Lagos SARS Shoot Man Dead While Watching Football

Tragedy struck on Olu Aboderin Street, Onipetesi area of Lagos on Sunday as Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives of the Lagos State Police Command allegedly shot dead a young man.

It was gathered that the operatives stormed an eatery in the area to arrest a man, who was watching a live English Premiership League football match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

According to a source, the victim who was a friend to the arrested man, challenged the operatives on why they would take away his friend and one of the SARS personnel allegedly shot him dead.

It was learnt that angry youths blocked the two sides of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and set up bonfires, causing traffic gridlock in the process.

The victim, who was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors.

When contacted, Police PRO, DSP Bala Elkana, told The Punch that the command would investigate the matter. “We got a complaint that some hoodlums blocked the road because a man was killed; we have deployed our officers in the place to clear the blockade and we are investigating the matter.”

Deadly Rerun: I'm Ready To Face PDP In Court - Ganduje

Embattled Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on Monday in Kano said he is ready to face the party that won the first lap of the election, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which vowed to challenge his victory at the just-concluded Kano supplementary poll in court.

He said: “Before the re-run election, which we emerged victorious, they were deep-neck in ballot stuffing and other electoral offences, a ploy that was later uncovered.”

The governor spoke in Ganduje town of Dawakin Tofa local government when he was receiving thousands of supporters who trooped to congratulate him over his re-election.

Ganduje said it was after that ballot stuffing scenario that genuine election was conducted at the supplementary election, which he described as fair and credible.

“My thinking about these people is they are about to kick-start what would later consume them unawares. What they did in other elections of the state legislators in some places, will be looked at, with the view to ascertaining authenticity of such votes they claimed to have gotten,” he stated.

I Can Cause Trouble For Nigeria If Provoked — Nnamdi Kanu

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has asked the Federal Government not to provoke him, adding that he has the capacity to make the country ungovernable.

He described an alleged plan by the FG to arrest him with the International Police as an effort in futility. He said he was a British citizen and so could not be subjected to any Nigerian law.

Kanu’s reaction followed recent revocation of his bail by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

While dismissing the bail revocation as meaningless and senseless, Kanu said, “I am a Biafran that holds a British citizenship. Nigerian law courts and their judges are of no consequence to me.”

He dared the Federal Government to come for him if it could, stressing that the bail revocation was a ploy by the Federal Government to make the International Police stop him from travelling freely across the world to make a case for the independence of Biafra.

His statement obtained by our correspondent in Awka, Anambra State, read in part, “I am not a Nigerian citizen; therefore, your bail revocation is completely meaningless to me. My devotion to the absolute and puritanical pursuit of the total restoration of the sovereignty of the Republic of Biafra is unwavering.

“My lawyers are waiting for an Interpol red notice against my name and all hell will break loose. If the intention of Binta Nyako is to curtail my travels, thereby limiting IPOB diplomatic offensive, then let me assure Biafrans that our enemies have failed.

“Should they request Interpol intervention in this matter, I will give my lawyers here in the UK the instructions we need to launch a no-holds-barred legal assault against Nigeria.

“So, I am waiting for them. Europe and Interpol are not a bunch of wild beasts like Nigerian law courts and her security services. In Europe there is rule of law which is also binding on Interpol.

“The treasonable felony charge they levelled against me is not a crime that could be committed by merely carrying Biafran flag about and preaching secession, but one that could only be committed using guns, bombs and other weapons, which my group has never been associated with. I warn the Federal Government not to dare me because I’m capable of causing trouble for Nigeria.”

Osinbajo Speaks: Many would’ve been in trouble if I had died in the crashed Chopper

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday said that his surviving a helicopter crash in Kogi State last February had saved a lot of persons in and out of government. According to him, they would have been made to explain their roles in needless conspiracy theories.

Osinbajo spoke at the old Banquet Hall of the State House during a special thanksgiving service for the victory of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the recent presidential election.

Pointing out that if he had died in the crash, which occurred while landing in Kabba, Kogi State before the general elections, he stressed that many government and non-government officials, including his security details would have been blamed or put in trouble for many things they didn’t even know about.

To this end, he said that God deserved to be praised not only for saving his life but also for saving many other persons the trouble of being smeared with false allegations.

