Atiku ‘Moved To Tears’ By Endorsement Of Afenifere, Ohanaeze

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has relished the endorsement by five socio cultural associations, saying the move has placed a greater challenge on his assignment.

The Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Northern Elders Forum, Pan-Niger Delta Forum and the Middle Belt Forum after a meeting in Abuja on Sunday, thrown their full weight behind Atiku’s presidential aspiration.

In a statement Sunday, which he personally signed, Atiku expressed hope for the country as Nigerians go to the polls to elect a new President in a few days.

The statement reads: “I am moved to tears that in the midst of deep divisions and deliberate use of instrumentalities of state to set our people against themselves in the last three and a half years, responsible and respected leaders across Nigeria have agreed to come together for the purpose of endorsing my candidature for the February 16th, 2019 presidential elections.

“The endorsement by the leading lights of our nationalities – Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Northern Elders Forum, Pan-Niger Delta Forum and Middle Belt Forum is a loud statement that there is hope for our country as we go to the polls in a few days.

“Today we put aside all our prejudices to elect a President with religion and ethnicity playing no role in our elections. I profusely thank our Leaders across the country who have created this wonderful moment for us to come to the table of brotherhood.

“Once again, and in the words of our old National Anthem, we can proudly sing: ‘Though tribes and tongues may differ, in brotherhood we stand’.

The opposition presidential candidate said the endorsement has buoyed him to lead a Pan-Nigerian team that will give practical interpretation to what has been done by the time he takes the baton of leadership of the country, “by the grace of Allah, on May 29, 2019”.

Continuing, Atiku said: “Many countries of the world have been led into disintegration by strongmen (one in each country) and we have seen how individuals who understand the management of diversities have rallied their people for unity.

“I have been chosen to unite our people and exactly that I will. I will run a properly federated Nigeria through constitutional reforms to bring out the best from all sections of Nigeria to make Nigeria work again like in the past when the Saudi Royal family came to Nigeria to access Medicare.

“We will promote an inclusive Nigeria based on productivity that every section of Nigeria will bring out the best under their soil, and in their brains to make Nigeria assume its position in Africa and the global community.

“It would be 100% for every section of Nigeria as I would not understand any arithmetic outside that. I enjoin our people across Nigeria to come out en-mass to vote on February 16 to pull our country from the brink and propel it to greater heights so we can live a better life. Take my words as a covenant with Nigeria”.

Presidency Cries Out: They Are Ganging Up Against Buhari

The Presidency on Sunday again declared that no amount of gang up against President Muhammadu Buhari towards the the Presidential elections will stand.

They said “The Peoples Democratic Party is hiding in the bunker of ethnicity to avoid their inevitable defeat but that won’t change anything.

“The current scenario resembles efforts to stop Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 by the same characters. It is an effort to repeat the old experiment that failed is 2015.

“They failed to stop him from coming to power in 2015 and they will fail yet again on February 16th.

“If all these groups are ganging up against one person, that is President Buhari, it tells you who is the formidable candidate in the election.

“This gang up they forged, one more time will change nothing. It is for the people to decide."

At Last! Emiliano Sala's Missing Plane Found

Wreckage from a plane carrying Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala has been discovered in the English Channel.

The Piper Malibu N264DB was lost on 21 January on its way from Nantes, France, to Cardiff, with the Argentine striker and pilot David Ibbotson on board.

Accident investigators are expected to send a submersible to inspect the wreckage later on Monday.

David Mearns, who led a privately-funded search for the aircraft, said it was located off Guernsey on Sunday.

He said: "All I will say is that there is a substantial amount of wreckage on the seabed."
Speaking on Radio 4's Today programme on Monday morning, Mr Mearns said: "We located the wreckage of the plane on the seabed at a depth of about 63m within the first couple of hours [of searching]."

He said the plane was identified by sonar, before a submersible with cameras was sent underwater and was able to confirm it was the plane.

"They saw the registration number and the biggest surprise is that most of the plane is there," he added.

