IGP Idris Clocks Retirement Age Today

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, is expected to retire from the Nigeria Police Force today (Monday), having clocked the mandatory retirement age of 60.

But there had been speculations that his tenure might be extended by the presidency, which seemed to think that his removal might affect their expectations for the 2019 general elections.

But various groups, including the Coalition of United Political Parties, had opposed the planned tenure elongation.

Idris, who was the 18th indigenous IG, was born on January 15,1959 and enlisted into the force in 1984.

He was appointed IG on March 21, 2016, by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The President is expected to announce an acting IG pending confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council which is comprised of the President as the Chairman; state governors; the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and the IG.

Buhari left the nation guessing about his next move last week when he said he would make a decision on Idris’ tenure soon. Idris spent some part of Monday at the Presidential Villa, where he held a closed-door meeting with Buhari.

CJN Onnoghen's Case: APC, PDP In War Of Words

The imminent arraignment of Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnoghen before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has pitted the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The ruling party yesterday took exception to an allegation by the PDP that APC and its candidate in the February 16 presidential election, President Muhammadu Buhari, are behind the CJN’s ordeal.

PDP spokesman Kola Ologbodiyan accused the President and the APC of being desperate to remove Justice Onnoghen because of the forthcoming elections.

Ologbodiyan, who spoke for the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation (PPCO), alleged that the ruling party was on a mission to annex the judiciary.

But the APC fired back through its Publicity Secretary Lanre Issa-Onilu, accusing the PDP of trying to hoodwink Nigerians into believing that the allegations against the CJN had political motives.

Issa-Onilu said the interest shown so far by the PDP in the CJN matter since it was brought to the limelight on January 7 had given the party out of having some unholy alliances with the judiciary.

He said the law should be allowed to run its course.

The APC spokesman urged Nigerians to caution the opposition party over what it called virulent attacks on the party and institutions of government.

Nigeria, Issa-Onilu said, is bigger than any political party or any political interest.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, Issa-Onilu also faulted the decision of the CJN not to appear before the CCT to answer charges bordering on false assets declaration preferred against him.

He alleged that such a decision could have been based on the suggestions of PDP governors from the Southsouth, who after their emergency meeting in Abuja on Sunday, urged the CJN to ignore the court summons.

The APC, he said, will not be drawn into debating the legality or sponsored conspiracies of the CCT trial because it believes it was an opportunity for the Chief Justice to exonerate himself and prove his innocence in the matter, adding that the issue concerning the CJN should be allowed to follow the due process of law.

He said the APC believed that democratic and constitutional institutions must be allowed to operate without interference and undue pressure from partisan and sundry interests as being done by the PDP and its cronies.

He said: “While we would not want to be lured into discussing issues that are presently before the courts and for which any respectable political party hoping to hold positions of responsibility should restrain itself, we regret to suggest that the PDP’s attempt to hoodwink Nigerians into believing that there is a political motive behind the allegation brought against the CJN might itself be indicative of some unholy alliances.

“The likely affinity existing between the PDP and a section of the judiciary is further accentuated by the nonappearance of Justice Onnoghen before the CCT on Monday (yesterday), in line with the suggestions made by the PDP governors from the Southsouth on Sunday.

“Are Nigerians expected to see this as a mere coincidence? Is the PDP and their governors acting a script? Haven’t we missed an opportunity to show confidence in an institution headed by the CJN?

“This becomes more worrisome knowing that the PDP’s campaigns have been receiving a cold shoulder everywhere they have gone to and it has become apparent the party and its presidential candidate are facing imminent defeat in the February 2019 elections and may be searching for some unorthodox means of forcing itself on the Nigerian people.

“If this were not so, the PDP should, before coming to these distracting conclusions, have taken cognisance of the facts of the allegations made against the CJN and his admission to the facts so stated.

“The only logical conclusion in the circumstance is that realising the refusal of Nigerians to allow the deception of the PDP con them into returning the party to power, the opposition party has alongside some pliable human rights activists devised a plot to distract the APC and indeed the good people of Nigeria from addressing the very important issues on the APC’s manifesto in the electioneering process.

“We have also noticed the very dangerous attempt to designate the CJN’s arraignment along ethnic and religious lines thereby trying to heat up the polity by evoking primordial sentiment which would do the country no good. This is an ungodly ploy when we consider that the CJN is an officer of the federation rather than that of any region.

