Women Leader Kidnapped In Delta Just Hours To Election... Abductors Demand N30m

Unidentified gunmen have abducted an All Progressives Congress (APC) women leader in Delta State, identified simply as Margaret. She is said to be a supporter of the member representing Delta Central Senatorial District in the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege.

It was learnt that Margaret, a politician and trader from Efurun in the Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, was abducted on her way back from a campaign rally at Orogun, in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the 50-year-old woman, who contested the councillorship of her local government recently, was in a vehicle belonging to the unnamed director-general of Omo-Agege’s campaign team with three other party faithful.

While the other three occupants of the vehicle escaped from the abductors, Margaret was said to have been unlucky and was whisked away to an unknown destination.

The abductors of the APC member were said to have called a friend of the victim and demanded a ransom of N30m before she could be freed.

Explaining the plight of the victim, her friend and an APC faithful, who gave his name only as Commander, told The Punch that Margaret’s captors had called him many times regarding the ransom payment.

Commander, an ex-naval officer, who said the abductors demanded N30m ransom, said he initially did not know that the women leader had been abducted until he called her telephone on Tuesday.

He stated, “When I called her number, a man picked the call and I asked him to give the phone to the owner. But the man identified himself as a kidnapper. He told me that he would give me two minutes to speak with the captive for me to know that she had been abducted. I was taken aback when I heard him say that. Anyway, I still called the line to speak with Margaret. She told me that it was true that she had been kidnapped.

“After the two minutes, they collected the phone from her and started negotiating with me. They told me to go and bring N30m to secure her release or they would kill her the next day, being Wednesday. I started begging them not to kill her and that they should allow me to contact her people to let them know of the development.”

Commander said the abductors still called him to find out how far he had gone to raise the ransom.

He noted that when the abductors called him again on Thursday, he begged them to spare her and that he was making frantic efforts to reach Margaret’s family and the party hierarchy in the state to handle the matter.

Commander added, “I went to her house on Ogbon Street in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, but did not find anybody in the place. I also reached out to our party ward chairman, Desire Odjebibo, but he told me that Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was aware of the abduction.

“I went further to reach out to the senator himself; he told me that he was aware of the incident and was working to ensure that the woman is released.”

Election: Presidency Plots Clamp Down On Media, Jam Network?

The Coalition of United Political Parties on Thursday alleged that the Federal Government had perfected plans to jam telecommunications signals around all collation centres and homes of key opposition leaders nationwide on Saturday during the presidential election.

It also said it was privy to arrangement being made to clamp down on some media houses and their reporters during the election.

The coalition’s spokesperson, Imo Ugochinyere, said this in a statement in Abuja.

He said the clampdown on media houses was meant to stop them from reporting the irregularities being planned for the election.

Ugochinyere added, “Opposition parties have reliably gathered that agents of the Federal Government have concluded plans to clamp down on media houses and their reporters on Saturday.

“This is to ensure that these media houses do not have the opportunity of informing Nigerians the various irregularities being planned for the Presidential and National Assembly elections in favour of the candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress across the country.

“Top on the list of media organisations listed for attack are the Africa Independent Television, Silverbird Television, Arise Television, Ray Power FM and 15 other radio stations scattered across Rivers, Kwara, Kano, Akwa Ibom among other states.

“The plan is to jam and destroy transmitting equipment of these media organisations on election day.

“The strategy also includes indiscriminate arrest and detention of reporters and cameramen of these stations while their working tools will be confiscated and destroyed.”

Ugochinyere also claimed that the coalition had information of the move by the government to use a brother to a state governor in the North, who he described as a director in a major base station services provider for telecommunication companies, to disconnect service providers in targeted areas under the guise of debt recovery.

“They want to keep the whole country in darkness so as to stop citizens from tweeting, blogging and giving live updates on what is going on in every centre so that they will be able to carry out their rigging plan.

“They don’t want the people’s voice to be heard because they have already concluded their evil plot to ensure that the election is not free and fair,” he claimed.

Ugochinyere urged President Muhammadu Buhari to caution his men to desist from their plans and stop their repeated acts of instigating electoral violence.

He added, “We also appeal to the USA and UK to take note of these instigators of violence and continue to fulfill their promise of visa ban punishment for the perpetrators, which will serve as a warning to their already recruited supporters and potential recruits.

