Man Murders Friend Over Sewing Machine In Bauchi

A 20-year old man, Sadique Ahmed, has been arrested by the police for allegedly stabbing his friend to death for taking his sewing machine without permission.

It was learnt that Ahmed, a tailor, stabbed his friend and fellow tailor, Babangida Umar, 20, in the neck because the deceased took his sewing machine without his permission.

Northern City News gathered that the incident occurred at the Zango area within the Bauchi metropolis.

The father of the deceased, Umar Mohammed, told journalists in Bauchi on Sunday, that he was at the market square when one of his children broke the sad news to him.

Mohammed said, “I was sitting with my friends at the market after the Sahur prayers on Saturday, when the younger brother to the deceased ran to meet me and told me that I should come home because Sara Suka (political thugs) had killed Babangida.

“On my way home, I met some people carrying him to the hospital; so, we stopped a tricycle and we rushed him to the hospital. But I believe at that time he had died.

“Honestly, I was not happy at all; I was very sad when I heard the news. My mind was really troubled but I accept it as destiny.

“The boy, who committed this act, is my son’s friend until a misunderstanding happened between them.”

The mother of the deceased, Fatima, narrated how she had gone to the suspect’s family residence to apologise to him over her late son’s action without knowing that the suspect had already murdered him.

She explained that when she met the suspect, “He told me that he had addressed my son to the extent that he would not try what he did again, even if he was asked to do it.

“I didn’t know that he had killed my son already. I saw a lady, who witnessed the killing of my son crying, and she told me that my son had been killed.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kamal Abubabakar, confirmed the incident to Northern City News, adding that the incident occurred on January 5, 2019.

He said three suspects, including the prime suspect, had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Others arrested in connection with the crime are Mamman Adamu (25) and Adamu Isa (18).

Abubakar said police investigations into the crime were ongoing.

What CJN Onnoghen Told CCB About His Alleged 'Fraud' Charge

Here are details of a statement given by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, to the Code of Conduct Bureau which is accusing him of false asset declaration.

In one note, CJN Onnoghen said he “forgot to update his asset declaration, after the expiration of his 2005 declaration”.

Mr Onnoghen also explained that he believed that the form SCN 000015 filed in December 2016 after he emerged acting CJN would cover for the period after his confirmation as CJN.

The case against Mr Onnoghen came after a group, the Anti-Corruption and Research Based Data Initiative, sent a petition against him alleging wrongdoing in his asset declaration.

The group said the CJN, Nigeria’s most senior judicial officer, maintained illegal accounts containing foreign currencies and did not declare them.

The group’s head, Denis Aghanya, is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress and a former publicity secretary of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change.

The group said, its petition was brought “bearing in mind the imminence of the 2019 elections and the overwhelming role of the judiciary both before and after the election.”

A statement by the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Saturday, said Mr Onnoghen would be arraigned for alleged false asset charge on Monday — seven days after the petition was brought.

Some lawyers have alleged the trial is politically motivated.

Sebastian Hon, a senior advocate of Nigeria, told PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday it is “more political than it is honest”.

“While I know that the Chief Justice of Nigeria does not enjoy immunity from criminal prosecution, I see this move by the Federal Government as dangerously political and tendentious,” he said.

“Suddenly, we woke to see a petition leaked to the informal or social media, allegedly received by the Code of Conduct on 9th January, 2019. Suddenly, we are told charges have been filed against the CJN. Why this supersonic rush?”

In his response to queries raised by the CCB, Onnoghen wrote as follows:

“My asset declaration form numbers SCN 00014 and SCN 00005 were declared on the same day, 14/12/2016 because I forgot to make a declaration of my assets after the expiration of my 2005 declaration in 2009. Following my appointment as acting CJN in November, 2016, the need to declare my assets anew made me to realize the mistake.

“I then did the declaration to cover the period in default. I did not include my standard charted bank account in SCN 000014 because I believed they were not opened.

“I did not make a fresh declaration of asset after my substantive appointment as CJN because I was under the impression that my SCN 000015 was to cover that period of four years which includes my term as CJN,” Mr Onnoghen said in his statement dated January 11.

