Buhari Raises Alarm: Boko Haram Sponsored By Forces Outside Nigeria

Are there foreigners who want Nigeria to remain at war? President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday disclosed that the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents were being sponsored by forces outside Nigeria.

He said the military needed a lot of money for purchase of gadgets, spare parts and arms to completely wipe out the terrorists.

Buhari spoke during a live presidential town hall meeting tagged, “The Candidates” at the Ladi Kwali Conference Centre, Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, on Wednesday.

“We need a lot of money for the military for spare parts, communication gadgets, arms and ammunition. The Boko Haram are certainly supported by forces outside Nigeria,” the President said.

The All Progressives Congress presidential candidate said he became the candidate of the party because of the support of the National Executive Committee.

He said, “I said it much earlier at the National Executive Committee of our party that if my party recommended me to its executive, I would contest. I did that to save time and wide discussions among members of the party.”

When the moderator, Kadariah Ahmed, asked the President to address the allegation that only members of the opposition parties were being hounded in the corruption fight, he said, “I think that is not a fair criticism. I don’t think that there is anybody that is being pointed out as corrupt in the last dispensation that we looked the other way.”

The President was asked by the moderator what he was doing about allegations against members of his cabinet.

She cited the case of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and a petition by a non-governmental organisation against the Minister for Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola.

“I have to be careful. But if there are strong allegations and people have bank accounts, names of companies looted, contracts awarded, then we take them before the courts through the EFCC and the ICPC and we have to trust the system,” Buhari added.

The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, said the case of Lawal was before the EFCC and a directive had been issued for his trial.

He noted that all cases involving members of the cabinet referred to the EFCC would receive attention.

Osinbajo also said the President needed another term to consolidate on the gains of his administration.

“We campaigned on three fundamental issues namely, the economy, the fight against corruption and security. In those three respects, we believe that we have laid very strong foundations and I very strongly believe that we are on to much more progress if given a second opportunity,” Osinbajo said.

Here's Man Who R*ped 78yrs Old Woman In Lagos... He has been dragged to court

The Lagos State Police Command, on Wednesday, arraigned a commercial bus driver, Jelili Lawal, for allegedly raping a septuagenarian.

It was reported that the 78-year-old woman, who was returning to her place of residence in the Ketu area of Lagos, had missed her way when Lawal offered her a lift to her destination.

The woman, who was delighted at Lawal’s offer, never suspected that he had other intentions but he drove to another location, where he allegedly r*ped the victim, The Punch reports.

The state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, had while parading Lawal said, “On Tuesday, January 1, 2019, around 8pm, a woman, 78, met one Jelili Lawal, 41, a bus driver, at Maryland and told him that she had missed her way and did not know how to get to her house in Ketu.

“Jelili Lawal offered to help her. The woman was delighted and she boarded the bus, unknown to her that Lawal had other intentions.

“The suspect drove the victim to a location in Oloti village, off Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja, and r*ped her without regard to her age. While the suspect was at it, the woman let out a cry that attracted someone in the neighbourhood, who quickly called the police and directed them to the location where the cry emanated from.

“That was how the police caught the suspect in the act and rescued the old woman, who was already bleeding from her private parts as a result of the assault on her dignity.”

Lawal was arraigned on Wednesday for r*pe. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Raphael Donny, told the court that the offence was committed on January 1, 2019, around 8pm at Oloti Village, off Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B. O. Osunsanmi, ordered that Lawal should be remanded in the Kirikiri Prison pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

She adjourned the case till February 18, 2019, for hearing.

I Will Privatize NNPC, It's A Mafia Organization – Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, said on Wednesday that he would privatise the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation if elected, describing the state-owned oil firm as a “mafia organisation.”

Atiku was quoted as saying at an interactive session with the business community in Lagos that he would take the step even if doing so would cost him his life.

He explained that he sold the idea to President Olusegun Obasanjo whom he worked with as a deputy between 1999 and 2007 but that the former president did not approve of it.

Atiku said he was convinced that the NNPC would run better if not managed by the government.

He said, “Let me go back to my experience. When we got into office, I walked up to my boss and said, “Sir, there are two mafia organisations in government: one is the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation while the other one is the National Electricity Power Authority.

