CAN Leaders Who Went To Congratulate Buhari On Their Own – Christian Elders

The National Christian Elders Forum being piloted by General Theophilus Danjuma (retd.) and Solomon Asemota (SAN), has faulted the “congratulatory” visit of the Christian Association of Nigeria to President Muhammadu Buhari on his purported victory in the 2019 general elections, describing it as “morally and spiritually reprehensible.”

The organisation alleged that from “the ill-advised congratulatory visit to President Buhari,”, which it said amounted to subjudice, it should be clear to every Christian of good conscience that the President of CAN, Rev. Sampson Ayokunle “is running CAN as an appendage of the APC.”

According to the elders, the action of the CAN President, was a further confirmation of all their protests and petitions in 2018, querying his faithfulness to Christ and to His Church.

NCEF in a statement by Asemota (who is its chairman) titled, ‘Not on our behalf, CAN President, Not on our behalf,’ obtained by journalists in Abuja on Monday, said such visit was “subjudice” as the determination of who won the 2019 general election “is still in court.”

Apart from Danjuma and Asemota, other members of NCEF are Prof. Joseph Otubu, Gen. Joshua Dogonyaro (retd.), late Archbishop Magnus Atilade, Dr. (Mrs) Kate Okpareke, Dr. Ayo Abifarin, Gen. Zamani Lekwot (retd.), Elder Moses Ihonde, Elder Nat Okoro and Elder Matthew Owojaiye.

Other members included Justice Kalajine Anigbogu (retd.), Elder Shyngle Wigwe, DIG P. L. Dabup, Sir John W. Bagu, Dr Saleh Hussaini, Elder Mike Orobator, Justice James Ogebe, JSC (retd.), Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Chief Debo Omotosho, Dame Priscilla Kuye, Dr S. D. Gani, Mrs Osaretin Demuren, Prof. Yussuf Turaki; late former General Secretary of CAN, Dr. Musa Asake and Bosun Emmanuel (Secretary).

The statement read in part, “It is therefore premature and presumptuous for anyone to congratulate President Buhari for “winning” an election that is contested in court. The NCEF wishes to state that the congratulatory visit to Aso Villa by CAN could not be in the interest of Nigerian Christians who daily bear the agony of thousands of their brethren being killed, maimed, displaced and marginalised in the jihad launched in the northern parts of the country.

“It is well known the indifference of the Buhari administration to the murder of Christians all over the country. This indifference has led many, including foreign observers, to conclude that the Buhari administration is complicit in the genocide that is taking place in Nigeria.”

We May Start Selling Petrol Above N145 – IPMAN

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria has urged the Federal Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to ensure that private depot owners maintain the official ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) at N133.28 per litre.

The Chairman, IPMAN, Ore Depot, Mr Shina Amoo, who said
this in an interview with The Punch in Lagos on Monday, stated that independent marketers might soon start selling beyond N145 per litre if depot owners continued to sell between N136.50 and N137 per litre.

Amoo urged the NNPC to prevail on depot owners not to sell beyond the official ex-depot price in order to enable marketers to sell to consumers at N145 per litre.

He said, “Private depot owners have increased the ex-depot price of PMS beyond N133.28 per litre. We bought a litre of PMS between N136.50 and N137 per litre from private depot owners last weekend. This can affect the pump price at which independent marketers will sell the product, and it will certainly be beyond the N145, which is the official pump price.

“We, independent marketers, are law-abiding. We don’t want to sell above the official pump price and that is why we are urging the government to do something about it and make the product abundantly available. They should monitor private depot owners to make sure they don’t sell above the official ex-depot price of N133.28.

“The NNPC is the sole importer and nobody has the right to increase the price but if they continue to sell to us above the official ex-depot price, we will have no option than to increase the pump price above N145 per litre. The increase in price by private depot owners will eventually push the burden on the marketers and final consumers.”

