UNILAG Launches First Campus TV Station

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has set the pace with its first campus television station in Nigeria. The station, which operates on Channel 184, will be transmitted on StarTimes digital broadcast platform.

It will deliver local, national and international programmes.

At the launch of the station, Vice Chancellor Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe said UNILAG TV would be a reference point in sport, documentaries, entertainment as well as an instrument of educational advancement for the promotion of the cultures of the school’s immediate environment.

He added: “UNILAG TV Channel 184 will have a time belt for our Distance Learning Teaching packages. In other words, UNILAG TV will serve as an instructional facility for our Distance Learning students.

“The station will promote the culture of our immediate communities, regularly highlighting the ideas, languages, customs, folklores and social behaviours of our immediate communities, in line with the provision of the National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC’s) code.”

In line with the university’s entrepreneurship and skills acquisition programme, Ogundipe said the station would be a platform for unleashing the potentials of students.

The vice chancellor said the station would not be limited to students in the Art faculty, adding that it would also be used as a medium to keep students informed of the happenings in the university through its one-hour news.

The chairman of UNILAG Multi-Media Ventures, Prof Muyiwa Falaye, said the station would run in accordance with the codes of the NBC.

Dismissed Policeman Caught Stealing In Lagos

Luck ran out on a dismissed policeman, Usman Zubairu, when he was apprehended for allegedly stealing motorcycles from unsuspecting riders in Lagos.

It was gathered that the man, who was dismissed from service in 2014, operated under the guise of being an active policeman to deceive his victims.

Zubairu met his Waterloo while he was about to play same trick on a motorcyclist.

One of the victims, Chinda Ayuba, said he agreed to release his motorcycle to Zubairu because he believed that he was a policeman.

He stated, “A man stopped my motorcycle and introduced himself as a policeman. He told me to take him to Ijora from the Maroko area of Lagos, and I told him that I could not go there. He begged me to help him and promised that no policeman would arrest me.

“While on our way, he saw two boys and asked me to stop. He asked the boys what happened and they explained that some policemen had seized their motorcycles. He asked the boys to give him N1,000 each in order to assist them to get their motorcycles back. He then collected my motorcycle and asked me to wait with the two boys. I waited till sunset but he did not come back with my motorcycle.”

Another victim, Abdulmalik Isah, said Zubairu identified himself as a mobile policeman and took him to the Maroko Police Station where his motorcycle was stolen, The Punch reports.

The 26-year-old stated, “He claimed to be a mobile policeman and made me to take him to the Maroko Police Station. On getting there, he asked me to follow him inside, which I did.

“He told me to wait for him at the station that he wanted to buy something outside. After some time, I decided to come out to check my motorcycle and I could not find it where it was parked. I waited from 2pm till 6pm before I made a report at the police station.”

Isah added that Zubairu was apprehended and handed over to the police when he tried to steal another motorcycle from a rider in his area.

The Adamawa State indigene, however, said he went into stealing as a means of livelihood after he was dismissed from the police force.

The suspect stated, “I was recruited to the Nigeria Police Force in 2001 and I was later mobilised to the Mopol 9 Squadron in Kano State. In 2014, I killed a man while on duty and I was dismissed. I was charged to court for murder and while I was awaiting trial in prison, the family of the deceased decided to withdraw the case from the court in 2017.

“I came to Lagos in August 2018 and because I didn’t have a means of livelihood, I started stealing and re-selling motorcycles.

“I have stolen about four motorcycles and I sell the motorcycles to one Yerima at Tin Can, Apapa, Lagos. I only get to see Yerima between 3.30am and 4.30am, because he is always on night duty.”

Zubairu was subsequently arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on two counts of stealing.

The police prosecutor, Michael Unah, said the offences contravened Section 280 and was punishable under Section 287(5)(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The charges read, “That you, Usman Zubairu, sometime in September 2018, at Ketu area of Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal one Bajaj motorcycle valued at N220,000, property of one Chinda Ayuba.

“That you, Usman Zubairu, on October 10, 2018, around 4pm at the Bar Beach area of Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal one Bajaj motorcycle valued at N215,000, property of one Abdulmalik Isah.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The presiding magistrate, Mr A.A. Fashola, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N80,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Fashola said the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the court.

He added that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case till February 18, 2019.

Okorocha, Six Others Summoned To APC Disciplinary Panel

A disciplinary committee set up by the Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has summoned the state governor, Rochas Okorocha to face a panel over his activities.

Okorocha and six others were invited to appear before the committee in Owerri, the state capital, on Wednesday (today).

