Oshiomhole Cries Out: Retired Generals Conspiring Against Buhari

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has said that the future of Nigeria is not in the hands of retired Generals but in the hands of the electorate.

Oshiomhole also alleged that some retired Generals and former Heads of State are against the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said this yesterday during the APC Presidential Campaign in Minna, Niger State.

He said that there was a plan to replay what occurred when Buhari was the Military Head of State and was removed due to his strict anti-corruption strategies.

“Many of the retired Generals are ganging up against President Buhari, that he will not do eight years while they did more than eight years.

“I remember they did it in the past but this time, the plan will not work. The future of Nigeria is not in the hands of retired Generals or former Heads of State. It is in the hands of the general people.”

CJN Onnoghen Faces Big Challenge As FG Expands Probe

The Federal Government through the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit has launched a probe into the salary account of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, dating back to September 2005.

The probe predates the advent of the Bank Verification Number initiative of the Central Bank of Nigeria and is expected to expose some alleged questionable deposits made into the account of the embattled CJN.

A fact sheet from the NFIU to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), stated that nearly N100m passed through Onnoghen’s salary account with Union Bank Plc between September 2005 and October 2016.

Onnoghen’s salary in 2005 was N240,202 but rose to N751,082.37 in February 2008. However, the funds in his account were said to have surpassed his salary.

The document read in part, “His salary in 2005 was N240,202. 20 and it rose to N751,082.37 in February 2008. The salary remains within range till date.

“However, the turnover in the account from September 2005 to October 2016 was N91,962,362.49.

“He did not spend from the salary account from March 2015 to October 2016. The salary and allowances accumulated to N22,520,636.27 in October 2016 from N6,132,885.24 in March of the same year.”

According to the NFIU, investigations showed that the funds deposited in the account of the CJN are questionable and probably proceeds of crime, The Punch reports.

“From the investigations conducted so far, it is plausible that the payments into the various accounts are bribes. This is because the sources of inflows into his accounts other than the salary account in Union Bank are unknown and probably fraudulent and the nature of the transactions (including structured payments) are not typical of the transactions of a public servant,” the statement added.

The Federal Government had last week filed charges against Onnoghen for allegedly failing to declare some assets before the Code of Conduct Bureau.

Zimbabwe Blocks Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter

Zimbabwe has blocked Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp messaging app amid a crackdown on days of violent protests.

A coalition of local human rights groups says at least 12 people have been killed and many more beaten and tortured by security forces this week.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum accused the authorities of cutting off the internet “to mask the massive human rights violations”.

The protests were sparked by a sharp rise in the price of fuel.

The government has blamed the opposition and political rights groups for the protests, which has seen riot police clashing with protesters in the capital, Harare, and the southern city of Bulawayo after they lit fires and blocked roads using rocks

Billionaire Jimoh Ibrahim's Mother Burnt To Death In Candle Fire

Mrs Theresa Jimoh, the mother of a business mogul, Jimoh Ibrahim, has been killed in a fire that broke out at her house in the Victoria Garden City, Lagos Island, Lagos State.

The fire, which started in the early hours of Saturday, was caused by candlelight.

The victim, who was reported to have slept off while praying at her residence on Road 3, House B8, was burnt to death before the intervention of firefighters from the Lagos State Fire Service.

Her remains were said to have been handed over to officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, who deposited them in a morgue.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Musbau, confirmed the incident, adding that residents on the estate had tried in vain to manage the inferno before the fire service was called.

He said the fire was suspected to have been caused by a lit candle.

Musbau said, “We got the call in the early hours of Saturday and the Lekki Fire Station responded to it. The VGC estate has a fire unit. So, before we were called, they had been trying to contain the fire on their own; but they were overwhelmed. Their vehicle also had a fault.

“When we got there, the fire was well alight. We recovered the woman with the joint efforts of LASEMA officials, who took away her corpse. What we gathered was that she always had prayer sessions, and maybe in the process, she lit a candle and slept off.”

The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the fire started around 2am.

He said, “Someone had heard the woman calling for help, but when they got there, her room was engulfed in fire. The estate fire service and the state fire service worked together to put out the inferno. The corpse was later deposited in a Lagos State general hospital morgue. Investigation is ongoing into the actual cause of the fire.”

Atiku Get To Debate Venue, Didn't See Buhari, Then Walk Away... Challenges Mr President

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the leading opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has boycotted the flagship 2019 presidential debate.

He walked away due to the absence of the incumbent Muhammadu Buhari.

Atiku said, “We came here for a Presidential debate, not a candidacy debate, and I, Atiku Abubakar cannot challenge or question an administration where the man at the helm of the affairs of the nation is not present to defend himself or his policies.

