We Followed All Legal Procedures Before Executing Nigerian Woman - Saudi Embassy

The Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia yesterday said it followed all legal and judicial procedures before implementing the death sentence on a Nigerian woman, Kudirat Adesola Afolabi.

It also clarified that the executed lady was accorded every legal right before the death sentence was carried out on her.

It said all accused persons subjected to the legal process in Saudi courts of law are allowed access to lawyers to litigate for them.

The embassy made the clarifications in a statement in Abuja against the backdrop of protest by the Federal Government on the execution of the woman.

The statement said: “With reference to the statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, as published on the cover page of “The Nation” newspaper of 3/4/2019, titled “Fed Govt kicks as Saudi Arabia executes Nigerian,” the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, Abuja, clarifies as follows:

“The embassy affirms that all legal and judicial procedures were followed regarding the accused person and she was accorded every legal right before the death sentence was carried out on her.

“All accused persons subjected to the legal process in Saudi courts of law are allowed access to lawyers to litigate on their behalf, and the kingdom avails itself the responsibility to provide lawyers for any persons that have no financial ability to do so.

“All convicted persons on whom the death penalty has been carried out in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have gone through trials characterized by the legal guarantee of justice to their cases because the kingdom’s judicial system is established on objectivity and is dependent, in terms of its rules and regulations, on the Islamic Law, which has always restored rights to their owners and done justice to the victims. This is what the kingdom has always affirmed.”

The embassy insisted that its judicial system was always painstaking.

So Sad! Husband Kills Wife, Buries Her In Their Room

The Kano State Police Command on Friday paraded a 20-year-old man, Aminu Inuwa of Jakada Quarters, for allegedly slitting his wife’s throat. He was also said to have buried the corpse of the 17-year-old victim, Safara Inuwa, in his room.

Confirming the incident, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, said on April 3, 2019 around 11:00am, the police received a report that Inuwa killed his wife with a knife.

According to the PPRO, Inuwa and his late wife had a dispute during which the suspect slit her throat and buried her corpse in his room.

However, he said the police exhumed the body and took it to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano for autopsy.

Haruna said the police had commenced investigation, adding that the suspect had confessed to committing the crime. He said, “The suspect is in our custody. He will be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed.”

Oshiomhole Says PDP Won't Get Anything... APC Begs PDP To Support Lawan As Senate President

Leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress have started reaching out to senators and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in a bid to stop the PDP members in the Senate from either contesting or supporting other senators to occupy leadership positions in the 9th National Assembly.

Specifically, the APC chiefs are lobbying the PDP leaders and lawmakers to support their move to make Ahmed Lawan the next Senate President.

APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, had said the party did not need the opposition party’s votes to clinch the presiding and principal offices of the 9th Assembly.

However, sources within the APC told The Punch that the APC leaders who had earlier called the PDP senators’ bluff, over the leadership of the Senate changed their tactics when they discovered that the division among their party members in the Senate was real.

Apart from Lawan, two other APC senators, namely Danjuma Goje and Ali Ndume, have indicated their interest in becoming the President of the Senate in the 9th Assembly.

Subsequently, the senators have been moving round to gain the support of the opposition senators for their ambition.

An APC senator-elect told The Punch on condition of anonymity in Abuja that the party leaders had tried to convince Goje and Ndume to drop their ambitions without success.

The source said the party leaders’ decision to ‘anoint’ Lawan as Senate President without wide consultations had caused a great division within the party and among the senators-elect.

It was learnt that both Goje, who was a two-term governor of Gombe State, and Ndume had been working behind the scenes to outsmart Lawan by secretly forming alliances with the PDP.

A source close to Goje confided that the senator was playing his cards close to his chest. The APC senator-elect, said, “Goje is a very experienced and tactical politician. He understands the politics of the chamber better and he knows that making noises on the pages of the newspapers would not help any of the aspirants.

“He is not disobeying the leadership of the party by making up his mind to contest against Lawan. He is only exercising his rights as a ranking senator whose geopolitical zone has been asked to produce the Senate President.”

Asked if Goje was targeting the 41 bulk votes of the PDP, the source said, “Anything is a possibility.”

