Don't Give Up Despite Buhari's Poor Performance - Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has appealed to Nigerians to have faith in the country despite what he called the underperformance of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The former President spoke in Abuja on Thursday at the public presentation of a book titled, ‘Politics as dashed hopes in Nigeria,’ which was written by Dr Auwalu Anwar, a former aide to Obasanjo.

The former president was the chairman at the event.

Obasanjo asked Nigerians to rise and defend the country’s democracy.

He said the time was ripe for every Nigerian to have the Nigerian dream “where there must be some commonalities.”

Obasanjo regretted that nothing had changed since Buhari assumed office, especially in the areas of security, fighting corruption and job creation.

He added that in few months’ time, elections would hold in four West Africa Countries of Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire.

He told the gathering that one common feature in the elections was that the four incumbent presidents were in the opposition from where they won their elections.

He said, “I am not in despair and I would ask the rest of us not to be in despair; our hope lies in democracy with good governance as some of the hallmarks were free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

“Things may be gloomy, things may not be what they should be, leadership may be underperforming, but we must not lose hope.

“And I believe if we all see ourselves first as Nigerians and then we enunciate for ourselves the Nigerian dream, a land flowing with milk and honey, a land of opportunity, a land that gives you a stake in all that it is, I think, we will have a country that we can all be proud of.”

He also spoke about the book, which deals with the Buhari presidency.

Obasanjo said, “The book is about the Buhari organisation, Congress for Progressive Change, All Progressive Congress and Buhari’s political life and activities up to the second year of Buhari’s administration.

“President Buhari served the purpose of galvanizing efforts to get Jonathan and the PDP out of office.

“But on the midterm score card, Dr Anwar pointed out three significant and tangible areas of failure; security, fighting corruption and job creation. These three areas are still not yet a success story.”

Rich Kidnapper Evans Trial Suffers: The Updates

A prosecution witness, Inspector Idowu Haruna, scheduled to testify in the trial of a suspected billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike aka Evans, was yesterday reported to be involved in an accident.

State prosecuting counsel Adebayo Haroun, who disclosed this before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of an Ikeja Special Offence Court, explained that the development was the reason the police officer was absent in court.

The development stalled proceedings in the charges preferred against Evans and three other members of his gang for allegedly shooting the Young Shall Grow Motors (YSG), Chairman, Chief Obianuju Vincent and killing of two of his escorts, before Justice Taiwo.

Evans and three co-defendants, Joseph Ikenna Emeka, 29, Chiemeka Arinze, 39, and Udeme Frank Upong, 43, are facing a seven-count charge of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to kidnap and selling of firearms.

Although details of the accident were not stated, Haroun told the court that the witness sent an SMS informing him of his current predicament.

“My lord, our first prosecution witness is not present in court today. He is not in court because he had a slight accident.

“He sent me an SMS saying he was involved in an accident and therefore cannot make it for today’s proceedings. We craved the indulgence of the court to grant another date for trial.”

At the last proceeding, Inspector Haruna had told the court that Evans shot Chief Obianuju in his right arm while attempting to kidnap him. He said his driver, Peter Nweke and an escort, Chijoke Ngozi, were shot dead during a gun duel between the police escorts and the gang.

Three of the kidnappers were also shot dead by Inspector Solomon Igwe, while the rest fled.

In a related development, the defence team of the suspected kidnap kingpin, led by Olanrewaju Ajanaku, failed to serve copies of their final written address on the prosecution for the trial-within-trial on the admissibility of the alleged ‘confessional statement’ of Evans.

The development stalled proceedings in another charge against Evans and Victor Aduba, a dismissed officer of the Army, before same court.

Haroun had complained that a copy of the final written address by Mr. Emmanuel Ochai, counsel to Aduba, was also served on his team late yesterday.

He said that of Evans, the first defendant, had not been served on them.

Responding, Evans‘ counsel, Ajanaku, said his inability to file the documents was as a result of a ‘mix up’. He assured the prosecution that the defence final written address would get to them between yesterday and today.

Evans and Aduba are facing a four-count charge of kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.

They were alleged to have kidnapped Mr. Sylvanus Ahamonu, holding him hostage for nine weeks and collecting $420,000 ransom from his family.

The defence had claimed in the on-going trial-within-trial that their alleged confessional statements were obtained by coercion by members of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team.