Amoo lauded the Federal Government for the rehabilitation of the Ilorin Depot of the NNPC while urging it to revive the Ore Depot as well in order to reduce the problem of transportation of petroleum products and to create more jobs in the area.

The NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr Ndu Ughamadu, had in a statement dated March 30 warned private depot owners against increasing the ex-depot price.

He said, “The subsisting ex-depot petrol price of N133. 28k per litre was consistent with the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency’s template and should be adhered to.”

Ughamadu stated that NNPC held stock of over one billion litres, adding that imports of 48 vessels of 50 million litres each had been committed for the month of April alone.

Saraki Opens Up: Why We Didn't Confirm Magu

Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday explained the refusal of the Senate to confirm Mr. Ibrahim Magu as the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Saraki said that Magu’s appointment may have been confirmed but for the failure of the Presidency to explore the established channel of lobby. Besides, he said that “political solution” should have been applied after the Senate rejected his nomination twice.

The Senate President spoke at the orientation programme organised for Senators-elect and House of Reps members-elect ahead of the inauguration of Ninth National Assembly in Abuja.

Saraki said that it is left to the Executive arm of government to find a replacement of any ministerial nominee rejected by the Senate.

Talking specifically on Magu’s nomination, he said that there was no doubt that the Senate has the power to confirm or reject his nomination.

On why the Senate did not go to court for a pronouncement on whether the Senate has the power to confirm the EFCC chairman, he said that there were over 12 court cases pending on the issue.

Saraki, who said that some of the cases had been pending in court for over two years, added that he cannot explain why the cases have not been decided.

He, however, noted that “in cases like the EFCC chairman, there is always the need for political solution and dialogue to solve such issue. But to say whether the Senate has the power to confirm, the Senate has power to confirm. The power of confirmation is there even in America which we copy.

“When the Executive makes appointment, there is issue of lobby. This is why we want a particular nominee. It is done even in America.”

Boko Haram Sets Chibok Village On Fire

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have again attacked a community in Chibok local government area of the troubled Borno state. The attack comes three days after the insurgents burnt houses in Gatamwarwa ward, Chibok.

“They came in through Sambisa forest at about 7pm and they have been setting the village on fire,”
a Chibok resident told TheCable. Kaumutiyahi is at least 13 kilometres away from Chibok.

A military source told TheCable that the Nigeria’s army 117 battalion stationed in Chibok were getting set to move into Kaumutiyahi.

“There is actually a company of army about 6 kilometres from the village under attack, but they would need the support of the larger battalion,” the source said.

In December, the insurgents attacked Makalama, a village in Gatamawarwa ward. Bwalakia villagers were also attacked three days after the Makalama attack, burning houses and leaving villagers stranded.

“They looted and burnt everything we have. We don’t have what to eat and we don’t have where to sleep,” one of the victims had told TheCable.

In November, Abubakar Elkanemi, shehu of Borno, had said the people of the state were still under Boko Haram siege.

As of the time this report was filed, Sagir Musa, army spokesman, had not responded to to TheCable’s message seeking information on the recent attack.

APC Cries Out As INEC Takes Position On Zamfara

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said that it will wait for the Supreme Court before taking any decision on the primary elections of the All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State.

The commission had withheld certificates of return of the state Governor-elect, Alhaji Mukhtar Shehu due to the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Sokoto.

But the APC and the governor-elect, in a letter to the commission last week, said the Court of Appeal did not nullify their primary elections.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, on Monday in Abuja, said the commission was law-abiding.

He said, “The Independent National Electoral Commission is a law-abiding institution. It is the policy of the commission to obey court orders and court decisions.

“The commission took the decision to exclude the candidates of the All Progressives Congress from the list of nominated candidates on the grounds that the party did not conduct primary elections.

“The party has taken the matter to the Supreme Court and it is only rational and prudent to wait for the decision of the Supreme Court before proceeding. The commission took a cautionary approach in suspending further issuance of certificates of return to the members-elect of the state assembly, the deputy governor-elect and the governor-elect. The commission will abide by the decision of the Supreme Court on the matter.”

