Just Imagine! Father Denies Charge As Daughter He Impregnated Die In Accident

A native doctor, Jacob Alonge, who was accused of impregnating his own daughter, Gift, has retracted his guilty plea.

The 54-year-old man, who was to be sentenced after pleading guilty to charges of incest, reportedly changed his plea after the news that his 17-year-old daughter had died in an accident on the way to a magistrates’ court in Benin City, Edo State.

Among those who also died in the ill-fated vehicle were Gift’s uncle, Mr Ukere Adagbogu; a worker with a non-governmental organisation, BraveHeart Initiative for Youth and Women, Ms Promise Ezekiel; and the driver, Paul Opashi.

Another worker with the NGO, Ms Rhoda Braimoh, who was in a critical condition, was reported to have also given up the ghost, bringing the casualty figure to five.

The Punch had reported that Gift and her father lived in Ososo, Akoko-Edo area of Edo State.

Jacob, who was said to possess diabolical powers, was alleged to have aborted the first pregnancy that resulted from the incest in 2017, using herbal concoctions.

The second pregnancy was said to have caught the attention of the local vigilante group, which handed him over to the traditional ruler of the Ososo community.

At the Ososo Police Station, Jacob allegedly made a confessional statement, as the case was transferred to the family unit of the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Benin City.

A scan was said to have revealed that Gift was 21 weeks pregnant.

The police subsequently arraigned the suspect before a family court at the Evbuoraria Magistrates’ Court, Benin, where he pleaded guilty to the charges in December 2018.

On January 16, 2019, the day the suspect was to be sentenced, the pregnant Gift, her uncle, workers of the NGO who were helping her, the driver and the leader of the community vigilante group were involved in a fatal accident at Ewu, Edo State.

The judgment was reportedly suspended when the news of the tragedy got to the attention of the court.

Shaken by the incident, the NGO also shut down operations.

It was learnt that when the matter came up on January 16, 2019, Jacob changed his plea from guilty to not guilty.

The founder of BraveHeart, Ms Priscilla Usiobaifo, in a statement on Sunday, said only justice would assuage the hurt of the organisation.

Usiobaifo added, “They (victims) died on the field, while serving humanity. They sacrificed their lives to ensure that justice is obtained for a young girl (Gift Alonge, now demised), whose father had sexually abused and serially assaulted for years and even impregnated on multiple occasions.

“The BHI hereby calls for justice for Gift Alonge, as the accused (Jacob Alonge), changed his plea from guilty to not guilty after learning about his daughter’s death, as well as the death of other key witnesses.

“I urge all civil rights activists, feminist sisters, NGO colleagues and the Akoko-Edo community, especially the Ososo people, to rise to the occasion and demand the much-desired justice.”

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of the organisation, Grace Osakue, said the NGO did not believe that the accident was connected to Jacob’s alleged diabolical powers, adding that it was a mere coincidence.

The case had been adjourned till February 14, 2019.

CJN Onnoghen's Staff Chased Out Of His Office By Police

Security men, including personnel of the Nigeria Police Force yesterday chased out staff working in the office of the embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The sprawling office, with adjourning offices, occupied by CJN’s support staff, located at towards the back of the Supreme Court complex, was cleared by the men.

The suspended CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen was not in the office when the incident happened.

A source told The Nation that policemen arrived the CJN wing in the building around 7am and ordered everyone to leave.

The source claimed the move was intended to prevent the suspended CJN from further accessing his office.

“They came around 7am and ordered everyone to leave. They did not tell us why. We were not able to return to our office again until we closed yesterday,” the source said.

Meanwhile the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) yesterday adjourned indefinitely, proceedings in the case against Onnoghen.

Tribunal Chairman Danladi Umar announced the adjournment. He said the tribunal wishes to await the decision of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, in a motion for stay of proceedings filed by the CJN and on which arguments were taken on January 24 this year.

Umar said the adjournment was in obedience of the interim order of stay of proceedings made on January 24 by the Court of Appeal.

The tribunal commenced sitting at 11am, as against the usual practice where the tribunal sits by 10am.

