Ladies Working For INEC R*ped During Election Duty?

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says members of its staff were abducted and r*ped during last Saturday’s elections. In a statement on Friday, Festus Okoye, INEC commissioner for information and voter education, said while the elections were generally peaceful, there was “high level of violence” in a few places in addition to “the subjugation of some of our electoral officials to threats, harassment, intimidation, assault, abduction and even r*pe.”

“The Commission condoles with the families of its ad-hoc staff who lost their lives while on this national assignment, as well as other Nigerians who died in the course of the elections,” he said.

“It also expresses its deep regrets and sympathy for all victims of this mindless violence. We stand with them in these difficult times.”

He also said the conduct of some security agencies in the elections is a matter of “serious concern”.

“While acknowledging their professionalism n the deployment of election personnel and materials in a safe and timely manner, the conduct of certain members of the security agencies in some states is a matter of serious concern to the Commission,” he said.

“This matter will be further discussed directly with the Inspector-General of Police within the ambit of the lnter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).”

How Thugs Were Unleashed On Us - Lagos Voters' Sad Stories

Residents of Okota area of Lagos State will not forget the elections of Saturday February 23, 2019 in a hurry. The day, which started as decision making day, ended up as a bloody one for many of them, with voters scampering for safety like there was war and they were shielding themselves from flying ‘missiles’.

Trouble started when some political thus on motorcycles rode into
different polling units, allegedly threatened voters voting against All Progressives Congress (APC). Voters were alleged to have been beaten, slapped and threatened. The thugs were said to have become incensed and lashed out at the voters after they discovered that most of the voters were reportedly casting votes in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Before nightfall, one of the thugs, later identified simply as Demola, had tasted the determination, will and wrath of the voters. He was attacked; heavy stones were hurled on his head, New Telegraph reports.

That he survived was nothing short of a miracle. He was said to have been rushed to a hospital by policemen. According to voters, who were at the polling units in the area, Demola led some thugs to disrupt the voting process. They burnt ballot papers and boxes.

While this mayhem was going on, no policemen or soldiers were sighted. Our correspondent went to the communities on Tuesday to find out what really transpired from some of the voters.

The atmosphere at Okota community was tense following rumours that there might be another attack on the communities. People stared at strangers with suspicion.

According to the residents, during the Saturday Presidential and National Assembly elections, thugs led by Demola, who is alleged to be a unit chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the area, attacked the voters.

Mr. Peter Idah, who was at Polling Unit 020 on Ohafia/Okota Palace Way when the political thugs invaded, said that the hood burnt election materials and turned the peaceful process into a nightmare.

He said: “We never expected that there would be problem on that day. We were all busy, casting our votes, when everything became violent. These political thugs, led by Demola, came to the place to disturb the election process. Some voters said Demola had earlier visited the unit. He left and went to the next polling unit located at the end of the street. He came to our unit and then left. When he returned again, he was with a group of thugs. They went straight to the table where ballot boxes were and carried them. They scattered the ballot papers boxes and on the ground before setting them on fire.

“When they came, everyone made way for them. Nobody knew then that they came to disrupt the election process. It was unimaginable. These thugs caused panic, forcing many voters to take to their heels. Some of the young men didn’t run far from the place; they stood afar off, watching what the thugs were doing. After the thugs destroyed everything at our polling unit, they went to the next, at the end of the street. When they left there, they went to the opposite street, Baba Ewe, where there was another polling unit and did the same thing.”

Idah recalled that after watching the drama of the political thugs for a while, the voters became angry, asking what the thugs thought they were doing. He said that the voters mobilised, gathered courage and went after the thugs.

“The voters pursued them. It was only Demola they were able to lay hands on. He was almost lynched by the angry mob, but he was rescued by the police. When the thugs stormed our polling units, only two policemen were stationed there. They were not armed. They probably, like us, expected the elections to be peaceful, which was why they didn’t come the polling unit with guns,” he added.

