Taskforce nabs vehicle conveying suspected cannabis in Abia state [photo]

The Abia State taskforce on COVID-19 has arrested a Toyota Siena bus conveying bags of substance suspected to be cannabis at the Ogbudiukwu community, in the Umuahia South council area.

Confirming the incident, Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Chris Ezem, disclosed that apart from the suspected substance, the task force also recovered One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira on the bus.

He explained that investigation has revealed the identity of the driver and assured that he would face the wrath of the law, as the state will not tolerate such acts.

Ezem reiterated that the ban on inter-state traveling remains in force and urged all to continue to support the efforts of the State government over the lockdown to protect the state from COVID-19.

21 die after consuming contaminated liquor in Mexico

Some 21 people have died and 13 others have been seriously injured in the Mexican state of Jalisco after ingesting contaminated liquor, regional authorities have said.

In total, 56 people have been affected in two municipalities in the western state since Saturday, state health official Huge Esparza said during a press conference, including the 21 who have died and 29 who have become ill.

The 13 who became seriously ill were transported via helicopter to hospitals in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco, while the rest were discharged, Esparza said.

On Saturday, patients began presenting with “symptoms of blurred vision and/or vision loss, intense abdominal pain, difficulty breathing and convulsions,” he said.

They had ingested a form of cane alcohol purer than that made for drinking that was manufactured in neighboring Michoacan state.

Some 700 liters of the liquor were seized over the following days.

Laboratory tests showed the liquor contained a “high concentration” of methanol used “as an additive to liquid fuels,” according to another Jalisco health official, Denis Santiago

“This chemical agent is for industrial use,” he said.

Court remands cop who allegedly shot dead Rivers policewoman [photo]

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Tuesday, remanded a police sergeant, Bitrus Hosea, who allegedly shot dead a policewoman on duty in a correctional facility.

The policewoman, Lovender Elekwechi, also a sergeant, was allegedly shot in the head by Hosea at the Eneka Market roundabout in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state last Thursday.

The police said the offence was punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, claiming that he was not aware of the place called the Eneka roundabout, where the said incident was alleged to have occurred.

He said although he had served in Rivers State for almost three years, he was not familiar with the names of places he had visited in the course of his duty.

Hosea stated, “I am from Taraba State; I have served in Rivers State for almost three years. I am not familiar with the Eneka roundabout, I believe we passed through that place, but I am not sure of the name of the places we have worked.

“When we were on Eliozu Road, the fuel in our Hilux van was exhausted; while we parked there, another Hilux van came and parked in front of our van. Some persons in mufti started pointing at me that I was the one, who shot the policewoman; they started beating me and tried to snatch my rifle.

“But I refused to let go of my rifle, because I did not know them. One of them even cut me on my head with a machete and I fell down and lost my two phones. The Divisional Police Officer came and took away my rifle and said I had 15 rounds of ammunition left in it, but I told him that 29 rounds of ammunition were in the gun.

“The next thing I saw was my picture everywhere on the social media that I was the one who killed the female police sergeant.”

The Chief Magistrate, Ipalibo Iyiabo, remanded the accused person in a correctional facility and transferred the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice as the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

Iyiabo adjourned the matter till Tuesday, May 26, 2020, for mention.

Drama as Customs rejects 1,800 bags of rice returned by Oyo

A drama played out between the officials of the Oyo State Government and men of the Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, Ibadan, on Wednesday as the Customs rejected the 1,800 bags of rice donated to the state by the Federal Government.

The officials of the Oyo State Government, led by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Jacob Ojemuyiwa, were denied entry at the main gate of the NIS zonal headquarters in Ibadan.

Recall that Dr Debo Akande, a Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde, on Friday alleged that the rice was not good for human consumption.

The delegation was told on Wednesday to return the bags to the state government.

While addressing journalists, the commissioner said, “The state had written a letter to the Nigeria Customs Service indicating that the bags of the weevil-infested rice would be returned.”

The commissioner said the team would report back to the State Executive Council for necessary steps.

An official of NIS, who under condition of anonymity, said the delegate was turned back because the command had not received any directive to receive the rejected bags of rice.

Cases of mysterious coronavirus-related illness emerge in at least six countries

This week, a mysterious coronavirus-related illness hit the headlines, after doctors were urgently alerted about a rise of cases in children.

At least 12 British children are thought to have been hit by the illness, which is being described as an ‘inflammatory syndrome’, similar to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.

