UPDATE: One Dies, Many Injured As Train Derails In Lagos

One passenger died while many others were injured on Thursday when a mass transit shuttle train derailed at the Ashade railway crossing in the Mangoro area of Lagos State.

The Lagos Railway District Manager, Jerry Ochi, told NAN that the victim died at the NRC hospital in Ebute Meta while receiving treatment.

It was gathered that the accident occurred around 7am.

The Punch learnt that three coaches were affected and that the train was en route Ebute Meta, Lagos, from Ijoko in Ogun State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, said in a statement that investigation showed that the train derailed as a result of faulty tracks.

The agency explained that the faulty tracks had been reported by men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority in the area and were noted for pending engineering works later in the day.

It said the injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for first aid.

The statement added, “Efforts are currently being made to evacuate the derailed coaches as the Nigerian Railway Corporation crane has been dispatched to the scene from the Lagos Island.

“The GM LASEMA, LRT, LRU Paramedics, LRU Fire, LASAMBUS, FRSC, RRS, LASTMA and the Nigeria Police are on ground to ensure a swift recovery. Recovery operation is ongoing by the officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.”

I Will Win The Presidential Election - Buhari Boasts

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said he was confident of victory at next month’s presidential election, despite moves by the leading opposition.

He stated that all that was needed was an extra push by the Presidential Campaign Council and the February 16 poll would become a formality.

Buhari spoke in Abuja at the inaugural meeting of the council. However, All Progressives Congress governors were absent at the meeting.

Buhari said, “I will like to appeal to you to dedicate yourselves once again to the task at hand.

“There is no doubt that victory is ours. But that shouldn’t mean we should rest even for a moment.”

The National Leader of the APC and co-chairman of the council, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; the APC National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole; and the Director-General of the campaign and Minster of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, among others, attended the session.

Recall that President Buhari had on Tuesday handed over the leadership of the campaign to Tinubu when he inaugurated the council in Abuja.

On Thursday, he reminded the council members that they were the best materials available to the party.

“I urge you to rise to the challenge of the great expectations of this party and Nigerians – and the confidence that I personally have in the ability of all of you to deliver,” Buhari added.

MC Oluomo In Critical Condition? Maybe Flown Abroad

A leader of the National Union of Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo, may be flown abroad for further treatment over his condition.

Reports of his death is "false", but he's in critical condition...

A close aide of the union leader, who spoke to The Punch on condition of anonymity on Thursday, said MC Oluomo would travel any time soon as plans had been concluded for his treatment by a specialist in the United States where he is a citizen.

This is just as The Punch gathered that no fewer than three police vans were keeping guard at the hospital – Eko Hospital – where the patient is being treated.

Politicians of different calibre were said to have visited the hospital, as security operatives screen everyone going in to see him.

MC Oluomo was among the people injured at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress campaign at the Sky Power Ground, Ikeja, on Tuesday.

Three journalists also sustained gunshot injuries. Rival factions of the NURTW had clashed at the event.

MC Oluomo was allegedly stabbed in the neck and side with a knife.

The aide said, “He was stabbed in the neck and by the side with what they call makanje (poisoned knife). He is a citizen of the United States, so there cannot be any problem with his medical treatment abroad. In fact, he will be flown out in a few days for better medical care. Contrary to what they are saying, Baba (MC Oluomo) is not dead.”

A source at the hospital said, “Top politicians have been coming to see him. The level of security is high. Three police vans are here.”

The Chairman of the NURTW in Lagos state, Tajudeen Agbede, could not be reached as his mobile phone was switched off.

The spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Chike Oti, said, “A total 16 suspects have now been arrested in connection with the clash. The police are not aware of any treatment abroad; such is a private arrangement. It has nothing to do with us.”

ASUU Insists: Strike Continues Untill We See Implementation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Thursday said the ongoing strike would not be called off until the Federal Government fully implemented all the offers it made to the union after their last meeting.

The public university lecturers said they were tired of
Federal Government’s antics of making unfulfilled promises, insisting that the strike would be called off after they got tangible evidence and concrete actions that the offers made to them by the Federal Government had been implemented.

The National President, ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in an exclusive interview with The Punch in Lagos on Thursday, said the team of the union that met with the government on Tuesday did not reach any agreement with the Federal Government.

Asked when the strike would then be called off, Ogunyemi said, “Our members said they want to see evidence of satisfactory implementation of all they have proposed before the strike can be called off.”

On Tuesday, ASUU met with the Federal Government officials including the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, as well as his Labour and Employment counterpart, Chris Ngige.