Also yesterday, the Supreme Court resumed normal duties without signs betraying the recent unceremonious change in its leadership

The court opened for business at its usual time yesterday, while the court’s digital cause list switched on at a little after 8am, displayed the about 11 cases scheduled for hearing for the day.

At exactly 9.13am, proceedings commenced in Court One of the Supreme Court, when a five-man panel, led by the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad began sitiing.

The panel, which included Justices Mary Peter-Odili, Amiru Sanusi, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun and Paul Galinje conducted proceedings on cases.

Nigerian Woman Arrested For Allegedly Killing Her Son

Ondo State Police Command said yesterday that it had arrested a woman, Mrs. Ajoke Adebayo and her brother-in-law, Idowu Adebayo, for allegedly killing her son, 14-year-old Mathew.

The incident, which occurred last Saturday at Oda in Akure, the Ondo State capital, has reportedly thrown the community into a pensive mood.

Sources said Mathew, a JSS 3 pupil, was allegedly tortured to death by the suspects for ‘stealing N21,000’ from the bank account of his mother, Ajoke.

It was learnt that when Mrs. Adebayo noticed that her son had stolen the money, she informed her husband, Mr. Ayodele Adebayo.

Mr. Adebayo was alleged to have instructed his younger brother, Idowu, to punish the deceased.

A source said: “The woman (Ajoke) called her husband to inform him about what their son did. The husband then instructed his younger brother, Idowu, to discipline the boy.

“When Idowu was beating Mathew, Ajoke joined him and they injured the boy. Then they locked him inside a room and went away.

“A friend of the boy living in the area later alerted neighbours, who broke the door and found Mathew unconscious. They took him to hospital where he was confirmed dead.”

Men of the command were reportedly invited to the scene and they arrested the two suspects.

Police spokesman Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, said investigation had begun.

He said efforts were on to nab the deceased’s father.

Joseph said: “We have arrested the two suspects. Soon, we will arrest the father, who instructed that his son should be disciplined.”

Ambode To Be Impeached By Lagos Assembly? Gets Five Days To Defend Himself

The Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday urged Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to appear before it within one week on the controversy concerning this year’s budget.

The 2019 Appropriation Bill has not been presented to the lawmakers, causing hot disagreement between the Executive and the Legislature.

Last month, the governor sent the budget to the Assembly against the tradition of laying it before the Assembly.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa told his colleagues at yesterday’s plenary that it was important to give the governor a fair hearing on the budget.

The Speaker recalled that there had been violations of the Constitution and alleged infractions by the governor.

He said: “The Attorney General, the Finance Commissioner and Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, who ought to have advised the governor did not do so.

“The most important thing is that we should let the people know that a budget that was yet to be approved was being spent. This was why we could not attend to the governor on the budget on January 21.

“We must give them a fair hearing to come and explain what happened. The point has been made that there must be something before the Assembly before you can commence expenditure. We want to call on the governor to come within a week to explain himself along with the other officials.

“We can start gathering signatures for impeachment. We can exercise patience and wait till another time.”

Senate To Buhari: You Can't Remove CJN... Supreme Court Told To Reinstate Onnoghen

The Senate on Monday filed a suit before the Supreme Court praying for among others, an order reinstating Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The Senate action came after it cancelled its plenary billed for today.

The Clerk of the Senate, Mr Nelson Ayewoh, who announced the cancellation in a statement signed by him, did not give reasons for the action.

He only explained that the federal lawmakers would resume on February 19.

But the Special Adviser (Media) to the Senate President, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, in a statement explained that the cancellation was due to the last-minute decision by the Senate leadership to seek judicial interpretation to Onnoghen’s suspension by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday.

In the suit marked SC.76/2019, the Senate asked the apex court to declare the suspension of Onnoghen without a support of two-thirds majority of the Senate as a violation of section 292(1)(a)(i) of the constitution.

The suit also asked the apex court to issue an order restraining the two defendants in the suit – President Buhari and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami – from continuing or repeating the violation of the constitution and disregarding the power of the Senate in respect to the suspension of the CJN.

