Big Battle Between Buhari & Atiku: Who Will Take Defeat?

President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will struggle with accepting defeat, according to an analysis of the Saturday presidential poll.

The analysis made exclusively for Daily Trust by the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, United Kingdom, however said “how they (Buhari and Atiku) express their disappointment is the key issue.”

An Associate Fellow of the Africa Programme of the institute, Dr. Lena Koni Hoffman, also said the open popularity contests on the campaign trail through a succession of open-air rallies by Buhari and Atiku “are fundamentally uninspiring.”

She said, “The upside of the 2019 elections is that it has shown that Nigerians are tired of the two main parties that have dominated the last 20 years since the country returned to democracy and have an appetite for more capable candidates emerging through more credible and transparent processes.

“This means that 2019 may be significant not because of who wins but because it’s the threshold for politics-as-usual and the beginning of a transition to a different kind of politics and crop of candidates in 2023.”

Dr Hoffman added that “Lost in the intensity of this focus on the top ticket is the down ballot vote for the 360 members of the House of Representatives and the 109 members of the Senate.”

She said members of the National Assembly “are arguably the most crucial actors after the elections because of their role in addressing constitutional and legislative issues…”

Shock As Robbers Lead Mob To Kill Innocent Man In Lagos

A 26-year-old clearing agent, Temitope Adeoye, has met his untimely death in the hands of a mob, who mistook him for a thief in the Cele-Ijesha area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that Temitope, and his friend and colleague, Babatunde Adigwe, were on their way back from work at the Tincan Island Port, Apapa, when they were accused of being thieves by some men.

The Punch learnt that while Adigwe was able to escape, Temitope was beaten and burnt to death by the irate mob.

Adigwe said the mob action took place around the Odo Olowu area of Ijesha, adding that Temitope was lynched without being given the opportunity to prove his innocence.

He said, “We closed from work around 8pm on Monday and we left the office around 8.30pm. We boarded a motorcycle, and while on our way around Odo Olowu, Ijesha, the motorcyclist said that we should pay our fares so that when we get to the Cele bus stop, he won’t have to bother about the police there.

“Temitope was sitting behind me so, I told him to alight for me to be able to bring out money from my back pocket. We were still arguing with the motorcyclist on why he decided to stop around that isolated area for us to pay him when we sighted a minibus coming from the opposite direction. The bus stopped and immediately the people inside it started calling us thieves; there were about seven men in the bus.

“They crossed to our side of the road and three of them came to meet me. I was still on the bike but Temitope was running away. The motorcyclist wanted to move but they held him down and someone was also drawing my shirt from the back so that I could fall down too. The motorcyclist and I struggled with the men and we were able to escape.

“After Temitope ran some distance, he gassed out and the suspected robbers outran him. The mob caught up with him and butchered him. I was still on the bike and looking from a distance. I saw that he tried to struggle with them. When I got to a safe place at Cele bus stop, I did not see Temitope again. I tried his telephone immediately but it was not going through.”

The Delta State indigene said efforts to get help for Temitope proved abortive as he (Adigwe) was detained when he went to report at the police station.

He added, “I did not know what to do at first, so I decided to call some of my colleagues, who would be passing that route. When about five of them arrived, they said I should go and report at the nearest police station. The nearest police station was the Cele Police Post.

“On getting there, I was directed to meet some operatives on patrol and I explained everything to them but I was further directed to go and meet the Divisional Police Officer of the Ijesha Police Station. When I reported at the Ijesha Police Station, the DPO immediately ordered that I should be detained, labelling me a suspected thief.

“He asked me to write my statement and while I was doing that, two of the robbers, who actually committed the crime, came to the police station. One of them came with a broken nose. Temitope was the one who broke his nose while he was struggling with them. I guess the suspect had gone to the hospital to take care of himself but the hospital requested a police report, which he came to collect. That was when the DPO suspected that something was amiss and asked that the two of them should be detained and their statements were taken.

“Around 2am, the DPO said he wanted to move us to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti. While we were at the counter to get our personal belongings, the DPO queried why the two had three phones on them. They were trying to avoid bringing out the phones but the DPO insisted on seeing the phones.

“As soon as they brought out the phones, the phones turned out to be Temitope’s. I told the DPO that the phones belonged to the person I was talking about. His two phones and his wristwatch were found on them. That was when it became clear that Temitope was innocent of the crime he was killed for and that he was a victim of robbery.”

Temitope’s childhood friend, Ganiu Suraj, said he received the news of his demise through his colleague, who called him.

He stated, “I was informed around 12.54am on Tuesday by one of his colleague, who called me. The person explained what happened and told me not to inform Temitope’s father yet. He lost his mother in December 2018 and his girlfriend is heavily pregnant. He had plans of going to school part-time while working and we agreed to see on Sunday to talk about it.