Mr Onnoghen was first appointed acting CJN on November 10, 2017 following the retirement of the former CJN, Mahmoud Mohammed.

His appointment as acting CJN came amidst criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari’s failure to forward his name to the Senate for confirmation as the most senior judge.

On February 8, 2017 Vice President Yemi Osinbajo returned Mr Onnoghen’s name for confirmation to the Senate on March 1. Mr Onnoghen was subsequently sworn in to office as Nigeria’s 17th CJN on March 8, 2017.

I’m Not A Rich Man – Antar Laniyan

Popular filmmaker, Antar Laniyan, has a strong desire. He wishes to have a film academy where he can grow young talents, but money is hindering him from achieving his dream.

Laniyan told Sunday Scoop that despite all his years in the movie industry, he had no money to build a film academy. He said, “If any rich man approaches me now, I will tell him I want an academy where I can raise new talents.

This is what I know how to do best, but when you don’t have money, your ideas will go to bed. The problem with our industry is that people believe an actor is as rich as the role he plays. That is a fake assumption; we are not rich. But if we have people who can help us, we can do better. The easterners help each other. Once they see that an individual has talent, the rich ones among them are always willing to support him or her. Though we have some selfless southerners too, I have yet to get any help from them.”

Admitting that he notices how his colleagues flaunt wealth on social media, the filmmaker said he does not deceive himself.  He said, “If you deceive yourself, it will be hard to get helpers. If you appear to be rich on social media, people will conclude you are rich.”

Laniyan also expressed optimism that the industry would improve in the future. “I know things will get better for actors. Many movies are going to the cinema now and one makes more money there than selling DVD. I know there is a better tomorrow for Nollywood; I see us attaining greater heights,” he stated.

Actors Flaunting Wealth On Instagram Misleading Young Ones –Dele Odule

Veteran actor, Dele Odule, believes that there are many actors in Nollywood who really have no business being in the industry. Baring his mind on actors who often flaunt material possessions on social media, Odule told Sunday Scoop, “People like that are not in the business because they have passion for it. They are just looking for where to make ends meet.

A trained actor will never run after material wealth. I am not saying that acting cannot open doors; it actually does. However, a true actor will take material things as secondary; the priority is to get your message across to the viewers.

The problem we are facing is that the industry is not sanitised. If there was a standard, many of those people you see who are all about flaunting material things on social media wouldn’t be in the industry.

What is the essence of going on social media to flaunt cars and other items? You would see many actresses dancing around on social media; even when they get pregnant, they flaunt it. Buying a car shouldn’t be a big deal but they make it seem as if it is.”

Commenting on the effect such acts would have on young ones, Dele said, “They are passing a wrong message to the young ones out there who will have a warped impression of the industry.”

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the incident happened at Ovbiogie village in Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of  Police in the state, MR Hakeem Odumosun, who visited the scene of the incident, promised that the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation into the case.

Egypt University Expels Female Student For Hugging Male Friend

Egypt's Al-Azhar University said it had expelled a female student after she appeared in a video hugging a male colleague, accusing her of undermining the school's reputation.

The video, which went viral earlier this month, showed a young man carrying a bouquet of flowers kneeling before a young woman and then hugging her in what appeared to be a marriage proposal.

The video was apparently not filmed at Al-Azhar - a branch of Egypt's highest Sunni Muslim authority - but at another establishment, Mansoura University in the country's north.

Nevertheless the disciplinary council of the Al-Azhar University campus in Mansoura on Saturday "decided to expel the young girl definitively", university spokesman Ahmed Zarie told AFP.

He said the video had caused a "public outcry" and that the university's decision to expel her was because she had presented a "bad image" of Al-Azhar University, which strictly segregates the genders.

He said hugging between unmarried men and women violates "the values and principles of society".

The woman, however, can appeal the expulsion decision, Zarie said.

The young man who appeared in the video could also face sanctions, a spokesman for Mansoura University said, adding that the school's disciplinary council will meet on Monday to decide his "punishment".