After the crash, he recalled that a woman repeatedly hinted that Kogi State itself could have been the cause of the accident.

He said “On February 2nd, God gave me reason to know that but for His grace we would have been consumed, when our helicopter crashed.

“When the crashed occurred, for a moment there was complete silence. For a second, it occurred to me that if we had died, that is what it would have been – complete silence. But we all got out without a scratch. God delivered us.

“God also delivered those in charge of our security; even the government of Kogi State would also have been in trouble. We give God all the glory.

“I pray God will also be kind to you all also, that you will never be lacking in support, care and genuine prayers.God is surely worthy to be praised. I have no special qualifications to be here but exaltation comes from God," he added.

Driver Hits Female LASMA Officer & Speeds Off With Her

It sounds like a story from a horror movie. In full public glare, a taxi driver hit a traffic manager and drove off with her as she hung on the hood of his car.

According to Lagos Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official Adeyinka Seriki, it all happened in Ikorodu on the outskirts of Lagos on Thursday at 6.35pm.

She told The Nation, at the weekend, that she hung on the car hood from Igbogbo Garage on Ikorodu Road to Oluwanishola Filling Station on Baiyeku Road.

Seriki said: “I was at my duty post with another colleague. Usually, anytime from 4pm, traffic gets busy in the area. We were controlling traffic when the taxi driver came and parked in the middle of the road. He caused gridlock. We told him to leave, but he refused. I tried to rebuke him and let him know that what he was doing was bad, but he sped off. He hit me with the car and I fell on the bonnet (hood).

“If I had not fallen on the bonnet, the car would have crushed me. When I fell on the bonnet, instead of him to wait, he moved on with a high speed. I struggled to hold to something on the bonnet; he still drove on high speed and was swerving, trying to throw me down, but I held on to something. While the car was moving, people were trying to stop him, but he sped on and no one could stop him. Even when a trailer was coming, he tried to swerve me to the trailer so that I would fall off from the bonnet, but I thank God that I did not fall. I held the bonnet tightly. An eyewitness, who drove behind, later overtook him and he stopped at Oluwanishola Filling Station on Baiyeku Road’’.

She said her hands were still hurting from the horrible experience. The LASTMA official also has bruises on her knees, which the vehicle hit, while her shoulder was dislocated.

“I’m now receiving treatment. It should not be when LASTMA officials are killed that the matter should be taken up. This taxi driver should pay for what he has done. It is sheer wickedness. He is like a murderer, he should face the consequences of what he has done,” Seriki said.

An eyewitness, Oyeyemi Akieu, a security expert, said he was going home when he witnessed the incident.

Said he: “I was going home that day. When I got to Igbogbo garage, there was traffic jam. The LASTMA officials tried to clear it. As I moved forward, I saw that people were putting their hands on their heads and shouting, ‘do you want to kill her.’ I looked ahead of me to see what was happening, and then I saw three vehicles ahead of me. I saw a LASTMA official, a woman, on top of the bonnet of a moving vehicle. The driver did not wait for her to come down. She was shouting ‘will you stop, I must not fall, let me come down’, but the driver was just swerving the car as if he wanted to throw her on the path of an oncoming vehicle.”

Akieu added: “This made me to bring out my phone and I recorded the incident, which lasted for about five minutes, covering about 500 metres.

“I overtook the cars ahead of me. I overtook the taxi driver and stopped in front of his car near a filling station. So he had no choice but to stop. Immediately he did, commercial motorcyclists (okada riders) and passersby, who witnessed the incident, ran towards him. Later, other LASTMA officials and the Police Mobile Force (MOPOL) came around.

“For this to have happened shows the kind of person the driver is. How can a man leave a woman on the bonnet of a moving car? The bonnet would be hot because the car was moving. The man could have killed the LASTMA official.”

The Head of Zone 33, Ogolonto, Ikorodu, Mr. Kayode Odunuga, said he got a distress call from Adeyinka and her colleague after 7pm of the fateful day that they needed attention.

“We urgently called the attention of the commander of Mobile Unit 63 Igbogbo, and three armed men were deployed, who traced our officials to the incident scene. The vehicle was recovered, but the driver bolted. The vehicle was taken to Igbogbo Police Station. We learnt the driver lives in the area. He fled when he sighted the police,” Odunuga said.