“He wanted to work to raise money first, because he was the breadwinner of the family. He was the one working and taking care of everyone. He said he wanted his family to be happy before going to school or pursuing any plans of his own. It is so painful that his dreams were cut short.”

Temitope’s father, Mr Adeoti Adeoye, said only justice for his son would bring him true peace.

The Ogun State indigene said, “The robbers might have got information that he had money on him, because he just got a contract and it involved a lot of money. The government should do everything in its powers to make the perpetrators of the act face justice; only then, will I have true peace.

“It was exactly three months after his mother died when he was killed. I am glad though that he was vindicated and he did not die with a bad name.”

One of Temitope’s colleagues, Yusuf Tijani, said his death must not go in vain.

Tijani said, “I had known Temitope for some time and he was neither fraudulent nor a thief.

“We learnt that there had been incessant cases of robbery in that area before and reports to the police had yielded no result, but killing him without giving him the benefit of doubt is disheartening. It is also worrisome that everybody is acting like nothing happened and before you know it, we will not hear anything about the case again; his death must not go in vain.”

When the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, was contacted by The Punch, he said two suspects had been arrested, adding that investigation was ongoing.

He stated, “The man, who raised the false alarm, has been arrested alongside one of the participants in the killing. The matter has been transferred to the SCIID, Panti, for further investigation. The matter will be charged to court at the completion of investigation.”

“The Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Mu’azu, urged the people of Lagos to refrain from jungle justice. They should hand suspected criminals over to the police for questioning and extraction of useful information that will lead to proper investigation.”

Tina Lawson Speaks On Her Daughters! Says Solange Is A Better Cook Than Beyonce

According to Beyonce’s mom, Tina Lawson, the 22-time Grammy winner and singing powerhouse isn’t very skilled in the kitchen.

In an interview with Us Weekly, Tina (65) outed her daughter for quite simply being talentless when it comes to cooking. In fact, Tina said that there’s no contest when it comes to who’s the better cook – sister Solange (32) wins every time.

“Beyoncé can’t cook.”

The Lemonade singer (37) and mom of three has even admitted cooking is her biggest weakness.

“I don’t cook much,” she told Cosmopolitan in 2006.  “But I’m good at spaghetti and sandwiches. I know they’re easy, but they’re my specialty.”

While Beyoncé may need to brush up on her cooking, Tina says one thing she definitely has down is parenting.

“They’re amazing parents. I’m most proud of the type of parents they are. They’re truly authentic and themselves, no matter what. I taught them to change the world – don’t let it change you,” Tina said while gushing about both her daughters.

Cardi B Gets Her Lip Pierced BUT The Artist Didn't Even Recognize Her

Cardi B is proudly showing off a new piercing and the tattoo artist who gave it to her had no clue she was a huge celeb!!!

Luis Vega, the owner of City of Angels Tattoos, explains, Cardi randomly walked into his shop looking to get her lip pierced. Luis says he didn't know it was Cardi until they started talking.

Luis thought he recognized CB's face, and initially figured she was just a former client. After Cardi told him she was from New York, Luis told her she looked and sounded like Cardi and that's when light bulbs started going off.  Luis slowly realized he was dealing with an A-lister, but his suspicions weren't confirmed until he poked his head outside and saw Cardi's entourage in a caravan of luxury cars.

As for the piercing he says Cardi paid $25. However, Luis has been so inspired by Cardi's visit, he's honoring her the rest of the month with a special $20 piercing for anyone who comes through.

CJN Onnoghen Goes To Appeal Court To Stop His Arrest

The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has asked the Appeal Court in Abuja to stop his arrest. Onnoghen, who faulted the Code of Conduct Tribunal’s decision to arrest him, based his argument on 11 grounds.

The suspended CJN said his decision to be absent from the CCT was not in disobedience to any order as no order to compel his attendance was served on him.

He said the tribunal erred by ordering his arrest when the
application challenging its jurisdiction to hear and determine the complaints of the respondent had not been heard.

The court document read in part, “The appellant (Onnoghen) has a pending motion challenging the competence of the charge preferred against him and the jurisdiction of the tribunal to entertain same.

“Until the issue of the CCT jurisdiction being challenged by the appellant is heard and determined, the physical presence of the appellant to take his plea is not mandatory or necessary.

“The order of the bench warrant is a breach of the respondent’s right to appellant’s right to liberty under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).”

Onnoghen said that the CCT contravened Section 266(b) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act when it ordered his arrest as the Act clearly states that an appellant has a right to be absent from court during the argument of an interlocutory application.

Onnoghen challenged the decision of the CCT chairman not to step down despite calls for him to recuse himself due to a pending corruption charge against him and “likelihood of bias.”

