Beyonce's Father Says He Cancelled A Collaboration With R.Kelly For Destiny Child Due To His Reputation

Beyonce's father Mathew Knowles says he passed on using R. Kelly for a 1998 collaboration with Destiny’s Child due to both business differences with the singer and his reputation.

The 67-year-old tells Metro.co.uk that when he and the group met with the singer, the girls were around 15 or 16-years-old.

'I was there, and my former wife Tina was there,' the music manager said. 'When they went to the bathroom, Tina would go with them. They did not leave our eyes.'

Knowles told the outlet in detail about the environment in which R. Kelly immersed himself as he worked.

'The thing with R. Kelly was, he liked to record late at night, around midnight,' he said. 'And what was different with his studio was that one room had a recording suite, and next door was a club, with 40 or 50 people dancing.'

Knowles said he passed on a collaboration between a then established R. Kelly who had hits such as  1993's Bump N’ Grind and 1996's I Believe I Can Fly to his name, to his up-and-coming group due to both business and creative differences.

'I personally rejected the song, because I didn't think it was a good song,' he said of the track, which would have been on the group's self-titled debut album, which featured Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and then-members LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. 'Not just because of [his] reputation this was around 1998, we had just begun to hear some of those things.'

Andy Murray Announces Retirement In Tear-Jerking Press Conference

Still struggling with a hip injury that has limited him since June 2016, Andy Murray announced Friday that he would retire after this year’s Wimbledon -- if not sooner.

Murray said that his decision to end his playing career this year had come during his off-season training in December.

“I spoke to my team, and I told them, ‘I cannot keep doing this,’” Murray said in an emotional news conference in Melbourne. “I needed to have an end point because I was sort of playing with no idea when the pain was going to stop. I felt like making that decision.

“I said to my team, ‘Look, I think I can get through this until Wimbledon.’ That’s where I would like to stop playing. But I am also not certain I am able to do that.”

Murray, 31, became the first British male singles champion at a Grand Slam tournament in 76 years when he won the United States Open in 2012. He won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016 and won Olympic gold medals in singles in 2012 and 2016. Murray reached the ATP’s No. 1 ranking for the first time at the end of the 2016 season, holding on to it through Wimbledon the next year.

Special Forces Go After Boko Haram, Kill Hundreds In Big Attack

Hundreds of insurgents have been killed in the renewed onslaught against Boko Haram terrorists in the Northeast, the military said yesterday.

The military said Special Forces troops had been unleashed on terrorists in series of clearance operations in Borno State, the epicentre of the insurgency.

According to the military, the weapons of the insurgents were confiscated in the aftermath of the raids on their locations.

The troops, made up of the Nigerian Army Special Forces, the Nigerian Navy Special Forces as well as the Nigerian Air Force Special Forces, however, lost an officer and a soldier during the clearance operations.

Army spokesman Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, who confirmed the development, said the operations, which began on December 28, last year, ensured that several towns and villages were cleared of remnants of the insurgents.

In a statement, Brig.-Gen. Usman listed the towns already cleared as Zare, Gudumbali, Kukawa and Cross Kauwa.

The troops, the statement added, have also taken control of Baga and are now clearing the fringes of Lake Chad.

He lauded the troops for their gallantry in giving the terrorists a bloody nose, saying the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole also gave maximum air support in dealing a devastating blow on the terrorists.

Brig.-Gen. Usman said in the statement: “In the determined efforts to wipe out remnants of Boko Haram terrorists that now go by the appellation of Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), the gallant troops of the newly formed Nigerian Army Special Forces Command (NASFC), Operation LAFIYA DOLE, have given the terrorists that attacked troops location in Baga a bloody nose.

“The triumphant troops, particularly the highly revered 707 Special Forces Brigade, which is the vanguard of the great exploit, dealt the decisive blow that neutralised several terrorists along that axis despite prior warning to them by some unpatriotic elements.

“The Special Forces commenced clearance operations on 28th December 2018, where they cleared Zare, Gudumbali, Kukawa and Cross Kauwa without any resistance from suspected terrorists. However, at Cross Kauwa, the unfortunate ISWAP terrorists made a costly mistake of raising their ugly heads.

“In professional fashion the troops exploited the situation to instantly and decisively neutralise the insurgents and captured some equipment.