The three prayers sought by the Senate read, “A declaration that the suspension, by the President, of Hon. Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen from his office as Chief Justice of Nigeria on or about January 25, 2019, without an address calling for the removal, supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate is in violation of section 292(1)(a)(i) of the constitution and therefore null and void.

“An order rescinding or setting aside the suspension of Hon. Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen from his office as the Chief Justice of Nigeria and restoring him to the said office.

“An order restraining the defendants from continuing or repeating the violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and disregarding the powers of the Senate at the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Buhari had while announcing the suspension of Onnoghen hinged his decision on an ex parte order made by two of the three members of the Code of Conduct Tribunal where Onnoghen had been charged with six counts of non-declaration of assets.

The CCT order had directed the CJN to step aside from office pending the conclusion of his trial and ordered the President to swear in the next most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Tanko Muhammad, as the acting CJN.

But the Senate, through its counsel, Mr. Paul Erokoro (SAN), has, in its suit which was filed on Monday, faulted the President’s action.

It argued that the President could not on the directive of the CCT suspend the CJN without two-thirds majority of the Senate or appoint Muhammad as the acting CJN without Senate’s confirmation.

The plaintiff submitted two questions for determination.

One of the questions is if having regard to section 292 and Part 1 of the Third Schedule to the Nigerian Constitution and section 21 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, the President could not “suspend” or “prevent” the CJN from performing the functions of his office “on the directive of the Code of Conduct Tribunal or for any reason whatsoever, without an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate calling for the removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.”

The other question for determination read, “Having regard to section 231 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, and in particular, sub-sections (1) and (4) thereof, can the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria appoint an acting Chief Justice of Nigeria when there is no vacancy in that office and when the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria is fit and able to perform the functions of the office and without the recommendation of the National Council and confirmation of such appointment by the Senate.”

A Legal Assistant in the Office of the Senate President, Mr. Sambo Idahi, in an affidavit filed in support of the suit, said he attended a meeting of the principal officers of the Senate held on January 25, 2019 when the issue of Onnoghen was extensively discussed.

He said the meeting discussed the CCT’s ex parte order which the President anchored his action on and the swearing-in of Justice Muhammad as the acting CJN.

According to Idahi, Saraki informed the meeting that he was not consulted on the matter and never received any request from the President or any other person or authority to debate the issue.

He added that Saraki said Buhari had never requested the Senate’s approval of Justice Muhammad as the acting CJN.

The affidavit read in part, “On Friday, the 25th day of January, 2019, at about 5.40 pm, I was present at a meeting in the Senate Building attended by Principal Officers of the Senate, where the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria was extensively discussed.

“The discussions at the meeting centred on the public announcement made by the President of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari, on the 25th day of January, 2019, in which he revealed that he had suspended the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen, and appointed Hon. Justice l. T. Muhammad as the Chief Justice of Nigeria in an acting capacity. The President’s address during the swearing-in of Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad was also discussed at the meeting as well as the ex parte order made by the Code of Conduct Tribunal on which the President had acted.

“Hereto shown to me and marked Exhibit A is the said President Muhammadu Buhari’s address. The tribunal’s ex parte order is Exhibit B herein.

“I printed out Exhibits A and B from a HP desktop Computer and HP Laser Jet Pro 4ooMo1a in the office of the Senate President. We use the computer and printer aforesaid daily in the normal work of the Senate and throughout the period of their use, both have functioned accurately. Information has been regularly supplied to the computer in the ordinary cause of those activities information of the kind from which the exhibits were derived and the computer and printer have behaved properly and nothing has ever happened to make us question their reliability and accuracy.

“The President of the Senate informed the meeting that the Senate was not consulted on the matter and never received any request from the President or any other person or authority to debate the issue or present an address to the President for the removal or suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“The Senate President and other persons at the meeting repeatedly stated that the Senate had never met to vote on the removal or suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria and that no address had been passed by the Senate and presented or sent to the President of Nigeria for the Chief Justice to be removed or suspended.

“The meeting also noted that the Senate was not requested to confirm and did not confirm the appointment of Hon Justice l. T. Mohammed as acting Chief Justice.”

