Lagos Keeps Tinubu, Others' Huge Benefits Secret

The Lagos State Government has refused to disclose how much it has so far spent on houses, vehicles and huge allowances of its former governors and ex-deputy governors.

The Punch had in December 2018 written a letter to the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, requesting to know how much of taxpayers’ money had been spent on former governors and former deputy governors based on the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension) Law No 11 official Gazette of Lagos State, 2007.

Specifically, The Punch asked for the amount that had been spent on purchasing houses and vehicles for all former governors and deputy governors and other allowances paid to them from 2007 to December 2018.

Repeated calls to the Commissioner for Information, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, proved futile as he asked the correspondent to give him more time.

Subsequent phone calls and text messages were not acknowledged by the commissioner.

The Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension) Law No 11 official Gazette of Lagos State, 2007 states that former governors of the state are entitled to a house each in any location of their choice in Lagos and Abuja.

Section 2 states, “One residential house each for the governor and the deputy governor at any location of their choice in Lagos State and one residential house in the Federal Capital Territory for the governor on two consecutive terms.”

The state has built houses for former governors of the state in Lagos and Abuja in line with the law. A house was bought for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Ikoyi and the Asokoro area of Abuja.

Houses have also been built for former Governor Babatunde Fashola, who is now the Minister of Power, Works and Housing.

Others who are benefitting from the law are former deputy governors Femi Pedro, Abiodun Ogunleye, Sarah Sosan, and Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and his deputy, Oluranti Adebule, are expected to be added to the list of beneficiaries once their tenure expires next month.

A former governor is also entitled to six new cars every three years, 100 per cent of the basic salary of the serving governor (N7.7m per annum), as well as free health care for himself and members of his family.

The law also says former governors will be entitled to furniture allowance, which is 300 per cent of their annual basic salary (N23.3m); house maintenance allowance, which is 10 per cent of basic salary (N778,296); utility allowance, which is 20 per cent of the salary (N1.5m) and car maintenance allowance, which is 30 per cent of the annual basic salary (N2.3m).

Other benefits include entertainment allowance, which is 10 per cent of the basic salary (N778,296) and a personal assistant, who will earn 25 per cent of the governor’s annual basic salary (N1.9m).

The law adds that a former governor is entitled to domestic workers comprising a cook, a steward, a gardener and others whose appointments are pensionable.

A former governor will also be entitled to eight policemen and two officials of the Department of State Services for life, according to the Lagos law.

However, the law does not state how much can be spent on building houses, procuring vehicles and health issues.

The information was what necessitated the FOI request.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria had, in its 2018 Accountability Index, scored Lagos just 29 percent on government transparency.

The state government has repeatedly ignored FOI requests, insisting that the Act only applies to Federal Government agencies despite a judgment by a Court of Appeal last year that the FOI Act is applicable to all states in Nigeria.

'Pastor Adeboye Stopped Me From Quitting 2nd Term Race'

They prayed for me with all the challenges that accompanied the race, I became the governor and I was sworn in.In 2017, challenges came over me and I said I was not going to contest again in 2019, let me remain a one–term governor. The following day during my devotion, God told me why do I decided to be a lone ranger and I decided to consult God and God told me He is the first and the last, the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. I picked up the courage, came to the altar and Daddy G. O. again, he prayed for me.

“But so many challenges came as we went through the race and there was this particular day before the election that G. Oh Dear! Helicpoter Blade Chops Off Head Of Nigerian Air Force Pilot

Nigerian Air force officers involved in the fight against insurgency suffered a setback on Sunday as the rotor of a helicopter killed an officer simply identified as Umar.

The aircraft was said to have developed a fault. The deceased, who was the co-pilot, had gone to the pick his bags and on his way back, he passed through the side of the rotor which was functioning.

“Immediately his head was chopped off.”

An airman, who witnessed the very tragic incident, told TheCable that it happened at Bama in Borno state on Saturday evening.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred around 4pm. The source said family members of the deceased have been informed while the burial arrangement was on as of the time this report was filed.

Dogara In Quiet Move To Defeat APC, Emerge Speaker Again

Ahead of the June 6 inauguration of the 9th National Assembly (NASS), the race for the Speaker of the House of Representatives is getting interesting as incumbent Speaker, Yakubu Dogara is strategising to cash in on the self-inflicted discord ravaging the APC, to retain his seat.

