INEC Under Pressure To Return "Buhari's Sister" Amina Zakari To Head Operations?

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is under pressure from some strong political players in the Presidency to return the National Commissioner on Health and Welfare, Mrs Amina Zakari, to her former operations beat from where she was posted last week by the National Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
There are allegations that she's used that office to help APC.

The Presidency also said yesterday that it was seeking the understanding of the National Assembly over the funding of INEC’s budget for the general elections billed for the first quarter of 2019, saying it would not confront the federal legislature over its virement of funds from the Special Intervention Programme (SIP) estimates instead of the National Assembly’s projects votes as requested by President Muhammadu Buhari.

THISDAY sources said at the weekend that INEC had come under intense pressure to return Zakari, a relation of Buhari to operations, which is the engine room of election management of the commission.

Zakari and four other national commissioners had reshuffled by Yakubu last week after leaders of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Senate President Bukola Saraki, marched on INEC and Police Headquarters, protesting the handling of the governorship election in Osun State last month.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, had defeated the PDP’s Senator Ademola Adeleke after a controversial run-off that international and local observers carpeted for what they called undue interference by security forces.

Zakari, who had been variously accused of skewing election processes in favour of the ruling APC, obviously on account of her relationship with Buhari, was particularly accused by the PDP of turning the tables against it in Osun State.

The INEC National Commissioner in charge of Osun, Oyo and Ogun States, Mr. Adedeji Soyebi, also got caught up in the web of the protest and was posted to the commission’s electoral institute.

But THISDAY was told that the presidency had been uncomfortable with the postings, coming few months to the general elections and want them reversed.

Sources however said that INEC National Chairman, Yakubu, is resisting the pressure but wondered how long he would hold his ground

We'll Support PDP in 2019 Because of Peter Obi - Ndigbo Youths assure Atiku

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youths (Worldwide) has commended the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubaka, for choosing an Igbo son as the vice presidential candidate for the 2019 general elections.

The commendation was given through
a statement issued in Owerri on Sunday by its Acting National President, Dr. Kingsley Dozie; and Emeka Odom, its Assistant National Legal Adviser.

It said that assistance of Igbo youths would be made available to the PDP, having chosen Dr. Peter Obi as its presidential running mate.

The group said it had already started discussing and liaising with youths of other ethnic nationalities on how to have a productive and people-oriented election.

“To restructure Nigeria is our priority now and we’ll get it right this time.

“The choice of the former governor, Peter Obi, is great. He was not wasteful in the management of resources while serving as governor.

“Peter Obi is a good choice. He will bring business intelligence into governance.

“He is not corrupt and as a governor, he was not wasteful. Igbo youths are very happy .

“Obi’s success story as a businessman would help in reviving the nation’s economy, if elected in 2019.

“The decision to pick him, we believe, is based on his outstanding performance as governor of Anambra State,” it said.

The group said that as a successful businessman, it expected Obi to translate his wealth of experience into good governance for the nation.

Falana, Others To Buhari: Withdraw That Travel Ban Order

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to withdraw the travel ban imposed on 50 high profile criminal suspects under Executive Order 6 (EO6).

Falana, in a statement titled: “Allow the courts to impose travel ban on suspected looters”, said only the courts could impose travel ban on the suspected high profile persons”.

He argued that since the power of the anti-graft agencies and the courts to place criminal suspects on watch list or subject their passports to temporary seizure has never been in doubt, “the directive to place the 50 high profile suspected persons on watch list and restrict their movement is highly superfluous, completely unwarranted and totally uncalled for”.

The rights lawyer said the travel ban “is an ingenious design to expose the Buhari administration to ridicule”.

Falana added that since the high-profile suspects covered by EO6 had been placed on a watch list and their passports seized by either the anti-graft agencies or the courts, the travel ban slammed on them by President Buhari ought to be withdrawn without any delay.

Falana said the travel ban was a sad reminder of the placement of political opponents on security watch list and seizure of their passports by the defunct military junta.

He noted that a Federal High Court last week upheld the constitutional validity of the Executive Order 6 (EO6) issued by Buhari on July 5.