Onnoghen asked the Appellate Court to “give an order setting aside the order of the tribunal made on February 13, 2019; an order for the constitution of a different panel at the CCT to try him and an order dispensing his presence from the CCT.”

Nollywood Entertainers, Others Endorse Atiku For President

Nigerian entertainers, under the umbrella of the Creative Industry Group, have endorsed the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, and the party’s Lagos State governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje.

The convener of the group, Felix Duke, said that after a thorough assessment of the presidential candidates and their plans for the creative industry, they concluded that Atiku is the right man.

He said, “We appeal to our colleagues in the music, film, literary and fashion industries to vote for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. For many years, the creative sector has been ignored by past governments but the sector remains the number one job provider for youths of the country.”

Also, a veteran filmmaker, Zeb Ejiro, said he felt the industry should support Atiku when he signified his interest in ruling Nigeria.
He said, “Nollywood used to be the second most productive industry in the world but things have changed now. If Buhari rules the country for another four years, the industry will vanish.”

He also said Jimi Agbaje was the right person for the creative industry and to govern Lagos State.

Other members of the group include Paul Play Dairo, Ruggedman, Emeka Ossai, Chico Ejiro, Righteous Man and many more.

Buhari's AGF Writes INEC, Asks For Postponement Of Election In Zamfara

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) has written to INEC, asking the commission to postpone the National Assembly elections and the governorship and state House of Assembly polls in Zamafara State to enable the All Progressives Congress to field candidates in the exercise in the state.

The letter is said to be shocking to political observers.

A copy of the three-page letter bearing Malami’s signature and dated February 13, 2019 with reference number MJ/DSD/03, emerged online early Thursday.

The letter is without the acknowledgement stamp of the office of INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to whom it was addressed.

Malami, in the letter, which he said was informed by a petition he received from the law firm of M.A Mahmud & Co., anchored his request for the postponement of the elections in Zamfara State on a judgment of the Sokoto Division of the Court of Appeal.

The minister, a member of the APC, said in the letter that the Court of Appeal’s judgment delivered on Wednesday affirmed an earlier verdict of the Zamfara State High Court which had held that the party conducted valid primaries for the various elective positions in the state.

Malami said granting the concession of postponing the polls in Zamfara State in the light of the Court of Appeal’s judgment, was not a matter of doing APC a favour but a right the party was entitled to.

His letter stated, “In view of the fact, now that the Court of Appeal has upheld the primaries as valid, the APC in Zamfara State will need a little time to catch up with its contemporaries in the election.
“Granting them this concession is not necessarily a favour but a right that inures to all contestants under similar circumstances.

“Consequent on the above, INEC is invited to comply with the judgement of the Court of Appeal by admitting the results of the APC Zamfara State Primaries and to also comply with the provisions of Section38 of the Electoral Act which empowers INEC to postpone the election for the governorship, National Assembly and House of Assembly Elections.”

Opposing side reacts
The minister’s claim was however debunked by Chief Mike Ozehome (SAN), a lawyer acting for Senator Kabir Marafa and others involved in the appeal.

Calling for a press conference to address the letter by the AGF’s letter later on Thursday, Ozekhome said, “There is absolutely no legal basis whatsoever for this letter which is clearly meant to circumvent the judicial process already activated by all parties concerned.

“I act for Senator Kabiru Marafa, Hon Dauda Lawal and others.”
INEC had insisted that it would not accommodate APC’s candidates in the forthcoming polls due to the party’s alleged failure to conduct valid primaries in the state.

The Zamfara State High Court, however, ruled in its judgment that the party held valid primaries, while the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the party did not conduct any valid primaries.

In the face of the two conflicting judgments from the courts of coordinate jurisdiction, INEC insisted that it would stick to its original position that the APC failed to conduct valid primaries in the state and therefore would not be allowed to field candidates for the polls.

Hoodlums Clash In Oshodi, Lagos Over Election Money

Ahead of Saturday’s elections, some residents of Baderin Street in Oshodi, Lagos Mainland, have expressed worry over protracted clashes between two groups of hoodlums suspected to be members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

They said they would relocate their families from the neighbourhood for fear of attack.

The Nation learnt that crisis broke out in the area on Sunday night after a House of Representatives candidate gave the hoodlums ‘appeasement’ money.

It was gathered that a faction was alleged to have removed part of the money, which led to a fight.

Three persons were reportedly injured, while shops, campaign billboards and posters were damaged.

A source said the politician sent the money to the hoodlums.

A resident, who identified himself as Femi, said the clash continued on Monday morning, forcing shop owners to flee for safety.