Another resident, Steven, lamented that the elections were peaceful until the thugs invaded the polling units.

He said: “I strongly believe that someone was planted in those polling units to monitor the voting process and know the party that was leading. The thugs came to those polling units based on information. When they realised that the voting was not swinging in their direction, they decided to disrupt it.

“As the exercise was going on, some of the voters were finding it difficult to fold the ballot papers because of its length. They also struggled to put them into the boxes. Everyone was able to see who another person voted for. Again, most of the people, who were at the polling units, were non-indigenes. They had a right to vote for whosoever they wanted. This development is trying to create bad impression among residents who had been living in peace in these communities for many years.

INEC must reschedule the elections because our votes must be counted. We will not accept intimidation from any group. Some of the residents voted for the ruling party. Most of the people I spoke with believed that Nigerians should give the sitting president a second chance.”

A private security officer in Okota, Mr. James, said: “The thugs’ aim was to scare the people. The plan was to make them too scared to come out to exercise their civil right. What happened on that Election Day was part of the intimidation that had been going on; people are being harassed on a daily basis for being non-indigenes. It is just that this one is election problem. If not, nobody would have done anything. I wish the military and police deployed in this place, could stay longer, even after the elections. We heard that some of the thugs had been threatening to carry out a reprisal on the communities. We thank God that their leader didn’t die as earlier feared. When we heard that Demola was dead, we were all scared. His colleagues may use that as an excuse to attack residents and start destroying property.”

Another resident, Madam Tina, said that she was heading to her polling unit when she saw to people running. Without waiting to find out what was happening, she also took to her heels.

She later heard that some thugs stormed polling units to burn ballot papers and boxes. She was also told that the mayhem was because some people, perceived to be Igbo, voted against APC.

Tina said: “When did it become a crime to vote for the party you like? I voted for APC during the 2015 elections, but it brought hardship. A lot of people are suffering under this government. You don’t expect Nigerians to still vote for a leader that brought hardship to the land.”

Chief Ben, who voted at Unit 017, Fasehun Street, said: “Some of the thugs told me that in 2015, APC lost the place because the late Dr. Fredrick Fasehun supported non-indigenes to vote against the ruling party. Some of the thugs I met on the way to the polling unit as I was telling people I know that they should vote for their choice, threatened that if the residents refused to vote for APC, nobody would be allowed to vote. I challenged them, that they should not say so. One of them insulted and threatened to slap me. I believe those boys were acting out a script given to them by their paymasters. Nobody can intimidate me in this Lagos State. I’m a Nigerian.”

Reacting to the matter, the National Coordinator of the Network on Police Reforms in Nigeria (NOPRIN), Okechukwu Nwanguma, said: “We always focus on political thugs without asking questions about or going after the sponsors of thuggery and electoral violence.

“Having identified the thugs who invaded polling stations in Okota, Lagos, chased away voters and INEC officials and burnt electoral materials, INEC and security agents have a duty to also arrest their sponsors and prosecute them. Residents of Okota have identified the sponsor of the violence as a woman whose name they gave as Mrs Olowoyo. She is the leader who mobilised all these thugs.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, said that some arrests had been made. He disclosed that aside from Okota, arrests were also made at Shomolu. He added that Okota and Shomolu areas of Lagos had the largest number of arrests, with nine suspects each.

Muazu, who described the exercise generally as peaceful, said measures had been put in place to forestall any repeat of such incident in the governorship election.

He said: “The election in almost every part of Lagos was calm. However, there were disruptions in some areas. The important was at Okota, where polling units were attacked. Some hoodlums went there when the elections were ongoing and disrupted the process. However, no life was lost in the violence. We heard the falsehood that people were killed but we went there and did not see any corpse. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Palace Way Police Station did not see anyone that was killed. In Okota, nine suspects were arrested.