He, however, ruled out the possibility of the Gombe senator picking a PDP senator as his deputy.

Efforts made by The Punch to speak with Goje to confirm or deny his interest in the Senate presidency and his alleged pact with the PDP failed as of the time of filing this report. He did not answer calls to his mobile line or respond to the text message sent to him.

However, Ndume, who has already constituted various committees to realise his dream, confirmed to one of our correspondents on Thursday that he was still in the race.

The Borno State-born lawmaker also said nobody had so far discouraged him from exercising his rights.

However, Ndume, who said he had the backing of many people within his party, said he would congratulate Lawan if he defeats him.

He said, “It is within my constitutional rights to contest the election. It is not as if I’m disrespecting the party, but people should be allowed to elect their leaders.

“I’m in the race till the end. If Lawan wins this election, I will be the first person to congratulate him.”

The Punch learnt that some of the APC senators-elect who were loyal to Lawan held separate meetings with the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and Oshiomhole on the tension  in the upper chamber.

They were said to have told both leaders that the best way to ensure victory for Lawan was to reach out to influential members of the PDP within the upper and lower chambers.

One of the sources said, “I can confirm to you that all of us are involved in the lobbying. We know that Goje and Ndume will contest against Lawan but we are not taking chances. We need PDP senators to win and we are already talking to them.”

Lawan told journalists during the week that he needed PDP votes and that he had started reaching out to them.

It was on the strength of this, one of our correspondents learnt, that APC leaders began holding meetings with their ‘friends’ in the PDP.

A senator-elect from Ekiti State, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, however, told one of our correspondents in an interview that it would be against global parliamentary norms and practices if any PDP senator decides to contest the Senate presidency on inauguration day.

He said, “Nigerians have given the APC the majority of the seats in the Senate and they expect the party to control the Senate.

“Nobody should therefore try to subvert the will of the people by trying to play any game or create a division, even among the majority party, such that the will of the people, freely expressed at the polls, could be subverted.

“I do not expect any PDP member to contest the leadership positions meant for the party with the majority seats during the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly.”

PDP senators weigh offers from Goje, Ndume, Lawan
Following intense politicking, consultations and meetings, PDP senators have started weighing the offers from the camps of Lawan, Goje and Ndume.

It was learnt that the PDP leaders and senators had yet to conclude on whether they would endorse one of the three APC candidates or field their own candidates for the Senate presidency and other presiding offices.

Indications are that some PDP leaders and senators, especially those from the North, favoured Goje.

A PDP ranking senator told The Punch that his colleagues were studying the offers. He said no definite decision had been taken on who the opposition members would support.

He said, “We have four options at the moment. We have three offers to support one of the three aspirants. The fourth offer is to bring out a candidate among the PDP ranking senators. We are still studying them. We had yet to ‘anoint’ any of them.”

How Man Drugged, R*ped His Neighbour's Daughter

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a tricycle rider in the Ijegun area of the state, Opeyemi Alamu, for allegedly administering drugs on a 13-year-old girl and defiling her.

Alamu had reportedly lured the girl, Joy (real names withheld), to his house at Bank bus stop, Ijegun, around 6:00pm when her grandmother, whom she lived with, was not at home.

City Round learnt that the 23-year-old man entertained Joy with a drink in which he had put a substance suspected to be a sedative. She was said to have slept off after taking the drink.

It was gathered that Alamu then removed her dress and had s*x with her. The girl’s mother reportedly became worried when she returned home around 8:00pm and couldn’t find her. The woman was said to have raised the alarm, which prompted some people to join her in searching for Joy.

It was learnt that a neighbour tipped the search party around 12:00am that she saw the girl with Alamu. Some men, who reportedly visited the man’s house, met his door locked but heard his voice from the room. They were said to have forced the door open and caught him in the act.

He was handed over to officers at the Isheri Osun Police Station and the Family Support Unit of the Ikotun Division from where the case was transferred to the Gender Unit of the state police command headquarters in Ikeja, the capital.

The 13-year-old victim told the police that she was at her grandmother’s shop on Saturday, March 9, 2019 when the suspect approached and asked her to follow him to his house to get a drink.