He said: “We have not enjoyed peace since Sunday night. People are already moving their families out of this area for fear of another attack. The fight occurred between NURTW hoodlums loyal to two parties. A politician gave them money and they disagreed on the sharing formula.

“They pelted one another with stones and bottles. A man was stabbed. Many people sustained injuries while running away from the scene. The clash happened around 6pm. It continued on Monday morning. People closed their shops and ran away because the hoodlums carried weapons.

“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel later came to restore peace. After leaving, the hoodlums returned in the evening and started fighting again.

“On Tuesday afternoon, they continued the fight. The police and soldiers thereafter intervened by quelling the fight. People are afraid because this is election period. These hoodlums may return again.

“I don’t think anyone died in the clash, but it was really serious.”

Another resident, Emeka, appealed to Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu to ensure that more policemen are deployed in the area.

Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP), confirmed the incident, saying only one person was stabbed. Oti said 20 persons were arrested, adding that peace had been restored.

Oshiomhole Cries Out: INEC Is Working For PDP, Atiku

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole yesterday accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of working for the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), ahead of the general elections.

Responding to questions about an alleged collusion between the INEC and President Muhammadu Buhari, Oshiomhole alleged that at the moment, two Resident Electoral Commissioners in the Southsouth have been going about campaigning with the PDP.

Oshiomhole, who asked Nigerians not to return the PDP to power, said the pledge by the PDP candidate to float the naira was a recipe for economic woes, adding that Atiku has always been part of problem facing the nation.

He also dismissed PDP’s allegations that the APC was responsible for burning some INEC offices that have recently been engulfed in flame, stressing that he could easily allude to the fact that the PDP burnt the INEC offices because they are afraid of losing elections in those places.

He said: “If anything, this INEC has been very unfair to the APC. But we just discovered that we have a responsibility. The fact that we are a governing party imposes on us a certain level of code that you can’t be seen to rubbish every institution, because if we rubbish everything, it would mean that we don’t want election. INEC believed everything the PDP says.

“As we speak, there are two Resident Electoral Commissioners, who are virtually campaigning line by line with the PDP in the Southsouth. INEC, without giving us any explanation and without any concrete evidence, went ahead to say we can’t field candidates in Zamfara.

“Is that the way your friends behave if they are your friends? INEC is working more for the PDP based on evidence I can show. How can they explain that a court of competent jurisdiction gave orders in Zamfara to say this candidate is eligible to contest election and another high court in Abuja also gave a verdict saying APC did not conclude its primaries, but did not give order to INEC?

“There is no order issued by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The Court of Appeal made a pronouncement on this matter today that there was no order from the court in Abuja, but that there was a concrete order from a Zamfara High Court, which upheld the primaries that was conducted in Zamfara.

“The INEC Chairman has said that when there are two court orders, they will adopt the last judgment. In Zamfara State, the Abuja judgment came first and the Zamfara judgment came last, even though it is the same day.

“More as INEC has said they will always obey the last judgment, when it came to the Zamfara issue, they changed the goal post. As media practitioners, you have to be careful. When you say people alleged there were meetings and can’t even cite any, it is a disservice. We have been at the receiving end of abuse.

“There is a candidate in Kano, whose nomination we forwarded to INEC, but they changed the nomination and as we speak, we are in court over that. We showed our evidence."

AAU Suspends ASUU Chairman Over S*x-For-Marks Scandal

Authorities of the Ambrose Alli University ( AAU  ), Ekpoma have suspended the institution’s chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Prof. Monday Igbafen over alleged sexual harassment.

Prof. Igbafen who is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy was alleged to have been threatening female students with marks for s-x.

A press statement signed by the university’s spokesman, Mr. Edward Aihevba, said the suspension followed the arraignment of Prof. Igbafen before the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC) on allegations of gross misconduct bordering on sexual harassment and threat of marks for s-x.

Aihevba said Prof. Igbafen has earlier been found culpable and indicted by an investigative panel of the University for the Offence of sexual harassment.

He said a family of a female victim had threatened to drag the institution before the ICPC if it failed to bring Prof. Igbafen to book.

Responding, Prof. Igbafen said he would expose the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ignacious Onimawo, to the world that blackmail does not work within the university.

Prof. Igbafen said the suspension was part of a grand plan to intimidate ASUU chapter of the university.

He said the VC has a personal vendetta against him.

According to him, “It is a grand plot that will fail. The VC is desperate because he has so many things to hide. He is looking for a weak ASUU to manipulate.

“That petition was written against two of us when I was a Lecturer II in 2011. I answered it that my hands are clean. Is that why he is denying me of my promotion?

“All these things are plot to destabilise the Union. It is a cheap blackmail. The VC is desperate to decimate ASUU. I know he is behind all the petitions against me.”
