Kodak Black Apologizes For Disrespecting Nipsey's Widow, Lauren London

Rapper Kodak Black went viral yesterday, when he made what many are calling "disrespectful" comments towards the late rapper Nipsey Hussle's widow, Lauren London.

Nipsey, 32, was murdered last Sunday in what police are calling an "assassination."

Kodak filmed a video less than a week after Nipsey's death, where the 21 year old rapper "shot his shot" at Nipsey's widow. In the video, Kodak said that he wanted to give Lauren a "shoulder to cry on." He then claimed that he planned on entering into a romance with the grieving widow.

Kodak now says he's sorry.

Yesterday the 21 year old Florida rapper Kodak Black made a video on Instagram Live, where he appeared to "shoot his shot" at Nipsey's widow Lauren London.

Kodak can be heard saying, "Lauren London's that baby though. She's gonna be out here single. She's gonna be a whole widow out here."

The 21 year old continued, "I'll be the best man I can be for her."

But Kodak added that he intends to be patient. He told his friend, "She probably needs a whole year to be crying and sh*t."

He claims that he's going to reach out to Nipsey's widow, and ask tell her that he can be a "shoulder to lean on."

Here's Kodak apologizing:

Kanye West Honors Nipsey During Sunday Service

Kanye West is the latest huge star to pay tribute to Nipsey Hussle ... and he did it with his Sunday Service.

Ye was holding his weekly outdoor concert Sunday, but a point during the show, he played audio of Nipsey's voice delivering some inspirational words about encouragement over music that was beginning to build.

The choir and live band took it from there, as they start to play out what sounds like a hymn for Nipsey. You can also see North West getting into the vibe too.

Kanye's shout out to Nipsey follows J. Cole dedicating an entire song to the LA rapper during his inaugural Dreamville Fest Saturday. Big Sean held a special moment for Nipsey as the same event.

There's gonna be a memorial service for Nipsey at the Staples Center on Thursday.

What Buhari's Last 4 Years Did To Nigerians

Bloomberg, in its new report stated that one of humanity’s most hopeful developments in recent decades has been the drop in extreme poverty. But said Nigeria needs growth to defuse poverty time bomb. While describing President Buhari’s record over the last four years as discouraging, the New York-based international news agency wondered if he “is up to the task” of reviving the economy.

Noting that in the year 2000, over 1.4 billion people lived at or below the global poverty line of $1.90 a day, the editorial wrote; “Today, the number is about 600 million. This remarkable change is mainly due to growth in China and India. Much of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Nigeria, has failed to share in the success.

“A decade ago, Nigeria had far fewer people in extreme poverty than either China or India; today, according to data compiled by the World Data Lab, it has more than both combined. The count stands at more than 90 million, and has risen both in absolute terms and as a share of the total.

"Nigeria’s young and fast-growing population is projected by the United Nations to double in size by 2050, making it the world’s third-biggest. Even assuming that the proportion of Nigerians living in extreme poverty stops rising as quickly as it has in recent years, it’s on course to remain extraordinarily high for the foreseeable future.

"Nigeria’s success or failure in confronting extreme poverty will be pivotal for the rest of Africa, too — partly because of its huge population but also because of its outsize influence over its neighbors. The government led by President Muhammadu Buhari, recently re-elected to a second and final four-year term, bears a grave responsibility. One wonders whether a politician known as “Baba Go Slow” is up to the task.

"His record over the last four years is discouraging. Economic growth has barely recovered following the 2014 crash in the price of oil, which remains Nigeria’s biggest export and source of government revenue. Per capita gross domestic product is less than it was when he took office. Joblessness has more than tripled. Efforts to spur agriculture and other non-oil parts of the economy have failed. Foreign direct investment has fallen by more than half since 2010."

CJN Onnoghen's Saga Splits Supreme Court

Loyalists of the retiring Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen who are within the judiciary, particularly at the Supreme Court, are reportedly spoiling for war, over the perceived conspiracy of the new leadership of the court, the Court of Appeal and the National Judicial Council (NJC) with the Federal Government, in frustrating the jurist out of the system.

