Onnoghen Should Quit The Bench After His Suspension Has Been Lifted — Falana

Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has asked Justice Walter Onnoghen to quit the bench after his suspension must have been lifted by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The human rights activist made this call on Sunday while featuring as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He said, “The government should as a matter of urgency, lift the suspension on the Chief Justice since the Chief Justice as so much to on his own admitted that he did not declare his assets, he should do the needful by calling it quits”.

Falana said after the suspension has been lifted, the Chief Justice should quit the bench because he has already admitted that he failed in his duty to declare his asset as required by the constitution.

The Senior Advocate further argued that the Executive and the Judiciary arms of government have failed Nigerians with regards to the case of Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Bianca Ojukwu Writes On Her Visit To Villa Obama

Bianca Ojukwu, a former beauty queen and Nigeria’s former ambassador to Spain has taken to Facebook t wrote on her visit to Villa Obama, Marbella. Enjoy!

The Villa Obama is located within the Villa Padierna, and is named after the Iconic First Lady Of America, Michelle Obama who chose to stay in this particular villa during her visit to Marbella in the Costa del Sol, an event which threw this exotic resort into a frenzy.

The Padierna Palace is simply exquisite, and you feel like you literally stepped into a grand Italian Palace because it’s so luxuriously decorated in classical style with mostly original works of art. Naturally, I headed to the Villa Obama, a med style white villa with its own private pool and garden with a spectacular view of the amphitheatre, the lush golf course and of course, the Mediterranean sea to experience the brand Michelle.

I was truly mesmerized by the sheer luxury and opulence of thIs place and elated that the management chose to name it as a fitting tribute to one of the most outstanding and exemplary First ladies of the world, pride of the black race and a woman who is perhaps the most admired woman in America today.

Vote Buhari Only If Your Life Got Better In The Past 4 Years - Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has asked young Nigerians to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari only if they got new jobs, new opportunities and a better life in the last four years under Buhari.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications, Phrank Shuaibu, the former Vice-President urged Nigerians to vote for the PDP if their lives had gone worse in the last four years of APC government.

He said having worsened the level of poverty in the country, Buhari does not deserve to ask Nigerians for another chance.

The statement read in part, “The truth is that, there is no country in the world where a president with this appalling record could ever be re-elected.

“Over 100 million Nigerians cannot afford even one decent meal a day, yet their President is seeking re-election.

“The world powers as well as Nigerians also have intelligence that Buhari will decisively lose the elections since the people are angry because they are hungry and have no jobs.

“There is no level of rigging that this vile government could ever do to overturn the millions of Nigerians who will turn up at the polls to vote him out.

“We ask our dearest young population who got a job under Buhari in the last four years to vote for Buhari.

“But all those who lost their jobs and whose relations lost their jobs and businesses to his maladministration should please come out in large numbers to elect Atiku Abubabar, who is a harbinger of job creation.”

Presidency Moves To Bribe Senators To Block Sanction On Buhari, says Party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alerted of moves by some unnamed agents of the Presidency to bribe senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) extraction to protect President Muhammadu Buhari from imminent parliamentary sanctions for alleged constitutional breaches and gross misconduct.

The main opposition party said in a statement Sunday that intelligence available to it indicated that it was for this reason the Presidency summoned all APC senators for a meeting at the Presidential Villa.

The meeting at the Villa is slated for Monday night, ahead of the Senate’s planned resumption on Tuesday.
Spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, who signed the statement, said the Presidency was unsettled by the national and international outcry that greeted President Buhari’s suspension and replacement of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The statement said, “President Buhari is not only apprehensive that the Senate might sanction him for violating the constitution and usurping its statutory duties regarding the handling of issues related to a CJN, the parliament might also open an inquest into how President Buhari, who parades as Mr. Integrity, allegedly procured an Order from the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) upon which he announced the illegal suspension of the CJN.

“There are reports that the said order is suspicious and subject to investigation, being not argued or issued in the open court; following which a distressed Buhari Presidency now seeks to corrupt and undermine the Senate.

