#ENDSARS: Presidency Speaks On Death Of Kolade Johnson

New Zealand Initiates Bill To Ban Guns Used In Mosque Attack

New Zealand's government on Monday introduced a bill it plans to rush into law that would ban the types of weapons a gunman used to kill 50 people at two mosques.

Police Minister Stuart Nash said that if lawmakers pass the bill as expected, the new law will take effect April 12, less than a month after the March 15 attacks.

Plans for law changes were first announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in the days after the attacks, when the government imposed an immediate ban on the sales of such weapons.

The bill has bipartisan support and could even pass with a unanimous vote of all 120 lawmakers.

"These are guns that are designed to kill people," Nash said.

He said one of the weapons used by the gunman was an AR-15 style rifle, and that all the
weapons the gunman used in the attacks would be banned.

The bill would ban "military-style" semi-automatic guns and high-capacity magazines. It would also ban semi-automatic shotguns that could be fitted with detachable magazines and pump-action shotguns that can hold more than five rounds.

The bill wouldn't ban guns often used by farmers and hunters, including semi-automatic 22-caliber or smaller guns that hold up to 10 rounds, or shotguns that hold up to five rounds.

Nash said the gunman had left a national legacy of harm, pain and grief. He said the gunman was able to buy semi-automatic guns and high-capacity magazines legally, and then put them together to create military-style weapons.

"The loophole that this terrorist used to kill 50 people was totally unacceptable," Nash said. "We're closing that down."

The bill would also impose tougher penalties for people who use the weapons after they are banned. Lawmakers intend to introduce more legislation later in the year, including the creation of a register to track guns.

The government intends to compensate owners of banned guns in a buyback scheme that will cost up to 200 million New Zealand dollars ($137 million). An amnesty will give people until Sept. 30 to hand over banned weapons.

Nash said that so far, about 200 people have handed in their guns but many are waiting for the buyback scheme's details, which haven't yet been announced.

Women Dismissed For Getting Pregnant Reinstated By Ghana Fire Service

Two female firefighters, who were dismissed from their jobs for being pregnant, have been reinstated by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

A lawyer for the women told CNN that the decision was a victory for the rule of law and human rights in the West African country.

Their reinstatement on Monday comes a month after CNN reported on their case.

Thelma Hammond and Grace Fosu were fired in June 2013 and September 2014, respectively, after violating a decades-old rule prohibiting women firefighters from becoming pregnant within their first three years of employment.

In October 2017, the two women sued the fire service in what would become Ghana's first successful gender discrimination court case.

In the Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court, lawyers for the fire service argued that vigorous training during the first three years of employment may "adversely affect the fetus and the would-be mothers." But their reasoning didn't stand up.

In April 2018, after less than a year of court proceedings, Justice Anthony Yeboah declared the regulation, instituted in 1963, was "discriminatory in effect, unjustifiable, illegitimate and illegal."
In his ruling, Yeboah said the dismissal of Fosu and Hammond was "[an] unwarranted, institutional onslaught on their fundamental human rights -- right to work and freedom from discrimination."

The judge asserted that women were "entitled to the right to choose when to become pregnant" and ordered Fosu and Hammond's reinstatement, the payment of all salaries and bonuses lost due to their dismissal, and compensation of around $9,000 to each of the women "for the trauma and inevitable inconvenience of the wrongful dismissal."

But, despite the initial court ruling last year and an unsuccessful appeal in January, the fire service still had not reinstated the women or compensated them until now.

"The court says we should reinstate them so we are only implementing what the court has said ... We have come to a gentleman's agreement between the two parties and it has been understood," GNFS spokesman Ellis Okoe told CNN.

It is unclear how many women were previously affected by the regulation, which has since been scrapped by the fire service.

Okoe said the period prohibiting pregnancy has been reduced from three years to one -- the first six months of training and six months of probation -- to "reflect the changes of the time."

Joseph Whittal, the head of Ghana's Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, which provided free legal services to Fosu and Hammond, confirmed that the commission had been contacted to arrange the payment of compensation as ordered by the court.

Man Demands $2,000, Vows To Publish Ex-Girlfriend’s N-de Photos If Denied

A 30-year-old man was, on Monday, brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged threat to publish his ex-girlfriend’s n-de photographs on social media for her refusal to give him $2,000.

