Roman Catholic Cathedral In Philippines BOMBED, 20 Killed, 81 Injured

Two bombs minutes apart tore through a Roman Catholic cathedral on a southern Philippine island where Muslim militants are active, killing at least 20 people and wounding 81 others during a Sunday Mass.

The first bomb went off in or near the Jolo cathedral in the provincial capital, followed by a second blast outside the compound as government forces were responding to the attack, security officials said. The blasts blew away the entrance to the cathedral and ripped through the main hall, shredding to pieces the pews and toppling other doors.

Police said at least 20 people died and 81 were wounded. The fatalities included 15 civilians and five troops. Among the wounded were 14 troops, two police and 65 civilians.

Photos showed debris and bodies lying on a busy street outside the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which has been hit by bombs in the past. Troops in armored carriers sealed off the main road leading to the church while vehicles transported the dead and wounded to the hospital. Some casualties were evacuated by air to nearby Zamboanga city.

"I have directed our troops to heighten their alert level, secure all places of worships and public places at once, and initiate pro-active security measures to thwart hostile plans," said Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana in a statement.

"We will pursue to the ends of the earth the ruthless perpetrators behind this dastardly crime until every killer is brought to justice and put behind bars. The law will give them no mercy," the office of President Rodrigo Duterte said in Manila.

Sack Of CJN: Nigeria Warns U.S., U.K Against Meddling In Country’s Internal Affairs

The Nigerian government has reacted to the position of both the United States of America and her United Kingdom counterpart on the suspension of the country’s Chief Justice, Walter Onnoghen.

A statement by Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant on media and publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, said as much as Nigeria welcomes interests and partnerships for a successful 2019 general elections, the government would not condone unfair interference in the country’s internal affairs.

Following the controversies generated by the suspension of Mr. Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday and the appointment of a successor in acting capacity, the United States, the United Kingdom and other foreign institutions issued statements advising the government to retrace its steps.
But the Federal Government on Saturday night strongly condemned the comments of the foreign countries on the suspension of the CJN, insisting that as a sovereign country, Nigeria deserves respect and honour.

The government statement came shortly after an Islamic socio-political group, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), attacked both the U.S. and the U.K. over their positions on the suspension of the CJN.

MURIC accused the two western countries of being too quick to make statements on the suspension without raising their voices against what it described as the weighty allegations against the CJN.
The statement by Mr. Shehu reads in part; “Nigeria reserves the right to be insulated from suggestions and or interference with respect to wholly internal affairs and commends international laws, customs and norms that mandate and require nations and the comity to respect this prerogative to all.

“Nigeria is confident of its electoral processes and her preparation for the imminent elections and the federal government has supported the independent electoral umpire in both its independence and resources needed to accomplish our desire and insistence on free and fair elections.

“In addition, the Federal government has ensured the independence of all organs, institutions and arms of government to perform their functions in a manner that is transparent and is not lacking in integrity whether institutionally or by persons within such institutions or organs and will continue to do this.

“Although the question of foreign interference, whether state-sponsored, promoted or otherwise has dominated recent elections and outcomes globally, the federal government assures citizens and the global community that it will fiercely and assiduously promote the will and the right of Nigerians to choose and elect their leaders without pressure or assistance from persons or entities that are not constitutionally empowered to participate in the process.”

Copyright Infringement: Tiwa Ignored Me When I Reached Out, Says Danny Young

Singer, Ajibola Olumuyiwa Danladi, aka Danny Young, is presently at war with Tiwa Savage over copyright infringement.

Recall that Tiwa had released a single titled, One, late last year. Shortly after, Danny Young alleged on his Instagram page that she took a line off his 2009 single, Oju ti Won. But Tiwa Savage refused to comment and went ahead to release the visuals of the song.

However, it seems that Danny Young has taken the case to YouTube. Presently, Tiwa Savage’s video has been taking off the video sharing platform.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, Danny Young said he had left everything in the hands of his lawyers. He said, “I wasn’t the one who contacted YouTube. My lawyers handled the process; I didn’t know how they went about it. You know YouTube knows the right thing to do.”

Young insisted that before it got to this stage, his camp reached out to Tiwa Savage but she ignored them. He said, “She felt we couldn’t do anything. I am sure she and her team know that we have a valid point. We didn’t even ask them for money, but we felt intellectual theft should be taken seriously in this part of the world. This is just the beginning; I plan to see this to the end if she doesn’t reach us for a compromise.”

According to Danny Young, people, who are supporting Tiwa Savage on social media, are ignorant. He added, “When I first raised the issue, I was slammed. They said I was saying rubbish. As a professional, I believe in more action, less talk. For people who understand music, plagiarism and copyright infringement, they will understand my point. I don’t have any business with people on social media as I feel they are ignorant.

“People said she only used the same proverb and that I was not the originator of the proverb. They are not looking at the technicality and professionalism of it all. Is it the same rhythm, coordination and tone? All these are music terms that people don’t understand. If you copy someone’s work, they look at all these.”

While admitting that he loves her music, Danny Young said he has never met Tiwa Savage. “I am a fan just like she might be my fan too. I love her music; she does well and I am in support of anyone doing good music. I also like the music of Yemi Alade and Simi,” he stated.

Nigeria Safe Under My Husband – Aisha Buhari

The First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has urged Kogi women and youths to vote for her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari, in the forthcoming presidential election, saying Nigeria will remain safe in his hands.

The First Lady stated this during a town hall meeting organised by the women and youths moblisation arm of President Buhari campaign organisation being coordinated by the Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Hajia Salamatu Umar-Eluma, in Lokoja, the state capital.

She spoke through the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osibanjo, who represented her at the event.

She said, “Nigeria is safe in the hands of my husband because he will not steal Nigeria’s money and he is a very prudent man.”