Following his controversial suspension by President Muhammadu Buhari on January 15, Onnoghen finally tendered his notice of retirement on Thursday night, hours after NJC ruled him morally-indicted and advised the president to compulsorily retire him.

His lead counsel in the legal battles arising from his travails, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, a senior advocate, disclosed on Saturday night that Onnoghen decided to voluntarily retire, due to his conviction that only NJC could sanction him.

He vehemently denied the resignation story that was everywhere in the public.

If Onnoghen had not resigned his appointment as the CJN, he would have stayed on as a justice of the apex court, thereby creating an awkward situation for his junior, Mohammed Tanko, who has taken charge in acting capacity since Onnoghen was suspended.

Tanko was also recommended by NJC under the leadership of Justice Umaru Abdullahi, a retired president of the Court of Appeal, to Buhari as fit and proper to take full charge as substantive CJN.

Sunday Tribune gathered that apart from the ethnic colouration that has tainted the Onnoghen saga, another dimension giving his own a major concern is the religious dimension.

In more than 30 years in the life of the apex court, Onnoghen is the second CJN of Christian faith, with the first being the late CJN, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, from Benue State.

Incidentally, both faced major crises in office, with Katsina-Alu ending up becoming the first CJN in history not to be honoured with the usual retirement valedictory sitting.

He turned down the invitation of the then-succeeding leadership headed by equally-late CJN, Justice Dahiru Musdapher, to be honoured by the judiciary and the apex court, following his unhidden disappointment with the way his crisis-of-confidence with then-former PCA, Ayo Salami, was handled by his colleagues at the apex court and the NJC.

At the peak of the crisis, NJC had suspended Salami, with Musdapher playing a major role over the Sokoto governorship appeal judgement, only for the same Musdapher alongside Justice Maryam Aloma-Mukhtar and others, to reverse the suspension and advised then-President Goodluck Jonathan to reinstate the suspended jurist.

Though Salami was never brought back to office, a religious colouration came into the saga, when justices of the Supreme Court of a particular faith, reportedly began a solidarity attachment to Salami, despite being in the know and contributed to the decision by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) and NJC, to recommend Salami’s promotion to the apex court, which he rejected.

Cases filed by Salami to challenge his suspension, also allegedly received sympathy from unexpected quarters within the top echelon of the system as well as the NJC probe and hearing in the petitions against both Katsina-Alu and Salami.

Infuriated by what seemed a majority/minority dichotomy and religious bias in the handling of the crisis, Katsina-Alu walked away from the judiciary when he clocked the age of 70 years on 28th August 2011, never to have anything to do with the system, till he died on 18th July 2018 at 76 years of age.

Before his press statement alleging bias against him by the Court of Appeal, which adjourned his five appeals for judgment without delivering any before he dropped his retirement notice, Onnoghen had told a close associate how deeply disappointed he was with his colleagues at the Supreme Court who heard his appeal and adjourned indefinitely for judgement.

With his ordeal, he is likely to walk away like Katsina-Alu, to become the second Christian CJN in history not to have the honourary valedictory sitting.

The sequence of events in the reign of the duo as heads of the judiciary has now become a major concern, with huge potential to shape how the apex court would emerge from the Onnoghen conundrum.

Beyond the justices’ level, senior administrative staff are also said to be divided over how Onnoghen’s reign came to an abrupt end.

One major issue attracting discussion and concern everywhere is the alleged roles played by the incumbent administrative head of the court, who Onnoghen incidentally appointed, but largely accused of working against him, even before he was suspended.

She was accused of collaborating with those seeking Onnoghen’s downfall, by allegedly providing vital information that got the jurist entangled.

“Even before oga was suspended, she was already having meetings with Justices of the court, working on oga’s ouster” a deep source in the system revealed.