The lawyer added that the government, acting on the ruling, directed the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies to place no fewer than 50 high-profile persons directly affected by EO6 on watch-list and restrict them from leaving the country pending the final determination of their cases.

He said even though the names of the “50 high profile persons” have not been published by the Federal Government, they are presumed to be either standing trial in the various high courts or being investigated for corrupt practices by the anti-graft agencies.

“If the Federal Government had done some background checks, it would have discovered that the names of the 50 VIPs have long been placed on a security watch list while their passports have been impounded by the anti-graft agencies or the courts as one of the conditions for admitting them to bail.

“It is public knowledge that whenever the defendants wish to travel abroad for medical treatment, they usually apply for the interim release of their passports.

“Since the courts have taken judicial notice of the perilous state of medical facilities in the country, such applications are usually granted. And once the suspects return from the foreign medical trips, their passports are returned to the registry of the trial courts,” he explained.

Falana, however, regretted that indigent accused persons standing trial for stealing, fraud or other economic crimes are not entitled to such a privilege because they have no money to acquire passports not to talk of paying for foreign trips and medical treatment abroad.

Notwithstanding such judicial indictment of politically exposed persons seeking medical treatment during trial, he contended that the law has not authorised the executive to restrict the movement of criminal suspects.

He counselled the Buhari administration to wage the war against corruption within the ambit of the rule of law.

SERAP, in a statement, said Executive Order 6 (EO6) banning 50 alleged high-profile corrupt Nigerians from travelling abroad was illegal and repressive.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary Akinloye Oyemiyi, the ANN said: ”We know that Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution as amended legally guarantees the right to freedom of movement to all Nigerians and this right can only be tampered with by established laws as enshrined in the Section 45 of the same constitution and not by any draconian executive order targeted at political opponents by a president that is scared of electoral defeat.”

Suspected Robber Arrested 5 Days After Release From Prison

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a robbery suspect five days after he was released from the Ikoyi Prison.

The suspect, Tunde Okunola was reportedly arrested in
Marwa Roundabout, Lekki, along with an accomplice, Segun Adigun, 27, while trying to rob one Gift Omini around 4.45am on Wednesday.

It was learnt that while Okunola, 26, and Adigun were arrested in the morning, another gang members operating on a motorcycle, Raimi fatai (16) and Yusuph Balogun (22) were arrested later on Wednesday in the National Stadium area, Surulere, after snatching a handbag from a lady.

Okunola, who was released from the Ikoyi Prison on Friday October 5, 2018, was arrested on Wednesday after robbing Omini of her mobile phone while on a motorcycle.

Okunola told the police that he had spent six months and two weeks in the Ikoyi Prison, adding that he was nabbed by RRS men five days after his freedom.

The suspect said, “I am a trained barber; I was looking for money for my freedom so that I can have my own shop. If I am released, I will never step into Lagos again.”

The victim, Omini, told the police that the suspects who were riding a motorcycle used a short axe to dispossess her of a mobile phone.

“My shout for help, however, attracted the attention of RRS officers at the roundabout and they arrested them,” she added.

The Surulere suspects, Fatai and Balogun, also told the police that they were trying to raise money for freedom after undergoing training as barbers.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the police would not allow criminality in the state.

He added that the command was aware that some criminals wanted to seize the opportunity of the coming festive period to engage in crime.

“The police in Lagos are, however, leaving no stone unturned to make the state unconducive for criminals,” he added.

Leaked Video Of Governor 'Receiving Bribe': Kano Govt. Reacts

Kano state government has denied allegations in a video footage portraying Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje involved in an inappropriate conduct - receiving bribe in millions of Dollars and smiling.

In a statement signed by the state Commissioner of Information, Youths and Culture, Malam Muhammad Garba, the government said, “the Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice is challenging the implausible and eccentric posting of the cloned video that went viral in a court of law considering the gravity of the caricature, which indicates the extent to which mischievous elements can go to discredit public figures by wielding non-existent scandals against them.

"A mere observation of the cloned video clearly shows that the video is doctored and disjointed with no material facts or evidence to prove the allegations, other than a callous attempt to tarnish the hard earned image of the office and the person of the Governor.

“The Governor of Kano State wishes to once again emphatically debunk the allegation of receiving gratification of $5Million or any amount whatsoever from any person or body.