Mr Mearns's private search has now been stood down and the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) is at the site working to recover the plane. SO SAD!

SERAP Sues Fashola For Not Naming Contractors

Anti-corruption group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, has urged the court to compel the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, to publish the names of contractors who allegedly collected money and disappeared without executing awarded electricity projects.

The suit was filed before the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday.

SERAP’s Senior Legal Adviser, Bamisope Adeyanju, said in a statement on Sunday that the suit followed Fashola’s failure to honour the group’s request for the list of the allegedly defauting contractors.

SERAP had made the demand in January following a claim by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar that some contractors, who were awarded electricity contracts, disappeared after being fully paid for the contracts.

“The money went down the drain. Up till now, we are not holding the contractors responsible. People have collected money upfront 100 per cent and have disappeared; and they have not done any work,” Atiku was quoted to have said during a programme on Channels TV.

SERAP, in the suit marked FHC/L/CS/105/19, sought “an order for leave to apply for judicial review and an order of mandamus directing and/or compelling Mr Fashola to provide specific details about the names and whereabouts of the contractors who collected public funds meant for electricity projects but disappeared with the money without executing any projects.”

Rapper 21 Savage Arrested For Living In US Illegally

Rapper 21 Savage is in custody and at risk of being deported after authorities claimed he is a UK national who has been living in the US illegally.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Bryan Cox says the Grammy-nominated artist – real name Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph – was arrested in a targeted operation early Sunday in the Atlanta area.

Cox says Abraham-Joseph is a British citizen who entered the US legally in July 2005 but overstayed his visa, which expired in July 2006.

According to Cox, Abraham-Joseph was convicted on felony drug charges in Georgia in October 2014.

Abraham-Joseph has been placed in deportation proceedings in federal immigration court, Cox says.

His attorney Dina LaPolt told The Independent in a statement: “We are working diligently to get Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with authorities to clear up any misunderstanding.

Ambode Will No Longer Be Removed – Tinubu

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, on Sunday said that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos would  no longer be removed from office.

Tinubu, who spoke after a peace meeting was brokered by the APC leadership in the state, said the State House of Assembly had agreed to sheathe its sword.

The former governor said the executive and the legislative arms of government in the state had resolved to work together in the interest of the state.

“In the last one week, there was noise about the conflict between the executive and the House of Assembly. It is of great concern to all of us and particularly, what Lagos represents across the country.

“We have been able to look into the source of the various conflicts, which is not uncommon in politics. What is the genesis of those problems? We are one big family and as a big family, you will have some disagreement.

“As leaders of the party, we have looked into that. We have looked into areas where we have to compromise, discuss, build the institutions and encourage them to really do what is right.

“We have resolved that there would be no question of impeachment in Lagos State. Let the two arms of government communicate and continue to respect one another and build consensus and understanding. That is all about politics,” Tinubu said.

The APC leader said that allowing the conflict to fester would have dire consequences not just for the state, but also the entire country.

The Assembly had last Monday threatened to remove Ambode from office for alleged gross misconduct, as regards the 2019 budget.

Female Kidnapper & Male Gang Members Arrested, Victim Rescued

Police Command in Enugu State says it has arrested five suspected notorious kidnappers while rescuing their victim unhurt in a remote hideout.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Sunday in Enugu that the suspected kidnappers were nabbed on February 2.

Amaraizu said that the feat was achieved by police operatives of Nkanu West Division through well coordinated intelligence information on the kidnappers hideout located at Amakatanga axis of Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government area of the state.

The police spokesperson said that the suspects gave their names as Kingsley Nwafor, 23, residing in Aba, Abia State; Chukwu Ebuka, 28, also a resident in Aba; Nelson Morris, 24, from Owerri and Ikechukwu Onwuabueke, 26, residing in Onitsha in Anambra.

The PPRO said that the only female member of the gang was identified as Miriam Oguejiofor, residing in Aba in Abia State.