Onnoghen’s sin was said to be the firing of her aides who were allegedly ravaging the system.

The said administrative officer was allegedly recommended to the exiting CJN by one of his very close aides, who had some academic background with the said officer, during their university days in the North, though the said aide is of South-South extraction like Onnoghen.

Pressure on NJC
Meanwhile, the move in Kogi State by Governor Yahaya Bello to sack the state Chief Judge, Justice Nasir Ajana, over alleged misdemeanor, is putting a lot of pressure on NJC, Tribune can disclose.

Ajana’s unofficial sin is said to be his refusal to get Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, locked up during the just-concluded presidential and parliamentary elections, over an alleged criminal case preferred against him.

Dino of the PDP went ahead to defeat the All Progressives Congress to win re-election to the senate.

The state House of Assembly has now recommended Ajana’s removal to Bello who is expected to seek NJC’s approval to fire Ajana.

If he didn’t before giving vent to the parliamentary resolution, the move would offend the decision of the Supreme Court in the case of the sacked former Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Raliat Elelu-Habeeb, who was reinstated by the apex court after she was fired by the then Governor.

APC Begs Goje Not To Work With Saraki For Senate President

The ruling APC is very worried that some of its senators are romancing Senate President Bukola Saraki to get his support ahead of the 9th senate. It is believed that any APC senator with just 10 supporters can work with the PDP senators through Saraki and emerge the new senate president.

Consequently, the APC has been sending people to beg Senator Danjuma Goje.

Some former governors are mounting pressure on their former colleague, Senator Goje, to accept President Muhammadu Buhari’s choice of Ahmad Lawan for Senate president.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) former governors appreciated the “cautious approach adopted by Goje to his aspiration without ruffling feathers but they felt he should defer to the President”.

The ex-governors have sent a delegation to Goje to reconsider his position.

Although two of them were with Goje on Saturday for what was termed “a social gathering”, it was unclear whether they were the ones who spoke on behalf of their colleagues.

A former governor, who pleaded not to be named, said: “It is true we are trying to avoid cracks in APC over the Ninth Senate President and some of us have met on the President’s choice and how to prevail on Goje to sacrifice his aspiration.

“I can tell you that some of us have opened talks with him. We are talking to him; we are mounting pressure. We also decided to send a delegation to him.

“As a matter of right, Goje is qualified to lead the Senate but we do not really want him to disagree with the President. And he is not a leader who believes in confrontation.”

Group S*x Deaths: Female Student Is Not From FUTO

The management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, has finally confirmed that three out of the four students, who died at the Sunshine Castle Hostel, Ihiagwa, after allegedly taking tramadol and Indian hemp, were its students.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of FUTO, Uche Nwelue, said after investigation, the university was able to identify three of the victims as students of the university.

She said checks in the school’s student data system confirmed that the three males, who allegedly took part in the s*x orgy at the hostel near the institution, were students of FUTO.

The university’s spokesperson said, “I can now confirm to you that all the three boys, who took part in the alleged s*x incident after an alleged drug overdose, were students of the university.

The only female among them is not our student; she is from the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede. That is the true situation of things as it concerns the studentship of the victims.”

Asked what the university would do now that it had confirmed that three out of the four students were from the institution, Nwelue stated, “The university is actually handicapped as it relates to this matter.

“The incident happened outside of the campus of the university. We do not have control over their lifestyle outside the campus. Moreover, the school has rules and regulations guarding every student here.

“If any of them breaks it, we will punish him/her once he/she comes back to school. But beyond this, parents should watch their children and encourage them to live in hostels on the campus. It will make them to be more serious and dedicated to their studies.”

It had been reported that four students, Ugochukwu Kingsley, Richard, Aka Uche and Onyinyechi Okafor were rescued from the hostel after an alleged s*x romp. While two out of the four students were found dead in the room, the other two were rushed to hospital. One other person died at the hospital.