He added, “The commission does not have any interest in who becomes the governor of Zamfara State but is only interested in the processes and procedures leading to the declaration of results and issuance of certificates of return.

“We are confident that the Supreme Court will conclude the hearing of the matter and deliver its judgment before the inuguration of elected members of the national and state assemblies.

“We believe that the people of Zamfara State deserve to know who their governor and representatives are before the terminal date of this regime.

The commission receives dozens of letters daily. The commission replies letters it receives but takes decisions based on the orders and judgments of courts.

“The commission studies the judgments and takes its decisions based on the judgements and orders and not based on the opinions and decisions of lawyers.”

Meanwhile, the state Governor and senator-elect, Abdulaziz Yari, led other federal lawmakers-elect from the state to an induction course in Abuja on Monday.

Lagos Policemen Who Killed Kolade Have Been Detained

Policemen attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit, fingered in the killing of a soccer fan, Kolade Johnson, in Ikeja on Sunday night, have been detained, spokesman Bala Elkana said yesterday.

The spokesman disclosed this in a statement, saying the team members would undergo internal disciplinary procedures and would be prosecuted if found culpable.

It was gathered that the team had stormed Olu Aboderin Street, Onipetesi, to arrest a man with dreadlocks on suspicion that he was a cultist.

After allegedly arresting their target, the policemen allegedly shot sporadically and a stray bullet hit Johnson, said to be an only child, who was watching Liverpool Football Club versus Tottenham Hotspur match.

An eyewitness said Johnson, who recently became a father, died before he was taken to the General Hospital, Ikeja. This caused a protest, which spread to Mangoro Cement and Dopemu areas of the state.

Elkana said Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu had appealed for calm, adding that the police identified the suspect team based on an eyewitness’ account.

APC reacts as Saraki says senators will decide their leaders

The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has advised political party leaders to allow federal lawmakers to choose their leaders on the day of inauguration in order to achieve stability of the 9th Assembly.

Though he did not mention any party, observers believed he was directing the advice to the All Progressives Congress leadership who has been talking tough.

Reacting to Saraki’s counsel, the APC on Monday evening told him and members of the party to mind their own business in an apparent reference to the Senate President and the Peoples Democratic Party.

Saraki had given this advice during an interview with journalists on Monday shortly after he presided over the first lecture delivered by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, on the overview of the National Assembly structure at the ongoing orientation programme for newly elected federal lawmakers in Abuja.

Saraki decried the politics around the process of electing the presiding officers of the national legislature.

He said, “The point I am making is that we should not make too much noise on the process of electing presiding officers. What is important is for the members of the Senate to decide who is the best to lead them, so that they can have stability.”

Saraki, who was the chairman of the first lecture, also emphasised on the lecturer’s statement that elected lawmakers had no business attending meetings outside the National Assembly on the day of inauguration.

Saraki said, “Don’t go for any meeting on the day of inauguration. I need to tell you that inauguration is held on the floor of the National Assembly. If they ask you to come for any meeting anywhere, tell them that you are not going.”

Declaring the programme open, Saraki reminded the fresh parliamentarians “to exhibit courage in discharging their activities and do what is right, in the interest of Nigerians.”

He said, “Let me add that, since the interest of the people is paramount, legislators must have the courage to follow their own mind, guided by what is right.

“The 8th National Assembly made a lot of interventions on everyday human issues affecting Nigerians, be it unfair price hikes, examination malpractices, and sexual harassment in our educational institutions.

“We also address the drug problem ravaging our communities. I encourage you also to take a keen interest in the welfare of Nigerians, and to be a voice for those in need of similar interventions.

“In carrying out constitutional functions, lawmakers must always recognise that the independence of the legislature is non-negotiable. It is an independent and co-equal arm of government.

“Therefore, it behooves members of the National Assembly to lead the way in asserting the principle of separation of powers, thus ensuring accountability in governance.

