INEC Warns: Getting highest number of votes not enough to win governorship election

Getting the highest number of votes in a state is not enough to declare a governorship candidate winner, the Independent National Electoral Commission has said.

To be declared winner, a governorship candidate must not only get the highest number of votes, he must also win at least one-quarter of total votes cast in two-thirds of all the LGAs in the state.

This is contained in the guidelines for the governorship election posted by INEC on its website. The commission said the collation officer for a state can only return as winner, any candidate who “(i) has the majority of votes cast at the election; (and) (ii) has not less than one quarter of the votes cast at the election in each of at least two-thirds of all the LGAs in the state.”

The guidelines stated that “Where no candidate meets the requirements of the majority of votes cast and the electoral two-thirds, as provided in 41b (i) and (ii) above, a run-off election will be organised by the commission within 21 days in line with the provisions of Section 179 (2) to (5) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.”

In case of cancelled votes, the guidelines stated that the returning officer should not declare any candidate winner if the margin between the two leading candidates is less than the number of registered voters at the polling unit or units where votes were cancelled or did not hold at all. The commission stated that in line with sections 26 and 53 of the Electoral Act, a winner would only be declared after a fresh poll has been conducted at the polling unit(s) where votes were cancelled or did not hold at all.

Buhari Running Govt. With No Direction – Financial Times

The Financial Times of London says President Muhammadu Buhari has been running a government that lacks a clear direction in the last four years. The newspaper, therefore, called on the President to see his re-election as an opportunity to do the right thing.

The FT said this in its editorial which has been read and shared around the world.

It said there was no clear economic policy like that of Rwanda and Ethiopia. It read in part, “With his renewed mandate, it is now Mr Buhari’s task to rebuild faith by running a dynamic and successful administration and by building the institutions that can lay firmer foundations than in his previous term.

“The omens from his first four years in office are not good. During that time, the former military leader ran a lacklustre administration with no obvious sense of direction. There was no coherent economic strategy of the sort being attempted by the likes of Ethiopia, Rwanda or West African neighbours Ghana and Senegal to produce the rapid growth needed to haul tens of millions of people out of poverty. It is an indictment of its leadership — both military and democratic — that the continent’s biggest oil producer should have more people living in absolute poverty than any other country in the world.”

FT advised Buhari to appoint more technocrats in his second term who can help turn things around. The newspaper also said the anti-corruption war must be more holistic and less selective.

FLASH! Hoodlums Set Ballot Boxes, Card Readers On Fire

Suspected hoodlums have set ablaze all electoral materials, including ballot boxes and card readers on fire, at Mbalom ward in Gwer east local government area of Benue state.

According to a witness, the hoodlums broke into RCM Primary School, Aya, where the electoral materials were kept, firing shots in the air before setting the materials on fire.

Ngunan Yongo, the electoral officer for the local government area, confirmed the incident to NAN. The EO said the materials were yet to be distributed to polling units in the ward when the attack occurred. “The entire materials were burnt,” she lamented.

However, no official of the commission including ad hoc staff was hurt. She explained that a final decision over the conduct of the elections in the area would be communicated later.

Thaddeus Ujah, a senior official of the commission, also confirmed the early morning attack.

Right now I can’t say anything, I am overwhelmed; we were not expecting anything of that nature. I am short of words. I can’t see some of my people, they ran into the bush, some of them got injured. For me, the most important thing to me now is to get those people and take them back”.
Ujah said he was posted newly in the area and could not ascertain the exact number of ad hoc staff, who are missing until he takes a roll call.

APC Political Thugs Clash In Lagos; Many Injured, Two Killed

Two persons were feared dead on Thursday while many others were injured as hoodlums clashed in Oto Awori, Ijanikin area of Lagos. The violent clash, which started around 1pm in the community and continued until about 5 pm, was between loyalists of the APC State House of Assembly Candidate for Ojo Constituency II, Alhaji Suleiman Raji a.k.a. Jafo and those of former Chairman Oto Awori LCDA, Kayode Robert a.k.a. Bibire.

It was gathered that the notorious hoodlums vandalised no fewer than 35 vehicles and looted shops while they blocked the expressway for several hours.