“Though some of the terrorists attempted to infiltrate troops’ camp at Monguno, the gallant troops lured them and neutralised many of them and recovered some arms and ammunition.

“The troops who are in high spirits have since linked up with other forces in Baga where they cleared the Naval Base and the surrounding areas. Unfortunately, in the process, the Special Forces lost one officer and a soldier while five other soldiers sustained injuries. The remains of the two fallen heroes and the wounded have since been evacuated. The injured soldiers are in stable condition and receiving medical attention.

“The troops are now busy consolidating and clearing vestiges of the terrorists within the northern Borno State axis with special emphasis on the Lake Chad region.

“The Special Forces attained these great strides in close operational synergy with Air Task Force of the Nigerian Air Force who gave Intelligence and close air support by bombarding the ISWAP terrorists.

“The outstanding and dare devil exploits of the NAF’s pilots gave more courage and fire power to the troops. Similarly, the Nigerian Navy Special Forces were not left out of these gallant efforts.”

Stop Reckless Spending and Pay New Minimum Wage - Labour Tells Governors

The Nigeria Labour Congress on Thursday attacked the Nigeria Governors’ Forum for saying that there would be economic crisis in Nigeria if President Muhammadu Buhari went ahead to present an executive bill on N30,000 minimum wage to the National Assembly as demanded by organised labour.

A governor, who spoke on condition of anonymity for the NGF, had claimed that 30 states would be affected adversely by the new minimum wage, stressing that the wage should be pegged at N22, 500.

The governor had said, “Now, if the President goes ahead to send a bill that will contain N30,000 to the National Assembly without considering what we have told him, there will be crisis in the country. We will wait to see what will happen. I’m sure that the National Assembly will not pass the bill this year.”

But in an exclusive interview with The Punch in Abuja on Thursday, NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Mr Benson Upah, said the governors were not being fair to President Buhari’s intention and Nigerian workers.

According to him, the governors would do Nigeria a great favour if they cut down on their financial excesses that were not accounted for.

He reiterated the NLC position that there was evidence of governors who could pay more than N30,000 during negotiation for the new minimum wage.

Upah said,“The governors who are pushing that agenda are not being fair to Buhari, the NLC and their own people that they sought through elections to serve.

“The first thing to note is that the tripartite process that produced this N30,000 minimum wage remains unimpeachable. It is clear, transparent and cannot be subjected to another round of arguments.

“In fact, the governors should apologise to the citizens for frustrating the process up to this moment. They should be ashamed.

“We will tell them not to come to Abuja to complain, they should stay in their respective states and tell the workers that they will not pay N30,000. They should not hide under any association because it (NGF) is not recognised by the constitution. Let that governor go and address his workers.

“When on Tuesday, labour mobilised its members to all government houses on this matter, why did the governors not tell them that they cannot pay. Anyone that cannot pay must not seek re-election. I am happy Buhari also said this.”

While explaining that the new wage was not the same as having a uniform pay structure for all states in Nigeria, the NLC noted that the proposed wage was not a favour for the workers.

“What we did on Tuesday is a fraction of what labour is capable of doing. We will continue to mobilise against governors that we suspect will not fall in line with us.

“We have the number, the will and the resources to ensure that such governors will not succeed. The national minimum wage is not a favour..."

How Vote-Buying Could Affect 2019 General Election

The United States of America has warned that widespread vote-buying could mar the highly anticipated 2019 general elections in Nigeria.

The US Deputy Ambassador Jonathan Cohen, who spoke on Thursday during a United Nations Security Council meeting on West Africa, urged politicians, civil society groups and community leaders to ensure that the election was free and fair.

Cohen said, “The United States sees a risk that widespread vote-buying could challenge the integrity of the election process.

“We are concerned about reports of intimidation and partisanship by security forces, heightened insecurity and inability of internally displaced persons or persons with disabilities to vote.”

AFP reported that the UN envoy for West Africa, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, said Boko Haram attacks had increased over the past months.

He explained that during the last week of December alone, the Islamist militants staged three attacks on army bases.

Chambas said “tensions are high” in Nigeria ahead of the vote, but that prospects for peaceful elections had brightened with the signing of an accord last month in which parties pledged to support calm and order.