”It is important to draw the attention of the general public to the fact that the alleger is a serial blackmailer and extorter. We are also aware that the hidden motive is to reduce the popularity of the Governor and consequently affect the anticipated quantum of APC votes from Kano in the 2019 general elections.

“While the state government is taking the legal action, we wish to assure the good people of Kano that His Excellency will remain focus and continue with laudable programmes that will add value to the lives of the people of Kano State. We also call on the general public, especially members of the APC to remain calm and always be law abiding.”

Buhari’ll Win South-East Despite Obi’s Nomination – Okorocha's Son-in-Law

The factional governorship candidate of the APC in Imo State, Uche Nwosu, has said President Muhammadu Buhari would win massive votes in the South-East in 2019 despite the decision of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to pick an Igbo man, Peter Obi as his running mate.

Nwosu, who spoke to newsmen in Owerri, said the nomination of a former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, as Atiku’s running mate would make no impact.

Describing Obi’s nomination as a Greek gift to Ndigbo, the Imo APC governorship candidate said that the people of the zone should wait till 2023 to produce the President rather than accepting  "a vice presidential slot which is more of a spare tyre.”

Nwosu said, “I don’t think that the nomination of the PDP presidential running mate from the South-East will affect anything, because President Muhammadu Buhari has made a landmark decision, I call him a man of his word.

“One thing is sure and that is President Buhari cannot be compared to Atiku Abubakar. President Buhari is a man of integrity and remember that the country was almost gone before he came in and since he came in, you can see that every part of our economy is doing well and our integrity abroad has been restored now.

“President Buhari remains the best for the Ndigbo and the country. The Ndigbo will wait till 2023 to produce the President after Buhari has served out his second term than this vice-presidential slot to the South-East.

“Anybody from the South-East who is supporting Atiku is making a very big mistake. We cannot afford to wait for another eight years to have an Igbo man as President, I think it is a carrot that is being dangled before the Ndigbo but we must reject it.

“We cannot wait for another eight years. We prefer to vote for President Buhari and in the next four years, power will return to the South-East. So the issue of Vice-President cannot bring anything to the South-East.

“You cannot compare a Vice-President to a President. So, the issue of bringing Peter Obi is to deceive the Ndigbo again and make them continue the waiting game all over again. What we are asking for as the Ndigbo is a President, not Vice-President, that is not what we need.

“When President Buhari finishes in 2023, it will be the turn of the Ndigbo, so no Igbo man that is deep in politics, will think of supporting Atiku Abubakar, who will want to stay for another eight years, no that is not acceptable. So we shall vote for Buhari en masse to ensure that the Ndigbo will only have to wait for four years.”

Nwosu also dismissed insinuations that the APC might have been weakened by the crisis arising from the just-concluded primaries.

Truck Driver Loses Control, Crushes Married Woman To Death

A married woman, Comfort Adeyemi, has been killed by a truck in the Arepo area of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in a fatal accident.

It was gathered that the deceased had travelled from Ado-Ekiti to meet her husband in Lagos before her car developed a mechanical fault on the expressway.

The accident, which occurred around 11am on Sunday, involved a truck marked, LAGOS 199 XH, whose driver allegedly lost control before the tragedy struck.

The deceased’s driver, Taiwo Adeola, said the vehicle had been repaired adding that they were about leaving the area when the trailer rammed into the car while its container landed on the woman.

The 26-year-old said, “I was the one that drove from Ado-Ekiti to this place. I parked the car by the roadside because it developed a fault. We were done repairing the car and about to leave when the trailer lost control.

“She was the one calling people’s attention to the truck, telling them to run for safety. I was in front of the bonnet and I quickly ran; she wanted to escape through the back of the car before the trailer hit the car and the container fell on her and the car.”

An eyewitness, Oluwasegun Tejuoso, told The Punch that the truck had initially hit a car before it hit the woman and killed her.

The Ogun State indigene said, “The truck came from nowhere and hit a Toyota Camry, but the driver quickly drove into the NNPC filling station at Arepo.

“The truck ran into a ditch close to where the woman parked her car. It was at that point that the container fell on her and her car.”

