Rivers Election: INEC Takes Big Decision Today

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has summoned a management meeting for this Friday to receive and consider the report of a fact-finding team it sent to Rivers State.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The panel on Rivers State will on Friday submit its report to INEC management. Thereafter, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and his team will consider the findings and make a pronouncement..."

There are four options before INEC now. They are:

  • whether or not to cancel the governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers State;
  • Restricted conduct of elections only in units, wards or areas affected by violence.
  • Announcement of collated or retrieved  results if the security situation does not permit a fresh poll;
  • declaring the results as it were and leaving the aggrieved to go to the tribunal.

According to the source, any delay in taking a decision may lead to a constitutional crisis in the state.

“INEC will be fair, just, equitable and it will be guided by the Electoral Act, 2010( as amended) in its decision on Rivers State.

“The panel has concluded its assignment. Were it not for the issuance of Certificates of Return to senators and Representatives-elect, we would have considered the report on Rivers on Thursday (yesterday).”

The Nation gathered tat the team which investigated the disruption of the collation and cancellation of results in Tafawa Balewa LGA of Bauchi State had also concluded its assignment.
“We will look at the findings of this committee to guide the conduct of supplementary elections in the state on March 23,” the source said.

The two leading parties – APC and PDP – have started preparations for the make-up poll ordered in six states on March 23.

The national leadership of the PDP said yesterday that the party was set for the supplementary poll in states where the elections were declared inconclusive.

The states are: Kano, Bauchi, Benue, Sokoto, Adamawa and Plateau.

Owner Of Lagos Collapsed Building Rescued

The owner of the collapsed building in Ita Faaji area of Lagos Island, Mr. Akinmoladun has been rescued from the rubble, according to a statement made by his son, Erinoluwa Akinmoladun.

He said: “When I came home this morning, as I was walking on the staircase, I observed the building was giving signs of weakness and I told my father about it.

But I couldn’t wait to know if he took any action because I left home in a hurry to attend to other things. I left my father and sisters at home.”

Erinoluwa said his father has been rescued, as he joined other rescue workers to evacuate the victims. He further revealed that the affected building was under the management of a developer, identified as Mr Giwa who had been managing the building since 2010.

They Are Plotting To Cripple Me Politically - Okorocha

Rochas Okorocha, Imo State governor, believes he was denied the Certificate of Return as the senator for the Imo West Senatorial District to cripple him politically ahead of the 2023 battle.

He also said that the “gang-up” against his preferred governorship candidate in the March 9 election, Uche Nwosu of the Action Alliance (AA), was part of the grand plot.

The governor accused the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Imo State of acting a script which he described as being cruel.

Speaking with reporters at the Imo Governor’s Lodge in the Asokoro Area of Abuja, Okorocha said he was sure that denying him the certificate “is aimed at ensuring that he does not become one of the principal officers of the Senate when it is inaugurated.”

According to him, he was awaiting an explanation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on why he was not invited for the collection of the certificate by senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect.

He said: “The law stipulates that once a candidate has been declared winner, he must receive his certificate or return.

“I am sure I was conspicuously absent from the certificates issuance ceremony. I was not there because INEC has removed my name from the list of senators having been declared the winner by the zonal returning officer.

“So, I am actually waiting to hear why INEC struck my name out. I think probably, INEC must be trying to do something special because I understand once results have been declared and returns made then you are bound to be issued a certificate of return.

“But to have exempted me, I am in the dark as to what was the reason I was not invited to collect my certificate of return. Maybe, INEC would want to organise a special programme for me to hand over this certificate of return because clearly, I won and it was a peaceful election, the best you can ever think of.

“I am told from the grapevine that it was because of duress. In other words, somebody must have coerced the returning officer to do what he was not supposed to do but here again; I do not understand what that means because there was nothing of such.

“How can you put somebody under duress to declare you the winner of an election that you have already won? And look, they are not saying that we did not win. They are not saying that the other man won.

“So, I do not understand why we should be the people forcing someone to do something wrong to claim victory. It is not true but I must let the world understand that this is a game that is being played.”

My Mother's New Husband Killed My Brother - Girl Reveals

A teenage girl, Omobowale Sunmola, yesterday told a Lagos High Court in Igbosere that her stepfather and his mother allegedly killed her elder brother and dumped him in a canal.

She told Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya that the incident occurred at their Maryland, Lagos home in 2014. She said she was 11 at that time, adding that she was about to begin Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1, while her brother, Tunde, was 13.