Others invited are the APC candidate for Imo East Senatorial District, Chief Emma Ojinere; House of Representatives candidate for Ezinihitte Mbaise/Ahiazu Mbaise Federal Constituency, Mr Raphael Igbokwe; Ehime Mbano/Ihitte Uboma/Obowo Federal Constituency’s candidate, Chike Okafor; Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr Ugonna Ozuruigbo; Mr Eddy Iheanacho; and a governorship aspirant, Mr Obinna Mbata.

New IGP Adamu Reverses Ex-IG Idris Last Minute Postings... May Save Four DIGs

There are strong indications that four out of the seven Deputy Inspectors-General of Police in the Nigeria Police Force may leave the force alongside the former Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who retired on Tuesday.

It was gathered that the DIGs, who are senior to the acting IG, Mohammed Adamu, might be forced out of the service to pave the way for him to set up a new management team he could work with.

It was gathered that those that might be affected by the reorganisation include DIG Maigari Dikko in Charge of Department of Finance and Administration; DIG Joshuak Habila, Department of Operations; DIG Emmanuel Inyang, Information and Communications Technology; and DIG Agboola Oshodi-Glover, Logistics and Supply Departments.

Police sources said that DIGs Mohammed Katsina (Research and Planning Department); Sani Mohammed (Training and Development Department); and Peace Madueke-Abdallah (Federal Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department) who were promoted late last year could survive the impending purge of the Police Management Team.

A source stated, “The three DIGs were on the same rank as Adamu last year. In fact, Abdallah was a Commissioner of Police the same time the acting IG was also a CP, so they were almost on the same level. By virtue of this fact, the new police boss may include them in his management team and save their career from sudden death.”

It was gathered that Abdallah, who has about six years to retire, may be the worst casualty of the purge if Adamu decided to dispense with all the police management team members.

The Punch further learnt that the decision to retain any of the very senior officers rested on the acting IG, who is expected to write to the Police Service Commission about his chosen team members.

Acting IG reverses Idris’ last-minute postings
Meanwhile, the new Police Chief has reportedly reversed some last-minute postings and redeployments carried out by Idris few days before his retirement.

It was gathered that the redeployment of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, by the former IG was overturned while other senior officers who were also posted to new commands and formations had been asked to stay action until further notice.

This development, sources said, meant that the redeployment order by Idris would not be obeyed unless sanctioned by the acting IG.

Shortly after meeting with the DIGs in his office at the force headquarters, Adamu was seen going from floor to floor, meeting officers and familiarising himself with his men.

Single Mother Killed By Man She Followed To Hotel Room...

Barely a month after an unidentified woman was murdered in a hotel room in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State Police Command, on Tuesday, said it had arrested the suspected killers.

The main suspect in the murder has also confessed.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Loveth Odah, the main suspects are Mr Lucky Godwin, 48, and his wife, Mrs Onyinyechi Godwin, 39, who are traders at the Mayor Market in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State.

The manager of De Crown Gardens Hotel, located on the Afikpo Road, Abakaliki, Mr Emmanuel Eze, had on December 3, 2018, reported to the police that the decomposing body of an unknown lady was found in one of the rooms of the hotel.

Odah stated that police operatives visited the scene and evacuated the corpse to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy, adding that professional crime busters from the State Criminal Investigation Department were mandated to unravel the mystery surrounding the death in 48 hours.

Lucky, according to the police, confessed to the crime and admitted that he was responsible for the murder of the lady found dead at De Crown Gardens Hotel, Abakaliki, on December 6, 2018.

He was quoted as saying in a document made available to journalists by the PPRO that he stabbed Ugwu, stole her two-year-old daughter, whom he sold to an orphanage at the Akwukabi Etche community in Rivers State.

It was gathered that the suspect also ran away with the murdered woman’s two-year-old daughter after he had killed the mother.

Lucky was quoted as saying that he brought the lady and her daughter from Enugu on November 30, 2018, and they all lodged in the hotel, where he gave his name as Uchenna Awoke in the guests’ register.

He alleged that he was assisted in the act by the hotel’s gateman, Monday Onwe, who, according to him, gave him the knife with which he murdered the lady, adding, “The same gateman kept watch while I escaped with the dead woman’s baby.

“I paid the gateman the sum of N30,000 as a reward for his assistance.”

He also confessed that he and his wife sold their first son, Emmanuel Godwin, to one Dr Arthur Ugo, the alleged owner of AVON Hospital in Iguruata, Rivers State, for N200,000.

The police said they had successfully recovered the three children and that efforts were on to arrest the said Ugo.

Atiku Raises Alarm: INEC Releasing PVC To APC Governors

PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on Tuesday accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of releasing uncollected permanent voter cards to some governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He spoke in Osogbo while addressing a presidential rally of the party held at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo.

Atiku, who had earlier visited the Owa of Obokun of Ileshaland, Oba Gabriel Aromolaran and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in their palaces, said President Mohammadu Buhari, failed all the promises made before his election in 2015, and deserved to be voted out.