We only recognise Onnoghen as CJN –NBA
Meanwhile, the NBA has said it will only recognise Onnoghen as the CJN.

It also ordered its members across the country to boycott the courts on Tuesday and Wednesday in protest against Onnoghen’s suspension.

Rising from its emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee on Monday, the NBA said due process was not followed by Buhari in suspending Onnoghen and swearing in of Muhammad as the acting CJN.

The NBA also set up a committee led by two former Presidents of the association, Chief Wole Olanipekun and Abubakar Mahmud, to liaise with lawyers serving in the Buhari administration with a view to finding a solution to the problem.

Fayose Reacts As Tribunal Declares Fayemi Winner Of Ekiti Election

The Ekiti state governorship petition tribunal sitting in Abuja has declared Kayode Fayemi, governor of Ekiti as the winner of the last governorship election in the state.

Fayemi's victory was challenged by Kolapo Olusola of the PDP.

Olusola had filed a petition, alleging that the election was fraught with irregularities and that Fayemi who ran on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) could not be declared a winner.

On Monday, the tribunal unanimously struck out Olusola’s case and ruled that Fayemi is the duly elected governor of the state.

Reacting to the development, Fayose wrote; "I would have been surprised at the judgment of the tribunal if it had been otherwise because the judiciary was already coerced by the APC led federal government. In fact, the judgement was in public domain and celebrated by APC since the last few days."

Drama As Two Men 'Slap Policeman, Tear His Uniform' In Lagos

Two men — Ifeanyi Uzoma, 33; and Chukwendu Njoku, 33; — charged with tearing a policeman’s uniform, were on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Uzoma, a businessman, resident in Oshodi, and Njoku, a civil servant, who resides in Mushin, Lagos State, appeared before the Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Tanimola, on a two-count of obstruction of duty and conspiracy.

Both men, however, pleaded not guilty and were admitted to a bail of N80,000 each with one surety each, who should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

NAN reports that the prosecutor, Inspector Aondohemba Koti told the court that the accused committed the offences on January 21, at Papa-Ajao Street, Mushin, Lagos State.

He said that the accused obstructed the complainant, Inspector Tunde Ikuomola, from performing his lawful duty and also tore his uniform.

Koti said that the complainant was assaulted when he tried to question the accused, who parked a car on the road.

“The complainant and his team saw a Mercedes Benz parked on the road, in a suspicious way. When asked of their mission in that place at that time, they could not give a satisfactory answer.

“The accused were asked to open the vehicle for searching, but they refused.

“When the complainant insisted on searching the vehicle, the accused came down from the car; after slapping the complainant, he held his uniform and tore it. The accused were taken to the station,” the prosecutor said.

Tanimola adjourned the case until February 13, for mention.

CJN Onnoghen Breaks Silence

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, who was suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari last Friday, has debunked the rumour gaining traction online on Monday that he has resigned.

Onnoghen, whom President Muhammadu Buhari replaced with the next most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Tanko Mohammed, as Acting CJN, debunked the rumour in a statement on Monday.

The statement was signed by his media aide, Awassam Bassey, who described the CJN’s rumoured resignation as “fake news circulated by mischief makers.”

“Mischief makers are still circulating this fake news. Once again, no truth in it whatsoever. The Hon CJN, Hon Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, GCON, has not resigned,” Bassey said.

The rumour came less than 24 hours to the emergency meeting summoned by the National Judicial Council to deliberate on Onnoghen’s suspension and Muhammad’s emergence as the Acting CJN.

The Buhari administration has since Friday come under scathing and widespread criticism locally and from the international community over the action against Onnoghen for being ill-timed, coming in the eve of the general elections.

My Mum Told Me To Poison My Father - Son Reveals In Court

A 10-year-old boy on Monday told a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan that his mother asked him to put poison in his father’s food and bathing water.

Adenike Ayodele, the mother of the boy, had petitioned the court to dissolve her 15-year-old marriage to her estranged husband, Adeshina, on grounds of irresponsibility and battery.

In his testimony, the boy told the court that his mother
gave him a nylon which contained some powdery substance which she instructed him to pour in his father’s food as well as his bathing water.

