Appeal Court Bars CCT From Hearing CJN Onnoghen's Case

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has barred the Code of Conduct Tribunal from proceeding with hearing in the false assets declaration suit filed against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

The three-man panel granted the interim order pending ruling on the CJN’s application for stay of proceedings.

Lawmaker Sued Over Failure To Repay $10,000 Borrowed To Fund Campaign

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Maitama, yesterday, fixed February 28 to consider whether or not an order should be issued against Senator Nelson Effiong, following his alleged failure to repay a loan he took to facilitate his election campaign in 2015.

Justice Salisu Garba adjourned the matter to rule on a motion the lawmaker, who is representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, filed for extension of time to seek an out-of-court settlement deal with the plaintiff.

The suit marked CV/1874/18, was lodged before the court by one Mrs. Nsedu Bassey Onyile, who is based outside the country.


In the Writ of Summons before the court, the plaintiff claimed that the lawmaker, who she identified as a family friend of over 10 years, had sometime in February 2015, approached her for a soft loan of $10,000 to fund his campaign to contest for Senate.

 In a supporting affidavit deposed to by one Inyang Essien, the plaintiff, said she obliged the defendant and sent him the money through one Ante E. Okwong on March 18, 2015, through a bank of America wire transfer. She said the transaction was duly acknowledged by the Defendant.

 “That the Defendant acknowledged receipt of the money (the sum of $10,000) and promised to pay back by August 2015. “That the request to recover the $10,000 was made to the defendant since August 2015; another request was made to the defendant via letter to pay back the money on June 1, 2017. The said letter is hereby attached and marked EXHIBIT BB.

“That despite all these efforts to recover the money, the Defendant has blatantly refused to refund the money.” When the matter came up for hearing, yesterday, counsel to the embattled Senator, Mr. Peter Akpan, sought a short adjournment to enable his client explore an amicable settlement of the matter.

Mtukudzi died Wednesday  atAvenues Clinic in Harare. An international star with a fan base across the continent, Mtukudzi is mourned at home in Zimbabwe and around the region. After a career that spanned four decades and yielded hits like Todii, the guitarist and singer was Zimbabwe’s most succesful musical export.

Appeal Court Reinstates Donald Duke As SDP Presidential Candidate

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday affirmed a former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, as the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Mr Duke had emerged winner of the party’s primaries conducted in October, after he polled 812 votes to defeat a former minister, Jerry Ghana, who closely followed with 611 votes.

But a judge of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, Hussein Baba-Yusuf, on December 14 sacked Mr Duke as the SDP flag bearer and declared Mr Gana as the rightful candidate of the party in the forthcoming election.

Suits Will End After Season 9 As Ratings Fail To Recover From Meghan Markle & Patrick J. Adams Exit

Suits will not return after Season 9, it was announced on Wednesday night. The legal drama has been commissioned for one final series, featuring 10 episodes, after the remainder of Season 8 airs in 2019.

Ratings never seemed to recover from the departure of central characters Mike Ross and Rachel Zane, who were played by Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle.

Confirming an end to the series, creator Aaron Korsh told Variety: ‘I look forward to enraging and hopefully sometimes delighting you with the final episodes.’

Chris Brown was arrested on r-pe allegations in Paris - but has staunchly denied the claims.

And amid the singer's ongoing legal troubles, his baby mama Nia Guzman has reportedly also been experiencing difficulties since her Los Angeles home has been burgled.

According to TMZ, Nia - who raises daughter Royalty, four, with ex Chris - suffered a break-in on Tuesday night and had her designer bags and shoes stolen.

The website reports that valuable items belonging to both Royalty and Nia's oldest daughter were also taken during the burglary.


LAPD are allegedly investigating the incident, which is said to have occurred when Nia was visiting her mother next door.

The model, who boasts over 438,000 followers on Instagram, is alleged to believe someone might be watching her as she had left the lights and the television on in her home.

Gunmen Kidnap APC Candidate For Edo Assembly

Unknown gunmen have abducted the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Edo House of Assembly, Mr Michael Ohio-Ezomon, in his house at Eme-Ora, Owan West Local Government Area of the state.