“To achieve that, it is expected that members will carry out their duties in a manner that commands that respect from other arms of government as well as the people you represent.”

Saraki urged the new members not to be discouraged by negative perception of the parliament by members of the public but should rather work towards overcoming any negative perception of the legislature in the public.

“The Nigerian National Assembly is far from unique when we talk about this problem of perception. All over the world, studies have shown that the legislature is often the most misunderstood arm of government,” he added.

N’Assembly: Mind your own business, APC tells Saraki
But the APC has asked Saraki and other members of the Peoples Democratic Party to mind their own business as far as the election of principal officers of the National Assembly is concerned.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Isa-Onilu, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents on Monday.

Isa-Onilu said, “The position of the party remains that those positions that belong to the majority party belong to us. Members of the minority party should mind their own business. They should find a way of occupying the positions that belong to them. It is not in their place to start telling us what to do and what not to do.”

PDP backs Saraki, says independence of Senate shouldn’t be compromised
However, the PDP has asked elected members of the National Assembly to ensure that nobody tampers with its independence.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, stated this while reacting to the call by Saraki that members of the National Assembly should be allowed to elect their leaders.

He said, “We want to appeal to the APC not to kill democracy in the country. Leaders of the party should allow the elected lawmakers to pick their leaders.

“The President picked his ministers and others working with him without interference by anyone. He should also allow the lawmakers to elect who they want as their leaders.”

Lawan pledges to accommodate opposition members
However, the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, who has been anointed by the leadership of the APC to contest the position of the Senate President in the 9th National Assembly, pledged to carry all the senators along if elected.

He told journalists at the venue of the orientation that he had started reaching out to the opposition members to ensure a rancour-free 9th Senate.

He said, “We are reaching out to all our colleagues, regardless of their political persuasions after all we are supposed to work together.

“It is not just going to be a Senate for only the APC members. It is a Senate that will consist of the APC, the PDP and the Young Peoples Party. Therefore, we need everybody to support the genuine and laudable course of making Nigeria better.

“I will ensure that our administration is able to deliver laudable projects for Nigerians and the best way to achieve this is for all of us to work together.”Answering questions raised by the newly-elected members on the reasons for the Senate rejection of Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Saraki said the Presidency ought to have followed the standard global practice by either presenting another nominee or employing political solution by lobbying the leadership of the Senate.

Saraki told the lawmakers-elect that the Senate had the right to either confirm or reject presidential nominees in the interest of the nation.

Be courageous, Dogara charges Reps-elect
In a related development, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, advised members-elect of the House of Representatives in the 9th National Assembly to muster courage and work for the country.

He stated that as representatives of the people, if they lacked courage, they would not be able to serve the electorate.

Dogara said this while making remarks at the opening of the orientation programme for members-elect in Abuja on Sunday night.

He said, “I have said that the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly require people of courage… With regard to appropriation, no money will be appropriated or spent in the absence of express legislative authorisation. That means the budget is the work of the Parliament. So this work, of course, requires courage. And we must always remember that as elected members of the National Assembly, let us do the work of the National Assembly.”

He added, “We are meant, as the first institution of democracy, to work with the Executive and the Judiciary. It was never designed that the National Assembly will work for the Executive or work for the Judiciary. That is the aspect that I want all of us to pay attention to as we take oath as members of the National Assembly. We should know that it is about courage.”

Woman Raises Alarm After Finding Out 'R*pe Doll' Is Sold On Amazon

Amazon has been caught selling a "r*pe doll" of a life-size young woman who is bound and gagged.

The £61 doll, which some people claimed looked like a child, was removed from the site following a complaint that it was "nauseating" and being sold for "male s-xual abuse".

Photos show the “adult toy” with its hands tied around its back and a gag over its mouth.

The doll was described as being "flexible" and “safe and easy to clean”.  Buyers were advised not to “worry about twisting or tearing" the doll when using it.