Woman Reveals: How My Friend & Her Husband Abducted Me, Stripped Me N*ked

A woman falsely accused of stealing cash at a wedding has opened up on her ordeal.

Her voice cracked and tears welled up in her eyes amid sobbing while recounting her ordeal on that fateful day, Monday, November 5, 2018 at Usenten village in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The victim, Iniubong Essien, had been allegedly abducted by
one Uduak Godwin Nseobot, alias King Pele, a Councillor representing Southern II, Ward 6 in Ibiono Ibom LGA, and his wife, Aniedi, and taken to the community square where she was accused of stealing some of the money sprayed on them during their marriage which took place that weekend.

The allegation jostled her as, according to her, she never suspected her friend and the husband could be up to any claim that could be so detrimental to her person. Apparently, she was helpless and death stared her in the face as the villagers, allegedly at the prompting of the Council lawmaker, stripped her n*ked, tied a rope around her waist, battered her with sticks and stones and paraded her round the village.

This, she narrated, was the worst nightmare of her life as the incident left her traumatized and deeply depressed. For several weeks thereafter, she could not go to public places as she did not know who may have seen her n*ked body as posted by her attackers on the social media while she was being falsely paraded as a thief.

Iniubong said: “Being a friend of the bride, I helped her to sell the uniforms (aso-ebi) to our fellow friends and I attended the wedding and assisted in serving food while one of the friends of the bride, Gloria, assisted the couple in picking money sprayed on them during the nuptial dance. The service point was at the back of the hall. And I left in the company of other friends when they were giving the vote of thanks, because I had another traditional wedding to attend in the same neighbourhood.

‘’The day after the event, I was invited to the couple’s home at Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, and I informed them that I would not be able to visit them and jokingly told them to continue to enjoy their honey moon and that I would see them later and render account of the wedding uniforms I handled for them. I was still resting on the bed when Aniedi came and knocked and I opened the door for her and she came in and thanked me for my support during their wedding. She then invited me to come and meet the husband who was in the car with Gloria and one other person.

‘’When I got to the car, they asked me to enter and I said it was an opportunity for me to go the ATM so that I could withdraw the money and give to them, which I did. But instead of taking me back to my house, Pele (friend’s husband) took me to the village and he started calling people and, immediately, a crowd gathered and they started asking me to confess where I kept the money. And I asked them which money? At this point he (Nseobot) was grinding charcoal to rub on my body and he ordered his boys to strip me. And his PA told him, ‘Where is your gun? Let us finish this woman, whether she has not heard about Pele in Eket’. The PA added that nothing would happen if l was killed as his boss had the backing of prominent politicians in the state. I kept pleading with them all this while to let me go, but they refused.

‘He (Councillor) told me that he would kill, bury me and nobody would know. And I told them that if they killed me, the truth would one day come out and my innocent blood would not dry in Ibiono. They broke bottles on my head and assaulted me. And my n*de pictures were taken by the Councillor and the people and shared on social media”.

Iniubong said after much pleading, they agreed to take her to a herbalist for what she described as ‘’native finding”, and the villagers boarded four mini buses and other cars, and, as they were going, a friend of the Councillor called and warned him of the dire consequence of his unholy acts and he immediately disengaged the villagers and made a detour to Uyo to the Police Headquarters at Ikot Akpan Abia and handed her over to the police.

The police, Vanguard reports, moved by the bruises and injuries she sustained, immediately sent her to a clinic for medical treatment, while one of the suspects (Councillor Nseobot) was arrested and granted bail.

Meanwhile, Iniubong’s lawyers, Bailey Chambers, raised a strongly worded petition to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State CID, alleging assault, battery and threat to life as well as attempted murder of their client by Nseobot and his wife.

Akwa Ibom State Branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers also stepped into the matter. The body equally petition the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and the police and urged them to use their good offices to ensure the case was not swept under the carpet.

The women lawyers, in the petition signed by their Vice Chairperson, Emem Ette, condemned the incident in its entirety, and urged the Attorney General to take over the matter from the police to ensure that the suspects are prosecuted as, according to them, no man is above the law.

They maintained that the association would follow the case to its logical conclusion with a view to making sure that justice was done or seen to be done in the matter.

