Justice Mohammed Tukur of the Kaduna State High Court, on Thursday, sentenced a businessman, Ugwu Frank, to two years in prison for issuing a dud cheque
Frank’s road to prison began when a complainant petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over a Guaranty Trust Bank cheque of N3.470m issued by the convict in favour of Miagro Limited and dated April 3, 2018, to offset his indebtedness, was dishonoured.
It was gathered that the cheque was not honoured by the bank due to insufficient funds in the convict’s account, while efforts to reach Frank failed.
He was subsequently arrested and arraigned by the EFCC on two counts.
Frank pleaded guilty to an amended charge preferred against him by the EFCC based on a plea bargain agreement dated April 3, 2019.
The prosecuting counsel, M. Lawal, then prayed the court to sentence him accordingly, but the defence lawyer, Nicholas Oche, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, noting that his client was a first time offender.
Justice Tukur considered the plea bargain agreement as well as the plea of the convict’s counsel and sentenced him to two years imprisonment with an option of N100,000 fine on count one and N50,000 on count two.
He also ordered the convict to pay the balance of N1.970m as restitution to the victim on or before August 31, 2019.
The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed that a 25-year-old man, Abubakar Lawan of Shaiskawa village in the Kazaure Local Government Area of the state died on Wednesday after falling into a dam.
The spokesman of the command, SP Abdu Jinjiri, told newsmen in Dutse on Thursday that the incident occurred around 6pm.
Jinjiri said the deceased fell into the dam while trying to escape arrest from personnel of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, who raided the area suspected to be a hideout for drug peddlers.
He explained that as a result, some angry youths attacked the NDLEA officials and set their office ablaze.
The News Agency of Nigeria quoted Jinjiri to have said, “On Wednesday around 6pm, we received a call that some youths had set the NDLEA office in Kazaure ablaze.
“Our officers moved to the scene immediately and rescued the office from being burnt down. However, the youth injured one of the NDLEA personnel.
“The NDLEA officials raided a place close to a dam in the area, where youths were suspected to be smoking Indian hemp and taking other drugs.
“And in the process, one of them, identified as Abubakar Lawan, aged 25, of Shaiskawa village, fell into the dam and drowned.
“As a result of that, some of the youth followed and attacked the personnel, as well as set their office ablaze.
“However, it was only part of the office that was affected.”
The police spokesman added that no arrest had been made so far in connection with the incident.
According to him, investigation into the case is ongoing with a view to arresting the perpetrators of the crime.
The Lagos State Police Command has commenced investigation into the alleged molestation of a four-year-old pupil of the University of Lagos Women Society Nursery and Primary School, Akoka, Lagos.
Matthew, it was gathered, usually pick two other pupils at the school after closing hours on the instruction of their parents.
The driver, in the course of time, was said to have become close to a teacher at the school, identified as Charity Madumere.
Madumere reportedly sometimes left the pupils in the care of the driver.
During the period, the driver was alleged to have molested the kindergarten pupil.
The victim’s father, Ade, who is a lecturer at UNILAG, said he had noticed the closeness of the driver to the teacher and complained to the school authorities.
He claimed that his warning was ignored until his daughter became a victim.
Ade said, “Obviously, this guy had been hanging out in the class for a long time, but I noticed recently and I felt that it was dangerous. I complained through the communications book, which serves as a link between the parents and the school. I expressed concern about having a man in the midst of innocent children.
The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen has resigned from office.
A senior lawyer in suspended CJN’s defence team in his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) told The Nation that Onnoghen put in a resignation letter on Thursday, which he sent to the office of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“I spoke with him a moment and he confirmed that he has voluntarily resigned. He said he did that yesterday,” the source said.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and a former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair on Friday had a private meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. There was, however, no interview after the duo emerged from the meeting.
A prosecution witness on Friday, told an FCT High Court in Apo, Abuja that Senator Dino Melaye, damaged two police property when he forced his way out of the vehicles and attempted to escape.
The police alleged that Melaye while being transported to Lokoia, broke the windshield of the vehicles with his elbow.
The witness, ASP Dennis Agbi, member of the IGP Special Tactical Squad, made the allegation while testifying in the ongoing case of attempted suicide, attempt to escape from custody and damage to police property, filed against Melaye. Melaye, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, is facing trial on six counts of attempted suicide, attempt to escape from custody and damage to police property.
The witness informed the court that while on duty on April 24, 2018, a white-coloured Toyota Hilux with Registration No. MKA 603 GY, was brought for him to record as an exhibit. He further told the court that when he inspected the evidence, he discovered that the right headlight of the van and part of the vehicle bumper were damaged.
The witness told the court that the bumper CER/STS/11/2018B in his records.
After the inspection of the vehicles by the judge, they were admitted and marked as exhibits by the court. The Prosecution Counsel, Mr Jovi Oghojafor, said that the Certified True Copy of the records of the exhibit was not available to be tendered in court.