There Is Poor Pay In Nollywood, Sindodo Confirms

Sikiratu Sindodo in an interview with Sunday scoop also confirms there is poor pay in Nollywood. Sindodo says it’s sad and not encouraging. Hear her;

“I don’t have any regrets being in the industry. Just like in every other area of life, there are ups and downs. I just thank God that I’m still here because many people I started together with are no longer around. However, that is not to say that there are no challenges. The pay in the industry is poor and it is not encouraging at all. It is the passion one has that has kept one in the industry for this long. You only make money when you produce your own movies. Ordinarily, that shouldn’t be so. There is a lot of potential in the industry and we only need the right support to excel.”

Sharing her thoughts on depression, the actress said, “I believe that there is nobody that doesn’t get depressed but it all depends on how you manage it. There will always be ups and down. You may fall several times but never forget to get back up. The case of people in the entertainment industry is peculiar because we make people laugh by what we do but some of us are going through pains of different kinds. Some people now make it worse by trolling celebrities on social media and saying horrible things to them. Stars are humans too and we have emotions.”

Five Female Students Die In Ogun Crash, Driver Flees

No fewer than five female students lost their lives in a lone accident on Abiola Way in the Olorunsogo area of Abeokuta, Ogun State on Friday.

Sunday Punch gathered that four other persons went into a coma in the accident, in the night.

The Public Relations Officer of the Traffic Compliance Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, linked the accident, resulting in a tyre blowout, to reckless driving by the driver of an unregistered Toyota Avensis.

He said the number of passengers in the vehicle could not be ascertained as of the time the rescue team got to the scene.

Akinbiyi also said the driver had fled the scene of the accident before the rescue team got there.
According to him, the five female students died on the spot, adding that two persons sustained injuries during the accident.

He said, “Certainly, there must be a driver who drove the vehicle and escaped from the scene. The deceased are five young females who were identified as students of between the ages of 11 and 22.

“Four other persons were later brought to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, where they went into a coma after receiving the news of the death of the students.

“All the injured were taken to the FMC while the remains of the dead were deposited at the morgue.”

Senate To Reconvene On Tuesday Over Sacked CJN

The Senate will, on Tuesday, reconvene to discuss the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, and the swearing-in of Tanko Mohammed as the acting CJN by President Muhammadu Buhari.

A principal officer in the Senate, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told one of Punch correspondents on Saturday that the leadership of both chambers would have a crucial meeting today (Sunday) to deliberate on the agenda for the emergency session.

It was learnt that the sudden decision of the National Assembly leadership to reconvene might not be unconnected with the public outcry that greeted Buhari’s suspension of Onnoghen on Friday.

Speaker Dogara Warns: We're Now In Dictatorship, They're Setting Nigeria On Fire

Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, has raised the alarm that those who swore to defend and protect the country’s democracy have set it on fire.

In a statement on Saturday, Dogara said the suspension of Walter Onnoghen, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), by President Muhammadu Buhari is a notice to the world that “Nigeria is now a full-blown dictatorship.”

He said no constitutional provision in sections 157 and 292 supports Buhari’s action.

This did not come as a rude shock except to those who have been blind to the gradual but progressive erosion of democratic values in the polity as President Buhari’s government has never hidden its disdain for the rule of law,” the Speaker said.

“We have watched in disbelief as the Government recklessly deploys institutional prerogatives; routinely flouts the rule of law; subverts and assaults democratic Institutions; refuses to accept opponents as legitimate; suppresses citizens civil liberties (especially those of opponents) and trample underfoot the media. In short, the Government’s tyrannical and authoritarian credentials are loathsomely legendary.

“The whole idea of a limited government is that the President’s powers is limited by law and it is ultra vires his powers to act in the absence of explicit legislative authorisation. That is representative democracy at its best which our 1999 Constitution as amended guarantees.

“It is instructive to note that our constitution does not contemplate or presupposes a situation whereby the Judiciary will have a suspended CJN and an acting CJN at the same time. Therefore, it is right to posit, as some have done that the President now has his own Chief Judge to do his bidding while Nigeria has a sitting CJN until he is removed in line with the provisions of the Constitution.

“As of today, Nigeria is now Germany in the wake of the 1933 Reichstag fire. Our democracy is on fire; ignited by the very people who swore to protect and defend it.

“That this fire must not convert the chancellor to Fuhrer as it happened in Germany in 1933 depends on our collective response and that of the international community. We must not bow our knees to dictatorship: not now, not ever again.”

Dogara said the world must not allow “this unmitigated disaster” in Nigeria.

Families Of Gallant Soldiers Killed By BH: It's Sad They Shattered Our Darlins' Dreams

Gbenga Adeniji writes about the profound anguish of relatives of soldiers who paid the ultimate price fighting terrorism

If tears could wake the dead, Yinka, the slain brother of writer and lecturer, Taofeek Olatunbosun, would have risen from the dead by now.

Last week when he heard of the death of his soldier brother in Borno State in the hands of Boko Haram, Olatunbosun cried himself hoarse.

He was yet to believe that his brother, who was a major in the army, had been cheaply killed by the terrorists. Olatunbosun mulled and sighed as sympathisers pleaded with him to take heart. He just couldn’t control his emotions inflamed by inestimable grief.

Barely managing to speak with The Punch amid the palpable misery, he said, “There are pains that do not heal but have to be nursed all through life’s pathway. This is one of them. The death of my brother, Major Yinka Olatunbosun, has left our family in eternal sorrow. We both grew as brothers and later decided to make career choices.

“When I chose to be a writer, he said my choice was a good one for the family and said he would do his best in the army. We kept in touch with each other despite our busy schedules. Then one night, he called, wanting to know what my PhD was all about. I told him it was on ‘personality and creativity.’ When he heard about the PhD theory, he asked me if I had come across Prof. Cesare Lombroso, a crime analyst. I queried his academic acumen but he told me not to forget that he earned degrees before joining the army.”

Saying his brother had high hopes about his career, Olatunbosun regretted that his dreams were shattered suddenly like a glowing candle blown away by a quickening wind.