"They came on motorcycles and 10 of these were recovered. Okota is a very large area and we cannot deploy armed policemen to polling units. The armed policemen were far off. That was why the hoodlums were able to strike and fled before armed policemen could get there. It is indeed a breach of the restriction order. I wonder where they came from but the case is under investigation and we will find out where they came from.”

It was learnt that the DPO of the Ago Palace Way Police Divisional Headquarters, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Oyin Frances Adamu, and the station’s Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), a Superintendent of Police (SP), Oladimeji Olatunji, were queried over their alleged failure to prevent the violence which erupted in Okota during the elections.

Adamu and Olatunji were given 24 hours to explain why disciplinary actions should not be taken against them for failing to protect INEC officials and electoral materials.

It was also learnt that aside failing to handle the security situation, the two police officers allegedly attempted to divert the attention of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 2, David Folawiyo, and Muazu, from doing an on-the-spot assessment of the extent of damage in the area. Muazu ordered the Area Commander, Olasoji Akinbayo, to issue the two officers queries for allowing hoodlums to wreak havoc on the area.

Okorocha Reacts To His Suspension, Replies Oshiomhole

Rochas Okorocha, governor of Imo state, has accused national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, of plotting to destroy the ruling party with his actions.

Okorocha was reacting to his suspension by the party.

The NWC had suspended Okorocha and Ibikunle Amosun, governor of Ogun state, over allegations of “anti-party activities”.

The duo fell out with the leadership of the APC after failing to secure the gubernatorial tickets of the ruling party for their preferred candidates.

In a statement on Friday, Okorocha accused the national chairman of setting out to destroy the APC in the south east, noting that all states governed by the ruling party in the region are embroiled in crises due to the “fraudulent manner” he conducted the party’s primaries.

The statement, issued by Sam Onwuemeodo, his spokesman read: “Adams Oshiomhole was determined right from the outset to destroy APC in the south-east and unknown to party chieftains from the zone who had genuinely supported his chairmanship.

“He is playing the politics of 2023 in 2019 and in playing it he has thrown caution to the wind. In all the south-east states, there are crises and all arising from the fraudulent manner he conducted the primaries.

“In 2015, Governor Okorocha had joined the merger that gave birth to APC at the risk of his second tenure and was called all sorts of unprintable names.

“Yet, he won the governorship election, delivered 24 out of the 27 members of the House of Assembly for APC, two House of Representatives members and one Senator.

“In 2019, Oshiomhole felt that such a man should be treated with disdain. He handed over the governorship ticket of the Party to Hope Uzodinma who has never resigned his membership of the PDP on the floor of the Senate like others did and giving all kinds of flimsy excuses.

“And if Oshiomhole had meant well for APC and Imo people in particular, would he have given the ticket of the Party to a man facing five corruption charges and having travel ban slammed on him, to be the party’s Candidate?”

Okorocha berated the national chairman for his “lack of wisdom” while alleging that Oshiomhole was trying to fulfill his own end of a deal that involved giving out the party’s ticket to “non-deserving elements.”

“In the February 23, 2019 Presidential and National Assembly election, Governor Okorocha won in ten, out of the twelve local government areas in Orlu zone to emerge winner for Imo West Senatorial District,” he said.

“He also delivered four House of Representatives Candidates on the platforms of APC and AA respectively, with one Senate Seat and two House of Representatives Seats outstanding.

“And when the APC members across the nation are still celebrating the success of the party in the Presidential and National Assembly elections, Oshiomhole in his wisdom or lack of it, felt that the best action in the circumstance was to suspend two governors who did well in the election, even when he played safe in 2015 and 2019 in Edo State without any known pressure.

“Again, Oshiomhole coming with the purported expulsion this time was only acting out of the fear that God in his infinite Mercy could give Governor Okorocha a role to play in the Senate, in the overall interest of the nation.

“The truth is that Oshiomhole is only labouring in vain to play his own part of the deal that warranted his giving out the tickets of the party to non-deserving elements like in the case of Imo. Finally, APC especially in the Southeast and in Imo in particular will outlive Oshiomhole.”