The husband of the deceased, Omojobola, who said he was in Lagos for an official assignment added that he had advised his wife to park somewhere to fix the car when she informed him that the car had developed a fault.

The naval officer said, “Actually, I was not with the vehicle; my wife was coming to Lagos. She was to come on Friday; but when I told her that I would be coming to Lagos on Saturday with my colleagues for an official assignment, she said she would rather make the journey today.

“This morning, immediately she took off from Ekiti around 7.30am, she called me that they were on their way. Around 10.30am, she called me that the car had developed a fault. I told them to park it somewhere; they were close to Lagos already, they were coming to Sparklight Estate. However, my brother who drove the car called me that a trailer ran over my wife as she was standing near the vehicle. I don’t know what to do.”

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Adesina Tiyamiyu, said the agency responded immediately it was alerted, adding that the woman’s corpse was recovered from the scene of the accident.

Go To Court If You Like - Presidency tells critics of Travel Ban

The Muhammadu Buhari-led Presidency on Sunday advised those who are opposed to the decision of the Federal Government to place about 50 Nigerians being investigated for corruption on travel ban to go to court.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this in an interview with our correspondent.

Shehu was reacting to the criticisms that trailed a statement issued on Saturday that the government had put the prominent Nigerians on a watch list in its resolve to fully implement the Executive Order 6 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari in July.

Apart from the travel ban, the presidential spokesman had also indicated that financial transactions of the affected persons were being monitored by relevant agencies to ensure that the assets in question were not dissipated and that such persons did not interfere with the investigation and litigation processes.

Shehu told The Punch on Sunday that those who felt the government’s decision was wrong were at liberty to approach the court.

He assured Nigerians that the present administration would not abandon the anti-corruption fight, which he said had been attracting accolades to the government both locally and from abroad.

He said, “Those who are opposed to this government’s position know what they can do. They should go to court.

“There is nobody under any illusion as far as the present administration’s anti-corruption war is concerned.

“Let it be known to all that this government will not abandon this ongoing fight against corruption because of such criticisms.

“The fight is attracting commendation both locally and from abroad. This government can only continue to intensify efforts.”

On the names of those being reported in the media as being among the 50 persons affected by the travel ban, Shehu said the government had not released any list.

Accept Peter Obi as Atiku’s VP, Jonathan tells Igbo PDP leaders

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has pleaded with South-East leaders to accept the decision of Atiku Abubakar to choose Peter Obi as his running mate for the 2019 election.

There have been protests from some South-East PDP leaders over the choice of Obi as Atiku’s running mate. They complained of not being consulted.

PDP governors and leaders met on Saturday and decided that,
they would meet with Atiku over the matter. Reacting to the development on Sunday, Jonathan said a presidential candidate had a right to pick a running mate of their choice.

He said Atiku’s decision does not require “regional review and approval.”

A statement signed by Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan’s media aide, read, “I want to directly appeal to my brothers and sisters from the South-East zone who are members of our party to reconsider their position and allow the presidential candidate of our party to select a candidate he thinks he can work with to be able to achieve the party’s development goals. Since Atiku has nominated Mr Peter Obi as his running mate, I am pleading with my party members from the zone to accept his choice.”

Earlier, the statement had quoted Jonathan as saying,

“The task before us is to build on this firm foundation and momentum by pulling in one direction and working assiduously for the victory of these candidates at the polls.

“It is against this backdrop that I appeal for calm and understanding in the South-East where my attention has been drawn to the fact that some leaders of our party are openly expressing their discomfort with the reported nomination of former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, as Atiku’s running mate. I am told that some of our leaders in the zone have raised issues with the process of consultation that produced the Vice Presidential candidate.

“I affirm that consultation is a key ingredient in every political process. Nonetheless, in the selection of a vice presidential candidate, a presidential candidate is allowed reasonable freedom to select his running mate based on loyalty, trust, experience, temperament and capacity to perform the responsibilities of the office. Anything other than this could create tension and acrimony between the presidential candidate and his running mate, even before the inauguration of the government.”