With tear-plastered face sullied by unending recollections, he added, “Then I told him I would like to write about the army, Boko Haram and terrorism. He promised to assist me. Then suddenly, we heard that Boko Haram killed him alongside a lieutenant and some soldiers last week.”

It was reliably gathered that the slain soldier’s father, who is a retired soldier, had been heartbroken since he heard the news of his son’s death.

Olatunbosun, who also disclosed that their father, who had lost his wife, became devastated upon hearing the crushing news, stated that Yinka left behind three children and a young wife who were equally inconsolable by his death.

It was further learnt that the widow of the late weapon expert in the army became anxious when she couldn’t reach him on his mobile for two days until news got to her that her doting husband had been killed a few days earlier in a battle with insurgents.

Grief so unbearable
Though the widow of the late Captain Emeka George, Funmilayo, is trying to forge ahead despite her husband’s death in the ongoing war against insurgency, it is hard to hide her grief over the incident.

Funmilayo, who said she met her late husband at the Lagos State University, Ojo, where they both studied, noted that her consolation was the love they shared.

She said, “I am from Lagos State while my husband was from Enugu State. We met at LASU where I studied Accounting. I am greatly pained by my husband’s death. We both attended last year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, but I was at this year’s event alone. The day I saw his corpse at Maiduguri, Borno State, when he was buried on August 13, was a really sad day for me. But 15 days later, precisely on August 28, I was delivered of a baby boy who resembles him so much. I have four girls and a boy. I recall how I missed his physical presence when my first child, who is 10, wanted to attend Air Force Secondary School and I was told that her father had to come with her and I said he was dead.”

She stated further that she had no work at the moment and concentrating on how to wade through life with her children. Funmilayo recalled that when her husband died, those close to her and some of his colleagues kept the news from her until she found out.

She added, “It was indeed a sad day for me when I got the news that my husband was dead. Even my friends, who already got the news, only called me to ask if I heard from him to know if I was aware. It was a terribly sad moment for me.

“There was a time his daughter told him to quit when we spoke via WhatsApp video call one day. He told her affectionately that he wouldn’t do that as he signed to protect the country against internal and external aggressors.

“I have told our children what happened to him and that they wouldn’t see him physically again. They cried and accepted the reality. I don’t know what to say as I am so sad about the death of my caring husband.”

It was learnt that the late George, who studied History and International Relations, enjoyed writing poems and used to put his creative mind to task anytime there was an opportunity to do so.

One of George’s ex-course mates at LASU, Mr Olaiya Borisade, who was also obviously pained by his death, said they were like twins during their undergraduate years. He said, “That was before he joined the army. We both studied History and International Studies. I find it difficult to describe the way I miss him. Since his reported death, I have not been able to come to terms with the occurrence. I still feel that a part of me is gone.”

The case of Seun, widow of Ibrahim Sakaba, was as absurd as it was traumatic. This is because the Ogun State indigene learnt of her husband’s death on the Internet. Sakaba was among the soldiers killed when the terrorists attacked the Nigerian Army 157 Task Force Battalion, Metele, in November, last year.

Efforts to make Seun speak with our correspondent about her husband’s demise were futile as she politely declined. But a reliable family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorised to speak to the press, said it was devastating for Seun when she learnt of the incident.

The family source said Seun chatted on WhatsApp with her husband last on a Sunday prior to her 30th birthday before the deadly attacks.

The source said, “She later sent him a message on WhatsApp a few days later as they usually communicated via the platform. She was even going to accuse him of not sending him a birthday message, not knowing that he was dead. She uploaded her photo on WhatsApp that day and a friend sent a message to her to ‘take heart’ as God would take care of her and her four-year-old son.

“The message got her worried and she called the friend who, sensing she was unaware of the development, said she meant that God would protect her and her son being the only ones celebrating her birthday without her husband in town. Seun still didn’t know that something was amiss but prayed to God to protect him. She called a soldier close to her husband who said their location was attacked but would get back to her. I wasn’t sure he picked his calls afterwards, perhaps he didn’t want to break the news of her husband’s death to her. It was later that one of her godmothers, who also hardly visited her, paid her a visit to say she only came to check on her.”

According to the family source, Seun, who usually browses the Internet, later saw her husband’s photo on several platforms that he was killed during an attack by Boko Haram.

Saying they were married for seven years, the source noted that the incident left her heartbroken but decided to be strong for her son.

The source stated, “She saw her husband last in 2016. They got married when he was a major. He died as a lieutenant colonel in Maiduguri during the Metele attacks. The late soldier lost his father when he was young and his mother died on Saturday (yesterday). He also lost his brother, Yakubu, an army lieutenant, to the Boko Haram war in Yobe State on October 5, 2014. The soldier brothers were from Kebbi State.”

It was gathered that Seun is now into farming for survival and would always tell those close to her, “I am in God’s hands.”

The widow, it was learnt, was in Maiduguri in December for the private burial of her husband alongside some other soldiers.

Disturbing development
One common thing among the bereaved relatives of the slain soldiers was that they were first unable to get in touch with their loved ones on the phone for days. Out of anxiety, they reached out to their colleagues who would refuse to disclose anything until they somehow got wind of the fate that had befallen their beloved.

The Punch reliably learnt that none of the grieving families was officially informed by the army authorities of the death of their soldier relatives. Indeed, the soldiers fighting terrorism in Nigeria continued to do their best in spite of the challenges associated with the hard-hitting task.

Videos had trended online of how soldiers in troubled parts of the country held birthdays and religious services among themselves, clutching tenaciously to their guns to repel any attacks from the terrorists. Lately, one of the soldiers even refused to betray emotions but rather let them out online when his girlfriend, perhaps unsure of her future with him, went ahead to marry another man.

As the war against terrorism intensifies, the Federal Government alleged last week that opposition political parties were busy mobilising bandits and Boko Haram fighters to cause crisis ahead of next month’s polls.

