, journey.

"Although my body has changed so much I think don't think my personality has, and I think that's really helped me.

"The judges were able to see what kind of person I really am."

The beauty queen went on to recall how her break-up inspired her to make big changes in her life.

"[Before we broke up] I would eat huge portions of pasta or pizza then a family-size chocolate bar. At weekends, we'd turn into virtual recluses sitting on the sofa in our pyjamas eating takeaways - spending £20 each time.

"The day he left I thought my world had ended - I cried for weeks and used food as my comfort. But it ended up being the best thing that's happened to me."

Jen soon signed up to her local gym and hasn't looked back since - instead she's looking on to bigger and better things, including boosting her country music career.

"I'm over the moon," she added. "I have so much in the pipeline for my reign, including the release of my next country single this Spring."

A Quick Trip to The Porkmoney Ranch (photos)

With an expected holding capacity of 40,000, Porkmoney’s Epe pig ranch is well on its way to become the biggest privately-owned pig farm in Africa.

Porkmoney is a pioneer in the pig-farming segment of Nigeria’s agriculture sector. The company, with expertise in pig production and processing, is not taking any chances with its self-imposed target of becoming the premier name in the entire livestock agriculture industry.

Currently, there are about 1000 weaners of different breeds on the company’s 100-acre property in Lagos. This number is expected to triple in the next few weeks. The ranch is eponymously named Porkmoney Ranch.

The company’s finishing model [raising pigs from birth to maturation] is an excellent and unique strategy in Nigeria’s agriculture industry.

Muyiwa Folorunso, the co-founder of Porkmoney says the ranch will boost the confidence of the company’s investors – that their money is in the right place, and the company is making the right moves blazing the trail.

The finishing strategy coupled with the company’s semi-intensive free-range system will ensure that unnecessary cost is avoided. The free-range system will also help the pigs grow healthy and strong.

The Porkmoney Ranch is destined to be a mecca of investors, and all other individuals or groups who have concerns with Nigeria’s fast-growing and all-important agriculture sector. A milestone Muyiwa Folorunso expects to reach in a very short while.

Nigeria’s agriculture sector is the country’s highest employer of labour and one of its sources of foreign exchange mostly through exports of cash crops.

However, there is an increasing focus on vertical integration – the total process of production, processing, and marketing. The Porkmoney ranch is a game-changer that will confirm the agtech company’s status as a pioneer in the pig segment of the livestock sector. It would also boost the confidence of investors that they are in the right place.

To paraphrase Muyiwa Folorunso, Porkmoney is putting its money where its mouth is - building the largest privately-owned pig-farm in West Africa and doing the hard work of farming so that its investors can earn money.

Coronavirus: face masks, hand sanitizers sold out in lagos

Face masks, hand sanitizers and head masks are now scarce in most supermarkets and pharmacy shops in Lagos state as the Nigerian government on Friday confirmed the first Coronavirus case in the state.

A visit to most pharmacy shops and supermarkets on Lagos mainland areas such as Surulere, Ikeja, Agege and Ogba by dailytrust reporters on Friday shows that the products were bought off the shelfs early Friday morning by residents in the respective areas.

When daily trust  reporters visited major marts such as Shoprite, Spar, Medplus, Healthrite – all located in Adeniran Ogunsanya Mall in Surulere area of the state, none has hand sanitizer and facemask as early as 9:47am.

A shop attendant at the mall, who craved anonymity, said people came in as early as 8am when the mall opened and bought off every sanitizers and masks available.

Other major supermarkets and pharmacy stores visited in Ikeja and Agege areas of the state no longer have the products in stock as well.

However, it was  observed that most Lagos residents now go about their daily activities with hand sanitizers and few wore face masks, just as they try to avoid crowd contacts in most areas visited.

Italian infected with Coronavirus attempts to escape Lagos centre

A 44-year-old Italian who tested positive for the deadly Coronavirus in Lagos on Friday was angry and attempted to escape from the isolation center where he was being quarantined.

