Death Toll In Brazil Disaster Hits 58 With 305 Missing

The death toll from Brazil’s collapsed mining dam climbed to 58, with 305 people still missing in southeast Brazil’s state of Minas Gerais, said authorities.

The dam owned by the Brazilian mining giant Vale collapsed Friday afternoon in Brumadinho in the state of Minas Gerais.

The collapse also caused a mud wave to flow down the river, destroying administrative areas of Vale and nearby residences as well.

Brazilian officials on Sunday suspended the search for potential survivors and evacuated thousands of local residents amid fears that another nearby dam owned by the same company could also collapse. But the search efforts have now resumed following the alarm.

IGP Adamu Names Lakanu, Lamorde, 4 Other DIGs

Acting IGP, Muhammed Adamu has appointed six new deputy inspectors-general of police.

The new DIGs who were elevated from assistant inspectors-general are Usman Tilli Abubakar, Abdulmaji Ali, Taiwo Frederick Lakanu and Godwin Nwobodo.

The remaining two new DIGs who were elevated from the rank of police commissioners are: Ogbizi Michael, former Abia State police commissioner, and Michael Lamorde, a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission who hails from Adamawa State.

The new DiGs were named this morning according to reports, and their respective portfolios would be announced later by the Police Service Commission.

Mother & Her Three Kids Declared Missing In Lagos (Photos)

A Nigerian woman, Shalom Sam-Ogbaji and her three kids have been declared missing in Lagos. According to Lawrence Olanrewaju, who shared the story online, Shalom and the kids were last seen on Friday January 25th at Ajao estate.

Since then, no word has been heard from them.

We Will Jail More Corrupt People, Osinbajo Says As He Brings Campaign To Lagos Again,

The Buhari-led administration will jail more corrupt Nigerians, if re-elected, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said.

Mr Osinbajo said this on Sunday during his house-to-house campaign in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Mr Osinbajo, the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was in the area to canvass for votes, also visited various markets and houses in the area.

Speaking to people in Ifako-Ijaiye, Mr Osinbajo said grand corruption, which plagued the 16 years administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) contributed to the lack of infrastructure for Nigerians.


Mr Osinbajo said the Buhari-led APC government would focus on jobs for youths, power and providing enough resources to financially empower petty traders and business owners.

“The difference between us and the PDP is that we don’t steal government resources. We use it for the people. We earn less and we spend more on the welfare of people than the previous government.

“Everybody knows Buhari is an honest man. He will not steal public fund. We shall continue to fight corruption so that we can have enough money to provide infrastructure. We have to build on the foundation we have laid.

“The corrupt people will be jailed. That is why the corrupt elements in the opposition are desperate to regain power. We can’t leave government for the thieves.

“You should vote for APC because it is the only party that can do the job. We should not allow PDP to return to power,” he said.

British Woman Jailed For Possessing Illegal Painkillers In Egypt Is Pardoned & Freed

The British woman jailed for possessing illegal painkillers in Egypt has been pardoned and freed.

Laura Plummer, 34, was jailed for three years in December 2017 after she was found carrying 290 Tramadol tablets in her suitcase.

But she has now been released after serving 14 months of her sentence, according to The Sun.

Miss Plummer's family said she was taking the tablets for her Egyptian partner Omar Caboo, who suffers from severe back pain and had no idea what she was doing was wrong.


Celebrating her release, she said: 'I'm so happy to be going home. I mean, who goes on holiday for two weeks and then stays 14 months.

'I just wish I wasn't being deported. But I promise you — I'll never set foot in an airport again.'

Miss Plummer was initially charged with smuggling drugs, which carries the death penalty.

But the charge was dropped and she was jailed on Boxing Day in 2017 for possessing the painkillers.

INEC Excludes Zakari, Other Recs From Collation

As part of its commitment to transparency during next month’s poll, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has excluded all its National Commissioners from the collation of presidential poll results and other strands of elections.

The commission has also decided to throw open its Situation Room to accredited observers, civil society organisations and the media.

About one million (1m) Nigerians have applied for poll jobs as ad hoc staff.

But INEC is still grappling with 639 court cases, arising from party primaries, barely 20 days to the general elections.


It, however, said it is impossible for anyone, no matter how smart, to compromise Card Readers.

According to a source, who spoke in strict confidence, neither the widely-criticised National Commissioner Amina Zakary nor any of the National Commissioners will be involved in the collation of presidential poll results.

The source also said the Resident Electoral Commissioners have no business with collation of results.

The source said: “No National Commissioner is in charge of collation of presidential poll results. It is true that there is what is called Collation Centre but it is separate from the Collation Secretariat, which is responsible for the collation of results.

”No National Commissioner will be appointed into the Secretariat Committee. So, Hajiya Amina Zakari or any National Commissioner does not have anything to do with the collation of results.”

Responding to a question, the source added that INEC met on Saturday and resolved to throw open its Situation Room.

The source added: “Related to the Collation Centre is our Situation Room. The international observers and other stakeholders want us to open up the Situation Room.

”The commission met on Saturday and decided that we will grant visitation rights to accredited observers, civil society organisations and the media.

”Observers might not be allowed to see all things but they can come in and out of the Situation Room. The greatest thing INEC has done with this is openness.”



Regarding preparation for the general elections, the source said: “Our plans are on course, we are happy with the speed.

”We are almost through with the engagement of ad hoc staff. In most cases, we recruit from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) but the irony is that we do not have enough corps members.

“We will recruit students in final year or penultimate year in the universities where there is shortfall. We have established portals for the recruitment of ad hoc staff and as at Saturday, one million (1m) Nigerians have applied.”

The source allayed fears that Card Readers can either be cloned or pre-loaded.

The source added: “It is impossible to compromise Card Readers or pre-load the cards. We have enhanced the cards, we have increased the memory of every card and we have increased the capacity of the battery of each card.

”Nobody on the field can tamper with any card reader because you have to break the seal.

On cases arising from party primaries, the source said INEC has been joined in about 639 cases.

The source added: “Between August 2018 and last week, we have been dragged to court 639 times on matters relating to the conduct of party primaries.

”We have received about 584 requests for Certified True Copy (CTC) of documents. We also have 186 protests and petitions from aggrieved persons.

“The management of litigations is going to be a big issue in February election.”

Onnoghen Should Quit The Bench After His Suspension Has Been Lifted — Falana

Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has asked Justice Walter Onnoghen to quit the bench after his suspension must have been lifted by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The human rights activist made this call on Sunday while featuring as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He said, “The government should as a matter of urgency, lift the suspension on the Chief Justice since the Chief Justice as so much to on his own admitted that he did not declare his assets, he should do the needful by calling it quits”.


Falana said after the suspension has been lifted, the Chief Justice should quit the bench because he has already admitted that he failed in his duty to declare his asset as required by the constitution.

The Senior Advocate further argued that the Executive and the Judiciary arms of government have failed Nigerians with regards to the case of Justice Walter Onnoghen.
