Sad! More than Half Of Boys In UK Young Offender Jails Are From Black Or Ethnic Minority Backgrounds

More than half of boys held in young offender institutions in 2017-18 were from a black or minority ethnic background (BME), a watchdog report has indicated.

The percentage of BME detainees was the highest recorded since HM Inspectorate of Prisons began carrying out the analysis in 2001.

The figure of 51 per cent was three percentage points up on the previous year's 48 per cent.

Only two years ago a landmark review by Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy raised concerns that the proportion of black, Asian and minority ethnic youth prisoners had increased despite an overall fall in under-18s in custody.


Commenting on the latest findings, Mr Lammy said: 'This is deeply alarming and now must be viewed as an urgent national crisis.

'We are not only failing to make progress to address these racial inequalities; things are getting significantly worse.

'From childhood right through to courts and adult prisons, our justice system entrenches and exacerbates the divides in our society.'

Researchers found the proportion of boys who identified as being from a black or minority ethnic background varied significantly from facility to facility.

At the Keppel Unit - Her Majesty's Young Offenders Institute (YOI) Wetherby, a male juvenile prison outside York - it was one-in-five (21 per cent).

At HMP Feltham, a male juvenile jail in Hounslow in west London, in was nearly three-quarters (71 per cent).

The figures are detailed in a study of perceptions of those between 12 and 18 who were held in YOIs or secure training centres (STCs) in England and Wales from April 2017 to March 2018.

The assessment, published today, covers the experiences of boys in five male YOIs, plus a specialist unit for boys; and children, including a small number of girls, held in three STCs.

Okorocha Talks Tough Over APC Action Against Him

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has told National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Lanre Issa-Onilu, to let the Imo State chapter be.

According to the governor, Issa-Onilu and his cohorts have done enough harm by imposing an intruder and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governorship candidate.

Okorocha, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, said: “It has become necessary to appeal to the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Lanre Issa-Onilu, and those behind him, to please leave the Imo State chapter of the party alone after inflicting deep cut on the party by imposing a known PDP member as the governorship candidate.

“Twenty-four hours to the presidential rally in Owerri, Mr. Issa-Onilu had no other contribution to make than to raise false alarms, and making disturbing claims that APC has removed Governor Rochas Okorocha as the campaign coordinator. He added that APC has alerted the police and DSS of plots by Okorocha and Uche Nwosu to disrupt the rally.

“It is unfortunate that in their effort to justify whatever they had eaten over the governorship ticket, they have decided to be callous about the whole thing. Otherwise, they would have known that the rally is Okorocha’s event.

“In any case, Governor Okorocha has never been the party’s state campaign coordinator. He is rather President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign coordinator as he was among those inaugurated by the President, and Issa-Onilu and his group cannot remove who they never appointed. So, his claim was borne out of ignorance.

“To say the least, Imo is calm. Governor Okorocha is duly in-charge. The presidential rally will hold, and peacefully too. They had raised that false alarm to discourage the president from attending the rally like they did during the presidential rally for youths and women.

“The point is that truth lives while lies do not live. These Abuja-based politicians have fed them with lies and they took or bought the lies wholesale. Otherwise, how would someone think that a man who went to the Senate through the court would now know Imo Politics more than a man who has won two governorship elections, and on the platforms of parties that were not in power at the centre?”

Ojukwu Was A Failed Hero, says Gov. El-Rufai Son

Bashir, son of Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, says the leader of the defunct Biafran Republic, Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, was a failed hero.

Bashir said this in a Twitter post while reacting to a comment.

The governor’s son had said Enugu State was the homeland of Ojukwu instead of Nnewi in Anambra State

However, when his error was brought to his notice, rather than apologising, Bashir said, “Knowing your failed hero’s homeland that plunged misguided idiots into a civil war and ran away is not my concern. You do your research and find out his hometown.

“I could care less for the man. And he will forever remain a dent in our history.”

When the follower reacted by saying Ojukwu would remain greater than Governor el-Rufai, who kneels down to greet the President and others, Bashir said Ojukwu was a fearful man who ran away when the Nigerian forces were closing in on him.

He added, “Don’t cry please. Your hero was a failure that ran away when he saw imminent defeat. Get out of here.”

Atiku Warns President Buhari

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Monday warned the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress against plunging Nigeria into a constitutional crisis and in the process derailing the country’s democracy.

According to the former Vice-President, the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, is “an attack on the judiciary”.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Atiku accused the Muhammadu Buhari government of “executive lawlessness”.

