Panic As Fire Guts Popular Hotel In Port Harcourt

There was panic at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Port Harcourt GRA, Phase 2, on Tuesday, as fire engulfed some rooms on the first floor. It was gathered that the fire, which started in one of the rooms, forced occupants of other rooms to rush out of the premises, while other guests, who parked their vehicles on the premises, hurriedly drove them out.

Sources said the inferno was extinguished by workers in the hotel, who battled for about 10 minutes before the arrival of operatives of the Rivers State Fire Service.

There was, however, no human casualty, but property worth millions of naira was destroyed by the inferno.

The Human Resources Consultant to the hotel, Paul Odousoro, told The Punc that the cause of the fire was still unknown, adding that the occupant of the room where it started was not around when the inferno began.
He said, “One of the hotel’s housekeepers in the corridor of the first floor noticed heavy smoke coming out of that particular room that got burnt. The room was occupied by a customer, but the customer had gone to work when the fire started.

“The housekeeper, who first noticed it, raised the alarm and immediately the fire alarm was activated and all guests were taken to the muster point. When everyone was safely at the muster point, the process of extinguishing out the fire began.”

Imagine How This Electricity Worker Was Assaulted In Lagos

A middle-aged man, Abiodun Makinde, has been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly beating up a worker of a power distribution company, Ikeja Electric, Oluwaseun Onate, while performing his duties on Aberuagaba Street in the Oshodi area of the state.

It was gathered that Onate was effecting a disconnection order on customers who defaulted in the payment of their bills when Makinde reportedly attacked him.

Makinde, who was said to have fled the scene of the attack, was later arrested at his hideout following an organised search by operatives of the command.

Following his arrest, Makinde was arraigned before the Ogba Magistrates’ Court on two counts of assault and breach of peace.

While he pleaded not guilty to the charges, the presiding magistrate, Mrs Dan Oni, granted him bail and ordered that he should be remanded in the Kirikiri Prison until the bail conditions were met.

The case was thereafter adjourned till March 14, 2019, for further hearing.

Similarly, 22-year-old Rotimi Bamigbade has been remanded in prison for allegedly conniving with four others to attack another Ikeja Electric worker.

It was learnt that Bamigbade and four others still at large had on February 18, 2019, allegedly used bottles and sticks to physically assault and dispossess an Ikeja Electric linesman, Oluwatoyo David, of his personal property at Ajasa Command in the Ipaja area of the state.

Bamigbade was arraigned before Mrs. A.A. Adetunji, sitting at Court 14, Ogba Magistrates’ Court, on five counts bordering on conspiracy, breach of peace, obstruction of official duty, assault occasioning harm and stealing.

He pleaded guilty to all the charges except stealing and was remanded in the Ikoyi Prison, while the case was adjourned till Monday, March 18, 2019, for further hearing.

Also arrested for similar offences were Kazeem Owoleye, who allegedly assaulted two workers of the IE; Ohere Leonard and Paul Emmanuel, on Rilwan Lawal Street in the Lowa Estate area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Owoleye was arraigned before Mrs T. A. Azeez of the Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court 1 on two counts.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was subsequently granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties. He was, however, remanded in the Kirikiri Prison pending the perfection of his bail conditions.

The Head, Corporate Communications, Ikeja Electric, Felix Ofulue, said the company had sought redress in the courts to curtail the incessant assault on its workers and to serve as a deterrent to others who might want to commit similar offences in the future.

Photos: R Kelly Breaks Down In First Interview… Begs All To Believe He Is Innocent

R. Kelly was distraught talking about the recent allegations against him and pleading for people to believe he's innocent ... shouting, "I'm fighting for my f***ing life!"

Kelly sat down with Gayle King Tuesday in his first interview since he was arrested on 10 counts of aggravated s-xual abuse. King presses Kelly on the recent allegations, and clearly hits a soft spot when asked if Kelly has ever held women against their will.

The singer explodes, looking directly into the camera and urging viewers to believe it's all lies. Kelly points to his past -- cases in which he's been accused of inappropriate s-xual acts -- as proof he'd never commit a crime again, knowing all eyes were on him.

At one point, the singer begins to sob…  "I'm fighting for my f***ing life!" The full interview will air this morning on "CBS This Morning."

Girl Reunites With Family 5 Years After Going Missing

The joy of the family of Ikimot Awojoju knows no bounds as she has been reunited with her family in the Oyingbo area of Lagos, five years after she went missing.

It was gathered that Ikimot lived with her guardian after her mother, Faidat Awojoju, passed away.

She reportedly went missing on her way back from school on July 23, 2014. Ikimot’s guardian, Ajoke Abass, said she sold her valuables to raise the money needed to search for her but all efforts to find her proved abortive.