The man, Gerald, was also accused of stealing his former girlfriend’s personal items and cash worth N1.7m.

The defendant, who resides in Lekki, Lagos, faces seven counts bordering on theft and threat to publish offensive pictures.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Francis Igbinosa, told the court that the defendant committed the offences between January, 2018 and March, 2019 at No. 19, Ezekule St., Victory Estate, Ago, Okota, Lagos; and No. 2a, Ibukun Oluwa-Awoshika St., Chevy View Estate, Lekki.

Igbinosa said the defendant had threatened to publish the n-de photographs of the complainant, who was his ex-girlfriend, on social media, “if she fails to give him $2,000 within a period of 12 hours.”

Igbinosa also said that the defendant assaulted the complainant by hitting her head on the wall, adding that the complainant sustained injuries from the alleged assault.

He said that the defendant entered the house of the complainant and stole one digital camera worth N504,000, one Samsung phone worth N197,000, a washing machine worth N90,180 and cash sum of N300,000.

Igbinosa said the total amount of the items stolen was N1.7m.

The defendant, however, denied the allegations leveled against him.

Pick A Christian As Senate President or Speaker - CAN

"Today, both the President and the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria are Muslims and our appeal is to let either the Senate President or the Speaker be a Christian to address the religious dichotomy."

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the leadership of the National Assembly to elect a Christian as the Senate President or Speaker of the House of Representatives.

A statement issued by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant (Media and Communications) to Reverend (Dr.) Samson Ayokunle, the CAN President, on Monday, noted that the President and the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) are Muslims.

CAN, therefore, urged the National Assembly leadership to consider electing Christians into the number one positions of the red and green chambers to give all Nigerians a sense of belonging.

The statement read: “As you prepare for your inauguration, CAN urges you to balance the appointments of your principal officers across religious divides to avoid domination and marginalisation of any kind in the interest of equity, justice, and fair play as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“We, from the Christian Association of Nigeria, recognize the importance of the National Assembly to the stability and growth of our polity. It is in this regard that we call for ethnic and religious balance with depth in picking the leadership of that great institution of democracy. To ensure that this happens is to remove any apprehension and suspicion harbored towards the leadership of this country.

“Although both the Senate and the House of Representatives have several principal officers, our focus here are the Senate President, the Deputy Senate President, the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker. As it has been the practice since 1999, whenever the Senate President is a Christian, the Speaker of the House has always been a Muslim and vice- versa. And the same thing happens to their deputies.

“Our quest becomes imperative due to the existing order in the two other arms of the government. Today, both the President and the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria are Muslims and our appeal is to let either the Senate President or the Speaker be a Christian to address the religious dichotomy. This will give all Nigerians a sense of belonging irrespective of their religious affiliations.

And a critical study of Chapter 14 (13 and 14) of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended) underscores this truth. The composition of the government of the federation or any of its agencies and the conduct of its affairs shall be carried out in such a manner as to reflect the federal character of Nigeria and the need to promote national unity, and also to command national loyalty, thereby ensuring that there shall be no predominance of persons from a few state or from a few ethnic or other sectional groups in that Government or in any of its agencies.

“The composition of the government of a state, a local government council, or any of the agencies of such Government or council, and the conduct of the affairs of the government or council or such agencies shall be carried out in such manner as to recognise the diversity of the people within its area of authority and the need to promote a sense of belonging and loyalty among all the people of the federation.”

The association also called on the Ninth National Assembly members to “address both the religious and the North and South dichotomies in the interest of equity, justice and fair play”, while assuring lawmakers of their prayers “as they make laws for the peace, order and good government of the federation”.

On the present administration, the statement continued: “We also urge both the Presidency and the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to support the position of the Association in its quest to find an enduring peace, unity and development for our Fatherland. Doing this will go a long way in fixing some of the problems confronting our country today that are rooted in religious, tribal suspicion, domination and marginalisation at every level of the government.

“In as much as we agree that merit should not be sacrificed in every appointment, there are Christians, who are equally credible and capable of running the affairs of the National Assembly and other key positions in the government if given the opportunity. Those who had and still serving in one office or the other are our living proofs.

