Actor Albert Finney has died at the age of 82 with his wife and son by his side sparking an outpouring of grief over the loss of one of British cinema's 'true greats'.
The star, who played Ebenezer Scrooge, Sir Winston Churchill and 'Daddy' Warbucks in Annie in a long and extraordinary career, died after a short illness.
Finney, who beat kidney cancer in 2011, had spent the past month in Britain's top cancer hospital - the Royal Marsden in London - before succumbing to a chest infection yesterday.
A statement from a family spokesman said: 'He passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side.'
Young Femi Branch gained admission to the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, to study Religious Studies. However, what his father had in mind was for his son to become a lawyer.
In fact, his father loved the law profession that he went back to school to bag a diploma degree in the course. So he was so disappointed when his son suddenly decided to become an actor; a profession that was not popular at the time.
While talking with Saturday Beats, the actor said that his father almost disowned him because of his career choice. “It was a serious matter for me at home when I decided to study theatre arts because my father always wanted a lawyer. It was so bad that he had to go back to the University of Ibadan to take a diploma course in law; he really wanted one of his children to become a lawyer but I could not have been bothered.
“For him, it was a disappointment and he almost did not contact me for about two years. Our fight was settled when I did a commercial for MTN. I was not in Lagos and we had not spoken for a long time before that and out of the blue, I got a call from my dad; he was asking me how I was doing. He said that he saw the advertisement and congratulated me on it.
“I called my mother later and she was the one that told me that one of my father’s friends had seen the billboard and called his attention to it. He went there to check. It was not easy but I am thankful for the fact that they were later glad that I took the decision that I did,” he said.
Veteran actor, Tajudeen Oyewole, popularly known as Abija, became famous in the Nigerian movie industry in the 80s and early 90s for his roles as herbalist in movies.
However, fast forward to the present day and it seems the once vibrant actor’s name has been consigned to oblivion as he has not been as visible on the television screen as he used to be.
In a chat with Saturday Beats, he said some people used to think he was an herbalist because of the roles he played in movies.
“People often ask if I am an herbalist in real life because of my routine roles in movies, even though I have a background in Ifa divination, I am not an herbalist.
People in my neighbourhood would call me Abija; they used to be scared of me in real life but I always told them I was not a diabolical and that it was just acting. My roles as Abija were my best performances; interestingly, I can handle any role in the movie industry.
“When I don’t dress in my attire as Abija, some people don’t recognise me. It still pains me that I didn’t further my education; at this age even though I want to go back to school, it is too late because I have to cater for my wife and children. It was quite difficult for my parents to accept my choice of career; they felt it was only stubborn people that used to act in movies. They were only convinced when I started becoming famous.
“I am happy about the positive developments in the movie industry; things have really improved compared to when I started. The youngsters in the entertainment industry have really helped in making the industry bright,” he said.
Cash strapped university students are being paid as much as £3,500 to be infected with dangerous tropical diseases including typhoid, malaria and pneumonia.
The UK students are among a growing number of healthy volunteers being paid to be infected with exotic bacteria and viruses for scientific research at institutions including Oxford University and Imperial College London.
The UK is a world leader in the study of infectious diseases and the experiments - known as “challenge trials” where human guinea pigs, mainly students, are “challenged” with an infectious disease - have become a popular way to progress the development of new vaccines at a fraction of the cost of field studies.
With the risk of a global pandemic growing, experts say a better understanding of infectious illnesses and how to combat them is urgently needed.
Matthew Speight, a 27-year-old zoology student at Oxford University, earned almost £6,000 in two typhoid challenge trials organised by the Oxford Vaccine Group in 2016 and 2017. Undeterred, this week he is taking part in another trial in which he could contract malaria.
“I am a PhD student, the income I get is significantly below the minimum wage, so the financial incentive is strong,” he told The Telegraph. “The trials pay quite well and Oxford is very expensive. I used the money for my rent.”
Struggling student? | Pick your infection
Disease Pay range
Typhoid £2,500-£3,000
Malaria £1,700-£3,000
Pneumococcal bacterial infection £200-£600
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) £2,500-£3,000
Meningococcal meningitis £300-£3,500
Not all participants become ill but in both the typhoid trials Mr Speight took part in he contracted the disease. He described the experience as “the worst of my life”.
