Elections Shift Is A ‘Rude Shock’ -- Ohanaeze Ndigbo

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has described the postponement of the February 16 Presidential and National Assembly elections as a `rude shock’.

The organisation however, said that it would not draw conclusions on the matter yet until after the stakeholders meeting slated by the Independent National Electoral Commission to clarify the circumstances.

The Assistant National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mr Chuks Ibegbu disclosed this on Saturday in Enugu while reacting to the shift in the dates of the general elections.

The INEC in its preliminary reports cited logistical challenges as the major reason for the shift in dates.

Ibegbu said that such uncertainty in the implementation of plans was characteristic of human nature.

“Human activities are filled with uncertainties. Therefore, we will not pre-empt INEC until they come out to give us the full details of why the elections were shifted,” he said.

Ibegbu however, said that it was regrettable that the elections did not go on as planned considering the fact that the electoral body had told Nigerians of its readiness to conduct the polls.

President Buhari Rushes Back To Abuja, Reacts To INEC's Action

President Muhammadu Buhari has left his home town in Daura and returned to the seat of power, Abuja over the emergency stakeholders meeting called by INEC after it postponed the general elections

Below is the full reaction of President Buhri;

I am deeply disappointed that despite the long notice given and our preparations both locally and internationally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the Presidential and National Assembly elections within hours of its commencement.

Many Nigerians have traveled to various locations to exercise their right to vote, and international observers are gathered.

INEC themselves have given assurances, day after day and almost hour after hour that they are in complete readiness for the elections. We and all our citizens believed them.

This administration has ensured that we do not interfere in any way with the work of INEC except to ensure that all funds were released to the commission.

We now urge INEC to ensure not only that materials already distributed are safe and do not get into wrong hands, but that everything is done to avoid the lapses that resulted in this unfortunate postponement, and ensure a free and fair election on the rescheduled dates.
While I reaffirm my strong commitment to the independence, neutrality of the electoral umpire and the sanctity of the electoral process and ballot, I urge all political stakeholders and Nigerians to continue to rally round INEC at this trying national moment in our democratic journey.

I, therefore, appeal to all Nigerians to refrain from all civil disorder and remain peaceful, patriotic and united to ensure that no force or conspiracy derail our democratic development.

I have decided to move back to Abuja to ensure that the 14.00 hrs meeting called by INEC with all stakeholders is successful.

Facebook Taps User Data To Defend Network, Workers From Threat

Facebook gathers intelligence from its platform to identify people who threaten the firm or its workers, the social network said this week in response to media reports of the security tactic.

CNBC reported that it interviewed more than a dozen former Facebook security employees, some of whom questioned the ethics of what was portrayed as an unclearly defined practice at the leading social network.

Facebook spokesman Anthony Harrison told AFP that the company’s physical security team exists to keep workers safe and that strict processes are in place to protect people’s privacy. “Any suggestion our on-site physical security team has overstepped is absolutely false,” Harrison said.

Facebook keeps a routinely updated list of people that members of its security team should “be on lookout” for due to threatening statements, according to CNBC.

The so-called “BOLO” list purportedly includes former employees whose actions at the social network came under scrutiny.

Facebook mines the social network for threats against the company or its workers, and its watch list can even feature photos of people, CNBC reported.

Facebook keeps a routinely updated list of people that members of its security team should “be on lookout” for due to threatening statements, according to CNBC.

In cases of credible threats of violence against an employee, Facebook uses publicly available data
and industry practices to determine how close someone behind a threat is to the worker or company offices, according to the social network.

50 Ladies Sent Me A DM Shortly After My Divorce Prank- Seyi Law

Comedian Seyi LAw has explained to Saturday Beats that he got about 50 ladies hitting his DM shortly after his divorce prank went viral. Seyi Law had posted a message on instagram shortly before his London show, saying he is no longer with his wife and their daughter, Tiwa is fine.

Here's how he explains the whole prank...

“I was going to the UK to visit my wife and promote my show as well. While I was on the plane, I just had that weird idea. I was curious about what people’s reaction would be if they heard that Seyi Law was no longer married. I knew that if I was going to test it, I had to be sarcastic and witty about it. That was why I put some words in a way that people would not pay attention to (what I was doing). Apparently, they didn’t pay attention to the details; I tried to play with words in that post. Interestingly, the incident showed me that people love and appreciate my family; I also learnt that bad news travels faster (than good news).

“I thank God for a good and understanding wife; I didn’t take permission from her before playing that prank. When she saw it, she couldn’t reach me because I was still on the plane. People had been calling her repeatedly. Also, when I landed, my phone rang repeatedly. I called her to explain things to her immediately we saw each other.

“She said I should have carried her along because she didn’t know what to tell people when they called her. My wife is my number one critic; that is the beautiful thing about my marriage,” he said.