Though the army usually keeps mum on the casualty figure on its part after any battle with the insurgents, it not long ago said 23 of its personnel were lost to the Islamic State of West African Province terrorists that attacked the 157 Battalion in Metele, Borno State, on November 18, 2018.

Besides, the United Nations Development Programme, in its 2018 National Human Development Report – ‘Achieving Human Development in North-East’ – said Boko Haram attacks claimed 32,570 lives in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states in eight years.

How to lessen grief of slain soldiers’ relatives — Counter-terrorism experts
Commenting on ways to help the grieving families get a sense of closure, a senior researcher in the Transnational Threats and International Crime Programme at the Institute for Security Studies, Pretoria, South Africa, Dr. Akinola Olojo, said soldiers, who paid the ultimate price defending Nigeria against Boko Haram, deserved honour and gratitude from everyone.

He said, “However, we must go beyond this and ensure that their families are accorded a number of advantages that would help to lessen the pain of loss. First, the relevant government (and military) institutions should ensure that the affected families receive full benefits in the form of healthcare, education, assistance with job placements as well as other social and financial safety nets. The families should not be left to suffer due to bureaucratic delays that hinder processing of these benefits.”

Presidency Cries Out: US & UK Can't Interfere With Our Affairs... Senate To Take Action Over CJN

The Senate will on Tuesday reconvene to discuss the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, and the swearing-in of Tanko Mohammed as the acting CJN by President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday.

A principal officer in the Senate, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the leadership of both chambers would have a crucial meeting today (Sunday) to deliberate on the agenda for the emergency session.

The Punch, however, learnt that the sudden decision of the National Assembly leadership to reconvene might not be unconnected with the public outcry that greeted Buhari’s suspension of Onnoghen on Friday.

The source said, “The leadership of the two chambers has agreed to reconvene on Tuesday. They will, however, hold a crucial meeting in the private residence of the Senate President on Sunday evening (today).

“The meeting will set agenda for the emergency session they plan for Tuesday. I cannot confirm whether the impeachment of the President will form part of the agenda but I can assure you that a drastic decision will be taken against him.”

The lawmakers had, during Thursday’s plenary, adjourned sitting until February 19, which will be after the presidential and National Assembly elections.

Timing of Onnoghen’s removal raises concern –UK, US
Meanwhile, the British Government has expressed worry over the removal of Onnoghen.

This comes barely hours after the American government disagreed with the Federal Government over the removal of the CJN.

The United Kingdom said the timing of the removal, which occurred three weeks to the election, could cast a shadow over the polls while the US believed that the CJN’s removal could affect the credibility of the polls.

The statement read, “We respect Nigeria’s sovereign authority and its right to adjudicate on constitutional provisions but as friends of the Nigerian people, we are compelled to observe that the timing of this action, so close to national elections, gives cause for concern. It risks affecting both domestic and international perceptions on the credibility of the forthcoming elections. We, along with other members of the international community, are following developments closely.”

Also, the United States of America asked Buhari to resolve the issues raised by Nigerians against the suspension of Onnoghen quickly and peacefully in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.

The US Embassy said this in a statement on Saturday in a reaction to the suspension of Onnoghen by the President.

The statement read, “The Embassy of the United States is deeply concerned by the impact of the executive branch’s decision to suspend and replace the Chief Justice and head of the judicial branch without the support of the legislative branch on the eve of national and state elections.

“We note widespread Nigerian criticism that this decision is unconstitutional and that it undermines the independence of the judicial branch. That undercuts the stated determination of government, candidates, and political party leaders to ensure that the elections proceed in a way that is free, fair, transparent and peaceful – leading to a credible result.

“We urge that the issues raised by this decision be resolved swiftly and peacefully in accordance with due process, full respect for the rule of law, and the spirit of the Constitution of Nigeria. Such action is needed urgently now to ensure that this decision does not cast a pall over the electoral process.”

Stop meddling in our affairs -Presidency replies US, UK
The Federal Government said last night that Nigeria reserved the right to control its internal affairs and noted that it would not subscribe to other countries “meddling” in its affairs.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said, “The Federal Government welcomes the prevailing keen interest and partnerships for successful elections and peaceful Nigeria.

“However, we reject any interference or perception management that promotes apprehension, citizens’ distrust or undermines the transparency and acceptability of the outcomes of our electoral process.

“Nigeria reserves the right to be insulated from suggestions and or interference with respect to wholly internal affairs and commends international laws, customs and norms that mandate and require nations and the comity to respect this prerogative to all.”

13 States Where Buhari & Atiku Will Have Serious Battle

As Nigeria inches closer to February 16 general election, the shape of the two-horse race between the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival, Atiku Abubakar, is becoming clearer. The two parties look set to do well in their traditional strongholds.

However, intriguing contests are shaping up in a little over a dozen states and this could swing the outcome one way or another.

In this report, The Nation's Yusuf Alli, Managing Editor, Northern Operation, Sam Egburonu, Associate Editor and Dare Odufowokan, Assistant Editor, shed light on the dynamics of the race in what can now be referred to as the swing or battleground states for the forthcoming polls.

IMO STATE
In the Southeast geo-political zone, Imo State, which is currently administered by an All Progressives Congress-led government, promises to be the hottest state to watch in the coming elections.

This is because the implosion of the political family of the out-going governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, had created so much bad blood that the ruling party in the state, the APC, can no longer take it for granted that it would win the race in the state.

RIVERS STATE
Nyesom Wike’s emergence as the state governor, on the ticket of PDP against Rotimi Amaechi’s support, not only returned the state to PDP but marked the beginning of a gripping political rivalry that has held the breathe of Nigerians.

Because Amaechi, the current Minister of Transportation is also both the Director-General of Muhammadu Buhari’s Presidential Re-election Campaign and also the leader of ruling APC in the state and the whole of the South-south zone, the expectation is high that he ought to ensure APC’s victory in his state in all the elections. Both because of the high offices he currently occupies and the fact that it has become a personal battle between him and his former ally, the permutation has been that Amaechi will put in all he has both to deliver Rivers to Buhari and to reclaim his position as the political leader of Rivers.