According to the time table released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, the presidential and parliamentary elections will hold on February 16, while the gubernatorial and state assembly elections will hold on March 2.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who in 2015 became the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president in Nigeria, is hoping to secure a second four-year term in the elections as he faces a former vice president, Atiku Abubakar.

Husband Stabs Wife To Death Over Alleged Adultery

The Niger State Police Command has apprehended one Ishaya David, 29, for allegedly killing his wife. He was arrested by police detectives attached to the Gawu Babangida Division in the Gurara Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect, who hails from Sabon Kaida village in Gurara, was said to have killed his wife, Rifkatu David, 25, over allegations of promiscuity.

It was learnt that he stabbed his wife to death for having an affair with her ex-boyfriend.

Northern City News gathered that the suspect had earlier cautioned his late wife to desist from relating with her ex-boyfriend, but she reportedly ignored the warning.

Narrating what led to the killing of Rifkatu on Thursday, Ishaya said, “I used a knife to kill her for her refusal to adhere to my instruction. I told her to desist from sleeping with men, but she boasted that nothing would happen, so, I lost my temper and stabbed her.”

He described the deceased as an unfaithful woman, who had no respect for her husband.

My wife was stubborn; she never listened to me; I even sat her down and told her the implications of what she was doing, but she did not repent and she had to pay the supreme price," he added.

The Command Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, confirmed the incident, stating that the matter had been charged to court.

Buhari Group Slams Afenifere For Endorsing Atiku

A pro-President Muhammadu Buhari group on Thursday knocked the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, for declaring support for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

The group, under the auspices of the South-West Frontiers for Buhari/Osinbajo 2019, said President Buhari had performed well and deserved second term in office.

Speaking at the end of the group’s meeting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Thursday, the Public Relations Officer of the group, Omowumi Adebayo, said Atiku was not sincere about his promise to restructure the country.

He said the PDP candidate was only deceiving Nigerians adding that the people of the South-West would not be part of the restructuring that Atiku promised.

He said, “The Afenifere is not speaking for the interest of the South-West people, they are only fighting for their pockets.

“We in Yorubaland are always in the progressive since the time of Awolowo. These people are deceiving us that they are progressives but they are not.

“They are the ones that sold out the June 12, 1993 election, won by late Chief MKO Abiola and Yoruba is known for honesty, integrity and progressivism.

“If Atiku worked with (former President Olusegun) Obasanjo for eight years and Obasanjo himself described him as being corrupt, why is the Afenifere supporting a corrupt person to be the President of this country?

“If the PDP ruled for 16 years and Atiku was the vice president for eight years out of the 16 years, the party could not restructure the country, what type of restructuring does he (Atiku) want to give this country?”

I Am Fully With APC, Omisore Declares

It was just a matter of time. Former Osun Deputy Governor Senator Iyiola Omisore yesterday declared he is backing the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming general elections.

He debunked reports he was undecided following the alliance between the APC and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) under which he contested the September 22, 2018  Osun governorship poll.

He said: “There is no rumour about where we are and where we are going. What the APC chairman in Osun State, Gboyega Famodun said was instructive and correct.

“God made relationship between me and the APC possible. Osun is one now and Ife remains the source from where all of draws our strength.

“I don’t have to tell anybody that I am with the party. Any wise person should know where I belong.”

Omisore spoke when Governor Gboyega Oyetola and his entourage, including the chairman of the APC in Osun State, Gboyega Famodun, was received at his Ife country home.

The governor proceeded to the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, in continuation of his “thank you visits across the state.

Omisore, who spoke briefly at the Ooni’s palace, said the coalition between SDP and APC was enough to “show where I stand.”

I Grew Up With That Monster: R Kelly's Daughter Voices Her Support For His Accusers

The oldest daughter of R Kelly and his ex-wife Andrea is speaking out for the first time since multiple women made accusations of rape and abuse against the accused pedophile on the Lifetime docuseries Surviving R Kelly.

In a lengthy and emotional post that was shared on her Instagram page, 20-year-old Joann Kelly explained why she has remained silent about the allegations being made about her father while showing her support for the singer's alleged victims.

'The same monster you all confronting me about is my father. I am well aware of who and what he is. I grew up in that house,' wrote Joann, who performs under the name Buku Abi.