The Chairman of the local government, Mr Frank Illaboya who confirmed this to newsmen in Eme-Ora on Thursday, said Ohio-Ezomon was abducted by three gunmen around 1:am on Thursday. According to Illaboya, the candidate’s police orderly was killed by the abductors who whisked him away through the window.

Man Divorces Wife For Insisting On Voting For Buhari

A man, Abdullahi Yada’u, has divorced his wife after failing to convince her not to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in next month’s presidential election.

Mr Yada’u, a resident of Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, told BBC Hausa Service on Thursday that he divorced his wife, Hafsat Suleiman, because she insisted on voting for Mr Buhari.

The president is seeking re-election on the platform of his party, APC.

Mr Yada’u stated that previously, both of them supported Mr Buhari in the 2015 elections. But this time, he felt disappointed with the administration and decided not to vote for him again, he said.


“I told her that she must not vote for him but she insisted which led to a quarrel which attracted the attention of our neighbours, I slapped her and told her to choose between voting for Buhari and staying with me. She ran away.

“Later her parents called me and I narrated to them what transpired between us. But still my wife insisted on voting for Mr Buhari, that’s how I divorced her in the presence of her parents.”
Ibrahim Suleiman, the wife’s elder brother, said they felt very sad over what transpired between the couple. We decided to deal with him but our father stopped us from joining issues with him, he told the BBC.

“He really disgraced us. They have been having issues even in the previous election. She is the one that convinced him to vote for Buhari, now he insisted on voting for Mr Atiku Abubakar. We decided that we will not allow her to go back to him again,” he said.

Mr Abubakar, the candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, is the main challenger to Mr Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Party in next month’s election.

The presidential election is scheduled for February 16.

Oby Ezekwesili's Party Has Now Backed Buhari

The Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) has withdrawn its support for its presidential candidate, Oby Ezekwesili.

The party declared its support for President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) is withdrawing support for her presidentia| aspiration and endorsing the second term bid of President Muhammadu Buhari to take Nigeria to the next level,” the party said in a statement today.

The ACPN was reacting to a decision this morning by Mrs Ezekwesili to withdraw from the presidential election.


ACPN in a press statement also said her action was taken without consulting the party.

The party also accused Mrs Ezekwesili of using it as a platform to negotiate to be Nigeria’s finance minister.

The statement was signed by Gani Galadima, its national chairman and running mate of Mrs Ezekwesili; Paul Isamade; National Secretary; and other officials.

The party also accused Mrs Ezekwesili of opening several accounts in the name of the party and her campaign without the knowledge of the party. It urged her to return all properties and donation received.

When asked if the party had an idea how much she got, the secretary of the party, Paul Isamade, revealed she admitted to the party about a month ago that she got $5000 and N35 million from local donations.

He also said she opened up to have spent N29 million so far.

Mrs Ezekwesili had said in her Thursday morning statement that she would provide details of her campaign expenses.

Imo APC Expels Governorship Candidate

The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ), on Thursday, expelled its governorship candidate, Senator Hope Uzodinma over alleged anti-party activities.

The state Chairman of the party, Hon Daniel Nwafor, who announced the expulsion during a media briefing at the party’s secretariat, said that the action became necessary to save the party from disintegration.

According to him, it has been established that the APC governorship candidate is sponsoring opposition candidates against the party’s candidates in the state, adding that such action is capable of ruining the chances of the APC in the elections.

Dismissed Soldier To Die By Hanging For Killing Girlfriend Over Text Message

A Plateau State High Court sitting in Barkin Ladi on Wednesday sentenced a 34-year-old dismissed solider, Sunday Umaru, to death by hanging, for hacking his lover to death over a text message, he found on her phone.

Justice S.P. Gang handed down the sentence after finding Umaru guilty of killing his girlfriend, Charity Thomas, on January 23, 2016.

Delivering the judgment, Gang declared that Umaru “mercilessly took the life of Charity Thomas in cold blood” and had to face the full wrath of the law.


“This sentence is mandatory; the law states that any person convicted of murder shall be punished with death by hanging.

“The sentence of this court upon you is that you, Sunday Umaru, will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul,’’ Gang declared.
