New Canada Jobs For More Than 1 Million New Immigrants

For those who desire to work outside Nigeria, the opportunity is coming. The Canadian Parliament has announced plans to add more than one million new permanent residents in the next three years. That's nearly one percent of the country's population each year.

Canada welcomed more than 286,000 permanent residents in 2017 and projects that number could reach 350,000 this year.

And 360,000 in 2020.
And 370,000 in 2021.

"Thanks in great part to the newcomers we have welcomed throughout our history, Canada has developed into the strong and vibrant country we all enjoy," said Ahmed Hussen, Canada's minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC).

Hussen, himself an immigrant from Somalia, said the influx will help offset Canada's aging population and declining birth rate while growing its labor force.

Canada's friendly stance towards new residents comes as many other Western nations, including the United States, are adopting more restrictive immigration policies.

NLC Seeks Prosecution Of Parents, Guardians Of Street Children

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Niger state on Saturday called on the state government to prosecute parents and guardians of street children for child abuse offences.

Its Chairman, Mr Idris Ndako, made the call in an interview with NAN in Minna.

Ndako said that such step if taken, would serve as deterrent to parents and guardians who abuse children in any form.

The NLC chair called for a law that would be binding on all defaulters, noting that a lot of children had lost their destinies due to street begging.

“We continue to say that youths are the leaders of tomorrow, but that is only true if they are given the basic training as children.

“These children are seen begging for food on a daily basis; their identity is plastic plates with rope tied around their necks.

“They are usually in worn-out, filthy clothes.

“Niger state government should promulgate a law against the trafficking of male children from the neighbouring states in the name of acquiring Islamic knowledge, only for them to end up as child beggars.

“It is a fact that every child has the right to learn in any part the country and the world at large, but it has to be the responsibility of parents or funding organisations if on scholarship.

“Underage children cannot be patrolling our streets begging for money and food, when they are supposed to be learning in a formal school system and government just looks away,” he said.

According to Ndako, an average Islamic teacher does not have food to give to the teeming pupils under his tutelage and is, therefore, left with no choice than to allow them go begging for their daily up-keep.

“This is child labour and government should do the needful on this matter to save the children and the society,” he stated.

Breaking: FG Begins Move To Remove Chief Justice Of Nigeria Over Alleged Corruption

The Federal Government has declared war against the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, asking him to immediately vacate his exalted office as Head of the Nation’s judiciary over alleged sundry asset declaration issues.

In a move to force Justice Onnoghen out of office,
the Federal Government will on Monday January 14, 2019 arraigned the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu-led Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja on charges of failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.

The charge against Justice Onnoghe has already being filed and served on him last Friday at his official residence in Abuja preparatory for his appearance at the tribunal.

The Federal Government among others is accusing Nigeria’s Head of the Judiciary of refusal to declare his assets in breach of the provision of the Code of Conduct Bureau Act.

He is also being accused of maintaining Domiciliary foreign currencies account which comprised Dollars Account, Pound Sterling Account and Euro Account which are alleged to be contrary to relevant laws, especially for public office holders.

Justice Onnoghen whose appointment suffered unprecedented delay by President Muhammadu Buhari over undisclosed issues may be the first CJN in Nigeria to be arraigned for criminal charges by the Federal Government.

Apart from putting the Chief Justice in the dock on Monday, PRNigeria learned that motion on notice is to be filed against him praying the tribunal to order him to vacate office and recuse himself from office so as to prevent alleged interference in his arraignment and trial.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, names withheld, has been engaged by Federal Government to lead the onslaught against justice Onnoghen.

However, it is gathered that eminent lawyers have volunteered to put their services at the disposal of Justice Onnoghen in the bid to rescue him from the claws of the Buhari government.

It would be recalled the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki was in 2015, shortly after he emerged the Head of the Legislature, arraigned at the tribunal but the charges against him were quashed and he was discharged and acquitted by the tribunal on the ground that the charges against him by government were based on hearsay that could not stand in the face of the law.

Saraki’s discharge and acquittal was upheld by the Supreme Court under the leadership of Justice Onnoghen.

FG Charges CJN With Non-Declaration Of Asset

The Federal Government, through the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), has charged the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen with non-declaration of assets.

In a six-count charge filed earlier this week by officials of the CCB at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja, Onnoghen was accused of failing to declare some assets allegedly traced to him, as required by law.

CCT’s spokesman, Ibraheem Al-Hassan, who confirmed the existence of the charge, said the tribunal has scheduled January 14 for arraignment.