She said they were returning to Bauchi from Gombe State when the incident occurred.

Woman Reveals How Fraudsters Hypnotised, Duped Her

A woman, Ebun Efunkoya, at the weekend took to the social media to narrate how she was hypnotised and defrauded of over a million naira by a criminal syndicate operating in a tricycle.

The unfortunate incident, according to the woman, occurred on March 22, near Eko Hotel, Lagos Island, where she boarded the tricycle en route to her office at Ligali Ayorinde Street.

She said: “I boarded a Keke Napep at Eko Hotel roundabout heading for my office at
Ligali Ayorinde Street. A woman was already in the tricycle. A few seconds after, a man also entered, making me to sit in the middle. He later alighted at a bus stop not so far. He gave the driver dollar. The driver became angry, saying why should he give him dollar currency.

“The man spoke French fluently, saying he is a foreigner and had never been to Nigeria before. He said he had been defrauded a lot in the last two days. The driver then said he should get in, that he would help him.”

Continuing, Efunkoya said at that juncture, she was becoming impatient with the driver as she was being delayed and only wanted to get to work, but the man asked her and the other woman if they could follow him to a Bureau De Change (BDC) to change the dollar note because he was scared the driver might dupe him.

Oblivious of the trick, Efunkoya, who said she didn’t answer the man, however, answered the other woman, who tapped her and suggested that they should help the ‘foreigner’.

“I told her that I was already late for work. Then the woman said she was also going somewhere, but that we should be Good Samaritans and good Christians.

“I didn’t know when we passed my office. I later realised that I was at a market and then I got into a car and the rest is history. I did not go to work that Friday, as I spent the day with them.

“A pastor came into the picture and started telling me specific things about myself, more like he was ‘prophesying’. He was quoting the bible, speaking in tongues, doing praise and worship. One thing led to another and I was swindled of N220,000 that Friday.

“But did it end there? No. Still under whatever influence I was put, I got home that Friday/Saturday morning and started borrowing money from my friends like a mad woman. “I packed my jewellery and my mum’s jewellery, her cash at home and her Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards. I left home and headed for Idimu in Lagos.

“I got to them, they welcomed me, hugged me and the pastor said it was time to bless all I’ve brought and do deliverance. I was instructed to switch off my phone.

"I discovered later that they had withdrawn over N460,000 from the accounts. They took my phone (iPhone X), wig, smart watch, jewellery and emptied my accounts,”
 Efunkoya said.

She said she thereafter regained consciousness around 11pm on Saturday and borrowed a stranger’s phone to call her sister, thinking she was at Iyana Ipaja, only to discover that her location was farther.
She told me to get a cab and come home straight. I got home and everything was still like a dream. I later regained consciousness and realised that I had been duped,” the woman said.

Police spokesman Bala Elkana said the incident was not reported at any police station.

He said: “The matter has not been reported to us. The lesson contained in the victim’s narrative is worth learning. It shows that those involved are members of a swindling syndicate. Passengers in public transport need to be careful when interacting with strangers. Report such suspicious persons to any police team on the road.”

Burundi Bans BBC, Indefinitely Suspends VOA

Burundi has banned the BBC and indefinitely suspended Voice of America, moves that campaigners and the international broadcasters described as a blow to press freedom.

The central African nation’s media regulator revoked the BBC’s licence and accused it of airing a documentary that it said was false and damaged the country’s reputation. It extended an existing suspension on VOA, accusing it of employing a reporter who opposed the government.

Both broadcasters were suspended, initially for six months, in May last year in the run-up to a referendum that opposition politicians and activists said was designed to extend the president’s rule for at least a decade.

At the time it accused both of breaching press laws and unprofessional conduct. They have been off air in Burundi ever since.

“The unwarranted decision of the Burundi government to ban the BBC and suspend indefinitely Voice of America strikes a serious blow against media freedom, and we strongly condemn it,” the BBC said in a statement.

The publicly funded British broadcaster aired a documentary last year about what it said were secret detention and torture sites in Burundi. The government dismissed the report and the BBC said it stood by its journalism.