“We therefore urge all Nigerians of good conscience to caution the PDP as the country is bigger than any political party or the interest it represents, and nothing should stop the country’s steady march into sustainable democratic governance.

“In our earlier statement on the CJN’s CCT trial, we had noted the PDP’s shocking and innate proclivity to defending cases of corruption anytime it arises. The call by the PDP’s Southsouth governors for the CJN’s boycott of the CCT trial further cements our position. Let it be reiterated that nobody, no matter how highly placed, should be above the laws of the land.

“We wish to put on record that the virulent attack that has come from the PDP in the wake of the trial of the CJN over alleged false asset declaration is particularly worrisome and suspicious when the PDP has, in fact, called for the removal of virtually all heads of government arms, particularly the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Inspector-General of the Police over frivolous issues.

“While we will not be drawn into debates on the legality and sponsored conspiracies of the CCT trial, we insist that our democratic and constitutional institutions must be allowed to operate without interference and undue pressure from partisan and sundry interests as being done by the PDP and its cronies.

“The CCT trial is a legal matter; let the law run its course. The CJN must go through the instrumentalities of the courts, more importantly as an institution he represents. Indeed, this is the true test of our constitution, rule of law and will deepen democracy.

“Where there are contestations on institutional procedures, we must allow same institutions perform their functions unhindered, autocorrect if necessary and set good precedence on future matters. This is the only way we can build strong and lasting institutions.”

Also in a statement by Ologbondiyan, the PDP berated the President and the APC for, according to him, attempting to blackmail Nigerians who have raised a voice against the arraignment of the CJN before the CCT.

It accused the ruling party of attempting to subdue and annex the judiciary owing to agitation by Nigerians for the prosecution of the President’s cronies and some APC leaders for alleged corruption.

The statement reads: “The Buhari Presidency and APC in turning around to fight Nigerians have further exposed their desperation to replace Justice Onnoghen with a pliable CJN, who will execute their plots to use the courts to detain opposition leaders as well as vocal members of the Civil Society during the elections.

“It is now crystal clear to all Nigerians that apart from failing woefully in all its promises, the APC and its presidential candidate, President Buhari, are beginning to manifest their autocratic attributes..."

Foreigner Sits On The Floor At Lagos Airport Due To Lack Of Adequate Seats

At the General Aviation Terminal, Ikeja – more popularly known as Murtala Mohammed Local Airport 1, some foreigners were seen siting on the floor while waiting to board their flights yesterday.

These individuals decided to assume the sitting position due to the insufficient seating arrangement for travelers at the departure hall of the airport.

Ordinarily, due to the limited amount of seats at the departure hall, more travelers are left to stand. However, these foreigners decide to defy the norm by finding seating positions on the floor, probably because they were tired of standing.

Akpabio Being Protected By Presidency - Group Alleges

A group of concerned Nigerians under the umbrella of Civil Society Groups for Accountability and Probity have accused the Federal Government of shielding a former Governor of Akwa Ibom state and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Godswill Akpabio.

The group also urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to synergize with the Code of Conduct Bureau and the Code of Conduct Tribunal to ensure Akpabio is brought to book.

Secretary-General of the group, Jonathan Ogwuche, who spoke on Monday in Abuja while making a submission to the EFCC, explained that the group is committed to the fight against corruption and strengthening of institutions, which the present administration and the EFCC have led with unprecedented milestones achieved already.

He, therefore, called on the Federal Government to commence actions and activities that would lead to the prosecution of Akpabio.

He noted that for such fight to be sustained, there should be no sacred cows, stressing that the Senator who has gotten his hands contaminated with proceeds of corruption and abuse of public also must also be made to face the consequence of their actions.

The group recalled that in October 2015, the commission quizzed Senator Godswill Akpabio over allegations of fraud to the tune of N108.1bn following a petition by one Leo Ekpenyong and is still awaiting the outcome of that investigation as unfortunately nothing has been heard to that effect while the suspect moves around freely.

“Consequently, sequel to our independent investigation, we want to bring the following crucial findings to the notice of your esteemed Office for further investigation and prosecution.

“In 2007 Senator Akpabio claimed to have eight ( buildings, while in 2011 he declared 10 (ten) buildings.

