Nantes Retire No 9 Shirt In Honour Of Emiliano Sala

Nantes have retired their No 9 shirt in honour of former striker Emiliano Sala, whose body was found in the plane wreckage in the English Channel this week.

And in tearful scenes outside the club's Stade de la Beaujoire on Friday morning a 'keep hope' banner was removed in front of the floral tribute.

On Wednesday, it emerged an unidentified body - now known to be Sala - was brought off ship, Geo Ocean III, on a stretcher and transferred to a private ambulance before being taken to Dorset Police and the local coroner.

The plane was flying from Nantes, France, the home of Sala's former team, to Cardiff on January 21, when it crashed into the sea with the new £15million signing and pilot David Ibbotson inside.

The French club released a heartfelt statement on Friday, confirming the decision to retire the shirt.

'FC Nantes had the immense sadness on Thursday to learn that the body found was that of Emiliano Sala. This news puts an end to interminable and unbearable waiting. Emiliano will forever be on the legends who has written the great history of FC Nantes.

'There are difficult mornings, nightmarish awakenings, where unhappily relity hits us. Emis is gone...

'Emiliano Sala arrived on the backs of the Edre in July 2015 and knew how to win the hearts of the Nantes supporters.

'With his work, his desire and his kindness without limits, he finished as the club's top scorer in his three seasons.

'The homages paid to him nationally and internationally match the player and personal that he was.

'Today, we have lost a friend, a talented player and an exemplaray team-mate.

'We can't forget in this drama the pilot and his family and have confidence that the authorities will continue their search.'

Waldemar Kita, president of Nantes said: 'I don't have the words. It's a tragedy, I'm crushed. Emiliano left his mark. That's why, like many fans, I wish to honour him by retiring the No 9.

'Nantes, its board, its staff and its players, wish to pass the families of Emiliano Sala and David Ibbotson their deepest condolences. We will never forget you, Emi.

'He's an Argentine who never gives up, Emiliano Sala, Emiliano Sala...'

Return Our Money Or Risk Legal Action, ACPN Tells Oby Ezekwesili

The Allied Congress Party of Nigeria on Thursday demanded that its former presidential candidate, Oby Ezekwesili, return all the money generated during her short stay in the party or risk legal action.

The national Chairman of the party, Alhaji Ganiyu Galadima, said the party rejected the defence made by Ezekwesili, who had accused the leadership of greed and desperation for money.

At a press conference in Abuja, Galadima told the former education minister that a political party was different from a charity organisation or the #BringBackOurGirls movement.

He said, “So, we wanted to know all the contents of the accounts and see the accounts because at the end of the day, it is not the presidential candidate that the Independent National Electoral Commission will hold responsible, but the party, and whatever any candidate generated for his or her campaign belongs to the party.

“We are expecting that she will respond at the appropriate time but if she doesn’t, we may be compelled to go to court.”

Galadima claimed that from all indications, Ezekwesili did not have capacity to contest a presidential election.

He said, “For somebody who wants to contest for the presidency, all you could generate for period of three months was just N43m and she spent everything. She did not disclose the sources of the fund and how much she generated.

Brazilian Politician Sparks Outrage By Wearing Daring Red Jumpsuit For Her Swearing-In Ceremony

A newly-elected Brazilian state representative who stirred controversy by wearing a revealing red jumpsuit to her oath of office ceremony has hit back at her critics.

Ana Paula da Silva, 43, struck a nerves when she was sworn-in on February 1 in an outfit that accentuated her breasts, causing furor in Brazil.

The controversy started when the lawmaker from the southern state of Santa Catarina wore a tight, red jumpsuit that showed deep cleavage.

She fired back at her detractors in an interview with Brazilian network NSC TV.

'I thought people were going to talk about [the] red [outfit], but they just focused on cleavage. Women have breasts and I have big breasts,' da Silva said.

'I've always been like that. It's not now that I have become [a representative] that I will become another woman. I'm not there to be evaluated for that. The way I dress is my problem.'

Breasts of discord,' read a sarcastic headline Thursday in a column by Mariliz Pereira Jorge from leading daily Folha de S. Paulo.

The Santa Catarina State Representative's Facebook and Instagram accounts were bombarded with messages taking her to task for her choice of clothing in a deeply conservative country also known for skimpy swim suits and round-the-clock partying during Carnival.

A ceremony photo was shared on her Instagram account, deputadapaulinha, and it has drawn over 13,700 likes and more than 3,000 comments, some which were too vulgar.

The lawmaker's opponents, including many women, said that her choice of clothing was 'inappropriate,' ''shocking' and 'vulgar.'
Her staff worked quickly to delete some outrageous messages that called for da Silva to be raped.

