Buhari Should Apologise To CJN Onnoghen - ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to apologise to the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen. The party also said it would continue to support the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, in his quest to reclaim his mandate.

The party’s National Working Committee stated this in a communique issued on Tuesday after its meeting held in Abuja.

The ADC faulted the conduct of the 2019 elections. It said that its members, who participated in the exercise, were robbed allegedly through the combined efforts of state institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the National Communications Commission.

The communique, which was read to journalists by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yemi Kolapo, was signed by its Chairman, Ralph Nwosu and the Secretary, Alhaji Said Abdullahi.

The ADC affirmed that democracy in Nigeria could remain relevant through the restoration of the people’s right to vote and elect their political leaders at the executive and legislative organs.

The communique read, “The only way the democratic electoral process can be strengthened to continue to serve as a role model at this stage of Nigeria’s nation building is for the judiciary to continue to play its constitutional role strongly, without fear or favour, in order to stop the excesses of politicians and save the country.

“We, therefore, call on the learned men of the third arm to act to restore power to the people in our democracy. It is in the best interest of every Nigerian that we do not knowingly bring about the obituary of our democracy.

“Finally, we call on President Muhammadu Buhari to tender an unreserved apology to Justice Walter Onnoghen and restore him to his position with immediate effect. Any further progression of the torture of this Supreme Court chief debases Nigeria.”

It added, “The government in power promoted violence, and used the police, military, intelligence agencies and thugs to terrorise innocent citizens and pollute the electoral space.

“There was heavy commercialisation of the process, which involved vote-buying, inducement of electoral officers and ad hoc staff, and other forms of electoral corruption by the incumbent federal and state members of the executive arm of government.

“The cause of democracy was thwarted and the people were denied the right to exercise their mandate. The Nigerian public and international observers are witnesses to the desperation of the Presidency and state governors, and corruption of the entire process.

“As a political party, we abhor fraudulent electoral practices. That is why we were the only party that set up an organisation to address such vices.”

20 Nigerians Facing Death In Saudi Arabia Over Drugs

The Presidency said on Tuesday the execution of a Nigerian woman over a drug-related offence in Saudi Arabia was “pathetic and tragic”. The Nigerian was among four persons executed by Saudi authorities on Monday, according to the Asian country’s Interior Ministry.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who expressed the feeling of the Federal Government, recalled that the woman became the eighth Nigerian to die under similar circumstances.

The SSA, who spoke with State House correspondents in Abuja, disclosed that 20 others were still on death row in Saudi Arabia, besides 12 more already sentenced to prison.

She said the Federal Government was saddened by the fact that in some instances, the unfortunate Nigerians were the victims of drug cartels working with some airline workers.

Dabiri-Erewa said in some cases, drugs were stealthily put in the bags of unsuspecting pilgrims by the cartels only for them to be picked up on arrival in Saudi Arabia.

The SSA added, “We have had cases where truly they didn’t commit the offence. We have appealed to Saudi authorities to make the trials fair, open and ensure that justice is done. Even if you are going to die, you will know that you will die for an offence you committed.

“So, while we appeal to Nigerians going to Saudi Arabia, we know it is tough, obey the laws of the land. Even kolanut is treated as a drug. So, we will continue to appeal to Saudi authorities to treat some of the cases with some form of leniency.

“We have 20 of them (on death row) in Saudi; this is the eighth to be executed and we are hopeful that maybe we will be able to save the others. So, it is pathetic, it is tragic but we will continue to appeal to Nigerians to obey the laws of the land where you are.

“However, we expect the trial to be fair, open and ensure that justice truly is done because somebody is sentenced to death.”

On the five Nigerians arrested in the United Arab Emirates for robbing a bureau de change, she described their conduct as disgraceful and an embarrassment to the country and their families.

The presidential aide gave their names as Chimuanya Emmanuel-Ozo, Benjamin Nwachukwu-Ajah, Kingsley Ikenna-Ngoka, Toochukwu Leonard-Arusi and Chile Micah-Ndunagu.

She said, “These five boys are a disgrace to this country and an embarrassment. So, if the UAE decides to be hard on Nigerians then we will complain that they are hard on us. But we will continue to say that one bad apple should not spoil the whole bunch.”

On the resurgence of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, drug and cult wars involving Nigerians, Dabiri-Erewa said the FG had been intervening through diplomatic and other channels.

Adulterous Wife Kills Friend In Lagos, Attempts To Poison Her Husband

A 38-year-old mother of two, Esther Irawo, who is a resident of No.6 Sule Street, Wera Estate, Ikorodu, Lagos, has allegedly killed her friend, Femi Afolabi, 38, in order to conceal her adulterous life.