“Curiously however and of worrisome note, in 2016 following an investigative report by an online media, it was alleged that he was among those with properties in Dubai ( annexure 1)”, it stressed.

According to the group, contrary to claims by Sen. Akpabio, “the following outlandish properties located at the underlisted addresses could also be traced to him as follows: Plot 5 Ikogosi Spring Close, off Katsina-Ala Crescent, Maitama-Abuja; Plot 28 Colorado Close, Maitama; 22 Probyn Road, Ikoyi, Lagos and Plot 23 Olusegun Aina Street, Parkview, Lagos”.

The rest of their allegations made available to newsmen reads: “Clearly, these properties have been linked to the Senator. It has become pertinent that we bring to your notice the salient fact that these properties are conspicuously missing in the asset declaration forms of Senator Akpabio (see annexure 2)

“With the exception of a Bedford armour Bus which he claimed to be a gift, cars declared in 2007 were copied and pasted in 2011. This doesn’t represent the reality on the ground as he is known to move about in a fleet of cars.

“His child, Iniabasi who is said to have a property (duplex) in Abuja (in 2007 declaration) (at Games village) acquired on 1-1-2005 worth a value of N16.9m has an annual income of just N350,000, while in 2011declaration, the value remains unchanged.

“The source of the house is questionable. We can incontrovertibly submit that Senator Akpabio freely dished out the finances of Akwa Ibom State to his children, friends and other family members while corruptly enriching himself with same at the detriment of the State.

“We thus humbly request that the Chairman of EFCC use his esteemed office and investigative arsenal to review all prevailing and emerging findings on the Senator to unravel allegations of fraud against him.

“This investigation has become expedient in order to disabuse the minds of Nigerians with the notion and perception that the anti-corruption war has some sacred cows. If the Chief Justice of Nigeria can be dragged before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, we see no reason why Sen. Godswill Akpabio is being shielded from prosecution.

“Therefore, in the spirit of equality before the law, the EFCC is hereby called upon to synergize with the Code of Conduct Bureau and the Code of Conduct Tribunal to ensure Akpabio is brought to book”.

'Father Of DNA' James Watson Stripped Of Honors Over More Ugly Racism Comments

The acclaimed Nobel Prize-winning scientist James Watson will be forever remembered as one of the 'fathers of DNA'. But also as something much worse.

In a resurfaced controversy that further dims the shine of one of the 20th century's most esteemed scientists, Watson – awarded the Nobel in 1962 for his role in the discovery of DNA's 'double helix' molecular structure – has been stripped of academic titles after repeating offensive racist views that began to shred his reputation over a decade ago.

After new racist comments by Watson surfaced in the recent PBS documentary American Masters: Decoding Watson, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) – the pioneering research lab Watson led for decades – had finally had enough.

"Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory unequivocally rejects the unsubstantiated and reckless personal opinions," CSHL said in statement.

"Dr. Watson's statements are reprehensible, unsupported by science, and in no way represent the views of CSHL… The Laboratory condemns the misuse of science to justify prejudice."

In the new documentary, Watson states: "There's a difference on the average between blacks and whites on IQ tests. I would say the difference is, it's genetic."

It's not the first time Watson has come under fire for stating these kinds of beliefs.

In 2007, Watson created a furore after he was quoted as saying he was "inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa" because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not really".

Giant Crocodile Eats Scientist Alive After Jumping 8ft To Drag Her Into Enclosure

A scientist was eaten alive by a 17ft long crocodile after being dragged into its enclosure while she fed it.

Deasy Tuwo, 44, was giving the crocodile, named Merry, lumps of meat last Friday morning in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

But the beast stood on its hind legs and leaped an 8ft high concrete wall to pull the researcher into the shallow water.

Horrified staff at the facility - named the CV Yosiki Laboratory -  made the grim discovery at around 8.45am when they noticed a "strange shape" in the water.

They then saw the crocodile laying on the ground with Deasy's savaged body in its jaws.

The reptile had ripped off Deasy's left arm and mutilated her upper torso.

Rescue workers battled to retrieve Deasy's body from the croc, which thrashed violently every time they tried to approach it.

Merry was pictured strapped to a flat-bed truck to be taken for medical tests to confirm that he had eaten the body parts.

Friends describe Deasy as a "quiet person" who loved animals.

Former Colleague Merry Supit said: "She was the head of the lab. A quiet person. We're confused about how this has happened.