He further stated that his social media page had a lot of traffic after the prank.

“I had over 80,000 hits on my Instagram page that day; my followers grew by over 3,000 within 24 hours. I had over 50 ladies hitting on me with direct messages; that’s to tell you how mad the world can be. I don’t want to talk about what the ladies were saying for now,” he said.

Election Postponement: This Is Part Of The Problem

Did Empire Star, Jussie Smollet STAGE Hate Crime On Himself To Save His Job?

Empire actor Jussie Smollet has been accused of staging last month's racist and homophobic attack by two local TV news stations - but police are pushing back at the claims calling them 'unconfirmed' and the sourcing 'uniformed and inaccurate'.

ABC Chicago and CBS Chicago both claimed that 'multiple sources' had said detectives were considering the possibility that Smollett - together with two male persons of interest brought in for questioning Wednesday night had faked the story because Smollett was being written off of Empire.

CBS reporters claimed that police sources said Smollet 'potentially staged the attack' and said 'indicators point to Smollett orchestrating the event'.

The persons of interest are allegedly two former extras on Empire who are brothers and friends of Smollet who traveled to Nigeria hours after the attack and returned on Wednesday when they were arrested at Chicago O'Hare airport.

Cops raided their home on Thursday and found numerous items including bleach and an Empire script.

Fox has now denied that Smollet was being written out of the show and Smollet has also repeatedly denied staging the attack.

Election Postponement: Festus Keyamo Releases Statement, BLAMES PDP

Festus Keyamo, a spokesperson for Buhari’s reelection campaign committee, has expressed sadness about the sudden postponement of the General elections, and has heaped the blame on the PDP in a statement released minutes after the announcement.

“We condemn and deprecate this tardiness of the electoral umpire in the strongest terms possible.

“President Muhammadu Buhari had since cooperated fully with INEC by ensuring everything it demanded to conduct free and fair elections were promptly made available to it.

“This news is therefore a huge disappointment to us and to our teeming supporters nationwide and around the world, many of whom have come into the country to exercise their franchise.

“We do hope that INEC will remain neutral and impartial in this process as the rumor mill is agog with the suggestion that this postponement has been orchestrated in collusion with the main opposition, the PDP, that was never ready for this election.

“We note that all the major credible demographic projections have predicted a defeat of the PDP and it seriously needed this breather to orchestrate more devious strategies to try and halt President Buhari’s momentum.

“It did the same as the ruling Party in 2015, when it realized the game was up, by orchestrating the postponement of the 2015 elections by six weeks. Now, it may be up to its old trick again.

“We have earlier raised the alarm that the PDP is bent on discrediting this process the moment it realized it cannot make up the numbers to win this election. We are only urging INEC not collude with the PDP on this.

“We are truly worried because as early as Friday morning, some known PDP Social Media influencers unwittingly announced this postponement, but quickly deleted the message and apologized to the public that it was fake news,” Mr Keyamo said.

The spokesperson also urged Nigerians to support INEC in its challenges, and prevent the commission from being compromised by the opposition.

“We do not want to be forced to a situation of announcing our total loss of confidence in INEC, because we know where that would leave our democracy.

“It is in the light of the above that we wish to appeal to Nigerians and our supporters to be patient, calm and resolute despite this temporary setback.

“Let us not give anyone, especially the PDP, the opportunity to plunge this nation into a crises, which is what they earnestly desire. Its imminent defeat is just a few days away.

“Lastly, we wish to draw the attention of INEC and the world to observe that the PDP has clearly and openly said it plans to announce parallel results through some funny device it has procured or developed.

“We wish to reiterate that it is only INEC that is legally and constitutionally empowered to declare results and it constitutes an offence for anyone to do so.

“We urge INEC to speak up now and warn the PDP to desist from this ignoble act that is capable of plunging the nation into a crises of immeasurable proportions,” he said.

Mr Keyamo did not attach any evidence to corroborate his claims against the PDP or other opposition elements he accused in the statement.

Election Postponement: Atiku Accuses Buhari Of Plot To Frustrate Nigerians

The Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of plotting to disenfranchise Nigerians, moments after the general elections were formally postponed.

Mr Abubakar, however, urged Nigerians to exercise patience and not be provoked before the new dates announced for the exercise.

Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, announced at about 2:40 a.m. Saturday that the election had been postponed, barely hours after Nigerians were set to hit the polling units.

The elections would now hold on new dates scheduled as February 23 for presidential and National Assembly elections and March 9 for governorship and state assemblies elections.

“This postponement is obviously a case of the hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob. By instigating this postponement. The Buhari administration hopes to disenfranchise the Nigerian electorate in order to ensure that turn out is low on the rescheduled date. Nigerians must frustrate their plans by coming out in even greater numbers on Saturday, 23 February and Saturday, 9 March respectively,” the former vice-president added.