Irawo was said to have accused Femi, of informing her husband that he saw her with another man in a hotel and allegedly threatened to deal with him for trying to ruin her home.

The deceased’s father, Adeyemi Afolabi, a 72-year-old retired soldier, said he heard Femi shouting from his room that Irawo was trying to strangulate him, but added that nobody cared to inquire what was going on because of the level of their friendship.

He added that long before Femi brought Irawo and her husband into the house, they had been friends.

The deceased’s mother, Rose Afolabi, said Femi never discussed the issue with Irawo’s husband, adding that somebody else might have done that.

She said the suspect made real her threat by killing her son on Saturday. The Punch learnt that Femi let out a room to Irawo and her husband in the family house when they had accommodation problem a week before he was murdered.

Irawo was also alleged to have earlier attempted to take the life her 31-year-old husband, Ezra Joseph, by poisoning his food. It was learnt that when Irawo served her husband the food, she sat somewhere watching him, but when the man did not eat it, she became confrontational.

It was gathered that she cursed the husband before pouring away the food and dropped their baby on his lap as she fled the house.

Joseph alleged that his wife had been living an adulterous life, adding that he had traced her to different bars and hotels within Ikorodu on several occasions.

Joseph told The Punch that Irawo thought Femi was the one who reported her extramarital affairs to him, adding that apart from few instances when he got to know by himself, other people in the area also told him about her adulterous life.

He stated, “I went to her shop to take my child to a barbershop. While in the barbershop, I saw her walking past. I called her to tell her that I was in the shop with the boy and that when we were through, I would return the child to her. She asked me to take the child to her brother as she would be going somewhere to see a friend.

“When she was going, I followed her but she kept looking back; each time she looked back, I hid myself until I traced her to a hotel that is located in a hidden place.“I met a policeman, who advised me not to confront her but that I should take a bottle of beer, while waiting for her outside the hotel. I did as he advised. Fifteen minutes later, I saw her coming out of the hotel. I told the policeman to look at her. He advised me not to confront her so that I would not commit murder.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Elkana Bala, confirmed the incident. He said the police were on the trail of the adulterous woman who is now on the run.

“We have a report of a woman, who allegedly hired thugs to kill her landlord’s son, Femi Afolabi, for telling her husband that he saw her with a man in a hotel. The woman has been on the run since that day. The police are investigating the matter and are on the trail of the woman,” Elkana added.

Why You Can't Compare Buhari With Atiku - Buhari Media

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has disagreed with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s claim that PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar was better than President Muhammadu Buhari.

BMO, in a statement signed by the Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke said:
“We are completely taken aback that someone who, ordinarily should be seen as an elder statesman, has continued to use his position to try to derail the country from the path of progress.

“We note that while President Muhammadu Buhari has used his four years in office to lay a solid foundation for Nigeria’s sustainable growth, Obasanjo, as Nigeria’s President for eight years created instability by removing Senate presidents and state governors at will.

“It should be restated that throughout Buhari’s four years in office we have not witnessed a state of emergency in any state, and neither has the administration masterminded the unceremonious removal of any Senate president or state governor.

“We also recall that Obasanjo’s era was characterised by unbridled corruption with the introduction of Ghana-must-go bags at the National Assembly. Similarly, Nigerians will not forget in a hurry the monumental sleaze that surrounded the power sector contracts under former President Obasanjo, nor the unethical use of his position to build a multi-billion naira presidential library.”

The group recalled that former Chairman of the EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, had said corruption under former President Obasanjo was worse than the era of the late General Sani Abacha.

It said: “Many Nigerians are also aware that Obasanjo is responsible for the myriad of problems facing the country today, and rather than make recompense for his sins, he continues to arrogate unmerited knowledge and wisdom to himself.
“We consider it totally unwarranted for Obasanjo to deride the person of President Muhammudu Buhari who Nigerians have freely given their mandate for another four years. Former President Obasanjo’s outbursts are, therefore, a distraction, which must be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Nigerians are yet to recover from the corruption that Obasanjo bequeathed to the country, and President Buhari is presently cleaning the Augean Stable. The least Nigerians expect of the former President is to join hands in rebuilding the country from the ruins of PDP’s pillaging over a period of 16 years, eight of which were under Obasanjo.

“We, therefore, consider the remarks of the former President as a face-saving tactic following the defeat of his preferred candidate, Atiku Abubakar at the presidential poll”.