The girl said she was reluctant to take the drink until Alamu assured her that he meant no harm.

She said, “The man’s house is close to my grandma’s shop. He gave me a soft drink but I did not want to take it. He then asked me if he couldn’t give me something. I reluctantly collected the drink and drank it. That was the last thing I knew until I found myself at my grandmother’s house the following day. I felt pains in my stomach and private parts when I got home.”

In his statement, Alamu, a native of Osun State, owned up to the offence but claimed that the girl got drunk at a birthday party held in the community that day.

He said he met Joy on his way to visit a friend in the area and she agreed to follow him there, adding that he had s*x with her at the friend’s house and not his room.

He said, “I am a tricycle rider and shuttles the Ijegun-Ikotun route. I buy foodstuffs from the girl’s grandmother. That was how she and I began to talk.

“That Saturday, I saw her at Bank bus stop and told her that I was going to my friend’s house nearby. She decided to followed me there.

“On getting to the place, she slept off because she was drunk. I was not the one who gave her the drink. She took it at the birthday party.

“While she was asleep, I had s*x with her. Some men came around 12:30am and started knocking at the door. They met her n*ked and started beating me. They later handed me over to the police.”

A police prosecutor, Inspector Ben Emuerhi, brought Alamu before an Ogba Magistrates’ Court on eight counts bordering on abduction, defilement and unlawful use of drug.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Hamzat, did not take the defendant’s bail. She held that a duplicate of the case file be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice while the defendant be remanded in prison custody. The case was adjourned till May 9, 2019.

Mixed Reactions Trailing Onnoghen Resignation As CJN

Walter Onnoghen’s resignation as Chief Justice of Nigeria was greeted with mixed reactions from senior lawyers, the Peoples Democratic Party and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Onnoghen, who was suspended on January 25 by the Federal Government for failing to declare part of his assets, tendered his resignation to President Muhammadu Buhari late on Thursday.

Surprisingly, the letter was sent to Buhari barely 24 hours after the
National Judicial Council reportedly recommended Onnoghen’s compulsory retirement from service after investigating the allegations of misconduct levelled against him.

Although the suspended CJN’s spokesman, Mr Awassam Bassey, has yet to officially confirm his resignation, two Senior Advocates of Nigeria defending him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal confirmed to one of our correspondents on Friday that Onnoghen had reisgned.

Bassey did not answer calls to his phone by one of our correspondents. He did not also respond to text messages sent to him.

But Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), who is Onnoghen’s lead defend counsel at the CCT, where he is being prosecuted for false and non-declaration of assets, said, “I have just spoken with him. He confirmed to me that he resigned voluntarily yesterday (Thursday). He told me he resigned in the interest of the judiciary.”

According to Awomolo, Onnoghen must have taken the decision following the recommendations of the NJC, which have yet to be made public.

“He took a decision after the NJC which has the power under the Constitution to take a decision, has taken a decision.”

Mr Rafiu Lawal-Rabana (SAN), who led Onnoghen’s defence at the NJC, said although he had yet to speak with his client, he had confirmed that he had voluntarily resigned from office.

“The man has voluntarily retired. Although I have not seen him or spoken with him, it is confirmed that he has voluntarily resigned,” Lawal-Rabana told The Punch late on Friday.

Asked if Onnoghen’s resignation had to do with NJC’s recommendations, he said, “No, It does not have to do with it.” But he said he had “not seen the report by the NJC”.

Lawal-Rabana added, “Up till now we don’t have the report.”

It was learnt that the Federal Government would require two-thirds majority of the Senate to remove Onnoghen from office, according to the Constitution.

However, a Lagos lawyer, Mr Jiti Ogunye, described Onnoghen’s resignation as “appearing to be an afterthought and escapism”.

The Federal Government on January 11, 2019 filed against Onnoghen six counts, including failure to declare his assets between June 2005 and December 14, 2016.

The rest of the five counts bordered on the allegations that the suspended CJN made false declaration of his assets on December 14, 2016 by allegedly omitting to declare his domiciliary dollar, euro and pound sterling accounts as well as his two naira accounts, all maintained with Standard Chatered Bank (Nig.) Ltd. Onnoghen had pleaded not guilty to the six counts.