Abass told Punch Metro that after two years, she stopped searching but kept on praying for the safe return of the girl.

The Kwara State indigene said Ikimot’s return was an indication that her prayers were answered as everyone had assumed that she was dead.
The mother of four said, “Ikimot’s mother was an area sister to me and we took each other as family members. She already had a child before she got pregnant with Ikimot. The man responsible was not ready to accept the pregnancy and she wanted to abort it. I advised her against it and stood by her throughout the course of the pregnancy until she put to bed.
“I was the one looking after the child, while she was going about her business, because I am self-employed. When Ikimot clocked two years, her father came to apologise and promised to assume responsibility for the child’s upkeep, but he did not keep to his promise after her mother died.

“Ikimot was three when her mother died in 2011 and none of her family members was ready to take over the responsibility of taking care of her and her brother, so, I decided to take it up since I was the one taking care of her before and I was the one that encouraged her mother not to abort the pregnancy; Ikimot was in my custody and I took her older brother to one of my brothers, who is a cleric, to help me train him in the Islamic way.
“On the day that Ikimot went missing, she did not come back from school at the usual time and after some time, I told my children to go and check her in the school. They returned to say that they could not find her. I went to different police stations in search of her.

“I sold all I had to raise the money needed to conduct the search for her. After two years, my husband told me to stop searching and that I should just keep praying for her. And anytime my heart reached out to her, I would give alms to the poor on her behalf.”
Abass said when Ikimot returned, she could not recognise her initially, adding that the girl helped the police to arrest her captor.

“On Tuesday, February 26, 2019, I was outside the house playing with my children, when one of my neighbours called my attention to a girl that stood afar off. She asked if I recognised her and I said no, but the girl was smiling at me. My neighbour asked the girl if she knew me and she replied that she used to live with me.

“I took a second look at her and that was when I was flooded with memories of what she looked like. She arrived around 10pm and people were with us till midnight.

When I took her into the room, she noted that I had changed the position of the bed, which really confirmed that she was the one, but she no longer understood Yoruba as she could only speak pidgin English and Igbo.

“In the morning, I took her to the Denton Police Station and I explained everything to the officers there. They took her statement and she kept on repeating an address as the residence of her abductor. We went with the police to the address and the woman was arrested.

“At first, the woman claimed that she was Ikimot’s mother, but when she was asked to provide her childhood pictures, she said she did not have any. She was also unable to produce her birth certificate and the girl insisted that she was not her mother.

“I was asked to bring everything that could prove that she was mine and the police also requested that her father must come to the station to corroborate the girl’s statement, which he did. When he came, the girl also recognised him as her father but the woman kept on insisting that she was the mother of the child.” THANK YOU JESUS.

Peter Andre Defends Michael Jackson Amid S-x Abuse Allegations: 'Don't Ban His Music'

Peter Andre has controversially claimed that Michael Jackson's music shouldn't be banned, despite sex abuse allegations.

The late Thriller singer is the subject of new documentary, Leaving Neverland, which will air on Channel 4 on Wednesday, and documents abuse allegations made by his two alleged victims, James Safechuck and Wade Robson.

However, despite scandalous accusations about the singer's conduct with minors, Peter took to his new! magazine column to remind fans he was acquitted of any wrongdoing in 2005.

The dad-of-four said: "There's a new Michael Jackson documentary on this week and it has caused a lot of controversy about sexual abuse.

"First and foremost what I will say is we have to rely on the justice system and we mustn't forget that he was acquitted of not just one, but all child molestation charges during his trial in 2005."

The disgraced star's music has now been banned from BBC Radio 2 ahead of the documentary hitting screens.

The Mysterious Girl singer went on to claim that if Jackson is ever proven to be guilty then "it's absolutely terrible".

However, he did not agree with banning the King of Pop from the airwaves.

"You can't just stop listening to an artist's music due to accusations alone.

"And let's not foget some of his songs weren't even written by him," he went on.

Leaving Neverland contains explosive allegations of child abuse against the King Of Pop, who died in 2009, and has sparked outraged among some of Jackson's most ardent fans.

Peter added that fans must also remember the singer isn't here to "defend himself" and sympathised with his family.

Wednesday Inspiration! Homeless, Drop Out School Boy Who Begs For Food Becomes A Millionaire At 21

A homeless school dropout living with heroin addicts became a self-made millionaire in just four years.

Harry Sanders, 21, from Melbourne, left school to chase his dream of turning his SEO (search engine optimisation) agency, Studiohawk, into a roaring success.

He was just 14 when his father's boat licensing firm suffered a huge loss in customers after a hugely successful SEO agency took some of its business.