Kolade's Murder: Police begins orderly-room trial of killer cops

The Lagos State Police Command has commenced the orderly-room trial of two of its personnel involved in the killing of a football fan, Kolade Johnson, in the Onipetesi area of the state.

The orderly-room trial commenced on Tuesday at the command’s headquarters.

The command revealed the identities of the affected personnel as Inspector Ogunyemi Olalekan and Sergeant Godwin Orji of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad.

Recall that had reported that some SACS operatives had on Sunday stormed Olu Aboderin Street, Onipetesi, while the victim was watching a live English Premiership League football match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur at an eatery.

The operatives were said to have arrested a man, identified simply as Ismail, who was said to be seeing off his girlfriend to the bus stop, but residents protested against the arrest.

One of the operatives allegedly fired some shots in the air to disperse the crowd, but a bullet hit Kolade where he stood and before he could be rushed to the hospital, he gave up the ghost.

Kolade’s aunt, Mrs Toluwani Lukman, told The Punch that the Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Mu’azu, during a condolence visit to the family on Tuesday, disclosed the decision to subject the officers to orderly-room trial.

She said the CP urged the family to bring eyewitnesses along to the command to testify against the officers.

Lukman said, “The CP was here this morning (Tuesday) to pay the family a visit and he assured us that justice would be served. He said there would be orderly-room trial today (Tuesday) by 2pm and invited us to come along with Kolade’s friends and those who were there when the incident happened and were ready to talk. We want justice to be served.”

Court Nullifies Adeleke's Nomination As Gov. Candidate

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Bwari, Abuja, on Tuesday nullified the nomination of Senator Ademola Adeleke as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the September 2018 governorship election in Osun State.

Delivering a judgment in a suit challenging Adeleke’s qualification
to contest for the office of a governor, Justice Othman Musa held that the plaintiffs were able to prove that Adeleke did not possess the minimum qualification of being educated up to the secondary school level as stipulated under Section 177 of the 1999 Constitution, to be eligible to contest governorship poll.

The judge said though he found from the evidence placed before the court that Adeleke was admitted into Muslim High School, Ede, Osun State in 1976, there was no record showing that he graduated from the school, as his name was not seen in the school’s register in 1980.

Musa added that the results, which Adeleke attached to his form CF001 that he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, was fake, as it was found to be different from the one presented to the court by the Principal of Muslim High School, Ede, where he claimed to have graduated.

INEC had declared the All Progressives Congress and its candidate Adegboyega Oyetola, as the winner of the September 2018 governorship election in Osun State.

But the Osun Governorship Election Petitions, which sat in Abuja, had by its majority judgment nullified Oyetola’s victory and declared Adeleke as the valid winner of the polls.

Before the September 2018 election, two members of the APC, Wahab Raheem and Adam Habeeb, had instituted the suit against Oyetola, the PDP and INEC, accusing Adeleke of not possessing the requisite educational qualification of a secondary school certificate to contest for the office of governor.
They urged the court to, among other things, disqualify Adeleke from participating in the governorship election on the grounds of non-qualification.

Reacting to the judgment on Tuesday, Adeleke’s lawyer, Nathaniel Oke (SAN), expressed displeasure about the verdict, which he said failed to take into account the West African Examination Council certificate evidence tendered before the court.

He said the judge erred by going on his own source for evidence to arrive at his “unjust conclusion.”

Ndume Ignores Oshiomhole, Declares For Senate President

A former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, on Tuesday dared leaders of the All Progressives Congress, including President Muhammadu Buhari and the party's Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, by unfolding his agenda as a candidate for the Senate presidency in the ninth National Assembly.

The party leadership had endorsed the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, as the Senate president. But  despite the stand of the party, Ndume went ahead to unveil his agenda as the next Senate president.

The Borno South senator in a document promised to improve upon the performance of the 8th Senate.

He also pledged to make the office of the Senate President less attractive by reducing the unnecessary privileges attached to it.

The former Senate majority leader pledged to uphold the independence of the legislature and expressed his willingness to “work harmoniously and inter-dependently with the executive without undermining the principle of separation of powers.”

Ndume said he would prioritise and ensure the passage of the Constituency Development Bill to make “constituency projects more transparent, accountable, efficient and effective.”

He said the Senate would agree on timelines for confirmation, passage of bills especially the annual budgets, which he said, would not exceed 90 days from the day of submission.

Ndume added, “We will make laws that will block leakages devise improved means of generating revenue, especially through the amendment and review of our tax laws which will help to reduce reliance on local and foreign loans to finance budget.