After their discussions, Ngige explained what the Federal Government was offering to the union.

He said the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Finance had confirmed with evidence that N15.4bn had been released to public universities.

But ASUU president recalled that last year, the government promised to release funds for the revitalisation of public universities, which was one of the demands of the union, but failed to do so.

Ogunyemi stated, “As for the proposal, it can be disaggregated. There are items there that require implementation. If they are setting up a committee on state universities, and they actually do, it is not something we need to agree on. It is about action.

“If they have implemented it, it is off the list. If the government says it will pay a shortfall of salaries on a certain date, and the date comes and they release the money, it is also implementation. There is no agreement on the matter.

“On the revitalisation fund, we presented to the government that five tranches of N220bn each were outstanding. The government has not said it will release one, even if it is spread over a period of one year. There is no agreement on that. What they are offering is not even up to one tranche.

“Last year, they promised to release the fund but they did not till November when the strike began. Long story short, our members are saying they do not want promises again, what they want is action, implementation or disbursement of funds. The government must act in a way to convince the union that agreement has not been set aside; to show that government has not set aside the agreement, they should release one tranche.”

He explained that in order to forestall a situation ASUU and the government would restart negotiations on arrears of earned academic allowances, both sides agreed that “it would be mainstreamed into the 2019 budget.”

According to him, such an agreement was reached last year, but he said the government failed to honour it.

Ogunyemi stated, “We are going to have a discussion on when to commence renegotiation because there are still grey areas. If the government can substantially address these issues, we will be more confident to face our members on the way forward. For now, the feeler we are getting is that our members do not actually want to accept this government proposal from us.

“They said they would pay the shortfall of salary arrears of what was removed from workers’ salaries. There are 20 universities identified. The money will be available by January 18. It is around the corner and we will see if it will come.”

…says FG’s offers far below its expectations
Also, ASUU, in its Strike Bulletin 8 issued by its President, a copy of which was obtained by one of our correspondents in Ibadan, said the Federal Government’s proposal was far below its expectations.

In its latest bulletin, the union president said the offer from the Federal Government towards meeting the demands of ASUU as contained in the 2017 Memorandum of Action was still fluid and far from expectations.

How These Two Sisters Shot Their Own Mother Dead In US

In what will come across as a really shocking development, a 14-year-old and her 12-year-old sister were arrested for stabbing and shooting their mother to death — a brutal payback after they were punished for trying to run her over with the family car, neighbors and officials in Mississippi, USA have said.

The teen, Amariyona Hall, and her younger sister were
taken into custody late Friday after deputies in Pike County responded to the family’s mobile home in Magnolia, where Erica Hall, a 32-year-old mother of four, was found stabbed multiple times and shot once in the chest with a handgun.

Emergency workers tried to resuscitate Hall, whose relatives found her bloodied outside her home just minutes earlier, but she could not be saved. Investigators then zeroed in on Hall’s daughters, Pike County Sheriff Kenny Cotton told the McComb Enterprise Journal, New York Post reports.

“They found out the daughters — two teenagers, juveniles — allegedly did it,” Cotton said, adding that both girls are scheduled for mental evaluations. “They’re charged with murder and we’re going to apply the law.”

Cotton said deputies reported that Friday’s attack followed an incident days earlier in which the girls tried to run Hall over with the family’s car. That prompted Hall to punish her daughters, leading them to respond with the fatal assault, according to investigators.

“With something like that, she should have made charges and had them arrested then,” Cotton said of the earlier alleged assault.

Neighbors told WAPT that Hall was killed days after taking away her daughters’ cellphones. It wasn’t clear if the mom took the phones away before or after her daughters allegedly tried to mow her down.

Cotton, meanwhile, said he couldn’t make sense of the alleged retribution killing.

“I can’t imagine what’s going on inside their minds to process that,” he told the newspaper. “A mom is a mom no matter what.”

A message seeking additional comment from sheriff’s officials was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Amariyona Hall, who has been charged as an adult, is being held on $150,000 bond at the Pike County Jail. She’s due to return to court for a preliminary hearing Jan. 29 after appearing for a bond hearing Saturday, the newspaper reports.

Hall’s younger daughter, who was not named, remains in custody at the Adams County Juvenile Detention Center.

Hall’s aunt, Robin Coney, said her niece — who worked at poultry producer Sanderson Farms in Summit — initially was attacked inside her residence and managed to stagger outside to take her final breaths.

“She was stabbed in the back,” Coney told WLBT. “The knife was still in her back.”