'A little modesty … does not leave anyone sick and does not hurt anyone,’ a Facebook user under the name of Caritas Cristiana wrote. ‘Dressing with dignity is a sign of virtue. You’re a public woman.’

'This macho and prejudiced world you live in is not mine,' she wrote in response to a man who asked how her cleavage contributed to democracy.

'I've seen a lot of men in suits and ties taking money out of the health sector, school meals. That's unacceptable.'

Others said clothes shouldn't matter and asked that politicians focus on more pressing issues.

Big Issues That Will Determine Nigeria's Next President

A careful observation of the major issues in the ongoing campaigns reveals that while the ruling All Progressives Congress leaders are urging Nigerians to reject the Peoples Democratic Party at the polls because of the party leaders alleged corrupt tendencies, the PDP is also drawing the attention of the electorate to the failure of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to deliver on its promises, after nearly four years in power.

However, political analysts have noted that beyond the issues being raised by the politicians at their campaigns, there are other critical issues that will determine who will win the presidential election.

Some of the critical issues they identified are
the growing poverty across the country, the escalating insecurity in parts of the country, arbitrary use of state powers by the ruling party, desperate activities of greedy politicians and fear of prosecution by corrupt leaders.

Among other remote factors that have started manifesting in the build-up to the election is the interest being shown by the foreign countries that are now threatening visa ban on any individuals fingered in the manipulation of electoral process.

A former Minister of Information who is also a major player in the current political process in the country, Prof Jerry Gana, in an interview with The Punch in January, identified character, competence, courage and efficiency as issues that would determine the winner.

He said, “These issues will determine who becomes Nigeria’s next President. Added to that is the issue of younger generation; there are about 40 million young people. They won’t be looking at parties but the quality of the individuals. If the elections are based on voting, as it should be, the outcome will surprise you.”

Apart from character and competence on the part of the candidates, the foreign influence would also be a major consideration in the election.

The Secretary-General of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba organisation, Chief Seinde Arogbofa, told our correspondent that the issue of restructuring remained a major factor that would determine who becomes the next President of the country.

He said, “If the country is not restructured, its problem would persist and the citizens would continue to suffer. Nigerians are tired of the current problems and crises. They want a leader that will do the proper things that would end the mess.”

Keen watchers of the nation’s polity have called for a third force, arguing that the electorate, who are now politically enlightened, have lost confidence in both the APC and the PDP because both parties have no clear ideology.

A major player in the third force arrangement, Dr Thomas-Wilson Ikubese, who is a former presidential aspirant and convener of ‘YesWeFit Revolutionary Movement’, in an interview with our correspondent, however shed more light on why the plan collapsed.

He said, “Nigerians are tired of seeing the same old recycled faces, being repackaged and relabelled each time elections draw near. They truly desire to see a set of new breeds take over governance and redeem the country from our present predicament.

“Unfortunately, ego and selfishness made some of us drop off the table. Even some of us who followed through to the end pulled out and started crying ‘foul’ when the process didn’t favour them and produced Fela Durotoye.”

But in his own contribution, a former federal lawmaker and legal practitioner, Dr Ehiogie West-Idahosa, identified poverty, insecurity, and the interferences of government agencies in the electoral process, as issues that would determine where the pendulum will swing in the February 16 presidential poll.

He said, “Top on the list would be the pervasive poverty that the country is faced with. The uncommon insecurity situation in Nigeria is another factor that is evident.

“Above all these, the presidential election would be largely determined by the possible meddlesomeness of government institutions and agencies in the electoral process. If they interfere partially as many fear, then the likelihood of any real election taking place would be minimal.”

Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Okitipupa/Irele Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Mike Omogbehin, told our correspondent that the presidential candidate with the most committed foot soldiers across the country would win the presidential election.

Omogbehin said, “It is a known fact that Nigerians are complaining about the two main political parties but whether we like it or not, the electorate would still queue behind them on election day.

“As for me, the presidential candidate with the most committed and reliable local leaders would win at the end of the day. Politics is local. The electorate doesn’t know Buhari or Atiku. They only know their local leaders and they will do according to his directives.”

The General Overseer of the New Life Evangelical Mission in Lagos, Pastor Samson Emmanuel, said the roles of religious leaders would also be a major issue in determining the next President of Nigeria because they have considerable influence on their large followership.

“I don’t really know why this is so but I believe that politics has crept into our religious organisations and Nigerians would definitely vote along religious lines despite the fact that the two main candidates are Muslims,” he said.

The leader of the South-East caucus in the National Assembly, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, said that the use of security and military personnel to intimidate voters on the day of election could be a major factor that would influence the outcome of the presidential poll.