He said, “I must warn the APC government to desist from taking actions that may push us further down the slippery slope towards a major constitutional crisis that could derail the electoral process.

“General Muhammadu Buhari must remember that he is a beneficiary of a free and fair election. It is therefore a matter of honour for him to allow a political environment and process that gives everyone confidence.

“I commend all Nigerians and friends of Nigeria who have expressed outrage at the unlawful removal of Onnoghen, an action which constitutes a flagrant breach of our constitution and a frontal assault on our democracy. I want to note the universal condemnation of this unlawful act by all Nigerians, as well as the international community.”

He added, “I need to state that this latest action by General Muhammadu Buhari falls squarely within the pattern of executive lawlessness that has now been firmly turned into statecraft by the APC government.

“The serial disregard of court orders, and consequent violation of constitutionally guaranteed human rights of our citizens confirms beyond all doubt that General Buhari and his government would rather obey their own whims and operate by separate rules outside the well-established constitutional order and the rule of law. It scarcely requires emphasis that this behaviour is alien to democratic rules and more in line with that of a military dictator.”

Atiku said the nation’s judiciary must not only be above suspicion but must also be seen to be manifestly above board.

He said the issue at stake was not whether Onnoghen was guilty or not, but whether his suspension was constitutional.

He said, “To create a condition that allows the constitution and the rule of law to become secondary to any other agenda is to pave the way for tyranny. History is replete with odious dictators whose path to dictatorship started with statements of good intentions.

“We must therefore remain vigilant in defence of our democracy.”

The ex-VP added, “With this attack on the judiciary, General Buhari has set a new precedent in our democracy that has no equivalence in our history, not even in the darkest days of military dictatorship. This cannot be allowed to stand.”

British Woman Jailed For 'Drugs' In Egypt Is Denied Of Seeing Her Egyptian Husband As She's Freed

British woman Laura Plummer has flown home from Egypt after a 14-month ordeal in prison for carrying illegal painkillers.

The 34-year-old from Hull was granted an early release from her three-year sentence for taking 290 Tramadol tablets into the country.

She said police had led her into the airport terminal, denying her the chance to say goodbye to her Egyptian partner Omar Caboo.

But she hinted she could return to the country to see her partner, for whom she said she had brought the tablets, The Sun reported.


As she prepared to return to Britain last night she told the newspaper: 'I'm so happy to be free from prison at last and coming home.

'I just want to get home and have a long bath and to get in my own bed. It's been like living a nightmare but one which I never woke up from.

'It's been a terrible ordeal for me and my family and to think it's finally all over is overwhelming.'

She said Mr Caboo had 'refused to give up on me' and that 'our love has survived the most traumatic of ordeals', saying: 'For that reason I can't say I won't ever go back'.

Miss Plummer was arrested by Egyptian authorities on October, 9 2017, when she flew into the Red Sea resort of Hurghada from Manchester Airport.

She claimed she was taking the tablets - which are legal in the UK but banned in Egypt - for her Egyptian partner Omar Caboo, who suffers from severe back pain, and had no idea what she was doing was wrong.

Miss Plummer and Mr Saad had an Orfi marriage, which is not registered with the state but allows them to share a hotel room.

She was initially charged with smuggling drugs, which carries the death penalty.

Husband Convicted Of Murdering Wife & Child, Writes Her Parents From Prison Saying She Carried Out The Murder

A British man convicted of murdering his wife and nine-month-old baby has written to his dead partner's parents from prison to claim she was behind the deaths.

Neil Entwistle, now aged 40, was found guilty in 2008 of killing his 27-year-old Rachel and their daughter Lillian in Hopkinton, near Boston, Massachusetts.

But former IT consultant Entwistle has written to Rachel's parents from prison to insist she had killed their baby before turning the gun on herself.

The letter is revealed in a book by Entwistle's 62-year-old father Cliff, who also maintains his son's innocence.


In the letter he wrote: 'I did not kill Rachel and Lilly but I do carry the guilt and in no way blame Rachel. And this is where it is difficult for me to share openly.

'For over seven years, I have never shared what I saw and what I know of all that transpired on the day we both lost Rachel and Lilly, the two most wonderful people ever to bless our lives.'

Offering to speak to Rachel's parents in person Entwistle said he wanted to 'share with you all I know' about the deaths.


The Nottingham engineer is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders on January 20, 2006.