Omobowale, now 17, testified during the trial of her mother, Margaret Olufunmilayo Odunlade, her stepfather, Folorunsho Emmanuel and his mother, Funke Maxwell, for the alleged offence.

Odunlade, Emmanuel and Maxwell were arraigned by the Lagos State Government in 2014, on a two-count charge of manslaughter and misconduct with regard to a body.

Prosecuting counsel Adebayo Haroun said the alleged offences were committed about 6am, on August 2, 2014, at 17, Emmanuel Street, Maryland, Ikeja, Lagos.

He alleged that the defendants killed Tunde Sunmola by beating him up and not taking him to hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained on his leg.

Odunlade was also accused of dumping Tunde’s body in a canal.

Omobowale, led in evidence by Haroun, testified as the third prosecution witness. The witness said at the time, she lived with her mother, stepfather and his mum, while Tunde lived in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, with their grandmother, Mrs. Arinola Sunmola.

She said Tunde was eager to see her and their mother, so their grandmother persuaded his mother to come to Ijebu with her (Sunmola) and take him to Lagos on August 1.

Omobowale said when they got to Lagos, “my mother asked Tunde to start moving ahead of us and when I asked her why, she said she didn’t want people in the area to know that Tunde was her son. That night when my stepfather returned from work, he asked my mother, ‘who is this boy'?"

Following the conclusion of testimonies, Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya adjourned further hearing till June 26.

Mothers of Detained Boko Haram Men Demand to See Them

Mothers of some of the men detained over complicity in Boko Haram's dangerous activity, on Thursday asked the Federal Government to tell them the whereabouts of their sons.

They said they needed to know what happened to their sons and husbands, whether they were dead or alive. They tasked the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to acknowledge that hundreds of detained young men died in military custody.

One of them said, “They must release the list with all their names and give us mothers; this is what we are begging for.”

The women numbering over 100, spoke with journalists in Maiduguri on Thursday at an occasion commemorating five years of Boko Haram attack on Giwa Barrack during which many detained suspected insurgents were killed. They said they were still at a loss over the fate of their men, whether they had been killed or if they were still in detention.

The women, who organised themselves under a non-governmental agency, Jire Dole (Justice is a Must), said that nothing had been heard from their men who were in detention at Giwa Barracks before the attack by Boko Haram.

Leading the women, Hajia Hamsatu Allamin, the Executive Director of Jire Dole, said: “Government needs to tell us about the whereabouts of our sons.

“Thousands of young men and boys have been arrested by the military in Maiduguri and surrounding towns in Borno State since 2011, allegedly for being members of Boko Haram. Their mothers now demand answers from the Nigerian authorities and call on President Muhammad Buhari to order the military to release accurate information about all men and boys they have arrested.

“Almost all of those arrested were taken to the Giwa Barracks military detention facility in Maiduguri. No one currently knows their whereabouts. Some have been in detention since 2011 with no access to their families, lawyers or the outside world. Many have gone ‘missing’ or feared dead since they were arrested by the military at the height of the fight against Boko Haram.”

“Through the Jire Dole network, the mothers of some of these young men and boys are continuing to demand for information and justice. Many of the mothers have waited for years to hear what happened to their sons, none of whom were ever taken to court.”

One of the women, Hajia Gana, said, “Ever since my son was arrested in October 2011, I have been looking for him. I went to Giwa Barracks and saw him a week after his arrest. I filed a case in court, but nothing ever happened. I never saw him again.”

She said: “We need to know what happened, even if our sons are dead. It is time that President Buhari’s government acknowledges that thousands of young men were arrested and died in military custody. They must release the list with all their names and give us mothers the closure we are begging for.”

Hajia Gana is among hundreds of women who came together in 2016, to form a network of survivors and relatives determined to campaign for truth, justice and reparation. The network has been growing bigger and louder. Almost eight years after her son was snatched away from her by the military, she remains hopeful for information and justice.

Battle For Senate President Begins

It is likely another APC Senator may work with PDP to emerge senate president just like Bukola Saraki as that office is very 'sweet' because the occupant can dispense favour.

Some APC senators-elect have cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC leadership against sitting on the fence on the issue of the principal officers of the National Assembly.

The APC has a majority of 65 senators in the ninth Senate compared to 37 Peoples Democratic Party’s members.

In the House of Representatives poll, the APC won 211 seats, while the PDP clinched 111 seats.