SANs express divergent views
Reacting to Onnoghen’s resignation, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr Olisa Agbakoba SAN, told Saturday PUNCH that Onnoghen could have decided to call it quits in the interest of the judiciary.

He said, “Without judging whether the CJN was right or wrong, because I cannot speak on that, I think it has come to a point where he would have decided that in the interest of the judiciary as an institution, it was better that he removed himself.

“I see the resignation as a no-liability resignation, which means without accepting that he had done wrong. I haven’t read the (resignation) letter but that is my thought. The issue had become messy and so a time would come you would say to yourself that if I’m the problem in the way of the judiciary, I would step down and deal with the issues I’m facing as a person, so as not to allow this to disrupt the judiciary. If that is what he has done, I applaud and salute him.”

Agbakoba said even though some people would suggest that he should have resigned earlier.

He added, “People who say he could have done that earlier could have a point, but it is never too late. The important thing is that he has done it. I think I would have done it earlier. But he may have decided to ride it out but he has now seen that he could not resist the forces against him, because clearly, as far as I’m concerned, even if he has done something wrong, the entire process has been politically motivated, without question. That cannot be denied. So, I applaud and salute him for taking himself out of the process.”

While expressing sadness over the matter, another SAN, Prof Awa Kalu, said he had no doubts that Onnoghen’s resignation was inevitable.

Kalu said, “I have to say that I am extremely sad because a good career has come to an end in a way that not all will acclaim. I don’t think that the majority of the people who have watched the travails of the learned chief justice will come to an inevitable conclusion, that is to say that justice has been served.”

Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) said, “Onnoghen was virtually hounded out of the judiciary and of the seat of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, not because of any offence that has been proved but, I genuinely believe, because of one, where he comes from, his ethnic group; two, his religion; three, the fact that he was too unbending to accommodate the excesses of the executive arm of government; and four, because he was not even considered to have been fit to occupy the position in the first instance. That was why the President never agreed to confirm his appointment many months after the Senate had okayed him until the President travelled and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo had to do the unthinkable. And I also think that the cabal never forgave Osinbajo for that.”

But the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof Itse Sagay (SAN), described Onnoghen’s resignation as “embarrassing and shameful”, saying he ought to have left as soon as the allegations were raised against him.

Sagay said, “It’s disappointing because he should have done this thing (resign) since January when the news came out that he failed to declare some of his assets. He should have done it instead of going to court and embarrassing himself and the whole country.”

However, another SAN, Dr Babatunde Ajibade, said it would be premature to comment on Onnoghen’s resignation without knowing what the NJC recommended after probing the corruption allegations against him.

FG frustrated Onnoghen –PDP
The PDP said  Onnoghen decided to resign because the FG was frustrating him. The Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Diran Odeyemi, also said the development had created bad image for Nigeria.

Odeyemi said, “It is a pity that the FG has frustrated Justice Onnoghen out of office therefore achieving a premeditated plan against the topmost hierarchy of the judiciary. Nigerians obviously have not heard the whole story of why Onnoghen is being persecuted. But we are sure that very soon the fear of the APC government and the reasons behind the orchestrated plan will be revealed.

“The whole world is watching and it is unfortunate the negative message we are passing with the treatment meted out to officials of the judiciary being third arm of government will definitely affect our rating in the comity of nations. We wish Justice Onnoghen happy retirement.”

Group S*x Saga: Male Colleague Recovered On Top Female

Some students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, who live at Sunshine Castle Hostel, Ihiagwa said that one of the three students, who died after allegedly engaging in a group s*x fuelled by an overdose of Tramadol and Indian hemp, was found dead on top of his female colleague, who has been identified as Onyinyechi Okafor.

Chibuike Oguoma, who spoke to The Punch during a visit to the hostel where the tragedy occurred on Tuesday, said that while one of the victims was recovered on top the female victim’s body, another male, also a victim, was found in the bathroom holding a soap.

Describing the development as shocking, Oguoma said that the caretaker of the hostel alerted them to the ugly development. According to him, the sudden death of the three students was devastating.