Autopsy results showed that Rachel died of a gunshot wound to the head and Lillian of a gunshot wound to the torso.

Entwistle fled the country hours after the deaths, boarding a British Airways flight to London at 8.15am on January 21 after withdrawing $800 in cash.

He was later arrested at Royal Oak underground station in London and extradited to the United States to face trial for murder.

Prosecutors argued at the murder trial that Entwistle killed his wife and daughter because he was upset about his failure to find employment.

The trial heard that he was heavily in debt and lying to his wife about his job prospects while secretly looking for extra-marital sex on the internet.

Shortly before the killings he had searched the web for instructions on how to kill someone, prosecutors said.

He is serving the two life sentences at the Old Colony Correctional Center in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Entwistle had claimed in a taped phone call from Britain that he found his wife and baby dead after returning from a shopping trip.

The Entwistles met as students at the University of York in 1999, where American student Rachel was studying abroad.

INEC Douses Tension As Fire Guts Rivers Office

The Independent National Electoral Commission has doused tension over the fire that gutted a part of its office in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Obo Effanga, told The Punch in a telephone interview that the fire was as a result of electrical fault.

There were speculations in some quarters that some arsonists set fire on the INEC office in the area. But Effanga said it was nothing to worry about, adding that the situation had been brought under control.

FG Planning To Eliminate Me, Ortom Alleges

The Governor of Benue State, Mr Samuel Ortom, on Monday raised the alarm that the Federal Government was planning to eliminate him.

He said the Federal Government should be held responsible if anything bad happened to him, adding that he was being persecuted.

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja, the governor added that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had been ‘chasing’ him and his staff.

He alleged that an unnamed cabal had taken over the President Muhammadu Buhari regime.


Ortom said, “All of us should stand up and chase away that cabal because we did not elect any cabal. I am being persecuted because the cabal doesn’t like me. They do all sort of things and the EFCC has been chasing me and my staff for the past 10 months. I am not afraid and I have not done anything wrong.

“But they have been chasing me all over the place. Persecution is so much and they have been threatening my life. If I die today, the Federal Government should be held responsible. They are responsible because they are planning to even eliminate me but I am not going to stop. I will continue to defend my people. The primary responsibility of any responsible government is to defend the people and provide security for lives and property.”

The governor said he was ready to concede victory if he lost the governorship election in a transparent and credible electoral process.

Drivers Arrested For Attempting To Kidnap Employer’s Wife

Two drivers, Emmanuel Okomeyin, 27, and Anyia Austine, 30, have been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to kidnap their employer’s wife.

The accused, whose residential addresses were not provided, are facing two counts of conspiracy and attempted kidnap.

According to the police prosecutor, Michael Unah, the accused allegedly attempted to kidnap their employer’s wife, Mrs Ijeoma Ezeokafor, from her residence.

Unah said the accused committed the offences on October 26, 2018, around 1pm at 1A Dora Crescent, Ajah, Lagos.


He added that the duo conspired to kidnap Ijeoma with the hope of collecting the sum of N20m as ransom from her husband.

Unah stated, “The police got the information from an undisclosed source that the accused were planning to kidnap their employer’s wife at her residence in order to collect N20m ransom from her husband.

“A team of policemen went to the residence of the complainant and let the cat out of the bag and the accused were handed over to the police.”

The charges read, “That you, Emmanuel Okomeyin and Anyia Austine, on October 26, 2018, around 1pm in Ajah, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; kidnapping, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

“That you, Emmanuel Okomeyin and Anyia Austine, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did attempt to kidnap one Ijeoma Ezeokafor, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 406 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The presiding magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two responsible sureties each in like sum.

Fashola said the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the court.

In addition, he said the sureties must be blood relations of the accused and also reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The magistrate adjourned the case till February 25, 2019, for mention.

The police were called on Blac Chyna and new boyfriend Kid Buu after a physical altercation according to a new report.

TMZ reported on Monday that the Lashed founder and rapper, both 30-years-old, were in a heated argument that turned violent during their vacation in Hawaii.

Law enforcement arrived to their Four Seasons hotel room in Honolulu in the wee hours of Monday morning.

TMZ's source said that Chyna had accused Kid Buu of cheating and just before 7AM it became physical.


Chyna scratched the rapper and then he slammed her against the wall several times and choked her according to the insider.

Just Imagine! Father Denies Charge As Daughter He Impregnated Die In Accident

A native doctor, Jacob Alonge, who was accused of impregnating his own daughter, Gift, has retracted his guilty plea.