He said that Oguejiofor had allegedly abducted their victim identified as Anthony Okeke, 46, from St. Michaels Road, Aba.

According to him, Oguejiofor had allegedly lured the victim to Agbani in Enugu State with proposal of a robust deal to be executed in the town.

“It was further gathered that when the victim got to Agbani, the kidnappers surfaced and pretending to be business associates working with Oguejiofor, took him to their hideout located inside a lodge at Amakatanga axis of Agbani.

“It was learnt that the kidnappers initially demanded N10 million ransom from the victim’s relations but later reduced it to N5 million before police operatives, acting on intelligence information, swooped on them in the early hours of Feb. 2.

“The police operatives rescued the victim unhurt without payment of any ransom as well as arrested the suspects,’’ he said.

Amaraizu said that the suspects had been helping the police operatives in their investigation in relation to their alleged nefarious activities.

  • The PPRO advised members of the public to be security conscious when they transact businesses so as not to fall for antics of mischief makers.

Falana Writes To FG: Withdraw The Charges Against CJN

A Lagos lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), has urged the Federal Government to withdraw the criminal charges filed against the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

Falana said he made the request having confirmed that
a petition had been submitted to the National Judicial Council alleging grave misconduct against Onnoghen.

In the February 3 letter addressed to the Attorney-General of Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, Falana urged the minister to advise President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse the suspension because a public officer could not be removed from office on the basis of an ex parte order granted by any court or tribunal in Nigeria.

The letter reads in part, “Since the charge of false declaration of assets was filed against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal by the Code of Conduct Bureau, I have repeatedly requested you to use your good offices to discontinue the case. My request was anchored on the case of Elelu-Habeeb vs the Attorney-General of the Federation & Ors (2012) 40 WRN 1 where the Supreme Court held that by virtue of Section 292 of the Constitution of Nigeria, the head of any of the judicial arm of state and Federal Governments cannot be removed from office without a prior investigation conducted by the National Judicial Council.

“Having confirmed that you have since submitted a petition to the National Judicial Council alleging grave misconduct against the chief justice, I am compelled to request you, once again, to file a nolle prosequi to discontinue the charge pending against his Lordship at the Code of Conduct Tribunal without any further delay.

“The charge should not be allowed to hang like a Sword of Damocles on the head of the Chief Justice while he is being investigated by the National Judicial Council. In view of your implicit confidence in the ability of members of the National Judicial Council to resolve the matter, you ought to accede to the request to terminate the proceedings at the Code of Conduct Tribunal forthwith.”

Falana posited that the withdrawal of the case from the Code of Conduct Tribunal would lead to the immediate vacation of the ex parte order relied upon by the President to justify the illegal suspension of Onnoghen and the appointment of Justice Tanko Mohammad as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

He said, “Even though by virtue of Paragraph 10 (2) (a) of Part 1 of the Fifth Schedule to the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Code of Conduct Tribunal is empowered to order any public officer to vacate office, the power cannot be exercised until such a public officer has been tried and convicted for breaching the provisions of the code of conduct for pubic officers.

But as a public officer cannot be removed from office on the basis of an ex parte order granted by any court or tribunal in Nigeria, we urge you to advise President Buhari to reverse the suspension of the Chief Justice.

“Once the suspension is reversed, Justice Walter Onnoghen will then be prevailed upon to resign as the Chief Justice having lost the moral authority to preside over the affairs of the juridical organ of the government of the Federation.”

He added, “However, if his Lordship does not call it quits or if the National Judicial Council does not recommend his removal from office, you may wish to exercise your powers under Section 174 of the Constitution to prosecute him for failure to declare his assets which is a punishable offence under the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act."

Pastor Adeboye's Prayer, God, Saved My Life - VP Osinbajo

Vice president Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday said God’s mercy and the special prayer of protection that the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, prayed for him last Friday were responsible for his escape in the helicopter crash.

