Angry Man Attacks NEPA Officials With Machete Over Electricity

Some yet-to-be-identified members of staff of Ikeja Electric have been assaulted by a resident of Itele area of the Iju-Atan Ilogbo Local Council Development Area of Ogun State while trying to disconnect power supply to his residence.

In a viral clip video, the resident engaged one of the technicians in a fist fight before he rushed into his apartment to get a machete and attacked another of the technicians.

Despite pleas from fellow residents, the young man was seen in the footage beating the technician with the machete before he was dragged away by other residents.

Some residents could be heard appealing that the fighters should be separated, while a lady could also be heard saying that the duo should be left alone. It was learnt that the incident happened on Friday.

The Public Relations Officer, Ikeja Electric, Felix Ofulue, who condemned the attack, said investigations were ongoing on the matter and that the firm would explore all legal means to seek redress.

Ofulue said, “We strongly condemn the rising spate of attacks on our employees. It is simply unacceptable that they should be attacked while carrying out their legitimate duties. Security personnel are doing their job about it; investigations are ongoing and when the report is out, we will explore all legal means possible to seek redress and we won’t take it lightly.

“As a responsible organisation, we have provided multiple redress channels through which customers can express themselves. Even the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has provided a forum for dissatisfied customers to further seek resolution. So, to brutally attack our people in this manner displays a total disregard for humanity, a situation that we will not take lightly.

“Our commitment to providing our customers quality service is sacrosanct; however, Ikeja Electric will spare no resources to bring to justice any person or group of persons, who take the law into their hands by inflicting bodily harms on any of its employees. We will go as far as the law permits as we are duty bound to do.”

It was learnt that the matter had been reported to the police.

Restructuring Is The Way Forward For Nigeria - Afe Babalola

Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, has reiterated that Nigeria may continue to grapple with its prevailing problems of spiral unemployment, insecurity and under-development, unless the country treads the path of restructuring.

Specifically, Babalola, who received the management team of the Nigerian Tribune in his office in Ado-Ekiti over the weekend, said until Nigeria goes back to implement the blueprint the trio of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and the late Sardauna painstakingly fashioned out for 10 years in Lancaster House, England between 1950 and 1960, Nigeria may find it difficult to evolve as a nation.

His words: "Those who know me would appropriately recall that I have been championing the course of restructuring for some times now... I was then and I am still an advocate of restructuring Nigeria. In my articles in the Vanguard and Tribune Newspapers on Wednesdays and Thursdays respectively, I have published many articles on the restructuring of the country. As a member of Constitutional Conferences, I have also argued in favour of true federal structure. The truth is that today, there is a strong wind of restructuring blowing over the country. It is not just strong a wind, it is a hurricane restructure. The loud voice of those who desire a united and strong country, which would metamorphose into a nation is that the country should be restructured.”

Lagos Cultist In Bloody Fight: 50 Vehicles, Buildings Destroyed

Fifty vehicles and several shops were vandalised yesterday in Oworoshoki, Lagos, in a burtal cult war. Twenty persons have been arrested over the clash, which started around 2am and lasted till 7am.

The hoodlums shattered vehicles’ windscreens and looted shops.

Some residents told The Nation that shouts of “Kill them all, kill anyone you see” and sporadic gunshots woke them from sleep, forcing them to flee their homes.

It was gathered that Ayo Odugbesan, Church, Oke Eri, Odo Eran and Aralamo streets, among others, were affected. A source, who pleaded anonymity, said they saw the street urchins around 7pm on Saturday and alerted the police.

“At about 7pm, we saw those boys trooping to our area. Some people fled because some of those boys were arrested recently and sent to jail. How they regained freedom and found their way back is surprising.

“We are not safe in Oworo. These cultists are making life unbearable for us. We need help in this area. The destruction started around 2am.

“No death was recorded. It seems their target was to kill the night guard, but he escaped.

“They shot non-stop, smashing vehicles. They were just destroying things. It was around 5am that people came out and saw the massive destruction. They were moving from street to street, vandalising vehicles,” he added.

A Community Development Association (CDA) executive said they were afraid that the hoodlums could return. He appealed to security agencies to deploy additional personnel in the area.

According to him, over 50 vehicles were affected.

Notorious 7-Man Robbery Gang Arrested On Valentine's Day

Members of a seven-man gang said to be notorious for robbing Lagos residents of their valuables were arrested by the Rapid Respond Squad of the Lagos State Police Command on Valentine’s Day.