Paradoxically, the same pressure is on Governor Nyesom Wike to deliver Rivers to PDP. Those who followed the political battle from the onset can recall that Wike enjoyed unalloyed support of the former First Family, the Jonathans, when he contested for the office of the governor of the state against the endorsement of Amaechi.

Since then, the two rivals have further tightened their belts, thus making the struggle for the soul of Rivers even more arduous.

The matter was further complicated the upper weekend when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) omitted APC candidates as it released the final list of Presidential and National Assembly Elections candidates.

Observers said the implication of non-inclusion of the APC candidates on the list is that the party would not partake in the elections in the state. If this is true, it would mean that APC and Amaechi had been defeated technically.

DELTA STATE
The general elections in Delta, which has remained a PDP state since 1999, will also be interesting. Given that the party has continued to grow under the leadership of Governor Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa of PDP, there is the tendency to speculate that PDP would still win this year’s elections there.

It would be recalled that out of the 1,267,773 valid votes cast in the state during the 2015 presidential election, PDP got 1,211,405 votes, while APC got 48,910 votes.

That year also, the party won the governorship election with a great margin.

The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Bio Nyananyo, had announced in Asaba that Okowa won the election as he polled 724,680 votes to beat his closest rival, Chief Great Ogboru of the Labour Party then, who got 130,028 votes, while Chief O’tega Emerhor of APC then made the third position with 67,825 votes.

Looking at these figures, one would ordinarily write off any party contesting with the ruling party, PDP, in Delta.

But today, so much has happened in the politics of the state, especially within the opposition APC. For example, the defection of the former governor of the state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, to APC last year is considered a major plus for APC.

But informed observers wonder if such gains are enough to defeat PDP leadership in the state and win votes for Buhari?

Also, Great Ogboru, who came second in 2015, with Labour Party, then a less popular party, is now flying the APC flag. This will be a big boost for APC both for the governorship and the presidential election.

If one adds Ogboru’s factor and Uduaghan’s influence, it seems certain that APC is poised to do better than it did in 2015 in Delta, when it came third.

AKWA IBOM
Beyond ongoing rhetorics between the two leading political parties in the state, the 2019 General Election in Akwa Ibom State will be nothing short of a political battle for the very soul of the state, pundits have predicted. For the very first time since the nation’s return to democracy in 1999, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has been in charge of the governance of the oil- rich state, is seriously being challenged by an opposition party in the race for the political leadership of the state.

Going by recent political events in the state, it is very convenient to say both the PDP and the APC are well rooted in the nooks and crannies of the state, no thanks to the political division between former Governor Godswill Akpabio and his erstwhile political godson, current Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel. Following the unexpected decision by the former, who was also the Minority Leader of the Senate at the time, to dump the PDP and pitch his tent with the All Progressives Congress (APC), the political permutations in the state have changed drastically.

Before Akpabio’s political disengagement with the PDP, the state was a PDP stronghold in every sense of the word. Apart from the fact that the party has been in charge of the state since 1999, no opposition party had recorded any meaningful performance against the PDP in any major election before now. Across the state, the people have over the years, largely associated with the PDP save for pockets of opposition figures here and there.

But with the defection of Akpabio and his political family into the APC, reliable sources across the state say the politics of the state is now symbolized by a sharp division of the people into PDP supporters and APC supporters.

"Something unprecedented is happening in Akwa Ibom. Everywhere you turn to, you now find supporters of both the PDP and the APC slugging it out, unlike in the past when the PDP was the family party of the people of the state,” a journalist working in the state said.

OGUN STATE
Developments suggest that the forthcoming general elections in Ogun State will feature unusual contests.

On the candidates’ list released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), oil magnate, Dapo Abiodun from Iperu in the Remo axis of Ogun East, is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) while Senator Buruji Kashamu, representing Ogun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, is the flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Also on the list of candidates released by INEC are, Egba-born former Speaker of House of Reps, Dimeji Bankole as flag bearer of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and a two-time governorship candidate, Gboyega Nasiru Isiaka, who now flies the ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Isiaka, who is from Yewa in Ogun West, was the candidate of the PDP in 2015. Adekunle Akinlade of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) is also in the race from Yewaland.

In addition to this, the internal crisis that is troubling the ruling APC, following Governor Amosun’s controversial decision to oppose the ambition of Dapo Abiodun, the party’s gubernatorial candidate and support his preferred successor, Adekunle Akinlade of the little known APM, has also heightened the political situation in the state while weakening the support bases of the APC across the state in the guber contest.

Also, the emergence of Hon. Ladi Adebutu as factional candidate of the opposition PDP amidst endless litigations and violent clashes between the two factions of the party in the state, has added to the uncertainties surrounding the governorship race in Ogun State. While INEC, as electoral umpire, says Kashamu remains on its list of candidates, the PDP national leadership recognizes Adebutu as its candidate.

INEC said it is obeying a valid court judgement by recognising the list submitted to it by Kashamu’s faction of the opposition party in the state. But Adebutu, who had earlier been named as the candidate by the national leadership of the party, while relying on an Ibadan Appeal Court judgement, is insisting that he is the rightful flag-bearer of the opposition party. In a bizarre twist of the crisis in the party, the two ‘candidates’ have been going about campaigning, with their supporters clashing regularly.

With the above scenario, the 2019 governorship in Ogun State is playing out as a war of zones, as all the four zones in the state are now having at least one major candidate in the race. This is contrary to the desire of Governor Amosun and other notable political leaders in the state, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to restrict the race to a contest between candidates from the Yewa axis of the state.