"The crocodile eats chicken, tuna and meat. Everything must be fresh, he doesn't want to eat if it's frozen or has died a few days"

Deasy's colleague Erling Rumengan said: "We were curious when we looked at the crocodile pool, there was a floating object, it was Deasy's body.

"We were afraid to touch it and we immediately reported the incident at the Tombariri police station.

"It's possible the crocodile jumped from the side. Maybe it's because the crocodile was still full, it didn't finish eating her body."

Staff said that Merry had been an aggressive animal that had previously attacked and killed another crocodile that had been in its pool

The crocodile will be evacuated to a wildlife rescue center in Bitung district where tests will be carried out on its stomach.

Céline Dion Reportedly Pulling R. Kelly Collab ‘I’m Your Angel’ From Streaming

The list of artists who want nothing to do with R. Kelly is growing. TMZ reportsthat Céline Dion will also pull her collaboration with the accused abuser following Lady Gaga’s decision to do the same last week.

Her team is reportedly in the process of yanking Dion and Kelly’s Grammy-nominated 1998 duet “I’m Your Angel,” which Kelly also produced and wrote, from all streaming services. The song went No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for six weeks. Gaga also removed her Kelly collab “Do What U Want (With My Body)” from streaming, sharing a statement that she supported Kelly’s alleged victims and that the song was a result of unresolved trauma from her own s*xual assault as a teenager.

“If I could go back and have a talk with my younger self I’d tell her to go through the therapy I have since then,” she said.

Multiple artists, including Chance the Rapper and Phoenix, have distanced themselves from Kelly in the wake of renewed allegations of his alleged sexual abuse spurred by the bombshell Lifetime doc Surviving R. Kelly.

(While a select few, like French Montana, have clumsily attempted to express support.) According to a new TMZ report, Kelly’s label RCA/Sony won’t fund or release any new music from him for the foreseeable future as it looks into voiding his contract. The report also noted that artists have been turning down Kelly collaborations left and right. Kelly is currently under investigation in both Georgia and Illinois regarding his alleged s-x crimes.

Court Stops Justice Onnoghen’s Arraignment

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday, halted plans by the Federal Government to dock the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, over his alleged non declaration of assets.

The court, in a ruling that was delivered by Justice Evelyn Maha, restrained FG from going ahead with the planned arraignment, following two ex-parte applications that were moved by two separate groups.

Jordan King, Foreign Ministers Of France & Iran In Separate Visits To Iraq

Jordan’s King Abdullah and the foreign ministers of France and Iran made separate visits today to Iraq, an ally of Tehran, amid U.S. attempts to rally allies against the Islamic Republic as Washington starts withdrawing troops from neighboring Syria.

King Abdullah’s visit, his first since 2008, follows a week after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stopped off in both countries at the start of a Middle East tour meant to mobilize Arab countries against Iran and reassure them over the planned U.S. troop withdrawal from Syria.

The Jordanian king was greeted by President Barham Salih on a red carpet at Baghdad airport before heading to meet Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi. Salih welcomed the visit as strengthening “joint interests and security”.

Pompeo, who was in Riyadh on Monday, promoted a planned Middle East Strategic Alliance (MESA) that would include Gulf Arab states, Jordan and Egypt. Washington is seeking to weaken Shi’ite Muslim Iran, Israel’s arch-foe in the region, with renewed sanctions and the support of Sunni Arab allies.

In Iraq, Washington has made overtures to officials with vague pledges of greater economic cooperation and has pressured Baghdad to stop importing Iranian gas.

But the planned withdrawal from Syria of 2,000 U.S. troops, announced by President Donald Trump last month, alarmed U.S. allies across the region, including Israel, which worries that the move could embolden Iran.

Pompeo’s tour came weeks after the announcement, and after a surprise trip by Trump to a U.S. military base in Iraq that included no meetings Iraqi leaders, prompting criticism from politicians.

Meghan Markle Reveals When Her Baby Will Arrive

The Duchess of Sussex let slip her baby's due date as she chatted to well-wishers in Birkenhead today.

Meghan, 37, revealed that she is six months pregnant, with her first child expected in late April as she met locals in the Merseyside town during her and Prince Harry's first joint engagement of the year.

She also revealed the couple don't know whether they're having a boy or a girl, as they want it to be a 'surprise'.

