Court Bars FG From Freezing Onnoghen’s Accounts

The  Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the President,  Attorney General of the Federation and Nigerian Financial Intelligence from freezing the bank accounts of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu granted the order while ruling on a motion ex parte instituted by the Legal Defence and Assistance Project Ltd/GTE.

The AGF  last month wrote a letter to the NFIU asking the unit to “restrict normal banking operations on certain accounts belonging to Onnoghen”.

The AGF said the order was in line with Executive Order 06 on the preservation of assets connected with corruption.

On February 8, 2019, however, Justice Ojukwu ruled that the AGF must obtain a court order before freezing the accounts.
The court ruled, “That the AGF shall obtain an order of court (ex parte) before freezing the accounts of Justice Onnoghen Walter Nkanu Samuel (in respect of exhibit 8) in compliance with the law if it was not obtained.

“That where it is shown that the order of court was obtained before the freezing of the accounts contained in Exhibit B, the freezing order shall remain valid.”

The court ordered that the order be served on the respondents pending the hearing of the motion notice.

The court adjourned the matter till February 13.

Bill Clinton Cancels Visit To Nigeria

The former United States President, Bill Clinton, has canceled his trip to Nigeria ahead of Saturday’s general election, saying the visit could be misinterpreted politically.

Clinton and Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Baroness Patricia Scotland, had been named dignitaries for the goodwill messages at the signing of a National Peace Accord scheduled to take place at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, tomorrow, February 13.

The former US president had called off his own participation, citing fear that his presence might be politicised.

Pictured: EFCC Arraigns Woman For N21m Job Scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on February 11, 2019 arraigned one Lilian Bisi Kadiri before Justice Adebukola Banjoko of a Federal Capital Territory, FCT High Court, Maitama, on a one-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretense.

Lilian was alleged to have at various times collected a total sum of N21,450,000 from her victim in the guise that she was going to help secure jobs.

She, however, failed to help secure any jobs, and did not refund the money collected.

The count reads in part: “That you, Lilian Bisi Kadiri, between May 2014 and March 2015 within the Abuja judicial division of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory obtained the sum of N21,450,000 from one Christopher Aneke, which was paid into your Skye bank account under the false pretense that you are capable of securing employment for his relatives, which pretense you knew to be false, and you hereby committed an offence contrary to Section(1)(a)of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act (2006) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act 2006.”

She pleaded “not guilty” to the charge. In view of her plea, prosecuting counsel, Yetunde Alabi, prayed the court to remand the defendant in prison and to fix a date for the commencement of trial.

Justice Banjoko, thereafter, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20 million and two sureties in like sum.

The sureties must be resident in Abuja with landed properties, and must show proof of employment in Abuja and three years tax clearance. The case has been adjourned to March 25, 2019 for trial, and the defendant remanded in Kuje Prison pending fulfilment of the bail conditions.

Man Divorces Wife For Embracing Christianity

A Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, on Monday, dissolved a 31-year-old marriage between one Azeez Muritala and Ramota over religious differences.

NAN reports that Azeez, a truck driver, in his petition, said that he wanted the court to put an end to the union with his wife on the ground that she was not ready to practice Islamic religion with him.

“My lord, I have decided to call it quit with Ramota because I have exhausted my patience with her for too long.

“I got married to Ramota in 1988 so that she could practice the same faith with me.

“Right now, I no longer know anything about her movement as she now became stone-hearted.

“Without my knowledge or approval, Ramota started going to church and bringing home certain kind of water.

“In fact, to my disgust, Ramota brings into my matrimonial home different colours of candle under the disguise of praying with them.

“By this time, she had stopped practising Islam.

“Worst still, Ramota has succeeded in turning our four children against me by poisoning their mind that I am bad.

“Most of the times, she doesn’t stay at home for three days and has recently moved away for long.

“Ramota has even absconded with the first three children without giving me any clue of their whereabouts.

“Just few days ago, she stubbornly came to take away the last child that has been keeping me happy.

“When I can no longer bear the humiliation, I reported to her parents and relatives, but they pleaded with me that she would change,” Azeez said.

The respondent, who consented to the suit, could not deny any of the allegations levelled against her.

Responding, Ramota, a food vendor at Gingede area of Ibadan however, maintained that she had seen practical manifestation of prayer in her life.

“It is true that I now go to church and my husband approved of it.

“When Azeez later told me to stop going to church, I disagreed with him because I needed prayers.

“I did not abscond with any of the children, they wilfully followed me.

“I want to urge this honourable court not to award Azeez custody of the children because he is too busy, they will suffer,” Ramota said.

However, ruling on the matter, the president of the court Chief Ademola Odunade, held that he dissolved the relationship because the duo had refused to be pacified.

Odunade awarded custody of the four children produced by the union, whose ages ranged between 11 and 30, to Azeez because they were grown ups.

Liam Payne & Naomi Campbell Leave Baftas Party 20mins Apart After Row Over Being Seen Together

Besotted Liam Payne and Naomi Campbell left a posh Baftas party within 20 minutes of each other as they appeared to have kissed and made up despite having their first bust-up.

The Sun exclusively revealed the couple clashed for the first time as Naomi wanted to avoid the former One Direction singer at the ceremony over the weekend and he wasn't happy about it.

However it seems the pair have managed to resolve their issues, as they both arrived at Vogue and Tiffany & Co Fashion and Film Party at Annabel’s in Mayfair.

Despite arriving at the venue separately, Naomi and Liam did little to detract attention away from their surprising romance.

Supermodel Naomi looked as sensational as ever in a white sheer gown which featured a feathered skirt.

With a matching white jacket draped around her shoulders, the star gave on-lookers a glimpse at her model physique before heading inside where she posed for pictures with actor Eddie Redmayne.

Soon after, former One Direction singer Liam arrived, looking dapper in a grey suit and open-necked white shirt.

The outing comes despite claims Naomi does not want to be seen in public with her younger beau.

Sources said the supermodel wants to avoid the “drama” of being seen out with Liam.