“I said unless we dismantle these mafia organisations, we cannot make progress. Let’s privatise them… the long and short of this is that I am committed to privatisation as I have said. I swear even if they are going to kill me, I will do it (privatise NNPC).”

Atiku also spoke on how an expert in the petroleum sector influenced his stance on the privatisation of the NNPC.

The former Vice President said, “I asked a Nigerian professor based in America; I said, ‘Prof, do you have a ministry of petroleum in America?’ He said no. I said, ‘Do you have an organisation like the NNPC over there?’ He said no. And America produces oil more than any country? He said yes.

“So I asked him, ‘How do they do it in America?’ and he said taxation, and I decided that I will go by taxation too.”

Atiku criticised the current administration for the delay in passing the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill.

He noted that the level of unemployment in the country was worrying, saying that the lack of adequate jobs could create a bigger problem if left unchecked.

Reactions Trailing FG's Latest Action Against CJN Onnoghen

The Federal Government has ordered that restrictions be placed on five bank accounts belonging to the embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

But the CUPP, the Nigerian Bar Association, a former NBA President, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Chief Edward Ashiekaa (SAN) have faulted the AGF’s directive that the CJN’s accounts be frozen.

Agbakoba, speaking with The Punch on Wednesday, said the AGF could not validly rely on the Presidential Executive Order 6 because the charges the CJN was being tried for were about false assets declaration and not corruption.

He said, “It is not proper for the AGF to issue those directives because he is not being tried on corruption charges. He was charged with false declaration of assets.

“So, for me the AGF has exceeded his power to issue those directives. So I expect that lawyers, of course, will challenge it. The AGF cannot do that.”

Ozekhome said with this, the nation was heading towards full-blown dictatorship.

He said, “They showed their clear intentions when they filed simultaneously a motion that he should excuse himself as the CJN. Somehow, the plan backfired on the government because of the unanimous public uproar and rejection that greeted it and the tactical move of Onnoghen’s lawyers who refused him appearing physically in court.”

Speaking in the same vein, Ashiekaa noted that FG's action was politically motivated.

“You cannot separate what is happening at the CCT from the issue of the freezing of the CJN’s accounts by the AGF. There were claims that the President wasn’t aware. How on earth can you separate these two issues? The order to freeze the accounts was from the AGF who is a SAN and who was supposed to know better.

“He wants to drag the image of the judiciary through the mud because of politics. The judiciary, which is insulated from partisan politics, is now being dragged through the mud,” he added.

So Sad! Husband, Wife & Their Son Die In Terrible Accident

Three persons, on Wednesday, lost their lives in a fatal auto accident that occurred in the Olokuta area on the Ondo-Akure Expressway in the Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State.

It was said that the truck driver took to his heels immediately after the crash.

The victims were suspected to be a couple and their son but their identities had yet to be determined as of the time of filing this report.

According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred around 8am and involved a black Toyota Corolla car with number plate FGB 940 AA, and a blue truck with number plate LND 274 XP.

The eyewitness told The Punch that the two vehicles had a head-on collision as they were going in opposite directions when the accident occurred.

“We heard a loud sound and when we got to the scene, we saw the car under the truck; it took the efforts of the men of the Federal Road Safety Corps to remove the trapped victims under the truck, “ the eyewitness said.

When contacted, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ondo State, Mr Rotimi Adeleye, confirmed the accident, saying the driver of one of the vehicles lost control and collided with the other coming in the opposite direction.

“Three people died in the accident – a man, a woman and a boy – while the driver of the truck could not be found. It was the car that swerved off its lane to collide with the truck that was coming from the other direction.” Adeleye said.

The FRSC boss also stated that the remains of the victims had been deposited in the mortuary of the Ondo State Specialists Hospital, Akure.

Falana Opens Up: Dangerous Precedents Being Set In CJN Case

Human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), has expressed concern about the ‘dangerous precedents’ being set in the charges filed against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Water Onnoghen, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Falana, while speaking on Tuesday in Lagos during the
15th Gani Fawehinmi annual lecture, observed that some of the legal issues already settled by the Supreme Court in the case of Saraki vs Federal Government were being reopened in Onnoghen’s case.

He noted also that the speed with which the various suits filed to challenge the charges against the CJN were heard and ruled upon by the courts was unprecedented.

Falana said, “The most dangerous aspect of what is going on now is that our laws are in trouble. Issues that have been settled by the Supreme Court in the Saraki vs FRN case are being reopened now.