The woman who made the complaint, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Amazon on social media they were selling “a s-x doll of a child, tied at her ankles, wrists, chest and gagged.

"A child, depicted as helpless and terrified in a corner. Sold for male s-xual (ab)use."

She claimed: "The doll is fitted with fully usable, realistic hairless s-x organs and the company is proud that it can withstand the weight of men weighing up to 380 lbs.

“I am shocked to my core that Amazon is selling this. No 'report' button, either!

“It pains me so much that we, as a society, are allowing this sort of thing to be sold at all. It appals me even more that they are sold so openly on a popular, family-friendly site such as Amazon, because that normalises the mentality that demands, creates, sells and buys such utterly nauseating products."

The product description outlines the specific details of the doll which include: “medical non-toxic super soft silicone, feels real. It is like leather without odor, safe and easy to clean.”

As well as describing the dimensions of the product, there was also details regarding how “flexible” the doll is.

Los Angeles Police Have Identified A Suspect In The Killing Of Nipsey Hussle

The Los Angeles Police Department has identified a suspect in the shooting death of rapper Nipsey Hussle.

Eric Holder, 29, is wanted for homicide, the LAPD announced early on Tuesday.

Holder walked up to Hussle and two other men Sunday as they stood outside a business in a strip mall on West Slauson Boulevard, police said in a statement.

He fired multiple times at them and then ran to a nearby alley where a vehicle -- "driven by an unidentified female" -- was waiting for him, police said.

Holder entered from the passenger side and the vehicle fled, authorities said.

Hussle died in the shooting and the two other men were injured and transported to the hospital.

"Detectives have worked tirelessly and are now asking for the public's help in locating the suspect in this case," police said in a statement.

Holder was last seen in a white, four-door, 2016 Chevy Cruze, with the California license plate 7RJD742, the police department said on Twitter.

"Anyone with information related to his whereabouts or this deadly shooting is urged to contact South Bureau Homicide at 323-786-5100."

Immortalize My Son, Sam Okwaraji’s Mum Tells FG

Mother of late Super Eagles player, Sam Okwaraji, has asked the federal government and other relevant authorities not to abandon him but to immortalize him so as to encourage national sacrifice.

Ma Janet Okwaraji who is in her 90s spoke when a delegation from a non-governmental organization, The Compassionate Heart led by Rev Fr Frankline Muo visited her residence in Abakpa, Enugu state to celebrate the 2019 mother’s day with her.

The aging woman regretted that 30 years after her son slumped and died on active duty for the country, nothing had been done to appreciate the selfless sacrifice.

Okwaraji slumped and died while playing for the Super Eagles against Angola at the National Stadium, Lagos in a FIFA World Cup qualifier that ended 1-0 in favour of Nigeria on August 12, 1989.

Ma Okwaraji stated while receiving her visitors that her late son loved the country and did all within his ability to contribute to its growth.

She said: “he excelled as a young boy and combined study with football to the point of pursuing a doctorate degree programme in Germany before the unfortunate incident that claimed his life”.

She stated that she decided to open a school in memory of the late footballer after waiting on the government to “immortalize him to no avail’, pointing out that, she would always remember him “for being a good and hardworking boy”

Christian Elders Fault CAN’s Visit To Buhari

The National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) has described the visit of the President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson Ayokunle, with some CAN officials and Christian leaders to President Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the just concluded 2019 presidential election as shocking.

NCEF disassociated itself from the visit claiming that it is: “sub judice” as the determination of who won the 2019 General Election is still in Court. It is therefore premature and presumptuous for anyone to congratulate President Buhari for “winning” an election that is contested in Court.”

The forum said the visit which was made last week is also not in the interest of Christians.

A statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the  Chairman of NCEF, Solomon Asemota, (SAN) said: “The National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) was shocked to read in the news that the President of CAN, Rev. Dr. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, with some CAN Officials and Christian leaders paid a “congratulatory” visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on his purported victory in the 2019 General Elections.