A traditional dimension has been added to the matter because of the fetish angle the suspect and his alleged accomplices were said to have taken on the victim, prompting the traditional institution in Nsit Ubium to send a message to her counterpart in Ibiono Ibom.

Two months after the incident, Iniubong is yet to come to terms with what happened as she still could not understand why her friend, her husband and their friends allegedly gave her such a raw deal, despite their cordial relationship which, according to her, spanned over 8-years and which, she said, necessitated her involvement during their marriage arrangement.

The victim has, however, approached the court in a bid to get justice.

‘’I want the right thing to be done. I want him (Councillor) to clear my name. He should go to the same village and call the same people on the day he disgraced me and apologize. He should also tender unreserved apology in national, local papers as well as radio. It is only then that I can let the matter to die permanently”, Iniubong said.

Zimbabwe To Re-Introduce A Local Currency

Zimbabwe will re-introduce a local currency "in less than 12 months", after using the US dollar and regional currencies since a hyperinflation crisis a decade ago, the finance minister said in an interview published on Saturday.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who took over from long-time ruler Robert Mugabe and won a disputed election in July, has pledged to revive the economy and mend fences with former allies in the west after years of international isolation.

"On the issue of raising enough foreign currency to introduce the new currency, we are on our way already, give us months not years," state-owned Herald newspaper quoted Finance Minister Mtuli Ncube as saying.

Asked for a timeline for the currency reform, the minister said it would be in "less than 12 months".

Zimbabwe adopted a basket of foreign currencies in 2009 after hyperinflation, which saw some businesses increasing prices several times a day, rendered the local Zimbabwe dollar unusable.

The southern African nation's economy has been in a downturn for more than a decade with shortages of cash, high unemployment and the government struggling to pay its workers.

The Chief Medical Director said the mother of the new baby was admitted into the hospital for IVF conception nine months ago and today, she is carrying her heathy child.

Prof Ugboma who appealed to mothers looking for babies and the public to always patronise the hospital for a safe IVF conception, saying the cost of carrying out the procedure is affordable compared to private hospitals.

Describing the process as a hitch free, Ugboma thanked team of UPTH medical experts led by prof John Ikimalo of Conception Unit and Dr Preye Fiebai of Obstetric and Gynaecology and the nurses for the successful feat in the delivery.

Ekweremadu Still Angry? Stays Away From Atiku's Campaigns

There are reported divisions in the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential campaign as associates and supporters of the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, appear to be taking a back seat in the campaign process.

The PDP had denied an earlier reported statement attributed to the Buhari Media Organisation that Ekweremadu and South-East governors were working for the success of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

But an associate of Ekweremadu, who spoke with The Punch on condition of anonymity over the issue on Friday, said the Deputy Senate President deliberately stayed away from the campaign of the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The source said Ekweremadu would not dissipate energy on a project that he was not considered worthy of playing any major role.

The source added, “The Deputy Senate President was not given any specific assignment in the Atiku Presidential Campaign Council, which I think is wrong. It is not proper that the PDP did not assign any national role to him in its presidential campaign.

“Ekweremadu was not even carried along when the PDP Presidential Campaign Council was constituted; he had no input at all. He also learnt of the composition, like other Nigerians, through the media. If Ekweremadu had not remained in the party, I doubt whether there would be any PDP to return to after the Supreme Court verdict that sacked the erstwhile national executive.

“It is wrong to say that he should campaign alongside his principal who is the director-general of the campaign council (Bukola Saraki). In any case, Ekweremadu was in Gombe State to campaign for Atiku. He is currently concentrating on the South-East, which is his own constituency. He is specifically focusing on how to deliver the South-East region.”

The source added that it was wrong to insinuate that the South-East governors were not involved actively in the PDP presidential campaigns because they felt Ekweremadu had been sidelined.

He said, “The truth of the matter is that the governors are also focusing on their own re-election. They will definitely show their power when the campaigns move to the South-East region.

“Is it when the governors take flights to Sokoto and Bauchi for campaign rallies that will show Nigerians that they are working for Atiku?”