Mother Breaks Her Son’s Head Over N50 Meal In Lagos (Pics)

A boy was seriously injured by his own mother for refusing to eat ‘fufu’ (a cassava meal). The woman, simply identified as Mrs. Celestine, hit her son, Tochukwu, until blood gushed out of his head.

It was gathered that neighbours, who intervened had accused the woman of always venting her frustration on her children.

The incident occurred last week at Ijeshatedo in Surulere, Lagos.

The boy, who confirmed that he and his siblings usually suffered physical abuses from their mother, however, pleaded that she should not be arrested.

It was scooped that there was a night Mrs. Celestine beat up one of her children until he bled from ears.

Some neighbours reported the incident at the police station and Mrs. Celestine was arrested. She was later released after serious cautioned.

Buhari Excluded Omisore, Obanikoro From Travel Ban List?

Funny corruption fight going on in Nigeria today. The Yoruba Youth Socio-cultural Association has flayed President Muhammadu Buhari for excluding Iyiola Omisore and Musliu Obanikoro from the list of allegedly corrupt personalities affected by the travel ban imposed by the administration.

The group, in a statement in Osogbo on Sunday by the President, Mr. Olalekan Hammed; and Secretary, Olawale Ajao, said the exclusion of these two politicians from the ban was a further confirmation that Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade was selective and one-sided.
The Yoruba youths expressed dismay at the exclusion of the two politicians who they said were accused of corruption.

The statement read, “The anti-graft war embarked upon by President Muhammadu Buhari since the inception is nothing but a weapon to fight opposition parties and critics.

“In 2015 when President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office, there were reactions from different angles that his anti-corruption war was aimed at targeting only the perceived enemies of government.

“The Presidency denied the allegation, and argued that no matter the parties they belong, all the corrupt people would be dealt with decisively.

“To our dismay, Obanikoro and Omisore, who have been charged with corruption, suddenly became saints as soon as they joined the All Progressives Congress.
“It is saddening to know that the names of the duo were not included in the so-called Executive Order 06 signed by Buhari and banning high profile public officials from overseas travel.

“His action affirmed the fact that the current anti-graft war is deceptive. There should be justice and fairness in the corrupt fight.”

It will be recalled that Obanikoro, who was accused of corruption while in the Peoples Democratic Party, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress. Omisore, on his part, joined forces with APC in Osun state.

Fayose Ends Tenure In Tears, Heads To Abuja To Face EFCC

The end of a journey. The beginning of another. Ayo Fayose bade a tearful farewell to the people of Ekiti state as his tenure finally ended on Sunday.

He could not control his emotion as he was about to depart the state for Akure Airport to catch a flight to Abuja, where he will battle the EFCC

Fayose shed tears shortly after a thanksgiving service held in his honour at the Government House Chapel on Sunday.

As the thanksgiving service ended at about 11.00 am, tears had welled up in the eyes of the governor as he was about to enter his white Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

The wife of the governor, Mrs. Feyisetan Fayose, who noticed that her husband was shedding tears, moved closer to him as said “please take heart, please take heart.”

After the tears stopped, Fayose bade his wife, few aides and other admirersbye-bye as the convoy headed for Akure.

Throughout the service, Fayose was in pensive mood and his voice was laden with emotion as he addressed the congregation.

The outgoing governor said he was leaving the state number one seat a contented and fulfilled man.

Fayose said: “I’m contented, I’m happy and I say thank you. Don’t be disparaged, don’t worry about me, I will come back. I will rise to the glory of God. I have enjoyed uncommon grace; I will never complain but thank God.”

Apparently referring to the former Speaker, Kola Oluwawole, who was removed by 14 lawmakers on Thursday, Fayose urged him (Oluwawole) to take his sack in good faith.

Fayose said: “I don’t want you to trouble your mind, there won’t be testimonies without battles. Go and concede defeat in the overall interest of Ekiti. You were removed illegally but let God fight for you.”

Mrs. Fayose assured that her husband would come back to Ekiti a triumphant man.

She said: “We are coming back, I don’t know how but I have 200 percent assurances.”

In his sermon entitled, “Affliction shall not rise the second time,” the Chaplain of Government House, Pastor Seyi Olusola, said a man must be ready to face affliction, if he must rise.

“Don’t allow anything to trouble your mind, always come to God.”