Although the APC leaders have yet to produce a zoning formula, it was gathered that senators-elect, who are interested in the Senate presidency and other positions have started lobbying their colleagues.

But the APC senators-elect, who spoke to The Punch shortly after collecting their certificates of return, said the Presidency and the APC leaders should latest by next week come out with their position on zoning.

The incoming lawmakers specifically cautioned President Buhari and the APC leadership against working at cross-purposes to avoid another tussle that would alter the party’s zoning formula.

One of the senators-elect, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Many of the ranking senators have started mobilising support for their ambition and there could be a crisis if the process is not well managed.

“I will want the leadership of our party to come up with the zoning formula latest by next week, since we are through with the elections. By so doing, they would have succeeded in giving a direction for everybody to follow.”

On his part, a senator-elect from Ekiti, Adedayo Adeyeye, stressed the need for the national leadership of the party to provide the required direction for the ninth Senate.

Similarly, another senator-elect from Ekiti, Bamidele Opeyemi (APC Ekiti Central), said the leadership configuration of the ninth Senate should be designed in a way that would avoid friction.

Opeyemi said, “The leadership configuration in the ninth Senate or whatever process that will be used by the Presidency and party leadership must be well managed to avoid any backlash.

“The calibre and character of personalities elected for the 9th Senate are very solid and promising for the country but leadership is key, the very reason the leadership of the ruling party must manage it well.

“Once this is done, the party and in particular, the National Assembly and the Presidency, will be on the same page on development-driven bills sponsorship, policy formulations and approvals.”

The 8th Senate spokesperson, who also got re-elected from Niger State, Sabi Abdullahi, allayed the fears of Nigerians on possible leadership crisis in the ninth Senate as against the situation in the outgoing Senate.

He told journalists at the event that the required lessons to be learnt from the leadership squabbles of the 8th Senate had been learnt, hence there would not be a repeat of the ugly past.

Abdullahi said, “I was a key player in the leadership configuration of the 8th Senate and the attendant crises that followed, as one of the 43 returnees now, the lessons learnt will be used to prevent the mistakes of the past from happening.

Gaya indicates interest in Deputy Senate presidency
Meanwhile, the APC senators-elect gave the advice just as their counterpart from Kano South Senatorial District, Senator Kabiru Gaya, indicated his interest in the Deputy Senate President seat.

Already, seven ranking senators from the South-West are believed to be eyeing the position based on an assumption that the APC leadership would zone it to the geopolitical zone.

The senators-elect including Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos Central) and Ibikunle Amosun are said to be interested in the position.

Gaya introduced a new twist when he told journalists at the International Conference Centre, Abuja after collecting his certificate of return that he was also interested in the Deputy Senate President seat.

He said his aspiration was driven by mass appeal for it from his colleagues and his burning desire to serve in the leadership of the ninth Senate having returned for the fourth time.

He said, “As regards the leadership composition of the ninth Senate, the majority of my colleagues are mounting pressure on me to run for the position of the Deputy Senate President . I want to use this opportunity to announce that I’m running for the position being one of the most ranking senators in the ninth Senate.”

He nevertheless said that the actualisation of his dream would be determined by the APC leadership and the President.

The ambition of Gaya may not be unconnected with the pressure being mounted by the South-East and the South-South to produce the next Senate President.

Already, a ranking senator, Benjamin Uwajumogu, an APC member from Imo North, has been re-elected from the zone.

In the South-South, Francis Senator Alimikhena (Edo North) and his counterpart for the Delta Central, Ovie Omo-Agege, were also re-elected.

There are reports that senators Ahmed Lawan (APC Yobe North), Ali Ndume (APC Borno South) and Danjuma Goje (APC Gombe Central) may contest the Senate Presidency.

Jussie Smollett Pleads NOt Guilty In Court

Jussie has pled not guilty to the 16-count indictment against him. He was advised he needs to be at every court date going forward, and is set to be back in court in mid-April.

In the meantime, he'll be allowed to travel to L.A. and NY for meetings with his lawyers. He's gotta notify the court 48 hours in advance before going to either location, and also needs to check back in within 24 hours when he returns to Chicago.

Recall a grand jury handed down the whopping 16-count indictment last week nearly two weeks after Jussie was arrested and booked for allegedly filing a false police report. Jussie's attorney, Mark Geragos, called the indictment "overkill" anyway.