Attempts to speak with Ekweremadu on the issue failed as of the time of filing this report. His Special Adviser on Media, Uche Anichukwu, had yet to respond to a text message sent to him.

But the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, on Saturday, said Ekweremadu was not being sidelined by the party.

He said the senator was active in the party’s structure and the Campaign Council.

TRAGIC! Many Fared Dead As Truck Rams Into Market In Ekiti

Many were feared dead in an evening fatal accident that occurred at a roadside market in Iworoko Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Sources said a truck coming from Ifaki Ekiti heading towards Ado Ekiti lost control and rammed into the market at about 8pm on Saturday.

Although casualty figures could not be ascertained as of the time of filing the report, a source said, “Four bodies had been recovered from the scene.”

According to the source, efforts to rescue others trapped under the truck were ongoing by sympathisers and traffic officials.

They added that a mini-commercial bus with passengers was crushed by the truck before ramming into the market.

A source said the situation would have been worse if students of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, residing in the community because of its proximity to their campus were around.

Dino Melaye Moved From DSS Facility To SARS Office

The police authorities have moved Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west, to the federal special anti-robbery squad (FSARS) office in Guzape district, Abuja.

On Friday, the police transferred the senator from their hospital to a Department of State Service (DSS) health facility for treatment after he complained that he was not getting better.

The police hospital had certified him fit for trial.

An associate of the senator told The Cable on Saturday that the next action of the police is unknown.

“They moved him to SARS office in Guzape. The police moved him without any word. We don’t know what they want to do now,” the associate said.

Last week, he surrendered to the police following a 8-day siege laid to his residence.

The police accused Melaye of culpable homicide and alleged that his supporters shot one Danjuma Saliu, a police officer, in Kogi state on July 19.

Jimoh Moshood, police spokesman, said they have a warrant to keep Dino for 14 days.

How Chief Justice Of Nigeria Onnoghen's Trouble Started

The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) case against the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen, was triggered by a petition from a civil rights group, Anti-Corruption And Research Based Data Initiative (ARDI).

A CCB investigator, Mr. James Akpala, said in an affidavit in support of the charges against Justice Onnoghen that the filing of the case stemmed from a petition against the CJN.

Akpala was silent on the name of the petitioners.

He merely said: “I know as a fact that the Head Office of the Bureau received a petition alleging that the CJN failed to declare his assets according to the law.”

ARDI describes itself as “a whistleblower and Anti-Corruption Awareness disseminator, whose effort is to strengthen our democracy and ensure transparent, accountable and responsive governance devoid of corruption for our society.”

It is run by Dennis Aghanya, who served as a media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari between 2009 and 2011.

Aghanya was also the pioneer National Publicity Secretary of Buhari's defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) on whose platform Buhari contested the 2011 presidential election.

The ARDI petition dated January 7, 2019 was received two days later by the CCB, according to online publication, The Cable, shortly before the news of the impeding trial of Onnoghen broke yesterday.

The civil society group said its petition was necessitated by “the imminence of the 2019 General Elections and the overwhelming roles of the Judicial Arm both before and after.”

It claimed that Onnoghen owns “sundry accounts primarily funded through cash deposits made by himself up to as recently as 10th August 2016 which appear to have been run in a manner inconsistent with financial transparency and the code of conduct for public officials.”

It alleged that Onnoghen made five cash deposits of $10,000 each on March 8, 2011 into Standard Chartered Bank Account 1062650; two separate cash deposits of $5000 each and four deposits of $10,000 each on June 7, 2011.

Five similar cash deposits of $10,000 followed on June 27, 2011, and another four deposits of $10,000 each the following day.

Onnoghen, according to the petition, failed to declare his assets immediately after taking office, contrary to section 15 (1) of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act; and that he did not comply with the constitutional requirement for public servants to declare their assets every four years during their career.

It added that the CJN appeared “to have suppressed or otherwise concealed the existence of these multiple domiciliary accounts owned by him, as well as the substantial cash balances in them.”

It said the CJN’s financial transactions appeared suspicious and not justifiable by his lawful remuneration at all material times.