“We call on the security agents working with the APC government to remember the promise they made when they took an oath to serve and protect the lives of citizens and their properties, and desist from further causing any damage and harm to innocent citizens or disrupting the polls come February 16.

“We urge our citizens not to let any noise from the invaders of our democracy called the APC distract them from coming out to vote on Saturday, to let their voices to be heard.”

Amaechi Reacts; Says INEC Chairman Working For Wike, PDP

In his reaction to allegations by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi said he had never hired militants or thugs for any reason since he joined politics 33 years ago, challenging any politician to show evidence that he had ever been involved in hiring thugs to cause destruction.

Describing Wike’s allegations as false, Amaechi said,
“I joined politics 33 years ago, let one politician either at the national or state level say he attended a meeting with Amaechi where I discussed about hiring thugs.”

The minister, however, alleged that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, was interested in ensuring that Wike got a second term in office as governor of Rivers State.

Amaechi pointed out that Yakubu was the Director of TETFUND when Wike was the Minister of State for Education.

He said, “INEC is always working for the PDP. For an example, there is a stay of execution granted by the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, just because the INEC chairman was a director of TETFUND when Wike was the minister, he has refused to implement the judgment.”

S*x Scandal: Suspended ASUU Chairman Reveals More

Suspended Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University chapter, Prof. Monday Igbafen, yesterday opened a can of worms on the institution, in his attempt to fight back.

Igbafen, an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy, was suspended for alleged s*xual harassment.

Addressing reporters in Benin City, the Edo State capital, Prof. Igbafen said
he was being victimised for asking the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ignacious Onimawo, to account for the about N5.5billion received from Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and NEEDS Assessment intervention funds.

He said he fell out with Prof. Onimawo because of his non- compromising approach to acts of impunity exhibited by the VC.

Igbafen said wife of the vice chancellor was elevated to the position of lecturer 1 from a position of a typist.

He said: “We (ASUU) challenged him to be open and transparent. You cannot move your wife from nowhere and make her a lecturer 1 without a PhD and academic master’s degree. We have been on the matter and he has made attempts to compromise me as the chairman of the union, and I refused.

“That led to his desperation that I should never be chairman of ASUU for the second time.

“The university has collected more than N5.5billion for the past five years. From the TETFUND, he has received more than N3.4billion, while the money from NEEDS Assessment is more than N1.2billion.

“The union is demanding how he has utilised these funds. Is it a sin to ask for how he has utilised our funds?”

But spokesman for the university, Mr. Edward Aihevba, said there were other charges against Prof. Igbafen, but the issue of s*xual harassment was as a result of a petition from the victim’s family.
He said the victim and her mother testified before a panel, but the former administration did not look into the report.

Aihevba said the VC has been prudent in administering intervention funds from NEEDs Assessment and TETFUND.

Said he: “Prof. Igbafen should not be shouting. He is afraid that he is sinking. He should face the music. There are other things he did and at the appropriate time, he will be made to answer for them.

“The VC’s wife entered the university as a young woman. She got her degrees and was converted by a former administration and not her husband. She got her PhD and was made lecturer 1.”

PDP To Get Live Results As APC Did In 2015... APC Complains

*PDP to deploy 40 Million for votes tabulation
With a plan to collate results of tomorrow’s presidential election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday set the stage for a dispute – the Federal Government has claimed.

The opposition party said it had put in place a Parallel Voting Tabulation (PVT) system to collate results. It is deploying 40 million of its members for the job.

But the All Progressives Congress (APC) said it was all a plot to rig the election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is the authority for the collation and announcement of results, but parties and election observers are also free to collate live results. So, many are wondering why the APC is complaining about the same thing they did in 2015.

Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed said the PDP was planning to create chaos by creating a parallel electoral umpire.

The Minister claimed that the opposition resorted to the tactic, having realised that it could not win free, fair and peaceful elections. He spoke in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, after an interactive session with retirees and pensioners.

Mohammed added that the alarm “is in line with the warning we have been issuing all along, that the PDP, jittery at the fate that is about to befall it and desperate to grab power at all costs, will seek to scuttle the elections, failing which it will work to discredit the results”.

"The latest manifestation of this desperation was revealed at a news conference by the PDP on Wednesday, during which the party said it would set up a parallel electoral body, under the tag of Parallel Voting Tabulation (PVT) system.