The 54-year-old man, who was to be sentenced after pleading guilty to charges of incest, reportedly changed his plea after the news that his 17-year-old daughter had died in an accident on the way to a magistrates’ court in Benin City, Edo State.

Among those who also died in the ill-fated vehicle were Gift’s uncle, Mr Ukere Adagbogu; a worker with a non-governmental organisation, BraveHeart Initiative for Youth and Women, Ms Promise Ezekiel; and the driver, Paul Opashi.

Another worker with the NGO, Ms Rhoda Braimoh, who was in a critical condition, was reported to have also given up the ghost, bringing the casualty figure to five.

The Punch had reported that Gift and her father lived in Ososo, Akoko-Edo area of Edo State.

Jacob, who was said to possess diabolical powers, was alleged to have aborted the first pregnancy that resulted from the incest in 2017, using herbal concoctions.

The second pregnancy was said to have caught the attention of the local vigilante group, which handed him over to the traditional ruler of the Ososo community.

At the Ososo Police Station, Jacob allegedly made a confessional statement, as the case was transferred to the family unit of the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Benin City.

A scan was said to have revealed that Gift was 21 weeks pregnant.

The police subsequently arraigned the suspect before a family court at the Evbuoraria Magistrates’ Court, Benin, where he pleaded guilty to the charges in December 2018.

On January 16, 2019, the day the suspect was to be sentenced, the pregnant Gift, her uncle, workers of the NGO who were helping her, the driver and the leader of the community vigilante group were involved in a fatal accident at Ewu, Edo State.

The judgment was reportedly suspended when the news of the tragedy got to the attention of the court.

Shaken by the incident, the NGO also shut down operations.

It was learnt that when the matter came up on January 16, 2019, Jacob changed his plea from guilty to not guilty.

The founder of BraveHeart, Ms Priscilla Usiobaifo, in a statement on Sunday, said only justice would assuage the hurt of the organisation.

Usiobaifo added, “They (victims) died on the field, while serving humanity. They sacrificed their lives to ensure that justice is obtained for a young girl (Gift Alonge, now demised), whose father had sexually abused and serially assaulted for years and even impregnated on multiple occasions.

“The BHI hereby calls for justice for Gift Alonge, as the accused (Jacob Alonge), changed his plea from guilty to not guilty after learning about his daughter’s death, as well as the death of other key witnesses.

“I urge all civil rights activists, feminist sisters, NGO colleagues and the Akoko-Edo community, especially the Ososo people, to rise to the occasion and demand the much-desired justice.”

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of the organisation, Grace Osakue, said the NGO did not believe that the accident was connected to Jacob’s alleged diabolical powers, adding that it was a mere coincidence.

The case had been adjourned till February 14, 2019.

CJN Onnoghen's Staff Chased Out Of His Office By Police

Security men, including personnel of the Nigeria Police Force yesterday chased out staff working in the office of the embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The sprawling office, with adjourning offices, occupied by CJN’s support staff, located at towards the back of the Supreme Court complex, was cleared by the men.

The suspended CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen was not in the office when the incident happened.

A source told The Nation that policemen arrived the CJN wing in the building around 7am and ordered everyone to leave.

The source claimed the move was intended to prevent the suspended CJN from further accessing his office.

“They came around 7am and ordered everyone to leave. They did not tell us why. We were not able to return to our office again until we closed yesterday,” the source said.

Meanwhile the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) yesterday adjourned indefinitely, proceedings in the case against Onnoghen.

Tribunal Chairman Danladi Umar announced the adjournment. He said the tribunal wishes to await the decision of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, in a motion for stay of proceedings filed by the CJN and on which arguments were taken on January 24 this year.

Umar said the adjournment was in obedience of the interim order of stay of proceedings made on January 24 by the Court of Appeal.

The tribunal commenced sitting at 11am, as against the usual practice where the tribunal sits by 10am.

Also yesterday, the Supreme Court resumed normal duties without signs betraying the recent unceremonious change in its leadership

The court opened for business at its usual time yesterday, while the court’s digital cause list switched on at a little after 8am, displayed the about 11 cases scheduled for hearing for the day.

At exactly 9.13am, proceedings commenced in Court One of the Supreme Court, when a five-man panel, led by the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad began sitiing.

The panel, which included Justices Mary Peter-Odili, Amiru Sanusi, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun and Paul Galinje conducted proceedings on cases.