Photo: Deji Adeyanju Regains FREEDOM

Adeyanju was freed from Kano Central Prison today. His freedom comes nearly two weeks after the Kano State High Court granted the activist bail.

Mr Adeyanju’s arrest on December 13 on allegations of murder has drawn nationwide attention.

The arrest itself came after the activist had spent a week in prison between late November and early December 2018. He was leading a protest against alleged police bias ahead of the general elections when he was arrested and accused of defamation against senior security chiefs.

His December 13 arrest was linked to a homicide case that was concluded in 2009.
Although Mr Adeyanju was named in the murder trial, he was discharged and acquitted after four years of prosecution in 2009.

Sanwo-Olu, Mc Oluomo Meet With Igbos In Lagos

Following heightened fears and possible attack on non-indigenes in Lagos, All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in the state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and a chieftain of National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly called MC Oluomo, yesterday, met with the leadership of Igbo at different locations to assure them of safety in the state.

Sanwo-Olu, in company of his running-mate, Dr. Femi Hamzat, led a delegation to Computer Village, Ikeja, which is highly dominated by Igbo traders, and reassured them of safety, due to the ugly incident that occurred last Saturday at Ago Palace Way.

He also promised to protect their interest if elected into office on March 9, 2019, governorship poll. Sanwo-Olu, who used the opportunity to canvass for their (Igbo) votes and support, also reassured them of running an inclusive administration, if elected.

Prince Nwankeze, leader of Ndigbo Computer Village traders, while responding, promised to ensure Ndigbo voted for Sanwo-Olu and other APC candidates.

“We also urge you to fulfill your promise to us and protect our interest in the state,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, MC Oluomo also convened a peace meeting between Yoruba and Ndigbo at Oshodi where a peace accord was said to have been endorsed by the two ethnic groups, who were said to have been living in harmony and friendship for ages.

It was gathered that MC Oluomo used the opportunity to dissociate his members’ involvement from the alleged attack and threat to Igbo living in Lagos.

Here's The Man Who'll Likely Be The New Senate President

Following the defeat of Senate president Bukola Saraki, the race for presidency of the 9th senate, to be inaugurated in June, has already started. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured 64 of the 95 seats announced so far, with the PDP having 40.

The top contender for that position of senate president has to be Ahmad Lawan,
senator representing Yobe north senatorial district. He was believed to have been favoured for the position by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015. He was re-elected by his constituents on Saturday and is one of the ranking APC senators.

Four years ago, the APC caucus in the senate was divided over the leadership of the national assembly. In an attempt to broker peace between the two APC factions, the president had summoned an emergency meeting at the International Conference Centre (ICC). While Lawan and his supporters were there, Bukoal Saraki teamed up with the PDP to become the nation’s No. 3 citizen.

In the end, Lawan was compensated with the position of senate majority leader.

HE REMAINED LOYAL TO THE APC
Despite his hopes getting shattered, Lawan stayed with the APC even when the party was hit with wave of defections. On one occasion, APC lost 14 senators with Saraki announcing his exit shortly after.

Amid the defection storm, Lawan remained there to lead his colleagues and defend the APC. He defended the president for not signing the electoral act amendment bill and opposed those who contemplated impeaching the president.

ONE OF THE LONGEST SERVING LEGISLATORS
Lawan has been a member of the national assembly since the return of democracy in 1999, together with David Mark and Nicholas Mutu.

He was first elected a member of the house of representatives where he chaired the committees on education and agriculture at different times. After eight years in the lower legislative chamber, Lawan took a shot at the senate in 2007 and was elected to represent Yobe north district, a position he has held ever since.

He is unarguably one of the most experienced APC lawmaker returning to the 9th senate, having been at the two chambers.

STRONG ACADEMIC RECORDS
The 60-year-old is a graduate of the University of Maiduguri where he read geography. He also has a postgraduate diploma in land survey, an MSc and PhD in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS), all from the University of Cranfield, United Kingdom.