“The PDP has been made aware of how money has been moved from the coffers of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to bribe the APC senators, as well as how each APC senator has been offered huge sums of money in foreign currency to engage in heckling during the session, particularly when the matter is raised.

“However, the PDP wants the APC senators to note that the issue at hand is not partisan; it is not even about Justice Walter Onnoghen, but about nationhood, as well as the protection of our democracy and constitution from despotism.

“The Buhari Presidency is bent on corrupting our democratic institutions but Nigerians are watching the action of our lawmakers at this critical time”.

Suspected Nigerian ‘Pirate’ Boss Faces Extradition To The Netherlands

A man suspected of being the head of a Nigerian pirate syndicate will likely be heading to the Netherlands for prosecution, after the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday ruled in favour of his extradition.

Itoruboemi Benson Lobia was captured by SA’s Interpol branch at OR Tambo International Airport last November, while seemingly fleeing to Mauritius following his most recent attack.

The crew of the Dutch cargo ship FWN Rapide was kidnapped in April 2018 while travelling between Ghana and Nigeria, held hostage for three weeks before being released following an intensive negotiation process.

The Dutch government has insisted Lobia was the leader of the pirate group, and suspects he may have also been responsible for other similar attacks and running a syndicate with international connections.

Throughout his extradition proceedings, Lobia has claimed the authorities have the wrong man, this week insisting he is actually in the employ of the Nigerian army. Lobia said he was hired as a ships security officer, in charge of protecting the Nigerian waterways, and that the army had hired him as a consultant.

He also claimed he was not fleeing to Mauritius, instead meeting a security contact there who had offered him a job. Lobia believed the contact’s insistence that they meet in person in Mauritius was part of an elaborate plot by authorities to set him up as the leader of the pirates who kidnapped the FWN Rapide crew.

However, on Friday morning, magistrate William Schutte said it was not up to his court to determine if Lobia was guilty of his maritime crimes, simply to determine if the Dutch government did indeed have enough evidence to prosecute him. “Extradition proceedings are not a criminal trial, and aren’t concerned with determining guilt or innocence,” he said in his ruling.

He noted that the Dutch government had sent a series of authenticated documents, including a forensic report that consisted of witness statements from the Rapide’s crew, and the investigators looking into the case. He also noted that Lobia’s defence team had never disputed the documents’ authenticity, and that his only defence had been that he was not the man authorities were looking for.

He referred to the Rapide witness statements that had described the pirate leader, and noticed how these descriptions accurately portrayed the man in court, including his height, his one pierced ear, his complexion and estimated age. “The remarkable similarities between his appearance and the witnesses’ descriptions is an inconvenient truth (for Lobia),” he said.

Because of these factors, he ruled that Lobia should be extradited.

However, the magistrate did inform Lobia that he had 15 days to lodge an appeal against the ruling. In the absence of such an appeal, it will be up to justice minister Michael Masutha to sign off on the extradition and send Lobia directly to the Netherlands.

APC Removes Okorocha As Imo Campaign Coordinator

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress has removed the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, as the state coordinator of the party’s campaign council.

The decision followed the recommendation of the disciplinary committee set up by the Imo APC over allegations of anti-party activities levelled against the governor and others.

The committee chaired by Mathew Omegara had earlier summoned the governor and six others to appear before it.

The National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, had said the National Working Committee of the party would meet to consider the Imo APC recommendation that Okorocha should be suspended.

“What has happened in Imo shows that the APC means business. Once they have complied with all the rules, no problem. When they bring the recommendation to the NWC, we will look at it,” he had said.

But a member of the Imo State chapter of the APC told Punch correspondent on Sunday that Okorocha had already been removed by the NWC as the campaign coordinator of the party.

Okorocha had vowed to work for his son-in-law, who is the governorship candidate of the Action Alliance, Uche Nwosu, against the APC candidate, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

Black Panther Celebrates Triumphant Win After Scoring Top Honor At SAG Awards

With a leading four nominations, A Star Is Born was hotly tipped to win big at the 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at The Shrine Auditorium in LA.

But Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's hit movie was snubbed once again as Black Panther took home the top honor on Sunday, while the A Star Is Born cast went home empty handed.

Black Panther's leading man Chadwick Boseman took the lead, as the Marvel movie's cast got on stage to accept their trophies for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Chadwick honored the groundbreaking superhero film with a stirring speech about being given the chance to 'create a world that exemplified a world that we wanted to see' even when the industry odds were stacked against them.

Horrific! Woman Blinds Sister During Fight In Delta

A woman got a plaited hair extension stuck in her eye socket after her sister stabbed her in the face with a shard of glass and blinded her.

The gruesome injury ended up with a doctor having to tug out the weapon and the strand of hair with a pair of forceps.

The unnamed 37-year-old, from the Delta State, was in an 'anxious state', doctors said, because of the gaping wound in her cheek.

She was given local anaesthetic and surgeons pulled out the shard which had left her unable to see, then stitched up the cuts on her eyelids.

A doctor from the Delta State University, reported the woman's predicament in the journal BMJ Case Reports.

Her right eye was producing excessive amounts of fluid and intensely red, the report said, but her eyeball was mostly intact.

However, she suffered 'irreversible' damage to her cornea – the front of her eye – leaving it blinded and useless.

The section of hair – believed to have been sliced off the woman's weave during the attack – were sticking out of a diagonal slash beneath her eye.

The doctor did not include any details of the woman's argument with her sister or any other injuries sustained in the vicious fight.

Dr Mabel Okiemute Etetafia's report suggests the woman's hair was hanging in front of her face and the plait became caught on the end of the glass during the stabbing.

It was then driven into the flesh beneath her eye and pinned there by a piece of glass which broke off what is presumed to be a bottle or drinking glass.

'The cause of the retention of the woven artificial hair on the face was not initially clear,' Dr Etetafia wrote.

Gunmen Kill Another Policeman In Edo

Unknown gunmen have killed a policeman identified as Oisa Monday Ehigie. Late Monday was the police orderly to the Chairman of Ikpoba-Okha local government area, Dr. Eric Osayande.

He was shot dead on Saturday night at Nomayo Junction along Upper Sokponba road in Ikpoba-Okha local government.

His killings might be connected to the on-going cult war in Bénin City in which several persons have been killed in different parts of the State.

State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosun, who confirmed the killing said he has visited family of the slain policeman.

He said efforts were on to arrest the killers. Last week, the All Progressives Congress candidate for Owan West constituency, Micheal Ohio Ezomo was abducted while his police orderly was killed.

The abductors are yet to demand for ransom.

Notorious Robber Operating Will Two Guns Busted In Lagos

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested one Olalekan Ogundoju for conniving with a fleeing suspect to snatch a Toyota Corolla car from its owner, Ogadinma Ikeagu.

Ikeagu, who used the car with number plate KJA 69 FE, for a ride-hailing service under Uber, was said to have picked the suspects, who posed as passengers, around 11.50pm in the Afrikan Shrine area of Alausa, Ikeja.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said in a statement on Sunday that operatives of the command, who were on crime prevention patrol, came across Ikeagu crying for help because of his stolen car, adding that a chase in the direction of the fleeing suspects led to the arrest of Ogundoju around the Victoria Island area of the state.

Oti said, “On Wednesday, January 23, 2019, around 11.50pm, the anti-crime patrol team of the Maroko Police Station, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Isah Abdulmajid, while on crime prevention patrol, came across one Ogadinma Ikeagu, who was crying for help. He narrated that his Toyota Corolla saloon car, with number plate KJA 69 FE, had just been snatched by two passengers he picked up at the Afrikan Shrine.

“The DPO took the driver in his patrol vehicle and they drove in the same direction taken by the thieves while escaping with the car. Fortunately for the distressed Uber driver, the police team was able to intercept the car in Victoria Island.

“Although one of the suspected thieves escaped, the team arrested the partner in crime, one Ogundoju Olalekan of No. 14 Shomorin Street, Ifako, Gbagada. He was immediately searched and two wooden prototypes of Berratta pistols were recovered from him.