He further requested for an adjournment, to enable him to bring it at the next adjourned day. Justice Silvanus Oriji adjourned the case until May 16, May 27 and May 28.

A Connecticut woman said Joe Biden touched her inappropriately and rubbed noses with her at a 2009 political fundraiser, becoming the second person in three days to accuse the former vice president of unwanted physical contact as he considers a White House run.
“It wasn’t s-xual, but he did grab me by the head,” Amy Lappos, 43, told the Hartford Courant of her encounter with Biden at a Greenwich, Connecticut, event.
“He put his hand around my neck and pulled me in to rub noses with me. When he was pulling me in, I thought he was going to kiss me on the mouth."
Lappos posted about the alleged incident in a Connecticut Women in Politics Facebook group on Sunday in response to an account by former Nevada state legislator Lucy Flores, who last week accused Biden of kissing her on the back of the head at a 2014 event.
The allegations could endanger a possible 2020 presidential run by Biden, who was vice president under President Barack Obama at the time of both alleged instances. He has been expected to announce a Democratic White House bid in the coming weeks and has been leading the Democratic presidential field in opinion polls.
Asked about the Connecticut allegation, a Biden spokesman pointed to Biden’s statement on Sunday, when he said he did not believe he ever acted inappropriately during his many years in public life and on the campaign trail.
A baby born with her intestines outside her stomach has miraculously survived and is set to celebrate her first birthday.
Lily-Rae Lawrence had to undergo surgery just four hours after birth and spent 150 days in hospital before being discharged last September.
Parents Melissa Thompson and Richard Lawrence, 32 and 34, noticed something was wrong when the 12-week scan showed a 'puff of smoke' outside Lily-Rae's belly.
Doctors diagnosed the baby girl with gastroschisis, a condition that causes her intestines to form out of a hole in her stomach, and it was feared the pressure building up in the organ could lead to a rupture.
Recalling Lily-Rae's condition before it was cured, Richard, an electrical engineer, said: "The stomach was flat on the scan, but we could see something in the picture outside of her belly, her bowels were on the outside.
"It looked like a puff of smoke outside her belly our initial thoughts were pure worry, you get yourself in a panic trying to get your head around it."
"When Lily-Rae was born they planned to put her bowels in a silo bag, which is a plastic bag raised above the belly and from there it takes several days for them to squeeze back into place.
"But it was not a normal case, it was very complicated and required more surgery."
The baby, from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, was born at 36 weeks and five days, weighing 6lbs 2oz, as doctors noticed her intestines starting to dilate which could lead to blockages and rupturing.
Surgeons hoped to reinsert her bowels by wrapping them in a cling film-like material and let gravity naturally force it back inside the body, but they found the condition was much more complicated.
Out of 30cm of intestines outside the body, only 17cm of it was alive. Doctors were forced to remove the dead sections and create two stomas outside Lily-Rae's body.
After removing the dead intestines that had turned black, doctors hoped the remaining section would be able to survive on one blood vessel and regrow.
Lily-Rae had to undergo a third operation, but this time, the parents were told that the 17cm of her 'alive' bowel had miraculously grown to more than 23cm and parts of it had untangled.
The large intestine that was also in the clump had all survived as well.
Lily-Rae was discharged after 149 days in hospital and has since gone on to living like a healthy baby.
Melissa and Richard praised the doctors who helped their daughters overcome the odds. And now she is set for her first birthday.

Saheed Sobade, a Nigerian, has been nabbed with 1,183 grams of cocaine powder in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, senior special assistant to the president on foreign affairs and diaspora, made this known while speaking at a programme on Arise Television on Friday morning.
This is just days after Saudi Arabia executed Kudirat Afolabi, another Nigerian, for drugs.
“I have bad news for you. Just yesterday, in the midst of the cacophony of 20 to be killed, eight have been killed, another Nigerian was caught with cocaine in Jeddah,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
“He was caught with 1,183 grams of cocaine powder. As he was arrested, the mission was informed and his name is Saheed Ayinde Sobade.”
On Thursday, the federal government condemned the execution of Afolabi — a widow and mother of two — who was executed on April 1.
The ministry of foreign affairs said the Saudi authorities did not inform the Nigerian mission in Saudi Arabia of the arrest and prosecution of the deceased Nigerian.
Dabiri-Arewa added that the Saudi authorities do not spare any country when it comes to drugs.
However, she called for fair trial, and also appealed to Nigerians back home not to “tribalise crime, no matter what.”
“It’s a sad commentary that at this point in our lives we are tribalising crime. Crime is crime. We should not debase the green passport,” she said.
A young newlywed returning from her honeymoon died in the sky after an airline pilot repeatedly refused a doctor’s requests to land, court papers claim.