The Ogun West Senatorial District is yet to produce a governor since 1976 when the state was created, and Amosun was determined to break the jinx. He campaigned vigorously for the ticket of the APC to be zoned to the area and he almost achieved that before the party’s NWC overruled his consensus arrangement and ordered a direct primary election which Dapo Abiodun, from Remoland, a zone in Ogun East Senatorial District, won.

The PDP from day one never zoned the governorship ticket to Ogun West. Both factions of the party in the state seem to have their eyes on producing a candidate from Ogun East too, as no serious contender emerged from Ogun West and Central all through the process leading to the primary elections of the Adebutu and Kashamu factions of the PDP.

Like Abiodun, Kashamu is from Ogun East and currently represents the district at the National Assembly. But he is from Ijebuland, another zone in the area which has also been clamoring to be given a chance to produce the governor of the state, 36 years after the late Bisi Onabanjo, its only son to have been governor of the state, left office. His supporters say Abiodun from Remo cannot be governor just eight years after Gbenga Daniel, another Remo man, left office.

From Ogun Central, made up of the Egbas, former Speaker Dimeji Bankole is in the race. He is unperturbed by the fact that outgoing governor Amosun is from the same zone as himself. He says zoning should not rob the state of the best hands for the job. The congress that produced him took place in all the 20 Local Government Areas and 236 wards in the state, according to the Returning Officer for the primary election, Mr. Chamberlain Amadu.

Not to be left out, the Yewas of Ogun West, preferred by Amosun and other opinion leaders to have the seat, have Isiaka in the race, but on the platform of little known ADC, having failed to bag the ticket of any of the two leading political parties. Akinlade, the preferred candidate of Governor Amosun, had defected from the ruling APC to the APM, to keep the Yewa agenda alive.

KWARA STATE
The state is a major focus point because the threat to the status quo as symbolized by Saraki Dynasty is real. Although the scion of the dynasty, Senate President Bukola Saraki, may be travelling about with the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, there is fire on the mountain at home.

The spate of violence in the past two weeks underscored the prevalent do-or-die politics in the state. While the ruling PDP does not want to relinquish its grip on power, the wind of change blowing from the direction of the APC has been like a Tsunami.

Analysts see the electoral map here as fluid with the three senatorial districts left open to be won either by PDP or APC.

None of the two leading parties can boast of an outright win in any district. Saraki, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District, has a date with his closest rival, Dr. Ibrahim Oloriegbe, who was a former member of the State House of Assembly. The contest is reminiscent of the duel between David and Goliath. For Oloriegbe, who was once a product of the dynasty, his record of selfless service as a medic and as well as coming from a respected family, will make the contest tough. His greatest advantage is the mass discontent against the Sarakis.

Despite the power of incumbency, it won’t be an easy ride for Saraki in Kwara Central District. In the last one month, the Senate President has retreated to fault lines for political survival and to retool his campaign machinery, but the people of Ilorin Emirate who dominate the district, are now sharply divided for and against him.

KOGI STATE
How the APC will wriggle out of its political quagmire in Kogi State is a development political scientists are watching with keen interest. The party will have to contest with others in February for the Presidential, National and State Assembly polls and in November for the governorship seat.

The ghost of the late Governor Abubakar Audu is still haunting APC and Governor Yahaya Bello, who has tried to re-write history after benefitting from Audu’s mandate.

Out of the three senatorial districts, APC remains solid in Kogi Central which is largely populated by the governor’s Ebira kinsmen. There had been a few protests against Bello in the Central district but the governor has engaged in arm-twisting and outright political witch-hunting to retain his grip.

But the party needs extra salesmen to regain the confidence of Kogi East (Audu’s fortress) in the next strands of election. The management of the aftermath of Audu’s death – including the hounding of his son – looks set to hurt the ruling party.

BAUCHI STATE
Within two weeks, the political calculations in Bauchi State have changed with PDP losing most of its heavyweights to APC. Although Governor Mohammed Abubakar was initially opposed by the elites in the state, the intervention of President Buhari and members of the ruling mafia in the North have altered the dynamics significantly.

Many PDP bigwigs in the last 15 days have defected to APC, among them a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Yayale Ahmed; a former National Chairman of PDP, Adamu Mu’azu; ex-Governor Isa Yuguda; ex-Deputy National Chairman of PDP, Senator Babayo Garba Gamawa; a former Deputy Governor, Abdulmalik Mahmood; Kaulaha Aliyu; a former National Organizing Secretary of PDP, Dr. Musa Babayo; Senator Abubakar Maikafi and Ambassador Adamu Jumba.

The PDP has the Speaker of the House of Reps, Yakubu Dogara, as the arrowhead of its campaign in the state. Being a minority Christian, his comments and conspiracy in the National Assembly against the president have diminished the chances of the main opposition party because the Hausa-Fulani oligarchy cannot understand why the Speaker would join forces against Buhari.

Despite the fact that the PDP governorship candidate, ex-FCT Minister Bala Mohammed, has done so much to gain mileage for the party, the state may witness a relapse to old Hausa-Fulani/Muslim versus minority/Christian voting pattern.

The ex-minister has empowered many, offered scholarship, renovated mosques and won the hearts of many. But Dogara and his colleagues in the National Assembly from Bauchi State have proved to be more of liabilities than assets to PDP.

Yet Bauchi State is under watch in order to see the magic wand the new generation of leaders led by Dogara, will deploy to upstage these APC bigwigs. A source said: “PDP is banking on poor performance of the governor as a major campaign issue.”

BENUE STATE
All the parties have a huge task at hand to take their campaign to the nooks and crannies of 23 local government areas in the state. The politics has largely been personality-based, but has also been coloured by economics, ethnicity and religion in the light of the herdsmen killings witnessed in the last two to three years.

With over 70 per cent of the people dependent on agriculture, the farmers-herders crises had affected and displaced thousands of peasants in the rural areas from the dominant ethnic groups especially the Tiv, the Idoma and the Igede.

Governor Samuel Ortom has capitalized on the farmers-herders crises as a weapon to secure his second term ticket. The anti-Fulani sentiments in the state have grown to the extent that President Buhari and APC are despised.