“The PDP said clearly that PVT is a tool that will determine whether or not it accepts the results of the elections. Now, this is anarchy.

“Yes, it is standard practice for political parties to have their own monitoring systems during elections. What is not standard is to set up a pseudo electoral commission and imbue it with the power to collate and announce results. That’s precisely what the PDP is doing under the guise of PVT. And this is totally unacceptable..."

The PDP’s campaign spokesman and chairman of its Strategy Committee, Osita Chidoka, speaking at a news conference in Abuja, described PVT as a “scientifically proven and a best-practice technique” designed to keep umpires on their toes.

Chidoka, specifically said the PDP would be transmitting the results as certified by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) officers at the polling units.

“The PDP has pivoted from recruiting first-time polling agents to recruiting high quality, educated individuals, whose maturity and experience will help them manage and mitigate against challenges on election day,” Chidoka said.

Koffi Olomide’s S-xual Assault Trial Begins In France

Congolese music star Koffi Olomide went on trial in France on Monday on charges of s-xually assaulting four former dancers who say they were held against their will at a villa outside Paris.

It was not clear if Olomide, whose real name is Antoine Agbepa Mumba, was present for the beginning of the hearing behind closed doors at the court in Nanterre just west of the capital.

The 62-year-old, a pioneer of the soukous genre that grew out of Congolese rumba, denies the assault charges as well as allegations he helped the dancers enter France illegally and withheld their pay.

The dancers say they were detained by three men at the villa in Asnieres-sur-Seine, northwest of Paris, while Olomide was touring or recording in France from 2002 to 2006, and had their passports and phones taken.

They say that they were forced to have s-x with Olomide, who struck them if they tried to resist, in the villa, in the bathroom of a supermarket, and also while in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The four dancers managed to make a night-time escape from the villa in June 2006, and have not returned to their country since then for fear of reprisals.

Olomide left France in 2009 after he was charged, and his lawyer Emmanuel Marsigny told AFP last week it was not certain the singer would appear in court.

It is not the first time Olomide has been charged with violence.

He was briefly jailed in DRCongo in 2016 for kicking one of his dancers and had already been given a suspended three-month prison sentence in 2012 for striking his producer.

He is also currently sought by Zambian police for striking a Rwandan photojournalist in Lusaka in 2012.

Olomide already had a brush with the law in France, with a court handing him a suspended one-year prison sentence for tax fraud in 2006.

Kashamu REVEALS Why Atiku Boycotted Ogun + Adebutu Still Parading Himself As Governorship Candidate...

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Buruji Kashamu, has said the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, cancelled his visit to the state to avoid causing chaos.

Kashamu, who spoke to a Punch correspondent yesterday, also said despite the controversy that surrounded his emergence as the candidate of the party, he would win the election.

The national secretariat of the PDP had picked Kashamu’s rival, Ladi Adebutu, as the governorship candidate of the party in Ogun. After a prolonged legal battle, the Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favour of the Adebayo Dayo-led state executive of the PDP in Ogun state. Kashamu emerged the governorship candidate through the faction.

Atiku was to visit Ogun State as part of his nationwide campaign; but the plan was cancelled.

Kashamu said, “He (Atiku) decided not to visit Ogun State because he wanted to avoid having any problem. You know the other guy, Ladi Adebutu, is still parading himself as the governorship candidate. We all believe his (Atiku’s) coming can cause chaos. We had written to the police and the DSS to intervene so that there would be no problems. Atiku is a man of rule of law and the national executive has not been following the rule of law, that is why he declined coming to Ogun State.”

Nigeria, Ghana Enter EU Blacklist For Money Laundering

Nigeria, Ghana, Saudi Arabia and Panama were named in a proposed European Union blacklist of nations seen as posing a threat because of lax controls on terrorism financing and money laundering, the E.U. executive said on Wednesday.

The move is part of a crackdown on money laundering after several scandals at E.U. banks but has been criticised by several E.U. countries including Britain worried about their economic relations with the listed states, notably Saudi Arabia.

Nigerian and Ghanaian officials are yet to react to the proposed blacklist.

The Saudi government said it regretted the decision in a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency, adding: “Saudi Arabia’s commitment to combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism is a strategic priority”.