After that, Harry decided to immerse himself in the industry to try save his dad's firm from the brink - and to change his own fortunes.

But the then teenager fell on hard times as he struggled to make ends meet, reports Mail Online.

He claims he spent all his time and money on his own business - and when his parents could no longer help him out - he found himself without a roof over his head.

As Harry's fortunes started to nosedive, he said the local housing authorities assigned him a home with heroin users.

He then ended up couch surfing and sleeping under a bridge.

Harry said he would scavenge food from nearby restaurants while pouring his heart and soul into the business in a desperate bid to keep his dream alive.

Eventually, after hitting what he describes as "rock bottom", Harry's fortunes began to change.

He said he relentlessly cold called businesses in a desperate attempt to "get customers in the door".
He managed to tempt a small number of businesses to work with him.

A few customers then became a lot, as Harry's SEO skills turned his life around.

He picked up freelance work and his dad's business also swelled with customers thanks to the youngster's web expertise.

He told Mail Online: "I turned my life around by sheer determination, and embraced change.

Honestly the biggest thing that made the change for me was just saying yes.

"Putting up my hand to do things, scary things that I didn't want to do but did because I knew they were good for the business. Take every good opportunity you can.

"The biggest difference between those who are successful and those who aren't isn't intelligence, it's people's willing to just start and fail along the way."

Harry gained over 100 new clients last year and now runs a business with over 10 employees.

And he believes his projected revenue for 2019 is a staggering $1.3million.

The young man has also been named on the board of the Australian Web Industry Association.

Who Takes Over Saraki's Seat? A Big Upset Coming

To what extent can former governors in the Senate influence the choice of who becomes President of the 9th Senate? The elected former governors in the upper chamber are plotting to influence who will be principal officers when the Ninth Assembly is inaugurated in June.

powerful former governors, taking advantage of their upscale status, are planning to “play a major role” in who takes over from Senate President Bukola Saraki. How will it happen?

Saraki, a two-time senator and former Kwara State governor, lost his bid to return to the Red Chamber on February 23. He lost the Kwara Central Senatorial seat to his All Progressives Congress (APC) challenger, Yahaya Ibrahim Oloriegbe. The former Kwara State helmsman was elected President in 2015.

Sources told The Nation that the former governors had been meeting in Abuja to perfect their plans. One of the meetings was said to have been held last Sunday in the Asokoro, Abuja home of one of the ex-governors.

Sixteen former governors have been elected into the Ninth Senate. Ten of them are ranking senators, having either been former members of the House of Representatives or senators. The remaining six will have to cut their teeth in lawmaking.

Being a ranking senator will pave the way for a senator to vie for any position of leadership in the Senate.

The former governors are: Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu); outgoing Borno State Governor Ibrahim Shettima; outgoing Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al Makura; outgoing Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam; former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shakarau; outgoing Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun; outgoing Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha; former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam and former Nasarawa State Governor; Abdullahi Adamu.

Others are: former Gombe State Governor Mohammed Danjuma Goje; former Abia State governors Orji Uzor Kalu and Theodore Orji; former Kano State Governor Kabiru Gaya; former Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Wamakko; outgoing Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari and former Kebbi State Governor Adamu Aliero.

A source privy to the plan of the ex-governors described them as “a formidable bloc”. The source said their alleged plot to determine the flow of issues in the Senate should not be taken lightly.

“When I confronted one of them, he merely told me they were meeting to rub minds on how to be relevant in the affairs of the Ninth Senate. I know it is more than just to be relevant in the Senate. There is more to it. You know that the issue of who takes over from Saraki is at stake, going forward,” the source said, pleading not to be named.

Asked how far the former governors can go to cause upset in the election of the Senate President, he insisted that “these are not people you take for granted, especially when it is obvious that nobody is elected to play second fiddle in the Senate”.

The source said that he was also aware that zonal meetings of senators-elect were being held to articulate how to push the interests of zones in sharing leadership positions in the Senate.

No zones, he said, don't want to be left out “no matter the position of parties.”

“For instance, I know that the Southeast and Southsouth senators-elect have been meeting to lobby for Senate President with the understanding that President Muhammadu Buhari is from the North, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is from the Southwest, acting Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Tanko Mohammed, is also from the North,” the source said.

The source added: "The way and manner the All Progressives Congress (APC), which will form the majority party in the Senate, handles the allocation of leadership positions will go a long way to determine the face of the Ninth Senate.”

Shock As Father Drugs & R*pes His Own Daughter In Lagos

The Ikeja Special Offences Court yesterday heard how a 35-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Emmanuel Idoko, usually drugged his 12-year-old daughter before sleeping with her.

The court was told that he laced the girl’s drink with drug to make her sleepy before having carnal knowledge of her at their 35, Akewusola Street, Oworonsoki, Lagos home.