The presidential candidate of Mass Action Joint Alliance, Prof Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, told The Punch that issues that would determine Nigeria’s next President are power of incumbency, quality of candidates, preparations, people and prospects, and the readiness and influence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Others, according to her, are geopolitical zone factor, intra party politics, major party players, the third force, number of candidates, state of economy (recession), state of security, social issues, religious factor, corruption, failure of ruling party, the coalition of united political parties, fundraising, the gender card, and most importantly but, but not the least is the God factor.

SARS Nab Dismissed Soldier Involved In Kidnapping, Armed Robbery

Operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad of the Imo State Police Command have arrested a dismissed soldier, Sampson David, for an alleged involvement in kidnapping and armed robbery.

Parading the suspect alongside others, on Wednesday, the state Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, said that one English pump-action gun and two pairs of military uniform were recovered as exhibits from David.

The CP said, “On December 5, 2018, SARS operatives arrested one Amarachi Ihejirika of Umugama, Owu-Amakohia in the Ikeduru Local Government Area, Imo State, in connection with unlawful possession of firearm and impersonation.

“She confessed that the gun and military uniform belonged to her fiancée, who claimed to be a soldier.

“The said Sampson David, who has been terrorising Owerri and its environs through kidnapping and armed robbery, was arrested by our gallant officers.”

Galadanchi added that upon interrogation, the dismissed soldier confessed that he stole the gun from the Nigerian Legion’s office in Abia State.

According to the CP, the command will arraign the suspect in court at the conclusion of investigation.

While commending the SARS Commander, Victor Geoffrey, and his team, Galadanchi said the command was ready to deal with issues of violence as the general elections approach.

I Was A Billionaire Before I Became Governor - Gov. Ortom 'Exposes' Senator Akume

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has said he is in government not to enrich himself, saying, he was already a billionaire before he became a governor to serve the people of his state.

Ortom, who spoke with journalists, was reacting to his estranged godfather, Senator George Akume’s allegation at the Buhari’s presidential campaign rally held at Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi on Wednesday.

Senator Akume had accused Ortom of using his office to enrich himself.

Akume had said, “Today, there is one governor in the North-Central Nigeria, (a veiled reference to Ortom) who is richer than Buhari and has more money than Buhari in just three-and-a-half years of being a governor.

“The most notorious problem facing Benue today is the use of livestock guards. These people have been killing Benue people because they were armed with Ak47.

“Just on Friday, we were on governorship campaign to the Guma LGA and these guards ambushed our campaign train, shot and killed one person.”

But in his reaction, Ortom lambasted the Akume, stating that the senator ought to be in prison for allegedly stealing N2bn when he was exiting Government House in 2007.

Ortom said, “The truth of the matter is that Akume cannot hold me responsible for not being able to provide jobs; I was a billionaire before I became governor.

“Before I became a minister, I had to resign my position as the chairman of my company and the company is doing fine. I borrowed money from Nexim Bank, Bank of Industry and CBN.

“I discovered a window, through the present minister of agriculture that there was fund available for agricultural development programme. This I introduced to Akume that with all his asset around, he could obtain N5bn loan and invest in business. But he told me he did not have capacity to run business, so can he blame me for that?

Akume was a governor for eight years and he stole N2bn before he left office; up till now, the case is with the EFCC but because he is in the APC, nothing is happening of the case.

“That’s the reason why I said the EFCC was a tool of the APC, if not, Akume is supposed to be in jail now.”

Rich Estate Developer Lured & Killed By Bad Guys

Some unknown men have killed an estate developer, Bababunmi Akinyemi, in the Mowe area of the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The victim was allegedly lured to his site at Peace Estate, opposite the Redemption Camp off the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where he was killed and his body dumped in the bush by the assailants.

It was learnt that the incident happened on Friday, February 1, 2019.

The wife of the victim, Omotoke Akinyemi, told The Punch that her husband was called by one of the residents of the estate, whom he (Bababunmi) had informed of his intention to sell the property at Mowe.

She added that the resident called that he had found a buyer for the property and Bababunmi went to meet the supposed buyer in Mowe but did not return home and calls put across to his telephone numbers did not go through.

The mother of three added that the family reported a case of a missing person at the Warewa Police Station before their attention was drawn to a decaying corpse on the property, adding that bruises were found on the deceased’s forehead, indicating that he was hit on the head.

Omotoke stated, “We left home together on Friday, February 1, 2019, for his office at Omole area of Lagos State, but he left me there saying that he wanted to get to Ikeja; and from Ikeja, he went home.

"He called me that he wanted to go to Ikoyi for a meeting, but that our neighbour at Mowe called him that he got an interested buyer for our property at Mowe and that he wanted to go there.