“The question of the appearance of the accused, the question of service; it came up in Saraki’s case. Once you are aware, you have been served. But we are opening it afresh.

“I just saw another disturbing one, the National Industrial Court has waded in to say that the Chief Justice shall not be arrested. Who is talking of arrest? What is the locus standi of the National Industrial Court on the affairs of a judge?

“We are now being told that the Chief Justice is an employee who should be protected by the National Industrial Court. The other one happened yesterday (Monday) when I discovered that a case that was filed at the Federal High Court yesterday (Monday) was processed yesterday, assigned yesterday, heard yesterday and an order was made yesterday. In the last 20 years, it has never happened in any court in Nigeria.

“Please, let us know that we are setting dangerous precedents. And that is why sentiment should not come in.”

He added, “When I said that the proper procedure has not been followed and that the government should withdraw the frivolous charge, I wasn’t talking about the substance of the case, because for me, if you catch an armed robber red-handed and you decide to chop off his hand, you have lost your case; you still have to take him to court and that is what should happen in this case. We must go through the proper channel for dealing with complaints against judges.”

Meanwhile, an Igbo group, Nzuko Umunna, has condemned the planned arraignment of the CJN.

The group, in a statement by its coordinator, Ngozi Odumuko, said, “The circumstances of this planned trial leave much to be desired, not the least because the trial may occasion clear constitutional breaches..."

Miley Cyrus has denied rumors she is expecting a child. 'I am not "egg-xpecting" but it's "egg-celent" to hear everyone is "so happy for us"... We're happy for us too! "Egg-cited" for this next chapter in our lives... Now can everyone leave me alone and go back to staring at an egg?' Miley tweeted Wednesday.

She included a photo of herself walking outside with the viral brown egg placed on her midsection.

The denial comes after OK! Australia reported on Thursday Miley and her husband Liam Hemsworth, 29, were expecting a girl.

'Miley's over the moon because she's carrying Liam's baby... It's a girl, which is what [they] hoped for,' claimed the unnamed source.

I Feel Sad Over CJN Onnoghen's Trial – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says he is feeling sad over the trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen, on allegations of false and non-asset declarations.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) had scheduled Jan. 14 for the arraignment of the CJN.

However, the process was stalled as the CJN failed to appear before the CCT; and a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja also ordered the CCT to halt proceedings.

Osinbajo, who spoke at the 2019 Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (OPAN) conference on Wednesday in Abuja, said that President Muhammadu Buhari had no prior knowledge of the arraignment.

The theme of the conference is “Free Press and Objective Reporting in the 2019 Election Year.’’

According to Osinbajo, Buhari’s approach is that institutions should do their work.

“I can tell you for a fact that he did not even know about this until Saturday evening. He did not even know that there will be any kind of arraignment until Saturday evening.

“He has said categorically, do not interfere with whatever institutions are doing; sometimes, it has consequences such as we have today; such that people say how can such an important person be subjected to a trial without the Federal Government?

“But I can tell you without any equivocation whatsoever that he was not even in the know because it is a specific instruction that he gave.

“So, even where somebody else calls a public officer such as Ibrahim Magu of EFCC and says something or the other, he will say `no, no, no, Mr president has said I can do my work.

“My take is that I would rather not have a situation where senior members of my profession are being tried for an offence; certainly, I will rather not have that kind of situation.

“So, I do not feel particularly good about it; as a matter of fact, I feel very sad; that it is going on at all, that is my position."

Rich Kidnapper Evans Makes More Revelations

An Igbosere High Court in Lagos on Wednesday heard that suspected billionaire kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, made his confessional statement to the police under duress.

Evans told Justice Adedayo Akintoye that he signed papers given to him by the police so as not to be tortured to death.

He insisted that members of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT), which arrested him in 2017, intimidated him by executing suspected criminals in his presence, before assaulting him.

Evans is facing two separate charges, bordering on conspiracy to kidnap, kidnapping and attempted murder, before Justice Akintoye.

In the first charge, he is standing trial alongside Joseph Emeka, Ugochukwu Nwachukwu and Victor Aduba.

In the second charge, he is joined on trial with Joseph Emeka, Linus Okpara and Victor Aduba.