While urging security agencies to dig deep and find the actual cause of their deaths, he said that it was hard to believe that the drugs taken were what led to their deaths.

He said, “It was the caretaker who called and when we went to the room, we found one of the boys on top of the girl. He was already dead. The other one was found dead in the bathroom. He was holding a soap in his hand. The police were alerted and came and carried all the bodies away. Indian hemp and Tramadol were found in the room.

“Two of them had died before we opened the room, while the other two were rushed to the hospital. We want police to do a thorough job in finding out the real cause of their deaths.”

The room where the tragedy occurred has been locked, while the area wore a mournful look.

Spokesperson for FUTO, Uche Nwelue, told The Punch that the university was still investigating the matter, adding that the names of the victims were yet to be ascertained.

Imo Public PRO, Orlando Ikeokwu, disclosed that the surviving victim is in a stable condition.

#Fvckyouchallenge: Tonto Dikeh Wades Into Seyi Shay, Victoria Kimani's Beef With Tiwa Savage

Lol. A lot of people think it’s not cool how Seyi Shay and Victoria Kimani slammed Tiwa Savage in their fvckyouchallenge cover, making many wonder how Tiwa Svaage has so many enemies. Speaking about the challenge, and not mentioning any name, Tonto wrote;

''WOMEN YOU ARE YOUR OWN WORST ENEMY!! HARD GIRLS, HARD GIRLS, Small prick we don start to fight each other!! #smh #I TRULY SHLD BE A MAN IN MY NEXT LIFE #DISGUISTED#''

Victoria Kimani ONLY Seeking Attention -Ycee

Ycee has slammed Victoria Kimani saying she is only seeking attention. Recall during the week, the Kenyan born singer had slammed Ycee and Tiwa Savage in her fvckyouchallenge cover. Saturday Beats reached out to Ycee’s camp, and he spoke through his manager, Aquari, saying, they were shocked to hear the song, as both Ycee and Kimani are friends and not once, has she said to him that he stole her song.

“We heard the song Victoria Kimani sang claiming that we stole it from her but I think she was just chasing shadows.

“She did not reach out to us before now because she heard the song she claims Ycee stole from her several times before it was released.

“They are both artistes and friends so she was privileged to hear the song several times before it was released.

“She was looking for a free promo that is just basically what she was doing. If you go online, you would read the response of people to her accusation. That is the industry for you.

“Why take your issues to the social media when you have each other’s telephone numbers? Her accusation has come to us as a shock that she would call Ycee out for such a thing.

“How can she claim that someone stole her song? It is just funny. At the moment, Ycee is very busy working on his album; in fact, he is putting finishing touches to it. Once it is done, everyone would know about it,” he said.

How I Made My Money – Mr Eazi

Hip-hop star, Mr Eazi, has opened up on how he had to leave the comfort his parents provided for him to chart his own path in life.

The musician whose real name is Oluwatosin Ajibade, gave an insight into how he graduated from a school in Ghana at the age of 18 but instead of coming back to Nigeria to get a job decided to start various businesses which failed.

He said, “I would not lie and say that my childhood was tough. People define silver spoon differently but one thing I would say is that my parents always made sure I had everything that I needed.

“I went to good schools, so obviously I was not suffering but in finding my own path, I started to experience struggles.

“I have a Master’s degree in Engineering and Business Management but I decided to become an entrepreneur so I had to suffer by myself.

“I had to go through gold mining, distribution of beverages in Ghana and also having my phone company in Nigeria. I did all of that out of my own volition.

“If I had stuck to my parents’ plan, I could have finished school and got a proper job. I had job offers but I chose my path.

“I could have toed my father’s path because he is an engineer and working in the aviation sector. I could have been in that sector but I chose my path.

“When you choose your path, you struggle. To be honest, my parents were pressured to compel me to get a proper job.

“For instance, I graduated from the university in 2011 and I was not even 19 years old at the time.”

Speaking further on his struggles before hitting the limelight, Eazi said, “After my National Youth Service, I moved back to Ghana but the business failed. The next thing I did was to tell my parents that I had another bright idea and it was to sell sausage rolls. That also failed shortly.