Justice Taiwo adjourned the two cases till February 6.

It’s Over! Kashamu Floors Adebutu As INEC Releases His Name As Ogun’s PDP Governorship Candidate

Oh Kashamu! You might not like him. But Kashamu sure has a God that answers him, hehehe. From one ‘trouble’ to another, his God always settles him. So the long battle of who will rep PDP Ogun state for the March 2, 2019 governorship election seem to have finally being settled now! No more drama!

For months, Buruji Kashamu and a member of House of Representatives, Oladipupo Adebutu, had been battling who will carry the party’s flag.

But yesterday all that came to an end, as INEC released its list with Kashamu emerging PDP’s candidate.

Few hours before the release, both Kashamu and Oladipupo Adebutu, had embarked on a ward-to-ward tour to woo voters.

As soon as the news filtered into town that INEC had pasted Kashamu’s name, some loyalists of Kashamu went into jubilation.

However, members of the party loyal to Adebutu expressed shock.

A media aide to Adebutu, Afolabi Orekoya, said, “Kashamu should not be happy. We know once the judgements are delivered, everything will be sorted out and INEC will do the needful.”

Will Meghan Have Her Baby At The Lindo Wing? Maternity Unit Tells Staff To Avoid Holiday In April

The Lindo Wing maternity ward has told its staff to avoid taking holiday in April, prompting speculation that the first child of Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex will be born at the London hospital.

The six-months-pregnant Duchess revealed on a visit to Birkenhead last month that her baby is due in April or May.

Prince Harry, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge's three children were all born at the maternity unit at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington.

The instructions to staff at the hospital suggest that Meghan, 37, will follow suit, the Daily Telegraph reported.

A source told the newspaper: ''Staff at the Lindo Wing have been asked not to take holiday in April.

'Everyone thinks it's got something to do with the royal baby but no one is confirming anything.'

Last month Meghan stopped in Birkenhead to chat to royal fan Kim Thompson, who said later: 'She said she is six months pregnant and due at the end of April, beginning of May.'

Ariana Grande Sued By An Artist Over Her Video For God Is A Woman

Artist Vladimir Kush is suing Ariana Grande and a production company she worked with for copyright infringement over a series of shots in her video for God Is a Woman he says was lifted from one of his paintings.

Kush is asking a court to issue an injunction to take the clip offline, which has racked up more than 197 million YouTube views since its July 13, 2018 debut.

In the video, a silhouette of the Boca Raton, Florida native, 25, is seen dancing where a candle wick would be, with vivid, cloudy skies in the background.

Kush said that around 2000, he produced a pair of paintings titled The Candle and The Candle 2, of which Grande and the production team at Freenjoy, Inc explicitly lifted the concepts to fit into the music video, he claims.

Among the common elements in Kush's art and the outtakes of Grande's clip include the concepts, composition and background.

In a description of the painting on his website, Kush described the concepts applied in the work.

'In the painting a woman holds the torch of the spiritual light dispersing the dark night of ignorance,' he explained. 'Inspired by spiritual passion she turns herself to the invisible forces of cosmos controlling the elements on Earth.

'She prays to save and protect her home and her family, and the fertility of the earth… Generations come and go, but the lamp of life is passed from hand to hand like a baton is being passed from runner to runner.'

Kush told the court that Freenjoy, Inc has a history of plagiarism, pointing to their past work on Kendrick Lamar's 2018 video for All the Stars, his Grammy-nominated track from the Black Panther soundtrack.

I Gave EFCC N300million To Begin Operations - Atiku

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says he gave a loan of N300million to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from privatisation proceeds to commence activities when the anti-graft agency was set up.

He also said one of the ways to tackle corruption is to reduce the personal relationship between individuals in the public and private sectors.

He stated this on Wednesday night when he featured on ‘The Candidates’, a presidential town hall co-production between Daria Media and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), with support from the MacArthur Foundation and anchored by Kadaria Ahmed.

Speaking on how he hopes to fight corruption, Atiku stressed that he would embrace prevention measures as well as punitive measures.

His words: “There is need for us to go by the adage of the English saying, which states ‘Prevention is better than cure’. We can keep it going side by side — punitive measures and prevention measures — and my point is that we should be able to introduce technology in our public service and even in the private sector, so the relationship with the members of the public and private is not personal.