Already, armed policemen and soldiers have been deployed to the community to prevent any reprisals, while the two traditional rulers-Oni Ijanikin and Oloto of Oto-have addressed the parties and other subjects on the need for a violence-free election.

According to residents, trouble started after Raji, who doubles as Chairman ANACOWA Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association, an affiliate of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), led his supporters to campaign at Oto Owori.

The Nation gathered that Raji’s campaign train, which had hundreds of motorcyclists from Ojo, had gone to the palace of the Oni Ijanikin and from there went to pay homage to the Oloto of Oto.

They were however shut out of the palace by angry supporters of Robert, who felt that their godfather and son was denied a chance at the Lagos House of Assembly because of Raji and had earlier warned that the candidate should not come to the community to campaign.

A mechanic, Taiye Akanbi, said that the youths’ action was followed by sporadic gunshots from thugs on the entourage of the candidate, which was reciprocated by those loyal to the former LCDA chairman.

“What followed were gunshots fired by those on the campaign train of Jafo. Bibire’s boys returned the fire. The first person that was killed was matcheted by Jafo’s boys,” he said.

Another resident, Sesan Adedayo, alleged that a young man was beaten to death, adding that those injured were rushed to a hospital at Cele Bus Stop, Ijanikin.

He said the campaigners imported motorcyclists and hoodlums from Ojo to cause mayhem, adding that they were armed with cutlasses, broken bottles and knives which they used freely.

Condemning the incident, the Oloto of Oto, Oba Josiah Olarewaju Ilemobade, said he was still shocked by the show of power exhibited by the hoodlums.

Ilemobade, who spoke through the Balogun of Ato Awori, Chief Rufus Fatogun, accused Jafo of failing to call his supporters to order despite being a palace chief.

He said Jafo’s action appeared premeditated, going by the hoodlums on his train and the arms they carried.

“His boys damaged well over 35 vehicles, including three parked in front of the palace. One person was severely injured but, thank God, no one died in the fracas.

“It was not a campaign, because no party leader was among those who came; only members of Okada Riders and Owners Association. He did the same thing during the primary election last year. He brought his boys to beat up party delegates, and that was how he emerged the party’s candidate.

“With the election... he has come to destroy the work our youths have done for APC. The Oba went round in the morning to appeal to the youths not to allow the incident dampen their morale.

“The police did not help matters at all. It took them over an hour to get to the palace which is less than five minutes away from the station. And when they eventually arrived, they started firing indiscriminately. It was soldiers that brought normalcy to the area,” he said.

Election Battle: Military jets, soldiers take over Rivers, Others

There was palpable panic among residents in some key states of the country on Friday as the Nigerian Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance jets began air patrols over perceived flashpoints in the North-East, Kwara, Adamawa and Rivers states.

The patrol was going on just as soldiers and policemen deployed for the elections took over the streets and some strategic locations in Rivers, Delta, Adamawa, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom states ahead of the governorship and Houses of Assembly elections today.

Residents and indigenes of Adamawa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Kwara complained of intimidation by security forces patrolling parts of their states.

In Adamawa, The Punch noticed the movement of security vans from Yola to other parts of the state on Friday morning.

Some of the indigenes who spoke to one of our correspondents said the stakes were high in the state because the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, is from the state.

Aisha had supported her brother, Mamhud Ahmed, in the race for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress but he lost to the incumbent governor, Jibrilla Bindow, coming second in the contest.

Despite the loss, Aisha is said to be interested in proving her worth as the President’s wife by winning the state for the APC.

Moreover, the state governor is facing allegation of certificate forgery and if the court rules against him even after winning, it could pave the way for Aisha’s brother to emerge as the APC candidate.

The state is also under pressure because the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar’s political relevance depends on the success of the PDP in the state after the INEC declared him (Atiku) the runner-up in the recent presidential election.

Atiku won the state in the last presidential race by a slim margin but his party, the PDP, is of the view that the election was rigged to reduce Atiku’s votes.

A civil servant in the state, who simply gave his name as Gregory from Michika, said Michika was under security ‘siege.’