“You swallow a cup of bacteria”, said Mr Speight. “[There was] a bit of trepidation, but also a resolve. I thought, I’m here, so bring it on.”
Despite having had a trial vaccine two weeks ahead of time, the student contracted the disease. “Three or four days later I had this crazy fever. It was the height of summer, during the 2016 heatwave. My body and joints ached, I had a strong headache, and I was profusely sweating - I remember the bed being soaked, I had a lot of laundry to do that week. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.”
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday slammed the Peoples Democratic Party leaders for allegedly looting the treasury for 16 years, saying “only God can give them punishment”.
Buhari spoke at the State House, Abuja, when he received the leaders of 1,000 support groups.
He said, “Large scale abuse of trust, only God can give them punishment but those we can touch, we will get them prosecuted.
“We have said the properties confiscated should be sold and put the money into the treasury and we will use.”
The President repeated a story on how he met with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Mr Godwin Emefiele) on assumption of office in 2015 and he was informed that there was no money left in the treasury.
Buhari said, “I have said this for the umpteenth time and I have challenged them to prove me wrong, but in the 16 years the PDP ruled, Nigeria was getting 2.1 million times 100 (2.1 million barrels by $100 per barrel) every day, every week, but when we came on board, the price fell to between $37-$38 and hung around $40-$50.
“I went to the CBN Governor and asked him for money, and he said there was no money.”
Residents of Bedi community in Bauchi are still battling to recover from shocks over the tragic death of 42-year-old woman in Bauchi, Hassana Muhammadu, who cut her stomach with a sharp razor due to intense labour pains.
Hassana, an indigene of Bedi village in Ganjuwa local government was married to Mallam Muhammadu Maikudi, a trader and the union was blessed with seven children.
Sources in the village say that Hassana was previously married to another man who she had two children before she remarried Mallam Muhammadu.
The unfortunate incident, which threw the residents of the community into shock, happened on the 27th of January 2019, around 8pm. On that fateful day, there was no inkling that the deceased who served her husband and his friend food earlier in the afternoon will decide to resort to cutting her stomach open because she was suffering from labour pains.
Her husband, who narrated to Daily Independent how the incident happened, said that he was still in shock and could not believe that his wife could go to the extent of taking her own life.
“I got a call from a neighbour that my wife wanted me to come home because she was not feeling well. When I got home, I met her in intense labour pains, so I decided to call a traditional birth attendant who can assist her with the labour, but my wife insisted that I should call her junior sister who lives nearby to attend to her.
“So I went to look for her junior sister who followed me to the house. On getting inside the room, her sister shouted and called me to come to the room. When I got into the room, I saw my wife in a pool of blood with her stomach ripped open as result of a sharp razor blade with which she used to cut her stomach open because she was in pains.
"I then sought the help of the village head who later came to my house with some of his subjects. The village head then arranged for a vehicle that will convey my wife to a nearby hospital, but we later changed our minds and took her to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Hospital, Bauchi because the case was an emergency one and the hospital had experienced doctors who could attend quickly to her case. Unfortunately for me, on getting to the hospital, my wife gave up the ghost. We have buried her according to Islamic rites."
He expressed sadness over the incident, saying that his wife had been suffering from mental disorders which made her to always isolate herself from people.
According to a source, Hassana does not associate with other women and always kept to herself.
“She is always keeping to herself and does not mingle with people. Sometimes, you just see her talking to herself or doing things abnormally. We did not know that this will be the height of this mental problem she has been suffering from,” the source said
The village head of Bedi community, Muhammad Idris, expressed grief over the incident, saying that such a thing has never occurred in the history of the community.
South-west farmers under the auspices of the Agbekoya Farmers’ Society have endorsed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the February 16 presidential election.
On why they endorse Atiku and not Buhari, the group in a statement said they expressed their interest in an Atiku presidency “as a result of his developmental policies especially the issue of restructuring which they said will allow every zone of the country to develop at its own pace”.