TINUBU’S ADMIRATION FOR HIM
At a recent meeting of some APC leaders in Ibadan, Oyo state, Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the APC, spoke glowingly of Lawan. He defended the party’s choice of him as senate president in 2015, praising his continued loyalty to the party.

“Senator Lawan... you are a great example of a very consistent and intellectually resourceful leader that we have in this country,” he said.

“We saw in him, these leadership traits and the qualities we wanted in the Senate President. We know you are qualified and competent to be, that you would have led the most important arm of our government more effectively but the political prostitutes and their robbers and their collaborators denied you of it because of selfishness and selfish aggrandisement.

“But instead of fleeing, you remained constant and consistent, seeing this institution as a place for truly lawmaking that we the people and you have remained consistent and constant ever since on a progressive stand. Thank you.”

LAWAN GETTING SET?
Shortly after he won reelection bid, the senator the APC is not only confident of producing the next senate president but that such senate leadership will mend the broken ties between the legislature and the executive.

“This time, it will not be the kind of National Assembly that will betray the trust of Nigerians; the national assembly will support Mr President to meet the needs of Nigerians,” he had said.

“The time for unnecessary bickering and opposition has come to an end; we cannot afford to waste more time on unnecessary politics and denying the people of Nigeria the much needed development. The national assembly will support and cooperate with the president to effectively serve the interest of Nigerians.”

Sounds like he already has his plans all figured out, according to The Cable, and just waiting for the big moment.

Story of Lady Who Gave Birth to Twins After Doctors Insisted She Wasn't Pregnant

A Nigerian doctor who has been identified simply as Dr Maxvayshia on social media, has shared the amazing testimony of how his cousin recently welcomed a set of twins after several doctors insisted she wasn't pregnant.

According to Dr Maxvayshia who is a graduate of the University of Benin, some doctors even told his cousin that she was mentally unstable when she kept insisting she was pregnant.

However, she finally gave birth to a set of wins. Read the amazing story:

"So, my cousin missed her period 9 months ago but pregnancy tests read negative all along, all scans done revealed absolutely nothing, even though her abdomen was progressively enlarging and has d size of a typical 9 month gestation.

"14 different Consultants and Professors in over 10 different hospitals between Abuja, Port Harcourt and Lagos talked to her althrough 9 months and convinced her that she couldn't be pregnant but an abdominal tumour is suspected for which she is to be investigated.

"She was very sure she was pregnant but the counselling of the Obstetricians got her very confused as she was experiencing all the classical symptoms of pregnancy.

"Repeated the scan on the 9th month, still nothing revealed. Even though she was very heavy. She became paranoid and psychiatric evaluation was suggested. She opted out and continued wandering in her confusion, with encouragement from friends and family.

"She recently suddenly went into Labour and was delivered of a set of female non-identical twins through vaginal delivery by a midwife who happened to be there at the time.

"This challenges everything I know as a Doctor and makes me question everything again. If events of the present times and unbelievable miracles do not make you question things you already know and probe deeper in reflection in a bid to know more, then you should reassess yourself."

Okorocha, Amosun Suspended By APC Headquarters

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday suspended governors Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun and Rochas Okorocha of Imo states.

The NWC of the party further recommended the expulsion of the duo from the party for brazen anti-party activities. Both governors are supporting different candidates for the governorship election in their states.

Okorocha, who won a Senate seat as APC candidate, is
backing his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu campaigning for Imo governor as candidate of Action Alliance.

Amosun, who also won a Senate seat as APC senator last week, is also supporting a member of the House of Representatives, Abdulkadir Akinlade, as governor as a member of the Allied Peoples Movement.

In Imo, APC has Senator Hope Uzodinma as its governorship candidate. Prince Dapo Abiodun is the candidate in Ogun.

Amosun was roundly criticised in February when he flooded an APC presidential rally in Abeokuta with APM supporters. The incident almost went awry as the APM mob nearly stoned President Muhammadu Buhari.