“Once again, we rejoice with you and congratulate you all. We give you the assurance of our spiritual support to this all important arm of the government. CAN is also willing and ready to collaborate with the Leadership of the National Assembly when the need arises.

Obasanjo: Some PDP Leaders Are After Their Stomach

President Olusegun Obasanjo says some leaders of the (PDP) are after their pockets and stomach. Speaking when he received regional leaders of the party in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital on Monday, the former president advised the opposition party to get committed people on its side.

He said Nigeria needs a vibrant voice and opposition with a view to building a virile democracy.

Obasanjo said he was willing to support genuine efforts from those who were passionate about the interest of the country.

“I knew PDP would lose the election in 2015 because it was clear, and I knew PDP will need to be rebuilt after losing the election,” the former president told his guests.

“You need what I call a critical mass of committed people, and come rain, come shine they are committed. With that, you can make Nigeria better.

"You see peoples’ faces beautiful but you don’t know what each person harbours inside of him. If you discover a bad egg, remove such a person and if such person has learnt his or her lessons, there can still be room to accommodate the person.

“Politically speaking, you can’t be my friend if you don’t buy into Nigeria’s project. For me, till death, I will continue to push for a better Nigeria.”

More Trouble for Nollywood Actress Monalisa As Court Renews Arrest Warrant Against Her

A Lagos High Lagos in Igbosere on Monday renewed a bench warrant for the arrest of actress and producer, Monalisa Chinda-Coker, over a tax evasion charge.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye renewed the order for her arrest following her failure to
appear in court for trial, allegedly since 2017. She adjourned further proceedings till June 5. When the case was called Monday, neither Coker nor her lawyer was present.

Prosecution counsel Babatunde Sumonu told the judge that the bench warrant had yet to be effected.

“The bench warrant is to continue,” Justice Akintoye held. The judge made the original order for Coker’s arrest last January 21, following an application by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.

The state alleged that she repeatedly failed to honour a court summons. The Nation reports that the move for her arrest flowed from a two-count charge accusing Coker of failure to file annual tax returns and pay income tax in respect of her company, Monalisa Code Productions, for six years.

Monalisa Code Productions carries on its business from Lekki in Lagos.

On January 21, prosecution counsel, Y. A. Pitan told Justice Akintoye that Coker had not appeared in court since 2017, when the charge was filed against her.

“The defendant has been served with hearing notice. The proof of service is in the court’s file,” Pitan said, while making an application for the bench warrant.

Granting the application, Justice Akintoye adjourned further proceedings till February 2.
But on February 2, the court heard that the bench warrant had yet to be effected. It ordered that the warrant should continue and adjourned till Monday.

Count one of the charges, marked LD/5712c/2017, reads in part: “Failure to furnish and file annual tax returns for the purpose of personal income taxation with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) contrary to Section 94(1) of the Personal Income Tax Act 2004 (as amended).”

The particulars of the count stated that Coker “of Monalisa Code Productions, being a taxable person in Nigeria and carrying on business at… Lekki… failed to furnish and file tax returns on your personal income for the years 2011 to 2016.”

Drama At CCT As Onnoghen's Witness Comes To Court With Written 'Expo'

There was mild drama at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) sitting in Abuja on Monday when a prepared written script was found on one Lawal Olanrewaju Busari, a witness of Walter Onnoghen, the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Onnoghen is standing trial over allegations of fraudulent declaration of assets.

When the matter resumed on Monday, Onnoghen opened his defence as one of his witnesses, Lawal Olanrewaju Busari, his official driver, took the oath and entered the witness box.

During the cross-examination, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the defence counsel, asked a series of questions on his relationship with Onnoghen and how he was sent to purchase and receive the forms on behalf of the defendant.

However, when Aliyu Umar, the prosecution counsel, asked him to hand over the paper in his hand to Danladi Umar, the CCT Chairman, it was discovered that the paper contained written answers to questions of the defence counsel — known in Nigerian parlance as 'expo'.

The court, therefore, admitted the script found on the witness as an exhibit.

Earlier, the court admitted the receipt for the purchase of the asset declaration form of the CJN as evidence D2 and threw out the receipt of the acknowledgement of the declaration form, stating that it was not relevant. Umar faulted the document tendered by the defence, saying it was not relevant to the case.