Now reports of similar cases are flooding in from around the world, suggesting that the illness may now be widespread.

Doctors have now reported a total of almost 100 cases in the UK, the US, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.

The first reports were in the UK, where there are believed to be at least 12 cases.

Meanwhile, France’s health minister, Olivier Veran, revealed this week that the illness has been seen in ‘about 15 children of all ages.’

Speaking to Franceinfo, Mr Veran also confirmed that cases have been reported in Spain, Italy and Switzerland, listing fever, digestive issues and vascular inflammation as key symptoms.

In the US, at least three children are being treated for a similar illness.

While little is known about the illness, it’s believed to have three key symptoms, and is similar to Kawasaki Disease and toxic shock syndrome.

Nigeria’s population challenging to COVID-19 battle - Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says Nigeria’s massive population constitutes a challenge in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

The vice president, however, said that the advantage of being able to manage the issues in smaller measures through the states by developing best practices had enabled authorities to reassess responses across sub-national and adjust where necessary.

Osinbajo said this on Wednesday at a virtual conference entitled “How Africa’s Informal Sector Reacts to COVID-19”, organized by Africa.com.

He was joined at the conference by President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana; Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna; Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak, Professor of Economics, Yale University; and Amandla Ooko-Ombaka, Senior Engagement Manager, McKinsey & Co. Mr Hakeem Bello-Osagie, a Harvard Business School Senior Lecturer of Business Administration, and Teresa Clarke, CEO of Africa.com, moderated the discussions with participation by several thousand who signed in across the world.

The vice president, in his contribution, said the provision of support to small businesses in the informal sector should be a priority for all economies aiming at lessening any adverse effect of the pandemic on the economy.

“But of course, by the very nature of this pandemic, it also means that you run the risk of everything going south if some state isn’t doing as well as it ought to.

“I think, in the end, we have that advantage that we are able to almost isolate responses, and even look at best practices across the various states and try and ramp up wherever we find that there are deficiencies,” Osinbajo said, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Laolu Akande.

Zamfara Governor, Bello Matawalle under fire for buying ‘exotic’ cars for commissioners

Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara is under intense fire for purchasing and distributing exotic cars to commissioners in his cabinet despite the challenges of the new coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state is criticising the state government, describing the purchase of the cars as a misplacement of priority.

Matawalle had on Friday distributed cars to 19 commissioners in the state, the Director-General Media, Public Enlightenment and Communication, Yusuf Idris, told Daily Trust.

Though he didn’t give the exact cost of the vehicles, the DG said the ones given to the executive council members were similar to those distributed to the state lawmakers.

However, the vice-chairman of the APC in the state, Alhaji Sani Gwamna Mayanchi, faulted the expenditure, saying the money should have been channelled towards addressing some of the challenges facing the state.

“The state is grappling with coronavirus pandemic, we recorded some cases recently. Instead of buying fancy cars for commissioners, the money should have been channelled to easing the untold hardships and sufferings of the people of the state.

“This is not the right time for luxury and unnecessary spending of public funds. People are in serious hardship which was precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is high time the government considered giving palliatives to its people.

“Last year by this time, shortly before we vacated office, former governor Abdulaziz Yari’s administration had assisted about 45,000 less-privileged persons, most of them orphans, who can’t feed or clothe themselves,” he said.

The party alleged that the 19 cars cost the state government N570 million.

“Each of the cars costs close to N30 million. You can imagine the impact these funds would have on the less privileged in this state.

“Putting smiles on the faces of the less privileged should be the top priority of any serious government. This is because those in power should see themselves as servants to those they govern,” Mayanchi added.

Florida man arrested with 2 pounds of fentanyl... enough to kill 500,000 people [photos]

A Florida man was arrested with enough of the narcotic fentanyl to kill half a million people, cops disclosed.

David Gayle, 43, was arrested for dealing drugs -- including two charges stemming from warrants for selling heroin within 1,000 feet of a church -- when detectives with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant April 24 for his Brooksville home.

Investigators discovered more than two pounds of the synthetic drug fentanyl and methamphetamine, a mixture sometimes called a “goofball.”

This amount of fentanyl can “potentially” kill 500,000 people, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

“We can never measure what we prevent, but it is a very good bet that this quantity of fentanyl would have resulted in a number of overdose deaths right here in Hernando County,” said Sheriff Al Nienhuis in the release.