At the resumption of his trial on Thursday, Evans alleged the IGP IRT tortured suspects to death by suffocating them with plastic bags and threatened to do same to him if he failed to cooperate with them.

He claimed that some sheets of papers were brought for him to sign, adding some of the papers were blank while others had written content.

Evans said: “When I asked what I was to sign the police officers slapped my head and even quenched a cigarette on my hand.

“The officers were beating me and told me that if anything happened to me, no one would know. They hit my head and blood was gushing, the scars are still on my head.

“When I saw how five men who were paraded with me were tortured and killed, I agreed to sign the papers with fear of what happened to the other men.”

He also said that the contents of the papers he signed were not read to him and there was no video recording during the statement taking process.

He testified during a trial within a trial conducted to ascertain whether his statement admissible or not. He was led in evidence by his counsel, Mr O. I. Ajanaku.

The defendant was afterwards cross-examined by Lagos State counsel, Dr Jide Martins.

Justice Akintoye adjourned further hearing till January 30.

New IGP Gives First Order To All Police Officers

The acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, has warned officers and men of the force to abstain from unethical conducts capable of tarnishing the image of the force.

IGP Adamu gave the warning at the official handover ceremony on Wednesday.

He urged the police personnel to join him in the course of changing the narratives of policing the country, Nigeria, for good.

The police boss promised to address the issue of welfare of personnel and other reward regimes that had been a problem in the force.

According to him, the absence of this level of leadership has always been the missing link in policing Nigeria.

He said that the lost glory of the force which had remained a concern to governments at all levels and Nigerians would be restored.

“I will provide the highest possible level of professional and responsible leadership to you, while trusting that you shall march hand-in-hand with me as professional colleagues,” he said.

He noted that the upcoming 2019 general elections would be an avenue where professionalism and commitment of the force would be subjected to scrutiny.

Adamu said that the elections were a priority to the leadership of the force, adding that there would soon be deployment of personnel for the elections.

He noted that the force would work with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and sister security agencies for peaceful election.

Adamu urged politicians to assist the police and other law enforcement agencies in sustaining the gains recorded in the country’s democratic journey.

He urged them to play politics within the dictates of the rules guiding it.

“On our part, we assure the nation of our determination to play our roles fairly but firmly toward guaranteeing peaceful electoral process.

“We shall not hesitate to deploy our potent asset to deal firmly and decisively with electoral deviants.

“With your support, I am confident that we have the operational capacity to ensure the success of the elections,” he said.

Oyo Workers Begin Three-Day Warning Strike

The Oyo State government workers today began a three-day warning strike to press home their demands for regular salaries and improved work conditions.

The workers announced this development in a letter of January 14 titled: “Re: Unresolved Labour Issues With The State Government” and addressed to the state governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

In the letter written under the auspices of the Public Service Joint Negotiation Council, the workers said they would be left with no option than to embark on a strike on Wednesday if the government failed to meet their demands by close of work on Tuesday.

In the letter signed by the council’s scribe, Akinfenwa Olabode, the workers said the state government had failed to address the demands they made in a previous letter dated January 7, in which they issued a seven-day ultimatum, hence the storke which started today.

Meghan Markle's 'Real' Reaction To Her Bodyguard Quitting After Just Six Months

Meghan Markle is said to be "gutted" about the reported resignation of her bodyguard.

The unnamed chief protection officer is said to be leaving her role after just six months of working with the Duchess.

She could become the third member of Meghan's staff to quit.

Personal assistant, Melissa Touabti, walked-away from Kensington Palace last year and private secretary Samantha Cohen is also rumoured to be leaving.

Now, an insider has claimed Meghan is "gutted" to lose her female bodyguard, saying: "The Duchess is gutted - so the officer is also upset as she didn't want to leave the team."

The bodyguard is understood to be leaving the Metropolitan Police entirely, after working for the force's diplomatic and royalty protection squad, reports People .

Previously, a royal insider revealed the 37-year-old Duchess, who is expecting her first baby in the spring, felt 'constrained' by the level of security she was surrounded with.

The source told The Daily Telegraph : "Unlike someone who has grown up in the royal family and has been used to having close protection from an early age, it can be constraining.

“Even though she was a famous actress, she could still do what she wanted in the way of getting around freely.

“But in her current role she can’t go anywhere without her protection team, and that’s a massive constraining force on an individual like her.”