Awomolo also asked the tribunal to serve one Mrs. Theresa Nwafor, the Edo State Director of Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), a subpoena (witness summon), to appear and testify before the tribunal. The prayer was granted as the witness was asked to appear before the CCT on the adjourned date

The matter has been adjourned till Wednesday, April 3, 2019.

Oh Oh!! Joe Biden Says He Doesn’t Recall Head Kiss Claim By His Accuser

Joe Biden has issued a second statement on Lucy Flores' accusation of kissing her on the head in 2014, again saying he doesn't recall the encounter the way Flores describes it ... but clarifies by saying that in all the moments he's been publicly affectionate with someone, he never thought he was acting inappropriately, adding it was never his intention.

He follows up by saying, "[W]e have arrived at an important time when women feel they can and should relate their experiences, and men should pay attention. And I will." He also promises to remain a strong advocate for women's rights.

Elizabeth Warren says she believes the claims made by Flores, and Biden needs to answer for them.

Biden spokesman Bill Russo has responded, saying ... "People know Joe Biden and they know his character, his integrity and his values. They know him to be someone who is empathetic, caring and who understands their problems and concerns. That’s how he reacts to people and it’s how people react to him."

He adds ... "In fact, some of the people who know him best — people who have worked for him throughout his career — are speaking up to say that he has always been a champion for women in his office."

Joe Biden says he doesn't recall planting an awkward kiss on the back of the head of Lucy Flores ... as he's been accused of by the Nevada politician.

The former vice president and potential 2020 presidential candidate allegedly came up behind Flores and placed his hands on her shoulders, leaned closer and inhaled her hair, then slowly kissed the back of her head in 2014 as the 2 were waiting to take the stage at a rally for Democrats running for office.

Flores -- who was running for lieutenant governor of Nevada at the time --  says she was embarrassed, shocked and confused ... and felt powerless to do anything about it.

She wrote about the encounter in a blog with The Cut, saying ... "Why is the vice-president of the United States touching me?" She continued ... "Even if his behavior wasn’t violent or sexual, it was demeaning and disrespectful."

Biden hasn't outright denied Flores' claims, but says neither he or his staff had any idea she felt uncomfortable at the time ... "nor do they recall what she describes."

The ex-VP says Flores has every right to share her own recollection of events and "that it is a change for better in our society that she has the opportunity to do so."

Biden attended the 2014 rally to support Flores for Liet. Gov. and speak on her behalf. She was defeated by Republican Mark Hutchison.

Anger As Paedophile Footballer Adam Johnson Flashes £100k Watch While He Walks His Dogs

Paedophile footballer Adam Johnson has come under fire for flashing a £100,000 watch while playing fetch with his dogs.

The shamed star was accused of flaunting his freedom after he was spotted boasting the luxury Richard Mille timepiece in a park near his £2million mansion.

Johnson, 31, was pictured with his sister Faye in Castle Eden, County Durham, as he chucked mini footballs for his two cockapoos yesterday.

Despite being locked up for three years, Johnson does not appear to have lost his expensive taste in clothes as he was also wearing Fresh Ego Kid tracksuit, which retail for a hefty £100.

The shamed ex-Man City and Sunderland winger was wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt, leaving his white Bubba Watson watch clearly visible.

The photographs were taken just days after the disgraced footballer walked free from prison.

He was released from HMP Moorland on March 22 after serving half of his six-year sentence for grooming and sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

Tax: Court Orders Arrest Of Monalisa Chinda Again

An Igbosere High Court, Lagos State, on Monday renewed a bench warrant for the arrest of a Nollywood actress and producer, Monalisa Chinda-Coker, over alleged tax evasion.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye renewed the order for the arrest following the failure of the actress to appear in court for trial.

The Lagos State Government had charged her with failure to file annual tax returns and failure to pay income tax in respect of her company, Monalisa Code Productions.

On Monday when the case came up, the defendant and her lawyer were not in court.

The Lagos State Counsel, Babatunde Sumonu, told the court that the bench warrant it earlier issued had yet to be effected.

The judge consequently held that the bench warrant should subsist.

She adjourned the case until June 5 for further hearing.

The court had on January 21 given the order for the actress’s arrest following an application made by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.