“Afterall, you cannot shave a man’s head in his absence. I do not believe in attacking a man who is NOT here to defend himself.

“As a leader and former vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, let me first apologise to all Nigerians, my fellow candidates and the moderator for the APC Presidential Candidate’s absence in this debate.

“His non-appearance is a slight on ALL of us and our democracy.”

Atiku apologised to other presidential candidates over his decision to boycott the debate, and challenged Buhari to a fresh debate.

“Secondly, with all due respect to my fellow candidates, Fela Durotoye, Oby Ezekwesili, Kingsley Moghalu and to the moderator Mark Sugar and with apologies to all Nigerians here and at home expecting an interesting debate, I regret that I will not be able to go on with this debate due to President Buhari’s absence.

“I, however, challenge President Buhari to choose a date and time for a debate where he will be present and I will be there, hopefully with the other candidates as well. Thank you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

How Customs, Police Officers Released Truck Load of Codein After Receiving Bribe

Last week, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) released a statement that it intercepted a 40-feet trailer with codeine and other illicit drugs in Lagos, but investigation by The ICIR reveals that the same trailer had earlier been impounded by the police after passing through customs.

The haulage truck, which still has the name of Dutch haulage company Centrum Transport and a Dutch registration number, was stopped and confiscated earlier in December by detectives under the IGP X-Squad from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon in Ikoyi, Lagos State.

For days, the vehicle was parked at Alagbon with the tyres deflated until the evening of January 8 when the tyres of the truck were pumped again. By the next morning, the truck had disappeared.

But acting on intelligence, the operatives of investigation and enforcement directorate of NAFDAC, who said they mounted a six-hour surveillance, intercepted the trailer at Oshodi.

In that moment of trying to move the trailer to their warehouse, officers of the Nigeria Customs Service and Nigeria Police Force suddenly appeared at the scene and argument of which agency to take possession of the trailer ensued.

At that scene, police had asked customs officers to go to borders to mind their job because they had earlier collected bribe to let in the truck, a source told The ICIR. Police also brushed off the protest of NAFDAC to confiscate the vehicle by telling the NAFDAC officials that they would sell off the drugs as they had done to other cases referred to them. The source described the altercation as a big battle among the officers of the three enforcement agencies.

Eventually, police took control as the truck was moved to the police’s Area D Command in Mushin SR reports.

Upon joint inspection of the goods in the trailer, it was discovered that it had cartons of Barcadin cough syrup with codeine and other illicit drugs.

This web of conspiracy and fraud is coming less than a year after the Federal Government had announced a ban on the production and importation of cough syrup containing codeine because of its addiction epidemic. The ban had actually followed a public outcry over the abuse of codeine in the country.

Chasing the truck
The ICIR’s reporter had arrived Lagos at night on January 9 after receiving information that the police had impounded a haulage truck carrying illicit drugs, but planned to release the vehicle as those in charge of the case had been bribed. By the time the reporter reached the FCID, Alagbon, on Thursday morning, the truck had been released.

A source, however, told The ICIR that the suspects were charged to court. But at Igbosere Magistrate Court 1 where the case was brought upon, the case file could not be found and the court clerks could not remember any recent case that had to do with importation of illicit drugs.

The clerks told The ICIR that the only way to find out about the case file and what the suspects were charged with was to get hold of the case file number from the prosecutor.

Though the police prosecutor, Henry Obiazi, declined to talk to The ICIR about the case, or the court the suspects were arraigned, or the charge brought against them or even the next adjourned date of the trial, he also declined to disclose the case file number.

In addition, Niyi Ogundeyi, police public relations officer at FCID, Alagbon, said he could not comment on a matter under investigation without authorisation from the police’s headquarters in Abuja.

As at the time the vehicle was driven out of the FCID, Alagbon, it was not clear whether the release was at the instance of a court order or the discretion of the police.

A source who is knowledgeable about the case, told The ICIR that police would not have released the vehicle without charging the suspects to court and that the suspects might have been charged with a lesser crime after they collected bribe. In that instance, the source said, the police could do so to absorb itself of the responsibility for releasing the vehicle.

Magistrate ordered the vehicle’s release
After receiving a huge bribe, police arraigned the suspects at Igbosere Magistrate Court with a charge different from the crime committed by the suspects in order to let them off the hook, a source told The ICIR in confidence.

The suspects: Luke Mba, 38, and Falodun Gbenga, 40, were arraigned on January 3 with two-count charge of allegedly stealing pharmaceutical goods, rather the crime of importing illicit drugs into the country.