Brittany Oswell’s family say a doctor on board the flight from Honolulu, Hawaii, requested that the plane land three times after the 25 year-old new wife suffered a pulmonary embolism, a potentially fatal blood clot blocking an artery between the heart and lungs.
But Metro UK reports that the American Airlines pilot reportedly refused to divert flight during the April 2016 medical emergency, it is claimed.
Oswell stopped breathing in the air, and was taken to Baylor Medical Center in Texas as soon as the jet landed. The aspiring nurse, who had just married husband Cory Oswell, died in hospital three days later.
Brittany’s family are now suing American Airlines, saying the flight should have been diverted, and that a faulty defibrillator on board further hindered her chances of survival.
Her mom Tina Starks, from Columbia in South Carolina, told the Honolulu Star Advertiser: ‘She needed that plane to land so she could get care from an actual hospital, not on the flight.’
Explaining the heartache caused by her daughter’s sudden death, Tina added: ‘You never get over this. You know how to manage your pain and that’s a daily, hourly, minute-by-minute process. You have to live in a reality that you don’t want to participate in.’
The late Brittany’s father Chris Starks also hit out at American Airlines for not responding to them beyond acknowledging their lawsuit after Brittany’s death.
They want flight attendants to receive minimal medical training and regular tests performed on on-board medical equipment to ensure it is working.
The case was transferred from a court close to their South Carolina home to Fort Worth in Texas on March 27. A judge explained that locating the case close to where Brittany died, and near American Airlines’ headquarters would make it easier to facilitate witnesses. A trial date is yet to be fixed.
A container truck has slammed into as much as five vehicles in a community in Lagos state, causing quite some commotion in the area and leaving a number of people shaken.
Reports show that the accident happened today at the Ojuelegba area. It was revealed that a container truck failed brake and rammed into the cars, with everything happening so fast.
There were no casualties as everyone escaped unhurt, but some of the vehicles were badly damaged.
Deborah Ighiwiyisi Agbonayinma, daughter of the Chairman House of Reps Ad Hoc committee on Pension, has been sacked after it was discovered that she has been working with the National Pension Commission (PenCom) with fake foreign and local university degree certificates.
A source at the National Assembly, who pleaded anonymity, said Deborah Agbonayinma was sacked about four weeks ago. She worked at the commission for three years with the fake certificates.
Her father Hon. Ehionzuwa Johnson Agbonayinma is representing a federal constituency in Edo State in the House of Representatives. According to The Nation, a source said Miss Agbonayinma worked in other government agency with the fake certificates before joining PenCom.
PenCom confirmed that she was sacked on February 27.
In a phone conversation with The Nation, Agbonayinma who spoke on his Committee’s probe of Pension Fund Administrators, declined comment on the allegations against his daughter.
Miss Agbonayinma’s curriculum vitae with which she was employed in PenCom stated that she obtained a B.Sc degree in Accountancy with certificate number 12129 on August 8, 2012 from Irish University Business School located on 219 Bow Road, London E3 2SJ.
Funny enough, a verification committee at PenCom, however, found that no such university existed as a valid UK degree-awarding institution.
Having learnt that her 'fake' foreign degree has been exposed, Miss Agbonayinma brought another degree in Accountancy to the Commission as a replacement from Olabisi Onabanjo University, which the university also disclaimed as fake.
A probe of the documents showed that the Accountancy degree with 09083854 as a matriculation number was not listed as part of her academic qualifications in the original curriculum vitae submitted to PenCom, when she was employed.
The Olabisi Olabanjo University (OOU), in Ogun State, in a letter dated February 6, 2019 and signed by the University’s Principal Assistant Registrar in charge of Exams and Records, Mrs O. L. Kaka, told PenCom that Miss Agbonayinma’s academic records and transcripts were fake.
Her CV showed she was mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) from 2014 to 2015, but details are still sketchy on the certificate she presented to the NYSC for the mobilisation.
The CV also showed that she served as an Accountant in the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Development in Edo State during her Student’s Industrial Work Experience Scheme (Scheme) from June 2008 to November 2008 one year after she [allegedly] enrolled to study Accountancy in London in 2007.
PenCom said: "We confirmed through the UK government’s site that the university is not recognised as a valid degree-awarding body.”
This is heartbreaking. A UNILAG-trained medical doctor, Dr. Urueye Stephen aka Sarutobi, has been killed just 24 hours after his graduation. He graduated from the University of Lagos on Tuesday April 2nd, before he was stabbed by some robbers.
It was gathered that Dr. Urueye Stephen aka Sarutobi, a House Officer at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, was walking along Idi Araba road when he was accosted by the robbers who stabbed him before carting away his properties found on him.
His friend and former UNILAG SUG president, Adeyeye Olorunfemi, wrote on Facebook;
'And we lost Stephen. We lost this young Doctor who wants to save lives to insecurity. He died 24 hours after his graduation. After 8 years of struggle in the jungle called Nigeria.