The brief exchange took place as Meghan, glowing in a red wrap coat worn over a figure-hugging £107 purple dress from Babaton by Aritizia, chatted to locals who had gathered to meet her and Harry.

While Kensington Palace have not publicly revealed Meghan's due date, royal fans had previously speculated that Baby Sussex could be expected as early as March due to her blossoming baby bump.

Meghan paired her colourful dress with a £1,695 Gabriela Hearst leather 'bowling' bag and vertiginous red stilettos and, in a return to her signature style, the duchess ditched the sleek chignon she's been sporting in recent weeks in favour of a relaxed 'messy' bun as she and Harry charmed the locals who had gathered to see them.

Her £1,085 red coat, believed to be a new addition to her wardrobe, is from Canadian brand Sentaler and the duchess has worn the brown version previously in Sandringham.

Rastafarian Father Sues School For Kicking Out Daughter Over Dreadlocks

A Rastafarian dad in Nairobi has moved to the High Court in a bid to defend his Form One daughter’s dreadlocks.

The father, through counsel Wambui Shadrack has sued the Board of Governors of Olympic High School in Kibra for sending home the newly admitted Form One girl ordering that she shaves her dreadlocks to be accepted in the school.

The petitioner alleges that the child reported to school on January 10, 2019 and commenced her Secondary education with excitement and joy. He also said the daughter was in class when she was summoned by the deputy head teacher who sent her away ordering that she only returns to school after shaving her dreadlocks.

“I have sought audience with the deputy head teacher, headmaster and education officer based in Kibra and explained that the dreadlocks are as a result of cultural and religious beliefs and no one has listened to us,” says the father.

The parent states that his, wife and their five children are members of the Rastafarian Society of Kenya as well as ardent followers of the Rastafarian religion.

He adds that his fourth-born daughter, aged 15, and who is the subject of the suit, attended and completed her primary school education at the Shadrack Kimalel Primary School, Ngumo and scored 282 marks in her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education with no interference with her hairstyle.

Further, the applicant avers that significant to their religious beliefs, he together with the entire family, keep dreadlocks not as a fashion statement but as a clear distinction between themselves and non-rastas.

The matter was certified as urgent and court directed the advocate to serve all respondents pending inter parties hearing on January 16, 2018.

Senegal Court Bars Two Opposition Leaders From Presidential Election

Senegal's Constitutional Court on Monday authorised five candidates, including outgoing head of state Macky Sall, to contest presidential elections next month but blocked two prominent opposition figures.

The seven-member court barred, as expected, former Dakar mayor Khalifa Sall and ex-minister Karim Wade because of convictions for misuse of funds.

The four other candidates in the February 24 vote will be a rising opposition MP, Ousmane Sonko; former prime minister Idrissa Seck; Madicke Niang, an associate of former president Abdoulaye Wade; and El Hadji Sall, of the Unity and Assembly Party (PUR).

The list published on Monday was provisional, and candidates have until January 20 to file any appeal.

‘I Don’t Know What Came Over Me’, Man Who Killed Wife, Sons Said

The police in Benin Monday paraded Uwaila Idehen, the 35-year-old man who shot and killed his wife and two sons in Benin, Edo State.

The incident occurred on Sunday at Ovbioge village, in Ovia North-East Local Government Areas of the state.

Uwaila who confessed to killing the victims said he did not know what came over him when he carried out the act.

He alleged that he bought the English-made double barrel rifle from a late police officer, licensed it and sometimes use it for hunting.

He said, “I am a tipper driver. We are two children in my family, my elder sister and me. I am 35 years old. My wife had three children for me, a girl and two boys. The girl is six years, and the boys were three and two years old respectively.

“I don’t know what came over me, and I was not drunk. Due to the nature of my job, my wife always accused me of having affairs with other women, but it is not true.

“At times, when she sees me with my female customers, she will start an argument with me, but I always assure her that there was nothing like that and that my concern was how to take care of the three kids we had together.

“I always walk away whenever she got me provoked but that Sunday, I don’t know what came over me. Instead of just leaving the house, I picked up my gun and shot through the door and the bullet pierced through the plywood door and hit my wife and the two boys. The girl narrowly escaped.”

The state Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, said the suspect would be charged for murder and perhaps unlawful possession of a firearm.