Photo: Sanwo-Olu Visits Collapsed Building Site, Meets Victims At Hospitals

Lagos State Governor-elect, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday visited the survivors of the collapsed building at the hospital in company of his Deputy Governor-Elect, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

Sanwo-Olu who also visited the site of the collapsed buildings at Ita-Faaji, Lagos Island to assessed the rescue operations and sympathised with the residents who lost loved ones in the tragedy commended the efforts by the emergency and rescue workers.

The governor-elect who hails from Lagos Island, arrived at Ita-Faaji at 1:05pm, lamented the loss of lives in the incident, which, he said, could have been prevented if the owner of the collapsed buildings had not flouted the state’s building codes.

The incoming governor personally engaged some residents to get first-hand information on how the three-story structure came down.

Some of the residents bared their minds on the incident with allegations that building developers in the area were fond of using sub-standard building materials on the property they manage, urging the incoming governor to carry out an audit on all buildings in area when he assumes office.

1.9m Nigerians Living With HIV - Survey

An estimated 1.9 million Nigerians are living with HIV even as a new national HIV prevalence of 1.4 per cent has been confirmed among Nigerian adults aged 15–49 years according to results of the 2018 National HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey, NAIIS, conducted by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, the Federal Ministry of Health, UNAIDS and other international partners.

Previous estimates had indicated that over three million Nigerians were living with HIV and that the country had a national HIV prevalence of 2.8 per cent.

Welcoming the news, yesterday, in Abuja that there are fewer people living with HIV in the country than previously estimated while launching the Revised National HIV and AIDS Strategic Framework 2019–2021, which will guide the country’s future response to the epidemic, President Muhammadu Buhari, however, observed that it was not time to celebrate.

“For the first time, the end of AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 is truly in sight for our country. I urge all of us not to relent but to increase the momentum. Let us work collectively and push for the last mile,” the president said.

Noting that the results of the survey came at the right time, he said it would provide the data required to plan adequately and consolidate on the past and current gains against the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country.

He said: “This is the largest population-based HIV/AIDS survey of its kind ever conducted and it has provided us with the crucial information to move forward and to act based on scientific data.

“More accurate figures show that fewer Nigerians have HIV/AIDS but we cannot celebrate yet because over one million of those infected are not on treatment.”

According to the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, “everyone infected with HIV needs to get treatment so they can achieve viral suppression, especially pregnant women. We must ensure pregnant women have access to antenatal services and are tested during every pregnancy. We know we can support HIV-positive mothers, hence ensuring the next generation is free from HIV.”

While Cox gave no specific reason for his move, he noted that Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled a new direction away from being the "digital town square" to focus on smaller-scale, private interactions.

"As Mark has outlined, we are turning a new page in our product direction, focused on an encrypted, interoperable, messaging network," Cox wrote.

"This will be a big project and we will need leaders who are excited to see the new direction through."

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo has blamed the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Adams Oshiomhole, and the party’s governorship candidate, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, for the inability of the party to win the governorship election in the state.

He said posterity would judge the two for their alleged roles in the election.

In a release issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo in Owerri on Thursday, the governor alleged that Uzodinma worked for Peoples Democratic Party in the just concluded elections. “We had maintained that Chief Uzodinma was just a mole in the APC and today, the governorship election in the state and its outcome have obviously vindicated us, aside the fact that a video of Chief Uzodinma’s celebration with Ihedioha has gone viral on the social media.”

Estate Agent Defrauds 125 Persons Of N25m In Lagos

An Ebute-Meta Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of a 39-year-old estate agent, Ibrahim Ayinde, for allegedly defrauding 125 persons under the pretence of providing them with apartments.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs O. A. Olagbende, however, ruled that the accused person should be remanded in Ikoyi prison for a week for failing to carry out court order.

Ayinde is answering questions on 125 count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.

He, however, denied the charge preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.

According to the Police prosecutor, Mrs Clara Olagbayi, the defendant committed the offence at Agege, a suburb area in Lagos between May and July, 2017.

The prosecutor further informed the court that Ayinde collected N25 million from 125 people for a 14-flat in Agege.

Trouble started when the unsuspecting victims started bringing in their belongings after paying fully for the apartment and they met other persons there despite the fact that they were given a complete set of key to the house.

At the resumption of the proceedings, the defendant whose lawyer was absent in court informed the Magistrate that he has not carried out the court’s order because he got it late.

