Disquiet In PDP As Jonathan Loses Senatorial District To Sylva, APC

There was loud silence in the Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the inability of former President Goodluck Jonathan to deliver his community and senatorial district to the party in the just-concluded elections.

Results of the elections showed poor performance of the PDP in Jonathan’s Otuoke community in Ogbia Local Government Area and his entire East Senatorial District comprising Ogbia, Nembe and Brass local government areas.

The senatorial district fell to a former Governor of the state, Chief Timipre Sylva, who worked assiduously to deliver the senatorial candidate of the APC, Mr. Degi Eremienyo Wagara and the candidate for Nembe-Brass Federal Constituency, Isreal Sunny-Igoli.

Results from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that Wagara scored 43,303 to defeat the candidate of the PDP, Ipigansi Izagara, who polled 32,363 votes and the ADC candidate, Senator Nimi Amange with 16,936.

Also in the Brass-Nembe Federal Constituency, the former President was said to have done nothing to deliver the PDP candidate, Marie Ebikake, who scored 19,279 against 41,150 polled by the APC candidate.

It was gathered that Jonathan would have lost his entire Ogbia to the APC but for the efforts of Governor Seriake Dickson’s appointees, who went extra miles to rescue the PDP.

Party sources said it took the efforts of the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, to avert the defeat of the PDP candidate for the Ogbia Federal Constituency, Fred Obua, by the APC.

Iworiso-Markson was said to have worked with the newly appointed Special Adviser on Grassroot Mobilisation, Captain Ozu; the Senior Special Assistant on Youths, Osaanya B. Osaanya to deliver Obua, who scored 12,048 votes to win the APC candidate, Samuel Ogbuku, who got 7,995 votes.

The PDP leadership in the state was said to have bemoaned the former President’s attitude saying it justified an allegation  by a group, Ogbia Renaissance, that Jonathan, his wife, Patience and A.J. Turner were working against the candidates of the PDP.

A top member of the PDP, who spoke in confidence, said what transpired on the election day was brazen anti-party by Jonathan’s loyalists in the PDP and some disloyal appointees of the governor.

“The Ogbia Renaissance raised the alarm days before the election accusing the former President and his loyalists in the PDP of working against the candidates of the party in Ogbia and the Eastern Senatorial District.

“Despite denying the allegations and pouring invectives on the group, the anti-party played out in the election as these individuals openly backed and sponsored the APC and the ADC House of Representatives candidates.

“There associates, who are PDP appointees in Dickson’s government also worked against the PDP candidate. It took special efforts and commitment of some loyal appointees of the governor such as Daniel Iworiso-Markson to avert the defeat of our House of Representative candidate in Ogbia Local Government Area.

“We are watching them and we have noted the roles each of them played. The PDP in the state had already established a disciplinary committee and the names of these people have been penciled down.

“They will be invited after the election to face the committee. It is shameful that under the watch of former President Jonathan, PDP lost a senatorial district to the APC in an area that is supposed to be a stronghold of our party. This is what anti-party can cause”.

UK Congratulates Buhari On Securing Second Term

The United Kingdom on Wednesday joined other world leaders to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari on his victory at the just concluded presidential election.

The Minister of State for Africa Harriett Baldwin, in a congratulatory message contained in a statement released to journalists, said the outcome of the election has demonstrated the resilience and a commitment of the Nigerian people to democracy.

“I offer my congratulations to President Buhari on securing a second term as the Nigerian President”, Baldwin said, describing the UK as a long-standing friend and partner of Nigeria and the Nigerian people.

While noting that a stable and prosperous Nigeria would benefit Africa and the world, he said: “The Nigerian people have demonstrated resilience and a commitment to democracy. The result declared by the Nigerian election commission is consistent with the result obtained through the civil society Parallel Vote Tabulation process.

“Along with our international partners, the UK believes the Nigerian people can have confidence in the result.”

The minister however said that the UK was not unmindful of the independent Nigerian voices that have expressed concerns about the conduct of the electoral process, in particular logistics and results collation, and reports of intimidation of election officials.

To this end, the statement appealed to any party or individual who wishes to challenge the process to do so peacefully and through the appropriate legal channel.

The statement on the other hand encouraged the federal government to examine all allegations of wrongdoing carefully, and take the necessary action against individuals found responsible.