“The NCEF wishes to state that the congratulatory visit to Aso Villa by CAN could not be in the interest of Nigerian Christians who daily bear the agony of thousands of their brethren being killed, maimed, displaced and marginalized in the Jihad launched in the northern parts of the country. This indifference has led many, including foreign observers, to conclude that the Buhari Administration is complicit in the genocide that is taking place in Nigeria.

“The action of the CAN President, Rev. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, is a further confirmation of all the protests and petitions of NCEF in 2018 querying the faithfulness of Dr. Ayokunle to Christ and to His Church.

Investigation Into Death Of 15-Month-Old At Igando General Hospital Begins

Medical Centre’s Head Nurse Dayo Badmus, who was referred to as Dr. Dayo by a paediatrician with the General Hospital, Igando, Lagos, identified as Dr. Joy, gave the late 15-month-old Taye Adetunji three 20 doses of analgesic injections, a panel heard yesterday.

Badmus, it was gathered, told the Hospital Services Commission (HSC) investigating allegations of professional misconduct and negligence against the doctor that he acted on her instruction.

The child’s parents as well as the doctor in the heat of the controversy were brought before the panel, which sat on Lagos Island yesterday, for them to state their case.

The Nation learnt that Dr. Joy had initially denied knowing the injections Badmus administered to the toddler, but when the latter was called on hands-free phone, he confessed that the actions he took were based on the doctor’s instruction.

Badmus, The Nation gathered, told the panel that Dr. Joy, the owner of the unregistered private clinic, instructed him to administer 20 doses of analgesics three times to the child, adding that he also gave her another injection on her instruction.

Dr. Joy, who had told the child’s mother, Taiwo Adetunji, that her baby needed blood and oxygen, but there was no space to admit her at the General Hospital, Igando; denied referring the patient to her clinic, but changed her statement when the note she scribbled on a discarded duplicate teller was given to the panel.

Giving details of what transpired at the panel, a source said: “When the meeting started, the victim’s mother explained what happened and Dr. Joy was asked to react. She denied referring the woman anywhere.

“The panel was told the family had evidence and the board requested for the evidence. She was asked if that was her handwriting and she answered in the affirmative. Then, she was warned about telling lies. She admitted that she referred them to her clinic and when they asked her the relationship between her and Dayo Badmus, she said she employed him to work for her.

“They asked her questions about what happened that day. She explained and the board told her that from the beginning till the child died, all she did was wrong.

“They asked her if the case was an emergency as she stated. She was asked many questions, but she could not answer them.

“Initially, she claimed she did not know the injections Dayo Badmus administered to the baby. Badmus was called immediately and the phone was put on speaker. He said he carried out Dr Joy’s instructions from the beginning to the end.

“After Badmus told them the drug he administered, they interpreted the drug as 20 doses that he gave three times. The board was very angry with her and assured the family that justice would be done. They assured the mother that they will do everything to ensure such a thing does not happen again.”

The Nation gathered that the nurses on duty at the General Hospital, Igando that Sunday were also invited and they confirmed that they saw the woman and her child.

The nurses, it was learnt, told the panel that they asked the doctor where the woman went to and Dr. Joy told them that she (Taiwo) said she would not stay at the General Hospital, Igando again.

The Public Advice Centre (PAC) and the Child Protection Network (CPN) have petitioned relevant agencies, demanding justice.

Contacted for an update, Health Commissioner Dr. Jide Idris said he was expecting the report of the panel today.

“The panel sat at the HSC board. I gave them till tomorrow (today) to submit their recommendation to me,” he added.

Man Needs N1.5m To Bail Wife, Triplets From Hospital

The birth of triplets is usually considered a blessing, but not for a petty trader, Shola Babalola, whose children and wife have remained in hospital since February 19.

Babalola, a recharge card vendor, needs N1,477,261 million to pay medical bills incurred during the birth of his triplets, as well as daily incubator and other treatments they received from birth till April 3, when they are expected to be discharged.