Burundi’s regulator on Friday also banned journalists from working for either organisation.

Stop Lying Against Us - PDP Warns Osinbajo

The Peoples Democratic Party on Sunday said the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was economical with the truth when he said the PDP never completed any major infrastructural project in 10 years during the 11th Bola Tinubu Colloquium in Abuja.

According to him, the PDP never completed any major infrastructural project before Buhari’s administration despite that Nigeria earned $383bn between 2010 and 2014.

The VP had said, “At the last colloquium, I said that
Nigeria’s main problem is not a lack of ideas, it is not a lack of projects and programmes, it was most of the time with experience in the past, a lack of integrity in leadership and corruption in particular. That was the reason why we were finding it difficult to make any progress and I think that was why we earned $383bn in four years, 2010 – 2014, the highest ever in the history in our country and yet Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was not done and Lagos-Kano Railway was not done. All the things that were supposed to be done were not done.

“You cannot point to a single major infrastructure project that was completed in the 10 years period despite the high revenue, including power. So a government coming after so many years of waste must be a government that emphasises prudent, and integrity in public finance so that they manage the little resources to achieve the maximum that can be achieved. That is what President Buhari is set out to achieving.”

But the PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Diran Odeyemi, in an interview with The Punch, said the PDP completed many major infrastructural projects, which he said, Nigerians were enjoying and appreciate the PDP for them.

He said it was sad that Osinbajo, who is a pastor, misinformed Nigerians in a public gathering, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari’s government should address national governance and national needs rather than engaging in incorrect propaganda.

He urged Osinbajo to stop lying against the PDP, adding that he should leave the party alone.

He advised the government to recognise that elections were over and that Nigerians expected government to initiate and execute policies, programmes and projects that would impact favourably on them.
He said, “The Vice President should know that we have stopped campaigning and that the election is over. What we expect them to do is to embark on actions and projects that will address the needs of Nigerians. They should stop talking about the PDP. For the past four years, they have been blaming the PDP for not doing this or not doing that. They said they have won an election, though it is subject to legal test at the tribunal. We expect them to stop talking about the PDP but to concentrate on governance and whatever they want to do except they want to tell the whole world and Nigerians that the only achievement they know how to do is to blame the PDP or talk about the party every time.

“The records of our achievements are there for Nigerians to see. If after four years, all they will still say is that the PDP has not done this or that, that means they are not serious. Blaming the PDP for many years and continuing that after they had been declared winner of the 2019 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Nigerians will know who is telling lies. It is unfortunate that Osinbajo as a pastor will come to a public forum and lie against the PDP. Nigerians are not stupid. If Osinbajo said we have not completed any infrastructural project in 10 years, we leave it for Nigerians to judge.”

Faces of 5 Nigerians Arrested for Robbery in UAE

Five Nigerians, who allegedly stormed a money exchange in Sharjah and fled with Dh2.3 million, have been arrested, the police said on Sunday. According to the police, the men barged into the exchange and smashed the glass barrier between the customers and the staff, stole the money in multiple currencies and fled.

Two employees at the exchange were injured as they resisted the robbers.

One of them managed to notify the police. The Sharjah Police coordinated with forces from Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman to nab the suspects from four emirates within 48 hours after the robbery was committed.

The incident was reported at Al Ansari Exchange in Al Tawoon area. A top police official said the suspects came to the country on visit visas on March 18. For two days, they studied the exchange office before deciding to commit the robbery around midnight - just before the shop was to close. On March 20, four of the suspects stormed into the exchange office, while one waited in a car outside. After the four suspects rushed out with the money, they fled in the car.

Major-General Saif Al Zeri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police, said the whole amount has been recovered.

"The police team reached the site within seven minutes after the robbery was reported. The injured staff members were rushed to the hospital, where they were discharged the next day," the officer said.

The police lifted forensic evidence from the site and formed a team to crack the case. "Arrest warrants for the suspects were circulated at all ports of the country to prevent them from leaving."

The police got the number plate of the car in which the suspects fled. Following this lead, they arrested one of the suspects in Sharjah. This suspect led the police to the others - two in Ajman, one in Abu Dhabi and one in Ras Al Khaimah.

The suspects, who confessed to the crime, have been referred to the public prosecution.