“We will run the 9th Senate transparently, through open accountability with full participation of all senators .For example, we will transfer the approving powers of the privileges of the senators like foreign travels, allowances to Senate services committee or a new committee to be known as “ways and means committee.”

He also said that his presidency would uphold the party’s principles and policies and that the Senate under him would make laws and review existing ones in tandem with the APC’s Next Level agenda for Nigeria.

Recall that the APC national chairman, had at a meeting with the House of Representatives members-elect last week, said the party had endorsed Lawan as the Senate president.

But Ndume in his reaction said Oshiomhole unilaterally picked Lawan without the backing of the party.

The spokesman for the APC, Lanre Isa-Onilu, however, faulted Ndume, saying, “The ticket he (Ndume) is holding belongs to the APC and he cannot go and work with the opposition to give what belongs to the APC to the opposition, like it happened in 2015 when the position of the Deputy Senate President was given to the opposition by some desperate former members of the APC.

“Ndume will be wrong to be calling out the party’s national chairman. The national chairman spoke on behalf of the party. And when we talk of the party in this instance, it is not just about the NWC.

“The President (Muhammadu Buhari) was there when he said it. He did not say anything that the President was not aware of. He did not say anything that the leaders of the APC are not already part of.”

Our leaders will take a decision on Ndume, says APC
However, Isa-Onilu on Tuesday said the party hierarchy would meet and take a decision on Ndume’s declaration.

He expressed the hope that the issue would be resolved since negotiation was ongoing.

“The party will look into it and a decision will be taken. Remember that consultation is still ongoing,” Issa-Onilu told one of our correspondents shortly after Ndume made his public declaration.

When asked how soon the party would take a decision on the matter, the APC spokesman said, “We are not putting a timeline on when the decision will be taken."

Ndume, others should be allowed to test their popularity, says PDP
But the PDP on Tuesday called on the APC and the President to allow members of the National Assembly to elect their leaders.

It also said that both the President and the ruling party must allow democracy to thrive in the National Assembly.

The former ruling party insisted that it would be wrong for the APC and the President to force leaders on the lawmakers, saying Ndume and others should be allowed to test their popularity among their colleagues.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, who spoke with one of our correspondents on Ndume’s declaration, however, said that his party had yet to take any decision on who to support.

Secondus said, “We believe in multiplicity of ideas. Democracy is having more than one option. Though consensus is part of democracy, when that is not achievable, every contestant or interested person must be allowed to test their popularity. That is the beauty of democracy.

“It is wrong to force lawmakers or coerce them to follow a particular road or a particular candidate who they do not have confidence in. The President and his party should not plant moles as the leaders of the National Assembly.”

Secondus, therefore, asked the members of the National Assembly, especially the senators, to follow their conscience in choosing who would lead them.

“Senator Ali Ndume and other members of the Senate who are qualified to run for the office of the President of the Senate should be allowed to test their popularity,” he added.

Nipsey ’s Alleged Killer Arrested In Los Angeles

Police in Los Angeles said Tuesday they arrested Eric Holder, the 29-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting of Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle.

Police in Bellflower had first detained Holder before Los Angeles Police Department detectives confirmed his identity, LAPD spokesman Officer Sal Ramirez said.

Hussle’s death, on Sunday, sent shock waves across Los Angeles and the country as city officials, celebrities and fans mourned the loss of a talented musician and dedicated community organizer.

At a news conference on Tuesday, LAPD chief Michel Moore said that police believe the shooting stemmed from "a dispute between Mr. Hussle and Mr. Holder” and that “we believe they were known to each other.”

“It appears to be a personal matter between the two of them, and I’ll leave it at that," Moore said.

According to Moore, before the shooting Holder had allegedly approached Hussle and “engaged in conversation,” before leaving and returning with a handgun. He fired and struck Hussle, along with two other men.

Brunei Implements Stoning To Death Under New Anti-LGBT Laws

Brunei is introducing strict new Islamic laws that make gay s-x an offence punishable by stoning to death.

The new measures, that come into force on Wednesday, also cover a range of other crimes including punishment for theft by amputation.

The move has sparked international condemnation. In a public address on Wednesday, the sultan of the small south-east Asian nation called for "stronger" Islamic teachings.

"I want to see Islamic teachings in this country grow stronger," Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah said, according to AFP news agency, without mentioning the new laws.

Under the new law, individuals will only be convicted of gay s-x if they confess or are seen committing the act by four witnesses.