“I will vote in Michika but when I called on Friday morning to notify my family of my intention, they warned me to leave Yola early because already Michika was under police siege because of the election. The interest of Atiku and Aisha Buhari is putting a lot of pressure on the state. If Atiku loses the state to the APC, he would have lost his base. Aisha is fighting for her position as the wife of the President and the possibility of her brother becoming governor,’” he said.

But a NAF top source said, “The Air Force ISR platforms cannnot be visible in every state because of logistic constraints, you don’t expect us to deploy in the 36 states. But there are flashpoints and states where you suspect that violence may want to occur.

“The ISR will be visible as usual in the North-East axis, South-South, South-West, Kwara and other places that crop up on the election day.

“But the aircraft are mainly for surveillance and nothing more. The security personnel are on the ground to manage any situation.”

DELTA STATE
In Delta State, security has been beefed up around major flashpoints.

Our correspondent reports that more security operatives have also been deployed in the riverine areas including the creeks of Warri South-West, Burutu, Bomadi and Warri-North local government areas.

Our correspondent observed on Friday patrols by military operatives around the oil city of Warrri, Effurun, Udu and Ughelli.

There was also heavy presence of policemen on stop-and-check duties along the Otor-Udu/Otu-Jeremi road and along the DSC Expressway.

Some military trucks were sighted stationed at the Effurun Market along the PTI Road in Uvwie LGA near Warri.

At the INEC office in Warri, security operatives were also sighted, although activities had yet to commence at the centre.

The spokesperson for Gbaramatu Kingdom in the Warri South-West Council Area of the state, Chief Godspower Gbenekama, described the heavy presence of security agents in the area as unnecessary.

Gbenekama while querying the rationale behind the massive deployment of security men in the creeks, however, noted that there was electoral violence during and after the presidential election.

BAYELSA STATE
In Bayelsa State, there was an uneasy calm among residents of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa capital and the indigenes of the neighbouring communities as more soldiers and policemen were seen moving around and stationed in strategic locations.

As early as 6am on Friday, the military presence in the state drawn from the Navy, Army and the Air Force were reinforced.

The police command also received a new commissioner while more police officers and men were seen arriving in different convoys. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps also got reinforcement.

The new Commissioner of Police, Shola David, had arrived in Yenagoa, earlier on Thursday.

While the military commands stationed in the state refused to comment on the development, the Police Command spokesman, Asimin Butswat, confirmed the arrival of more men and officers.

There was an aerial show of force by the Air Force as helicopters flew over the metropolis as early as 9am.

Most of the residents who spoke with our correspondents expressed worry over the development, saying that Bayelsa must not be turned into a war zone.

AKWA IBOM
In Akwa Ibom State, soldiers, mobile policemen and three commissioners of police have reportedly taken over the state.

Four MOPOL units, including Special Protection Units, have been deployed in the state.

The state Commissioner of Police in charge of election duties, CP Sani Kaoje, who confirmed the deployment to our correspondent on Friday, said the additional deployment would join forces with over 9210 earlier deployed in the state. He however said some of those earlier deployed in the state had been withdrawn.

One of our correspondents who monitored developments reports heavy presence of combined team of soldiers, mobile policemen and civil defence corps stationed in many places around Uyo metropolis.

The armed personnel were noticed in many places including the INEC headquarters.

Kaoje who spoke through the command’s Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, at a media briefing, however, said the additional deployment was not meant to harass and intimidate voters but to keep the peace before, during and after the elections.

“Yes we have more deployment of mobile policemen in Akwa Ibom. About four mobile units, including Special Protection Units and three commissioners of police have been deployed in the state.

“However, let me stress that they are not here to harass and intimidate voters. They are here to maintain peace and order before, during and after the elections,” he said.

Reacting to the belief by some people that the police command was working for a particular political party, he said, “The police should not be misconstrued to be taking sides with any political party. We remain apolitical and professional in the discharge of our duties. We are committed to free, fair and credible polls. I therefore use this opportunity to call on all eligible voters to come out and exercise their civil responsibility of voting for any candidate of their choice.”

KWARA STATE
Residents of Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, woke up on Friday to witness joint security patrol round the metropolis.

The operatives comprised policemen, soldiers, naval officers, members of civil defence, Immigration, NDLEA and Air Force. They were led in a convoy by the Federal Road Safety Corps as they moved round major streets in the city.