Despite pressure to exclude Riyadh from the list, the commission decided to list the kingdom, confirming a Reuters report in January.

Panama said it should be removed from the list because it recently adopted stronger rules against money laundering.

Apart from reputational damage, inclusion on the list complicates financial relations with the E.U.

Poll: Nigerian Herbalist Predicts Victory For Buhari

An herbalist and the Otunba Isegun of Osun State, Alhaji Olarinoye Opeyemi Mudashiru has predicted wide margin of victory for President Muhammadu Buhari in the presidential election holding across the country on Saturday.

In a statement on Thursday, Mudashiru said Buhari would beat his closest rival, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with at least two million votes.

According to him, “I, the Otunba Isegun of Osun State from Inisha in Odo-Otin Local Government area of the State, hereby use this medium to assure our President, Muhammadu Buhari that he will be victorious in Saturday’s presidential election.

“I also want to assure the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu that he should put his mind at rest concerning the Presidential election slated for 16th February.

“We have consulted with our ancestors and it is confirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari will be re-elected. As a matter of fact, President Buhari will beat his closest rival, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with at least two million votes.”

He also said both the presidential and national assembly elections would be conducted peacefully by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) without any threat whatsoever to the security of the country.

United Christian Leaders Forum Endorse Atiku

The United Christian Leaders Eagle-Eye Forum, a body of clergymen in Nigeria, has endorsed the candidature of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The endorsement is coming less than 48 hours to the conduct of the 2019 general election scheduled to hold on Feb. 16.

Convener of the forum Pastor Habu Aminchi said they decided to support Abubakar because the APC government which it helped to enthrone in 2015, failed to fulfill its campaign promises to Nigerians.

Aminchi said the forum with over 10 million votes nationwide was not interested in any individual but in the future of the country and its children.

“Let me start by saying that this country is in no way near the pedestal it is supposed to be as the giant of Africa.

“Instead of growth, progress, unity, peace and development, the reverse is what we are seeing and experiencing today.

“This country has been riddled with so many problems ranging from economy, educational, security, power, infrastructure and many more.

“That is why we pray and believe that with the help of God Almighty, His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, will salvage the situation and make this country a pride among nations,” Aminchi said.

Amaechi Planning To Bomb INEC Offices Over APC's Loss - Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has accused the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, of plotting to bomb INEC offices, destroy voting materials at registration area centres and disrupt the peaceful conduct of the Saturday elections in the state.

Wike explained that Amaechi was planning the evil act in liaison with some compromised military and police officers.

The governor also declared Friday, February 15, 2019 as public holiday for Rivers people to pray for God’s intervention in ensuring that the elections were peaceful.

In a state broadcast on Thursday ahead of the general elections, Wike said credible intelligence revealed the plot of the minister.

The governor said, “Credible intelligence has linked Rotimi Amaechi and his cohorts in the factionalised APC with plans to prevent the peaceful conduct of the general elections in Rivers State with the support of some unpatriotic military and police officers.”

He said several Hilux vehicles painted in military colours and gunboats donated by a top official of Nigeria Ports Authority had been handed over to the militants to carry out the attacks across the state.

Wike expressed worry over what he described as needless threats of violence by the Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council at the party’s last presidential rally on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.

The governor described the internal crisis rocking the APC in the state as the consequence of Amaechi’s arrogance and refusal to follow due process.

“It is therefore most unfortunate that instead of using internal party mechanisms to settle the festering crisis before it was too late, Rotimi Amaechi chose to act with impunity and is now hunted by the unpleasant outcomes of his arrogance and disdain for due process.

“Even at that, the Supreme Court has spoken and the only rational path left for Rotimi Amaechi is to recognise the fact that justice has prevailed over impunity,” he added.

The governor, however, advised him to be political mature to accept the consistent decisions of the courts in good faith and wait for 2023 elections.

SO SAD! 91 Million Nigerians Now Living In Extreme Poverty

This is quite worrisome. Over 91 million Nigerians are now living in extreme poverty. At least three million Nigerians have slipped into extreme poverty between November 2018 and February 2019.

According to the World Poverty Clock, created by Vienna-based World Data Lab, 91.16 million Nigerians were living below a dollar a day as of February 13, 2019. Seriously?

In June 2018, the Brookings Institution projected that Nigeria had overtaken India, as the poverty capital of the world, with 86.9 million extremely poor people.