Homosexuality was already illegal in Brunei and punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Husband Strips Wife N-Ked, Tortures Her For Refusing To Dance For His Friends

A Pakistani husband has been arrested for allegedly torturing his wife by stripping her n-ked, beating her and shaving her head after she refused to dance for his friends.

The disturbing incident came to the attention of the authorities after a woman covered in bruises appeared in a video on social media, identifying herself as Asma Aziz and begging the public for help.

Asma, from Lahore in Pakistan's north-eastern Punjab province, says in the video that her husband Mian Faisal and his colleagues became enraged when she refused to dance for them.

She alleges that they humiliated her by removing all her clothes and shaving her head, then used iron pipes to beat her.

'He took my clothes off in front of his employees. The employees held me as he shaved my hair off and burned it,' she says in the video.

'My clothes were bloody. I was bound by a pipe and hung from the fan. He threatened to hang me naked.'

Asma says that although Faisal was kind and loving when they first married four years ago, after just six months she noticed his behaviour beginning to change.

The mother-of-three says he began to beat her - particularly after drinking alcohol - and often invited his 'vulgar' friends for parties at their house.

In the footage posted on Wednesday, a tearful Asma details how she escaped from the house the day after the alleged attack and managed to get to a police station.

But she says officers refused to register her case because she could not pay a bribe.

She further alleges that they refused to grant her access to medical treatment, insisting that she pay them first.

She said she felt her only option was to ask the public for help, as her parents are dead and she has nobody else to turn to.

After seeing the viral video, Shireen Mazari, the Minister for Human Rights in Prime Minister Imran Khan's cabinet, wrote on Twitter that his office had taken notice and ordered the arrest of two men - Asma's husband Mian Faisal and his employee Rashid Ali.

The leadership of the APC had earlier zoned the position to the South-West Zone and adopted the house leader Hon Femi Gbajabiamila as the choice of the party for the position.

However speaking at his Campaign Headquarters in Abuja, Hon Bago declared that
he was coming out to slug it out this time around to correct the “injustice” the North Central has continued to suffer in the country’s balance of power, lamenting that the Zone had never produced either the Speaker or the Deputy since advent of democracy in the country 20 years ago.

Hon Bago who had been in political camp of President Muhammad Buhari all along said the party had no basis for insisting on a zone that has serially dominated governance in the last 20 years, saying: “What’s the southwest’s contribution to the party’s victory in the last elections compared to that of the North Central? The North Central zone had over 500,000 votes higher, the records are there for verification.”

According to him, “as such, we deserve the position, not only as a state but also as a zone. So nobody can say he wants to expel us from this party. And no one will singlehandedly take over the structure of the legislature as well as the party.

“Apart from the zoning argument, if you say the South must get something, why insist on South West, why not South-South or the South East?

“But then, in terms of representation in the party and government, the South-South has the chairmanship of the party, and the Southwest has VP, what does North Central have? Nothing, so, in the interest of equity, justice and fair play, the party should allow the North Central to have the slot in the dispensation.”

“The South-South, North East, South East and South West have also produced 5 deputy speakers among themselves since 1999. What does the North Central has in the entire equation, and they want us to keep mute? Who’s speaking for the zone that has never been recognised for keeping faith with the party?

“Despite all the crisis and challenges bedevilling the zone under the APC administration, we stayed the course for the party and the president, delivering more than 70 per cent of votes cast.”

On how he would secure the support of the majority of members to secure the seat, Bago stated he intended to collaborate with his colleagues from Niger State and members from the Zone to reach out to the members who also have the belief that the North Central Zone had actually been marginalised for too long.

Also speaking, the Director General of Campaign Organisation and a former member of the House, Hon. Bimbo Daramola stressed the need for the APC to uphold equity in its power-sharing arrangements among the six geo-political zones in the country and be guided by the constitution.
According to him,”we are at this point today where a father who has six children with an equal number of meat in the plate decides to give four to three and asked the remaining three to share two. It’s only a wicked father who does that. Equity demands that when someone has worked very hard, he should be compensated for his hard work.

“Today, the difference between the votes from North Central and Southwest is about 500,000, and nobody seems to be speaking for the zone on the issue of who’s best suitable for the position of speaker, and I say without any equivocation that Hon. Bago is best suited for the post.

“Supporting Hon Bago is also like a Public Relations stunt for the President who has said he’s youth-friendly because Bago is an embodiment of everything youthful, his credentials are of no equal and as white as Sloane.

“He has also stayed with Buhari even when he was nobody working in the Buhari Campaign Organisation TBO – up to the formation of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and the only one to win election from Niger state under CPC.”