Magistrate Olagbende had earlier ordered that the defendant should evict the tenants in the house pending the conclusion of the matter in court, an order he had failed to obey. The Magistrate, who was not pleased with the defendant excuses, ordered his remand in Ikoyi prison custody for a week, after wish he will carry out the court order.

While pleading for mercy, Ayinde said he has started paying some of the complaints and he will finish paying them by May, 2019.

The magistrate, however, disagree with him, insisting that he spend a week in Ikoyi prison and “when you return, you will go and evict the tenants currently living in the house as ordered by the court.”

She, thereafter, adjourned the matter till Thursday, April 11.

Gunman Shoots Dead Dozens Of Worshippers In Two New Zealand Mosques

A 28-year-old Australian white supremacist has opened fire at a mosque in New Zealand, shooting at children and reportedly killing at least 30 people.

Witnesses reported hearing 50 shots from his weapons including a semi-automatic shotgun and a rifle at Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch on the country's South Island.

The gunman - who identified himself on Twitter as Brenton Tarrant from Grafton, New South Wales - live-streamed the mass shooting inside the Al Noor Mosque, which happened about 1.30pm (11.30am AEDT) as Friday prayers were underway.

A video seen by Daily Mail Australia shows the man firing multiple shots at dozens of people as they try to flee.

Four people are in custody, including three men and one woman. One of them was arrested while wearing a suicide vest.

The suspected gunman posted a 87-page manifesto to Twitter before the killings, foreshadowing a 'terrorist attack'.

People were also reportedly shot at the nearby Linwood Masjid mosque.

There was another shooting outside Christchurch Hospital and multiple bombs were attached to cars three near the mosque.

Tribunal Grants Buhari, APC’s Request To Inspect Presidential Election Materials

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has granted access to President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to inspect the materials used for the conduct of the election.

The tribunal, led by Justice Abdu Aboki, gave the go-ahead on Thursday following the applications filed on behalf of the President and the ruling party by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Wole Olanipekun, and other prominent lawyers.

In their separate ex parte applications for the order of inspection, President Buhari and the APC pleaded that they be given access to the materials used by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in conducting the February 23 presidential poll.

They explained that this would enable them to defend themselves in any petition which the runner-up in the poll and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), planned to file.

The tribunal said it found merit in the appeal and ordered INEC to give the plaintiffs access to the materials for the purpose of inspection and to make photocopies of same.

It had granted a similar order to the PDP and its presidential candidate on March 6, allowing them to inspect the electoral materials to enable them to file and maintain their petition against the outcome of the presidential election.

The order also gave Atiku and the PDP liberty to obtain the certified through copies of the documents from the electoral umpire.

See What You've Done To Imo APC - Okorocha to Oshiomhole & Uzodinma

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo says the National Chairman of the APC, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, and the party’s governorship candidate, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, are to blame for the inability of the party to win the governorship election.

He said posterity would judge the two for their alleged roles in the election.

In a release by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo in Owerri on Thursday, the governor alleged that Uzodinma worked for the Peoples Democratic Party in the just concluded elections.

He said Uzodimma was one of the first to celebrate with the PDP candidate, Emeka Ihedioha, after he was declared the winner of the election, citing a video of the two contestants as proof of his guilt.

“We had maintained that Chief Uzodinma was just a mole in the APC and today, the governorship election in the state and its outcome have obviously vindicated us, aside the fact that a video of Chief Uzodinma’s celebration with Ihedioha has gone viral on the social media.”

He also alleged that Uzodimma succeeded in the alleged plot by ensuring only his supporters were made agents of the party, adding that his target was to destroy APC in the South-East.

“Chief Uzodinma succeeded through Adams Oshiomhole to ensure that only his supporters were made agents of the party, from the list he sent from Abuja to INEC.

“Unfortunately, none of Uzodinma’s and Oshiomhole’s approved agents were seen either at the ward, local government or at the state level; they didn’t care about the election and its outcome.

“At the end of the day, the APC candidate came fourth. And he has been celebrating with the PDP candidate.

“Their target as it has been shown now is to totally destroy APC in the South-East and in Imo in particular, thereby authenticating the claim in some quarters that it is all about 2023.

“We had equally maintained the contention that Imo people would not vote for Uzodinma because they know him very well, but Oshiomhole refused to listen.

“He came fourth and never showed that he took part in the election; Posterity and history will judge Oshiomhole and Uzodinma over the fate of APC in the South-East, especially in Imo State,” Okorocha said.