Osinbajo said this on Sunday at a thanksgiving service held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Phase 11, Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

The Vice-President, who escaped unhurt in a helicopter crash on Saturday said, “I was at the Redemption Camp last Friday although I came late, after the vigil, Papa Adeboye called me and asked how the campaign was going and I told him, it was going well. He then prayed for me and specifically said ‘God, you know how dear this my son is to me, please protect him.’

“He said the prayers continuously for more than five times. I believe God must have listened and decided to save my life and those in my entourage.”

Osinbajo said he believed that God and Adeboye’s prayers were responsible for his escape last Saturday. He urged the members of the congregation to believe in the efficacy of prayers.

“Whether or not the devil likes it, we are moving to the next level,” he added.

Osinbajo added that no amount of thanksgiving and praises to God would be enough for saving his life and nine others in Saturday’s helicopter crash.

“Only God can take the glory for saving my life and those of the others on board,” he said.

The Vice-President said it would have been breaking news on local and international media that he and others had died in the crash but God did not allow such to happen.

“No amount of thanksgiving and praises to God would be enough for saving my life and nine others on board. God is the one, who can do all things, and only Him can take the glory; we return the glory to Him.

“We are here to say thank you. Thank you, Jesus. We bless His name forever and ever,” he said.

He prayed God to bless all the people that had celebrated with him in Kogi State, the nation and the world at large.

“All I have to say is that we are grateful and we are moving to the next level; the Lord will uphold us to the next level and Kogi will be number one,” Osinbajo said.

Tinubu Speaks On Ambode: He Will No Longer Be Impeached

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, on Sunday said that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos would no longer be removed from office.

Tinubu, who spoke after a peace meeting was brokered by the APC leadership in the state, said the State House of Assembly had agreed to sheathe its sword.

The former governor said the executive and the legislative arms of government in the state had resolved to work together in the interest of the state.

The APC leader said that allowing the conflict to fester would have dire consequences not just for the state, but also the entire country.

The Assembly had last Monday threatened to remove Ambode from office for alleged gross misconduct, as regards the 2019 budget. They had given the governor seven days to defend himself, failing which, he would be removed.

Some had warned that APC will lose Lagos if Ambode was impeached.

Presidential Election: Afenifere, Ohaneze, Others Endorse Atiku

The electoral chances of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar, received a boost on Sunday as regional leaders and socio-cultural groups from the six regional zones of the country adopted him as their consensus candidate for the February 16 presidential election.

Speaking under the auspices of the Summit of Nigerian Leaders and Elders, with the theme, ‘Elections: The search for credible, free and fair elections,’ the group said Atiku possessed the capability and knowledge to lead the nation.

The associations that expressed their support for the PDP candidate are the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere; the Northern Elders Forum; Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Pan-Niger Delta Forum and the Middle Belt Forum.

Leaders of the associations, including Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, Chief Edwin Clark, Tanko Yakassai and Dr. Bitrus Pogu, asked Nigerians to vote for Atiku on February 16.

Speaking for the Igbo nation, the President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nwodo, said Nigeria was facing a momentous election that would determine the growth trajectory of the country in the next four years.

He stated that President Muhammadu Buhari had widened the ethnic cleavages in the country thus jeopardising national security, citing the banditry in parts of Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and the insurgency in Borno State.

He said, “Though the APC (All Progressives Congress) set up a committee on restructuring chaired by Kaduna State Governor which presented their recommendations, nothing has been heard about it till today.

“There was no bill to the National Assembly to commence the process of restructuring the country. In this order, Atiku, Bukola Saraki, Donald Duke and Kingsley Moghalu presented how they would implement their restructuring agenda. So, Ohanaeze has chosen Atiku Abubakar as its candidate.”

Afenifere leader, Adebanjo, said the summit was only concerned about the unity of the country, arguing that the PDP presidential candidate believed in restructuring the country having written and delivered several papers on it.