“After giving me the substance, my mother warned me never to tell my father or anyone about it. However, I love my father and I told him because I never wanted any bad thing to happen to him,” he said.

Earlier, Adenike, who lives at Agbaje area of Orita-challenge, Ibadan, had told the court that Adeshina had turned her into a punching bag.

“At any slight opportunity, my husband beats me. For 14 years, Adeshina has not stopped beating me and the last one he did was the reason why I made up my mind to call it quits with him.

“On that day, I requested for money for the upkeep of the children and Adeshina gave me a beating resulting in blood dripping from my two ears.

“He also broke one of my legs that day and I am still experiencing the pain till today.

“Again, on December 5, 2018, Adeshina came to attack me in my shop because he was not happy that my business is doing well despite his inhumane treatment.

“Then, he threatened to ruin my business by all means and what followed was the burgling of my shop two Sundays ago.

“Now, all my means of livelihood have been burgled and I got him apprehended but without any positive result,” Adenike said.

In his response, Adeshina consented to the petitioner’s request for termination of the marriage, but denied all the allegations leveled against him.

“My lord, I had on different occasions given Adenike the children’s school fees.

“Aside that, when one of our children urgently needed a surgery to be performed on him, I gave Adenike the required money for the surgery, but she spent it on herself.

I sent her to school to acquire NCE, but she told the school management that she is a widow which means  that I am nothing to her.

“If I give her money to buy anything at home, she doesn’t put my name on the receipt.

“Worst of all, Adenike told our second child to put poison in my food and bathing water, but, the child revealed the secret to me and I informed my relatives about it,” Adeshina said.

All the witnesses that testified corroborated Adeshina’s submissions, NAN reports.

The petitioner, who was unruly during the court’s proceedings, was asked by the President of the court, Chief Ademola Odunade, to bring her parents to the court. He adjourned the case till Feb. 27 for judgment.

Saraki Opens Up: Buhari Govt. Would Have Silenced Me If...

Senate President Bukola Saraki says the President Muhammadu Buhari administration would have silenced him by any means possible if he had skeleton in his cupboard.

He said but for God and the support of the people “I will not be standing today.”

Saraki said this when he paid a visit to Muftau Gbadamosi, olofa of Offa, at his palace on Sunday.

“Since we joined the PDP the party has honored Kwara state, they gave us DG of Campaign, National Leader of the party and have agreed that if the party wins, senate president is our slot in Kwara,” he said.

“But what has the other party to offer? If I have skeleton in my cupboard, this government would have silenced me and forced me to drop the campaign.

“But for God and the support of the people I would not be standing today. They didn’t want to honor our agreement. We all laboured and what they couldn’t get in three times they got it and we demanded that they give to Kwara what we deserve.

“We need to teach our seasonal politicians a lesson on the poll date. We want community development, let everybody come and contribute their quota to our communities; when Saraki do his own, let them too do their own. I heard that some politicians have been buying JAMB forms in 2019. The question to ask is where were they in 2016, where were they in 2017?

“APC leaders in Kwara can’t access President Buhari for anything. They will first have to go and submit their request to Lagos and it is only when Lagos is satisfied with the request that it will be forwarded to Buhari who may or not do it.”

New Documentary Detailing Child Abuse Claims Against Michael Jackson Is So 'Devastating' Health Professionals Had To Be On Hand When It Debuted

A new documentary detailing graphic child abuse claims against Michael Jackson is so 'devastating and disturbing' that health professionals had to be on hand when it debuted last week.

The four-hour long Leaving Neverland was unveiled to a shocked audience at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, America, on Friday, where it was greeted with 'disgusted groans', reports SBS.

It focuses on Wade Robson, 36, and James Safechuck 40, who claim the late singer abused them as young boys.

Jackson's family and estate deny all the allegations, branding the programme "an outrageous and pathetic attempt to exploit and cash in."

Here are all the allegations from the documentary, and from other accusers who have come forward...

Masturbation

Robson was five when he met Jackson after winning a dance contest on the Australian leg of the singer's 1987 Bad tour.