“I asked him if he was going to drive; he said he won’t because of the traffic and that was the last conversation we had. I was expecting him to come back, but when we didn’t see him that day, we went to the site in Mowe very early on Saturday morning. We asked the people around but they said they did not see him.

“We didn’t meet the neighbour who called him, but we met his wife, who told us that her husband had travelled. We asked one of the ‘Omo oniles’, who was always at the gate of the estate, and he said he didn’t see my husband.

“We thought it was a case of a missing person and we reported at the Warewa Police Station, and on Tuesday, his corpse was found in the last room of the building covered with bush.”

It was learnt that the resident, who called the deceased and one of the ‘Omo oniles’ in the area had been arrested by operatives of the Warewa Police Station.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, told The Punch that the two suspects had been transferred to the state Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

He said, “The family reported a case of a missing person at the Warewa Police Station; the corpse was later discovered on his site where it was dumped. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the case and we are still investigating it.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the state Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, and the homicide section has taken over the case. An object was used to hit him on the head, but we have not established what the object is.”

Tinubu's Ex-CSO's Posting To Kwara: New IGP Reacts

The acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, says the posting of Mr Kayode Egbetokun, a former chief security officer to the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, to Kwara State as Commissioner of Police has no political undertone.

IGP Adamu stated this at a one-day summit organised by the Vanguard for Transparent Leadership and Democracy in Abuja on Thursday.

The acting IG, who was represented at the event by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mogaji Ismaila of the FCT Police Command, said the outcry that greeted the posting of Egbetokun was unnecessary because the exercise had no political undertone.

He said, “May I appeal to the journalists and the politicians not to drag us into political issues. Posting of commissioners of police is purely the responsibility of the IG in conjunction with the Police Service Commission.

“This recent posting came as a result of the retirement of some commissioners of police and the elevation of some CPs to the rank of assistant inspectors-general of police, and even to the position of deputy inspectors-general of police.

“You don’t expect the IG to leave states whose commissioners of police were promoted to AIGs and DIGs vacant. Definitely, there is going to be movement and as far as we are concerned, the IGP used experience, competence and other qualities in posting those police officers to the affected states.

“The postings by the IGP have no political undertone and he has no ulterior motive in carrying out the exercise. He carried out the exercise purely for effective service delivery.

“On the issue of a former CSO to a former governor, the man carried out that task as a junior officer. Now that he has risen to the position of CP, are you saying that he should not be posted?

“The IG is free to post him to any state where he feels he could deliver. His posting is based on his track records, devoid of any political undertone and the criticisms about it are unnecessary.”

The acting IG promised that the police would play a neutral role throughout the electoral process.

R*pe & Recording Of A Lady By Lagos Big Boy's Son: Updates

The social media went agog on Thursday with accusation that the police had freed two suspects, Don-Chima George, 25, and his friend, Razak Oke, 28, who allegedly drugged and r*ped a lady they took to the club.

The accusation, which was initiated by a Twitter user has led to outrage by Nigerians on different social media platforms.

@KingNelo2 had tweeted, “I honestly cannot believe the audacity of Nigeria and money. So 1) Don-Chima George and Ricco were released scot-free for r*pe. 2) Don-Chima’s father then got the police to arrest the victim’s brother, sister and friend. As in, right now her brother is in jail. I am furious.

“This is Nigeria where anyone can get away with r*pe. How dare you, Don-Chima George? You and your father think you are above the law? On top of the trauma you have inflicted on this girl, you now want to use other ways to punish her? You and your father won’t get away with it.

“And the Nigeria police deleted the f**king video. They deleted the video so that these rapist animals can get away with it. Don-Chima, you know your father can’t protect you forever. You are done on these streets.”

However, the Lagos State Police Command has refuted the claims, stating that the suspects had been remanded in prison custody.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said in a statement that the duo were lawfully arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction and at no point were they granted bail by the police or the court.

He said, “The attention of the Lagos State Police Command has been drawn to the news making the rounds on the social media... that the son of the owner of Dellankester Hotels and Suites, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, one Don-Chima George, 25, and his friend, Razak Oke, 28, who were accused of r*ping their female friend after drugging her, have been set free, because the police collected bribes from their parents.

“The Lagos State Police Command hereby states that the accused persons were arraigned before the Family Court 3, Ogba Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, for the offence of conspiracy and s*xual assault by penetration to wit; r*pe.

“That after the charge was read to the accused persons, the honourable court remanded them in prison custody pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and the case was adjourned till March 7, 2019;

“That the accused persons will be produced in court on March 7, 2019, and that the accused persons are currently at the Kirikiri Prison.”

Oti advised members of the public to be wary of fake and unsubstantiated news on the social media.