Ortom went a step further in the week to apologize to the people of the state for leading them to APC in 2015. The joining of forces by Ortom and ex-Governor Gabriel Suswam, who has an axe to grind for being put on trial for alleged corruption by the APC administration, has made the PDP more formidable.

KADUNA STATE
The battle in Kaduna State is purely of an ethno- religious dimension and it is already taking this shape. In fact, the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, alluded to it in a television interview when he said the people of Kaduna South District, comprising eight local government areas will not vote for him because they see APC as an Islamic party.

Intriguingly, the party is offering a Muslim-Muslim governorship ticket in a state notorious for sectarian conflict.

A source in the state said: “The Muslim-Muslim ticket might look insensitive, it appears politically expedient now for APC to win huge votes in view of how a Bishop from Kaduna South teamed up to reconcile ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The reconciliation paved the way for the emergence of Atiku.”

KANO STATE
With available votes of 5.4 million, Kano State attracts special attention because any party which secures a huge chunk of its votes can coast home to victory at the presidential poll. In 2015, the APC presidential candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari won 1,903,999 votes in Kano compared with PDP’s 215, 799 votes garnered by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

The exit of ex-Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso from APC to PDP is expected to improve the fortunes of the opposition party. But Kwankwaso’s defection has left PDP more divided due to the imposition of his son-in-law, Abba Kabiru Yusuf, as the party’s governorship candidate.

In February, the onus will be on Kwankwaso to prove that he controls the politics of Kano by installing a new governor and prove to the world that he can still deliver more than 1,903,999 votes to PDP.

How the opposition presidential candidate will defeat Buhari in Kano is a big hurdle and litmus test.

ADAMAWA STATE
The people of the state are caught between two choices of producing a home-bred president or voting for their son-in-law Buhari to remain in office. This is a testy moment for Atiku more than Buhari because he has a lot at stake. If he defeats Buhari in Adamawa, he would boost his political profile as primus inter pares in the state. But if Atiku suffers any setback, he would join the league of the likes of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo who lost in his home state.

The performance of Governor Jibrilla Bindow (from a minority tribe) has added value to Buhari’s campaign. Also, the nomination of game changers like Senator Binta Mashi and Hajiya Aishatu Ahmed Binani and other mobilizers at the grassroots have made winning the state an uphill task for Atiku.

Our findings show that the governorship candidate of PDP, Umaru Fintiri, popularly called “The ATM” by civil servants due to prompt payment of salaries when he was Acting Governor of the state, has made the turf tougher. Fintiri is giving Bindow an electioneering headache because of ‘the ATM perception’.

TARABA STATE
Ordinarily, Governor Darius Ishaku and the PDP is not expected to sweat for victory in February because power rotation in the state favours Southern Zone where Ishaku hails from. Since 1999, Taraba North and Central districts had held powers and in compliance with the unwritten pact among stakeholders in the state, the governor ought to spend two terms in office to complete the slot of the Southern zone.

But the emergence of a former Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan and former Acting Governor of the state, Sani Danladi, as the candidates of United Democratic Party (UDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) respectively, are threatening the power sharing formula in the state. Both Alhassan and Danladi are from Taraba North which produced the state governor (jailed Jolly Nyame) from 1999 to 2007. Nyame’s successor, the late Danbaba Suntai, was from Taraba Central.

The development has ignited ethnic and religious politics in the heterogeneous state. The major tribes in Taraba are Jenjo, Jibana, Kuteb, Chamba, Yandang, Mumuye, Mambila, Wurkum, Fulani, Jukun, Ichen, Tiv, Kaka, Panso, Kambu, Wawa, Vute, Tikari, Hausa and Ndola.

Taraba is in focus because this year’s election outcome will be determined by the spate of insecurity occasioned by farmers-herders clashes, the inter-tribal conflicts like Tiv-Jukun crisis, the Hausa-Fulani factor, religious sentiments and performance of the current governor.

The PDP may also have a working alliance with UDP during the presidential poll because Alhassan is a die-hard loyalist of Atiku Abubakar.

5 Female Students Die In Fatal Accident... Driver On The Run

No fewer than five female students lost their lives in a lone accident on Abiola Way in the Olorunsogo area of Abeokuta, Ogun State on Friday.

Four other persons went into a coma in the accident, in the night.

This Illegality Must Not Stand - Falana reacts to Buhari's action against CJN Onnoghen

Popular human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has finally reacted to the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Falana took on the issues. Read his full statement;

"I have had cause to call on the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) to withdraw the charge of false declaration of assets filed against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The call was without prejudice to the merit of the serious allegations levelled against the Chief Justice. In line with decided judicial authorities I had wanted the National Judicial Council to investigate the allegations. Unfortunately, the 88th statutory meeting of the NJC scheduled to hold on January 15, 2019 which could have deliberated on the matter and take an informed position was postponed indefinitely on the directive of the embattled Chief Justice.

"As the battle shifted to the courts, both the Judiciary and the Executive were forum shopping for court orders from the Federal High Court, the National Industrial Court, the Code of Conduct Tribunal and the Court of Appeal. In the process, settled principles of law were sacrificed for the exigency of the moment."

"Thus, at the 15th annual Gani Fawehinmi lecture which held in Lagos on January 15 2019, I was compelled to warn against the dangerous trend. Regrettably, the warning fell on deaf ears. Curiously, in an act of brazen impunity, the Executive procured an ex parte order from the Code of Conduct Tribunal for the immediate suspension of the Chief Justice from office. In his purported compliance with the ex parte order, President Mohammadu Buhari has announced the suspension of Justice Onnoghen as the Chief Justice and appointed Justice Tanko Mohammad as the Acting Chief Justice.