Al-Hassan said the fixing of the date of arraignment was informed by an application filed on January 11 this year, by the CCB, seeking that the case be set down for hearing.

He said a copy of the charge has been served on the CJN as required.

Al-Hassan said, in a statement: “The Code of Conduct Tribunal has scheduled Monday, 14th of January for the commencement of trial in the charge the against current Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon Justce Onnoghen Nkanu Walter Samuel for alleged non declaration of asset.

“This was consequent upon an application filed by the Code of Conduct Bureau to the CCT Chairman yesterday (January 11) for the trial to commence against the Chief Justice of Nigeria on six count charges. However, service of summons has been effected on the dependant.

“The application was filed yesterday by the operatives of CCB, dated 11th January, 2019 and signed by Musa Ibrahim Usman (Esq) and Fatima Danjuma Ali (Esq), containing six counts charges, all bordering on non-declaration of asset.

“The three-man panel, led by Justice Danladi Y. Umar, will commence the trial on Monday, 14th January, 2019 at the CCT courtroom, situated at the headquarters, along Jabi Dakibiyu, Saloman Lar way, Abuja, at about 10:00am.”

Many people were feared killed in a petrol tanker explosion along the Calabar-Odukpani Highway in Odukpani local government area of Cross River State on Friday.

The incident occurred at a bend close to the Odukpani local government secretariat.

It was gathered the petrol tanker fell while trying to negotiate the bend with residents rushing to the scene to scoop petrol.

Eyewitnesses reported the clamour for petrol resulted into a spark as some of the residents used metal containers to scoop the product.

This led to an explosion which killed several people at once.

At the scene, the police tried to contain the situation as the fire raged.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, could not confirm the number of fatalities as at press time.

Just Imagine! Innocent Man Wrongly Accused, Beaten To Death

A 45-year-old man, Yusuf Ibrahim, has lost his life in jungle justice after a mob lynched him over a car battery allegedly stolen at Nato Park, Tin Can Island, Apapa, Lagos.

It was later discovered that the battery was found with one Yusuf Yahaya, who works around Tin Can First Gate – some distance from the park.

The incident happened on Monday, January 7, 2019, around 7.30am.

The victim was said to be one of the destitute people who sometimes passed the night on the premises, where trucks are parked.

It was gathered that when one of the truck drivers resumed duty that morning, he discovered that the battery of his vehicle was missing.

He raised the alarm and a search party was formed to fish out the perpetrator.

A commercial motorcyclist (popularly known as okada rider) in the area, who identified himself only as Salisu, told The Punch that some drivers suspected Ibrahim and accosted him.

He said, “I was on my motorcycle, coming from Liverpool, Apapa that morning when I saw a crowd at the park. I moved closer and saw a man (Ibrahim) covered in blood. He had been beaten to a pulp. I asked people what happened and they told me he stole the battery of a truck.

“The man had lost his strength and he was almost dead. Passersby were afraid to take him to a hospital. I later left the scene for fear of being implicated.”

Salisu said about 30 minutes later, he went back to the scene and was told that some policemen had come to remove Ibrahim’s corpse.

He said sadness overwhelmed him when he learnt that the battery was found with somebody else.

“It was discovered that the battery was actually stolen by a young man called Yahaya. I learnt he worked around Tin Can First Gate,” the okada rider added.

Another eyewitness, who identified himself as Danladi, said entreaties by some people to stop the mob from lynching Ibrahim were rebuffed.

He said the mob dispersed the scene upon noticing that the victim was dying, adding that some suspects had been arrested by the police.

“It was very unfortunate that the man was killed for a crime he did not commit. Even if he had stolen the battery, I don’t see why they should beat him up. I used to see him around the park, but I don’t know where he lived. The police should bring his killers to justice,” the eyewitness said.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Chike Oti, while confirming the incident said six suspects, including Yahaya, had been arrested.

Oti stated that the command frowned on mob justice and urged people to desist from the dastardly act.

He said, “On Monday, around 7.30am, we received information that one Yusuf Ibrahim, aged 45, of Nato Park, Tin Can Island, Apapa, was allegedly beaten to death by some drivers at the aforesaid address.

“A team of detectives was swiftly dispatched to the scene upon receiving the distress call. It was found out that the deceased was wrongly alleged to have stolen a truck battery, which was later found with one Yusuf Yahaya. The victim’s corpse has been evacuated to the Apapa General Hospital morgue for autopsy. However, the said Yusuf Yahaya and five other suspects that carried out the jungle justice on the deceased have been arrested.”