Reliable sources told The Guardian that the Speaker, who may be in possession of a trump card, is quietly reaching out to the 123 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members-elect and a section of APC members, who are occupying key committee positions in a bid to curry their support. Dogara, who has maintained studied silence on his ambition, had through his aide on media and public affairs, Malam Hassan Adamu Turaki, said he won’t be dragged into talks on the speakership, but would rather occupy himself with the task of serving out his tenure successfully.

However, moves by members-elect from the North Central and South East geo-political zones to take a shot at the speakership may sound the death knell for the ruling party’s zoning of the seat to the South West geo-political zone.With unfolding developments, there is the likelihood that contest could get unmanageable when the 9th NASS is inaugurated in less than 60 days, because lawmakers from both zones insist that APC’s decision smacks of insensitivity to the need to adhere to the principles of federal character aimed at ensuring equitable distribution of positions of power in the country.

The North Central Caucus Stakeholders led by Mr. John Dyegh (APC, Benue) faulted the APC’s stance, wondering why the speakership should be zoned to the South West even when the number two citizen, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, comes from there.They anchored their position on the provisions of Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which says: “The composition of the Government of the Federation or any of its agencies shall be carried out in a manner as to reflect the Federal Character of Nigeria, thereby ensuring that there shall be no predominance of persons from a few ethnic or sectional groups in that government or any of its agencies, in order to command loyalty and peaceful coexistence.”

Lawmakers that have so far delared interest in Dogara’s job include; Ahmed Idris Wase (APC, Plateau), Muhammed Umar Bago (APC, Niger), and Nkeiruka Onyejeocha (APC, Abia). They said they are better placed to take the seat than Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, who is the preferred choice of APC. Wase’s candidacy is already gaining grounds among lawmakers from the zone, who argue that he stands out in view of his years of experience, commitment to the party, sense of organisation and leadership qualities.

Moreover, Wase known with the sobriquet “Maje,” remains one of the strong pillars of the APC in Plateau State, with his constituency consistently voting for President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC in all elections.Beyond his native Plateau State, other lawmakers say record of service in his three terms (from 2007 to date) speaks loud for him.

As a member of different standing committees in the 6th, 7th and the current 8th House, such as Emergency & Disasters, Environment, Capital Market, as well as the Federal Character, which he chaired twice, Wase’s contributions accelerated the passage of numerous executive bills such as the Companies & Allied Matters Act (Amendment) Bill 2018, and the Deep Offshore and Inland Basins Production Sharing Contract (Amendment) Bill 2018.

These contributions seem to endear him to his colleagues, resulting in his elevation to the position of Deputy Leader of the House after the demise of Umar Buba Jibril, early last year.Bago, a second termer at a cocktail he hosted for new and returning House members in Abuja noted: “I won’t be in this race in the first place if this position was zoned to the South East because I will see equity in it, but for it to be zoned to South West there is no equity at all.

Feelers, however, reveal that APC may fall back on Wase to ensure that Dogara does not spring a surprise by cashing on the determined efforts by lawmakers from North Central. A former House member, Mr. Lumumba Dah-Adeh, who is more predisposed to Wase’s emergence, explained that the current configuration of the country’s political structure favours the North Central to produce the speaker.

Adeh, who represented Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency from 1999 to 2003, said Wase possesses the quality of a high-class lawmaker with the capacity to effectively preside over the House.Nevertheless, Gbajabiamila, who remains the candidate to beat is being endorsed by most members of the North West and North East geo-political zones who occupy over one third of seats in the 360-member lower legislative chamber.

FG Suspends Mining In Zamfara, Orders Foreigners To Leave Immediately

The Federal Government has announced the suspension of all forms of mining activities in Zamfara, and ordered all foreigners engaged in mining activities to leave the state within 48 hours.

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, who disclosed this when he addressed State House correspondents yesterday, said the order was part of measures to check banditry.

The IGP addressed the correspondents alongside the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari; Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi; and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Rufa’i.

Adamu stated that the suspension of mining activities followed “intelligence report that has clearly established a strong and glaring nexus between the activities of armed bandits and illicit miners — with both mutually re-enforcing each other.’’

He, therefore, revealed that the Federal Government has directed as follows:

“Mining activities in Zamfara and other affected states are hereby suspended with immediate effect.

“Consequently, any mining operator who engages in mining activities in the affected locations henceforth will have his licence revoked. All foreigners operating in the mining fields should close and leave within 48 hours,’’ he added.

The Police boss assured the general public, especially those in the affected areas, that the security services are doing their best to address the situation.

He maintained that as part of sustained efforts to flush out and permanently put an end to banditry and criminality in Zamfara in particular and the North West in general, the Police in collaboration with the military and other security services had commenced Operation Puff Adder, a full- scale security offensive against the bandits.