It was gathered that the syndicate was known for terrorising residents around the College Road, Fagba, and Abattoir areas of the state.

The suspects, Lekan Akinyemi, 23; Chimeze Ofulie, 18; Babangida Abdullahi, 22; Abubakar Umaru, 30; Samuel Oyinloye, 24; Timileyin Oladipupo, 27; and Habeeb Olayinka, were arrested around 9pm on College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, after the gang had robbed more than five passers-by of their valuables while brandishing knives and other dangerous objects.

A statement issued by the command on Sunday stated that all the suspects said they came from different parts of the country but were residing in Abattoir, Agege, Lagos.

The suspects had, on Thursday last week, allegedly robbed one Augustine Agafe after he alighted from a taxi at College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye.

Among the items they reportedly collected from their victim were an android phone, N14,000, and a handbag.

Agafe stated, “I allowed them to rob me because they were many and were holding dangerous weapons, but I trailed them to an open place before raising the alarm. This drew the attention of some RRS officers on patrol in the area and they arrested some of them.

“They equally robbed some other victims, among who were a lady and her boyfriend. The hoodlums dispossessed them of their phones and stabbed the boyfriend, who refused to let go of his mobile phone after parting with his wallet.”

In his confessional statement, one of the suspects said his gang specialised in robbing passers-by at night by collecting their mobile phones, bags, jewellery and wallets.

An investigation by the police revealed that one of the suspects, Oladipupo, popularly known as ‘Timi Yahoo’, specialised in working on SIM cards of stolen phones to determine which ones were enabled for Internet banking in order to transfer money from their victims’ accounts.

“I have worked on so many SIM cards given to me by Akinyemi and other groups in Agege, and what I do is to further increase our gain from the robberies by transferring victims’ money from their bank accounts after using some software to determine how much is lodged in their accounts, and we share the proceeds,” Oladipupo stated.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mu’azu Zubairu, who ordered the arrest of all the gang members, added that they had been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for a thorough investigation. He noted that the gang members would be charged to court as soon as investigations was completed.

You Can't Stop Us - APC, PDP Reply INEC, Resume Campaign

Political parties participating in the 2019 general elections have said they will not obey the directive of INEC that they should stop campaigns after the postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday morning.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had on Saturday while giving reasons for the postponement of the elections, said campaigns had ended on Thursday.

But the APCs, the PDP and the Coalition of United Political Parties, on Sunday said they would never obey the order, saying that they would continue their campaigns.

We will continue our campaigns – APC, PDP
A report by the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation, monitored in Kano, on Sunday, quoted the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole and a Director in the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as saying the electoral laws allowed for campaigns to go on until 24 hours before polls.

Kwankwaso said, “Nobody asked that the elections should be delayed. So, since the elections have been postponed, they (INEC) should allow everybody to campaign.

“Everybody knows that what the electoral law says is that campaigns can continue until 24 hours to the elections so, since the elections have been postponed by one week, political parties should continue with their campaigns.”

Kwankwaso, who said he was certain nobody was happy with INEC’s decision to postpone the elections, prayed that such would not repeat itself on Saturday.

To give fillip to its position, the PDP on Sunday said it took the decision to re-open its campaigns after due consideration of the provision of the Electoral Act.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement, said the PDP rejected what he called the wrongful administrative prohibition of open campaigns by INEC.

He said, “Our position is predicated on the clear provision of Section 99 (1) of the Electoral Act, which stipulated that “for the purposes of this Act, the period of campaigning in public by every political party shall commence 90 days before polling day and end 24 hours prior to that day.

“The clear import of this provision, in the current situation, is that given the postponement of the elections to February 23, the 24 hours requirement for closure of all public campaigns falls on the midnight of February 21.”

The BBC reported that Oshiomhole said the electoral law allowed for campaigns until 24 hours before the commencement of polls.

He said, “INEC cannot go contrary to what the law says. Everyone knows that campaigns can only be suspended 24 hours to an election, I will continue with campaigns on Sunday (yesterday) because if we don’t campaign, people will not come out and vote.

“We will tell the people what happened has happened. Let them come out and vote for the President (Muhammadu Buhari). For one week, if we don’t talk, people will forget; we will campaign.”

CUPP asks opposition parties to resume campaigns for Atiku
On its part, the CUPP asked its members to shun INEC’s directive and resume campaigns ahead of the Saturday’s elections.

CUPP, in a statement by its national spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere, also said Yakubu’s position was unconstitutional.