Cops also found more than almost seven grams of cocaine, a gram of oxycodone and 13 grams of hashish -- as well as some marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Gayle was charged one count of trafficking fentanyl and one count of trafficking methamphetamine as well as separate counts of possession for each of the other drugs found.

Jail records show Gayle has an extensive criminal background in Hernando County, mostly for cocaine possession, since 2011.

He was being held Tuesday in the Hernando County jail in lieu of a $215,000 bond and faces life in prison if convicted.

Sisters who were pregnant together introduce babies through a window in lockdown

When Jade Ullrich, 29, and her sister Georgia, 26, found out they would experience pregnancy together at the same time, and that their due dates were just two days apart, it ‘felt like a dream come true’.

But then the coronavirus pandemic hit, and visions of shared pregnancy photoshoots and celebrations fell apart.

The sisters were forced to isolate separately. When their babies finally arrived, they were introduced through a window.

Jade, who runs Bay Holiday Home Management with her fiancé Michael, tells Metro.co.uk: ‘It’s my sisters first child so I really wanted to experience it closely with her, with antenatal classes and baby shopping trips.

‘We were waiting for the third trimester to organise a shopping trip to Exeter and book in a sisters bump photoshoot, which we never got to do.

After finding out they were both expecting in August 2019, both Georgia and Jade saw out their final weeks of pregnancy in lockdown.

Preparing to give birth in a pandemic was tough.

‘Beyond not making the memories we’d hoped for, I suffered terribly with anxiety around our planned home birth,’ Jade tells us. ‘As new guidelines were being published about pregnant women and their vulnerability to coronavirus and new restrictions were being placed upon expectant parents in hospitals, I began to wonder whether any of those changes would affect us, as well as desperately wanting to avoid the hospital all together even for scans, check ups and feeling anxious about ending up in hospital without my fiancé as my support.’

The anxiety was especially difficult for Jade, who had already gone through the trauma of experiencing bleeding and contractions early on in her pregnancy.

The fear of harm coming to her child was overwhelming.

‘In the first trimester, while we were celebrating my partner’s birthday I suddenly suffered a bleed with contractions,’ says Jade. ‘I was taken to hospital by ambulance and given morphine for the pain.

‘We were devastated when the consultants began to discuss the possibility of me having a miscarriage.

‘As I started to come to terms with the reality that I may have been miscarrying, I began to wonder how I’d cope watching my sister flourish through her pregnancy and birth my niece that would have been the same age as our new baby.

‘Finally, we got our scan, every doctor and consultant had been convinced that we were miscarrying with one even saying “It’ll be a miracle if this pregnancy continues” when I asked for their professional opinion on my symptoms.

‘Before we entered the scanning suite, Michael embraced me as he told me he was sure everything was going to be okay, we’d get our miracle.

‘Our lives changed in the space of five minutes, we opted to see the monitoring screen as they began to scan me and immediately we saw a heartbeat and both burst into tears of joy.

‘After the most stressful three days of our lives with little sign of hope, our little miracle was still with us.’

After months of worry, Jade welcomed Honey shortly after midnight on 21 April 2020, just weeks after the arrival of Georgia’s daughter on 3 April.

Georgia had planned for a hospital birth and was induced on 3 April. She was told on arrival at the hospital that new coronavirus guidelines prevented her partner, Dave, from joining her in the room.

He was able to return once Georgia was fully in labour and Jade provided additional support over FaceTime. Just a few hours later baby Scarlett arrived.

Jade was lucky to be able to stick to her plans of an at-home water birth despite the pandemic, and gave birth to her baby girl with just Michael and their midwife by her side.

Unfortunately the mum-of-three suffered from retained placenta after the four-hour labour, and had be taken to the hospital by an ambulance for treatment – but Jade calls this ‘a small price to pay for a happy healthy baby and a magical waterbirthing experience’.

Now the sisters are both adjusting to life as mothers to newborns in lockdown.

Seeing each other’s daughters for the first time had to take place through a window due to social distancing measures, with the sisters catching up from a two-metre distance in the garden.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday said all schools, churches, mosques and entertainment centres, such as event centres, bars, nigh clubs and others will remain shut to check the spread of Coronavirus.

He said while some businesses and others resume gradually on Monday, those mentioned would remain closed till further notice.

The governor spoke at a news briefing to give update on Coronavirus in Lagos. The event was held in Marina, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

“All Schools and institutions at primary, secondary and tertiary levels remain physically closed. Students are expected to continue learning on the alternative online and media channels announced by the various institutions of learning.