The first charge read: “That you Luke Mba ‘m’ and Falodun Gbenga ‘m’ sometimes in December, 2018 at Mazamaza in the Lagos Magistrate District did conspired together to commit felony to wit: having possession of property reasonably suspected to have been stolen and thereby commit an offence punishable under section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.”

Then, the second charge goes thus: “That you Luke Mba ‘m’ and Faladun Gbenga ‘m’ on the same date, place and time in the aforementioned Magisterial District did have in your possession or under your control or unlawfully cartoons of pharmaceutical goods reasonably suspected to have been stolen and thereby commit an offence punishable under section 328(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.”

The case is between the Inspector General of Police and the two suspects. Henry Obiazi who declined to tell The ICIR anything about the case was the police prosecutor while an inspector named Adeleke was the police investigation officer. The matter was subsequently adjourned to February 11.

However, the following day after the arraignment, one of the suspects Faladun Gbanga filed a motion on notice for the release of the truck which the court granted.

“Upon reading the affidavit in support of the motion on Notice deposed to by Gbenga Falodun Male, Adult, Christian, Nigerian Citizen, and a Transporter residing at No. 2, Asumo Akera Street, Mowe Nla, off Gberigbe Road, Ikerodo, Lagos State sworn to and file at the Magistrate Court Registry Igbosere, Lagos dated 4th day of Novemeber, 2019 [Januray 4, 2019] and after hearing N. Lawani of Counsel Claimant/applicant move in terms of his motion paper,” wrote Olufolake Oshin, Chief Magistrate of Igbosere Magistrate Court. “It is hereby ordered: an order releasing on bond to the applicant’s vehicle (truck) with its content impounded and in custody of the Respondent Viz IGP X – Squad.”

A source told The ICIR that the area commander of Area D Command in Mushin, Soji Akinbayo, has commenced an investigation into the circumstances that led to the release of the vehicle by the court and police.

Ban breeds black markek
Few days after officers of the Nigerian Customs Service received accolades for rejecting N150 million bribe to clear containers of Tramadol, this particular haulage truck with prohibited drugs passed through customs.

The drugs were manufactured in India and imported through the Seme land border.

“What is clear is that someone doesn’t want the drugs to get to the public despite the bribes,” a source told The ICIR. “That perhaps explained why NAFDAC was alerted upon the police’s release of the vehicle.”

According to NAFDAC, the trailer was carrying Barcadin with codeine (cough syrup).

“The Agency has resolved to prosecute the suspect in this matter when the police hand him over to us,” said Mojisola Adeyeye, the director general of NAFDAC, in a statement.

Spokesperson of NAFDAC, Abubakar Jimoh, declined to talk about whether or not the agency knew that police had earlier arrested and charged the suspects with a crime that bears less sanction before releasing the vehicle.

He, however, told The ICIR that the agency had stopped issuing a licence for the importation of cough syrups with codeine after the Federal Government announced the ban in May last year.

But despite the ban, cough syrups containing codeine are still being sold on the streets of many Nigerian cities, The ICIR investigation has revealed.

Buhari, APC Frustrated Over Atiku's Trip To US - Party

The leading opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC leadership are frustrated over the successful trip of its presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to the United States of America.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, who stated this at a press briefing in Abuja, stressed that this is the reason the federal government has resorted to mudslinging at the former vice president.

The PDP spokesman was reacting to a statement by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed that Atiku will be questioned over his alleged involvement in the collapse of Bank PHB, once he returns from his US trip.

Ologbondiyan, who is also the director of Media and Publicity, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation (PPCO), said Atiku has no hand in the issues that allegedly led to the collapse of Bank PHB. He stated that the Presidency and the APC should know that Nigerians have seen through their lies, fabrications and frustration, noting that the plot against Atiku is dead on arrival.

“The world already knows that this attempt to mudsling our presidential candidate is coming out of President Buhari’s frustration over Atiku Abubakar’s successful outing in the United States, for which the Buhari Presidency has gone into full hallucination. While we understand that President Buhari and his dysfunctional APC are jittery over Atiku Abubakar’s soaring popularity ahead of the elections, it is reprehensible that Mr. President will descend abysmally low to fabricate outright lies and falsehood in a bid to discredit a more qualified and acceptable presidential candidate.

“The PPCO makes bold to state that Atiku Abubakar has nothing to do with the alleged issues leading to the collapse of Bank PHB, but is an honest and hard-working Nigerian who has no skeleton of any sort in his cupboard, unlike President Buhari, who is now entangled in series of corruption allegations,” he stated.

The opposition spokesman noted that even the Chairman of President Buhari’s Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, had said the Presidency has searched everywhere and could not find anything incriminating against Atiku.