Also, the Air Force jet deployed in the state for the election was seen flying round the town in the morning while the police helicopter was sighted around the state capital.

It was observed that the residents stayed indoors in the morning as most streets were deserted till about 10 am, few taxi cabs and private cars were noticed in some major streets in the town.

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, who did not disclose the number of security men deployed in the state for the election, said there was a slight increase in the number of security men deployed over that of the presidential and National Assembly elections.

RIVERS STATE
There was palpable tension in Rivers State on Friday as stakeholders, elders, and women continued to raise the alarm over the alleged arrest of some indigenes of the state, who were members of the Peoples Democratic Party.

In Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, a group of women in black attires, protested against the alleged arrest of the liaison officer to the state Governor, Nathan Menabere, and six members of the PDP in the early hours of Thursday.

Calling for the immediate release of the arrested persons, the leader of the protesting women, Mrs Christiana Tamunobereton-Ari, decried the action of the security agents.

According to her, a group of soldiers invaded Ogu at about 1am, broke into some houses and arrested the affected persons without any reason.

Also, a group of elders and stakeholders in Rivers State accused the All Progressives Congress of plans to cause chaos that would lead to the declaration of a state of emergency in the state.

Speaking under the auspices of Elders and Leaders of Rivers State, they explained that the plan by the party was to introduce violence to the exercise.

A statement issued in Port Harcourt on Thursday also indicated that the ploy to unleash violence during the election would disenfranchise many indigenes and residents of the state.

The elders also pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene.

“We must condemn the reported plans by the leadership of the APC to destabilise the state and perpetuate violence during the governorship and state House of Assembly elections as a ploy to be used to declare a state of emergency in the state and/or to ensure that the elections in Rivers State are inconclusive,” the statement read in part.

When contacted, the state APC Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone, described the allegations against the party in Rivers as absolutely false, adding that his party was not involved in any plan to cause chaos.

Finebone explained that persons that signed the statement were the people planning to cause unrest in the state.

“The allegation against the APC is absolutely not true. They are perhaps the ones planning chaos and not the APC,” Finebone stressed.

The state Governor, Nyesom Wike, described the arrest as stage-managed, unlawful, and urged security agencies to be professional and unbiased in the discharge of their duties for the peaceful conduct of credible polls in the state.

“We want to warn that such biased, politically-induced arrests and malicious jailing of the PDP leaders only serve to heat up the already volatile political atmosphere with heightened tension and dissension, which could cause serious problems to the peaceful conduct of the governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state,” he said.

CUPP flays heavy military presence
Meanwhile, the Coalition of United Political Parties on Friday flayed the presence of soldiers in Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta, among others ahead of the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.

The coalition’s national spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere, condemned the development in a statement made available to journalists.

Ugochinyere said, “The homes of the PDP leaders and serving government officials in Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta states are being broken into by soldiers.

“Massive kidnaps and abductions of party leaders and people who have roles to play in tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) election are ongoing. Election officials are being surrounded in some areas in preparation to use them to announce fake results tomorrow.

Similarly, the coalition of civil society groups and election observers on Friday called on the international community to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the ongoing militarisation of elections in Nigeria.

The coalition said, “We are calling on all ECOWAS, African Union and the United Nations to immediately prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari, to cease the ongoing hostilities against the people of Delta, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and other states, presently under military hostage ahead of Saturday’s elections.”

APC planning to use operatives to rig –PDP, governors
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the PDP in Adamawa State, Tahir Shehu, has accused the APC of planning to use security agencies to intimidate voters in today’s governorship election to pave the way for manipulation of votes.

He said, “The government in power is planning to rig the election at all cost. That is the pressure on our party and other candidates. But our people are ready to protect their votes no matter the intimidation they are subjected to.”

Also, Taraba Governor, Mr Darius Ishaku on Friday alleged that there were plans by the APC-led Federal Government to use security operatives to arrest prominent members of the PDP in order to perfect their rigging plans.

Ishaku made the allegations at a press briefing in Government House, Jalingo ahead of the elections in the state today. He called on security operatives not to abandon their constitutional role.