Coney said the girls denied stabbing Hall, telling her, “Tee Tee, we didn’t do this,” she told the station.

“And I was like, ‘OK, if y’all didn’t do it, where were y’all when the people that was doing it did it?’” Coney continued.

Coney said the killing followed an argument at the family’s home late Friday.

“It was [Erica’s] gun,” Coney said. “It was her car. So they had got it out. So I guess when they were doing all that to her, she was probably trying to get to her gun to fight for her life.”

The girls calmly went to a neighbor’s home after the killing to ask for a ride because their grandmother just died, Coney said. But the neighbor called to confirm that with Hall and got no answer, WLBT reports.

Coney said the girls then walked to another relative’s home as Amariyona Hall’s younger sister, Ebony, went to the home and found her mother lying outside.

Meet 10yrs Old Super Brilliant Boy Who Solves Maths Faster Than Calculator

A 10-year-old South African boy, Sibahle Zwane’s mesmerising exploits have gone viral on social media. He has the amazing ability to answer complex arithmetic questions faster than a calculator and in seconds.

According to BCC, he shot into prominence when he was filmed answering complex math questions from a local policeman in South Africa, in 2018.

He also lived up to the hype when he was featured in a quick video on BBC recently.

The young lad, who has amazed South Africans with his stunning talent at math is simply looking to make some cash on the side.

According to TimesLIVE, the Grade 4 pupil charges just R2 for every correct answer he provides.

His mom, Mbali Zwane, said he makes up to R200 a day.

Ms Zwane, a 28-year-old, single and unemployed mother of two, says his gift was first picked up when he was in grade two. She said his teachers told her he had a unique ability with numbers.

She has applied for scholarships to take him to an institution where his talent can be developed.

Sibahle, who aspires to be a pilot when he grows up, said he can’t really explain how he manages to make complex calculations in his head.

“I just see the numbers in my head. I like numbers more than anything else. In the meantime, he’s making good money from strangers who are blown away by his talent, proving that he has a good business sense as well,” he told TimesLive.

His mum said that he is generally less focused on other subjects and often gets lazy doing them, but not with numbers.

How A Gallant Soldier Killed 14 Boko Haram Before 'Going Down'

The story has been told of how a gallant Nigerian soldier succeeded in killing as many as 14 Boko Haram insurgents before he was gunned down in the line of battle.

Boko Haram insurgents may have been gaining ground recently in their onslaughts against the Nigerian Military, but the deaths of soldiers in battle are usually laden with untold stories of the heroics of Nigerian troops...

As Sahara Reporters has now found out from a firsthand witness, when Boko Haram raided the Army’s base in Monguno, Borno State, in the last week of 2018, the soldier who was killed, lost his life in the most heroic of circumstances — and not until he had killed at least 14 Boko Haram insurgents.

“We were on ground when Boko Haram surprised us with a strike,” a soldier who escaped the attack unhurt told SaharaReporters on Thursday.

“The first thing we did was to run for cover. We ran until we arrived a location fenced with transparent barbed wire. The place was locked.”

The soldier driving the vehicle disembarked and fired at the padlock, paving the way for others to charge through the gate and run until they got to a parapet — “a straight, deep hole that you can take cover in” — where the assailants were hiding in their dozens.

“The Boko Haram insurgents were hiding inside,” said the soldier.

“That was how the driver came down from his own vehicle, collected his rifle, jumped into the parapet and started shooting those guys inside [the insurgents].

“He killed more than 14 Boko Haram insurgents before he died — more than 14. He was killing them and advancing. But there was one insurgent that he shot and thought had died; it was that one who eventually managed to shoot him in the back as he was advancing, otherwise he would have killed many more. He killed many of them already, more than 14.”

Only one soldier — that driver — died in that attack, while another was injured. But in an attack the same week when insurgents overtook Baga, killing many soldiers, with some 700 more missing, the story was entirely different.

“Nobody stood to fight. People ran away — because Boko Haram came with enough weapons. Those guys were holding good weapons. All those things that the Army says about weapons are fake; they are lying. They don’t have what Boko Haram has,” the soldier added.

“You cannot compare yourself holding a blunt knife and trying to fight someone with a sharp cutlass. Imagine, your knife is not long; and it’s not sharp. Now, your opponent has a long and sharp cutlass. The person will surely defeat you.

“So, that is the problem we’re facing; we don’t have weapons. Look at Baga, Boko Haram collected it from the Army. The most painful thing is that the brigade there had a guard room where both soldiers and Boko Haram were locked. When Boko Haram chased everyone away, they opened the guard room. What do you think they would have done to the soldiers in that guardroom? Kill them, of course!”