“The operation is aimed at reclaiming every public space under the control of the bandits, arrest and bring to book all perpetrators of violence in the area and their collaborators, achieve a total destruction of all criminal camps and hideouts, mop up all illicit weapons fueling the violence and attain a full restoration of law and order in the affected communities.

“Our commitment at protecting the sanctity of life and property is irrevocable, and we will not scale-down the pressure on the armed bandits until they are totally flushed-out,’’ he said.

Lagos Fire Service Chief, Others Kidnapped

Kidnappers on Saturday night whisked away the Lagos State Fire Service Director Rasaki Musibau and about nine others along the Epe-Itokin road, Ikorodu.

The incident, it was gathered, occurred while the fire chief and others were returning to Lagos from Epe.

The Nation learnt that the kidnappers had blocked the Itokin bridge, ambushing occupants of a Sienna, Corolla and a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).

In another incident, residents alleged occupants of an interstate bus were also kidnapped after the vehicle dropped off some passengers along the road.

Woman Dies After Jeep Plunges Into River In Ogun

A private Lexus Jeep on Sunday plunged into the river on Ijebu-Ode/Benin Expressway, killing a woman and injuring her daughter, an official has said.

 The Public Relations Officer of Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed this to the Newsmen in Abeokuta.

Akinbiyi said that the accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. and was caused by speeding. He said the driver of the Lexus Jeep, with registration number JJJ 930 FL, a woman, lost control while on motion and plunged into the river near. “I learnt the vehicle was coming from Lekki in Lagos to Ijebu-Ode when the accident happened.


“There were two occupants in the vehicle; the driver who is a woman and her daughter, who is a student of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijebu Ode. “The woman was taking her daughter back to school. As a result of excessive speeding, the woman lost control of the vehicle and plunged into the river.

 “The driver, who is the woman and mother of the lady lost her life, while the daughter sustained injuries,” he said. Akinbiyi said the ‎corpse had been deposited at Ijebu Ode General Hospital mortuary while the daughter was receiving treatment at same hospital. He said the vehicle had been removed from the river and deposited at the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) in Odogbolu, Abeokuta.

Zamfara : FG Orders Foreigners To Quit Mining Sites

The Federal Government on Sunday ordered foreign miners to vacate mining sites in Zamfara States and its environs with immediate effect.

The Federal Government also announced the suspension of mining activities in the state so as to curtail the activities of the armed banditry that have been terrorizing the people of the place.

Briefing State House correspondents at the presidential villa Abuja, the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, said that any foreign miner that continues mining activities would have his license revoked.

American Airlines Sued Over Newlywed's Death After Pilot 'Refused To Divert Plane'

The family of a newlywed nurse who died on a flight home from her honeymoon are suing the airline, according to court documents.

Brittany Oswell was travelling between Hawaii and Texas in April 2016 with her military husband Cory when she collapsed in the plane toilet.

According to a lawsuit filed against American Airlines, the 25-year-old lost conciousness several times while in the air.

Flight attendants and a doctor on board tried to save her life by giving her CPR after allegedly pleading with the captain to make an emergency landing.


But the captain allegedly refused after getting advice from an on-call doctor on the ground.

Four hours after she first passed out, the plane landed in Dallas and she was rushed to hospital.

She was declared brain dead three days later, after suffering a pulmonary embolism and cardiac arrest.

Brittany's family is suing American Airlines over their daughter's death, saying the flight should have been diverted and faulty medical equipment on board further hindered Brittany's chance of survival.

What kind of spirit pushed this woman into such crazy act? A nurse, Elizabeth Mwewa, has confessed her sins on her sick bed as she asked God for forgiveness. What did she do?

The nurse who used to work at The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Zambia confessed that she has exchanged over 5,000 babies at birth during 12 years of service.

"I have terminal cancer and I know I will be dying soon. I wish to confess my sins before God and before all the affected people especially those who were giving birth at UTH during my service."

According to the elderly woman, she is now born again and did not want to hide anything.

"I have nothing to hide, In the 12 years I worked in the maternity ward at UTH, I swapped close to 5,000 babies," she confessed. Mwewa added that it became a habit and she used to do it for fun while acknowledging that she has sinned against God and man and would want them to forgive her.

"I know I sinned against God and may he forgive me for that. I am also asking Zambians to forgive me for the evil things I was doing to innocent children. I have caused some faithful couples to divorce after going for DNA Tests," she said.

She put the blame on the devil whom she claimed used her to commit the sins she's most regretful about.