In a similar vein, the PDP in Rivers on Friday in a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the PDP Chairman in Rivers, Jerry Needam, said its members across the state lived in fear as soldiers had been invading homes, raiding vehicles and molesting their supporters.

The statement read, “PDP members are being hunted and hounded by soldiers. This is happening simultaneously in all the major roads in the state.

“In all the roads leading to Ogoni, Andoni and Opobo, Ikwerre, Kalabari, Ahoada and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, passengers are being searched and any person spotted to belong to the PDP, is brought down, beaten and tortured.”

Wike, Amaechi Talk Tough Over Rivers Governorship Election

The Minister of Transport and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, declared yesterday that more Rivers people will die if the state governor and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nyesom Wike, gets a second term.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, urged the people of the state not to cast their votes for Wike, his former Chief of Staff, accusing him of sponsoring many killings in Rivers.

Amaechi said this in his Port Harcourt residence while receiving a visiting delegation of the British High Commission to Nigeria ahead of today’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.

In an interactive session with members of the party in Eleme on March 6, Amaechi, who is the leader of APC in the state and the Southsouth zone, had announced after a crucial meeting of Rivers stakeholders of APC, that they had agreed to back the governorship candidate of African Action Congress (AAC), Biokpomabo Awara, an engineer and native of Kula-Kalabari, a riverine community in Akuku-Toru LGA of the state.

On his part, Wike, a former Minister of State for Education, in a statewide broadcast, urged Rivers people to vote for candidates of their choice today.

But he accused Amaechi and the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Maj.-Gen. Jamil Sarham, of planning to unleash mayhem in the state during the elections.

Man 'Using Human Flesh' For Money Rituals Busted

Operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Ogun State, have arrested a 37-year-old herbalist, Libaq Alabade, for allegedly using human parts to do money rituals.

Some of the human parts recovered from the suspect include a
severed human leg, which the IRT detectives preserved in kerosene in a plastic container, to prevent decay.

Following a tip off by an undisclosed source, that a certain herbalist in Ajuwon community in Ifo, Ogun State, was allegedly using human parts for herbal medicine, including money rituals, the leader of the IRT team in Abuja, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari, ordered the Ogun State IRT coordinator, DSP Babalola Adekunle, to fish him out.

Adekunle subsequently led a team of detectives to arrest the herbalist in the house he built for his late wife in Ajunwon, Ifo, on February 15.

During the mission, the team recovered human parts, including the severed leg of a female and male said to have been used for money rituals.

Further findings revealed that Alabade owns many houses in the community, some of which are littered with shallow graves, from where he allegedly exhumes corpses to extract preferred human parts for ritual purposes.

Reacting to his arrest, the suspect, however, maintained that he was innocent. He said: “This is a total set up by my known enemy, a fellow herbalist, named Segun. He had once told me that he would deal with me for exposing him to the police.

“I was doing security work as an OPC member. I used to help police to identify some of these dangerous elements in our society. Even in our association meetings, I used to emphasise these problems.

“Segun told me that he would show me for helping the police to arrest him. Yes, I used to inform the police of their atrocities because I cherish a decent society and I have value for human lives. He just set me up.

“I was arrested for killing people for rituals. I have not killed anybody. We have two graves in my compound. I have seven wives. Three died. I have five children.

“My work is simple; I have medicine for ‘manpower’, that can make a man ‘strong’ for 30 minutes of s*x. One goes for N2,000 – N2,500.
“Let me advise the police. To reduce using human parts for rituals in Ogun State, they (police) should kill any suspect found with human parts after investigation had proved that the suspect really committed the offence or has the intention to commit.

“It is true that people are wickedly murdered for money rituals but I do not do it. I was set up by my fellow herbalist because I reported him to the police.”

Police sources say the suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed.

Oshiomhole Has Been Doing Everything to Escape from EFCC, says Buhari's Friend

A long time friend of President Muhammadu Buhari and Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu, who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in this interview with The Punch's Ihuoma Chedozie, speaks on issues surrounding his suspension by the party’s National Working Committee led by Adams Oshiomhole.

Were you guilty of anti-party activities as alleged by your party?