After forging a close friendship, he claims the abuse started when Jackson allegedly introduced him to porn and alcohol aged seven.

Chillingly, Robson claims the singer had a cardboard cut-out of Peter Pan in his bedroom which he would look at while he masturbated behind him.

Hidden sex rooms

James Safechuck was 10 when he struck up an intense friendship with Jackson after starring in a Pepsi commercial alongside him.

He started staying the night in his bed, and claims the star told him he'd performed oral sex on him while he was asleep.

"He told me I was his first sexual experience," Safechuck said.

Alleging that Michael introduced him to masturbation, he said things quickly escalated and that they had sex all over the Neverland Ranch - including inside the castle, pool, attic and train station .

"It happened every day. It sounds sick, but when you're first dating somebody, you do a lot of it," he said.

According to Safechuck, the Nevada ranch was kitted out with hidden beds and secret locations - such as a locked, private box with one -way glass in his movie theatre - where the alleged molestations would take place.

Nicknames

Robson says Jackson would call him 'Little One' or 'Doo Doo' and bombarded the then seven year old with reams of faxes declaring his love.

Michael Jacobs-hagen - who met Jacko at Disneyland Paris when he was 14 - said he was dubbed 'Rubba Rubba' because Jackson would allegedly rub and touch him in bed.

"When I slept in his bed, we wore just boxer shorts and he would put his arm around me and push his body to my body, like you would with a girlfriend," Michael told The Mirror.

“He would put our bodies on each other and kiss me on the head and cheek. I woke many times and his hands were on me... one hand on the top of my legs and one hand around me.

“When he was high on his medication he would get closer in the same way as when a man gets drunk. It disinhibited him.

“He’d pull me closer and be grabbing me more and kissing me more on the head and on the cheek, He would also stroke my hair.

"I didn’t feel comfortable with it, but I thought ‘I can’t say No’. When you’re 14 and you’re there with the biggest megastar in the world, you say ‘okay’.

“He never carried out an explicit sexual act on me, but there were sexual intentions.

“He must have been getting something out of it sexually. I feel now like he was testing me, seeing how far he could go.”

Threats

Robson - whose 2013 lawsuit against Jackson's estate was denied by a judge on technical reasons - claims Jackson made it clear that if he confided in anyone, they would both be punished.

"If anyone ever found out that we were doing these sexual things, we would go to jail for the rest of our lives," he said. "I was terrified."

Robson also claims Jackson pressured him to testify on his behalf at 2005 trial where he was charged with molesting Gavin Arviso, 13.

Robson also defended Jackson in an interview with Access Hollywood three years later.

A private search to trace Emiliano Sala, pilot David Ibbotson and the missing aircraft which disappeared on Monday is to continue this week after launching on Saturday.

The official search for Sala , Mr Ibbotson and the aircraft they were flying on was officially called off on Thursday, leaving the footballer's family distraught.

Sala, who became Cardiff City's club record signing on Saturday, had been in Nantes saying farewell to his former club teammates and was returning to the Welsh capital when the light aircraft disappeared near the Channel Islands shortly after requesting to descend.

The search got underway immediately but was called off on Thursday afternoon after Guernsey harbour master Captain David Barker said "the chances of survival at this stage are extremely remote" and no trace of the aircraft, Sala or Mr Ibbotson had been found. Those involved have spoken to us about what it was like being inside the desperate centre of unfolding tragedy.

Sala's family, former teammates at French club Nantes and even the Argentine president pleaded for efforts to continue.

A remarkable crowdfunding campaign raised enough to finance a private search, with the new operation beginning on Saturday.

The GoFundMe page set up by Cardiff City striker Sala's representatives, Sport Cover, and family has been inundated with donations since going live on Friday. Its original target was €150,000, but it had surpassed its second target of €300,000 on Sunday.

The new private search saw two boats sent out into the English Channel on Saturday morning.

We now know they are two Guernsey fishing vessels “that have been visually scanning the area of the last radar contact for any clues to the plane’s whereabouts”.

Sala's family travelled to Guernsey on Sunday, where plans are being made on how to progress the second search.