Ologbondiyan noted that, “if anything, the PPCO will want President Buhari to open the books and provide explanation for the N9 trillion stolen under his watch as Minister of Petroleum Resources as detailed in the leaked NNPC memo.

“President Buhari should as well, allow an open inquest into the alleged involvement of his relations in the N1.032 trillion alleged corrupt acquisitions in 9Mobile and Keystone Bank Plc.”

Kano Govt Revokes Contracts Of Contractor Who Filmed Ganduje Bribe Videos

The Kano State Government has revoked three contracts awarded to Tiamin Multi Services Ltd, a company belonging to Aminu Mohammed. Mr Mohammed is believed to be the contractor behind the videos showing the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, receiving money from contractors.

The three projects were worth N1.6 billion.

The state commissioner of information, Mohammed Garba, announced the cancellation at a widely reported press briefing on Friday, on the resolutions of the State Executive Council.

The state government gave “non-performance” as the reason behind revocation, which affected Tiamin and one other company, FNL Engineering Limited. It is unclear if the second company is also linked to Mr Mohammed.

Ezekwesili, Durotoye, Moghalu Slam Atiku, Buhari For Missing Debate

The three Presidential candidates attending the debate organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, on Saturday took turns lambasting President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party for shunning the debate.

A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Kingsley Moghalu of the Young Progressives Party; a former Minister of Education, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili of the Allied Peoples Congress of Nigeria; and motivational speaker, Mr. Fela Durotoye of the Alliance for New Nigeria, described Buhari and Atiku as old men who lacked the ability to answer questions.

The moderator, Mark Sugar, asked the three candidates to react to the absence of the two frontline candidates.

Ezekwesili started by saying Buhari and Atiku had announced their exit from the Presidential race by their action.

She said, “I am not surprised they are not here. They have simply announced their exit from the governance. I think it is important that we acknowledge there is a political class that needs to fade away from our country because the idea that the will of the people to be subjected to the whims and caprices of our politicians should be a total anomaly.

“Today as we focus on the competitive ideas that will develop country if the two dominant parties cared about our people, they would come here to contest ideas on how they will fix Nigeria.”

Durotoye, who spoke next, said the APC and the PDP are two sides of the same coin and asked Nigerians to ensure that the two parties never get into power again.

“This shows that the future is here and old things have passed away. I must say to Nigerians that pride always comes before a fall and every time you feel you don’t need to tell Nigerians what you want to do, it means that you are not there to serve them in the first place but you’re there to rule them.

“We have had 20 years of rulership and rulers do not explain to their subjects what they are going to do. They don’t owe it to them.”

Also speaking, Moghalu said the two men lacked the ability to answer questions properly.

He said, “I am not surprised that the candidates of the APC and the PDP have decided to turn their backs on Nigerians and say the people never meant much in their eyes.

“The reason they are not here are first, arrogance because they believe the people of Nigeria have no voice and no choice and that you will always come back to them. They believe they have trapped you and we believe it is time to send them a message.

“The second reason they are not here is because they cannot answer the questions. It is very simple. They belong to the old recycled politicians that want to return to power with a sense of entitlement but not a record of performance.”

Ortom Apologises To Nigerians For Supporting Buhari In 2015

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has apologised to Nigerians and the people of the state for supporting the election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

Ortom stated this during his campaign tour of Wanune, in the Tarka Local Government Area of the state.

He called on residents of the area not to vote for his predecessor, Senator George Akume, in the forthcoming National Assembly elections but replace him with the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, who is from a neighbouring local government area.

Speaking during his interactions with leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria,  at the NKST Church in Wannune, Ortom said that he was following the footstep of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who had apologised to Nigerians.

The governor explained that he was doing same because the President Buhari-led administration had not only allegedly failed to live up to expectations but also condoned the atrocities of Fulani herdsmen across the country.

“All complaints for the arrest and prosecution of leaders of Fulani groups that sponsored the killing of our people in the state and destruction of property fell on deaf ears.”

According to him, while Buhari’s kinsmen, the late Presidents Shehu Shagari and Umaru Yar’adua, appointed several Tiv people as ministers in their cabinets,  the President had allegedly appointed none, in spite of the fact that the ethnic group which voted massively for him in 2015 was estimated to be the fourth largest in the country.

The governor further alleged that the Buhari administration had brought more hardship on Nigerians and people of the state in different ways, pointing out that Nigerians could not afford another four years of his leadership that would further plunge them into more crises.

He, therefore, urged the people to support his re-election as Governor and that of the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as President, in the forthcoming general elections.