Lagos Fire Service Boss, Six Others Kidnapped

Kidnappers on Saturday night abducted the Lagos State Fire Service Acting Director Rasaki Musibau and six others at Ejirin, along the Epe-Itoikin road, Ikorodu area of Lagos.

Among those kidnapped is the personal assistant to the vice chairman of Ikosi-Ejirin LCDA. The incident, it was gathered, occurred while the fire chief and others were returning to Lagos from Epe.
The daring kidnappers had blocked the Itoikin bridge, ambushing the occupants of a Sienna, Corolla and a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).
A resident, who simply gave his name as Segun, who called to notify The Nation about the incident around 3pm, said the fire service chief and other people were ordered to alight from their vehicles and were whisked away. He said the incident occurred in the evening.

“They (the kidnappers) didn’t take anything from the vehicles. The Fire Service acting director’s vehicle was there with his phone. We saw three vehicles at the spot. We were told that the kidnappers were just stopping vehicles on the road at Ejirin and after occupants of the three vehicles were taken, they hurriedly left the scene,” he said.

He doubted if the kidnappers knew Musibau before abducting him.

“They could have ransacked his vehicle and taken his phones away if they knew he is the Fire Service acting director,” he said.

Another resident said the abducted personal assistant to the vice chairman of Ikosi-Ejirin Local Council Development Area drove his boss’ vehicle.

“The kidnappers might have thought it was the council’s vice chairman, unknown to them that the person driving the vehicle is the chairman’s aide. I think the man took his boss’ vehicle to a party. He was returning to Ejirin before he was abducted,” he said.

According to him, the kidnappers left two children of some of the women abducted on the scene.

Some residents alleged that occupants of an interstate bus were also kidnapped after the vehicle dropped off some passengers along the road and bystanders, pretending to be waiting for a bus to Lagos, entered.

A resident, who spoke to The Nation, said the interstate bus had stopped to drop off a passenger at Ejirin, adding that some other persons standing on the road joined the vehicle en route to Lagos.

“It happened on Saturday evening. It was around 7pm. It was one of these instate buses that ply that route. The bus stopped to drop off passengers and some people entered. But unknown to the driver and passengers, those who entered the bus were kidnappers and they took them to an unknown destination.

“It was a separate incident from that of the fire service director. The man and some others were coming from Epe to Lagos when the kidnappers ambushed them and took them away. This area is gradually turning to something else.

“We are worried because we know how bad it was then when farmers and their employees were being kidnapped daily. These boys are gradually starting again.

“We are calling on the authorities to act fast before it is too late,” said the source.

But the police denied that any commercial bus was involved, saying the total number of those affected were seven occupants of a Toyota Sienna, Corolla and an Opel SUV.

The kidnap has sent shivers down the spines of residents of the axis who have for some time experienced respite from incessant kidnappings and armed banditry.
Prior to this incident, it was gathered that the Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman, Samson Ajijedidun, was kidnapped by the gang on March 1 and only released after a ransom was paid.

Police spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), said “Investigation has begun into this incident. The CP has also deployed Special Forces and tasked the Command’s Anti kidnapping Unit to ensure that they rescue the seven persons abducted by some hoodlums suspected to be kidnappers at about 8pm along Iwoye bridge, Itokin-Epe road, Ikorodu.

“The CP in the company of Tactical Units Commanders visited the crime scene in the early hours of today (yesterday) and assured the family of the victims that the command is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the victims are rescued unhurt."

Mother Dies As Jeep Plunges Into River While Taking Her Child To School

A woman conveying her daughter to school in Ogun State has drowned on Sunday when the private vehicle she was driving skidded off the dual carriage bridge between Ososa and Odogbolu stretch of the Sagamu–Ore expressway and plunged into the river beneath.

Her daughter, a student of Tai Solarin University was however rescued from the water.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, told The Nation that the vehicle was coming from Lekki in Lagos and going to Ijebu-Ode when the accident happened.