"I have caused many mothers to breastfeed children who are not theirs biologically. I don't want to go to Hell for that, I'm really sorry I have sinned a lot. Please forgive me," she begged.

Mwewa also added that kids born between 1983 to 1995 at the hospital should check themselves if they look different from their other siblings. “If you were born in UTH between the years 1983 to 1995, chances are your parents may not be your biological parents. I had developed a habit of swapping newly born babies just for fun," she said.

"So take a good look at your siblings, if for example everyone is light and you are darkie... you are that child and I am really sorry for that," she added.

Imagine me, being a young or vulnerable gay man, still struggling with my sexuality as either a Christian or Muslim. Still being hunted by the fear of hell fire and opening my inbox and receiving this kind of message from someone who doesn’t know me but think that he/ she is doing me a favour by indicating that hell fire is my portion?

We Have No Deal With CJN Onnoghen - Buhari Presidency

There is no deal between the Presidency and embattled Justice Walter Onnoghen on his exit as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), The Nation learnt last night.

Onnoghen who had been on suspension since January 25 following unsubstantiated allegations against him by the EFCC and the Presidency, turned in his letter of resignation on Thursday.

It is said that the Presidency wanted him to resign as they can't remove him through the senate.

But according to The Nation, highly placed Presidency sources said yesterday that at no time was a deal reached between the seat of power and Onnoghen or his representatives on how he should leave office.

Sources said his ongoing trial for non-declaration of assets would run its course.

There was anxiety yesterday over his fate at the Code of Conduct Tribunal which is handling the case.

Some forces in government are said to be pushing that the trial should go on, some members of the bench and the bar are in support of the NJC decision that Onnoghen be retired.

A top source at the CCT said the tribunal will go ahead with its sitting on April 15 unless there is a notice of discontinuance of the trial from the prosecutors.

Oshiomhole Slammed By Reps Members and Senators

Some returning and newly-elected members of the National Assembly have said the various committees of the federal parliament will not be allocated to only members of the APC.

The National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, had basted openly that only his party members would be in charge of most committees in the National Assembly.

But the lawmakers warned Oshiomhole against interfering in the affairs of the legislature.

They stated this in separate interviews with The Punch at the ongoing orientation organised for incoming members of the 9th National Assembly.

The Chief Whip of the House of Reps who's an APC member, Alhassan Garba, said;
“The national chairman of the APC, with due respect, may not always be right. This is a parliamentary institution only for the legislators. Even in our own rules, we don’t create situations whereby only the ruling party members will constitute the committees. So, it can’t be winners-take-all (thing). When we come to sharing of committee headship, certainly many committees will go to the opposition party.”

Ndume Shuns Tinubu; Insists On Becoming Senate President

The race for who becomes Senate President in the coming 9th Senate is still open. Last-minute attempts by the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, and other party leaders to pacify Senator Ali Ndume to drop his bid for the Senate presidency may have flopped.

Investigations revealed that the leadership of the party and some influential senators met last week and decided to reach out to Ndume, who is contesting the position against Senator Ahmad Lawan.

Ndume reportedly rejected moves by Tinubu to make him drop his ambition.

Details of how it all happened were still sketchy as of Saturday while Ndume who could confirm or deny the development, did not answer calls put across to him.

However, a senator told The Punch on condition of anonymity that a group of Pro-Lawan senator who travelled to Maiduguri on Friday returned to Abuja on Saturday evening without achieving their mission.

He said the group of senators had planned to meet Governor Kashim Shettima, also a senator-elect, but were disappointed when they could not meet with him.

The senator said, “The governor, who was probably aware of the Pro-Lawan senators’ visit, travelled out of the country before their arrival.

“The lawmakers decided to meet the deputy governor, who is not a stakeholder in the project. During the brief session, the deputy governor told the lawmakers that Shettima had travelled to Saudi Arabia.”

Shettima, who is from the same state with Ndume, is believed to be one of the major backers of the former Senate leader for the position.

The pro-Lawan senators-elect would have used the opportunity of their visit to convince Shettima on the need to respect the choice of the party by supporting Lawan.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the APC is facing a dilemma following the insistence of some senator-elect to contest the Senate presidency despite settling for Lawan for the job, The Punch has learnt.

Tinubu had said those not in support of the party’s zoning arrangement for the National Assembly positions were free to leave the party.

Speculation is rife that the party may expel any member who decides to move against its stand. But a member of the APC National Working Committee, who spoke with The Punch on condition of anonymity on Saturday, said, “The truth is that for now, the issue of expulsion for our members who are threatening to move against the party’s choice is not on the card.”