“All places of worship (both formal and informal) are to remain closed from any form of congregational services or assemblage, until further notice.

“Swimming Pools, Gyms, Barber-shops, Spas, Beauty Salons, and all Public Parks, including those in private and residential estates, will continue to remain closed for another two weeks in the instance; at which point we will review and advise on the permissible opening date for these establishments.

“Residents’ Associations should please enjoin their members as well as operators of businesses within their association to adhere to these directives,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu added that all elderly persons, as well as all persons with underlying or pre-existing health conditions, were encouraged to stay indoors as much as is practicable; and request the assistance of those not in the vulnerable or elderly category to procure essential items needed.

How this drug Remdesivir is curing COVID-19, Trump wants it approved immediately

An experimental drug has proved effective against the new coronavirus in a major study, shortening the time it takes for patients to recover by four days on average, U.S. government and company officials announced Wednesday.

Gilead Sciences’ drug, Remdesivir is the first treatment to pass such a strict test against the virus, which has killed more than 218,000 people since it emerged late last year in China. Having a treatment could have a profound effect on the global pandemic.

The study, run by the National Institutes of Health, tested Remdesivir versus usual care in 1,063 hospitalized coronavirus patients around the world. At the White House, NIH's Dr. Anthony Fauci said the drug reduced the time it takes patients to recover by 31% — 11 days on average versus 15 days for those just given usual care.

He also said there was a trend toward fewer deaths among those on Remdesivir.

President Donald Trump has therefore called on the US Food and Drug Administration to move "as quickly as they can" to approve Remdesivir as a treatment for the dreaded coronavirus.

FG Requests ex-President Jonathan, Diezani’s Bank Statements

The federal government has requested for the account statements of some former public office holders to 10 banks.

Bloomberg reports that the public officers include former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience; former ministers of petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke and Rilwanu Lukman.

Nigeria is requesting “all documents concerning any transactions to, from, or for the benefit” of Jonathan and his wife between 2009 and the present day.

The banks listed include Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and New York branches of Deutsche Bank AG and United Bank for Africa Plc.

Court documents quote Abubakar Malami, the attorney-general of the federation, as saying information contained in the document will help an ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to know individuals in the Process & Industrial Developments Ltd gas deal.

Although Malami the attorney general didn’t mention Jonathan as a subject of the EFCC probe, the former head of state appears alongside the ex-ministers in Nigeria’s proposed subpoenas.

“There is good reason to believe that ministers at the highest level were involved in a corrupt scheme to steal money from Nigeria,” Attorney General Abubakar Malami said in court filings submitted on March 24.

He said P&ID had no ability or intention of ever performing the contract, which required the company to build a gas processing plant and the government to supply gas.

Lorna Schofield, a US district judge, gave Nigeria permission to send copies of its application to the banks, eight of which had been served by April 15. However, the court has not decided whether to give Nigeria access to the documents.

In the court filings, Nigeria said the EFCC has not found direct evidence that the public officers received payments from P&ID or its affiliates.

It said the 10 banks are “likely to have processed US dollar transactions connected to P&ID’s operations as either correspondent banks or the New York branches of foreign lenders”.

Nigeria hopes to overturn a $9.7 billion judgement awarded against it for a breach of agreement in a gas project.

A spokesman for P&ID said Malami’s application is “nothing but an absurdly overbroad fishing expedition” arguing that the AGF manufactured a claim of fraud and bribery to avoid paying the judgement debt that amounts to about 30% of the country’s foreign reserves.

I have no accounts or property abroad - Goodluck Jonathan

A former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, has again said that he has no account or property abroad.

Mr Jonathan said this in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement, signed by Ikechukwu Eze, spokesman to Mr Jonathan, was issued in response to moves by the Nigerian government to subpoena bank records purportedly belonging to Mr Jonathan and his wife, Patience.

“Our attention has been drawn to international media reports to the effect that the Federal Government of Nigeria has subpoenaed bank records for former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan in the United States of America,” Mr Eze said.

“We aver that the Federal Government of Nigeria did not contact Dr. Jonathan or his wife before issuing these subpoenas. If they had, we would have advised them of the fact that you cannot subpoena what does not exist.

“We also remind the public that on March 5, 2014, during the swearing in of new ministers, then President Jonathan said “I am loyal to Nigeria’s economy. I don’t have accounts or property abroad.”

The statement said that between the period Mr Jonathan made claims of not operating foreign account and now, nothing has changed with regards to the former president.