Shock As Bayelsa Speaker, Deputy Allegedly Steal N1billion

There is rising tension in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly over a petition filed before the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) by the member representing Brass Constituency 1, Hon. Isreal Sunny-Goli, against the Speaker, Hon. Kombowei Benson (pictured middle, with Dickson), the Clerk of the House, Mr. Aaron Timiye (pictured left) and two other accountants over alleged diversion and embezzlement of over a billion naira in allowances, constituency tour and office maintenance allowances in the last four years.

Sunny-Goli stated in the petition that although he endured the show of disdain to his office as an Assembly member and his constituent in Brass Constituency 1 by the Speaker on the direct orders of the State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, the alleged diversion of his allowances started from 2015 and has continued till date.

He condemned the grand conspiracy by the Speaker, Clerk, Head of Account Department, Mr. Koroye Stephen and Former HOD, Accounts, Mr. Thompson Tamaradubo, to intimidate him and deprive him of his legitimate financial benefits from the Assembly, and further perpetrate largescale financial fraud on the funds belonging to the Assembly, SR reports.

According to the petition, signed by his legal counsel, Ochu Chukwuma, Esq.: "It is also very pertinent to state that from 2015 till date the Speaker of the House of Assembly and his co-travellers in the disastrous financial misadventure have refused to pay our client his furniture allowance but have appropriated the same for themselves.

"Sometime in 2016, our client was deliberately left out of an approved trip for all members of the House of Assembly to attend the Commonwealth Parliamentary Assembly in Mauritius. While every member of the Assembly was paid, our client was refused payment and consequently the trip. The approved money was taking, withdrawn and spent by the persons mentioned.”

“Sir, it is of paramount importance to state that the approved sum of money for member’s constituency tour during the annual assembly recess, which money is usually paid to members’ salaries account, have never been paid to our client. This money was paid to other members from the Assembly Sterling bank account and that of our client has been embezzled jointly by the afore-mentioned persons. While in June, 2018 the approved N8,000,000.00 (Eight Million Naira) only usually paid as constituency Office Maintenance Allowance to members were transferred from the Assembly Sterling Bank Account to the Assembly Zenith Bank Account and paid to all the other members’ salaries account except that of our Client.”

“Most worrisome sir, within this month of August, 2018 our client was paid the sum of N10,000,000,00 (Ten Million Naira) only as Constituency Tour Allowance for the annual assembly recess. This money was consequently and surreptitiously reversed from our clients salary account on the request of the Accountant acting supposedly on the orders of the Speaker of the Assembly. These acts and many more have been going on in the Assembly from inception and our client have drawn the attention of the Speaker to the anomalies but the same and all efforts by our client have been rebuffed without remedy, the Speaker citing 'Order from above' as excuse.

“Let it be stressed that the Assembly is an arm of Government with its operations distinct and separate from the other arms of government hence, it will be ridiculous for the perpetrators of this financial fraud to cite 'Order from above' as an excuse. It has become very urgent to checkmate this untoward financial recklessness being perpetrated against our client on one hand and the funds of the Assembly on the other hand hence this petition against the principal actors. You are, therefore, invited to use your good offices to properly investigate this matter with a view to bringing the perpetrators to justice.”

Several attempts to get the reaction of the Speaker proved difficult as his Media Aide, Mr. Aotendeike Boloigha, pleaded on Tuesday for 48 hours to allow his principal respond to the allegation.

“I have just spoken with my principal, the Speaker, can you kindly just hold on a bit till tomorrow so we can conclude on the petition?" Aotendeike Boloigha said. Seventy-two hours later, the Speaker's reaction is still being awaited.

Other sources within the state assembly told Sahara Reporters that the Speaker is seeking an audience with Governor Dickson in order to ensure his response to the petition is not misconstrued.

El-Rufai Is An Unpopular Governor, He Hasn’t Achieved Anything - Shehu Sani

The Senator representing Kaduna Central at the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has described the state Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, as “unpopular.”

Sani, who is contesting for the Senate on the People’s Redemption Party platform, also said the governor had not achieved anything since 2015.

The senator had dumped the All Progressives Congress for the PRP three days after he was denied the ticket to contest for the Senate on the APC platform.

His rift with the state governor was believed to have cost him the ticket.

Speaking on Nigeria 2019, an Arise TV programme on Thursday, Sani said the PRP was a major threat to the APC in Kaduna State, saying, “This is why every morning and evening, they destroy our billboards and tear our posters. They are persecuting our members. If we were inconsequential, they would have ignored us.”
Sani alleged that, the fact that “el-Rufai had a hand” in denying him the APC ticket didn’t mean anything.