Akinbiyi added that mother and daughter were the only occupants of the vehicle and that the woman was conveying her daughter, who is a student of TASUED, to school at the time but lost control of the wheel and plunged into the river.

“The woman was taken her daughter back to school. As a result of over speeding, the woman lost control of the vehicle and plunged the vehicle into the river.

He said: “The driver, who is the woman and mother of the lady, lost her life, while the daughter is receiving treatment at the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital.”

Amaechi, Buhari AGF Plotting To Cause Crisis In Rivers State - PDP Raises Alarm

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that some leaders of the All Progressives Congress and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), were working to cause a constitutional crisis in Rivers State.

National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the allegation at a press conference in Abuja.

He said the leader of the APC in the state, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, who is also the Minister of Transportation, had embarked on fresh moves to subvert the will of the people.

He disclosed that the PDP had been informed of how the APC stalwarts and their agents had allegedly been mounting pressure on the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Mohammed, to reverse the February 12, 2019 judgment of the Supreme Court.

The apex court had in the judgement upheld the verdict of the trial court that excluded the APC from participating in the National Assembly, governorship and state House of Assembly elections in the state, having nullified the party’s primary elections.

Ologbondiyan said, “Nigerians can recall that in nullifying the APC primaries and barring it from fielding any candidates in Rivers State for the 2019 general elections, the High Court held, and rightly too, that APCs’ primaries in the state were invalid.

“Acting upon the final judgment of the Supreme Court, the Independent National Electoral Commission, on February 23, 2019 held the presidential/National Assembly elections and on March 9, 2019 conducted the governorship and state House of Assembly elections in Rivers State, in which the APC, having been lawfully excluded, did not participate.

“Nigerians can also recall how the APC, having been frustrated by its lawful exclusion, used compromised security agents to violently disrupt the smooth conduct of elections in Rivers State.”

He stated that in the course of the elections, the APC adopted the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress, bankrolled his election and allegedly made compromised security agents and thugs available to him, with the view to using them to rig elections.

He added, “However, not done with the desperation to cause confusion and crisis in Rivers State, the leader of the APC in the state, Rotimi Amaechi, has engaged in fresh conspiracies to subvert the will of the people as expressed at the polls.

“The PDP has information of how Amaechi has been going round in Rivers State, giving assurances that he has the ears of the Supreme Court under the leadership of acting CJN, Justice Tanko Mohammed, and that the apex court will reverse its final judgment on the APC primaries and make way for fresh elections in which the APC will be allowed to participate.

“Amaechi goes about boasting that the apex court in the land, the Supreme Court, will reverse itself and ask for fresh elections in Rivers State.”

The PDP warned that if the illegality was allowed to occur, it would amount to travesty of justice.

The PPRO stated that Alfred usually gave the victim some drugs after s*x to prevent her from getting pregnant, adding that in his statement to the police, the suspect revealed that he turned the victim into his s*x partner after he divorced from his wife in May 2018.

He said, “The matter was reported to our Gender Unit by the mother of the victim. The complainant stated that they live on the same street with the suspect and that the suspect usually called the victim into his shop while on her way back from school along Iyana Ejigbo Road, Lagos, were he sells Nigerian home videos, and have unlawful s*xual inter-course with her in the shop.

“The victim opened up to her grandmother and narrated the whole story. She further stated that the suspect threatened that she would die if she ever disclosed it to her parents and that he usually gave her some drugs to take and equally mixed salt and water for her to take after s*x to prevent her from getting pregnant. Investigation is ongoing and the suspect will be charged to court for molestation.”

Baby Born Prematurely To Drug-Addicted Parents & Left In Hospital For Months With No Visitors Is Adopted By Nurse

A young girl who was born prematurely and had no visitors in hospital has been adopted by a nurse who cared for her.

Liz Smith, 45, had always wanted to be a mother but suffered from infertility and was told she was not a good candidate for IVF.

The same day she was given the devastating news, she happened to meet baby Gisele, who weighed1lb 14oz and had health problems when she was born at 29 weeks to a drug-addicted mother and father.

