Suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday attacked the convoy of Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, who were on their way to a political rally at Gamboru-Ngala.
According to Daily Trust, witnesses’ reports said many were feared dead, just as dozens were missing.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Walter Onnoghen, the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The arrest warrant was issued on a motion filed by the prosecution counsel, after Onnoghen failed to show up in court on Wednesday.
Onnoghen is standing trial before the CCT over allegations of fraudulent declaration of assets.
The CCT has also ruled that Onnoghen be arraigned physically for trial on Friday.
A directive was also issued to the Department of State Services (DSS) to effect the arrest of the suspended CJN.
The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has released a preliminary report of an investigation into the helicopter crash involving Agusta Westland W 139 Caverton Helicopters which flew Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to Kabba in Kogi State.
In the report released on Wednesday, the AIB said the crew lost visual contact with the ground at about 50 feet owing to a brownout – (dust generated when landing on a sandy area) – that enveloped the helicopter.
According to the agency, the helicopter experienced a hard landing and consequently rolled over.
While the AIB says the investigation into the crash is still ongoing, the Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Akin Olateru, gave two safety recommendations to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the operator, Caverton Helicopters Limited.
Olateru asked the NCAA to issue an advisory circular to helicopter operators on the effects of brown out and how to mitigate its effects.
Secondly, he asked Caverton Helicopters to carry out proper risk analysis and assessment before operating flights into unapproved landing pad.
The chopper carrying the Vice President, his entourage and three crew members, had crash-landed at the Kaaba Stadium on February 2.

The main opposition party, PDP, has sued the electoral commission, INEC, over the use of card readers and postponement of elections.
The party argues that INEC lacks the power to postpone elections in any voting units due to malfunctioning card readers.
The PDP in the suit filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, wants the court to grant four orders including a declaration that INEC “lacks the vires to postpone voting at any polling unit or voting point in Nigeria on account of a malfunctioning smart card reader.”
INEC has not announced that it plans to postpone elections in any polling unit due to smart card readers. However, the electoral commission has declared that smart card readers would be used to validate the permanent voter’s cards of all eligible voters during the election.
Five people have died after a small plane carrying them from Kenya's Maasai Mara nature reserve crashed in the west of the country, police said Wednesday.
"There were five occupants in the plane and they did not survive," said Edward Mwamburi, police chief for the Rift Valley region.
He said the Cessna plane was heading from the Maasai Mara to Lodwar, near Lake Turkana.
Policemen from the Owutu Police Station, near Agric bus stop, Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Tuesday, beat and stripped a man for allegedly refusing to allow them to check his telephone.
The man, who was seen calling on members of the public to rescue him from the policemen, was dragged into a white bus and taken to the station.
Some eyewitnesses berated the policemen’s action, saying there was no law in the country that allowed police officers to run routine checks on people’s telephones.
According to them, what the police have done is totally unacceptable as it is not their duty to search through people’s telephones.
An eyewitness, Olusola Williams, said the police had no rights to halt people’s movements in order to check their phones.
Williams stated that the police’s overbearing attitude had become so commonplace that Nigerians hardly knew their rights of existence.
He stated “It was a horrible sight this afternoon as policemen had the effrontery to strip and assault the man the way they did. His offence was that he did not allow them access to his telephone.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, said the policemen went to a cannabis smoking spot to question some of the people they met there.
He said some of the men were quietly arrested, while one fled, adding that the policemen became suspicious of the fleeing man and decided to chase after him to a shop where he ran into.
Oti stated, “The truth of the case is not what you think. The policemen went to an Indian hemp smoking spot, which they call bung. When they got to the place, they wanted to get those boys for questioning. Some of them were quietly arrested but one of them fled. So, the policemen became suspicious and went after him.
“He ran into a shop; the policemen attempted to take him from there, but he resisted arrest. However, the policemen applied minimum force, which they are authorised by law to apply. They were able to take him into the vehicle. He kept struggling with them and trying to jump out of the moving vehicle. They held him down. It was not as if they beat him.
“So, to the ordinary eyes, it appeared as if they were beating him when he was struggling with them. The policemen were not beating him per se.”
The police in Ogun State have arrested a 44-year-old man who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s six-year-old daughter.
Rafiu Moruf, the police said, was arrested on Monday after the victim’s mother knew about his alleged exploits on the minor.
Moruf, said to be living with his wife behind Aferiku Secondary School, Idiroko allegedly penetrated the child sexually leaving injuries in her private part.
In a statement by the spokesman for the command Abimbola Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), the girl opened up to her mother after the latter noticed she was acting strangely.
“Upon close examination, the woman discovered semen inside the girl’s private part. She questioned the girl and she revealed that the suspect took her into his room and had carnal knowledge of her.
“The woman reported at the Idiroko Police station and detectives went to the suspect’s house where he was promptly arrested.
“On interrogation, the suspect confessed to the commission of the crime. The victim has been taken to hospital for medical treatment and report.
“The Commissioner of Police Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to Anti Human trafficking and Child labour Unit of the State Criminal investigation and intelligence Department (SCIID) for proper investigation and prosecution,” Oyeyemi said.
Some indigenes of Odo Ora in Ido Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State have locked their monarch, the Obalemo, Oba Samuel Akinola Adeyemo, out of his palace.
Oba Adeyemo said he was locked out of the palace by suspected hoodlums allegedly mobilised by some interest groups in the community.
The development followed allegation by kingmakers and other community leaders that the procedure that produced the monarch was faulty and that he had not been duly installed as ruler.
A 57-year-old man, simply identified as Ismaila, has died after an alleged s-x romp with his married lover in a Lagos hotel.
Punch Metro gathered that Ismaila, who was married to two wives, had gone to the Ace Bar in the Akoka area of Yaba, Lagos, with his alleged mistress on Sunday.
It was learnt that around 7pm, the mistress called for help when her lover reportedly slumped.
A source, who preferred not to be named, said by the time Ismaila was taken to the hospital, he was confirmed dead.
The source said, “The incident happened around 7pm on Sunday. The man came in with the woman. After some time, she called for help saying that the man had slumped. As soon as the hotel management was alerted to the incident, the man was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.
“Immediately the man was confirmed dead, his corpse was taken to the police station in a taxi together with the woman, and the case was reported. It was from there that the police took over the case and the body was deposited in the morgue for autopsy.”
A resident of the area, who spoke to Punch correspondent on condition of anonymity, however, said the mistress was also married and a nursing mother.
“The woman is a seamstress at the Sabo Market. She left her six-month-old baby to meet the man after church service on Sunday. Her husband had been warning the man to leave his wife alone, all to no avail, and her husband had to bring the child to her at the police station after she was arrested.
“The man also had two wives and one of his daughters got married last year. He was a retiree and had just received his pension.
“The news going round is that after the s-x romp, he took two bottles of water and while he was taking his bath, he slumped and foamy substances came out of his mouth. It is hard to tell if he died of cardiac arrest or due to unnatural circumstances,” the source added.
When the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, was contacted, he said investigation into the incident was ongoing.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, sitting in Abuja, has ordered key security agencies in the country to arrest the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, and produce him for trial on Friday.
The Mr. Danladi Umar-led panel tribunal specifically directed the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Service, DSS, to execute the arrest warrant to ensure that Justice Onnoghen was brought before it on the adjourned date. The order followed an application the Federal Government made for a bench warrant to be issued against the suspended CJN.