“I made an example of the United Arab Emirates, whose citizens are not as educated as Nigerians, and hereby introduced technology amongst the public sector. They have virtually eliminated corruption. I want to automate the public sector and make sure the contact that brings about corruption is eliminated. When you eliminated that, you would have reduced corruption to the barest minimum.”

On the activities of the EFCC as well as ensuring that corrupt public officials are not shielded from being prosecuted, even if they were his friends, he continued: “My quarrel with the judicial system is that there is too much delay, if we can shuttle the delay so that justice is being set out immediately, the better for us.

“Looking at the legislature and the procedure in dealing with the judiciary, you know that the cases we initiated during our administration are still in court. Where is the justice there? We set up the EFCC. I, in particular, brought the piece of drafting regulation from Brazil, and it was based on that draft, legislation was crafted. When it was eventually passed by the National Assembly, the EFCC did not even have the money in the budget to start the operation. I borrowed them N300million from the privatisation proceeds and I said ‘you better get to work’.

“The following year when there was budgetary allocation; they repaid the money. So I believe the period that it takes, most of the convictions that you are hearing today were cases from our administration.”

No Candidates For APC In Zamfara State - INEC Insists

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has insisted on its earlier decision to bar the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from fielding candidates for state and federal elections in Zamfara state.

The commission stated this in a statement by Festus Okoye, one of its National Commissioners and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee.

The statement reads: “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) met today, 30th January 2019 and among other things approved the final list of candidates for the Governorship State Assembly and FCT Area Council elections scheduled to hold on 2nd March 2019. On the whole, there are 1, 066 candidates for the Governorship elections, 14, 583 for the State Assembly elections and 806 for the FCT Area Council elections broken down into 105 Chairmanship candidates and 701 Councillorship candidates.

“The Commission reviewed the situation concerning the All Progressives Congress (APC) fielding candidates for the Governorship and State Assembly elections in Zamfara State. Commission noted that there are two court judgements on the matter one from a State High Court in Gusau and the other from a Federal High Court in Abuja.

"The former judgement clearly said that the APC conducted primaries in Zamfara State, contrary to the position of the Commission. On the other hand, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the party did not conduct valid primaries and therefore is ineligible to field candidates for the elections.

"The Commission would like to reaffirm its commitment to obeying all court judgements, even when it disagrees with them. However, these are clearly two contradictory judgements delivered by two courts of coordinate jurisdiction on the same day.

“Consequently, the Commission has decided to maintain its original position that the party in question did not conduct primaries and therefore, in line with Section 87 of the Electoral Act 20l0 (as amended), is not eligible to field candidates for the National Assembly, Governorship and State Assembly elections in Zamfara State.

“Commission also reviewed various aspects of its preparedness for the 20l9 general elections and expressed satisfaction with the overall preparations for the elections. A meeting with all the Resident Electoral Commissioners will take place next week to further review the state of preparedness of each State”, INEC stated.

INEC Will Accept APC Candidates In Zamfara - Gov Yari Insists

Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state said from the information he received, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has accepted the list of APC candidates from Zamfara state.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Yari claimed that
the electoral body has complied with the state’s High Court order asking the INEC to accept the APC’s candidates and barring the national secretariat from substituting the names of the candidates that won the primaries conducted on the 7th of October 2018.

He said the order was served to the national secretariat adding that INEC and the party has complied with the court order. He said the APC would fully participate in the forth coming general elections.

“As of today (Thursday), from the information we received, the Independent National Electoral Commission has accepted our candidates as ordered by the court.

“It was really a serious legal battle and and I think it is over now with the acceptance of our candidates and we are grateful to the party stalwarts for the fact that despite the crisis no member of the party defected because they believed in the struggle and they have understood that it is the test of time,” he added.

He said vigorous electioneering campaign would commence on Monday as soon as President Muhammadu Buhari who will be visiting the state on campaign tour leaves the state on Sunday.

He said they know that some of the defendants might appeal the case and if they did that they would follow the case up to whatever level of jurisdiction urging the party faithfuls to remain calm as they would emerged victorious at the polls.

“There is no court order directing the party or INEC to do one thing or the other apart from the one issued by the states’ high court and we are highly grateful for that,” he said.