He argued that since the presidential election had been moved to Saturday, political parties were at liberty to resume campaigns till midnight on Thursday.

Ugochinyere, therefore, asked members of CUPP to resume campaigns from Sunday (yesterday) and mobilise voters for the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

We will take final position on electioneering today – INEC
But reacting to the parties’ defiance to the commission’s order, INEC said it would take a final decision on whether or not political parties could resume campaigns for the elections on Monday (today).

The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, who disclosed this in an interview with one of our correspondents on Sunday, said the meeting of the commission’s management would determine whether the electoral body would shift its ground on its earlier decision on campaigns or not.

Oyekanmi in the interview with The Punch said, “On the issue of campaigns, the commission will meet tomorrow (Monday) and take a decision on the matter. On the issue of Zamfara State APC candidates appearing on the ballot papers, I have no comments on that at the moment.”

Falana faults INEC on campaign ban
However, a Lagos-based lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), called for the unbundling of INEC. This, he said, would have averted the last-minute postponement of the elections originally scheduled to hold last Saturday.

Falana, in a statement he issued in the aftermath of the rescheduling of the polls, also criticised INEC’s decision to stop campaigns by parties.

He said political parties were by Section 99 of the Electoral Act allowed to campaign up till 24 hours to the new date of elections.

According to him, with the delay of the elections by one week, political parties’ campaign period had changed and would only end 24 hours to the elections.

FG forced INEC to postpone elections, says Wike
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, said contrary to excuses being fed Nigerians, the Federal Government pressured the INEC chairman to postpone the elections.

Wike, who made these remarks in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday, said he was sure that Nigerians were shocked to note that despite the assurances from the commission, the elections were postponed.

The governor alleged that the Federal Government had sensed that it was going to lose the February 16, 2019 elections, adding that it allegedly ordered the commission to begin a process of staggering the elections. This, Wike said, would be done by postponing elections in Rivers and other strategic states including Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Kwara to other dates.

Woman Arrested For 'Swindling' Church Of N100million

The police in Ogun State have arrested a 39-year-old woman, Onyinyechi Iwuagwu, for allegedly swindling a church-based organisation of N100million.

Onyinyechi, the police said, had defrauded MIA Enterprises of the sum of N100m on the pretext of assisting the organisation to raise money for charity.

Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said Onyinyechi’s arrest followed a petition to Commissioner Ahmed Illiyasu, from the organisation’s lawyer, Godswill Ojakovo.

Oyeyemi said in a statement yesterday that the lawyer reported that the suspect claimed to have a Local Purchase Order (LPO) from a company known as Location 3 Properties and appealed to MIA Enterprises to fund the LPO.

“Consequently, N33,118,000 was transferred to her online,” Oyeyemi said.

He added: “While the organisation was awaiting the repayment of the above amount, the suspect came with other LPOs she purportedly got from Ancillia Catholic Hospital, Iju, Lagos and Holifull School, Ikorodu, Lagos, upon which another sum of N77 million was given to her after showing relevant documents and proof to back her claims.

“He stated further in the petition that as soon as she got the last payment in September 2018, the suspect disappeared. This prompted the church to make discreet enquiries about the LPOs submitted and found out that they were forged.”

Oyeyemi said CP Illiyasu, upon receipt of the petition, directed the monitoring team to go after the suspect, adding that she was trailed and arrested on January 21.

“The suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation. She admitted that the LPOs presented by her were forged, as most of the companies where she claimed to have gotten the LPOs were only imaginary. The CP has directed the team to arraign the suspect as soon as investigation is concluded,” said Oyeyemi.

You Lied About Weather - Buhari's Aviation Minister Replies INEC Chairman

The Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, on Sunday said the country’s weather was good for flight operations on the eve of the elections, contradicting claims made by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

"INEC should say something else as weather was good for flight operations on the eve of elections, similarly all airports were directed to open 24 hours during the election period."

Yakubu on Saturday blamed the postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections on bad weather which affected flight operations.

But speaking via his verified Twitter handle on Sunday, Sirika tweeted that INEC should say something else instead of using weather as an excuse.
The minister also stated that all airports were directed to open 24 hours during the election period and further gave thumbs-down to INEC in his tweets.

However, INEC insisted that the weather was bad some days before the election day. It said it did not claim that the weather was bad either on Saturday or Friday.

Spokesman for the electoral body, Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzezi, who spoke with The Punch, insisted that the commission was not lying.

He said, “Did we say weather was bad on Saturday or Friday? No, we said days before the election and we stand by that.”