Up to date, the purported suspension has not been communicated to me in writing or orally. The much I heard was from radio, television and newspaper advertisement. I had even made inquiries at the national secretariat of our party; I also perused the register and found out that no letter was sent to me.

Then why do you think you were suspended?
I don’t know, to be honest. The much I know is that as a member of the merger committee of our great party, the APC, in 2013, I had remained steadfast and resilient in the pursuit of the goals of the party and our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari.

You have been insisting that you did not do anything to warrant a suspension, but you have been criticising the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole. Do you think it’s fair to be criticising the chairman of your party openly?
I think it is personal. He is Mr-Know-It-All and very intolerant of any contrary viewpoint. I still maintain that he mangled our party’s primaries recklessly. He dashed the hopes of our candidates in Rivers State and in many other constituencies. Otherwise, we were friends during the fuel price hike crisis during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s era. He was President of Nigeria Labour Congress and I was the National Publicity Secretary of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, and I represented the association in the fuel price hike talks.

How do you feel about this development?
I suspect Comrade Chairman, Oshiomhole, wants to sideline me. He wants to blackmail me and make me inconsequential when the time comes for ministerial appointments. You would recall that the spokesman for Mr President, Femi Adesina, hinted of possible cabinet reshuffle. I find solace in the fact that he (Oshiomhole) is not God.

The chairman of your party in Enugu suspended your ward’s party EXCO for passing a vote of confidence on you. Does that not say something about how unpopular you are?
One is at a loss to understand where the state chairman (of the party) derived the powers to suspend my ward executive council or any ward executive council for that matter from. I had perused page by page the Constitution of the APC and couldn’t locate where Ben Nwoye, who claims to have PhD in law, got the powers to dissolve a ward executive council. One will like to be educated on where the power he exercised is derived from, failure of which one can regard what he did as the height of brigandage and impunity.

But Dr Nwoye used to be your associate. What changed between the two of you?
He was and indeed (my associate) without being immodest; I was one of those who retained him as chairman when the same person he is backing today, used thugs to chase us out of Enugu State Congress of May 19, 2018, at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. This person’s thugs nearly killed Nwoye’s driver that day. I saved his chairmanship by organising a repeat primary the next day. I leave everything in the hands of God and refer Nwoye to Proverbs 17:13, where God’s judgment is waiting for him.

What steps are you ready to take to overturn the suspension?
The truth is that in the eyes of the law and the Constitution of the APC, I am not on suspension. Impunity cannot triumph over the rule of law, never.

You must have considered quitting the APC due to this. Which party will you like to join?
I am a student of struggle and cannot quit a party I am not only dedicated to, but have also committed my resources and sweat to build. We will, by God’s grace, outlive this. Democracy threw up the German dictator, Adolf Hitler, but one day his impunity was over.

Even beyond your membership of the APC, you are believed to be a close associate of President Muhammadu Buhari. Have you reached out to the President to intervene?
It will be a distraction to bother Mr President, so I didn’t reach out to him. We are busy celebrating his much deserved victory and thanking God for saving Nigeria from uncertainty. If President Buhari is not made of sterner stuff, he could have been bruised by Oshiomhole’s shenanigans – a chairman whose legacy is scatter, scatter and confusion. For example, few days after Mr President admonished us his supporters not to gloat or humiliate his opponents, Comrade utterly discarded the admonition and heaped insults on His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar. He became a destiny reader and prophet against old African tradition, which says that you don’t go with pepper where peace is being packaged.

You have been speaking out against the activities of Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha. How does it feel to be suspended alongside him?
I have nothing personal against Owelle Rochas Okorocha, except that I pleaded with him not to run for the APC presidential primary in 2014, as an apostle of the zoning principle. I told Okorocha that the Presidency was the turn of the North. I added that our brothers, the Yoruba, led by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the Action Congress of Nigeria, had come for an alliance and offered their over 1,000 delegates to President Buhari, then an aspirant. Why don’t we, Ndigbo in APC, go into same alliance and offer our less than 1,000 delegates to Buhari? Okorocha arrogantly refused. He ran and we paid dearly for it, for the Yoruba people got more than what was on their wish list in the alliance with Mr President. However, on July 12, during the launch of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport terminal of the Abuja mass transit train service, I pleaded with Oshiomhole not to hand over the APC structure in Imo State to Okorocha. I told him that the mainstream faction had rescued the APC from Okorocha during the congress of May 2018 and that giving the structure back to him would be harmful. Oshiomhole dismissed my advice and today he is burnt and the APC in Imo State is in unavoidable quandary. I am not happy to be vindicated.