“The businesses I tried my hands on would gradually be successful but at the end it would fail because I had no experience.

“After that, my parents tried to talk me out of business but I told them that I had another bright idea and it was to be making and selling Sharwama. That also failed.

“My father later advised me to do my MSc. He felt it would buy me some time to know what I wanted to do.

“So, I obtained my MSc. at Coventry University, Ghana. I could have concluded my Master’s programme in a year but I had another bright idea. I went into illegal gold mining but I was able to complete school.

“Obviously, by 2015, the whole family wanted to do an intervention on me except my father. Everyone put my father under pressure so he gave me a timeline, which was April 2016 to get my acts together. “As God would have it, by March 2016 I had kicked off my music career and I was in London having my tour.

“By the end of 2015, my phone company had kicked off in full scale and I had employed about 20 people. That is how much struggle I passed through to make my money,” he said.

Former Governors In Strong Move To Take Over 9th Senate

One thing is becoming a trend in the Nigerian political space. Powerful state governors after serving out their term, now see the Senate as their next destination. In the Eight Senate, 2015-2019, 15 former governors were elected senators.

The governors will maintain their grip in the Ninth Senate,
as about 15 of them scaled through in the 2019 National Assembly election, and will join others to begin legislative activities, after President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurates the National Assembly in June.

They include: two ex-governors of Abia Orji Kalu and his successor, Theodore Orji, incumbent governor of Borno, Kashim Shettima, ex-governor of Ebonyi, Sam Egwu, ex-governor of Gombe State, Danjuma Goje, among others.

Opinion, is, however divided on whether the former governors will make a difference in the senate. Some commentators opined that the governors’ mission in the senate is to feather their political nest.

Others, however, said that the former governors would add value and quality to legislative debates because of their wealth of experience.

Chief Egwu Chima, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ebonyi, described the election of the former governors into the senate as a welcome development.

Chima, former Commissioner for Information and State Orientation in Ebonyi, said ex-governors would bring their wealth of experience to bear in the legislative activities in the senate.

Chima said that former governors who served creditably in their respective states deserved a chance to go and show-case their leadership prowess at the senate.

According to him, former governors have acquired enough experience that could be harnessed to advance the nation’s democracy through viable and qualitative representation.

He said: “The best way for any governor that has served for eight years is to go and take a seat in the senate. The work load and expectations of the people on you as a governor are completely absent, the person will have full time to carry out his legislative functions.

“If after serving as a governor and you retire to your house, you may decay fast, lose political relevance and may even die early.

“As a lawmaker, the ex-governors will be able to direct their focus to the nation with the experience that they have gathered over the years on how to build strong, united and virile democracy.

“I can tell you categorically that it is pertinent that former governors should go to senate after serving their states where their wealth of political, leadership and administrative experience will be utilised.”

He advised ex-governors who are senators-elect from the different political parties to carry their experiences from their various sections of the country into the larger Nigeria.

Prof. Jonah Onuoha of the Department of Political Science, University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, who spoke on the issue, also see election of more former governors to senate as a welcome development and something that would boast legislative performance.

Onuoha who is also the Director, Institute of American Studies in the university, noted that the presence of more ex-governors who had acquired experience in governance would be an added advantage to the Ninth Senate.

“These governors have acquired experience and know the needs of the people. With their wealth of experience they are in a better position to sponsor bills that will address the needs of the people in their states since they have first hand information about them.

“Also with their connections as former governors they will use it to attract quality democracy dividends to their districts. To me, I see the election of more former governors into the red chamber as a welcome development, as well as a boost to the 9th Senate,” he said.

The director said he did not subscribe to opinion in some quarters that the senate had become a retirement home for former governors as well as a shelter to avoid harassment from the EFCC.

Prof. Aloysius Okolie, also of the Department of Political Science, University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, however, held a contrary opinion.

He said that majority of these former governors were going to senate just to remain politically relevant and not to give quality representation to their people.

“These former governors are going to senate just to remain politically relevant because some of them did not perform very well in their states, and that will not change in the senate.

“Some of these governors in the 8th Senate did not sponsored any bill or done anything extra-ordinary,” he said.