Atiku said, “This government came and said they were going to give you jobs. Have they given you the jobs? They said they were going to grow the economy. Have they grown the economy? We are in recession. In fact, we are the headquarters of poverty in the whole world. That is where they took us to.

“They said they were going to secure our country, instead of securing our country, we have insecurity in three to four zones of the country. Have they delivered on all these three? Why should you then vote for them?

“Now, listen to this very carefully, we have information that INEC has been giving uncollected PVCs to the APC governors. So if a voter comes to your polling booths and you don’t know him, don’t allow him to vote because they want to steal your votes.

“I promised restructuring. In five to six months, I will start that and I mean it. I said I am going to give youths 40 per cent of my government and I mean it. I said I am going to give women 30 per cent of my government and I mean it. Mark my words, I am not Buhari.”

Update On The Deadly Attack At Kenya Hotel, Many Killed

Suspected terrorists have attacked a luxury hotel complex in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, with several people killed, BBC reports.

Gunfire and blasts were heard at the compound in the Westlands District of the Kenyan capital, which houses the DusitD2 hotel as well as offices.

The Somalia-based militant group al-Shabab claimed it was behind the attack.

People, some with bullet wounds and covered in blood, were escorted out of the building by heavily armed police.

The attack began at about 15:00 local time (12:00 GMT). Kenyan media say the gunmen arrived at the complex by car, shot their way past guards, threw bombs at vehicles in the car park and entered the building.

A woman working in a neighbouring building told Reuters, “I just started hearing gunshots and then started seeing people running away raising their hands up and some were entering the bank to hide for their lives.”

Police then rushed to the scene. One officer told the BBC’s Ferdinand Omondi at the scene, “Things are not good. People are dying.”

Kenyan police chief, Joseph Boinnet, told reporters, “Armed criminals are holding up in the hotel and specialist forces are currently flushing them out.”

The number of victims is unclear. One photographer for Agence France-Presse reported five bodies slumped over tables on a restaurant terrace in the complex.

The five-star DusitD2 hotel has 101 rooms. Located in the Westlands suburb, minutes from the capital’s business district, it has its own spa and several restaurants.

Kenya has seen a number of terror attacks in recent years, most notably in areas close to the Somali border and in the country’s capital.

Drama As 2 Police Commissioners Resume In Lagos: "I Remain In Charge", says CP Edgal

A serious drama played out yesterday at the Ikeja Government Reservation Area (GRA) Headquarters of the Lagos Police Command where two senior officers showed up as Police Commissioners in the state.

Commissioner of Police Imohimi Edgal, who was billed to hand over following his earlier redeployment, resumed at the office and said he remained in charge.

Kayode Egbetokun, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), who was to take over the baton after a joint news conference, arrived at the Command ahead of Edgal.

The handing over stopped due to an “order from the police headquarters in Abuja”.

Reporters were told that the event scheduled for 1:30 pm had been shifted to 3pm.

But few minutes after 3pm, there were jubilations in the Conference Hall where the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and the Area Commanders, waiting for the briefing by the Acting CP converged.

Not quite long, Edgal, who briefed the reporters in the company of Egbetokun, said: “Gentlemen of the press, are you here for the handing over and taking over? Are you here because you like me or you are eager for me to leave? Well, there is a directive that the status quo should remain till further notice.”

“I am sure that Kayode Egbetokun is an old-timer in the command. Our first job as police is order and directive; we were about concluding the handing over and taking over procedure when we were instructed by our bosses from Abuja to suspend action for now. So, there is no change of guard for now,” he said.

Egbetokun, who came with his personal effect and his personal staff, left the command, saying: “We are government agents and we are always taking directives.”

As Edgal was leaving for Abuja to meet with the Acting Inspector-General of Police, (IG), Mohammed Adamu, there was gunshot salute.

The policemen attached to Edgal’s convoy shot four times into the air to celebrate the “good news.”

On arrival, Egbetokun’s car had been parked at CP’s parking lot while Edgal’s car was parked at another place.

It was gathered that as the duo was having a closed-door meeting, a phone call, believed to be from the IG’s Office came in and directed that the change of guard be put on hold.

After the announcement, Egbetokun’s vehicle was replaced at the parking lot with Edgal’s.

How Innocent Boy Spent 2 Years In Prison For A Crime He Didn't Commit (Photos)

Happiness was visible on the face of a teenage street hawker after he was released from prison recently. He had spent as much as two years for a crime he didn't commit.

The 17-year-old hawker identified as John Ogbonna was falsely accused of armed robbery and remanded in Ogwashi Uku prison in Delta state for two years.

After thorough investigation by Behind Bars Initiative (BBI), it was learnt that the young man was innocent of the charges labelled against him by the Delta state police command.