But, after you lost the APC ticket for Enugu West Senatorial Zone, there were insinuations that you worked against the election of your party’s candidate, Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu. There were also reports that you openly spoke against your governorship candidate, Ayogu Eze. What do you have to say about this? How is that fair as you are in the same party? If I didn’t win the primary, I could have supported Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu. That’s me, I am a humble party man. But when I remember how Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu instituted serial court cases against our great party in Enugu State and how she factionalised our party for no just cause, it became impossible for me to support a stolen mandate. Do you know that it was Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu’s suit which scuttled Ken Nnamani’s genuine effort to reconcile the factions before the primary? I told them she could not beat a colossus like Senator Ike Ekweremadu and that without being immodest, I was the only one who could beat him (Ekweremadu). I couldn’t tolerate Senator Ayogu Eze for supporting the rigging against me which hurt, not only me but the whole party. My cardinal question remains – is Okechukwu responsible for Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu losing Egede, her ward? If she is a good lady, she could have had a seamless win in her ward, Egede. Charity, they say, begins at home. Please I’m not in any way instrumental to Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu not winning in any of the 81 wards which make up Enugu West Senatorial Zone. She lived on the assumption that the result would be written in a hotel, forgetting that President Buhari would not recklessly use the proverbial federal might. Count me out please, because she lost to ‘card readers’.

You reacted angrily at your inability to secure the Enugu West Senatorial ticket. Was your anger justified?
It is not me per se that reacted angrily, but the entire members of the party. Once more, without being immodest, I am one of the main engines of the party, so once I was betrayed, the members felt short-changed. It was like pulling out the head of the masqueraders. Did any of them contribute meaningfully to the building of the party? Are you aware that Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu simulated the case that hurt Senator Ayogu Eze’s governorship bid? A house divided against itself cannot stand. I did all I could to unite the party but Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu’s agenda regrettably prevailed. Today, she allegedly wants to be minister with Oshiomhole’s assistance, instead of reaping the whirlwind she sowed.

If you had emerged as the APC candidate, the incumbent, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, would still have been too strong for you.
Ask questions, Ekweremadu’s camp celebrated Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu’s emergence. That is the much I can say. I told Comrade Oshiomhole that she couldn’t win when card readers are used because she is neither friendly with any of the factions of the APC nor the electorate.

Have you reached out to Oshiomhole and other members of the NWC over your suspension?
For what? Please, the APC is founded on rule of law and has a very distinguished membership and I respect those laws. I was a member of the merger committee and know the rules and abide by them. We are not working under Oshiomhole and Sons Limited. Therefore, the rule of law must govern the affairs of the APC, not the whims and caprices of a man who has been using all manner of subterfuge to escape the arms of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission since 2016.

Looking back at the issues that culminated in your suspension, do you have any regrets? Are there things you wish you had done differently?
My happiness is that we won the presidential election free, fair and transparently. For me as a Christian, any other thing is to forget and forgive. So I pray for forgiveness for all those who mangled our primaries.

Do you think your insistence on the 2023 Igbo Presidency project has anything to do with your travails in the APC?
Yes! Understand that Comrade Oshiomhole is surreptitiously rooting for 2023 for himself and wants to do everything to sideline those from the South-East. Comrade Oshiomhole is aware that the South-East is the only geopolitical zone in the southern belt that has not presided over Nigeria since the advent of zoning of the Presidency between the North and the South in 1999. This was revealed by a close aide, in a discussion. When we thought he (Oshiomhole) was rooting for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the friend said no, that he might be using our national leader, Asiwaju, as a smokescreen. But I wondered how Oshiomhole would wriggle out of the EFCC’s web, given the obscene nature of his wealth. How will he explain that (wealth) to commensurate with his legitimate earnings?