She then explained her silence by stating: 'My choice to not speak on him and what he does is for peace of mind. My emotional state. And for MY healing.

'I had to do and move in a manner that is best for me.'

Joann's mother Andrea, who participated in the Lifetime series, filed a restraining order against her ex in 2005 following an altercation.

One year later she filed for divorce, and in 2009 the split was finalized, at which point she claims Kelly chose not to be a part of his children's lives.

'Before I start I just want it to be known that I am speaking from the heart, nothing I say or do not say is to hurt any party affected by this,' wrote Joann at the start of her post.

'I just want you all to understand that devastated is an understatement for all that  I feel currently.'

She later noted: 'I pray for all the families & woman who have been affected by my father's actions. Trust, I have been deeply affected by all of this.'

Joann went on to say that she is not fond of discussing her personal life in a public forum, but felt that she had no choice.

She explained that it 'has been years' since she or her siblings had any contact with the singer, and that they and her mother Andrea 'would never condone, support or be a part of anything negative that [Kelly] does.'

At the end of her message, she took time to thank those people who showed their support for the family during this difficult time.

Andrea said her relationship with Kelly began to disintegrate after the release of the sex tape that allegedly featured the singer and an underage girl.

Strike Continues Until FG Implements Offers- ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Thursday said the ongoing strike would not be called off until the Federal Government fully implemented all the offers it made to the union after their last meeting.

The public university lecturers said they were tired of Federal Government’s antics of making unfulfilled promises, insisting that the strike would be called off after they got tangible evidence and concrete actions that the offers made to them by the Federal Government had been implemented.

The National President, ASUU,  Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi,  in an exclusive interview with one of  Punch correspondents in Lagos on Thursday, said the team of the union that met  with the government on Tuesday did not reach any agreement with the Federal Government.

Asked when the strike would then be called off, Ogunyemi said, “Our members said they want to see evidence of satisfactory implementation of all they have proposed before the strike can be called off.”

On Tuesday, ASUU met with the Federal Government officials including the Minister of Education, Adamu  Adamu, as well as his Labour and Employment counterpart, Chris Ngige.

After their discussions, Ngige explained what the Federal Government was offering to the union.

He said the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Finance had confirmed with evidence that N15.4bn had been released to public universities.

But ASUU president recalled that last year, the government promised to release funds for the revitalisation of public universities, which was one of the demands of the union, but failed to do so.

Stabbed MC Oluomo May Be Flown Abroad

A leader of the National Union of Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo, may be flown abroad for further treatment.

A close aide of the union leader said MC Oluomo would travel any time soon as plans had been concluded for his treatment by a specialist in the United States where he is a citizen.

Politicians of different calibre were said to have visited the hospital, as security operatives screen everyone going in to see him.

MC Oluomo was among the people injured at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress campaign at the Sky Power Ground, Ikeja, on Tuesday.

The aide said, “He was stabbed in the neck and by the side with what they call makanje (poisoned knife). He is a citizen of the United States, so there cannot be any problem with his medical treatment abroad. In fact, he will be flown out in a few days for better medical care. Contrary to what they are saying, Baba (MC Oluomo) is not dead.”

Emulate Rwanda In Banning Skin-Lightening Creams, Female Drummer Ara Urges FG

Nigerian talking drum drummer, Aralola Olumuyiwa, popularly known as Ara, has called on the Federal Government to place a ban on the sale and use of skin-lightening products in the country.

Ara told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Thursday that skin-lightening soaps and other such cosmetics would always have adverse health implications on users.

She said that the decision by the Government of Rwanda to ban the products was a step in the right direction to ensure the sound health of its citizenry.

According to her, placing a ban on the sale of the products may not eradicate its use completely, but it will minimise the rate.

“This is a good development, which should be replicated in Nigeria. We have seen many people who have developed skin cancer, irritation and other ailments as a result of using skin-lightening products.

“The Federal Government should work on this and ensure that most of these products are not produced in the country and ban their importation as well. This may not eradicate their use, but it will definitely minimise it.

“People who use these dangerous products do not bear the brunt alone, as it also affects their loved ones when users begin to feel the effects of the creams or soaps,’’ she said.