It was gathered the boy had a misunderstanding with a motorist while he was selling wrist watches along Okpanam road in Asaba and the man reportedly used SARS to lock him up. Just like that, he was branded an armed robber by Nigeria Police.

John celebrated his release with the BBI team shortly after regaining freedom.

What I Will Do As New Police Boss - IGP Adamu

The newly-appointed acting Inspector General of Police Abubakar Mohammed Adamu has said that he would stick by the rules in piloting the affairs of the police.

Speaking after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari alongside his predecessor, Ibrahim Idris, Adamu said he would work hard to address the insecurity challenges facing the country.

He told State House reporters: ”We know that there are security challenges that we need to tackle in the country: issues of kidnapping, abduction and other security challenges. From the strategies put in place by the former IGP, we will restrategize and make sure that we tackle these challenges squarely.

“On the elections, you have heard from the former IGP, adequate arrangement has been made to make sure that free and fair and credible elections take place in Nigeria. We are going to build up on the strategies put in place to make sure that we have hitch-free elections in the country.

“Well, we are professionals. We are going to stick by the rules, we are going to do the right thing. We will not go outside the ethics of our job to do things that are untoward; everybody will be given level playing ground to play his or her politics.”

MC Oluomo Resurfaces, Still Recovering In Hospital (Photos)

A popular leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, and All Progressives Congress member, Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo appears to be gradually recovering from his stab wounds.

He was seen on camera with his friend, Taye Currency who is a fuji musician.

In the clip, MC Oluomo appeared frail, weak, sluggish and
reluctant to talk as he managed to put up smiles for the camera in an apparent move to debunk rumours that he had quietly died after being reportedly stabbed twice with a poisonous knife.

It is not clear if MC Oluomo will be fit for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Lagos State where he is expected to play a major role as a 'mobilizer' for the ruling APC in the Oshodi Local Government Area.

CJN Onnoghen and President Buhari Meet Face To Face

President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, were all smiles as they shook hands at the Armed Forces Remembrance Day on Tuesday.

Buhari's encounter with Onnoghen becomes significant following reports from government sources that the President is unaware of the actions by the anti-corruption agencies to try Onnoghen.

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, also denied that his boss demanded the resignation of the CJN.

Onnoghen declined appearing in court on Monday, claiming that the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, has no right to try him over false assets declaration charge by the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB.

Atleast 11 Dead In Attack At Nairobi Hotel Complex

Kenyan security forces have secured the buildings in Nairobi where gunmen mounted a deadly attack today, a government official said.

"The security teams have evacuated scores of Kenyans and other nationalities from the (hotel and office) buildings," Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i said in a statement. "We are now in the final stages of mopping up the area and securing evidence and documenting the consequences of these unfortunate events."

At least 11 people have been killed during what police described as a "suspected terror attack" at the complex in the Kenyan capital.

Heavy gunfire and an explosion sent people running for their lives today at the compound in an affluent neighborhood. Footage from the scene showed armed officers escorting office workers and injured people to safety as the sound of shots rang out. Cars in the compound could be seen aflame as a helicopter flew overhead.

The coordinated attack began at a bank inside the complex, with an explosion targeting three vehicles in the parking lot, followed by a suicide blast in the hotel foyer, where guests sustained severe injuries, Joseph Boinnet, inspector general of Kenya's national police service, told reporters.

The number of people hurt in the attack has not yet been confirmed, but local hospitals have issued urgent appeals for blood donations.

The Somali Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to SITE Intelligence Group.

A revenue agent at the Abakaliki Rice Mill company complex on Monday evening allegedly beat a Catholic Priest in Ebonyi state, Rev. Fr. Mathew Orie to coma for refusing to part with N500 illegal levy.

The priest, it was gathered, is now at the accident and emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki(FETHA) battling for his life.

The money it was gathered was demanded by a revenue agent at the gate of the rice mill.

Rev. Fr. Orie is the Principal of Girls’ Technical College Agba in Ishielu local government area of the state.

He had gone to the mill to buy rice for students of his school and reportedly paid all necessary revenues that will qualify him to evacuate the rice out of the mill.

But the agent, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, accosted him and demanded that he must be settled before transporting the bags of rice out of the industry.

The priest had wanted to pay the sum of N500 the agent demanded from him when other revenue collectors told him that he has cleared all the revenues.

“Having been told that he has cleared every fees, Fr. Orie decided to carry his goods out of the gate and refused to pay N500 a tout asked him to pay. It was at this point that the tout descended on him and beat him to pulp.

“It was a team of policemen that was contacted that came and carried him to the hospital where he is currently receiving treatment”, a witness said.

Police spokesman, Loveth Odah confirmed the incident.