“My thoughts are also with the families and friends of those who lost their lives in election-related violence. No one should die in the exercise of their democratic rights. We will continue to support Nigeria and its civil society in drawing lessons from these elections and strengthening its democracy,” the statement added.

We Will Stop Recognizing Buhari As President After May 29 – Opposition Parties

Opposition political parties under the aegis of the Coalition of United Political Parties have vowed not to recognise Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s President beyond May 29, 2019.

They said they would ensure, within civil means, that Buhari did not enjoy what they called a stolen mandate based on his declaration as the winner of last Saturday’s presidential election.

The coalition’s national spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere, made the political parties’ position known in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ugochinyere urged Nigerians to continue to support opposition parties in their quest to retrieve the mandate for the rightful owner.

He said, “The opposition rejects the cooked and panel beaten figures and will not recognise General Muhammadu Buhari as the carrier of legitimate mandate beyond May 29, 2019."

Describing Buhari’s victory as pyrrhic, Ugochinyere said that there is evidence nationwide that the 2019 presidential election was a clear departure from the electoral gains made in 2015.

He said it was glaring that the ruling APC massively stole votes and suppressed votes of the opposition to such an extent that the election is the worst since Nigeria’s return to democracy 1999.

Akpabio Insists: "I Didn’t Lose, The Results Will Be Corrected"

Former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has promised to challenge his loss in the February 23 National Assembly elections. In fact, he said he won the election.

According to the result declared by the INEC Returning Officer,
Chris Ekpenyong, who is a former deputy governor of Akwa Ibom state, scored 118,215 votes to defeat the incumbent senator, Akpabio of the All Progressives Congress, who secured 83,158 votes.

The result was announced at the INEC headquarters in Uyo instead of Ikot-Ekpene due to alleged security threats in the area.

But Akpabio, who spoke on The Verdict, a live programme of Channels Television, on Wednesday, vowed to challenge the collation of the results, adding that he could not lose the election.

The senator said, “I won. It’s a temporary setback. That is why there are processes. For instance, if you feel that you were cheated or there was wrong collation, you have recourse to the courts. I did not fail; I can’t fail.

“I believe strongly that there must have been some wrong collation somewhere. Those things will be corrected. We have processes in the election. It’s from one stage; we have to do registration, vote and collate.

“As far as there is a mistake anywhere, you go to the court and get your mandate. My mandate is somewhere waiting for me. My people know that I can’t fail elections.”

Please Concede Defeat To Buhari – Arewa Tells Atiku

The Arewa Consultative Forum has called on former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku to concede defeat in the just concluded election and congratulate president Muhammadu Buhari.

Similarly, the ACF has also called on the president elect, Muhammad Buhari “to ensure that the new administration keeps to its promise of strengthening our unity and inclusiveness in government, so that no section or group is left behind or left out”.

In a statement issued in Kaduna Wednesday morning, the ACF congratulated president Buhari for his victory at the polls, adding that his re-election has “signaled a new regime in our democratic process The statement, signed by the publicity secretary of the forum, Muhammed Biu noted that “the 2019 Presidential election is another milestone in the nation’s election history in view of the keen contest between the two major contenders in the persons of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR of All Progressive Congress (APC) and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“The successful conclusion of this election despite some of the ugly incidences witnessed in some parts of country in terms of ballot box snatching, killings, security challenges and other logistic problems, Nigerians have clearly demonstrated their resolve to move forward and consolidate the gains of multiparty democracy.

“Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), therefore, congratulates all Nigerians for their resilience, commitment and courage in exercising their civic responsibility amid challenges that are natural concomitant of such tasks and responsibilities.

“ACF equally congratulates President Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the just concluded 2019 Presidential election. Of equal importance, the ACF salutes the courage of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for putting up a gallantry (sic) fight with an impressive performance in the presidential elections.

“The forum calls on Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of PDP as a committed democrat, who cherishes peaceful democratic transition to accept the will of the people, concede defeat and congratulate President Buhari on his well deserved victory at the just concluded elections, especially as there are credible evidence that the elections have been generally peaceful, free and fair. Such concession on the part of the main challenger would be in the overall interest of Nigeria and place him among global democrats.”

Election: Only Nigerians Deserve To Be Praised- Ex-Governor Ayo Fayose

Former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has said that Nigerians were the ones who deserved to be praised for the courage they exhibited during the February 23rd presidential and National Assembly elections.