PDP Condemns Poll Shift, Blames Buhari, APC

The national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has condemned the postponement of the 2019 general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).

In a statement his spokesperson, Ike Abonyi, Mr Secondus described the development as a deliberate plot by President Muhammadu Buhari to cling on to power even when it has become obvious to him that Nigerians want him out.

Mr Secondus warned that the party will not accept anything short of a well organised electoral process devoid of manipulation, harassment and intimidation of voters and opposition elements.

“Having failed in all their nefarious options to enable them cling on to power, the APC and the INEC came up with the idea of shifting election an action that is dangerous to our democracy and unacceptable”, Mr Secondus said.

Mr Secondus alleged that the APC in connivance with the INEC has been trying to undermine the exercise, including burning down INEC offices in some states and destroying electoral materials to create artificial problems upon which to stand for their dubious act.

“With several of their riggings failing, they have to force INEC to agree to a shift in the election or a staggered election with flimsy excuses pre-manufactured for the purpose.

“For the avoidance of doubt the PDP sees this action as wicked and we are also aware of other dubious designs like the deployment of hooded security operatives who would be ruthless on the people ostensibly to scare them away,” Mr Secondus said.

The National Chairman recalls that the PDP had earlier alerted Nigerians that the APC was coming up with lined up rigging strategies including burning down of INEC offices and engineering crisis in PDP strong hold areas to scare away the people.

INEC Is A Big Disappointment - Situation Room

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has expressed concern over reports of delay in the distribution of election materials in several parts of the country by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which has now led to the postponement of the general elections.

It regretted that the reports reaching it indicated inadequacy in the deployment of materials for the polls.

Executive Director, Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre and Convener, Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, Clement Nwankwo, stated these in a statement in Abuja in the early hours of Saturday.

He said, “Against the background of assurances given by INEC on its preparedness, this current situation comes to us as a disappointment.

“Situation Room calls on INEC to be upfront, truthful and transparent with the Nigerian people with respect to the challenges they are facing that may affect the polls.

“The Situation Room wishes to state categorically that any assessment or decision by INEC regarding the polls or challenges with materials must be made with respect to the whole country and not in any way focused on some parts of the country.

Any suggestion that the election be held in a staggered manner will be totally unacceptable and would be a recipe for a disastrous election. INEC owes it to Nigerians to provide clear explanation on why we are having conversations about deployment of materials in this late hour.

“The credibility of election depends not just on the efficiency of INEC to manage its processes but also in its ability to communicate honestly with the stakeholders.

“We call on all stakeholders especially the political parties to approach any challenge this process throws up with patriotism and commitment to peaceful and legal resolution of conflicts.”

Drama As Woman Is Caught With Over 5,000 PVCs (Photos)

In the heat of the preparations for the just postponed general elections, a woman was caught with over five thousand Permanent Voters Card (PVCs). The unnamed woman was nabbed with the PVCs in Abia state.

She was arrested after the items were found in the booth of her car at a checkpoint.

Even though the reason for the woman being in possession of the items was not given, it is believed that this is part of a grand plan to distort the elections in the state.

It will be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been facing challenges of PVC and card readers over fire incidents.

How Buhari's Desperation Caused Postponement Of Election - Opposition Parties

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has claimed that the desperation of President Muhammadu Buhari and his men to win the presidential election, by all means, was responsible for the last minute postponement of the election.

“In their bid to once again foist an unpopular government on Nigerians, they threw caution to the winds and started setting electoral materials on fire in states that are well known to be strongholds of opposition."

The coalition’s spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere, made the allegation in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Saturday morning.

“These acts of sabotage, no doubt, ruined the preparations of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the elections.

“We have raised the alarm many times that agents of the government were working hard to ensure that elections are not held or are declared inconclusive in areas they know that the All Progressives Congress will never win. We have been vindicated.

We blame the international embarrassment this last minute postponement has caused the nation on the President, the desperate leaders of his party, APC, and the nation’s security agencies who failed woefully in their duties to protect electoral materials and INEC offices from attacks by these enemies of the nation.”
Ugochinyere added that with the postponement, “President Buhari’s judgement day with the people has just been shifted.”

He, however, said the INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, displayed courage by shifting the election.

He said the postponement averted what he could have resulted to “national bloodshed because we are aware that APC wanted to proceed with election after compromising distribution and destroying materials in over 15 states.”

Buhari Campaign Faults Postponement Of Election

The Buhari Presidential Campaign Council has faulted the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the presidential and National Assembly elections.

“We condemn and deprecate this tardiness of the electoral umpire in the strongest terms possible.”

The council’s position was contained in a statement by its spokesman, Mr Festus Keyamo, on Saturday.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari had cooperated fully with INEC “by ensuring everything it demanded to conduct free and fair elections were promptly made available to it.”