Agbekoya disclosed this on Friday after a meeting with the Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council (South), Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
The statement read: “the hardship facing the farmers are enormous and these can only be surmounted if there is a responsive government who will be alive to the yearnings of the people especially the farmers whose contributions to a nation’s well being is not negotiable.
“The Buhari led administration has been the worst period for Farmers across the Southern and Middle Belt of Nigeria. Forget all they are saying about making gains with the Agricultural sector, the present administration supervised an assault on us with the Herdsmen attacks. While we were crying, the government looked the other way.
“We have read Atiku’s plan on tackling this disease and we are satisfied with it. We also read his plan on restructuring and once he implements that, the fortune of this country will skyrocket.”

Fulani Youths Association of Nigeria (Jonde Jam) has promised to deliver 11 million of their votes to President Muhammadu Buhari on February 16 presidential polls.
They made the promise in Abuja when their national executive committee paid a visit to the national headquarters of the APC Women and Youth Presidential Campaign team headed by wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari.
They were received by the national leaders of the campaign team led by the Chairman of the Central Working Committee of the campaign team, Gen. Buba Marwa.
While justifying their support for Buhari, national president of Jonde Jam, Alhaji Maikano Abdullahi, said their decision to back the president for a second term was based on his antecedents and integrity.
“We realise that two Fulanis are running in the presidential election but in our deliberations, we found President Buhari to be the more suitable and qualified. He is a leader with no foreign account; he has been governor and oil minister but has never stolen a kobo from the public treasury. We see him as a talakawa like us and this is why we zeroed in on him as our candidate,” he stated.
The Fulani youth group said its members assembled in Abuja from across the country and would be going back to their General Assembly where they would share kolanut as a seal on their decision to deliver 11 million votes as their bloc support for Buhari.
In his response, Marwa expressed appreciation for their support and urged them to go ahead and mobilise more than the 11million votes they had promised. He said it was only when they do that that the Nigeria of their dream would be realised by the Buhari presidency.

WHAT A LIFE, WHERE THE GOOD TREES DOES NOT STAY LONG IN THE FOREST?
It is HARD to accept the death of a loved one; especially when you didn't have the chance to say goodbye; especially when the deceased was taken so suddenly and so shockingly at the prime of life and most especially when it seems like an irreplaceable part of your world is gone. The grief and the pain can be unbearable; you cry a river and your sorrow knows no end. You never really know what it's like until you are there yourself, but you look to God because he's the only one who can comfort you.
Death and indeed a death so sudden and painful like the death of my dear friend yester-night makes me realize the brevity of life. We often take life for granted; too much so. Her death has made me sit down and reflect. . It's made me put things in perspective. I want to live life and love it, I don't want to spend my life being unhappy or dissatisfied, I want to put a smile on my face because that's what can make a dark day seem bright and I want to play the game of life to the very end.
Ikimot is gone ; None of us can bring her back, no matter how we cry, she is gone.
I met her during my senior secondary school days and we became friends.... I miss disturbing you, you proved to be a good buddy all through... After school we moved on with our various life but you still stood as a friend Ikimot but Today I got the news that you left this sinful world...
I got the news online about the arrival of the new soul (04/02/2019) but I wanted to wish you by calling or a surprise visit, the second day(05/02/2019) was your birthday, I was busy that I could not wish you. I planned to get your number from a friend today to wish you but I got the shocking news i never expected that you have left the world yesterday(06/02/2019)... How can that happen ?
Where is my Portable friend, that friend that whats she loves doing most is to smile. She is calm, loving, patient and friendly.. We all find it hard to believe but the truth is that Quadri Ikimot Damilola has gone to rest. All we can do is to pray for her….
So for those of you who can identify with me in grief, make it your aim to try and look past it and move on but the memory will exist forever
Death is a graduation. When we're taught all the things we came to teach, learned all the things we came to learn, then we're allowed to graduate. What a painful exit
Oremi please rest in peace but make sure you protect your kid that you left for us.(AMEN)
MY CONDOLENCE TO THE QUADRi'S & SANNI'S