The former Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, UNN chapter, alleged that some of these former governors were rushing to the senate to avoid harassment from EFCC.

“Some of these governors are going to senate as retirement home as well as a shelter against the harassment of EFCC.

“Some of these governors were in government for eight years and could have allowed others to represent the district.

“They have piloted affairs of their states, any development they did not bring to their people as governors, I doubt if they can do that as senators,” he said.

In the same vein, Dr Paul Okorie, former Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transportation in Ebonyi, said that the former governors were driven by the desire to maintain their grip on the political space in their various states.

Okorie said that some of the former governors that served in the previous senate did not show enough political fire work and quality representation, stressing that they were in the senate to feather their political nest.

He decried the development and urged ex-governors who were elected as senators to place the interest of the country and their constituencies above personal considerations.

“They should put the interest of the nation first, think more of their constituents and to remember first and foremost that their constituents are the people that elected them into the senate.

“They should bring their experience as former governors to bear in the legislative process and thereby advance our democracy,’’ Okorie said.

Chief Abia Onyike, a former Commissioner for Information in Ebonyi, said the new culture of going to the senate is a manifestation of former governors’ reluctance to leave office.

According to Abia, former Deputy National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, governors wield enormous powers under the 1999 Constitution, while former President Olusegun Obasanjo once referred to them as ‘emperors.’

“The new culture of going to the senate is a manifestation of their reluctance to leave office.

“It has nothing to do with qualitative contribution to law making, in advanced democracies, you decide the direction you want to follow, either law making or governance.
“That was why we saw people like Edward Kennedy, who spent over 32 years in the senate and was known as the ‘Lion of the Senate.’

“The new generation of governors in Nigeria engages in endless search for relevance after leaving office. They are never satisfied with the opportunities they had, the reason is that the areas they governed were glorified provinces, after the balkanisation of the old regions into miniature states and the challenges of governance have become more intractable.

“Many of them cannot satisfy the aspirations of the people, coupled with the powerful enemies they make while in office, they are constantly in need of a sanctuary, which some of them find in the senate,’’ he noted.

F-SARS Arrests Ajimobi's Ex-Aide For Withholding N18.5m Meant For Election

Godwin Obode, former Special Assistant on Youth and Student Matters to Abiola Ajimobi, Governor of Oyo State, has been arrested. SR learnt that Obode was picked up by men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) some days ago following his refusal to return the N18.5million he received from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State for the general election but did not spend.

Obode worked for Ajimobi in his first term as Governor but subsequently resigned with the explanation that he wanted to relocate abroad.

He later went to work for Teslim Folarin, a two-term PDP senator who contested (and lost) the 2015 Oyo State governorship election on PDP’s platform before joining the APC in 2017.

However, towards the 2019 election when APC was fearing a bad performance, the party engaged Obode to run the election in Okeogun and Oyo town.

“Ajimobi gave him money to mobilise students as security cover for the election,” a senior party figure who asked not to be named, told SR.

“They gave him N18.5million for the election, but they later found out that he didn’t do anything; he was just having fun, drinking, on election day. They were even calling him to get field reports on election day, but they couldn’t get him.

"The problem now is that despite the best efforts of the Governor to recoup the money, Obode doesn’t want to return it.”

When SARS officials searched his house last week, they found the bag with which the N18.5million was delivered to him. The bag still contained a leftover sum of N9million.

Obodo was then arrested but later released, though he still has to report at the F-SARS office regularly.

SR learnt the “security cover” in the brief to Obode was actually “election violence”. According to a party source, it was “to disrupt voting at polling units where the process doesn’t favour the APC”.

Photos Of Alleged Top Nigerian Cultists Nabbed In Italy

A Nigerian man believed to be a member of the Supreme Eiye confraternity has been arrested by the authorities in Treviso area of Italy.

The 34-year-old suspected gang leader who has an Italian resident permit was arrested along with some of his gang members following investigations into criminal activities ranging from prostitution, human trafficking among other vices.

It was learnt that an investigation into the gang’s activity in the area was launched after a young Nigerian girl said to be a victim of s*x trafficking exposed the suspects to the police.