He said, “The question is, can he win? The fact is that he is one of the most unpopular governors in the history of Kaduna State.

“The President (Muhammadu Buhari) has been to the state for many times, but how many times have you seen him inaugurating a project in the state?

“The first time the President went there, he was given a honorary degree from a university that had not started a PhD programme; the second time he was in the state was to inaugurate Olam, a company from Singapore.

“The third time was to inaugurate a project by the Ministry of Transport. So, he (el-Rufai) has not done anything and we are going to remove him out of power. That is a fact.”

The lawmaker explained that he and el-Rufai had always been at daggers drawn because of their differences both politically and ideologically.

He said, “Politically, he is a product of the establishment. Out of what they say is the 16-year tragedy of the Peoples Democratic Party, he spent 14 or 15 years there as a member, from the regime of (former President Olusegun) Obasanjo, where he held different positions. So, he was part of the system before he joined the APC.

“All my life, I have been a freedom fighter, that is, a human rights activist. Most of the years under military rule, I spent my time in prison. From this angle, you can see where we differ.”

“For a governor of a state who came into office with a Muslim-Christian ticket now going for a second term and saying some people don’t matter, I don’t want to be associated with that kind of person, because all I know is that, with all his arrogance, haughtiness and egoism as a governor, power is ephemeral.

“There is a time he will be out of office and he will account for whatever he has done,” Sani stated.

Saraki Loyalists In Government Will Be Removed, Says Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says some of the loyalists of the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, holding federal executive positions will soon be shown the way out.

The Minister disclosed this on Thursday in Ilorin at a ceremony organised by the Kwara State All Progressives Congress to sensitise and mobilise the party’s women leaders ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the minister said that despite Saraki allegedly using his position to sabotage national development to the detriment of the people, his loyalists from Kwara State were still occupying executive positions.

He said the Federal Government would not hesitate to sack those beneficiaries in executive positions.

‘‘Some of the people they nominated to the boards of government’s agencies and parastatals are still there, yet they claim that Kwara has not benefitted from this Federal Government.

‘‘These people, some of whom are holding executive positions, will soon be shown the way out,’’ he said.

Mohammed said Kwara elections, like that of the general poll, would be issue-based devoid of ethnicity, religion or gender.

He said the issues the APC is concerned with in Kwara have to do with good governance and a better life for the people.

‘‘The main issues here have to do with how our state has been governed in the past 50 years, 40 of which have been dominated by a single family.

‘‘What has happened to the commonwealth, which has been cornered by a single dynasty at the expense of the people.

‘‘Where are the roads and other infrastructure to justify the huge resources that have accrued to the state?

‘‘If you follow a path for so long, and it leads you nowhere, won’t you try another path? These are the issues,’’ he said.

Dame Amaechi at the Noble Women Movement for Buhari and Osinbajo (NWM4BO) in Abuja, Thursday alluded to the recently released audio tapes in which her husband was allegedly criticising the present administration, appealed to women to pray for her husband.

“My husband Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the DG Campaign for the president is working tirelessly but I want you even when this programme is over to pray for him because of the too many eyes that are on him not by any fault of his but because Gods favour is upon him. That the will of God will be done in Nigeria and that no man will take his position or take away what belongs to him,” she prayed.

While reeling out some of the achievements of the Buhari administration during NWM4BO, a socio-political group of professional women in politics have garnered their support to actualise his victory at the 2019 Presidential Elections, said, “For the first time, we can boost that federal money is going to capital projects.

At least, I know my husband’s ministry is a moving train. I was able to board a train that looks like I am abroad and I have been able to ply some roads that before now were gullies.” Dame Amaechi who is the Chairperson Board of women Directors, NWM4BO, pointed out that the decision to support the reelection of the President was anchored on the remarkable achievements recorded in the last three tears.

She said, “First it was because our President Buhari has done a great job that we decided to rally round him.He has made remarkable improvement from the time he took over three years ago.

“The President wife Aisha Buhari has also done well in her capacity with little or no resources and we as women have come together to give her the necessary backing so that they can finish up with the good job they have started and come February 2019 we shall make of to the Glory of God for a second term and this requires a lot of work”.

“And in the Niger Delta, Buhari has shown strong strides. I want to encourage all of you not to lose hope. I tell you, if you work very hard , God will always bless you and if we get what is right about Nigeria, even our kids yet unborn will say this is my country and I am very proud to associate with it.