Marine scientist David Mearns, who spoke on behalf of the Sala family on Sunday, is involved in coordinating this search.

He said the family still have hope and are treating this as a missing persons case, and said investigative, technical underwater searches are being considered.

Further details on how the search will progress are set to be released on Monday [today].

This comes after Sala's sister Romina visited Cardiff to meet club chiefs, before visiting the hundreds of floral tributes, shirts and messages that have been left outside Cardiff City Stadium, where she broke down in tears.

JOHESU Threatens Strike On Jan 31....

The Joint Health Sector Unions on Monday gave the Federal Government a January 31 deadline to resolve all disputes, and meet the unions’ outstanding demands, or face industrial action.

JOHESU’s National Chairman, Mr Josiah Biobelemoye, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the government had failed to adjust college skills for its members.

Biobelemoye also said that the government had withheld April and May 2018 salaries of some union members that participated in the last strike.

Other demands by JOHESU include the age-long struggle for recognition of consultancy cadre for eligible health workers and other outstanding allowances.

The five affiliate unions of JOHESU are the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals and Medical and Health Workers’ Union.

Others include the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions and Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria.

Josiah said that the unions would be compelled to embark on strike, if the government failed to meet its demands by January 31.

Trololo! Lagos Assembly Moves To Impeach Ambode

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday evening began moves to impeach Governor Akinwunmi Ambode over alleged gross misconduct.

The lawmakers at its plenary on Monday evening accused the governor of committing atrocities bordering on gross misconduct and spending budget that had not been laid before the House or approved by the Assembly.

Out of the 34 lawmakers who spoke at the plenary, 28 of them called for the impeachment of the governor while six others called on the governor to resign.

Also, the lawmakers, through a voice vote stood for the impeachment of the governor.

Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa said there was need for the House to give Ambode a last chance to appear before the House to explain the allegations and infractions levelled against him.

He said the Assembly has given the governor one week to appear before it to explain his own side of the story or faced impeachment.

Obasa, therefore, asked the lawmaker who still wanted the governor to be impeached to start gathering signatures.

The lawmakers, therefore, agreed to summon the governor, the Commissioners for Finance; Economic Planning and Budget and the Attorney General to appear at their next meeting on Monday.

My Mother Told Me To Put Poison In Dad’s Food, Ten-Year-Old Tells Court

A 10-year-old boy on Monday told a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan that his mother asked him to put poison in his father’s food and bathing water.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Adenike Ayodele, the mother of the boy, had petitioned the court to dissolve her 15-year-old marriage to her estranged husband, Adeshina, on grounds of irresponsibility and battery.

In his testimony, the boy told the court that his mother gave him a package which contained some powdery substance which she instructed him to pour in his father’s food as well as his bathing water.

“After giving me the substance, my mother warned me never to tell my father or anyone about it.

“However, I love my father and I told him because I never wanted any bad thing to happen to him,” he said.

Earlier, Adenike, who lives at Agbaje area of Orita-challenge, Ibadan, had told the court that Adeshina had turned her into a punching bag.

“At any slight opportunity, my husband beats me.

“For 14 years, Adeshina has not stopped beating me and the last one he did was the reason why  I made up my mind to quit the marriage.

“On that day,  I requested for money for the upkeep of the children and  Adeshina beat me so much, blood started to drip from my two ears.

“He also broke one of my legs that day and I am still experiencing the pain till today.

“Again, on December 5, 2018, Adeshina came to attack me in my shop because he was not happy that my business is doing well despite inhumane treatment.

“I sent her to school to acquire NCE, but she told the school management that she is a widow which means  that I am nothing to her.

“If I give her money to buy anything at home, she doesn’t put my name on the receipt.

“Worst of all, Adenike told our second child to put poison in my food and bathing water, but, the child revealed the secret to me and I informed my relatives about it,” Adeshina said.

NAN reports that all the witnesses that testified corroborated Adeshina’s submissions.

The petitioner, who was unruly during the court ’s proceedings, was asked by the President of the court, Chief Ademola Odunade, to bring her parents to the court.

Odunade adjourned the case till February 27 for judgment.