Also, several violent attacks have been recorded by the group in order to stamp their authority in the region. Last year, security operatives arrested a group of Nigerian cultists believed to be part of a drug and criminal syndicate near Cagliari area of Italy.

The suspects, said to be members of Supreme Eiye Confraternity, were nabbed following investigations by the police who raided their apartments.

Drugs, money and other items including their cult materials were recovered from the suspects’ houses after a search operation was conducted by the officers.

Here's How APC Reacted To CJN Onnoghen's Resignation

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said on Friday that the resignation of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen has vindicated the action of the President and the stand of the party who earlier called for his resignation.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu told newsmen that the resignation of the suspended CJN would have been the first step for him to take when it became obvious that he made a mistake of not properly declaring his assets as required by law.

He said with the CJN standing trial for none declaration of assets and the previous trial of the Senate President for the same purpose, it is gradually becoming clear to public office holders that there is nobody above the law in the country.

Onilu said a time is coming when a President who misbehaves will also be docked for wrong doing, stressing that all those who criticised the President for obeying the ruling of the Code of Conduct Tribunal will now realise that their action was not in their interest of the country.

Onilu said: “The issue we have in this country is that, many people, especially those who have been part of the impunity of the past are struggling badly to adjust to the reality of rule of law. That is the major issue we are facing in this country.

“There are so many struggles to allow the past. It is not good enough for us as a country to allow it go. All of us must rise and face the future; a future of promise and a future of change, so that we can move to the ‘Next Level’.

“When this happened, the PDP and some of their allies in the Civil Societies read the barometer of politics and we do know that, until we rise above sentiments, no matter what part of the divide you find yourself, we must realise that this as an issue that has to do with our country. That is the only way we can progress.

“We knew right from the beginning that what the allegations against the former Chief Justice of Nigeria were too serious to be swept under the carpet and we know that the President does not act on frivolities.

“He must have done his background checks and must have gotten good information to have taken the action he took especially when there was basis for the action that can be legally proven.

“Those lawyers, so-called Senior Advocate of Nigeria who had over the years dip their hands along with some of these judicial officers into the till of this country, continued to lampoon the President, lampoon the APC and blaming this government that is doing its best to right several of the wrongs that we have been used to.

“We were actually the one trying to deepen democracy and this party rose in the defense of the President because we understand what the President was doing and that he meant well, and we know the real purpose that drives his actions.

“Now, events have proven the President right. Events have proven the party, APC right. Events have proven those Nigerians who believe Nigeria first and any other things after – events have proven them right.

“We all can only be hiding behind one finger, otherwise we knew Nigerians, reasonable Nigerians knew from the word go that those allegations were not cooked up and if they were real, the next thing for the CJN to have done was to have stepped aside. If he had done that, the question of, he wouldn’t be the only one, why he should not have arisen? There is nowhere in the world where judgment is passed on every sinner at once.

“It is not every armed robber you can catch the same day. And even some you know, the slow pace of justice may not catch up with them immediately, but we must continue to see evidence that we are moving towards that sanity and that we are making progressive efforts and sending strong signals to people who think this country must continue as long as they are comfortable and the rest of Nigerians are suffering. We must send that signal to them that it is not going to be business as usual.

“Now, you have seen the head of National Assembly, Senate President in the dock. Now, you have seen the CJN in the dock. So, one day, we will see a President that will also misbehaves, in the dock which now shows that nobody is above the law and that we are all equal before the law.

“So, anybody who finds himself in any position should now begin to look closely at his own actions knowing fully well that today may protect him but tomorrow may expose him.”

Trump Tweet Trolls Biden's Apology

President Donald Trump yesterday deployed his trademark blend of crude humor and Twitter to mock potential election rival Joe Biden's apology for having touched women without permission.

Biden, an undeclared frontrunner for the Democratic nomination to take on Trump in 2020, had earlier tweeted a short video earlier in which he promised to respect "personal space" more in the future.

Trump responded by posting a doctored version of the video in which a fake image of Biden creeps up behind the actual Biden and puts his hands on his shoulders.

"WELCOME BACK JOE!" Trump writes above the video.