He described the postponement as a disappointment to the ruling All Progressives Congress and its supporters across the country.

He, therefore, warned INEC against bowing to the purported pressure of the opposition which he said was not ready for the elections. He claimed that projections have predicted a defeat of the opposition.

“We do hope that INEC will remain neutral and impartial in this process as the rumour mill is agog with the suggestion that this postponement has been orchestrated in collusion with the main opposition,” he alleged.

Keyamo appealed to Nigerians to be patient, calm and resolute despite what he called the temporary setback.

“Let us not give anyone the opportunity to plunge this nation into a crisis, which is what they earnestly desire,” he advised.

Landlord's Daughter Beats Tenant To Death In Lagos

The police have launched a manhunt for the daughter of a landlord on Odunsi Street, Bariga, Lagos State, for allegedly killing her father’s tenant.

The fleeing lady, identified simply as Damilola Martins, reportedly hit the woman with an object during a scuffle in their compound on Wednesday evening.

City Round learnt that the deceased, Mrs Mojisola Olasehinde, and Martin’s mother, who is the wife of the landlord, had been having a running battle over time.

When a fight ensued between the two of them that day, Martins reportedly took sides with her mother.

She was said to have picked a heavy object and slammed it on Olasehinde, making her to be unconscious.

The woman was rushed to a hospital in the community, where she died.

It was gathered that Martins subsequently fled the neighbourhood while the case was reported to the police at the Bariga Division.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Chike Oti, confirmed the incident. He said Martin’s brother witnessed the incident and had been arrested by the police to explain his role in the matter.

He said, “Around 11pm on February 13, 2019, one Mr Olakunle reported at the station that one Damilola Martins fought and killed his wife. Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased and the landlord’s wife had been having issues for a long time.

“On that day, the prime suspect and her mother fought the tenant. In the course of the fight, the suspect (Martins) hit the woman with a hard object. The woman slumped and was rushed to a hospital.

“The main suspect is on the run, but his brother who witnessed the incident has been arrested and is assisting our investigation.”

Oti added that the corpse had been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.

Atiku Reacts To Postponement Of Presidential Election

Remain peaceful in the face of this provocation, this is the message of the Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar as he reacts to the postponement of the elections by INEC.

In a statement he personally signed, Atiku said the postponed was orchestrated by the President Muhammad Buhari administration.

He, however, urged Nigerians not to be disillusioned but to come out and vote on the rescheduled date.

Atiku's full statement below:

"Dear citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,
As you know, the Independent National Electoral Commission has announced a postponement of the elections until 23 February and 9 March respectively.

The Buhari administration has had more than enough time and money to prepare for these elections and the Nigerian people were poised and ready to perform their civic responsibility by voting in the elections earlier scheduled for Saturday, 16 February, 2019.

This postponement is obviously a case of the hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob. By instigating this postponement, the Buhari administration hopes to disenfranchise the Nigerian electorate in order to ensure that turn out is low on the rescheduled date. Nigerians must frustrate their plans by coming out in even greater numbers on Saturday, 23 February and Saturday, 9 March respectively.

Knowing that the Nigerian people are determined to reject them, they are desperate and will do anything in their power to avoid their rejection by the Nigerian people.

Their plan is to provoke the public, hoping for a negative reaction, and then use that as an excuse for further anti-democratic acts.

As such, I call on all Nigerians to be patient. We have tolerated the maladministration of this government for four years. We can extend our tolerance a few more days and give them our verdict via our votes.

Maintain the peace and be law abiding. Do not react to this provocation with anger, violence or any action that might be exploited by those who do not want this election to hold. Remain calm. We will overcome this. You can postpone an election, but you cannot postpone destiny.

Please come out to vote on Saturday, 23 February and Saturday, 9 March respectively. Frustrate those who do not want this election to hold by coming out in very large numbers. That is the best antidote to their plans.

May God bless you and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria."

Nigerians React To INEC's Postponement Of Election

INEC Postpones Nigeria’s General Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has postponed the General Elections scheduled to hold today.

The commission has shifted the election by one week. Explaining how difficult it was for it to shift the general elections, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who briefed journalists at about 2:43am on Saturday, in Abuja, said the commission had met on Friday, 15th February 2019 and reviewed its preparations for the 2019 General Elections earlier scheduled for Saturday, and therefore, shifted the Presidential and National Assembly elections to Saturday, 23rd February 2019.
He said the commission would later in the day be meeting with key stakeholders at the International Conference Centre, Abuja to discuss issues surrounding the development.

According to him, “Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible, said Yakubu.

“Consequently, the Commission has decided to reschedule the Presidential and National Assembly Elections to Saturday, 23rd February 2019. Furthermore, the Governorship, State House of Assembly and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections is rescheduled to Saturday 9th March 2019, he added.