“Those of you present here will save Nigeria, so you must do everything in your power to ensure that Atiku wins; a vote for Atiku is a vote for national unity. In Afenifere, we don’t follow people blindly; Atiku believes in restructuring and he has delivered papers on it,” the Yoruba elder noted.

The President of NEF said his association had earlier announced that it would not support any northern politician that failed to perform in office, hence their opposition to Buhari who the body endorsed and worked for in 2015.

Abdullahi said the forum presented a document on governance to the President shortly after he came to power, but the government jettisoned the blueprint.

“Based on our assessment, it is very clear the country requires a new leadership and that is why the Northern Elders Forum agreed that the leader is Atiku Abubakar,” the NEF chairman said.

Ijaw leader, Clark, stated that the Niger Delta, which produced the nation’s wealth, was being neglected, noting that the cost of fuel was higher in the region than in other parts of the country.

“I have watched and seen various political campaigns and I have seen the President Nigeria deserves. I am satisfied by our choice. I join Ohanaeze, Afenifere and the rest of us that Nigeria should have a capable, intelligent President; a President with personality. So, on behalf of the Niger Delta, Atiku is our presidential candidate,” he added.

How We Survived Helicopter Crash With Osinbajo - Top Aide

Babafemi Ojudu, a political adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, on Sunday thanked safety measures and quick response of security personnel for saving himself and 11 others who were in the helicopter that crashed on Saturday.

Mr Ojudu was on the delegation of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo when the accident occurred as their chopper was landing in Kabba, Kogi State.

The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. Messrs Osinbajo and Ojudu escaped unhurt with 10 other persons on the helicopter. The minister of state for labour and productivity, Stephen Ocheni, was also onboard.

Caverton Group, an air charter service which operated the Augusta A139 helicopter, blamed “unusual weather conditions” for the crash in a preliminary statement. Further investigations are expected.

In a Facebook update, Mr Ojudu said he was calm during the accident, although the focus was largely on the vice president’s safety.

“To family, friends and associates thank you all for your concern and show of love and affection. I can’t thank you enough. It was a miracle we survived.

“The belts did a marvelous job and so were the security men on ground who quickly pulled us out of the wreckage not minding their own safety.

“We were also calm all through the ordeal. There was no panic of any kind.

“The immediate concern of all of us was the safety of our principal. We ensured he got out first. He too ensured we were all out before going into a vehicle...

“Above all God must be praised for providing us that umbrella of protection and prevented the helicopter from exploding in flames,” he said.

Mother Sells Own Baby For N200,000 In Niger

Police operatives attached to the Madalla Division in Niger State have arrested two suspects for alleged human trafficking.

The two suspects, Blessing Aluna, 23, of the Rimi Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, and one Oludare Jeprince, 36, of Giri Abuja, were apprehended in the Madalla area of Suleja for abducting a three-year-old child.

It was learnt that Aluna, who resides in the Madalla area of Suleja, had at some point allegedly sold her one-week-old baby for N200,000.

It was learnt that she was nabbed for allegedly conniving with Jeprince, who was said to be her boyfriend and accomplice, to kidnap and facilitate the sale of the three-year-old baby.

Northern City News gathered on Sunday that Aluna had in 2017 sold her week-old baby to one Nkechi Udo, of Tungan Maje, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Further checks revealed that Aluna had assisted one Precious Ade of the Gwagwalada area of Abuja to sell her 15-month-old baby for N250,000.

The suspect reportedly received the sum of N50,000 as her share of the proceeds of the crime.

In an interview with Punch correspondent, Aluna blamed poverty for her involvement in the crime.

She said, “Imagine me selling my child for money; that will tell you the level of hardship in the country.

“I sold my own child for N200,000 in order to open a provision store in Suleja at least to take care of myself and my siblings.”

When asked whether she regretted her action, the suspect said, “I have done the worst thing to humanity and especially to my own child. I don’t think I deserve to be alive, let the law take its course.”

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, confirmed the incident, saying the suspects confessed to have been in the child trafficking business for over two years.

He said the suspects would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations were concluded.