This was further confirmed by the British Prime Minister Theresa May, who said Nigeria had become home to the largest number of very poor people in the world, putting the figures at 87 million.

“Much of Nigeria is thriving, with many individuals enjoying the fruits of a resurgent economy, yet 87 million Nigerians live below $1 and 90 cents a day, making it home to more very poor people than any other nation in the world,” the UK prime minister had said.

The Cable reports that since May made this observation in South Africa in August, the number of Nigerians living in extreme poverty has grown to 91.16 million, with six people falling into poverty every minute, according to Brookings Institution.

According to the World Bank, a person can be said to be living in extreme poverty, if they live below the poverty line of $1.90 or N693.5 per day.

The bank in its explanation of poverty levels said “when estimating poverty using monetary measures, one may have a choice between using income or consumption as the indicator of well-being”.

“Most analysts argue that, provided the information on consumption obtained from a household survey is detailed enough, consumption will be a better indicator of poverty measurement than income”.

However, using the World Bank’s poverty line, if you live below $1.90 a day, you will be classified as living in extreme poverty.

"Body Bags": El-Rufai Made A Lunatic Statement - Bode George

Chief Olabode George is a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In this interview with The Independent's Temidayo Akinsuyi, he speaks on Saturday’s Presidential election, developments in Lagos and other issues. Excerpts:

The 2019 presidential election takes place this Saturday. What is your message to Nigerians?

I want to appeal both to the voters, the managers and the security agencies. Our nation is at the crossroads. This election will decide the future of our country and the generations to come. Therefore, we must play the games according to the rules. Nigeria by the creation of Almighty God is a nation like a beacon on the hill. It means that whatever happens in this nation ricochet all across Africa. It is a semblance of America and the rest of the world. If it goes well here, the rest of the world will be guaranteed that all will be well in Africa. We are no longer a dark continent. It is just the mismanagement; the lack of respect for the rule of law. Those are the issues that are making us look as if we are in the Stone Age.

In this elections, let us reflect civility and respect for the rule of law. Let whatever we do be accredited as being done in any civilised world. We are no longer a pariah nation. The whole world is centred on what happens this Saturday. I pray that the Almighty God will make us prove that we are competent and civil enough to manage ourselves. My final appeal to Nigerians is that on that day, it will be a day for this nation to come of age or to go down. Let the will of the people be respected.

For those who have been making inciting statements, what message do you have for them?
There are some people who have been making unsavoury comments, saying foreign observers will go back to their countries in bodybags. Is that not the peak of lunacy? Foreign observers are coming to monitor elections, and you, a senior public official said they will go back in bodybags? For a man that educated to be running riot is alarming. He should withdraw that statement and admit that it was a slip of the tongue. It is unacceptable, scandalous and absolutely sacrilegious.

Given the roles allegedly played by the security agencies in previous elections, especially the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun, as a retired senior officer in the Nigerian Navy, what is your admonition to the security agencies?
They should remember that they took an oath to defend the lives and properties of the people of this country. They are not enemies of Nigeria. They are Nigerians and so it will be illogical and unreasonable to turn weapons against your fellow countrymen. Those who are young now may not remember the crisis of 1963 in Western region when the elections were openly rigged. That little crisis which people dismissed that it was just within the Western region engulfed Nigeria into a civil war. No nation goes into a civil war twice and survived. We love peace and sanity.

We want good governance; we want an administration that will improve the economy, give jobs to the people; that will allow people to live anywhere they want without any encumbrances. The days of these tribal madness and religious bigotry that people have been playing can no longer old. I am a Christian. My older sister got married to a Muslim. Today, she is an Alhaja but she is still my sister. Your religious beliefs are your religious beliefs. It has nothing to do with your managerial skills.

Setting one tribe against another is no longer acceptable in a civilised setting. To me, what should be paramount to Nigerians is the need to get the best man to manage our affairs. I am happy that the PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar has spoken about restructuring. That is a very good thing. We are not saying ‘take power from here to there’. I have been to all the nooks and crannies of this nation. There is no state that God has not endowed with something, be it mineral resources, agriculture or human. So, they should go and develop all those resources for the benefit of the people. Centralising everything in Abuja and saying life begins and stops there hasn’t worked and it will never worked.