"It is unfortunate that the Bar and the Bench have played into the hands of the sponsors of incipient fascism in the country. For reasons best known to them, the stakeholders in the legal profession stood by and allowed the Office of the Chief Justice to be completely desecrated. It is intringing that the 12 lawyers including three Senior Advocates of Nigeria in the federal cabinet did not deem it fit to disuade President Buhari from carrying out the illegal suspension of the Chief Justice on the basis of an ex parte order issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal. In particular, they ought to have reminded the President of the compulsory retirement of Justice Stanley Nnaji and Justice Wilson Egbo-Egbo for issuing illegal ex parte orders for the removal of Dr. Chris Ngige as Governor of Anambra State...

"However, notwithstanding the inauguration of Justice Tanko Mohammad as the Acting Chief Justice the legal profession should not hesitate to review the entire Onnoghen saga in the interest of the nation's judiciary. In Elelu-Habeeb v AGF (2012) 40 WRN 1, the Supreme Court held that by virtue of section 292 of the Constitution the heads of the judicial arms of the state and federal governments in the country cannot be removed without a prior investigation conducted by the NJC. Consequently, the apex court set aside the purported removal of the appellant as the Chief judge of Kwara State upon an address forwarded to the house of assembly by former Governor Bukola Saraki. Therefore, the National Judicial Council should convene and constitute a committee to investigate the allegations leveled against the Chief Justice and make appropriate recommendation to the relevant authorities.

"Meanwhile, the legal team of the Chief Justice should proceed to challenge his suspension from office either at the Code of Conduct Tribunal or the Court of Appeal."

Despite the gravity of the allegations levelled against the Chief Justice the illegality of the suspension should not be allowed to stand. The ex parte order is a suspect document as the motion ex parte on which it was predicated was allegedly filed on January 9, 2019 while the substantive charge against the Chief Justice was filed at the registry of the Code of Conduct Tribunal on January 11, 2019. Furthermore, the counsel who argued the motion is not indicated in the ex parte order. However, in view of President Buhari's belated fidelity in the rule of law the federal government should comply with all valid and subsisting orders of competent municipal and regional courts made against the federal government. President Buhari should not be permitted to choose and pick orders of courts to obey."

Funny Pics Of Oshiomhole 'Mocking' Okorocha In Aso Rock

When you put two men with big ego - who are at loggerheads right in the same party - to sit close to each other, the outcome is often predictable. Either they completely ignore each other, or one will use the opportunity to laugh at the other like; 'I don win you!'

Obviously, it won't be easy for Governor Okorocha to smile with APC national chairman Adams Oshiomhole for any reason, not after what he did to his beloved son-in-law.

Woman Contesting For Senate Cries Out: My Life Is In Danger

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for Delta Central Senatorial District, Evelyn Oboro, on Friday said her life was in danger.

Oboro, who represents Uvwie, Okpe and Sapele Federal Constituency at the House of Reps, also accused the state police command of complicity for allegedly refusing to protect her.

The lawmaker told The Punch that she had been receiving strange calls from unknown political thugs threatening to kill her if she did not pull out of the race.

She noted that her application for police protection was declined for no cogent reason.

Oboro, in the same vein, accused the police of arming her opponent, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, with truck loads of policemen, who he allegedly uses to intimidate her supporters and other political leaders in the senatorial district.

She said, “I applied to the Nigeria Police that I will need security coverage for my campaigns and I was denied.

“But surprisingly, for the past two weeks, the APC candidate (Omo-Agege) has been campaigning round the senatorial district with 13 trucks of policemen. Police armoured cars are following him.

“He is intimidating my supporters and members of Delta Central. He is boasting that he would arrest me, incapacitate me and he would lock my house down like they did to some members of the National Assembly.

“He is also boasting of arresting my supporters.”

Oboro appealed to the Acting Inspector General Police to direct the Delta State Police Commissioner to urgently deploy policemen to protect her, noting that threats to her life should not be taken with a pinch of salt.

While stressing that she would win the election, she also lamented the destruction of her campaign posters by thugs suspected to be loyal to her opponents.

“I am the candidate to beat in the election. I am the most popular candidate in the race. No Urhobo woman has ever been elected to the National Assembly except me.

“I am currently in the House of Representatives. Public opinion shows that I am the most popular candidate.

“I am raising this alarm to alert the Acting IGP that between December last year and now, they have transferred all the Divisional Police Officers from Delta Central.

“Policemen from ranks and files are being transferred from Delta Central in fulfillment of the plot to use federal might to rig the election in favour of my opponent,” she added.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, Andrew Aniamaka, said he was unaware of the application by the PDP senatorial candidate for police protection.

'Why Buhari Hurriedly Removed CJN Onnoghen'

More facts emerged in Abuja on Saturday on why Buhari could not wait for the court to determine the fate of the embattled CJN, Walter Onnoghen.

The Chief Justice, it was gathered, was expected to
inaugurate judges that will adjudicate over the conduct of the 2019 elections in the country. He had fixed Saturday (yesterday) for the inauguration of the election petition panels.

A source told The Punch that, “There are a total of 250 members who would sit on the election panels. The panels comprise National Assembly Election Petition Tribunals, Governorship Election Petition Tribunals, and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunals.

“His sudden removal was aimed at either stopping the event or removing some judges on the lists...”

Journalists barred from CJN’s house
Journalists have been barred from accessing the house of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

The Punch correspondent who tried to gain access to the house located close to the Supreme Court was denied entry by stern-looking security men comprised of policemen and men of Department of State Services.

He was turned back by the men wearing presidential villa accreditation tag who told him his visit could not be permitted.

One of the men of the DSS, who questioned the correspondent, asked, “What is your mission here.”

Punch correspondent: I’m here to observe the situation around the house of the CJN to avoid misleading report.

DSS: Are you invited?

Punch Correspondent: I don’t need a formal invitation in this circumstance, I only come to have first-hand information.

DSS: That means you are here on sight and see. Sight and see is not allowed. Make a detour and go back.

The operative then beckoned on armed policemen to guide the correspondent out.