The man, who said he has spent the capital for his small scale business on medical bills at Ayodele Medical Centre, Iju Road, Fagba, Lagos, is appealing to good spirited Nigerians and the government to assist him so that he can take his family home.

He said: “I do not know what to do anymore. I don’t know how or where to raise the money. If I do not pay, my wife and children will not be released.

“She gave birth on February 19 to three children and they were put in the incubator. The bill for incubator is N7,500 per baby per day. Then, the hospital charged N450,000 for my wife’s (Folasade’s) surgery, out of which I’ve paid N361,000.

“But the bills have accumulated again and the total as at March 21 is N1,185,711. Where will I get that kind of money from? Already, I have spent the capital for our recharge card business to take care of them.

“I have been going to relatives and neighbours to seek support so that we can at least feed, but I am afraid because my family will not leave the hospital when they are discharged if I don’t pay the money.

“This is why I am begging Nigerians to help me. The triplets are our first children. The doctor said they may be discharged this week. I am desperate and helpless. Please, the hospital can be contacted for confirmation. You can see the bills of the babies prepared separately. Please rescue me.”

Pope Makes It Clear! Lionel Messi Is Not God

Pope Francis has said that it is sacrilege for people to call Barcelona great Lionel Messi 'God'.

The pontiff was speaking to host Jordi Evole on the 'Salvados' programme broadcast on Spanish TV channel La Sexta when he was asked about people referring to Messi as 'God'.

Evole asked the Pope: 'Is it sacrilege to say that Messi is God?'

And Pope Francis replied: 'In theory it is sacrilege, you cannot say it, I don't believe. Do you believe you can?'

When Evole replied that he thought it was fine to say that, the pontiff, a native of Argentina like Messi, responded with a laugh and said: 'I don't.

'People say "God" like they say "I adore you". Adoring is only for God, they are expressions people use. "He is a god with a ball on the pitch", they are popular ways of expressing oneself.'

'But look how he plays, eh?' Evole responded.

The pope replied: 'Of course, he brings happiness, but he isn't God.'

The Pope has previously admitted to being a football fan and follows Argentine top-flight side San Lorenzo de Almagro.

Wawu! Nigeria Ranks 6th Most Miserable Country In The World

A report by Steve Hanke, an economist from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, United States, has listed Nigeria, Venezuela, Iran, Brazil and others among the first 10 miserable countries in the world with Nigeria assuming the sixth position.

According to the report, Venezuela was listed as the most miserable country in the world, saying: “Venezuela holds the inglorious title of the most miserable country in the world in 2018, as it did in 2017, 2016, and 2015.”

Iran took third in the ranking while Brazil made it to the fourth position. Turkey took fifth position as the giant of Africa, Nigeria, emerged sixth.

The Misery Index was calculated using economic indices, including unemployment, inflation and bank lending rates.

For Nigeria, unemployment rate was the major contributing factor to its miserable state.

Ibadan Obas To Olubadan: You’re Denigrating Olubadan Stool

Indication emerged yesterday that the rift between the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji and
the promoted Obas in Ibadanland constituting the Olubadan-in-Council may have further worsened.

The aggrieved Ibadan Obas accused the Olubadan of denigrating the Olubadan institution by what they described as “illegal practices and apparent lack of regards for the council”.

The Olubadan-in-Council, speaking through the Otun Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, after a meeting held at Mapo Hall, Ibadan yesterday, said the actions of the paramount ruler called for urgent caution to forestall crisis.

Oba Balogun, who lamented the crisis within the traditional council since the promotion of the new Obas, said it was sad that the Olubadan is destroying the system that brought him to the throne as a king.

He said rather than recognise the position of the Olubadan-in-Council, Oba Adetunji conferred the duties of the entire council on one of his wives, who rules by proxy.

Oba Balogun said: “We want to draw the attention of the people of Ibadan to some irregularities and illegalities embarked upon by the Olubadan. We are members of the Olubadan-in-Council, but we are being sidelined by the Olubadan.