Gisele had no visitors for months as nurses looked after her in a neonatal intensive care unit, and her future appeared to be uncertain until Ms Smith was introduced.

Staff at Franciscan Children's hospital in the US city of Boston, Massachusetts, were paying special attention to Gisele, who was on a ventilator in NICU and faced complications such as an oral aversion after being weaned off the drugs taken by her mother.

One day at work, a nurse asked Ms Smith if she had met the infant.

Ms Smith told CNN: "I said, 'No, why?' She said, 'She needs a medical foster home and you two are the perfect pair'."

She had never thought of foster care or adoption.

Ms Smith instantly bonded with Gisele and began to visit her regularly.

The nurse told the hospital's blog: “I went to see her every day. It was kind of my reward after a long workday.”

The state of Massachusetts gained custody of the girl when she was three-months-old in October 2016, and a few months later Ms Smith volunteered to foster her.

Gisele, who was diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome as a result of being exposed to drugs during the pregnancy, went to live with Ms Smith in April 2017 when she no longer required specialist care in hospital.

Gisele's birth parents had supervised visits, but the visits decreased over time and the goal changed from reuniting the family to adoption, the blog said.

Ms Smith told CNN: "It was an emotional roller coaster. When I initially started fostering her, the goal was reunification with her birth parents."

However, Gisele's birth mum and dad lost their parental rights in June last year when the state ruled they could not adequately care for the girl.

Teen 'Finds Stanley Knife Inside Bag Of Cadbury Chocolate Eggs' [Photos]

A teenage boy opened a 99p bag of Cadbury chocolate eggs from Aldi and found a Stanley knife inside, his father claims.

Michael Thomas, 44, said his 14-year-old son Ethan asked "What's this?" after discovering the blade inside the sealed bag.

The dad told Mirror Online he was shocked when he realised the object was a Stanley knife, and he was thankful no one in his home was cut by the blade.

Mr Thomas said he's been chasing Cadbury's owner, Mondelez International, for answers, and the firm has blamed a "co-packer" but hasn't explained how the knife ended up in a bag of Dairy Milk chocolate eggs.

His wife Amanda had purchased the treat for her son during a shopping trip to their local Aldi on January 12, and Ethan opened the bag at home.

Mr Thomas, an account manager in healthcare, said: "He said, 'Mum, what's this?' and he pulled it out of the bag.

"I thought, 'Oh my God, it's a Stanley knife'.

"I thought it was a prank at first."

He said he has been exchanging emails with Mondelez for months, and the firm has blamed a "co-packer" and got its legal team involved.

He added: "They blamed co-packers for it and admitted liability in their email, but they gave me no reason for how it happened.

"Co-packers or not, this was under the Cadbury brand.

"I don't know if it's anything malicious.

"It was quite an old knife with a number etched on the side that looks like an employee number.

"I don't know if it was an accident.

"They use high-tech equipment. How would a knife get into a bag of chocolate without getting flagged up?"

Initially, Mr Thomas' wife Amanda, 43, was worried the knife had been placed in the bag for sinister reasons.

Her thoughts immediately went to last year's Novichok nerve agent attack on a Russian former spy in the cathedral city.

He said: "We live in Salisbury where a woman died from picking up a discarded perfume bottle.

"My wife spent the night thinking what if it's contaminated?"

Mr Thomas said he took the bag back to Aldi and a staff member told him that his claims would be looked into.

The American multinational offered to send a hamper to the family as a gesture of goodwill, said Mr Thomas.

The dad said he declined, and the company then offered to make a donation to the charity of his choice as well after consulting the co-packer.

He said he accepted the offer and asked Mondelez to donate £10,000 - matching the sum offered in Cadbury's recent white egg competition - to help pay for new medical equipment at Salisbury's hospital.