The PPRO said the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, had directed that the case be transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, for thorough investigation.

“The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded."

Revealed: No Provision For Extension Of IGP Tenure In Nigeria's Constitution

The 1999 Nigerian Constitution does not have provisions for extension of the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police, checks by The Punch have shown.

The third schedule of the constitution dealing with the IG’s appointment states that the IG will be appointed by the President on the advice of the Nigeria Police Council.

The NPC is comprised of the President who is the chairman; state governors; chairman of the Police Service Commission; and the Inspector-General of Police.

Findings by The Punch indicate that the law guiding the appointment of the IG is silent on the retirement or extension of the occupant’s tenure by the President.

This, lawyers say, means that an extension of the IG’s tenure will be illegal and a violation of the constitution.

A lawyer and Executive Director, Citizens Advocacy for Social & Economic Rights, Frank TieTie, argues that President Muhammadu Buhari has no power to extend the tenure of the current IG, Ibrahim Idris, who is expected to leave office on January 15 when he will attain 60 years of age.

The activist argues that there is no reason to extend Idris’ tenure, stating that there are many good officers who can preside over the force. He adds that the argument that the IG has substantially prepared for the forthcoming elections is not tenable.

“The President doesn’t have such powers (to extend IG’s tenure). The IG is appointed by the President on the advice of the Nigeria Police Council.

“A responsible government will know three months to the retirement date of a substantive IG that the NPC needs to recommend to the President the appointment of an IG, which eventually will be confirmed by the Senate.

“That not being done is an indication that the President wants to allow the anomaly to go on. This anomaly is being allowed to fester because it has not been challenged in court,” the activist says.

He observes that a lot of anomalies are being condoned by the Federal Government, noting that many chief executives of federal departments and agencies are being illegally granted tenure extension.

“We have seen a lot of anomalies under this administration in terms of extension of tenures of chief executives of federal parastatals. For example, the comptroller-general of the Federal Fire Service was given tenure extension which I challenged.”

Another lawyer, Sunny Anyanwu, says he is against the alleged plan to extend the IG’s tenure, stressing that the President has no power to do so.

He says, “The President has no constitutional power to extend the IG’s tenure; more so that he has not done well. Idris should be allowed to retire honourably to his village.”

But an Abuja lawyer, Kayode Ajulo, disagrees, saying, “I don’t want to talk much about the issue since the IG has till January 15 to retire, but the President has the power to extend his tenure.”

Speeding Driver Kills 4 Friends Returning From Party In Lagos

The Lagos state police command are on the trail of a hit-and-run driver who allegedly ran over four friends at Mosalasi Bus Stop, Gowon Estate, Lagos, killing them.

It was learnt from witnesses that the victims –
Wasiu Ayinde, 28; Azeez Adeleke, 26; Ibrahim Balogun, 30; and one Samuel aged 27 – had attended a carnival at Iyana Iba last Saturday.

They lived in Ijoko, Ogun State and were said to be returning home with five others when the car knocked them down at the spot around 5am on Sunday. Three of them reportedly died on the spot.

It was gathered that they had boarded a bus from the venue to the bus stop and were waiting for the next available bus when the incident occurred.

City Round learnt that residents sent a distress call to the police at the Gowon Estate Division and the corpses were evacuated to the Mainland General Hospital morgue.

Ayinde’s father, Mutiu, a butcher, told our correspondent that he was at work when he received the sad news.

He said, “I did not sleep at home last Saturday when Wasiu (Ayinde) attended the carnival with his friends and he did not inform his mother before he left home. I was at work when my wife called me that Wasiu and his friends were involved in an accident around Gowon Estate. He and three other friends died. He was the third child in the family. He was married with a child. I learnt they were invited to the carnival by their friends.”

Mutiu described the death as a great loss to the family and urged the police to ensure that the driver was arrested.

A relation of Adeleke, Kazeem Jimoh, said the family knew about the accident through those who sustained injuries.

He said Adeleke, a plumber, was survived by parents, a wife and a child who had since been thrown into mourning.

He said, “They were walking along the road when the car rammed into them. The driver sped off and he has yet to be arrested. Nine of them from Ijoko attended the carnival. The four of them that died were good friends. Three died on the spot while the fourth person, Samuel, died at the Ikeja General Hospital. They were invited to the event by their friends. They also held their carnival on the New Year’s Eve and those friends were there.