According to Punch, a high ranking health worker, at the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, Lagos (formerly, Infectious Diseases Hospital), said the patient had “complained of excessive heat and mosquitoes” at the isolation center.

“The patient wanted to run away yesterday (Thursday). The Italian man, who seems to be an engineer, was very angry that the room where he was kept was very hot.

“There is nothing there (inside the isolation ward) aside from bed and hospital locker. He almost ran away and is still threatening to do that,” The Punch quoted the health worker.

The worker who was reported to have spoken under the condition of anonymity described the isolation facility as ‘very poor quality’ and added that “the authorities have not matched words with action”.

However, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, had said on Friday that the state government had built a facility to handle the situation, adding that the patient was getting better.

But the source, who emerged from the Out-Patient Department of the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, alleged that the level of preparedness in Lagos State for infectious diseases such as coronavirus and Lassa fever “is zero.”

The source revealed that the isolation area was a room in one of the wards and that it was quickly vacated to accommodate the Italian.

The source alleged, “The only thing demarcating the room from other rooms in the ward is a red and white barricade tape. That is where the Italian man that tested positive to coronavirus is kept.

“There is no single equipment inside that place. It is just like any other regular hospital room with a bed. That building you see that is being repainted is the original place meant to quarantine coronavirus patients.

“As you can see, the place is not ready. The state government is just renovating it, despite the fact that the virus started spreading since December 2019. It is really sad that a country like Nigeria is never ready to medically contain infectious disease outbreak.

“This is why most health workers leave because they are predisposed to the danger of infection.”

Meanwhile, the Medical Director of the Mainland Hospital, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, has assured that the patient “is stable and responding to treatment.”

He said the patient, who was admitted and quarantined on Thursday, “is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed and quarantined in accordance with health safety standard.”

“We are doing trace-monitoring, and, for now, we cannot say how many people he must have come in contact with.

“We are on top of the situation and all necessary precautions are being put in place,” he added.

Tesco worker jailed for dumping date's body in woods after chemsex death

A Tesco retail store manager who dumped the body of a chef in woodland near his flat has been jailed for six years.

Hiran Chauhan, 24, went to the home of Neil Cuckson, 32, after they chatted about taking drugs on the dating app Grindr, Manchester Crown Court heard. Cuckson said they both drank liquid ecstasy – GHB – during ‘chemsex’ and admitted that he injected Mr Chauhan and himself with crystal meth before they fell asleep in the early hours of July 3.

The defendant claimed he woke up to find Mr Chauhan had died – but rather than alert the authorities, he kept the body in his flat and went to work as normal at a Tesco Express in Manchester city centre. He then bought a Suzuki Swift for £200 on the website Gumtree, after earlier purchasing a wheelbarrow and a pitchfork, and in the early hours of July 8 was caught on CCTV struggling to lift the body into the car’s boot.

Cuckson dragged the body, wrapped in plastic sheeting, across the road from his flat in Eccles Old Road to nearby woodland.

The body of Mr Chauhan, a chef at El Capo restaurant in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, was discovered by two 14-year-old schoolboys the next day, along with a woman.

As she waited for police to arrive she said she noticed a white male wearing a Tesco jacket on the other side of the road – describing him as ‘not looking shocked’.

Shortly afterwards, Cuckson bought a saw before inquiries led police to his flat, in which officers noted a ‘pungent smell’.

The defendant was arrested on suspicion of murder and en route to custody he said: ‘He overdosed that’s what happened, I didn’t kill him.’

Michael Lavery, prosecuting, said: ‘He told police that by the time he knew Hiran was dead he was panicking and that he was trying to cover up what had happened .

‘He said he formed the opinion that Hiran was quite naive when it came to drugs, not understanding the slang or street names which attach to them.’

