Is Buhari's Govt. Secretly Plotting Against INEC Chairman?

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara has accused the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress of plotting to embarrass the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in a bid to remove its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu from office.

He also described comments credited to President Muhammadu Buhari at the national caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Monday warning that intending ballot boxes snatchers would be risking their lives, as a call to jungle justice, saying the nation’s extant laws are enough to deal with electoral offenders.

Addressing a press conference at the PDP Presidential Campaign Office, Maitama, Abuja, Hon. Dogara condemned President Buhari and APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole’s allegations accusing the PDP of having prior information of plans to shift the polls last week.

“We know they are doing everything humanly possible to discredit INEC, remove the chairman and stall the process conscious of the fact that they cannot win this election.

“From our position, we strongly believe that the deliberate delivery of election materials to the wrong electoral centers, cancellation of flights, and other actions that undermined the logistics arrangement of INEC were deliberately done to sabotage and manipulate the process.

“We are also very familiar with the pressure brought on INEC by top government officials and APC leaders to go ahead with the elections despite not being adequately prepared for the election.

"We are also aware the APC wanted the INEC chairman to conduct elections in some states and postpone in other states so as to have staggered elections. It should also be noted that the areas that would have been affected by inadequate delivery of materials were PDP strongholds,” he said.

Quoting President Buhari as saying that “Anybody who decides to snatch boxes or lead thugs to disturb the election, may be that would be the last unlawful action you would take.

"I have given the military and police the order to be ruthless. I am going to warn anybody who thinks he would lead a body of thugs in his locality to snatch boxes or to disturb the voting system; he would do it at the expense of his/her own life,”
Dogara urged Nigerians not to be deterred in their quest to elect a new government next week.

He said, “we categorically deny these false claims and unnecessary blackmail and regard the President’s statement as a call for extra-judicial killings considering the fact that there are adequate provisions in our laws to address electoral offenses.

“These statements clearly indicate that our democracy has become the victim of a full blown dictatorship, when one considers that a democratically elected President would give a directive that is in clear violation of the laws of the land which by his oath of office he is to defend and protect.

“In view of this statement by the President, it is obvious that the military has been given a central role and co-opted into the conduct of the election despite the fact that they have no constitutional role in our electoral process.”

Dogara also had some words for the APC chairman, whom he tasked to reflect on his allegation against the PDP.

“We also strongly condemn Mr. Oshiomole’s false, mischievous and inflammatory claims against our party, when he said INEC colluded with PDP to abort last week’s elections.

"This is a very surprising statement considering the fact that the federal government controls every institution and agency involved in the electoral process, including the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Nigerian Airforce, Aviation authorities amongst others.

“It is important to note that the APC in its usual manipulative style is now shifting the blame on INEC leadership while absolving itself and the other institutions of government under its control of any blame.

"That is the common strategy that super villains always employ. Dogara who is a technical adviser to the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar expressed worry that a sitting government is playing the victim card; a development he described as a novelty in the nation’s political history.

“This is the first time that we have witnessed a ruling party play victim,” he continued, stressing that it is “a clear indication that they have lost the plot. Evidently, their recent actions and statements clearly show they are panicking and desperate to cling onto power, even when the people have rejected them.”

Party Raises Alarm Over Plans By Presidency To Rig The Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Buhari Presidency of releasing over N6 billion looted from federal funds to All Progressives Congress National Assembly candidates to execute the party’s rigging plans in the February 23rd Presidential and National Assembly elections.

PDP made the allegation in a statement released by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan. The statement reads'

'Information available to our party shows that
each of the 109 APC senatorial candidates received N20 million, the 360 APC House of Representatives candidates are being given N10 million each, while various amounts are being disbursed by the Buhari Presidency to some other APC leaders for the rigging plot.

The looted fund are to be used by the APC to dress fake security agents, arm thugs and bribe compromised INEC officials and manipulate the elections in the various Senatorial and Federal constituencies across the country.

Intelligence at our disposal indicates that part of the money was sourced from alleged diversion of funds meant for the rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in various states of the federation.

This is in addition to monies allegedly siphoned from some income generating agencies, including the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

It is indeed a callous act of wickedness and impunity that the Buhari Presidency, in its claimed integrity, would descend to the lowest level of decadence by looting of funds meant for the development and wellbeing of Nigerians to finance their rigging plots.

At a time well-meaning leaders all over the world are exerting themselves in creating wealth for their people and developing their nations, the Buhari Presidency, which plunged the nation into a bitter economic recession, is still busy frittering our national resources to finance its vicious plots against the already impoverished citizens.

The Buhari Presidency and the APC have further exhibited that they are inherently corrupt, pervert and have no iota of interest in the wellbeing of Nigerians.

Such impunity and recklessness of the Buhari Presidency is directly responsible for the economic hardship, poverty and escalated bloodletting in our country in the almost four years of the Buhari administration.

The PDP therefore charges Nigerians to be alert and continue to rally behind the people’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the all-important quest to rescue our dear nation from the clutches of the corrupt, dictatorial and incompetent Buhari administration, which now seeks to truncate our electoral process and derail our democracy.'