For you, what is the way forward, politically?
I appeal to all to join President Buhari to consolidate the critical infrastructural development he has embarked upon. This is the way to prosperity, to economic growth and real restructuring. Imagine what Nigeria will look like when you have additional 5,000 megawatts of electricity, 5,000 kilometres of federal roads and 5,000 kilometres of standard gauge rail lines completed and Nigerians are able to produce what we eat. It would be near Eldorado and that is where we are heading to in Buhari’s second term in office.

Photos: Man Tries To Burn Neighbours House After Claiming To Have Seen A Ghost

A woman and her family are shaken up after their neighbour poured fuel all over her front door before trying to set it on fire.

The Stockton woman who didn't want to be identified told FOX40 the incident was caught on her home's doorbell camera around 2:30 a.m. Thursday near Dominion Drive.

The smell of fuel lingered in the air around the home hours after it was cleaned up. The family says the porch and door were scrubbed several times.

The family said they ignored the notification because most of the time they receive notifications of just insects flying by the camera.

When the woman's mother checked the footage two hours later, she saw her neighbor, identified as 38-year-old Cuong Pham, pouring what appeared to be fuel all over their front door before trying to light it.

When the fire department and officers arrived, investigators found approximately two gallons of diesel fuel that was poured by Pham.

Investigators told the family if it had been gas, Pham would have killed himself and their family inside the home.

There were a few adults and two children ages three and ten home at the time of the incident.

"OK, are we going to blow up at any minute? Do I go get the kids, do we take off or is he outside waiting for us?" the woman said.

Officers arrested Pham, who lives across the street, for attempted homicide and arson.

The woman told FOX40 Pham told police that he saw a ghost and was trying to get rid of it. Pham also said he has no problem with the family and he'd like to apologize.

This isn't the first time Pham was caught on this family's doorbell camera. On March 1, he was seen ringing the family's doorbell "like crazy" while pacing back-and-forth.

The woman said Pham is a known drug addict and has mental health issues.

"I wasn’t scared, I was mad. I wanted to go beat the guy up," a man who lives in the home told FOX40.

While the family is relieved the Pham was arrested and no longer across the street, they're still shaken.

"You do nothing, you're still innocent," the woman said. "You still get your house almost lit on fire."

Terrible!

How I Caught My Wife With My Pastor - Husband

A 35-year old man, Mr, Paul Nosakhare, has told an Oredo Magistrate Court of how he caught his newly married wife, Stella Maris Alegbe, with his Pastor, Joseph Igwemoh, Head of the Global Influence Ministry.

Pastor Igwemoh was last year arraigned on two count charges bothering on abduction and act likely to cause breach of peace was accused of sleeping with Stella inside his church.

At the resumed hearing of the case, Paul, during cross examination told the court he served as an Assistant Pastor to the suspect before the sexual scandal broke out.

Paul said he met Stella through Pastor Igwemoh and they courted for four years before they got married on March 24, 2018.

He said marriage lasted only three months as his wife moved out in July after the Pastor rented an apartment for her.

He stated that Pastor Igwemoh warned them not to have sexual intercourse until proper marriage is done while they were courting.

Paul said his wife denied him s-x on the first and second night of their wedding which was conducted by Igwemoh.

According to his statement on oath before the court: ”I reported my wife refusal for me to have s-x with her to my pastor who invited us to his office and advised both of us to be using condom for the period of three months.

“I was puzzled but I did not say anything because he is my pastor.

“There was a day I returned Pastor’s car to him in the church. I met one Pastor Comfort who told me Pastor was inside the office. After knocking severally, the Pastor refused to open the door but he switched off the light.

“After five minutes, I saw my wife coming out of Pastor’s office ruffled and sweating profusely. Pastor came out of the office and was wearing boxers and singlet.

“On June 17th, I went to the Pastor’s office and met my wife. The pastor was lying down in the bed while my wife was sitting on the floor very close to the Pastor.

“I asked my wife to follow me home but she refused saying she has not finished with the pastor. She returned home at 7pm.”

Paul said all efforts for him to make the marriage work failed as his wife moved out on July 6th, 2018.

Presiding Magistrate, I.U. Iyioha adjourned further hearing to March 21, 2019.