Mr Lavery said the post-mortem examination was hampered and limited by the severe decomposition and degeneration of Mr Chauhan’s body

The prosecutor said the victim’s family believed he was not a regular drug user and a cousin said he was ‘very naive and vulnerable’.

Mr Chauhan’s sister, Gemma, read out her victim personal statement from the witness box as Cuckson, originally from Northern Ireland, stared at the floor in the dock throughout.

She said: ‘Hiran just wanted to be loved. He used the dating sites in the hope of finding this.

‘Dating sites are the norm in this generation but you do not expect to meet up with someone and not return home safely.

‘He should have rang an ambulance. There was a chance my brother could have been saved but no, Neil Cuckson thought he was better than a medical professional.’

She added: ‘What kind of individual thinks it’s normal to sleep next to a body for six days, wrap him up, buy a car to hide a body, drag a body across a road and dump a body in a field?

‘This is not normal and he deserves to suffer.’

In December, Cuckson admitted preventing a lawful and decent burial, perverting the course of justice and supplying Class A and Class C drugs.

He was facing trial next week on an outstanding count of administering a noxious substance – crystal meth – to endanger life but today pleaded guilty to the charge.

Michael James, defending Cuckson, said: ‘He understands he can never change what he did and he can never apologise enough to the family but he does show some real remorse.’

Sentencing, judge Alan Conrad QC told the defendant: ‘The state of Mr Chauhan’s body is a direct result of you having concealed his death and hidden the body, which made it impossible for experts to obtain the results which they usually can in the case of a suspicious death.

‘This has added greatly to the grief of his family.

‘They will never know exactly how and in what circumstances Hiran Chauhan, whom they loved so much, actually died.’

He added ‘anybody with any decency’ would have alerted the authorities to the situation.

President Buhari suspends amnesty programme coordinator

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the suspension of the coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Charles Quaker Dokubo.

Presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, said in a statement that President Buhari had directed that the caretaker committee set up to review the programme should oversee the running of the programme henceforth with a view to ensuring that government objectives were achieved.

Adesina said the National Security Adviser (NSA) set up a caretaker committee to look into the activities of the programme on the directive of President Buhari.

He said the directive followed numerous allegations and petitions surrounding the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

The statement said part of the committee’s task was to ensure that allocated resources were properly utilized in consonance with government’s objective of alleviating problems in the Niger Delta region, and stamping out corruption in the Amnesty Programme.

The NSA, the statement added, recommended to Mr President that the coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, Dokubo, be suspended, a recommendation which had been approved took immediate effect.

Heart attack kills Congo’s intel chief Kahimbi

Congo’s military intelligence chief, General Delphin Kahimbi died on Friday after suffering a heart attack, his wife said.

His death followed media reports that an investigation had been opened into allegations that he tried to destabilize the country.

Kahimbi was also under European Union sanctions over alleged human rights abuses when he commanded operations against rebels in east Democratic Republic of Congo in the 200Os and during his tenure as military intelligence chief.

Kahimbi was appointed by former President Joseph Kabila. Kabila’s successor as head of state, Felix Tshisekedi, had been under pressure from the United States to hold the general to account for alleged human rights abuses.

“He had a heart attack at home and he died soon after we arrived at the hospital,” his wife, Brenda Kahimbi, told Reuters by phone.

Two sources in the security service said Kahimbi had recently been suspended over the accusations that he had sought to hide weapons and destabilize the country.

Kahimbi was also barred this month from leaving the country, the security sources and two sources in the migration service said.

The military confirmed Kahimbi’s death but did not confirm the cause or comment on the accusations against him or the reports that he had been suspended.

Police under fire for allegedly sharing graphic photos from the Kobe Bryant crash scene

Some L.A. County Sheriff's Deputies have come under fire for allegedly sharing disturbing photos of the scene where Kobe Bryant, his daughter, Gigi, and 7 others died in a helicopter crash, and the photos included remains from the gruesome aftermath.