A witness, Dr Alagbe Oyedeji, of the Mirabel Centre, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, said the girl told him under examination how her father gave her soft drinks and "I will fall asleep."

The doctor was testifying in the charge preferred against Idoko for the alleged s*xual assault of his daughter. He told Justice Sybil Nwaka that she came on referral to Mirabel by the Divisional Police Officer at Ketu Police Station on November 28, 2017.

Led in evidence by the prosecutor, A. O. Alagbe, of Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Oyedeji said the minor told him that her ordeal started in 2016 after she and her younger brother moved in with their father after their parents separated.

“The victim told me that her father came home from work one day and told her that he had heard rumours that she was no longer a virgin, and that he wanted to examine her by inserting his fingers into her private parts to see whether she was still a virgin or not.

“She said she became reluctant after her father told her that he wanted to use his manhood to test her virginity. When she refused, he beat her severely. He later became very nice and every night after he returned from work, he would give her soft drinks, then she would fall asleep and he would have his way.”

Oyedeji said when the minor started sleeping in school, her class teacher asked her what happened and the girl narrated what her father had been doing to her.

The teacher, he said, reported the matter to the Ketu Police Station and the defendant was arrested.

“Upon examination of the victim’s private parts, it was discovered that it was reddened. Her urethra was also reddened. I also discovered that her anal opening (anus) was loosened. There were also areas of laceration around the private parts and thighs. The injuries she sustained in her private parts and thighs showed recent and previous forceful penetration,” the doctor said.

He said the test he conducted on the minor showed that she had been physically and s*xually abused.

Under cross-examination by the defence counsel, Adeyemi Adegbite, Oyedeji insisted the defendant penetrated his daughter’s private parts with his fingers. Justice Nwaka adjourned till April 3.

INEC Budgets N1.9bn To Defend Buhari, Others

The Independent National Electoral Commission is expected to spend over N1.9bn on legal fees and related matters as aggrieved candidates challenge the outcomes of various elections in court.

Atiku, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, and others have already challenged the result of the elections in court.

The information is contained in INEC’s 2019 Election Project Plan.

The document reads in part, “N1, 796, 547, 500.00. Professional fees and expenses for external solicitors to be engaged by the commission to represent it at the tribunals and appeals; honorarium for legal officers that represent the commission at election petitions and appeals.

“Analysis of fees: Governorship petition at N4.5m X 20; senatorial petition at N3m X 45; House of Reps atN2.7m X105; state House of Assembly N1.350m X 244. Honorarium to in-house lawyers is seven per cent of fees payable to external solicitors.”

Of the sum, N6m was spent on pre-election cases which are disputes that arose from the conduct of party primaries. The commission will also spend a separate N26.5m on monitoring the hearing of election petitions and appeals across the 36 states and the FCT.

The sum will cover duty tour allowance and transport costs for the monitors at the hearing of election petitions and appeals as well as the compilation and printing of reports of petitions and appeals.

The electoral umpire also budgeted a separate N99.5m for the compilation and production of updated electoral legal framework including the code of conduct for external lawyers and code of conduct for staff.

A separate N25m will be spent on the prosecution of electoral offenders.

Yakubu had revealed in January that the commission battled 1,134 legal cases arising from election disputes in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

He added, “In the course of discharging our responsibilities, no public institution in Nigeria is subjected to more litigation than INEC. Over the last two years (2016 and 2017), the commission has been involved in 454 court cases in addition to 680 cases determined by the Election Petitions Tribunals arising from the outcome of the 2015 general elections, making a total of 1,134 cases so far.”

In another forum, Yakubu said no government agency in the country had been taken to court more than INEC because every aggrieved candidate would join the commission in almost every suit.

Lagos Should Be Liberated From 'godfather', says group

A coalition of political parties and civil society organisations, called the Free Lagos Orange Movement, has urged the electorate in Lagos to liberate the state from bondage in Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.

At a press conference yesterday, the spokesperson, Mark Adebayo, said the governorship election presented the best opportunity to liberate Lagosians from the grip of a ‘godfather’.

He alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had set in motion the machinery to rig the election. He, therefore, urged residents of the state to be at alert and give no room for anyone or party to short-change them.

He said, “Information at our disposal is that the leader of the All Progressives Congress has ordered his party members in the state executive council to ensure that his candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, emerges against all odds on Saturday.

“We need to be vigilant so that these desperados do not endanger our nascent democracy through their brigandage and acts inimical to free, fair and peaceful election.”

The group urged the Lagos State Commissioner of Police (Zubairu Mu’azu) not to engage in any act that will compromise professionalism in their operation. “We implore the security agencies to maintain neutrality before, during and after the election.”