Fayose said this in a statement today issued by his media aide, Lere Olayinka.

He said, “Rather than a word of congratulation to President Buhari, who will be leading our country against our wish as a nation, Nigerians are the ones who deserve to be praised for their courage.”

He described the roles played by the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies in the election as ‘shameful,’ saying, “Their inordinate and inglorious desire to deprive Nigerians of a credible leadership was made manifest from the start.”

“At the barrel of the gun, today, Nigerians are cowed and captured evidently by the non-celebration of this Pyrrhic victory by anyone in Nigeria except those who hoped to benefit directly from it, which is characteristics of a thief that came in the night to deprive residents of their belongings, leaving them in anguish and nightmare.

“This election will remain in the annals of our history as a nation as a bare-faced rape on democracy.

“Rather than celebrating today, Nigerians, especially those whose loved ones were brutally murdered for a cabal to sustain their hold on the country, are moody and sad. However, in their quiet moment, they are consoled with the fact that no one can attain everlasting joy by subjecting others to perpetual sorrow.

“Definitely, the blood of those innocent Nigerians that were murdered just to actualise this inordinate ambition will speak justice on the heads of the perpetrators and beneficiaries of the killings and also speak better things for our tomorrow, having paid the supreme prize.”

The former governor added, “As already known, I am not afraid of arrest and detention. I have been persecuted and still being persecuted because of my stand on national issues and I will remain undaunted.

“Let me, therefore, commend Nigerians and tell them that they should not lose hope because help will come someday.

“As for the President, no victory songs for him, he should rather begin a soul-searching, constantly asking himself why he opted to drag Nigeria and its democracy back to the FEDECO years of 1979 and 1983 in which votes were merely allocated to candidates.”

Atiku Addresses World Press Conference, Says Presidential Election A Grand Theft

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has called the just concluded presidential elections a grand theft of the will of Nigerians.

Abubakar, who spoke during a World Press Conference at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, today, noted that democracy was a government of the people by the people only when the people’s choice prevailed.

He said, “That did not happen on Saturday, February 23, 2019. On election day, we saw the implementation of grand theft of the people’s will. In Akwa Ibom, for instance, the results showed a statistical impossibility of a 62 per cent drop in voter numbers from the 2015 elections, even where voter registration and PVC collection rates were much higher than in 2015. This is where voter suppression took place. Our party made these observations and complaints before the elections that there were plans to implement voter suppression on PDP or opposition strongholds and voter increase in APC strongholds.”

Gov Ortom Laughs: I've Fulfilled My Promise To Retire Akume

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Tuesday said he had fulfilled his promise to send his former boss, George Akume, into political retirement in the state via the 2019 elections.

Akume, the APC senatorial candidate for Benue North-West, lost to Orker Jev of the PDP.

Ortom spoke during a press conference held at the Government House, Makurdi. The governor boasted that everything he said politically concerning Akume had come to pass.

He said, “Tell me one thing I told you before that has never come to pass. Anything l tell you must come to pass because I don’t just say it. I speak from the inspiration of God. I told you that I would send Akume into retirement. You can now see it happening.

“People who play God should know that their end will be disastrous. I have read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and I know that anyone that compares himself to God can never survive.

“God is real. Psalm 24 said the earth and its fullness thereof belong to God. So, when people begin to play God, they are taking the position of God. Their end will be disastrous because you cannot share the glory of God.”

Governor Ortom said he was sure of victory in the forthcoming governorship election.

Saraki Played God, Now He Can See - Senator Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume, the senator representing Borno South at the National Assembly, has expressed satisfaction over the defeat of senate president Bukola Saraki at last Saturday's National Assembly elections.

Ndume said, “Saraki played God during his tenure as Senate President of 8th Assembly. Maybe this will remind Saraki that there is God. Once you try to play God, God will react. Saraki played God, and he has now seen how God reacted.

"Saraki took things for granted; this is the consequence of taking things for granted."

He also thanked the people of Borno for voting for candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polls, and restated the commitment of the APC administration to “continue the good works they have started”.

On the PDP's rejection of the presidential and National Assembly results, Ndume added: "I am surprised PDP has shown desperation about this election right from the beginning. There is nothing they can tell Nigerians. In a free and fair election, they can't win. PDP complained on issues; APC campaigned on issues.”