“Against tradition, Oba Saliu is running a one-man show, disregarding the Council. He appoints Mogajis (family heads) and Baales (village heads) without making any recourse to the council. Most of the things that he does are illegal.

“For instance, the Olori is not a member of the Olubadan-in-Council but in his own case, the Olori unilaterally takes decisions on his behalf.

“If Olubadan thinks we do not matter, we also can show that he doesn’t matter without us. He should not forget that when he was to be made the Olubadan, he rose through the council. We (the Olubadan-in-Council) made Olubadan out of him, he did not make us what we are, but we made him the Olubadan.

“Kabiyesi, Oba Adetunji has turned the institution of Olubadan into personal affairs, which can be run at his wife’s whims and caprices, but which amounts to illegality. Contrary to their belief at the Popoyemoja Palace that Olubadan is an authority unto himself, we are telling the whole world that Olubadan only exists with his council.
REad also: Olubadan: new Iyalode to be installed soon

“The danger of what they are doing in the palace has been manifesting in the ridiculous action of appointing two or more Mogajis from the same compound, honouring people with Mogaji title based on friendship as well as ‘cash and carry’ award of Baales to undeserving people.”

Contributing to the Obas’ submission, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi and Oba Hamidu Ajibade said there had been efforts by both individuals and organisations to ensure that peace reigns in the Olubadan-in-Council, but lamented that all such efforts had been scuttled by the wife of Kabiyesi (Olori Rasheedat), who insisted that her husband would not sit with his members of council.

The Obas warned the newly installed Mogajis and Baales in Ibadan not to see their appointment as legal, saying that “their installations should be backed by the council before being recognized”.

The aggrieved Obas were installed as crown-wearing Obas by the Subsidiary Legislation of Recognised Chieftaincies (Miscellaneous Provision) order on Page 389 Cap 28 section 1, 2, and 3 of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State.

What Saraki Told Newly & Returning Senators Yesterday

Below are five key things SP Bukola Saraki asked lawmakers of the 9th National Assembly to do;
1. In its constitutional role, the National Assembly carries out oversight, makes laws and ensures constituency representation. In carrying out constitutional functions, lawmakers must always recognise that the independence of the legislature is non-negotiable. It is an independent and co-equal arm of government. Therefore, it behooves members of the National Assembly to lead the way in asserting the principle of Separation of Powers, thus ensuring accountability in governance.

To achieve that, it is expected that members will
carry out their duties in a manner that commands that respect from other arms of government as well as the people you represent.

2. In Nigeria, the misapprehension as to the role of the legislature is compounded by its being the youngest arm of government in our developing democracy, in a country that is not long out of military rule. The legislature also often appears to be the weakest arm of government. It is therefore necessary to focus on strengthening this important institution. The legislative arm of government must be strong, because when the legislative arm is strong, democracy will be strong.

3. You must be seen to be working assiduously to address issues affecting Nigerians, chief among which are: poverty, inequality, insecurity, corruption as well as empowerment of citizens.

4. Let me add that, since the interest of the people is paramount, legislators must have the courage to follow their own mind, guided by what is right. The 8th National Assembly made a lot of interventions on everyday human issues affecting Nigerians, be it unfair price hikes, examination malpractices, sexual harassment in our educational institutions or the drug problem ravaging our communities. I encourage you also to take a keen interest in the welfare of Nigerians, and to be a voice for those in need of similar interventions.

5. For my part, I am proud to say that the 8th Senate is going out on a high. We have passed 274 Bills in 46 months; and cleared 192 Petitions in the same period. There were major milestones in the area of the economy, with the passing of landmark legislation such as the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA), which is undoubtedly the most comprehensive review of business laws in this country in 30 years. Other gamechanger laws include: Bankruptcy and Insolvency (Repeal and Reenactment) Act, and the Credit Reporting Act.