Kobe's family, along with the family's of other victims of the crash were reportedly contacted by the Los Angeles police department and warned that graphic death photos of their family members may leak online shortly.

It's not clear who took the photos, but it was being talked about by first responders just 2 days after the crash, according to the L.A. Times. The report adds that at least one L.A. County Sheriff's official had the photos on his cell phone "in a setting that had nothing to do with the investigation."

The gruesome photos were also passed around by members of the L.A. County Fire department and the department is now investigating.

According to the LA Times, they spoke to someone who saw the leaked photos.

The report states: "One of the sources told The Times that the sharing of photos of the crash scene and the victims’ remains was the topic of a discussion among first responders two days after the crash.

"The source said he saw one of the photos on the phone of another official, in a setting that had nothing to do with the investigation of the crash. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter."

According to TMZ, one of the L.A. County Sheriff's deputies who responded to the crash scene - a trainee - took photos and at some point went to a bar and, as one source put it, 'he tried to impress a girl by showing her the photos'."

The bartender overheard the conversation and filed an online complaint with the Sheriff's Dept, the publication adds.

The LA Times spoke with Captain Jorge Valdez on Wednesday, and he said that "his office had been obligated to contact the family members of crash victims" about the photos. The official told The Times the reason for contacting them was not because of the allegation but rather because there was a media inquiry over the allegation. He added that he was "unaware of any complaint" about the leaked photos.

Women in gombe now boil used sanitary pads and drink its brew to get High - NDLEA

The Gombe State command of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has revealed that some women in the state has grown from normal drugs addiction to now boiling of used sanitary pads, filtering and drinking the water to get high.

Muhammad Alkali, the commander in charge of Funakaye Local Government Area of the state disclosed this, while sensitising residents of Bajoga, the headquarters of the council, against illicit drugs.

Alkali lamented that the act of drug abuse among women in Gombe is growing by day.

He said the sensitisation campaign which the agency carried out at the palace of the Emir Funakaye was to carry the traditional rulers along in the fight against illicit drugs abuse.

“This is because it has come to our notice that mostly female addicts have devised means of getting high without consuming constitutionally-band or known substances. They now boil used sanitary pads mixed with other substance mostly waste, filters the water before drinking.

“You see this is very bad for as humans, our society really needs the help of all and sundry in this fight as NDLEA cannot do it alone,” Alkali said.

Ambode appeals court ruling stopping legislators’ probe

Ex-Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has appealed the ruling of a Lagos High Court, which struck out a suit seeking to stop the House of Assembly from probing his procurement of 820 buses meant to revolutionise public transportation.

The lawmakers suspended the probe after Ambode secured a court order, which directed parties to the suit to maintain status quo.

However, in a ruling to the interlocutory action filed by the governor yesterday, Justice Yetunde Adesanya, who presided over the matter, struck out the suit by the former governor on the grounds that it was premature and not justiceable.

But in the notice of appeal filed by his counsel, Mr. Tayo Oyetibo, SAN, before the Lagos division of the appeal court, Ambode prayed the court to set aside the decision of the trial court and allow the appeal.

Besides, the former governor prayed the appellate court to remit the matter back to the high court to allow the chief judge reassign it to another judge of the high court for trial.

Respondents in the appeal are the House of Assembly, its Speaker Mr.  Mudashiru Obasa and the House Clerk, Mr. A. A. Sanni. Others are Mr. Fatai Mojeed, the chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee set up by the House to probe the procurement of the buses and eight members of the committee.

In one of the four grounds of appeal, Ambode argued that the trial court erred in law when it held that the suit he filed was not mature.

Coronavirus: Newcastle ban handshakes at training ground

The threat of catching coronavirus has persuaded Newcastle United to abandon a cherished morning ritual.

Steve Bruce’s players have become accustomed to shaking hands with every teammate and member of the backroom staff each day as they assemble for training but the practice has been temporarily halted on medical advice.