“Luckily, the bumper of the car came off and the number plate was there. It has been handed over to the police. We want the police to track down the driver and bring the person to justice.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the police had intensified efforts to arrest the driver. He, however, said three fatalities were recorded by the police.

He said, “On Sunday, around 7am, our men at the Gowon Estate Police Station received a distress call that there was an accident at Mosalasi Bus Stop. They visited the scene and it was discovered that three pedestrians were knocked down and died on the spot. Their corpses were evacuated to the Mainland General Hospital morgue for autopsy. The command will ensure that the driver is arrested and brought to justice.”

We Want To Give Dino Melaye Better Medical Attention - DSS

Department of State Services (DSS) confirmed on Friday night that Senator Dino Melaye has been moved from the Police Clinic in Area 1, Garki, Abuja to its medical facility in the city.

In a statement on Friday night the DSS denied that its men abducted Dino.

DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya, said the abduction story was far from the truth.

“The fact is that it was the Police that brought him to the DSS facility after obtaining a 14-day detention warrant with effect from 9th January, 2019. The aim of bringing him to the Service’s facility is to complement Police efforts in giving the Senator a deserved medical attention.

“Consequently, the Service, in line with medical ethics and spirit of inter-agency cooperation, accepted him. This clarification has become necessary in order to address the false allegation that hooded men suspected to be DSS operatives abducted the Senator from the Police hospital.

Melaye was arrested in connection with the shooting of a police officer in Kogi state in July. He surrendered to the police after a week of being holed up in his house in Abuja.

My Wives Are Not Relegated To "The Other Room" Atiku Mocks President Buhari

The presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, his wives and the National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus on Friday mocked President Muhammadu Buhari over the relegation of women to the kitchen or the bedroom which the President referred to as the ‘other room’.

They all spoke in Abuja at the Women Conferences with the theme “Call for Action.”

While Atiku promised to give women more than 35 percent in his government and would not be put in the other room, his wives said their husband, Atiku didn’t put them in the other room, but give them free hand and allowed them to do their businesses.

Atiku said: “We have no fear of handing over the country to you. In my three decades of politics, the most consistent voters in the Nigeria political process are women. I have practically seen it, if I stand as a candidate and I turn my back to look at the lines that are supporting me, the women lines are always three times that of the men.

“It is the reason why we said we are going to give you more than 35 percent, because your numbers and your pattern of voting justified that commitment.

“Therefore, between youth and women you have 70 percent of the government. This is to prepare you to take over governance, to take over this country and make it work again.

“So, this is your opportunity, your are not going to be put in the other room, I promise you because you have seen my wives here, they are not in the other room.”

Princess Rukayat Atiku Abubakar, the second wife of Atiku said that women have always been at the centre of events and called on them to reject the narrative that the place of women is in the kitchen.

Also speaking, Hajiya Titi Atiku Abubakar, his first wife said, “the candidate of today is a sellable candidate. As you can see, Atiku has not relegated us to the other room. He allows us to go wherever we want, he allows us to do our businesses, so we are not relegated to the other room.

“Atiku is an educationist, he wants to kick out hunger. Our children go to school but there is no jobs, Atiku is a creator of jobs.

“Atiku has about 26 children and all his children are involved in his businesses except one who is working for the government and that one is a technocrat. Go out there and propagate Atiku so that we can make Nigeria a place to live.”

APC Has Already Won The Election, says Buhari's SGF

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, says he believes the rulng party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the 2019 elections.

According to him, the APC is only waiting for INEC to announce results.

Mustapha said this on Thursday during the Gombe State APC governorship campaign rally at the Olusegun Obasanjo Stadium in Kaltungo, Gombe.

The SGF said, “We are only waiting for the announcement of the results. Just make sure you come out with your PVCs (Permanent Voter Cards) and cast your votes because the Peoples Democratic Party cannot deceive again.

“Today, the lies of PDP have finished because we are here in Kaltungo to uproot the roots of the PDP.

“In 2015, the PDP deceived you that our party, the APC was a Boko Haram party, they told you that if you voted for the APC, all of you would be islamised, there was nothing they didn't tell you.

“Today, if Buhari plays politics of religion, he wouldn't have appointed me the SGF because I am a Christian. If he were to be a religious politician, he wouldn't have taken (Yemi) Osinbajo, a pastor, and made him the Vice President.”

Mustapha said, “You people of Gombe South, come out and vote for the APC from the top down to the bottom.”