US Lawmaker Blames Buhari Over INEC Problems, Tells Trump What To Do In Nigeria

Rep. Chris Smith, immediate past chairman of the United States House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, has spoken on the postponement of Nigeria elections.

His reaction was contained in a statement he signed on Monday;
“Responsibility for the delay of Nigeria’s presidential election lays squarely with President Muhammadu Buhari and those close to him.

“Actions in advance of the election — including removal of Supreme Court Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen and arson attacks on Independent National Electoral Commission offices in opposition strongholds — are undermining confidence that this election and subsequent gubernatorial elections will be free and fair.

“At a minimum, the presidential election must meet the 2015 standard, which saw a peaceful transfer of power and a statement by the then-sitting president that all bloodshed must be avoided.”

Rep. Smith also called upon the Trump Administration and the State Department to focus greater attention upon Nigeria.

"In addition to being sub-Saharan Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria is its biggest economy, and what happens in Nigeria has ramifications beyond its borders,” Smith said.

“Given the magnitude of global problems Secretary Pompeo must contend with, he should consider appointing a Special Envoy for Nigeria vested with full authority.

“The State Department must use all tools at its disposal, including visa denial and sanctioning authority, to hold accountable those who undermine democracy and foment sectarian and ethnic violence.”

Earlier, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), expressed her concern after Presidential and National Assembly elections in Nigeria were postponed to February 23rd.

A statement she signed reads: “This delay impacts Nigeria’s 84 million registered voters who traveled from cities across Nigeria, as well as North America, Europe and Asia, for the sole purpose of making their voices heard at the ballot box.

“My hope is that this delay does not impact voter turnout or harm the credibility and legitimacy of the election, as the postponement could impact local, regional, and international observation missions.

“Nigeria’s electoral institutions played a critical role in ensuring that the 2015 elections were carried out in a transparent, fair, and peaceful manner. I hope to see that tradition continue during this 2019 election cycle.

“Nigeria can serve as an example for the region as a whole and I hope that this postponement does not negatively impact that potential.”

We Didn't Abandon Baba Suwe - TAMPAN

The Theatre Arts and Motions Pictures Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) has denied abandoning one of its members, Babatunde Omidina, a Yoruba movie comedian, in the hospital.

The renowned comedian, popularly known as 'Baba Suwe', is currently battling an undisclosed illness.

While speaking with reporters on Monday, in Abeokuta, Bolaji Amusan, the National President of the association, said the report was concocted and sponsored by mischief-makers to discredit TAMPAN.

Amusan, popularly known as 'Latin', said the association had been taking care of the veteran actor’s medical bills since 2017, under the administration of immediate past president, Dele Odule.

He said: “I have just instructed the Lagos executive of the association to check on him to ascertain his health progress.

"I can tell you that we have not abandoned  Baba Suwe, as well as any of our members, as being speculated in some quarters by mischief-makers."

Amusan also added that they had designed a new policy to help members of the association.

Court Stops EFCC From Declaring Maina Wanted

An Abuja Federal High Court has stopped the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from declaring Abdulrasheed Maina, the chairman of Pension Reform Task Team.

He had been declared wanted after reports emerged in 2017 that he was reinstated after his dismissal from the federal civil service in 2013 over corruption-related charges.

In a judgement delivered by Justice F.O.G. Ogunbanjo, the court held that it was unlawful for the commission to declare Maina wanted.

In a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/957/2918 instituted by Maina on September 5, 2018, he sought a determination of the legality of being declared wanted by EFCC.

He also sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining EFCC from further harassing or declaring him wanted.

He further prayed the court to order the EFCC, both jointly or severally, its staff, agents, privies, representatives and any other person or related affiliates under whatever name or guise, to forthwith steer clear and remove his picture, name, references, addresses, details and other particulars from the wanted list published on the EFCC official website or any other related platform wherever it may be.

Ruling on the matter, Justice Ogunbanjo gave an order of perpetual injunction restraining EFCC and its affiliates or related bodies from further declaring him “wanted” in relation to subject matter of this suit.

I Will Lead Protest If INEC Shifts Elections Again - CharlyBoy

Maverick activist, Charly Boy, has said that he will lead a peaceful protest to the headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) if the agency shifts the Presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday.

Charly Boy said this in an interview with the News men on Tuesday in Abuja.

Charly Boy, the Convener of Ourmumudondo Movement, however, noted that he saw the inability of Nigeria to hold the polls on the scheduled date as ‘an act of God’. He however warned that any further shift of the elections, especially the presidential poll, would be protested by his group.

“I want to believe that what happened on Saturday is some kind of divine intervention, no matter how much things have become so politicised in our environment. “However, if there is another postponement, we will go to INEC office to tell us what is happening and whether they are truly independent or not. “Unless they want to set fire on an already tensed situation in the country, I see no reason why INEC should postpone the elections again. “Nigerian politicians are very desperate to get and hold unto power and it is part of my nationalistic engagement to speak against mindless political criminality in the polity, “he said.