Homeless Man Banned From NHS, After Faking He Has EBOLA & AIDS Which Left Hospital In Confusion

NHS hospital workers have been warned about a homeless man who has faked serious illness - including Ebola and AIDS - to receive treatment, food and a bed.

Christopher Dearlove has cost the NHS thousands of pounds after using more than 70 aliases in years.

The 63-year-old has been described as the "UK's most prolific hospital hopper" and was given a criminal ASBO banning him from every NHS hospital building in England and Wales.

But authorities are still concerned he is trying to trick the NHS with more lies and have issued a new "risk alert".

A court had previously heard Dearlove coughed on nurses after claiming he had just returned from West Africa where his wife had died from the deadly Ebola virus.

Medics donned protective clothing and masks and A&E came to a standstill in 2017.

The court was also told the man tricked staff into thinking he was a haemophiliac with AIDS and coughed up fake blood to get a room to himself.

Dearlove was eventually jailed for 14 months but has since completed his term.

He also goes by the names Gary Wainwright, Gary Lampard, Gary Ryan and Gary Fowler.

It's understood Dearlove is a "prolific offender" at hospitals along the M4 corridor in south Wales and south-west England.

Lagos Keeps Tinubu, Others' Huge Benefits Secret

The Lagos State Government has refused to disclose how much it has so far spent on houses, vehicles and huge allowances of its former governors and ex-deputy governors.

The Punch had in December 2018 written a letter to the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, requesting to know how much of taxpayers’ money had been spent on former governors and former deputy governors based on the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension) Law No 11 official Gazette of Lagos State, 2007.
Specifically, The Punch asked for the amount that had been spent on purchasing houses and vehicles for all former governors and deputy governors and other allowances paid to them from 2007 to December 2018.
Repeated calls to the Commissioner for Information, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, proved futile as he asked the correspondent to give him more time.

Subsequent phone calls and text messages were not acknowledged by the commissioner.

The Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension) Law No 11 official Gazette of Lagos State, 2007 states that former governors of the state are entitled to a house each in any location of their choice in Lagos and Abuja.

Section 2 states, “One residential house each for the governor and the deputy governor at any location of their choice in Lagos State and one residential house in the Federal Capital Territory for the governor on two consecutive terms.”

The state has built houses for former governors of the state in Lagos and Abuja in line with the law. A house was bought for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Ikoyi and the Asokoro area of Abuja.

Houses have also been built for former Governor Babatunde Fashola, who is now the Minister of Power, Works and Housing.

Others who are benefitting from the law are former deputy governors Femi Pedro, Abiodun Ogunleye, Sarah Sosan, and Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and his deputy, Oluranti Adebule, are expected to be added to the list of beneficiaries once their tenure expires next month.

A former governor is also entitled to six new cars every three years, 100 per cent of the basic salary of the serving governor (N7.7m per annum), as well as free health care for himself and members of his family.

The law also says former governors will be entitled to furniture allowance, which is 300 per cent of their annual basic salary (N23.3m); house maintenance allowance, which is 10 per cent of basic salary (N778,296); utility allowance, which is 20 per cent of the salary (N1.5m) and car maintenance allowance, which is 30 per cent of the annual basic salary (N2.3m).

Other benefits include entertainment allowance, which is 10 per cent of the basic salary (N778,296) and a personal assistant, who will earn 25 per cent of the governor’s annual basic salary (N1.9m).

The law adds that a former governor is entitled to domestic workers comprising a cook, a steward, a gardener and others whose appointments are pensionable.

A former governor will also be entitled to eight policemen and two officials of the Department of State Services for life, according to the Lagos law.

However, the law does not state how much can be spent on building houses, procuring vehicles and health issues.

The information was what necessitated the FOI request.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria had, in its 2018 Accountability Index, scored Lagos just 29 percent on government transparency.

The state government has repeatedly ignored FOI requests, insisting that the Act only applies to Federal Government agencies despite a judgment by a Court of Appeal last year that the FOI Act is applicable to all states in Nigeria.