The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal and three others, who were charged with N544 million fraud were today granted a N50 million bail each.
Justice Jude Okeke of an FCT High Court Maitama, who gave the ruling, said the prosecution could not provide any proof to make the court not to grant bail.
“The evidential burden is more on the prosecution to prove that the defendants are not entitled to enjoy section 36 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federation Republic of Nigeria as amended.
“Section 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 the prosecution cited said bail shall be granted except in some circumstances which the prosecution could not establish,’’ he held.
Okeke admitted them to bail in the sum of N50 million and a surety in like sum each.
He insisted that the surety must be resident in Abuja and must provide residential address to the court.
In addition to that, the judge ordered that the surety must own a landed property with the land documents submitted to the court.
Okeke also ordered the defendants to deposit their international passports and traveling documents to the Registrar of the court.

Buhari and Atiku called for free, fair and non-violent elections.

A female suspected kidnapper was yesterday apprehended and beaten to pulp after she was caught while allegedly trying to abduct three children in Ibadan, Oyo state.
It was gathered that the suspect identified as Tawa, met the children on the street at Mokola, when she attempted to kidnap them.
According to an eyewitness, the woman touched the children with a charm and they lost control. She was about taking them out of the vicinity, not knowing a petty trader by the roadside saw her and what transpired.
The trader approached her and asked her what she was doing with the children, but she couldn’t give an answer.
An alarm was immediately raised as neighbours and residents including the children’s parents trooped out and descended on the suspected kidnapper. She was stripped n-ked, beaten before she was handed over to the police.