“There’s a ritual here that everybody shakes hands with everybody as soon as we see each other every morning,” said Bruce as he prepared for Saturday’s game against Burnley at St James’ Park.

“But we’ve stopped that on the advice of our club doctor. Thankfully, we’ve got a superb doctor here and he will keep us informed of what we have to do. We’re like everybody else, we’re glued to the TV for where it’s going to go next and let’s hope it doesn’t get any worse in this country.”

“Everybody has to be respectful of it, don’t we? It’s been rammed down our throats often enough, on TV and the rest of it.”

The potential need to confront coronavirus represents uncharted waters for the football community, Bruce included, but clubs are familiar with the need to sometimes isolate and quarantine individuals to cope with assorted other viruses and infections of the type which afflicted Newcastle in December.

“In confined areas, like we’ve got here, you have to be careful,” said Bruce. “There was a time over Christmas when there was a virus knocking around here – not coronavirus – so we’re a bit mindful of the fact that a bug can sweep through.

We had four or five [players] at Christmas and two of my staff [suffering from the virus], so you stay at home, basically. Stephen Clemence [the first-team coach] didn’t travel to Manchester United. But it’s always something you’re looking at.

“When you’re in a small environment like we are, you have to guard against things like shaking hands. If someone has a bug or whatever they stay away, because otherwise it rapidly spreads.”

Photos: Anger as hoodlums kill cab driver on Lagos bridge

A cab driver, identified simply as Comrade Ehis, has been killed by hoodlums on the Eko Bridge, Lagos Island area of Lagos State.

Punch Metro gathered that Ehis was driving on the bridge when his car suffered a flat tyre, which made him to park at a section of the bridge to change it before continuing his journey.

It was learnt that while changing the tyre, some hoodlums lurking on the bridge took advantage of the fact that the driver was alone to attack him and dispossess him of his valuables.

After robbing Ehis, the hoodlums reportedly threw him down the bridge and fled the scene.

Ehis was said to have died on the spot, but the circumstances surrounding his death got Nigerians talking, some of whom condemned the government for not providing security on the bridge where he was attacked.

A company, Moving Train Pilot Association, in a condolence message on Twitter, commiserated with the bereaved family and urged the state government to beef up security on the Eko Bridge to keep the users safe.

The post on its Twitter handle, @MOTPA_NG’s, read in part, “Comrade Ehis met with an untimely death late last night on Eko Bridge, close to Costain. We pray and hope his family have the fortitude to bear the loss. Securities need to be beefed up on Eko Bridge and all lights need to be working from 6-7pm Sir @jidesanwoolu @followlasg.

“He had a flat tyre, came down to proffer solution then got attacked by hoodlums who took his belongings and then still threw him off the bridge. If there was security personnel’s presence and lights on the bridge were lit then he wouldn’t have died or met with the hoodlums.”

A picture attached to the post showed Ehis’ remains lying on the ground. Bloodstains were also seen on the floor, while another picture of him posing in his car was also attached to the post.

Reacting to the post, Nigerians blamed the government and the police for insecurity on bridges in the state and also shared their experience when their vehicles developed mechanical faults on the Eko Bridge.

Pope Francis is still feeling 'slightly unwell' and has cancelled his official audiences today, the Vatican has said.

The 83-year-old pontiff has scrapped an audience with tech chiefs including Microsoft and IBM executives today - a day after calling off an appearance at a Mass in Rome.

Francis had appeared to have a cold during an Ash Wednesday service at the Vatican earlier this week.

The Vatican has offered no details on the nature of the pope's illness, except to say that he had a 'slight indisposition'.

Vatican press officer Matteo Bruni said Francis celebrated morning Mass as usual today and greeted participants at the end.

However, he has cleared his diary of everything apart from meetings at the Santa Marta guest house where he lives.

Francis had been due to receive executives from Microsoft, IBM and other technology companies on Friday morning.