“On interrogation, he confessed to have committed the crime.”

The PPRO added that the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, had directed that the fleeing member of the syndicate must be arrested and made to face the law.

Buhari To Meet APC Senators To Stop Impeachment Move Over Suspension Of CJN

President Muhammadu Buhari has summoned members of the All Progressives Congress in the Senate to a meeting at the Presidential Villa on Monday (today) over the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

There are fears that some PDP senators will move to impeach Buhari.

Onnoghen was suspended on Friday by President Buhari based on an ex parte order granted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

He is facing six counts of false assets declaration filed against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau.

Buhari’s meeting with the APC governors will take place ahead of the Senate emergency resumption on Tuesday (tomorrow) when decisions are expected to be taken on Onnoghen’s suspension by the President.

The APC senators’ meeting with the President, it was gathered, would take a position to counter the expected condemnation of the CJN’s suspension by the members of the opposition in the Senate on Tuesday.

However, the meeting which is going to hold at the Banquet Hall, is being tagged as a dinner. Invitations to the meeting were signed by the Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, who is also the Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi.

A source close to the organisers of the meeting who spoke with The Punch, said the national leadership of the APC would also attend the meeting.

He said apart from the senators and the APC leaders, some APC governors had also been invited to the meeting.

He said, “You know that the Senate leadership belongs to the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party. The party on its own has taken a position on this matter.

“Also, the President of the Senate, who is also the Director General of the PDP presidential candidate Council, Bukola Saraki, has taken a position on this matter.

“So, we need to talk to our members in the Senate and impress it on them not to allow Saraki to impose his personal opinion on them.”

Finally, INEC Removes Amina Zakari From Collation Of Results

As part of its commitment to transparency during next month’s poll, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has excluded all its National Commissioners, including the controversial Amina Zakari, from the collation of presidential poll results and other strands of elections.

The commission has also decided to throw open
its Situation Room to accredited observers, civil society organisations and the media.

About one million (1m) Nigerians have applied for poll jobs as ad hoc staff. But INEC is still grappling with 639 court cases, arising from party primaries, barely 20 days to the general elections.

It, however, said it is impossible for anyone, no matter how smart, to compromise Card Readers.

According to a source, who spoke in strict confidence, neither the widely-criticised National Commissioner Amina Zakari nor any of the National Commissioners will be involved in the collation of presidential poll results.

The source also said the Resident Electoral Commissioners have no business with collation of results.

The source said: “No National Commissioner is in charge of collation of presidential poll results. It is true that there is what is called Collation Centre but it is separate from the Collation Secretariat, which is responsible for the collation of results.

"No National Commissioner will be appointed into the Secretariat Committee. So, Hajiya Amina Zakari or any National Commissioner does not have anything to do with the collation of results.”

Regarding preparation for the general elections, the source said: “Our plans are on course, we are happy with the speed..."

APC Headquarters Sacks Okorocha As Head Of Campaign

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has removed the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, as the state coordinator of the party’s campaign council.

The decision followed strong recommendation of the
disciplinary committee set up by the Imo APC over allegations of anti-party activities levelled against the governor and others.

But a member of the Imo State chapter of the APC told The Punch that Okorocha had already been removed by the NWC as the campaign coordinator of the party.

Okorocha had vowed to work for his son-in-law, who is the governorship candidate of the Action Alliance, Uche Nwosu, against the APC candidate, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

The member said, “The party has already removed Okorocha as the coordinator and directed Uzodinma to take over the campaign council. During the visit of the wife of the President to the state for campaign, the governor invited his son-in-law to the stage and raised his hands up. This jolted many of us who saw it as an affront to the President’s wife and the party.”

When contacted for verification on Sunday, Issa-Onilu said the removal of Okorocha was instant since his suspension came from his ward.

He said the implication of Okorocha’s suspension was that he could no longer function as the state coordinator.

Issa-Onilu said, “The APC had directed governors to take over the campaign of the party in the state. Where it has no governor, it directed governorship candidate to take over. Since Okorocha has displayed anti-party traits, you can’t expect him to be part of our strategic meetings again.”
